/welcome

A very warm welcome to you all, whether you find yourself coming to Kensington Square for the first time, or if this is simply a continuation of a no doubt fruitful Heythrop career. I have the fortune to be your President over the coming year, and it’s important that you know, now more than ever, that I lead a union whose job is to represent you, and what you and our fellow students want from the College. I hope that many of you will look to get involved with the Union this coming year, and with a vacant Campaigns post, there is every opportunity for you to do so – as well as through speaking to your Union representatives. Of course, the Union is not only

2

here for representation, and I look forward to seeing you all at the numerous events and activities that will be held throughout the year – kicking off with HeyFest! Be it your preferred sport, having a few drinks, or maybe just relaxing with a film we hope to cater for everyone – and if nothing takes your fancy, then get in touch and I’ll see what I can do! This year, change is unavoidable; let’s make it for the better.

your

UNION. / meet the staff

A warm Heythrop welcome to you all ahead of the new academic year. I was delighted to be appointed this summer as the new Heythrop Students’ Union Manager and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead. Heythrop has a tradition for “changing when change is needed” and the decisions made in the last academic year, initially that no new Undergaduates will be recruited in September 2015 and then the more recent decision to cease to exist in our current form, as an autonomous college of the University of London post2018, has created a situation in which our Students’ Union has needed to change as well.

Whilst I’m sure there has been much sadness about these decisions it is now my role, alongside Oliver and Stefan, to make sure that your student experience and the opportunities that are available to you are the best that they can possibly be. Onsite we will be working more closely with our counterparts at Fordham’s London satellite campus, as well as welcoming a number of intercollegiate students into our community in the Halls of Residence, to ensure that our beautiful site remains vibrant and full of life. Over the Summer we have been working on a number of new projects such as acquiring a TEDx University licence which will allow us to put on an event in the next 12 months. By the time term begins, we hope to have an

3

online room booking system that will enable students and/or societies to book spaces with greater ease. We are also delighted to announce that Peter Mackay, a former Heythrop student, will be joining our HSU team for one year as our Student Experience Officer. There are also a wide range of new activities and opportunities to throw yourself into under the Student Experience Commitment banner: Do you want to volunteer abroad? Do you want to audit 30 credits free of charge? Do you want an internship? Do you want to try out a new sport or activity? Make sure that you come along to the HeyFest Fayre on Wednesday 23rd September in the Newman and Campion Rooms between 4.00pm and 6.30pm to find out more from the Student Experience stall. In this coming academic year I would like to strongly encourage you all to get the most out of your Union and your University. Matt Holland HSU MANAGER

Hi everyone, I’m Peter and I’m the new Student Experience Officer for the HSU. I’m here to make sure you can engage in many different activities, provide superb and diverse events and help facilitate employability initiatives. I’ll be working closely with the Student Activities Officer, Events team and the HSU manager. I can be found in the new HSU Advice Centre. If you have any questions I’ll be happy to help wherever I can. Wishing you an enjoyable year at Heythrop. Peter Mackay HSU STUDENT EXPERIENCE OFFICER

Welcome, and welcome back! My name’s Oliver Holdsworth, and I have the privilege of being the President of your union for this coming year. I hope you will feel that you can come to me, or any other member of our capable and eager union, with any issues you have regarding student experience. I’m a 3rd year philosophy student, and when I’m not working for you, or losing hair over Kripke, you’ll find me practising the Tuba, playing chess, or fixing a perpetually broken bicycle. I’m very excited to work with you all over the coming year, and hope that collectively we can shape the course of the remainder of our studies at Heythrop.

Hello all, I am so happy to have been given the opportunity to contribute to such a strong community. I am passionate as the Italians and polite like the British, I make sure a project’s done from its start to its finish. As a goalie I don’t let balls through to try and let Heythrop win but if you knock on my door I’ll be sure to let you in. Yes, I know of tyranny, I’ve done it for my past first year of PPE but please know that won’t be the case as the VP is me, I really want people to fully enjoy this place,

6

so please come talk to me, face to face, if there’s anything you wish for your uni to change or if you find something difficult or strange please contact me with an email, with many means and then some, Facebook me, send a letter, tell my brother or even my mum. By you I have been picked for this position and thus to you is bound my mission

Stefan Barratt HSU VICE PRESIDENT

Hi I’m Satchi and I have the pleasure of being your Academic Affairs Officer for this year. I’m a 2nd year Abrahamic Religions student and if you have any issues which relate to or affect your studies in any way, then its my job to do something about it. I also represent you at various academic board meetings and am the co-chair of the Undergraduate Student Staff Liaison Committee, which allows me to give your feedback directly to members of staff. Whether it’s during my office hours or just when you see me around College I’m always free for a chat and I hope that I can make your academic experience this year the best it can possibly be.

Satchi Mahendran ACADEMIC OFFICER

Hello! I’m Juliet, I’m Rhiannon, and together we are your Events Team. We’re here to help make any of your event-dreams a reality. Our job is to throw a party when you don’t have time to, or add method (and money) to your madness. Nonni and I have a passion for people, and getting them together, and have made it our mission to get as many people involved and having fun as possible. We want to take your heady ideas whether it’s for a society, good cause or

7

excuse to let loose, and make sure they come together smoothly and efficiently. For those of you that know us, there is little doubt that we are enthusiastic about having a good time, and the many avenues that get you there, and for those of you that don’t, we will be introducing ourselves and making ourselves available throughout HeyFest and the coming year, so we hope to become familiar faces. You’ll find us hanging around campus, on Facebook or down in the HSU advice centre. We hope to focus on giving back this year and will be working with the exec and especially the welfare team and LGBT officer to host fundraising and awareness events about issues you feel impact the lives of all Heythrop students. A little about us as individuals, Juliet has a penchant for cats (especially her three black ones), shiny things, environmental causes and crafting anything from crosstitch to protest posters, Nonni is also a co-leader of the feminist society, knows the lyrics to almost every song and loves Netflix, napping

8

and greedily receiving Juliet’s crafts. We both quite like the pub as well… feel free to buy us a drink instead of a thank you if you enjoyed an event! If not we will have an anonymous feedback box near the HSU office (fingers crossed its hardly used…)

Juliet Branfield Rhiannon Hopkins EVENTS OFFICERS

WE REPRESENT YOU.

Hi, I’m Paul, I’m the LGBT+ officer for HSU this academic year. I’m in my second year of my Theology degree. I’m probably the biggest Whitney Houston fan at Heythrop and if it were up to me I would make it compulsory to sing a Whitney Houston song at the start of every lecture and I would also build a shrine to Whitney in the Heythrop garden. On a more serious note I’m here to cater for your needs and make sure that anybody who identifies with the LGBT+ community is being fairly treated/represented. Or even if you’re not part of the LGBT+ community feel free to come see me, I’m a very good listener! I hope I can help make this next year amazing for you all! Thank you.

Paul Casey LGBT OFFICER

Hey, my name is Sinead and I am a second year Philosophy student here at Heythrop. This year I am part of the executive committee as Publicity Officer. When I’m not studying or working I enjoy being active and researching graphic designers. Free wall space in my room is becoming a precious commodity, the more pieces I collect. As publicity officer I will be making posters, taking photographs and using the inspiration I’ve gained. Exciting things are planned for this year beginning with Heyfest and I look forward to witnessing this year as Heythrop’s best. .

I’m Megan Kendall, and I’m your new Female Welfare Officer. I’m in my second year studying BA Philosophy. I’m currently part of the Feminist Society and Netball Society and hope to incorporate a new emphasis on physical wellbeing into the aims of the Welfare team this year due to my interests in mindfulness, yoga and relaxation therapy. In the coming year, please feel free to come and see me if you need advice, information or someone to talk to. You’ll be able to do this during my office hours, which I hope to publish at the beginning of the new academic year, or get in contact via my Female Welfare Facebook page and I’ll do my absolute best

to be of help, as soon as possible. I hope that students at Heythrop feel able to see the new Welfare team as a bridge of communication between their concerns and the help they wish to receive – I’m intent on creating a sincere, confidential relationship with anyone that needs my support and guidance. Remember, no problem is too big or too small to come to me with, even if it’s just a bad hair day!

I will be an active member of the Union with drop in sessions happening throughout the year, so my presence in the College should be known. I hope this means that I can be someone you can come to with any issues you may have. Especially in this time of change in the college, I will be committed to supporting student welfare in a way that upholds its current faculties. I’m currently going into my second year studying Philosophy and hope that over this year you continue to share in the truly unique community that is Heythrop College. I hope to publish my office hours at the start of term, in the mean time please don’t hesitate to contact me on my student email at: Caleb. Assirati@heythropcollege.ac.uk

A relaxed space to study. It is kitted out with computers and printers so you can do some research and print out essays.

Opportunities exist to compete nationally, but also internationally, discussing issues ranging from international relations, to science, to philosophy. Futhermore, the society looks forward to hosting public debates within Heythrop, through which members may apply their oratory skills in defence of pertinent social issues.

Come join us for regular Patriarchy-smashing debate, protest, and be welcomed into a UK-wide network of fantastic liberation activists. You don’t have to be a woman, you just have to be a feminist. If you don’t know whether you’re a feminist, come along and find out!

POKEMON SOCIETY

Yup, you read that right, Heythrop College has a Pokemon Society now. No Classics Society, no Computing Society, no Photography Society but a Pokemon Society. We mostly play Pokemon weekly down in the Common Room but occasionally we do some other fun stuff from Smash Bros Tournaments to just going out and getting plastered. No harm in liking that Facebook page at least: https://www.facebook.com/HCPokesoc

The philosophy society offers a platform upon which to explore any and all philosophical questions and entice interest outside of lectures and private study. Everyone should feel able to speak to their Union to raise issues about any aspect of student life. Because of Heythrop’s small size , your voice is effectively louder. Consequently, Heythrop is a personal college. There are many Societies

that support a number of different communities and interest groups . If you want to see some more of your interests included within Heythrop, we’ll be happy to supporting you . Promoting equality is a top priority of the Union. Many events this year will be organsied with diversity in mind. Beginning with the EqualiTea Party planned this coming Heyfest.
