Message from the headteacher
When you apply for a headship they occasionally do an ‘in tray’ test where they present you with multiple scenarios such as ‘a supply teacher doesn’t show up and a sinister looking clown has been seen in the lower fields…what do you do?’ I was reminded of this when I arrived on Monday to be greeted with the words, ‘owl loose in the art corridor how do you want to respond?’ By way of reassurance my response was a textbook example of the owl in art space scenario emergency recovery plan (OIASSERP) and by lunch time the owl was safely released to resume his life and potentially, artistic pursuits. See pic for owl.
One of the reasons governors revisited the skirt issue this year was to ensure that girls wore uniform which allowed for physical activity (the very short/ tight skirts being worn were precluding this). I’m thrilled to report that staff on duty at break and lunch have noticed a significant increased in the number of female students getting active both in netball and football, and especially at Starkholmes site. We are pretty fanatical at Highfields about kids getting physical exercise to support both their physical and mental health. The picture to the side captures on of our many informal lunchtime activities open to students; boxercise. This particular club is currently popular with boys but other clubs feature up to 52 girls at a time (netball, for example).
In lessons this week I’ve seen a range of great stuff but the most interesting perhaps was a sixth form lesson on consent. This looked at the legal and moral questions underpinning decisions around (physical or sexual contact) consent. As per last year, a number of our sixth formers will be trained to deliver an adapted version of this workshop to students in lower year groups. It’s one of the many steps we take to improve the quality of students’ relationships and to reduce further the chances of incidents involving non-consensual contact or sexism.
Thanks for all the sympathy (not) following last week’s newsletter regarding my old Volvo which is having major surgery in the garage this week after blocking Starkholmes Road last Thursday when it broke down. A member of senior team sent me this image which apparently depicts my attempts to wedge my very significant frame into the tiny car I’ve had to rent. Thanks again.
And finally…you probably won’t remember the lockdown assemblies but they featured a cat, Romulus, who people occasionally ask after. He became very ill on Monday night so I took him to the emergency vet but he died on the way. Each evening for the last 20 years at around 10.30pm he has sat with me and, no matter what’s happened that day (birth of two kids, changes in career, divorce, Ofsted inspections, lockdowns etc) we have dosed off together watching the news see pic. I know he was just a cat but he was always there for me and I’ll really miss his company.

Parents/Carers Update
Enhanced security at Lumsdale (upper school site)
A reminder that from Monday 31 October the Chesterfield Road entrance to Highfields School will be locked from 8.45am until 3.20pm. The gate will open at 7.30am and lock for the night at around 5pm.
Anyone wishing to enter Highfields Lumsdale site between those times will need to do so via the front entrance.
This is part of a multi phase plan to improve security for Highfields students and staff to avoid members of the public, dog walkers etc entering the school site.
Reminder: PTFA Annual General Meeting 19 October 2022
A reminder that the PTFA AGM is taking place on 19 October at 6pm at Lumsdale (upper school site) in room L6.
All parents/carers, teachers and friends of Highfields School are invited to attend. Come along with ideas and enthusiasm and a willingness to support the school community!
We look forward to welcoming you.

Starkholmes Bake Off!Starkholmes
Round 1 of Bake Off took place this week on Tuesday and Starkholmes students did not disappoint!
The standard of entries was incredibly high and judging was a very difficult task.
Reward points will be given to all entrants and awards will be given out in assemblies next week.
Judges were trying to show some restraint when tasting cakes, but it was very difficult as the cakes were so delicious it was very tempting to go back for another taste!
Round 2 will take place after half term and will be a pastry round. This means you can make a sweet or savoury dish – more information to follow.
Issue 05: 14 October 2022 Bethebestyoucan School news
What’s the point of school? I mean, really, what is the actual point? Sometimes it’s easy forget in the midst of league tables, health and safety, funding issues, Ofsted and other distractions. When you come down to, of course, the point of a school is to improve the world.
Our aim at Highfields is to form students who go out and change the world. They might change the world on a local level, perhaps by becoming a carer, a social worker or by working in a local business. They might change the world on a national level by contributing to British industry, science or medicine. They may even change the world on an international level through their involvement in finding solutions for global problems around energy, conflict and economic imbalance.
Our responsibly, then, is produce young people who are not only armed with the skills and knowledge to make a difference, but also with the moral wisdom to use their academic capital for the advancement of others.
At Highfields the person who ensures that year 13s leave us ready to make this difference is our director of sixth form, Martin Flett. Martin continues a tradition at Highfields of sixth form leaders who themselves are intellectual models for students to be inspired by. He is a deep thinker and as such is able to constantly challenge students at a range of levels. In the classroom he leads a team delivering A levels and some BTECs to the highest possible level. Outside of the classroom he builds resilience and resourcefulness. He and his team go above and beyond to nurture Highfields sixth formers towards excellence. A couple of weekends ago when other school leaders were nursing their Saturday morning cup of tea, the sixth form team were throwing themselves with their students in the dark, cold waters of Rother Valley; an activity to promote a love of adventure, fortitude, fun.
The result of this investment in our sixth formers is that firstly, they achieve extremely well. Pre pandemic, our results showed value added which was consistently in the top 25% of schools nationally, and this summer they remained extremely strong with a value added score of +0.22. This ensured that students were able to head onto the next stage of their journey to university or apprenticeship. We are equally proud of our students who, for example, headed to Cambridge to study languages, or who scored 4 A*s and went off to study maths and physics, as we are of those who secured competitive apprenticeships, such as a student who secured a place at Fujitsu.
Most importantly for us, our students leave us with an understanding of themselves, their strengths and areas for improvement and a confidence in themselves to make the world a better place.

Five Derby Cycle officers came for the day and set up a challenging course for our students to ride during a very windy morning and certainly a windy and wet afternoon. Our students rose to the challenges as ever. There were some excellent races and students received certificates for their participation.

Gothia Youth World Cup 2022 news
Year 11 students, Sophie and Erin, played for Chesterfield ladies u18 in the Gothia Youth World Cup in the summer, held in the beautiful city of Gothenberg. It's one of the biggest youth tournament in the world and this year over 4000 teams took part across all age groups for girls and boys.
The team entered into a group with two Swedish teams and an American team playing a match each day for three days. They beat both Swedish teams 2 nil and 5 nil and drew 0 0 with the American team. To put in perspective the Colorado team they drew with are a team made up of players from the Colorado league, and over 1700 players trialled for a place and had a mini tour of Norway prior to Gothia, so the draw achieved was very credible.
Chesterfield ladies u18s finished second in group and on the fourth day had to play a match at 8.00am, which they won 2 nil and put them through to last 16, but had to play a further game at 3pm later that day. The team drew 0 0 and it went to penalties which they unfortunately lost.
The temperatures were very hot all week and on last day hit 30 degrees. The team didn't go out thinking they could win it but the coaches were all very proud of the girls. A few members of the team (Sophie was one) had to play all 270 mins of football in four days due to injuries.
It was an amazing life experience for the team especially for those who had never even flown before let alone been away on their own. All involved found the experience hard work but thoroughly rewarding.
The photograph above is of Erin. Another ex student of Highfields, Lucy, also attended. The whole experience was unforgettable both for the team and the coaches. To read the full blog of the trip click the link below:

Highfields School uniform
A strict uniform code is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code.
The uniform code is designed to be clear and can be accessed on the following link: https://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/our school/uniform/.
Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure on any item of school uniform.
Trutex Direct and Kick Off Sport both stock Highfields uniform. Kick Off Sport also stock the Highfields PE kit. Orders can be placed on line both with Trutex Direct (https://www.trutex.com/) and Kick Off Sport (https://www.kickoffsport.co.uk/) if you know the size and items required without the need to visit a store directly. To assist with purchasing the right sizes Kick Off Sport have produced a size guide (see links below).
Various information has been prepared on our school uniform and can be accessed on the links below or from the school website:
