From soccer to dance to football to basketball, there are many different sports that HHE students enjoy. The Panther Post interviewed HHE students by asking them, “What is your favorite sport?” and here are their responses: ALL interviews BY the panther post staff

“Gymnastics is my favorite sport. I like the tricks and want to learn them.”
“My favorite sport is dancing because I like moving a lot and it is fun.”
“I like basketball because it is fun and you need the skill to play.”
“I like golf because it is fun to play outside.”

In Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) Promise Club, students meet with HHE’s school counselor, Ms. Cesa, to learn about school safety. During these meetings, students participate in activities such as drawing chalk art, creating posters, and making encouraging messages to put around the school. The goal of this club is to make everyone feel safe at school by teaching students safety practices. SAVE
Promise Club hosted “Start with Hello” Day, which encourages students to make new friends and include others. This club is shaping the leaders of the future. “SAVE Promise Club creates school-wide activities that promote kindness and school safety,” school counselor Ms. Cesa said. “We help students by helping them feel included and make new friends, as well as through kindness activities.”
Imagine going on not one, but two field trips to learn about Florida’s history! Fourth and fifth graders at HHE visited St. Augustine and the Everglades. In January, the students went to learn about the oldest city in the United States. In St. Augustine, they visited many historical places including the Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. At the Everglades, students were able to view the animals and land
close up by taking an airboat ride and slogging. Both trips were educational and provided the fourth and fifth graders with learning opportunities about Florida. “At the Everglades, we went on an airboat ride, slogged through the mud, and even lost some shoes!” fourth and fifth grade teacher Mrs. Lucas said. “St. Augustine was amazing. We took a trolley ride around the city and saw many sites.”
On 2/22/22, tube socks, ties, and tutus were spotted all over HHE. Second grade teacher Ms. Rosende organized the celebration of Twosday. Flyers were sent home to encourage students to dress up and recognize the actual date. This is a rare date that does not happen often. The numbers 2/22/22 create a palindrome because it can be read backwards and forwards and it will still be the same. It is a
unique palindrome because the numbers are all the same. The last time this occurred was on 1/11/11. Twosday was a day to remember.
“I made a flyer that I shared with the whole school to celebrate Twosday,” Ms. Rosende said. “The majority of the students at HHE participated. A lot of the girls wore tutus and boys wore ties and tube socks. I loved seeing all the kids have fun at school!”
From February 28 to March 4, HHE students celebrated reading by spotlighting books written by Dr. Seuss. Students were encouraged to dress up for different spirit days including crazy hats and character costumes. Student council representatives “caught” students reading so that they could be entered in a raffle to win books. Literacy Coach Mrs. Kraus hosted Seusstactular Kraus in the House where she read Dr.
Seuss books and drew characters with HHE students. The week ended with a dance party, glow sticks, and candy. HHE students had a lot of fun reading Dr. Seuss books and celebrating literacy. “PTA did a wonderful job hosting Dr. Seuss Week. I loved seeing all the students participate in activities and celebrate reading,” Mrs. Kraus said. “It was so much fun reading Dr. Seuss books at Kraus in the House and on WHHE.”
Fourth grade students at Hollywood Hills Elementary now have the opportunity to participate in Book Club. Lee, a fourth grade student in Ms. Weichhan’s class, wrote a letter to Principal Fossas explaining the reasons why a book club should be created at HHE. Before Book Club, there were few clubs for fourth graders to join. Lee started the club so fourth grade students could have a club. The sponsors for Book Club are
reading support teacher Mrs. Dallas and Media Clerk Mrs. L. Gonzalez. Book Club gets kids excited to read. Let’s get reading! “At Book Club, we read books and we talk about them,” Book Club founder Lee said. “We recommended books to each other and made movie posters/ comics for our recommendations. My favorite part of Book Club is being with my friends and seeing how much people enjoy books.”
February is Black History Month and HHE celebrated this by learning about Black individuals who have impacted our world. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the greatest African American leaders that students learned about. Students also learned about Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and George Washington Carver, as well as many other inspiring people. Classes created posters and learned about the impact Black
Americans have had throughout history. These posters were displayed in the hallways so that all students could learn about history.
“I did a project on Jesse Owens for Black History Month. He was the fastest man in the world and won four Olympic gold medals,” third grade student Walford said. “I learned that you can change anything. It is important to celebrate Black History Month to honor people from the past.”
