Since making his Test debut in 2012, Etzebeth has grown as a leader and is the most experienced player in the current Springbok squad. He captained the Boks through 2017, but also stood in for Siya Kolisi when the current Bok captain was unavailable in 2019. ‘His best attribute is that he’s a physical animal,’ said former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. ‘There are certain players in rugby that others dread coming up against. Eben is one of those players. He gets stuck in. ‘A lot of opponents tried to provoke him in the early stages of his career. The All Blacks were very good at pushing players in that manner. Eben didn’t take the bait, though. ‘I’ve been proud to see him grow over physical presence, but he’s worked hard to add other elements to his game.’ Bakkies Botha was the Bok enforcer when South Africa claimed a series victory against the Lions in 2009. This time, the tourists will have their hands full with Etzebeth, who has seamlessly taken over Botha’s mantle.
