Newsletter Headteacher’s message As I may have explained before, a lockdown school is a surprisingly busy school. We have three key projects currently on the go. Our first is the remote learning offer which we are putting out. On Monday I was in a live lesson and heard parents helpfully giving advice on how to mute. It reminded me that you are our partners in this adventure and so soon we will be offering you the chance to give us some feedback, if you have it, via a MS Forms survey. If you have feedback before then, please try subject teachers or year teams as they are likely to be able to solve any issues far more quickly than I will. We know what our strengths are and we have a good idea of our areas for improvement, but it will be interesting to get your views.

Our second is HISS (Highfields In School Support) which we are offering to children of keyworkers and vulnerable children. I am hugely grateful to all the staff who are supervising these children as they undertake the same work offered to students working at home.

Our third is testing for staff to try and identify and reduce the number of asymptomatic cases of Covid on site. I don’t know how they have done it but the team of teachers and support staff responsible for this seem to have gained very specialist skills in a very short amount of time.

On top of these projects, we are aiming to share information and strengthen our ‘We Are Highfields’ community ethos through assemblies which now include contributions from a range of staff. You may notice that our love of curriculum learning is balanced against a real concern about children’s emotional and physical wellbeing. I have been lucky enough to secure a place in school for my kids this time, but I know from the last lockdown that it can bring a feeling of isolation and dislocation even in the most organised of family households (which mine definitely isn’t).

All this is leading up to an apology. I was so tired late last night as I finalised assembly and uploaded to YouTube that I omitted a tutorial video on MS Teams that Mr O’Reilly had worked very hard to make the assembly deadline for. So … apologies to Mr O’Reilly and to anyone else who was a bit mystified by that section of this morning’s assembly. I understand we have sent the link for the video separately - it also available on the school website.

On the subject of assemblies, I would like to thank any staff member who has taken the time to contribute. Which reminds me…I have assemblies to thank for the fact that this weekend I need to research giving blood and also make a Thai curry with sticky coconut rice.

Newsletter Parents/Carers Update Year 11 & 13 - Consultation on how exam grades will be awarded in 2021 Last Friday, 15 January, the Department for Education and the exams regulator Ofqual published details of their consultation on how exam grades will be awarded in the summer. Students, parents / carers and school staff are invited to respond to the consultation, which closes at 23.45 on Friday 29 January.

As expected, a key element of the proposed approach is the introduction of short test papers set by the exam boards for students to sit in school in May and June. It is proposed that teachers will assess these using exam board produced mark schemes and that outcomes on these tests be used to inform teacher assessed grades. The consultation asks whether this sounds like a good idea, along with further questions about the timing, scope and weighting to be given to these papers, and whether they should be compulsory. There are also questions about the nature and extent of other evidence that could be used to give an accurate grade for students.

Parent consultation evenings You may be aware that there was a year 11 parent consultation evening planned for Tuesday 26 January. Due to the current lockdown and school closure this is unable to go ahead, however we are currently investigating software for virtual parents’ evenings to take place for all year groups, and we hope to be able to release more details on this soon.

Reminder: Weduc A reminder to parents/carers to download the Weduc App or register via the Weduc website to receive communications from school. Weduc allows notifications to be sent directly to your mobile with any messages from school and will replace our current system.

Enrolment emails have been sent out over the last term and more recently as reminders for those who have not yet signed up. Please look out for the registration email if you have not already downloaded the app or registered, as we are aiming to fully launch the Weduc system for all our communications by 1 April.

Newsletter Reminder: Y9 GCSE Options We have moved all our resources online for the year 9 GCSE options process and we are collecting responses electronically.

The deadline for making initial option choices is 24 January. As the majority of students are not currently in school we are collecting students options via Microsoft Forms. This form has been set out to students via email.

The options process is fully explained in the first section of the Student Options Booklet which all students should have taken home in December.

Detailed information on individual option subjects in the can be found in the Curriculum Booklet.

There is a virtual options evening presentation also available for you to download so that you can see and hear about the process if you wish.

Option subjects are correct as at time of publication and are subject to change.

Newsletter Free School Meals Hampers We will be providing hampers with two week's worth of food on Tuesday 26 January for students eligible for free school meals. These will be available for collection in Bowler Hall on our Starkholmes site between 10am and 3pm. If you require collection outside of these hours, or are in need of delivery, please contact kalcock@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk Our final hamper collection day for this term will be Tuesday 9 February and this will be a one week hamper.

Reminder: Covid Winter Grant Scheme shopping vouchers The second set of Covid winter shopping vouchers are due to be sent in mid-February. The money to pay for these vouchers has come from the government through its Covid-19 winter grant scheme which is over and above the other support schemes already provided by Derbyshire County Council.

If you received vouchers in December and your circumstances haven’t changed then you should be eligible for vouchers in February. The amount each voucher is worth will depend on the number of children in the region who qualify at that time. These will be sent automatically using text or email by Derbyshire County Council using the contact details held by school.

Please ensure the contact details we hold for you are up to date and correct. You must do this before 29 January 2021.

For full details of the scheme or to see what help and support is available, please visit www.derbyshire.gov.uk/winter If your financial circumstances have changed since December you may be eligible to apply for free school meals at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or free childcare for 2-year-olds at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/freechildcaretwo. If you are successful in your application, you will be added to the February voucher distribution.

2021-22 academic year The term dates for next year are given below.

Term 1: 2 September 2021 to 22 October 2021 Term 2: 1 November 2021 to 23 December 2021 Term 3: 10 January 2022 to 18 February 2022 Term 4: 28 February 2022 to 8 April 2022 Term 5: 25 April 2022 to 27 May 2022 (2 May 2022 is a bank holiday) Term 6: 6 June 2022 to 22 July 2022 We are prioritising discussions on the dates for our INSET days, but as you can appreciate there are other outcomes to consider, and so this is taking us a little longer than usual. We appreciate parents/carers would like to plan for next year and we will provide the dates for our 2021-22 INSET days over the coming weeks.

Newsletter Always be doing tasks We have seen some excellent online learning from students so far during lockdown. Please see the Highfields Virtual Learning Studio later in the newsletter for examples of the high quality work students are submitting.

As you are aware all lessons are scheduled to run for 100 minutes and subject staff set work to enable students to complete tasks within this time. Save the Children Christmas Jumper fundraiser Christmas may seem like a distant memory now, but we wanted to say thank you to students for their donations from our Christmas Jumper Day at the end of term.

We raised a total of £946.79 for Save the Children. Thank you to everyone who contributed at a time when money is much needed at home and by charities.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator)

Better Health - Every Mind Matters Public Health England are launching the Better Health - Every Mind Matters campaign to support the nation’s mental wellbeing with the encouragement that “When things aren’t so good out there, make inside feel better”. Aimed at adults, but weighted towards those most at risk of mental health problems, this “Make Inside Feel Better” 2021 phase of the campaign will run across across PR, radio, social and digital. The key message will be to encourage people to create a free NHS-approved ‘Mind Plan’ (https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/your-mind-plan-quiz/).

The campaign is being supported by the NHS, local authorities and a range of mental health charities, health organisations as well as other charities and commercial sector partners.

The Every Mind Matters platform (https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/) has been continuously updated to support people during the COVID-19 outbreak, and has a COVID-19 hub (https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/coronavirus/) that includes tips and support on how to deal with change, cope with money worries and job uncertainty and how to look after your mental wellbeing while staying at home. Newsletter Rounders Bingo Challenge After the announcement of the national lockdown, Rounders England created a fun and free 2021 Ready Rounders Bingo challenge to take part in.

The challenge is designed to keep students active, encourage creativity and problem solving, and keep their minds busy as we face the Coronavirus pandemic together.

The bingo challenge can be completed both at home. Alternative equipment, such as makeshift rounders bats and balls, can be used where needed.

Sports Leaders update Mrs Allen is keeping up to date with events and has been involved in a Zoom meeting with Rural Derbyshire School Sports Partnership this week where discussions are taking place on restructuring the SSP management group. Mrs Allen has also been keeping busy attending a Youth Sport Trust member event with Chief Executive Officer Ali Oliver and will report back any updates or news for sports leaders.

Newsletter Support and resources available Families Accessing Free School Meals During this third national lockdown the government are not offering the national free school meal voucher scheme and schools are offering out hampers to families who usually have free school meals.

We are preparing hampers with enough food in for a fortnight. If you would like a hamper, or have a query regarding hampers, please email Kerry Alcock (kalcock@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk) if you have not already done so.

Hampers will be available for collection in the Bowler Hall at Starkholmes on Tuesdays. Please ensure you wear a suitable face mask and maintain social distancing when on the school site to collect hampers.

Free School Meal Criteria Families could qualify for free school meals if meeting the following criteria:  Universal Credit, provided there is an annual net earned income not exceeding £7,400 (£616.67 per month)  Income Support  Income-based Jobseekers Allowance  Income-related Employment and Support Allowance  support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999  the guarantee element of State Pension Credit  Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) as assessed by HMRC  Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit) Universal Credit has begun to be rolled out in Derbyshire and will affect all areas of Derbyshire by the end of 2022 - full details are available on Derbyshire County Council’s website https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/social-health/adult-care-and-wellbeing/benefits-debt-and-legalmatters/welfare-benefits/universal-credit/universal-credit.aspx Young people age 16 to 18 who receive the benefits or tax credits in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals. Even if you meet any or all of the criteria, families will not be eligible if they are claiming Working Tax Credit. You can sign up for free school meals at any time of year. You or your partner can claim for your children, as long as you live at the same address. You do not have to fill in a separate form for each child, even if they go to different schools. Newsletter Financial help from the ‘We Are Highfields Fund’ We have reopened the We Are Highfields fund that we set up during the last lockdown to support Highfields families affected by the Covid-19 outbreak to pay bills and get connectivity. Please pass these details on to anyone who may need help but does not access school emails or the newsletter.

Application forms for the We Are Highfields Fund can be requested from the finance office either by email (finance@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk); can be completed over the phone where you will be asked few simple questions to check eligibility (01629 832325); through your child’s year manager or the school website: https://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/WeAreHighfieldsApplication.docx This is a hardship grant and is considered on a case by case basis. This grant scheme will be paid out until funds are exhausted. Newsletter Learning from home resources FAQs Q: How does my child get started in accessing work?

A: Everybody should log on to Show My Homework by 8.45 am. All students should know how to do this as this our platform for all homework. If anybody is unsure how to do this watch this video, which is on the school website. It also explains how to access school email and our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) https://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/how-to-learn-from-home/ Q: How will learning be organised during this lockdown?

A: We had a lot of success with ‘remote education’ during lockdown last year and will apply all we learned to our arrangements for the next period of learning from home. Many aspects of our approach will be familiar to those in Y8-13 but we are making a few changes to enable all students to learn as effectively as possible. In essence we are aiming for ‘business as normal as it can be’.

The structure of our remote learning will mirror your child’s normal school timetable. This clear, familiar structure will help students to know what is expected of them and when.

Q: How is the timetable my child will be following organised?

A: All students are expected to return to remote learning.

To help structure each day students should follow their usual timetable. This comprises of 3 x 100 minute lessons with breaks in between each: Lesson 1 8.45am - 10.25am Lesson 2 10.50am – 12.30pm Lesson 3 1.40pm - 3.20pm We run a ‘2 week timetable’, meaning that students have different patterns of lessons according to which week we are in. Week beginning 25 January is ‘Week A’. We then go back to Week B again and so on. Work will be set according to this timetable.

Q: How much work should my child be doing each day?

A: It is crucial that students in all year groups keep on learning. A lot is expected of them as responsible learners, and their approach to learning will be key to their success in the coming weeks. They should be busy and working hard during the school day. Work set should be sufficient to keep most students learning for 100 minutes. If it is completed much more quickly it is likely that it has been rushed or is incomplete. If it is taking much longer than 100 minutes students should reach a logical stopping point and inform their teacher.

Q: Where will my child find their work for each lesson?

A: Work will be set on Show My Homework and will be available for the start time of each lesson.

It should be completed within lesson time. Work for lessons will take different forms and may include a link to join a ‘live session’.

Newsletter Q: My child doesn’t have access to a suitable device for learning, like a laptop.

Can you help?

A: Yes, we will help as far as we can. We surveyed students in the autumn term to get a good picture of need, and are prioritizing getting devices to students who do not have any access to a device at home. Please contact your child’s Year Manager if your child does not have access to a suitable device.

Q: What form will work and lessons take?

A: Our experience of remote teaching and learning, along with the research that has taken place in this area, shows that an approach based on a mix of activities works best. The most important ingredients are some crucial general principles rather than specific forms of activity. Our teachers know that remote teaching and learning works best when the following can be provided: Clear and full instructions, quality resources, learning activities with clear outcomes, support structures and ‘models’, checks on understanding, feedback where possible. Some lessons may include short or longer periods of ‘live’ teaching via video conferencing platforms like Zoom. These can be a useful part of a mixed approach that could include many other ways of working. We know that in the recent period of school closure for Y7 and 8 many students worked collaboratively with each other when not under the direct supervision of their teacher. This was an excellent strategy.

Q: What is happening to exams now?

What does all this mean to students in Y11 and

A: The Prime Minister said that most GCSE and A level exams will be cancelled this year, and that the Department for Education will be working with partners to decide on alternatives (please see latest information on the current consultation regarding summer grades earlier in the newsletter).

All the work that exam year groups have been doing, and will continue to do, will be very important. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT Y11 AND 13 STUDENTS CONTINUE TO WORK TO THE LIMITS OF THEIR POTENTIAL BECAUSE: 1. Students need to ensure that they give their teachers evidence of their skills/knowledge in that subject in order that the teacher can use this to inform their honest professional judgements.

2. Learning that is done over the coming weeks will have huge value – not just for final grades, but primarily because it is always good to learn things for their own sake. The skills/knowledge currently being acquired will be needed in future life whether this is on apprenticeships, college courses, university degrees or in the workplace. With unemployment rising it is extremely important that Highfields students prepare themselves for a competitive work environment.

Examinations are there to test and certificate our knowledge- they are NOT a primary reason for learning. Learning about the world around us, and our place in it is a key responsibility for any person who, one day, wants to make a positive contribution to their community, be this local or global. We have this aspiration for all our young people.

Newsletter Coronavirus guidance Advice if students (and staff) display symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) If your child develops symptoms of Covid-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 10 days (this replaces the previous 14 day period as announced on 14.12.20). This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken within the home.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.

Symptoms The most common symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) are recent onset of:  a new continuous cough(this is defined as coughing a lot for more than an hour, or have three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours),  a high temperature (above 37.8C),  a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) For most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop Covid-19 spreading There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with Covid-19 – Do:  wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds  use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

wash your hands as soon as you get home cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.

If students have these symptoms (without the temperature, continuous cough or loss of smell symptom), then they don’t need to have a test.

The decision as to whether or not they come to school or stay at home should be taken as you would do in normal times (they are not required to stay off school).

Where a child has a sickness bug, as always, they must be kept off school for 48 hours.

School response to notification of positive Covid-19 cases We required the following key information from parents/carers when notifying school of a positive Covid-19 test:  the date symptoms started  the date the test was taken  the date the result was received  the names of ‘close contacts’ of the student during social times at school and any students they have spent time with as close contacts after school  the number of the bus if the student caught a bus to/from school.

A close contact is:  a person who has had face to face contact within one metre of the individual testing positive  contact within one metre for one minute or longer without face to face contact  someone who has been within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes  a person who has travelled in a small vehicle with the individual testing positive, or near them on a large vehicle or plane.

School then checks lesson seating plans to work out how many close contacts there are from lessons, identifying any students who have sat within 2m of the individual testing positive in any lessons during their contagious time prior to developing symptoms. Individual classrooms are then checked manually to see where the desks are and how much room there is.

Once this information is obtained school contacts Public Health England schools helpline who take the details. If there is only one case in a year group and if school are confident we have identified all close contacts we only need to ask those students to stay off school and to self-isolate for 14 days.

School informs the Local Education Authority and the school nursing team.

If there is more than one case in a year group, or there is uncertainty around close contacts, then school receives a call back from East Midlands Public Health. They go through all of the information, contact parents/carers where there are positive cases and review the school’s risk assessment. East Midlands Public Health then give school advice on what steps to take next.

It is really important that parents/carers keep children in their home if they test positive or are asked to self-isolate.



It is key that parents/carers know where their children are and who they are with so close contacts can easily be traced.



Unless there is a really urgent situation (such as urgent first aid) staff need to keep 2m away from students and other staff so they are not classed as close contacts.



It is key to understand that if you are a close contact and take a test, even if the result is negative, you have to self-isolate for the full 10 days.

Public Health provide school with a template latter to send home to all parents/carers and a different letter for parents/carers of close contacts. We take on board all advice that Public Health give us.

Newsletter Highfields School Governing Board 2020-21 Highfields School is fortunate in the kinds of people who have volunteered to become governors, each bringing a variety of skills and experience to support the school.

Highfields governing board has a strong focus on three core strategic functions:  ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction  holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students, and the performance management of staff, and  overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
