Apprenticeships Combine working with learning and get your career off the ground with an Apprenticeship. Apprentices earn and learn at the same time, gaining hands-on experience and new skills and knowledge, in the workplace and, in most cases, at College. Key benefits of being an apprentice include: • You earn a wage • You train alongside experienced staff • You achieve qualifications • You learn job-specific skills • You boost your future job prospects • You can progress through levels and even top up from an Apprenticeship to a degree in some sectors Apprenticeships follow a structured programme that leads to recognised qualifications. Generally, Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete (depending on the sector). Apprenticeships can be taken at three levels: Intermediate (Level 2), Advanced (Level 3) and Higher (Level 4/5). The type of Apprenticeship you choose will depend on your intended career and any experience and qualifications you may already have gained. Like all employees, apprentices receive a wage. Employers are obliged to cover an apprentice’s salary for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Can anyone become an apprentice? Anyone over the age of 16, who has been living in England for at least three years and is not in full-time education, can become an apprentice. To be an apprentice you must be employed in your chosen industry. If you don’t have a job you should log on to the National Apprenticeship Service website at www.apprenticeships.org.uk and search for vacancies using keywords, job role or your postcode.

Gazelle Inspiring Opportunity As a member of the Gazelle Colleges Group, we are committed to promoting an entrepreneurial mindset in our students that will benefit employers and provide opportunities for all. Gazelle colleges are moving away from classroom learning towards an approach that puts students in the driving seat, with opportunities to work as part of a business at the same time as gaining qualifications in their chosen subject area. Entrepreneurs and local businesses can actively support the College’s entrepreneurial ethos through mentoring, supporting our student-led businesses and enterprise society or by becoming a member of one of our Employer Advisory Boards.

Want to start your own business? A Gazelle college is an excellent place to start a business. Experts are on hand with advice on formulating a business plan and sourcing funding. You can also join the College’s enterprise society ‘Collective Futures’, which was last year named ‘College Society of the Year’ by the National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs (NACUE). Please contact Wendy Funnell for more information at wendy.funnell@highbury.ac.uk

Adult Enterprise Courses Over 40% of UK adults say they would like to start a business or become self-employed. Only 5% ever actually do so. The Level 2 First Steps to Enterprise and Level 3 Create, Grow and Sustain a Business are qualifications that could give you the skills and confidence you need to get started. These flexible courses let you learn at your own pace and will help you to decide whether running a business is right for you. Please see page 16 for our Enterprise and Entrepreneurship courses.
