Derby Cycle day
Advertisement
Last Friday, Derby Cycle came to visit Highfields for our secondary cycling day. Students from all years were given the opportunity to cycle on the Lumsdale field. Years 7, 8 and 12 took part in the morning session, with years 9-11 in the afternoon.

Five Derby Cycle officers came for the day and set up a challenging course for our students to ride during a very windy morning and certainly a windy and wet afternoon. Our students rose to the challenges as ever. There were some excellent races and students received certificates for their participation.

Gothia Youth World Cup 2022 news
Year 11 students, Sophie and Erin, played for Chesterfield ladies u18 in the Gothia Youth World Cup in the summer, held in the beautiful city of Gothenberg. It's one of the biggest youth tournament in the world and this year over 4000 teams took part across all age groups for girls and boys.
The team entered into a group with two Swedish teams and an American team playing a match each day for three days. They beat both Swedish teams 2 nil and 5 nil and drew 0-0 with the American team. To put in perspective the Colorado team they drew with are a team made up of players from the Colorado league, and over 1700 players trialled for a place and had a mini tour of Norway prior to Gothia, so the draw achieved was very credible.
Chesterfield ladies u18s finished second in group and on the fourth day had to play a match at 8.00am, which they won 2 nil and put them through to last 16, but had to play a further game at 3pm later that day. The team drew 0-0 and it went to penalties which they unfortunately lost.
The temperatures were very hot all week and on last day hit 30 degrees. The team didn't go out thinking they could win it but the coaches were all very proud of the girls. A few members of the team (Sophie was one) had to play all 270 mins of football in four days due to injuries.
It was an amazing life experience for the team especially for those who had never even flown before let alone been away on their own. All involved found the experience hard work but thoroughly rewarding.
The photograph above is of Erin. Another ex-student of Highfields, Lucy, also attended. The whole experience was unforgettable both for the team and the coaches. To read the full blog of the trip click the link below:
