THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE COMMITMENT 19 HEYFEST EVENTS SCHEDULE 20

Firstly, we would like to draw your attention to the representation and support that we provide during your time here. We have student representation on every College committee feeding back issues that students or Programme Reps have raised, we also have two Student Governors in the President and Vice President Academic. If you have an issue with any aspect of your course then please get in contact; we can also provide support and advice if things go wrong. We hope that you will get involved with your Union in this last full year of teaching at Heythrop College, UoL. We’ve undergone a number of changes in the last two years to maintain and enhance the student representation that we provide as well as the activities that we put on as a Union or in collaboration with the College, namely the Student Experience Commitment (also referred to as TOPSE). It is our aim to help provide you with the best experience that we can and as many different opportunities as possible over the coming year. From taster sessions in life drawing, to subsidised theatre tickets, to courses on financial awareness, to our spectacular Summer Ball, there is a wide range of activities for you to engage with. There are grants available for conferences, for employability purposes, for overseas volunteering and for external activities. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to regularly browse the weekly student experience newsletter, keep an eye out for our leaflets and to follow us on our various social media accounts. The opportunities available have been significantly enhanced for these last few years of teaching so be sure to make the most of them.

2

Over the summer, we’ve spent a lot of time improving and building upon a number of different facets of the Union. Our Common Room has been updated with the latest video games, plus a newly renovated pool table and some aesthetic improvements to existing furniture have helped spruce the basement up. The Reading Room has been transformed into an amazing, classy quiet space alternate to the library for you to get lost in a book. We’ve also been reaching out to other SUs of small & specialists institutions in London, with the aim to build a small network that shares information and activities; hopefully you will start to benefit from the fruits of that work over the coming year. Heyfest is shaping up to be a fantastic experience as well, bigger and better than it’s ever been before, but you’ll find out more about that soon enough. Let’s work together to make the most out of the next year.

MEET THE Henry “Doesn’t actually play that much Pokemon” Edwards-Xu (President) As you can no doubt tell from the name tag above, I’m Henry Edwards-Xu and I have the honour of representing the Heythrop student body as Students’ Union President for the last year of full teaching at Heythrop College, University of London. What can I say about me…? I’m born on the 19th August, 1996, making me twenty years old at the beginning of this academic year, I’m a third year studying for a BA in Philosophy, my star sign is Leo and I’m reliably informed that my ‘moon’ sign is Cancer, whatever that means. I have a reaction time of about 200 ms on a good day, wake up two hours late for work or college on a bad day, and I always carry an umbrella on an ugly day. I suppose, more relevantly, it might be worth mentioning that I also run the fine Pokemon Society here at Heythrop. Some people also speculate that they’ve seen me at Game Soc, but I wouldn’t take those rumours too seriously if I were you. Anyway, if you’d ever like to complain about how I’m running the Union into the ground, you can try and find me in the HSU office or napping in the common room. If not, I’m probably either in a lecture, a meeting, or at home doing my best to avoid you. In that case, email me at hsupresident@heythrop.ac.uk and tell Matt to shout at me. Hell hath no fury like an executive manager scorned.

Mawia “Still needs to watch Star Wars” Ahmed (Vice-President Academic) Hello everyone. My name is Mawia Ahmed and I’m a third year Philosophy, Politics and Ethics student. I’ll be your Vice President Academic over the coming year, a position I’m very grateful to have fulfilled. I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer, the exec and I look forward to welcoming you to Heythrop for the 16/17 year. We’ve been working towards providing everyone with a variety of unique opportunities which I hope you’ll find fruitful. Whether you’re just joining the College or are approaching the latter stages of your degree, I’d like to warmly encourage you to take advantage of what’s on offer. I believe that this year it’ll be vital to make sure that every individual is strongly supported and able to have a great time. I’m confident that this can be a memorable year and through engaging with you, hope the HSU can be an integral part of this. The changes to my role mean I’ll also be taking on the responsibility of academic affairs. This is an area I care greatly about and wish to build on in the year ahead. I’m also committed to do all I can to protect the core work of the HSU in the most worthwhile way. If you have any queries relating to these areas or how my role works please don’t hesitate to contact me: hsuvpa@heythrop.ac.uk. Finally, I hope you all have a smooth transition into the term and I wish all the best in your studies. Contact: hsuvpa@heythrop.ac.uk 4

Louise “Everyone’s Lovely” Woods

(General Executive Officer)

(General Executive Officer) Hi, I’m Louise. I’m not an overly interesting person; I study Philosophy and Theology, quite like being at Heythrop, and feel ever so lucky to be part of such a wonderful exec team this year. Having been given so much by the college and its students in the past two years I really wanted to be able to give it something in my final year. It may not be much but being in a general officer position I am happy, to adapt, learn, and help you guys out in whatever way I can. Contact: Louise@ heythropsu.co.uk

Jenny “It’s short for Jennifer” White

(General Executive Officer) I’m Jenny and I’m studying Abrahamic Religions. I ran to be an executive officer because I believe that we all need to work together to make the last year of undergraduate study a great one. We are here to make sure that this year goes as smoothly and stress free as possible, so if you have any suggestions or problems let us know and we’ll do what we can to help (except with your dissertations- we’ll all suffer together with those). Contact: Jenny@ heythropsu.co.uk

Hi, I’m Satchi. As academic affairs officer last year I’ve got experience of the work of the Union, but as I was in a time consuming role I didn’t get to contribute to the other parts of of it as much as I would’ve liked. So I’ve signed up again and want to help out in as many areas as I can and make the last year a great one, with really memorable events that use the small numbers that we have to our advantage. I’ve had a good experience of careers having completed an internship this summer and have already started some work in events contributing to Heyfest. I look forward to making this the best year at Heythrop! Contact : Satchi@ heythropsu.co.uk 5

I’m Stefan. I’m an under cover agent for MI5 pretending to be a Philosophy, Politics and Ethics students. You see, I used to be the VicePresident in a weird but fun year for the college. But now things have changed. Tun-tun-taaaaaa (drama sound effect) My mission is to take back control of the HSU with one objective: I’ve been sent by the government (of students) to make sure students have fun and feel happy in this uni, by all means necessary (mostly by adapting to whatever role they need me to have). I’ve got a licence to make students chill. Having been given so much by the college and its students in the past two years I really wanted to be able to give it something in my final year. (General Executive Officer, co-opted until By-Election)

(General Executive Officer, co-opted until By-Election) Why am I here? I didn’t run, or get elected. What happened? Oh well, better make the best of it. Might even do something useful. But enough of unlikely ambitions. Most of you know me by this time; and for those who don’t know me by name, I’m the prat in the waistcoats. I planned to run for position only if the union was undermanned, not sure why I doubted it would be, so I’ve been coopted in for the summer, and will be running in the coming year. I’ll tell you if I make a pig’s ear of it, but otherwise please vote for me. Contact: William @heythropsu.co.uk

Last year I studied in Leuven, Belgium, the town where Heythrop was established in 1614. I’m now back and ready in full force to take on the tasks of Heythrop Student Union. One thing I learnt out there, apart from how awful beer hangovers are, is that there is nothing like being a part of something unique. Having seen where it started, it’s a pleasure to spend this final year with our Heythrop family and watch Heythrop College as we know it, bow out. I look forward to being more involved and sharing this experience with you all, it’s good to be back. Contact: Natasha @heythropsu.co.uk

YOUR VOICE

We’re here to represent the students, but we can’t do that unless you speak up.

In the last full year of UoL teaching, it’s important to bring issues to light as soon as possible so they can be resolved in time to affect your studies. To that end…

  8

HSU EXECUTIVE OFFICERS Once upon a time, the officer positions were specialised to handle different areas of the student experience. This year, the volunteer officer positions have all undergone a redevelopment into a more general position. Reach out to any of the officers from the last few pages about any issue you might be experiencing, from representation, academics, events, the end of the college, the inevitability of death or the Gettier problem.

PROGRAMME REPRESENTATIVES Have an issue with your course either in content, how it’s taught or otherwise? Then it might be worth bringing it to the attention of your course’s Programme Rep. These brave souls are selectively bred and trained from a young age (probably) to deliver feedback about your course to the people in charge of teaching, along with the Vice President Academic. The UG reps are invited to the Undergraduate Student-Staff Liaison Committee which serves as the main point of contact between staff and UG students. PG reps will continue to be a more flexible position, with feedback requested over email rather than set time commitments; this change enabled the Union to increase its PG rep head count from zero to seven last year. If you would like to be considered for a PG rep position then please contact hsuvpa@heythrop.ac.uk

GENERAL MEETINGS Ordinary General meetings and one Annual General meeting per academic year. This is an opportunity to instigate big changes with how the Union operates, for us to update students on matters of the College and, most importantly, for you to tell us what you want to see from your Union. In recent years, matters as large as the structure of the Union and as small as the location of the microwave in the basement have all been discussed here. Keep your eyes out for posters for these meetings and please make every effort to attend!

THE UNION The upper echelons of the Union consists of Henry (hey, that’s me!), Mawia, Matt and Pete and can be found in the HSU Advice Centre during most of our work hours. If you ever think of something you want to bring up on your way to the common room or the toilet, then feel free to stick your head in! Helping out students and making their time here the best it can be is pretty much what we’re here for.

OCTOBER BY-ELECTION Additionally, there are still a few openings available for officer positions so if you’re interested in being the helper rather than the helped, get ready for campaigning season, because by-elections start soon after the beginning of the year! Take a look at the schedule and keep an eye on your emails for more information. Please email m.holland@heythrop.ac.uk or hsupresident@heythrop.ac.uk if you have any queries.

JUNIOR COMMON ROOM (JCR) AND BAR

This is your student space, an nice area to kick back between lectures, or have a spot of lunch, or socialise with friends. Throughout the year, we’ll be running plenty of events in this space where the bar will also be open! We’ve refurbished and upgraded a lot of the older equipment and furniture in here, so please feel free to make full use of it in your time here at Heythrop.

READING ROOM

Need a quiet space to study but the libraries are just a bit too cramped and crowded? Feel free to make use of the Reading Room, a more chilled out area to focus with an atmosphere that’s entirely up to you. This room holds a small collection of classic books, as well as some comfortable seating and a workspace. Some society meetings may also use this space throughout the year.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

All the computers of the IT suite with less natural sunlight and a weird seating colour arrangement. Do some work or watch some Netflix, we won’t judge you (much).

HSU ADVICE CENTRE

A room of curiosity, containing such bizarre objects as peanut butter, weights and meaningless certificates. It may or may not also contain a few important members of the Union (hint: it does), so if you have any queries or concerns then this is generally where you want to be. If you would like to find out about the Unions events, sign up for a Student Experience Commitment activity or seek some advice on an academic issue then come down to the main offices for the Union.

THE CAVE

Please go here it’s actually quite nice now that we’ve tidied it up. Even if it’s just to draw inappropriate chalk drawings on the walls. In all seriousness, a few society meetings take place in here so it’s worth knowing where it is.

LION OFFICE

This is where the editors and writers of the College newspaper gather to practise their craft. If you have a passion for journalism and College affairs, then you’ll likely be seeing this place a lot. Please contact the Lion at thelion@heythrop.ac.uk

MUSLIM PRAYER ROOM

If the college is open, then the prayer room is open. The suggested space for fulfilling your religious obligations.

Lockers

YOUR SPACE 12

Spaces to stash away your secret diary amongst overdue library books and folders. We have a variety of sizes and £10 will get you one for the whole academic year (September to August). Pop in to the HSU office for more details or email m.holland@heythrop.ac.uk

SPORTS EQUIPMENT CUPBOARD

Did you know that the Union has a sports cupboard? Just opposite the ladies toilet in the basement you can find a whole host of sporting equipment which you are welcome to use whenever you like! Equipment includes basketballs, badminton nets, rackets and shuttlecocks, tennis rackets and balls, footballs, goalposts, a range of cricket equipment, hockey sticks and balls, rugby balls, pumps for the balls and a range of garden games. Please use this equipment as much as you like! 13

HEYTHROP PRIDE Heythrop Pride is Heythrop’s LGBTQ+ society. As a society, we aim to represent all those that identify on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, as well as those who are simply friends of our community! We aim to provide a safe, non-discriminatory, fun space where everyone is welcome regardless of sexual orientation or religious background. Heythrop Pride will be holding a variety of fun events throughout the year, such as weekly coffee meetings and big nights out, as well as working with the UoL LGBT network to broaden our community further. All are welcome!

Heythrop Pride is run by Zahrah Al-Merei. Email: pride@heythropsu.co.uk for more information.

FEMSOC This year FemSoc will be run a little differently. With most of us living out of halls this year, FemSoc will become a roaming society, with bi-weekly events held across the capital, off campus, to take us on a feminist tour of our city. During term time, twice a month, we will make the most of all the informative and exciting feminist happenings in London. From visiting feminist bookshops, conferences, pub debates and late night social events, a fully rounded, meaningful and purposeful series of events will keep us connected to the wider feminist movement across London. These are uncertain and scary times, with attacks on queer culture, WoC, and domestic violence services across the capital, it is time our little FemSoc became involved in the wider feminist fightback, to promote equality, support each other and fight for justice for those marginalised groups. Join us to get informed, supported, educated and politically active! Nonni X

THE LION When The Lion started, the editor bought ten boxes, expecting ten volumes. But as we all know, there just aren’t ten years to spare. However, while the newspaper format has bade a dignified farewell, this year you can expect a magazine straight from the noble traditions of The Spectator and the New Statesman: politics, in-house cartoons, letters, gossip, and a literary section for stories and poems. Speak to myself or to Ben Mercer if you have any questions, and don’t be afraid to publish. Let’s make it a good one.

NETBALL SOCIETY Hi there and welcome back to another year at this wonderful place we call Heythrop! It is the last year for many things at Heythrop College, including joining a fun, active and incredibly social society. If you enjoy exercise (with lots of laughs thrown in) then this is definitely the society for you. We are an all-inclusive society, so guys as well as girls are encouraged to join. Last year we held a few social events as well as practising and honing our netball skills on a weekly basis. If this sounds like the kind of society you would like to join, then come along and sign up at the societies fair. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

Netball Society is run by Rachel Atkinson and Megan Kendall. Email: netball@heythropsu.co.uk for more information.

POKEMON SOCIETY The winner of the “Best New Society of the year” in 2014-15 and “Best Society of the Year” in 2016-17, comes the Pokemon Society! Indeed, no other society has been the very best like this one has (I am so fed up of forcing this pun…). As the Pokemon franchise continues its 20th anniversary year, the Pokemon Society will also hold many events, for the new releases of Pokemon Sun and Moon, Pokemon GO walks, the addition of powerful GX cards in the Trading Card Game and even for the addition of new fighters in Pokken Tournament. We also have close ties with Richmond’s “Club Smash” and Westminster’s own Pokemon Society; which should lead to some really cool opportunities from us! Please ‘like’ our page at www.facebook.com/hcpokesoc if you’re interested!

Pokémon society is run by Henry Edwards-Xu. Email: pokemon@heythropsu.co.uk for more information.

External Activities Fund Due to the College’s ongoing situation and the reduction in student numbers both the College and the HSU have been working hard to find creative and innovative solutions to ensure you get the best Student Experience for your final year. Whilst we still have a range of societies you can join at Heythrop we recognise that this number is not as high as it once was. Therefore we have introduced the ‘External Activities Fund’ which will allow you to join a society at a fellow institution and the College will cover your costs for this endeavour; up to £60 per student. This gives you the benefit of trying out something new, or something that in years past Heythrop could afford you, and offers the opportunity to meet new students and engage in multiple communities. Further information on how to make use of this fund will be available before the start of term. 18

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE COMMITMENT For the teach out period, a £100,000 budget has been allocated to the College to further the breadth of opportunities for students studying in the 2015-2017 period. The opportunities outlined below have been selected by a committee of students and staff and are offered in addition to the existing opportunities provided by the College’s Enrichment Programme. This year, the selection has been expanded even further, with enhanced features such as the self-sourced internship scheme. For queries or to suggest additional activities, please email experience@heythrop.ac.uk. The types of opportunities available to you over the course of the next year include a range of Internship schemes, employability and overseas volunteering grants, an additional conference budget, language classes, taster sessions, health and wellbeing events, increased counselling, women in leadership talks, two careers consultants and subsidised tickets to fantastic events across the capital. The Union is highly involved in the Student Experience Commitment and is directly involved in the following areas: • Taster Sessions • Subsidised Tickets • Workshops • Careers Dinner • Employability initiatives (as a second partner to the Enrichment department) The Union has been working hard over the summer to provide you with excellent opportunities in all of these areas. Some of the opportunities we will be offering you are: • Tickets to the ATP tournament opening day • Tickets to Don Giovanni • Tickets to England v Fiji Rugby at Twickenham • Wine Tasting at West London Wine School • Pottery Taster Class • Champagne Tasting on the London Eye • Go Karting • A new internship programme (in conjunction with the Enrichment programme) There are many other options which we are considering (such as Ice Climbing!) so if you have a passion that you would like to be explored please get in contact with us and we will do our best to facilitate that activity or event. Either come into the Advice Centre in the basement or drop us an email at hsu@heythrop.ac.uk. We have purchased vouchers for some of our activities which will be available on the online shop, once you have booked please contact us to arrange the booking for your experience. For further information please see the Student Experience Commitment page: www.heythrop.ac.uk/experience 19
