HHE’s first ever Color Run

Imagine jumping, running, and getting splashed with color while navigating through an obstacle course. On September 30, at Hollywood Hills Elementary, students participated in a Color Run to raise money for the school.

“I ran around the whole school. I loved running around in the colors,” kindergarten student Audrey said.

HHE raised about $20,000 by sharing the MyFunRun website with family members and friends. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has many plans for the money raised including a super science night, movie night, and a colorful mural.

The Color Run was a successful fundraiser.

“With the money raised, the big exterior cafeteria wall by the field is going to have the most incredible mural painted on it,” PTA President Chelsey Hayes said.

Hollywood Hills parents and volunteers threw colors at the students while they made their way around the school. The students jumped through inflatable bounce houses while enjoying time with their friends.

“I found my friends and I had fun with them. I held their hands and ran. We got color all over our shirts. We went in a few of the bounce houses,” third grade student Gaya said.

The Color Run also brought happiness and joy to many students and their families. It was a great event for all.

“My favorite part was all of the smiling faces of the kids that participated in the Color Run. Looking back at the pictures that were taken, all the children were ecstatic and happy,” PTA President Chelsey Hayes said.

Lights, Camera, Accíon: HHE celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

BY ELISSA, MILANNA, SAVANNAH, AND SOPHIE On October 18, Hollywood Hills Elementary’s cafeteria was filled with color, music, and joy as the dual language students performed for families, friends, and students to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.

“It is important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month because lots of students at our school come from Hispanic backgrounds. We acknowledge different cultures that we have here at HHE and around the world,” fourth and fifth grade dual language teacher Mrs. Valens said.

From dancing to bullfights to singing and more, the dual language students ended Hispanic Heritage Month by performing at an evening event.

“We saw posters of Hispanic Heritage projects. We also saw a bullfight, a fashion show, and the kindergartners sing. The best part was the conga line because it was really fun,” fourth grade dual language student Olivia said.

Trunk or Treat Fun: HHE families enjoy trick or treating at school

BY KALEAH, LINA, AND MALACHI Trunk or Treat is a family event for kids at HHE. On October 27, students, families, and friends had a fun night of trick or treating at Hollywood Hills Elementary organized by the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

“I got candy and passed out candy. On that night, I actually tried a new candy, KitKats,” third grade student Farrah said.

HHE families and staff members decorated their cars. They also gave out candy that was donated by the students and their families.

“My family created the Control Board and decorated our car to represent the memories from one of our favorite movies, Inside Out!” math support teacher Mrs. Pacheco said. “I enjoyed spending time with my family and having the chance to see former and current HHE students having fun with their friends and families.”

Community Can Collecting: HHE particpates in the Harvest Drive

HHE students participated in the Harvest Drive by donating food items to families that are less fortunate and do not have food for Thanksgiving.

“The Harvest Drive is a wonderful fundraiser that donates goods for Thanksgiving. We collect food items for families that are in need,” School Counselor Mrs. Turner said.

This event was organized by the Student Council. They decorated boxes to put in classrooms to store food items that the students donated.

“I brought in canned food and pancake mix. I went on the morning announcements [with the other Student Council officers], Milah, Scarlett, and Zera. We announced that people should bring in food for the Harvest Drive to give to communities around Broward County,” Student Council President Justin said.

Adults For a Day: HHE students go to JA BizTown to learn how to be an adult

BY ANNABETH, CALEB, KEIRA, SETH, ZAMAR, AND ZERA Imagine a place where kids are adults for a day. Welcome to JA Biztown! On October 27, Hollywood Hills Elementary’s fifth grade students went on a field trip to JA Biztown.

“Students learned the responsibilities they need to have a job and earn a paycheck. They learned how to put their money into a bank account and how our society runs,” fifth grade teacher Mrs. Calabrese said.

JA Biztown has everything a regular town would have. It has food, money, and stores. The students were assigned different jobs and learned how to be responsible.

“The best part was experiencing and feeling what it is like to have a real job. I learned a lot of financial stuff like how to use a credit card. I learned what CEOs have to do and that having a job is not easy,” fifth grade student Jaela said.

For many students, JA Biztown was a learning experience. They learned about finance and how to manage money.

“I saw the students learning and the light bulbs going off. The students were telling me that they didn’t know how you pay bills and they didn’t know all you had to go through when you were at the bank. I think for me, being the educator, I enjoyed watching the students realize that it is not just getting money and spending it, but how they have to break up how that money is being used. It was a great field trip,” paraprofessional Ms. L said.

JA Biztown provides students with an opportunity to become adults. They work together to be successful at their jobs.

“Students learn how it could be in the future. It teaches you how to be an adult,” fifth grade student Shai said.
