HSU FRESHERS' GUIDE 2012

WELCOME Hi there! My name is Ashley, and as President of the Heythrop Students’ Union, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the most wonderful and surreal three years of your life. Your receipt of this booklet tells me that you have accepted a place as an undergraduate at Heythrop College, University of London, a wise choice if I do say so myself. You’ve chosen to attend the most diverse and exciting institution in the country with a proud reputation for seeking to learn more about others and challenging preconceptions. You’ll hear a lot these days about the “commercialisation of education” and how students are no more than “consumers”, but here at Heythrop you’ll realise that although value for money is important, especially with the fees now at the rate they are, education is so much more than a commodity for one to barter. A Heythrop education fundamentally changes people, and you’ll definitely leave here a far more reasoned and respectful individual. Obviously many employers value the skills that one develops through our courses, but it is so much more than that. An education at this college trains you to be a more engaged and active member of society. I can honestly say that after three years studying here I have found that to be true, and, other than a few eccentricities I’ve picked up, I feel I’m definitely a more well-rounded individual. You find yourself entering at possibly one of the most exciting times for the Heythrop Students’ Union ever. Thanks to my predecessor, Gala Jackson-Coombs, we now have two full time sabbatical officers of the Union, your Vice President Alex Hackett and myself. Alex, the team and I have been working extremely hard over the summer to get together a year Heythrop will never forget, as well as fully renovating all of the downstairs areas (with some help from College) to ensure that this year, and for years to come, Heythrop students have a common area they can be proud of. Your Freshers’ Week is packed to bursting with activities and events that will leave you astounded that a Union the size of ours managed to do so much with a week. This handy little booklet is our gift to you, to ensure you make the best of your Freshers’ Week and includes info on the events, a little friendly advice on living in London from our Welfare team, the names and faces of the beautiful people that make up your Executive Committee this year and ways that you can get involved in the workings of the Union straight from the off. You’ve got a fantastic three years ahead of you and I can’t wait to welcome you in person come September.

YOUR VOICE We at the Heythrop Students’ Union are keen to get as many people involved in our activities as possible. We also highly value feedback from our members on anything from quality of events to level of welfare support and any improvements we could make to our services and facilities. To that end there are many opportunities for you to share your feedback and get involved over a broad range of areas.

The General Meeting Held once a term this is the biggest forum for you to have your say outside of elections. Anything you feel should come to the attention of the Student Union as a whole can be brought to the General Meeting and discussed. This is also the platform from which you, the members, can mandate your executive committee to carry out tasks that you feel are important. Previous General Meetings have led to such outcomes as the creation of the second sabbatical position, our affiliation to Citizens UK and vending machines being put in the upstairs corridor. Votes passed at General Meetings really do lead to noticeable change throughout the College.

Student Ambassadors Employed primarily through the Marketing team, with the assistance of the Students’ Union, the Student Ambassadors work closely with both College and the Union to advertise Heythrop both internally, at events such as Open Days, and externally, through our presence at UCAS Fairs and Schools’ Liaison visits. The Student Ambassadors are our first line of promotion, giving firsthand accounts of life as a Heythrop student and providing an invaluable service as far as feedback from those looking at going into Higher Education is concerned. The Ambassadors are paid an hourly rate in line with the London Living Wage for their services and have all expenses covered while on College business.

Programme Reps If you are having an issue with your course, problems finding learning resources, or even just an issue you’re not comfortable discussing with your lecturer then your first port of call will be your Programme Rep. One student from each programme in

5

YOUR VOICE each year of study will be selected to represent your course by the Students’ Union, it is their role to work closely with the Academic Affairs Officer, as well as programme convenors and senior staff responsible for quality of learning and teaching on feeding back complaints and appraisals of their course. Two reps from each department (Philosophy, Theology, and Pastoral) will be selected to sit on their departmental board and all reps will be invited to the Student-Staff Liaison Committee, the main forum for direct student feedback to the College.

The SU Surgery If you have an issue that you’d like to discuss with a certain member of the Executive Committee they will of course answer emails and meet with you if your query requires such lovely people but there are certain times during the week when you can be certain to find those Officers in the HSU Office. These times, known as office hours, are the times when Officers can hold their surgeries and have an open door policy for any queries you may have. Of course the Sabbatical Officers should be in the Office most of the time and for the others, once we have timetables, will make their hours available on the website,.

The Executive Committee If you really feel that you could make a difference during your time at Heythrop and have a real passion for getting things done then the HSU Executive Committee might interest you. Comprising of eleven officers ranging in duties from organising events to running fundraisers, and providing welfare provision, The Executive do the day-to-day work that allows the Union to function as a body. The President and Vice President roles are both fully paid sabbatical roles and so obviously have far more work involved, including sitting on all boards in College from library committee to governing body. To get involved, look out for the opening of nominations in March.

6

THE EXECUTIVE ASHLEY DOOLAN Sabbatical President Hi there. My name’s Ashley (Doolan to most people) and I have the pleasure of serving as your President this year. I’ve just completed my three years here at Heythrop studying BA Philosophy and have a particular interest in the Philosophy of Religion. Instead of cutting my losses and running like some of my other (possibly smarter) peers I decided to stay around for another year. I’m from the Midlands originally (yes that’s Midlands i.e. Middle Lands not “the North”) and served as Student Activities Officer on last year’s union. It will be my job this year to represent you guys both within college, on a London wide scale and at a national level through the NUS. I look forward to meeting you all and hope you are pleased with how I’ve done by the end of this year.

ALEX HACKETT Sabbatical Vice-President Hi, I’m Alex Hackett, I’ve just graduated from a BA Philosophy degree and I’m the HSU’s first sabbatical Vice President. I’m in charge of marketing the union, developing it’s facilities and generally making sure you get the most out of your time here at the College. After two years working at the Lion as it’s co-creator and editor, I look forward to using some of the skills I’ve accumulated to help make your time at Heythrop truly awesome. When I’m not working (this does occasionally happen) I’ll most likely be catching up on a bit of Doctor Who, aimlessly flicking around YouTube or playing pool in the Lounge embarrassingly badly.

PETER O’NEIL Academic Affairs Officer Hello, I’m Peter and I’m the Academic Affairs Officer for this year. I’m here to ensure that the academic well-being of students is being upheld, this means I’ll be around to help with any academic concerns. I’ll also be keeping in touch with the programme representatives and other students, making sure any university feedback is brought up on the relevant committees. Remember that the union is separate from the college, and here to make sure you have the best experience possible, so do keep in touch and get involved. A little about myself, I study the BA in Philosophy here at the college, as well as running the Philosophy Society, my hobbies include music, drinking and Philosophy, with my main area of interest being Scholastic metaphysics. I do hope you enjoy your time at the college, and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

7

THE EXECUTIVE KATIE WHITELEY-MAGUIRE Campaigns Officer Hi! I’m a second year Philosophy(BA) student, and during my time at Heythrop so far, I’ve set up the VVSoc, helped out during RAG week, and now I’m Campaigns Officer for the coming year. Basically, my job is to make sure that we as a union get involved with charities you, the students, feel are important. I also inform you about all the NUS and ULU campaigns, and make it as easy as possible for you to get involved in them. You’ll probably get to know me best when it comes to throwing wet sponges at me in the name of charity, but you’ll see me around asking you to sign petitions and get involved in fundraisers, too. If there’s anything you want to help out with, set up, or find out more about, just ask me. Have a great first year, and I’ll see you around the college soon!

MATT HOLLAND Events and Entertainments Officer Hi I’m Matt Holland (I’m 19) and in my 2nd year studying Philosophy & Theology. I’m one half of your Events and Entertainments team along with Caitlin. I’m from Maidstone, Kent but I’m sure about 95% of you won’t care about that. In my Hustings speech I said I wanted to help make this year one of the best years Heythrop has seen in terms of events. This year we’re hoping to expand beyond the enjoyment of the Winter and Summer balls, so keep an eye out for ‘Heythrop Goes’ and ‘H.G. Nights’ which we’ll be starting this year. I’ll also be running the Football Team this year so anyone interested in playing or with a passion for football, please feel free to talk to me. Woo, don’t I sound interesting. No? Fair enough.

CAITLIN HICKEY Events and Entertainments Officer Hello! I’m Caitlin. I’m nineteen and just going into the second year of my philosophy degree. For the next year, I’m going to be one half of your Events Team, which means that along with Matt, I will be organising fresher’s week, the winter and Summer ball, Halloween, and other regular trips or nights out throughout the year. I am to make these regular and affordable for everyone. We are hoping to make connections with other small universities this year so that you can take advantage of their facilities, as well as our own. If anyone has any suggestions or feedback, the events team would love to hear it and help you out if we can, that includes helping societies or individuals run events. I look forward to meeting you all in September!

8

THE EXECUTIVE KATE TINGLE Female Welfare Officer Hello! My name is Kate and I’ll be one half of your Welfare Team this year. I’m a second year Study of Religions student and I’m from Plymouth in Devon. It’s my job to look after your wellbeing and to be there for you if you have any concerns or worries over the year. Whether you’re feeling homesick, worried about your academic life or feeling under the weather, I’m here as your friendly female welfare officer to help you as much as I can or at least point you in the direction of the best person to aid you. I’ll be around at all the Freshers’ events but if you’d like to ask any questions before you arrive, you can contact me (by mobile – on the back of the Fresher’s guide – or on Facebook). Looking forward to meeting you in September!

ANDY COGHILL Male Welfare Officer I’m Andy Coghill, a second year PRE and I will be the Male Welfare Officer this year. This role basically does exactly what it says on the tin- my job is to ensure that the men are not having any problems or issues, and to try and resolve them if they are. Along with Kate, the female welfare officer, we will take care of the welfare of all students, so if you have any issues or concerns, be it with health related issues, homesickness or something you’re not happy about within the college, give me a call and I’ll help you out as best I can. Aside from my union duties, I am a keen footballer and a dedicated Celtic FC supporter, and am also known for my ability to solve a Rubik’s cube in under 15 seconds.

CHARLIE YARWOOD Publicity Officer I’m Charlie Yarwood, I’m in my second year and I’m studying PRE. This year I’m going to be the Publicity Officer, which means it’s my job to keep you informed of all union activities, events and our progress in campaigns inside and outside of College as best I can, so expect there to be posters and such in The Lion as well as across Facebook, Twitter and Youtube! When I’m not in the office, I spend a lot of time writing, taking photographs or just in the pub with some of my friends.

9

THE EXECUTIVE MILES SMITH Website Development Officer Hey, my name is Miles and I study Philosophy, Religion & Ethics. I am this year’s Web Development Officer. I am in charge of maintaining & improving upon the internet presence of the union, providing the best possible online experience for students as well as endeavouring to help Students get the most out of the College’s electronic resources. Apart from my obvious love of philosophy & computers I also enjoy watching football, playing video games & of course hanging out with my friends who are the most important people in my life. I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to work with such an amazing team of people within the Students Union & look forward to meeting & supporting the amazing students of Heythrop College, new and old.

PETER MACKAY Student Activities Officer Hi everyone, my name’s Peter Mackay and I’m your Student Activities Officer for the year. I am currently in my second year studying Philosophy, Religion and Ethics. Broadly speaking I support all sports and societies and try to make them a success. ULU University of London Union Heythrop’s membership of the University of London means that all Heythrop students automatically belong to ULU, a.k.a. the University of London Union. This means that you have full access to the facilities at the superbly equipped ULU building in Bloomsbury. ULU can be found on Malet Street, a stone’s throw away from Goodge Street tube station and close to most of the intercollegiate halls of residence. You will have an opportunity to visit ULU with members of the HSU executive committee, or if you’d prefer to go on your own or with a friend to get a feel for the place, then go ahead! The on-site facilities at Malet Street include the ever-popular Library Bar and Gallery bars, an extensive University of London shop, a café, a student travel agency and even an optician! There is also a well-stocked gym and swimming pool with top-of-the range equipment. Although the latter facility is not automatically available to students it is one of the cheapest gyms in central London, with six months membership currently costing only £125. ULU’s famous venue, imaginatively called ‘The Venue’, also hosts regular big names and holds concerts catering to a wide variety of musical genres. The two bars offer a variety of diversions, with an excellent lunch menu and weekly theme nights in the Library Bar, and a more relaxed atmosphere in the Gallery. On top of all that, ULU also plays host to dozens of societies and teams, all of which are available to Heythrop students. ULU also runs the intercollegiate sports leagues and maintains the ‘small coverage teams’ which draw on those colleges (like Heythrop) that are too dainty to field whole teams on their own. So whether your interest is karate or karaoke, fencing or flamenco, Buddhism or break-dancing, drop by ULU and see what’s going on!

National Union of Students

NUS

The HSU is a member of the NUS (National Union of Students), a voluntary membership organisation that makes a real difference to the lives of students and its member students’ unions. They are a confederation of 600 students’ unions, amounting to more than 95% of all higher and further educations unions in the UK. Through their member students’ unions (like the HSU), they represent the interests of more than seven million students. Their mission is to promote, defend and extend the rights of students and to develop and champion strong students’ unions. The NUS aims to be a pioneering, innovative and powerful campaigning organisation: the national voice of students. They plan to fight barriers to education, empower students to shape both a quality learning experience and the world around them, supporting influential, democratic and well-resourced unions.

However, unless you’re really interested in national student politics, or want to launch a national campaign, the main benefit NUS affiliation brings you is entitlement to an NUS Extra card. This is universal proof of student status in the UK, and will get you discounts from loads of shops and with loads of companies, from Orange to Odeon and from Lloyds tsb to McDonalds. These cost £12, £4.70 of which comes straight back to the HSU to be spent on services and facilities to improve your university experience.

The role of the Fresher Parents is to act as a guide during the events of Freshers’ Week. They’re there to make sure you get to the locations of the events (and - to the best of their ability - home afterwards). This means making sure nobody gets lost in London, looking out for someone who has a bit too much to drink and most importantly, making sure everyone is socialising! You can also go to your Fresher Parents with any concerns you may have during the events. Among the Fresher Parents team will be the members of the Heythrop Students Union, and they will be accompanied by the Welfare Team, Kate Tingle and Andy Coghill.

Starting your own society is an easy process here at Heythrop – take a look at the steps below! • Establish what your society is for and what it will do. • Download the societies application form from Helios or the HSU website. • Complete this form, including the sections on your constitution and a budget request. • Get at least ten supporting signatures as proof that there is interest in your society. • Return the form and the petition to the Union Office (in the basement). Once you’ve done all that, we’ll sign off on the new society and sort out a budget. The next step for you is to simply start doing society-related activities! You can book certain rooms to use in Heythrop, and it doesn’t cost a thing. There’s no excuse, get involved!

BEFORE YOU GO Heythrop College has been described as “an oasis of calm in the big city”, and that is exactly the atmosphere we aim to create here. London is one of the biggest, busiest and most famous cities in the world, making it a phenomenal place to live and learn in. But this can also be a daunting experience at first to those of you who are new to central London. Fortunately the welfare team, the union executive and your fresher parents are here to help. If you haven’t done so already, try to come down and have a look around London, especially Kensington (and your halls if you are living in intercollegiate or private halls). It’s a fantastic area and there’s always lots to do!

TFL (tfl.gov.uk)

Transport for London is the travel authority here and we would advise that you have a quick look at their website to familiarise yourself with the tube maps and routes. (Don’t worry, we won’t test you on your first day, and we’ll be on hand to help you figure it out if needs be)!

READING THE READING LIST

Yes, it is that bit of university everyone always forgets – but the academic work is why you’re here, and while it may not be the most fun way to spend a summer afternoon, easing yourself into your studies is a lot easier than turning up unprepared. Make sure you’ve read the titles you want to read before Freshers’ Week, and then you can concentrate on making new friends.

CITY SAFETY Like any big city London can be a dangerous and scary place sometimes. But if you’re careful, that shouldn’t need to be a worry for you! If you’re going out, especially at night, make sure to tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back. Never travel alone at night; it’s not smart, it’s not safe and it could end badly. Keep an eye on your belongings. Nothing ruins your night quite like losing your stuff, or worse – having it stolen. Don’t leave your belongings unattended. If you put a bag down make sure it’s between your feet or somewhere you can see it. Another thing that you should keep an eye on is your drink – girls and boys! Make sure you never leave your drink unattended and don’t accept opened drinks from strangers. We’re always here if you have any questions, and in emergencies call 999. The best advice we can give you is that if you’re ever worried, don’t stick around to find out if your concerns were right. Leave!

DIRECTIONS

Heythrop College is a 3 minute walk away from High Street Kensington tube station. High Street Kensington station is in Zone 1 on the Circle and District lines. To those of you unfamiliar with the tube map High Street Kensington is on the yellow (Circle) and green (District) lines left of centre . Earl’s Court station and Gloucester Road station are both within walking distance of the College but if you are coming with luggage it is strongly recommended that you travel to High Street Kensington station. Many buses stop on High Street Kensington which is also an ideal way to travel but not the greatest method of travel for luggage. To easily transport your luggage to Heythrop College it is best to drive down, there is limited parking on site. Once you have reached High Street Kensington find Derry Street (however you cannot drive down this route) or Young Street. Kensington Square is a one way street. To access parking for the College you must use the back entrance which is found on South End off of Ansdell Street. Clearer directions should be given to you closer to Freshers’ Week.
