falcON in flight Falcon rescued and released at HHE

Did you know that falcons can be found all over the world, including right here in Hollywood, Florida?

On a February day, a falcon was found on Hollywood Hills Elementary’s campus by a staff member After the staff member found the falcon, they told Mr Jorge who took immediate action

“When I saw the falcon, I could tell it was hurt because it wasn’t moving much. Mrs. Martinez, a third-grade teacher, called a parent who is a wildlife veterinarian to come to the school to get the falcon,” Head Custodian Mr. Jorge said.

Renata Schneider, a veterinarian at Pelican Harbor Seabird Station and parent at Hollywood Hills Elementary, cares for sick and injured wild animals, with a goal of releasing wildlife back to its natural habitat. Schneider was contacted by Mrs. Martinez. Luckily, Schneider was still at work and was able to pick up the injured bird and bring it back to the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station

Schneider observed that the falcon had injuries to its head It was given medication, fluids, food, and a

place to rest Schneider took care of the bird and knew when it was time for it to go back to the wild

“The falcon started eating on its own We moved it to an outdoor habitat where it was flying around The day of the release, he actually tried to fly out of the cage, so we knew it was time,” Schneider said.

Some students at Hollywood Hills Elementary were lucky enough to observe the falcon being released to its natural habitat. On February 27, 2024, classes watched the release take place on the west side basketball court. Schneider explained the process of nursing the falcon back to health. Students observed in awe as the falcon flew up into the sky toward the nearest tree

“I learned that you should always bring an animal to the vet if it is hurt I felt happy that a baby falcon could get released back into the wild,” third grade student Graham said BY MAKAYLA, VANNA, AND ZERA
