THE WORD ON THE STREET

“I chose an apprenticeship as I felt this was the best way to learn for me – on the job. I didn’t want to be constantly in a classroom, I wanted to be hands on. I love cars and from an early age wondered how they worked, so volunteered to work in Auto Tyre Centre two days a week whilst still at school, once I had my GCSE results they offered me an apprenticeship and I haven’t looked back.” Brooklyn Pink Level 2 Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Maintenance Auto Tyre Service

“I’m troubleshooting general problems with IT as well as helping on the network side of things. I do one week at Land Rover BAR and one week at College, where I get a lot of support from my computing lecturers. It’s cool and my family are really proud.” Ryan Todd Gold IT Apprentice who became one of the youngest members of the Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing team at the age of 17

INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYERS

Apprenticeships are great news for employers, as well as giving young people a real opportunity to learn a valuable skill, while earning at the same time. They can raise the productivity of the business they join and give apprentices a sense of achievement and pride. Government reforms from April 2016 mean that it’ll be easier than ever for businesses to hire apprentices by abolishing employer’s National Insurance contributions for Apprenticeships under the age of 25.

What’s more, the Government is committed to going even further by delivering three million more Apprenticeships by 2020.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

What will your child get out of an Apprenticeship? In short, a world of opportunity, they: • Work in a real job for a real employer • Gain valuable work place skills and experience • Are paid a salary and have a contract of employment • Get paid holiday • Achieve qualifications • Get support from colleagues and the training organisation • Become more employable because they have experience of work • Have better career prospects once they complete their apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship can be a suitable option for everyone. Apprenticeships have changed a lot in the last 10 years – a huge range of opportunities are now available at a number of levels. Did you know, for example, that your son or daughter could achieve a full HND Bachelors or Masters Degree with a Degree Apprenticeship?

Getting an Apprenticeship is all about getting a job and starting a career. Employers want to employ apprentices with a positive attitude who are going to work hard, but they also want employees who are going to be able to pick up new skills and learn about their company from scratch.

“Both my two sons have done Apprenticeships instead of going to university. I definitely think Apprenticeships are the way to go.” Angie Boothby (Parent)
