Highbury College meets the needs of the marine industry by offering industry standard qualifications and training in a realistic working environment

The South East is the most important region in the UK for the marine industry. In Hampshire alone, almost 60,000 people are employed in this sector. New contracts coming into the area mean that many more people will need to be trained. Here at Highbury, we have close ties with the marine industry, ensuring that employers are provided with appropriate and up-to-date training in this rapidly developing sector. Our Marine Training Centre at Boathouse No. 4, Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth, has its own workshop facilities where students can acquire the essential skills and knowledge they need for a career in the marine industry. Students learn to operate powered equipment, such as saws, grinders and sanding machines, safely and effectively, as well as acquiring the basics of woodworking and composite moulding. Surrounded by related workshops and alongside famous warships HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, the Highbury Marine Training Centre provides students with a realistic working environment and close links to local marine businesses. This in turn promotes professionalism and many opportunities for networking and vocational progression.

Transferable Skills and Vocational Progression The students develop excellent hand tool skills and problem solving techniques, opening up a variety of career paths.

Bucklers Hard, New Forest Here we recreate 18th Century shipbuilding activity, working with large sections of timber, using pit saws, side axes, adzes, auger bits and similar period tools. We will also introduce arboriculture and felling, conversion and storage taught over two, two week sessions within the 47 week course. Assessment and Exams Assessment for our diploma is on-going throughout the course, with a handful of classroom based sessions to enhance your learning and a single theory exam at the end of the course.
