Annual Report FY 2020 July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020
homes, communities, hope + you Our Mission Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
Our Vision A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
What We Do Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing by building simple, decent and affordable housing. We build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable housing. Habitat STW was founded in 1981 as the tenth Habitat affiliate in the U.S. and the first in Louisiana. 287 new home construction projects have been completed and sold to local partner families with no profit, affordable mortgages. Habitat STW is currently building houses primarily in Abita Springs, Covington and occasionally in Mandeville. We are always searching for new land and our building locations can change according to what land becomes available. Our service area includes Abita Springs, Covington, Folsom, Madisonville and Mandeville.

homes As a way to manifest God’s love, Habitat for Humanity St. Tamamny West creates opportunities for all people to live in decent, safe shelter. We put faith into action by helping to build and repair homes, and by partnering with families to broaden access to affordable housing as a foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty.
President’s Letter The first eight months of FY 2019-2020 were very routine - Women Build and W.A.T.C.H. in October, Habitat for Humanity Care-A-Vanners in November, Habitat STW home dedications, and our Community Partners’ Breakfast on March 5th. Then the world changed. During the last four months of FY 2019-2020, the pandemic impacted all aspects of our operations. Like the rest of the country, our affiliate shut down all operations for two months from March 14 - May 15, 2020. During that time frame, management staff worked to keep various projects moving forward and to lessen the impact of the stay at home order on Habitat homeowners and staff. Management staff also worked with Home Bank to provide escrow grants to Habitat homeowners who lost their jobs, had their hours cut, and/or were diagnosed with COVID-19. In doing this, the affiliate paid the homeowners’ escrow and simply added the due mortgage payments to the end of the mortgage loan. Through the submission and approval of a Paycheck Protection Program loan, all staff were paid and their benefits remained intact throughout the nation’s shut down. Prior to reopening, Habitat STW put in place policies and procedures to protect the health and well-being of homeowners, shoppers, volunteers, Board members, and staff. Once the affiliate reopened, ReStore sales were higher than expected, five Habitat homes were completed and sold, and five families working with our Homeownership Center purchased homes on the open market through USDA mortgage loans. In addition Women Build and W.A.T.C.H. exceeded our expectations. Habitat STW survived the pandemic and came back stronger due to the efforts of our community of donors, volunteers, shoppers, Board members, and staff. Thank you for your assistance during the infamous 2020! Sincerely,
Habitat STW President and CEO

St. Tammany Homeownership Center Homebuyer Services
In Pre-Purchasing Counseling, experienced counselors work with potential homebuyers to determine their mortgage readiness, evaluate credit and other requirements for financing. They work together to develop a plan to overcome any credit or savings obstacles and connect homebuyers with any available down payment assistance programs. Homebuyer Education Workshops guide potential buyers through all steps of the home buying process and provide information on protecting and preserving your home and investment.
Financial Fitness
Financial Fitness Workshops teach practical money management concepts and skills with the goal of building financial capacity and long-term financial success. With an emphasis on putting knowledge into action, it combines hands-on activities and small group discussion.
Homeownership Services
Buying a home is just the first step. Homeowners need the knowledge to care for what is likely to be the biggest investment they’ll ever make – a new home. Home Care & Maintenance classes are designed to help new homeowners understand basic home systems and preventive maintenance, and to plan for responsibilities of homeownership. In Home Repair/Rehabilitation Counseling, experienced counselors work with homeowners to provide information on available community resources and help qualified homeowners apply for affordable repair loans.

The ReStore The Habitat STW ReStore serves our mission of building homes, communities and hope in western St. Tammany Parish. At the Habitat STW ReStore, our staff and volunteers happily accept donations of new and gently used items. We sell those items to treasure hunters and bargain shoppers alike to raise money for our mission of eliminating substandard housing. Since its founding in 1988, the Habitat STW Restore has funded the construction of 32 homes. The Habitat STW ReStore provides a more affordable avenue for home improvement projects, all while keeping tons of perfectly good items from ending up in the landfill.

Construction Habitat STW is unique and blessed to have a mission where our supporters can engage in direct and meaningful ways. Volunteering on a construction site is one of them. Anyone who can swing a hammer or set a block in place is welcome to work with Habitat STW. Our construction volunteers are vital to Habitat’s mission. We offer volunteer opportunities year round. Throughout the year we rely on teams from the Care-AVanner program, Collegiate Challenge, faith organizations, schools and local businesses, as well as local volunteers who come once a year or once a week to keep our construction calendar on schedule. We are always excited to introduce new volunteers to the construction site. No previous construction knowledge or experience necessary! Depending on the stage of construction, volunteers can expect to: frame floors and walls, build porches, install windows and doors, complete insulation preparation, paint and finish interiors, set trusses, and landscape.
Habitat STW primarily builds in the western part of St. Tammany Parish. Our building locations change as we acquire available land. Habitat sets the stage for families and volunteers to come together. A family partners with Habitat and contributes their “sweat equity” or their own labor. A volunteer offers them a hand up, providing the support and the “muscle” that often means homes can be built at considerably lower costs. At a Habitat build site, relationships are formed and friends are made. Volunteer and change someon’es life - it could be yours.

We believe that dignity and hope are best achieved through accountable, equitable partnerships.
Hammers and Heels On August 23rd, the charming, historic Maison Lafitte hosted the second annual Hammers and Heels Fashion Show benefitting Women Build 2019. The day was filled with great food catered by The Lakehouse, beautiful fashion, and lots of fun as everyone gathered for a great cause. Before the show, guests enjoyed a cork pull game, libations, a photobooth, and a silent auction filled with excellent prizes. Women Build Homebuyer, Ed Dowling, performed a muscial show for the guests. Hammers and Heels showcased fashions from local shops au Darling, Blossom Girl, Brenchley, Cameo, Hemline, Lilly Pulitzer, MoveMe Fitness, Olive Patch, Paisley, Posh, The ReStore, Suella, Lifestyle Boutique at Franco’s and The Villa. The fashion show raised $12,000 towards the construction of the Dowling & Bunns Family homes.

Women Build
Fueled by Chevron
Women Build is an annual project in which Habitat STW empowers women, without excluding men, to build homes, enabling them to positively impact the lives of families and children by making homeownership a reality. It is the only time there is a fee to volunteer and is one of Habitat’s driving fundraisers each year. In 2019, Chevron donated $25,000 towards the construction of the Dowling & Bunns Family homes, fueling the project’s mission. Any woman who wants to learn how to build and construct a home is invited to join us. No experience is necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, and also alongside other volunteers and future Habitat STW homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved and improves the community that you share. Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family of all ages in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. You can also come alone, and make new friends. The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly. There are many opportunities to get involved with Women Build including sponsorships and joining W.A.T.C.H (Women Accepting The Challenge of Housing). W.A.T.C.H. is a group of dedicated ladies who ensure Women Build continues to thrive in western St. Tammany. It began in 2009 when a group of women accepted the challenge by pledging $1,000 a year. In recognition and appreciation of their support, members wear a hand-crafted glass lapel pin created by Carol Lapari designs.
Ed Dowling
Women Build Stats Infographic
On November 19, Habitat STW held a memorial service for homebuyer Ed Dowling. A disabled veteran and retired professional jazz musician, Ed partnered with Habitat STW to achieve homeownership and was chosen as one of the 2019 Women Build homebuyers. With his charming personality, tenacity, and enthralling stories, Ed touched the hearts of everyone he encountered. Unfortunately, Ed passed away unexpectedly before having the chance to move into his Habitat home, but Habitat STW wanted to honor his memory and lasting impression he made on everyone he met. Many who learned of Ed’s story, knew that the first thing he wanted to do after moving into his Habitat home was raise the American flag he owned since 1974. To keep this promise, Habitat STW dedicated a flag pole in Ed’s honor. VP/Compliance Officer for Heritage Bank of St. Tammany Randy Ponthieux, created the flag pole and raised the flag during the ceremony. The flag pole now waves outside of the Habitat STW ReStore in memory of a great man. Edward Dowling will be greatly missed by Habitat STW staff, board members, volunteers, and supporters.

Tkeyah Bunns “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 This is the bible verse that inspires Tkeyah Bunns through life’s journey. A custodian at Madisonville Elementary, Tkeyah is a single mother to 15-month-old daughter Riley. They currently live in an overcrowded family home resulting in Tkeyah and Riley sharing a room. Tkeyah has always dreamt of owning her own home, but realized she couldn’t afford the typical mortage price in the community. Not wanting to prolong her dream, she applied to partner with Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West (Habitat STW) to achieve homeownership. After being approved, she hit the ground running on her sweat equity hours by working at the Habitat STW ReStore. “I really enjoy working at the ReStore,” says Tkeyah. “The staff is amazing and I love meeting all the volunteers and homeowners during my shift.” Tkeyah also enjoys attending the required homeownership education courses, with her favorite being Financial Fitness. “The financial fitness classes make you reflect on how much you’re spending and help you with budgeting,” says Tkeyah. “During this class series we also created vision boards to help us visualize our goals and then discussed how we can accomplish them.” The Bunns Family Women Build Fueled by Tkeyah also notes that the Home Maintenance classes are extremely beneficial. “I have never owned a home,” says Tkeyah. “I just feel better prepared knowing these skills, such as how to change an AC filter. I didn’t know you needed to do that!”
As a single mother, Tkeyah firmly believes that women have the ability to do whatever they put their minds to. She is a huge proponent of “doing it herself ” and is excited to be included in a project with this encouraging message. Tkeyah feels home is a place you can call your own, filled with safety and comfort. Her biggest motivation during this process is knowing that she will be providing her daughter with a safe, stable home that will always be her shelter. After moving into their Habitat home, Tkeyah believes that life will be less stressful. A graduate of Paul Mitchell Vanguard, she hopes to pursue her dream career of being a hair stylist. By becoming a Habitat homeowner, she will not only build a home, but the strength, stability, and selfreliance for a better future. “To all the volunteers, I really appreciate everything you do. It’s not taken lightly,” says Tkeyah. “I pray that God blesses you for all the good that you’ve done and are doing. You are amazing!” The construction of the Bunns Family Home was part of Women Build 2019 Fueled by Chevron. Tkeyah and her daughter, Riley, purchased and moved into their Habitat STW home in March 2020.
Community Partners Breakfast In March 2020, Habitat STW held the 8th Annual Community Partners Breakfast at Tchefuncte Country Club where guests were invited to learn how their support of our mission directly impacts our community. During this free, one hour event, guests heard from two Habitat STW homeowners, Kashanie Warren and Tommy Savoie. They shared how homeownership has not only impacted their lives, but the lives of their children. The event raised $125,000 in one-time donations and three year pledges. Over the last eight years, the Community Partners Breakfast has funded the construction of 14 Habitat STW homes.

Homeowner Updates Antoinette McGee has been in her home for 4 years. Antoinette works at St. Tammany Parish Library and has been promoted to manager of a computer lab. She says since having the stability of owning a home, her children’s grades have improved and her oldest son, Dakota, is in his fourth semester at Southeastern majoring in Engineering. With the money she saved by owning a home, she was able to get a new vehicle and help her son get a car to make the commute to school. Her family loves the new home and she is very happy she took the leap and entered our program.
Habitat STW homeowner, Carly, was named Deputy of the Quarter for St. Tammany Parish Corrections Division. Carly purchased her Habitat STW home in 2017. Moving into her Habitat STW home provided her the opportunity to finish her Associates Degree and accept a new position, with benefits, working with the St. Tammany Parish Sherriff ’s Office.
