INTRODUCTION Since 1970, American Augers has been a devoted manufacturer of trenchless technology equipment. In 2013, American Augers added the Trencor line of mechanical drive trenchers to its product portfolio. Trencor provides its equipment with worldwide technical support, parts and service. Trencor encourages customers to contact the factory with any operational or assistance needs.

Specifications are subject to change without notice or obligation. Trencor will continue to update its product manuals with current operational information, but some units may be retrofitted independently by the customer or by the manufacturer per a customer request at the factory, or while in service, and the information herein may not reflect those changes.

Warranty Policy

AMERICAN AUGERS WARRANTY POLICY FORMͲ177 14January2015

NOTICE: This warranty policy applies to initial purchasers of American Augers, Inc. products (“Buyer”). This warranty policy includes American Augers, Inc. (“AA”) new and manufacturerͲcertified equipment, products, parts, materials and supplies branded American Augers and Trencor (“Equipment”).

In no event shall the liability of AA exceed the purchase price of the Equipment sold to the Buyer. AA reserves the right to fully satisfy its warranty obligation by refunding to the Buyer the full purchase price of the Equipment upon the return of the Equipment by the Buyer, transportation prepaid, to American Augers.

THE REMEDIES IN THIS WARRANTY SHALL BE THE EXCLUSIVE AND SOLE REMEDIES OF THE BUYER. THERE ARE NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING BUT WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY WARRANTY THAT THE EQUIPMENT IS OF MERCHANTABLE QUALITY OR THAT THE EQUIPMENT IS FIT FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE. AA WILL HAVE NO MONETARY LIABILITY WHATSOEVER FOR ANY DAMAGE, LOSS COSTS, OR EXPENSE (WHETHER GENERAL, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL) SUFFERED BY THE BUYER AS A RESULT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE EQUIPMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL AA BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, FREIGHT CHARGES, TRANSPORTATION CHARGES, DOWNTIME OR OTHER PARTS INCIDENTAL TO THE REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED UNDER THIS WARRANTY.

WHO IS COVERED? I.

Any Buyer who takes delivery of Equipment from AA is covered under this warranty. The warranty may be transferable with inspection and written approval of AA.

II.

Used equipment manufactured by AA is sold without conditions or warranties, expressed or implied, and is considered “as is”, unless there is a clear agreement with the Buyer in writing to the contrary prior to the purchase. BUYER AGREES TO INSPECT ALL USED EQUIPMENT BEFORE THE PURCHASE IS COMPLETED AND TO ACCEPT SAME WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

WHAT IS COVERED? I.

This warranty is extended by AA in respect to Equipment sold by AA. AA warrants to the Buyer that Equipment will be free of defects in material and workmanship, as defined in this warranty, for a period of 2 years from date of shipment to the Buyer or 2000 hours of operation, whichever occurs first. At the time of startup as a retail sale, rental, or lease a properly completed Warranty Registration Certificate must be submitted to AA to validate the warranty coverage. In the event that there is a delay or postponement in the commissioning of the Equipment by more than 60 days from the date of receipt of the Equipment, the warranty terms and conditions may not apply. An inspection performed by a representative of AA may be required to reinstate the warranty of the Buyer.

Details of the Warranty Coverage

II.

Coverage is based on year(s) or engine hours, whichever occurs first.

PARTS: 2 YEARS / 2,000 HOURS LABOR: 1 YEAR / 1,000 HOURS ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION: 2 YEARS / 2,000 HOURS RACK AND PINION: 5 YEARS / 10,000 HOURS

a. Components and all engines as installed on all Equipment are covered, but only:

i. In accordance with the warranty offered by the manufacturer of the component or engine; ii. For the periods set forth in the warranty offered by the manufacturer of the component or engine; iii. When the component or engine is used in a normal and proper manner which was intended in the product’s design; iv. When the component or engine is used in accordance with the maintenance schedules recommended by AA and/or the manufacturer of the component or engine.

b. Upon the expiration of the periods stated in the warranty offered by the manufacturer of the component or engine; all warranties, expressed or implied, are terminated. AA in no way creates any additional warranties, either expressed or implied, with respect to any component or engine provided by the manufacturer. The ultimate determination of whether a warranty exists lies in the sole discretion of the manufacturer of such component or engine and not with AA.

c. If a defect in workmanship or material is determined by AA or any manufacturer of the component or engine during the appropriate warranty period as stated in the limited warranty and in the warranty offered by the manufacturer of components or engines, AA will provide:

i. New, manufactured or AA approved parts or components to correct the defect; ii. Lubricating oil, filters, antifreeze and other service items deemed necessary by AA to the repair or replacement to correct the defect; iii. AA will perform repairs and/or replace parts at an authorized service center or location approved by AA.

AA is not responsible for any repair, replacement or failure of Equipment caused by:

a) The installation of any component, engine, part, supplies, or materials (whether original or not) which is deemed by AA, in its sole discretion, to be inconsistent with the Equipment’s design or improper installation; b) The attachment or installation of accessory items and parts not sold by, authorized by, or recommended by AA; c) Abuse, neglect, or improper repair to Equipment. d) The failure to conduct any maintenance required or recommended by AA or by the manufacturer of any component, engine, part, supplies, or materials.

AA is not responsible for any repair or replacement which is delayed in any way including:

a) Delay by Buyer in notifying AA of the defect. b) Delay in making the Equipment available to AA after Buyer learns of the defect. c) Delay in the return to AA of a defective component.

NOTE: Any component, Equipment or engine returned by the Buyer must be returned to AA no later than 30 calendar days from the date of failure of such component, equipment or engine. Failure on behalf of the Buyer to comply with this requirement can cause a voiding of warranty coverage. AA reserves the right to send a service representative, contract an authorized representative, or request that the Equipment is returned to the factory for product inspections. Any return of parts or equipment must have prior approval of a representative of American Augers and/or a Return Material Authorization number.

III AA is not responsible for:

a) The cost of transporting the Equipment, component or engine; b) Premium or overtime labor; c) Local taxes for repairs or replacements, labor, components, engines, materials or Equipment; d) Evaluating the suspected defect if no defect is found by AA to exist or to be covered by a warranty offered by the manufacturer of any component or engine; e) Labor or parts required that are incidental to the removal or remounting of components, engines, or equipment repaired or replaced. f) If tests are conducted to ascertain or demonstrate defects in material or workmanship, such tests shall be conducted after reasonable notice to AA and upon conditions mutually agreed upon in advance of the test.

AA shall have the right to be present at any testing conducted by Buyer. AA at its option may charge the Buyer for any tests performed by AA at the request of the Buyer in respect to the merchandise sold hereunder.

IV AA is not responsible for the repair or replacement of consumables and wear items, including but not limited to the following:

a) Down hole tools and accessories, pockets, teeth, conveyor belts, boom, wear plates, hardware and fasteners, any ground engaging or wear components, digging chains, digging plates, sprockets, segments, truck wheel components, arc plates, rock guards, and crumbshoe components, batteries, lamp bulbs, fuses, various types of gaskets and packing, filter elements, oils, lubricants, fluids, track chain, track drive sprockets, drill pipe, auger sections, die holders, wrench wear parts, guide bushings, shaft seals, mud swivel assemblies, spindles, valves, piston liners, centrifugal pumps, shaker screens, cones, belts, buckets, bearings, cam followers, die inserts, die holders, brakes, rollers, drilling bits, auger boring heads, adapters, couplers, crossover subs, backreamer and pullback swivels, and other normal wearing or aging parts.

V OTHER LIMITATIONS: THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ANY OTHER WARRANTY, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. No representative, employee, or agent of AA has the authority to make or imply any representation, promise or agreement which in any way alters, amends, modifies or waives the terms of this warranty unless such representation is made in writing and signed by an officer of AA. AA reserves the right to modify, alter, and improve any Equipment without incurring any obligation to replace any Equipment previously sold with such modified, altered or improved Equipment. Any parts replaced under the terms of this warranty become the property of American Augers and upon written request, must be returned, transportation prepaid, to American Augers.

VI COMPENSATION: This warranty does not provide any compensation to Buyer or any other person or entity for loss of time, loss of use of Equipment, loss of profits, inconvenience, loss of productions, delay in construction, delay in project completion, labor costs (except as specifically stated elsewhere in this warranty), loss of life or limb, personal injury or property damage, or any other type of incidental or consequential damages. ALL DAMAGES ARE LIMITED TO REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS DESCRIBED IN THIS WARRANTY. However, in some states this exclusion or limitation will not apply, so reference should be made to the appropriate and applicable state laws. In such jurisdictions, the parties stipulate and agree that damages are liquidated and limited to the cost of repair and replacement necessary to cure any defect.

VII THIS WARRANTY ACCOMPANIES A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PRODUCT

Please read and make certain that you understand all safety warnings, operation, and maintenance requirements.

a) AA is not responsible for any damage or injury to person or property caused by the use of this Equipment:

I. In a manner which is inconsistent with the Equipment’s intended design, purpose, or use; II. After the removal or alteration of the safety features of this Equipment or neglect of safety warnings and precautions; III. If the Buyer or any person fails to perform any maintenance as required or recommended by AA or the manufacturer of any component, engine, or Equipment which contributes to the cause of any damage or injury; IV. By an untrained, unskilled, or impaired operator.

WHAT MUST THE BUYER DO?

Buyer’s Covenants and Responsibilities

COST TO BUYER: If it is not a defect in workmanship or material as determined by AA or its authorized dealer to exist during the warranty period, and if any repair or replacement is undertaken by AA, Buyer shall, in consideration for this limited warranty, be responsible for the following:

a) Any costs of transporting the Equipment, a component or engine, (except as specifically stated elsewhere in this warranty); b) Any premium or overtime labor costs; c) Any local taxes for repairs or replacements for labor, components, engines and Equipment; d) Any cost to evaluate the suspected defect if no defect is found by AA to exist or to be covered by a warranty; e) Any labor or parts required incidental to the removal or remounting of components or engines repaired or replaced; and, f) The invoice amount on any invoice issued with the shipment of Equipment, components or engines which were returned later than30 days from the date of failure of such Equipment, component or engine.

MAINTENANCE: Buyer shall be responsible for the performance and cost of all maintenance to the Equipment, components, and engines as directed by AA and/or the manufacturer of any component or engine. This warranty applies only if the alleged defective Equipment has been properly maintained and operated as specified by AA. This warranty will not apply if the alleged defect is attributable to an unauthorized modification or service repair made, a component part installed, improper Equipment storage, neglect or abuse of the Equipment on the behalf of the Buyer or its representatives, improper Equipment operation or use of the Equipment exceeding the design limitations or an attachment supplied by other than AA, its subsidiaries or the authorized representative of the foregoing.

TRAINING AND SAFE OPERATION: WARRANTY IS PROVIDED WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT ALL SAFETY WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE REVIEWED BY ALL PERSONNEL. THE BUYER SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING APPROPRIATE TRAINING FOR OPERATORS OF ANY AA EQUIPMENT, AT BUYER’S SOLE COST. BUYER SHALL ENSURE THAT OPERATORS ARE AT ALL TIMES QUALIFIED TO OPERATE ANY AA EQUIPMENT AND THAT OPERATORS DO NOT SUFFER FROM ANY IMPAIRMENT WHICH WOULD PRECLUDE SAFE OPERATION OF

THE AA EQUIPMENT. IN THE EVENT THAT THE BUYER NEEDS ADDITIONAL TRAINING OF OPERATORS, THEY SHALL IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO SCHEDULE AND PAY FOR THE REQUIRED TRAINING.

NOTIFICATION: Buyer agrees to notify AA promptly of any suspected defect and to cooperate fully in AA’s evaluation to determine whether any defect exists as per the warranty terms and conditions.

WAIVER: BUYER WAIVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FOR ANY INJURY, LOSS, DAMAGE OR CLAIM OF ANY KIND RESULTING OR ARISING FROM ANY DEFECT ONCE BUYER ACCEPTS THE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT NECESSARY TO CURE SUCH DEFECT.

Safety Awareness Program Understanding Operation Safety This manual is part of the safety system of the equipment. Use it when training personnel who will operate the machine or work on the jobsite. Ensure that a copy is always available with the machine and that the operators have read it, understand it, and have access to it. Carefully follow the instructions, advice and procedures it contains. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

To The Owner To The Owner Thank you for your purchase of the Trencor T16 Trencher. This chain trencher is intended to be used for cutting into soil or loose rock to create a trench with a consistent, single pass at a controlled grade.

This manual contains important information that will help you and your crew set up and safely operate the T16. DO NOT operate or permit anyone to operate or service this machine until you have read this Manual. Use only trained operators who have demonstrated the ability to operate and service this machine correctly and safely.

Make sure this Manual is complete and in good condition. Contact the Trencor factory to obtain additional manuals and for further information about or assistance with your machine. Your Trencor factory has approved service parts and technicians with special training that know the best methods of repair and maintenance for your machine.

DO NOT use this machine for any application or purpose other than those described in this Manual. Consult the Trencor factory for changes, additions, or modifications that may be required for this machine to comply with various regional safety requirements. Do not make unauthorized modifications. Scope of Document This manual covers operation, safety and maintenance of the T16. Topics such as trenching requirements, soil assessment and spoil disposal are outside the scope of this manual. If you have questions about selecting the appropriate digging attachment for your job, contact the Trencor factory.

Our machines can be customized to specific customer requirements. Therefore, your machine may not appear nor be equipped exactly like the machines shown in drawings or photographs in this manual.

Overview Purpose of Machine The machine was designed solely for the purpose of creating a trench with a consistent, single pass at a controlled grade.

Soil Conditions The machine is designed to work on solid ground that can support the load without settling. See “Safe Slope Operation” on page 67.

Ambient Conditions Temperature limits: The machine, with factory fill of lubricants, is designed to work in temperatures from +5°F to +110°F (-15°C to +43°C). For temperatures not included in this range, contact Trencor. Refer to “Operating in Different Climates” on page 75 for additional information.

Relative humidity: 100% Maximum altitude: 6500 feet (2000 m) above sea level Atmospheric conditions should allow adequate visibility within the operating area.

The machine should not be operated when lightning is likely.

Warranty: General Conditions Warranty is provided with the understanding that all safety warnings and instructions will be reviewed by all personnel. Warranty is subject to the conditions and limitations specified in the Warranty Policy located on page 3. Limitations of Warranty The warranty for all components that are not manufactured by Trencor are subject to the original warranties of their manufacturers and not by Trencor.

Safety Safety Regulations and Practices This manual contains important information about the safety practices and safe operation of the T16. All operators must read and understand the Operation and Safety Instruction Manual before starting the machine. Careful adherence to the safety and operating instructions in this manual will help ensure a safe and productive jobsite.

The safety information in this Manual does not replace safety codes, insurance needs, national, provincial, state and local laws. Ensure that your machine has the correct equipment required by the local laws and regulations. It is the responsibility of each person working with this equipment to learn and follow all applicable local, state, provincial and national safety regulations.

Fast Stop Procedures FAST STOP/DELAYED SHUTDOWN: Push the red Engine Stop button in one of the following locations: • on the Control Panel in the Operator’s Enclosure.

• on the left side of the machine, at ground level near the Operator’s Enclosure • on the right side of the machine at ground level near the hydraulic tank All workers should know the location of the Engine Stop buttons before starting the machine on the jobsite.

Response to Electrical Strike If the trencher makes contact with a power line it will become electrically charged.

• If you are on the machine, stay on it.

• Remain calm.

• Reverse the direction of the buckets or raise the boom in an attempt to break contact with the electrical line.

• If you are not on the machine, do not touch any part of the machine as it may be highly charged.

• Notify public safety authorities to secure the area.

• Notify the electric utility company immediately.

• When the proper utility authorities verify that the power has been disconnected and the work area is safe, you may get off the machine.

Other workers in the immediate area of the machine should not move. The voltage difference between the equipment and the ground, or between a person’s feet may be sufficient to cause injury or death. Do not touch the machine or anything connected to it as these items may be highly charged.

Safety Information Response to a Gas Strike If a gas line strike occurs, evacuate the area immediately. Turn off all engines. Remove any ignition sources. Do not smoke or do anything that could cause a spark. Do not attempt to break contact by reversing the chain or lifting the boom as further movement may cause a spark. Contact emergency services and the gas utility company immediately.

Response to a Fiber Optic Strike If a fiber-optic strike occurs, stop digging immediately. Do not look into the cut ends of the cable. This can cause severe eye damage. Notify the utility owner.

Response to a Communications Line Strike If a communications line strike occurs, stop digging immediately and notify the utility company.

Response to a Sanitary/Storm Sewer and Water Strike If a water or sewer line strike occurs, stop digging immediately. Warn all bystanders that a strike has occurred and that they should stay away. Obtain medical attention for personnel who have come into contact with sewage. Notify the utility owner immediately.

Qualification of Personnel Improper operation can result in serious injury, death and damage to the equipment. Personnel should read and understand the manual and obtain appropriate training based on their duties. Owner must ensure that all personnel receive instructions about safety. Owner must review all warnings on machine with all personnel.

• Only skilled and authorized personnel should be permitted to transport, operate and maintain the machine.

• Training is available by contacting the Trencor factory.

Safety Information Basic Safety Guidelines If personal protective equipment is not used, serious injury or death of personnel can occur. The operator and all other personnel on the jobsite should use proper protective equipment according to their duties.

1. Before using the T16, all operators should receive thorough training in the use of this equipment. This manual should be used as a training tool.

2. A copy of this manual should remain with the machine and be accessible to all personnel at all times.

3. Personnel on the jobsite should receive training on safety practices, procedures, safety signs and hazards. Operators, support personnel, repair technicians, and visitors should be aware of their responsibilities and any restrictions to their activities.

4. All new or inexperienced employees should receive a complete orientation to the jobsite and thorough training in their job duties. Never allow inexperienced personnel to operate or work near the machine unless they are carefully supervised.

5. The meaning of the hazard alert signs on the equipment is explained in “Safety Alerts” section beginning on page 37.

In the United States, workplace safety is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA regulations are found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 29. Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, OSHA Standard 1926, is relevant to operating the T16. Information can be obtained from your Regional U.S. Department of Labor Office. In other countries, the operator is responsible for determining which national, provincial, state and local laws govern operations at the jobsite.

7. Use required or recommended protective equipment which meets applicable standards when operating this machine: • Hard hats • Safety glasses, goggles, or face shields • Work boots • Work gloves • Highly visible reflective clothing • Hearing protection • Breathing protection • Boots and gloves having electrical insulation

Safety Information • Any additional safety equipment mandated by other rules or required by the Owner or regulatory agency 8. If a hazardous situation is suspected, stop work until appropriate corrective action is taken.

9. Use hand signals required for specific jobs. Know who has the responsibility for signaling.

10. Post the location and phone number of the nearest aid station or hospital. Have a fire extinguisher and complete first aid kit on site. Have at least one of your workers trained in first aid.

Utility Locations Electric shock and explosion hazard. Have all utility lines marked before you begin to dig. Notify One Call (by calling 811) as well as utility companies that do not subscribe to the One Call system. Personnel are at risk of serious injury or death if an electric line is struck during drilling.

• The One-Call system (dial 811 (US only) or 1-888-258-0808 (US and Canada only)) is in place to facilitate identifying appropriate local utility contacts.

• It is the operator's responsibility to follow applicable laws and regulations which govern locating and avoiding existing utilities.

Before beginning any project, have local utility companies mark the location of utility lines buried in the area. Design the project to maintain acceptable clearances between underground utilities and structures and the trench.

The One-Call system (dial 811 (US only) or 1-888-258-0808 (US and Canada only)) is in place to facilitate identifying appropriate local utility contacts. Additionally, the Pipeline Association for Public Awareness website has several references for excavators at http://www.pipelineawareness.org/excavators. Their “Excavation Safety Guide” describes best practices and contains a guide to state contacts and regulations.

It is the operator's responsibility to follow applicable laws and regulations which govern locating and avoiding existing utilities.

The location of all identified utilities must be verified using non-destructive methods of excavation. Carefully dig a hole by hand and/or automatic vacuum equipment to the utility line to verify its location and depth.

Surface Examination The job site and the surface along and around the path of the planned trench should be evaluated for indications of possible above-ground and underground hazards. Transformer boxes, manholes, outbuildings and sheds, gas grills, outdoor lighting, ditch line depressions and signs of recent road or utility repairs may indicate the presence of additional buried utility lines. Confirm the depth of water and gas shutoff valves.

Assume all wires attached to poles are live. Be aware that private utilities and utilities that do not subscribe to the one-call system are not marked by One-Call operators. Examine soil conditions and determine what will be done with the spoil (excavated soil).

Safety Information Overhead Hazards Overhead lines must be avoided. Overhead lines are of particular concern during mobilization/demobilization, loading and unloading heavy equipment. If the voltage is unknown, always maintain at least 20 feet (6 m) of separation between equipment and power lines. If the voltage is known, OSHA regulations outline the required minimum separation in the United States. If necessary, place highly visible markers on either side of the overhead hazard or designate an individual to notify equipment operators as they approach.

Before Starting the Machine • Complete all servicing prescribed in this Manual, the diesel engine manual and manuals for any other machine components.

• Check that all hydraulic fittings, bolts, and nuts are tight.

• Remove all loose objects stored in or on the machine and in the operator’s enclosure. Loose objects can jam controls.

• Ensure all protective guards, doors, etc. are in place.

• Ensure all safety devices are in place and in working order.

• Know the location of all personnel on the jobsite.

• Do not wear loose fitting clothing, loose or uncovered long hair, jewelry and loose personal articles.

• Foreign material or grease on the steps and handrails can cause an accident. Keep steps and handrails clean.

• Turn off the machine and take proper bonding and grounding precautions when refueling (see “Refueling Safety” on page 34).

Operating Precautions • Make sure the parking brake is engaged and all machine controls are in the neutral before starting the engine.

• Always fasten the seat belt before starting the engine.

• Do not start the machine until all personnel are away from rotating or moving parts.

• Check the operation of all machine controls in a clear area before using the machine.

• Do not let other persons ride on the machine or in the operator’s enclosure.

• Face the machine and use the grab handles and steps when getting on and getting off the machine.

Do not rush. Do not jump from the machine.

Operator’s Responsibilities • It is the responsibility of the operator to read, understand and follow the Operator’s Manual and other information provided and use the correct operating procedure. Machines should be operated only by qualified operators and trained helpers.

• Ensure that all underground utilities have been located before the project starts.

• Assess the situation using common sense and the benefit of experience and proceed if and only if the work can be safety performed.

• Understand and obey all applicable national, provincial, state, and local codes and regulations.

• Point out each of the safety signs on the machine and ensure that the crew understand them.

• Make sure all operating personnel observe and use safe operating practices.

• Visually verify all personnel and objects are clear of the machine before startup.

Safety Information • Ensure that all personnel and objects stay away from rotating or moving parts.

• Walk around the work area prior to starting. Check for hazardous areas such as ditches, overhangs and inclines. Ensure that traffic and terrain will permit safe operation.

• Always wear the operator presence switch when operating the machine.

• Never leave the operator’s station while the engine is running. Remain seated at the control console with the seat belt fastened while the engine is running.

• Do not operate the machine while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Do not operate the machine while distracted. Be alert for any hazards.

• Turn off the machine at the first sign of malfunction or hazardous condition.

• Ensure all safety devices are in place and in working order.

Material Handling Precautions • Use appropriate lifting equipment for the size of the load.

• Discard and replace damaged or worn lifting equipment (e.g., slings, chains, ropes, etc.)

• Use a tether line to stabilize the load and minimize twisting and turning.

• Stand away from suspended loads. Do not approach the load until it has been lowered to hand-height.

• Use proper hand signals and know who has the responsibility for signaling.

Trenching Precautions • Maintain safe clearances as specified by local regulatory authorities between the trench and all utilities.

• Stay away from the trencher boom at all times.

• Always use a crumber assembly or guard on the trencher. Keep it in place and adjusted to protect against accidental contact with the digging assembly.

• Do not operate the trencher when personnel are working near the boom.

• If your view of the work area is not clear, always have a signal person direct your movement. Know and understand each signal before taking any action.

• Never allow anyone in the trench.

• Never allow anyone to stand at the edge of the trench. Trench cave-in could cause a person to fall into the digging attachment while it is in motion.

• Follow all government and local regulations regarding shoring or sloping trench walls.

• Support or lower all attachments to the ground before leaving the machine.

• Turn off power to the digging attachment before moving the trencher with the attachment raised.

• Use extreme caution when operating on rough terrain (hillsides, near ditches, gullies, holes and other obstructions) where rollover could occur.

Maintenance Precautions • Park machine on a level surface, block tracks to prevent accidental movement. Support or lower all attachments to the ground before servicing the machine.

• Eliminate all power sources (turn off machine, remove key) and relieve system pressures before doing maintenance.

• Allow the machine to cool before servicing. Hydraulic components, engine, radiator and exhaust systems can get hot enough to cause serious injury.

Safety Information • Use proper lockout and tagout procedures when doing maintenance.

• Follow manufacturer’s recommended maintenance procedures.

• Allow only properly trained personnel to perform maintenance activities.

• Do not modify the machine in any way.

• Repair or replace damaged or missing protective guards, doors, etc.

• Replace all missing, illegible, or damaged safety signs. Keep all safety signs clean.

• Use a piece of cardboard or wood to check for pressurized leaks to prevent fluid penetrating the skin.

• Relieve pressure in the hydraulic system before disconnecting hoses or working on the hydraulic system. Slowly open the filler cap and vent the pressurized hydraulic oil reservoir. When loosening fittings in hoses where residual pressure may exist, slowly loosen the fitting until the oil begins to leak. Wait for the leaking to stop before disconnecting the fitting completely.

• Seek medical attention immediately if hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure has penetrated the skin.

Even if the injury seems minor, prompt medical treatment by a physician familiar with this injury is essential. This is a serious condition which can cause serious injury and possibly death.

• Do not allow anyone to work under or around the elevated cab without inserting the safety pin in the guide rail.

Transporting Precautions • Know the rules, laws and safety equipment necessary for transporting or driving this machine on a road or highway. Rotating beacon, backup alarm, SMV and other safety equipment items are available from Trencor parts department.

• Weight of the machine will damage concrete.

• Do not make sharp turns while on pavement. Track pads will peel up the asphalt. Use plates when crossing a road.

• Inspect all tractor trailers being used to transport the machine, including but not limited to checking the brakes, tires, tire pressure and lights.

• Remove or properly secure loose items so they cannot fall off during transport.

Crystalline Silica (Quartz) Dust Precautions Inhalation hazard. Jobsite hazards could cause death or serious injury. Use correct equipment and work methods. Use and maintain proper safety equipment. To help avoid injury: • Use water spray or other means to control dust when cutting, drilling, or working materials such as concrete, sand, or rock containing quartz. The dust may contain silica.

• Workers exposed to dust must wear appropriate breathing protection, Silica dust may cause lung disease and is known to the State of California to cause cancer.

Follow OSHA or other guidelines for exposure to crystalline silica when trenching, sawing or drilling through material that might produce dust containing crystalline silica (quartz).

Safety Information Rollover Protection In the Operator’s Enclosure, you are protected by the ROPS system (Roll Over Protective Structure). The seat belt is an important part of the ROPS system. If the machine rolls over and you DO NOT have the seat belt fastened, you can be crushed by the ROPS or the machine. Always fasten the seat belt before you operate the machine.

• Make sure the belt end and buckle are securely fastened.

The protection offered by the Rollover Protective System (ROPS) will be impaired if it has been subjected to any modification, structural damage, or has been involved in an overturn accident. The ROPS must be replaced after a roll-over.

Refueling Safety Explosion hazard. Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel poses a static ignition hazard. Death or serious injury from fire or explosion could result.

Ensure your fuel delivery system is properly bonded and grounded.

Diesel fuel with low sulfur content (ULSD) has an increased ability to store static charge. Static dissipating additives added to fuel by refiners may lose their effectiveness over time. Static charges can build up while the fuel is flowing. Static discharge when combustible vapors are present could cause explosion or fire.

There are several steps you can take to minimize the hazards this condition presents.

• Properly bond all components of your fuel delivery system (fuel supply tank, transfer pump and hose, nozzle, et al.).

• Equalize the static electric potential by connecting a wire from the fuel delivery system to the machine chassis.

• Ensure the fuel delivery system has an electrically conductive connection from the tank to earth ground.

• Consult your fuel or fuel system supplier to ensure the delivery system is in compliance with proper grounding and bonding practices.1

Safety Information Noise Level Safety Exposure to high noise levels may cause hearing loss. Wear appropriate hearing protection.

Welding Safety Workers can encounter hot surfaces, fire, noxious fumes and other hazards when welding.

These practices can help increase safety when welding: • Follow established welding safety practices and regulations • Assign another worker to “fire watch” • Wear appropriate protective equipment (face shield, fire resistant clothing, etc.)

• Ensure adequate ventilation • Have a first aid kit nearby • If welding in a confined space, follow all confined space regulations and procedures

Hazardous Chemicals Improper use and handling of chemicals can cause illness or injury and may damage the equipment. Follow instructions on Material Safety Data sheets and packaging when working with chemicals.

• Wear proper protective equipment such as eye protection, hand protection and a respirator when working with hazardous materials.

Explosion hazard. Flammable solvents could ignite if placed near fire, sparks or other ignition sources. Keep flammable materials in closed containers and away from fire, sparks and ignition sources.

Safety Information IMPORTANT: • Do not use containers that can leak.

• Do not drain fluids on the ground or dump them into sewage systems, streams, rivers, lakes or the sea.

• Always follow laws and regulations for proper disposal of waste materials.

Danger Zones -- Safe Distances Electrocution Hazard. Personnel are at risk of serious injury or death if an electric line is struck during trenching. If trenching within 10 feet of an electric line, all personnel must wear appropriate protective equipment (electrical insulating boots and gloves) on the job site.

A danger zone is any zone inside or near the machine where health, safety and security risks exist. All personnel on the jobsite should be advised of these zones, the hazards they may encounter and the safety precautions which are required or recommended.

Hazardous Area: All areas from which a person could touch parts of the machine when it is operating or when maintenance is being performed. On electrical jobsites, wear appropriate protective equipment.

Electrically Charged Safe Distance: 10 feet (3 m) from the trench. Personnel in this zone during trenching operations are at risk in the event an electric line is struck. On electrical jobsites, wear appropriate protective equipment (insulated boots and gloves). All other personnel must stay out of this zone during trenching or any time when an electric line could be struck.

Safety Features - Fire Extinguisher A dry chemical fire extinguisher approved for Class B & C type fires should always be on your machine.

Controls Safety Switches Do not attempt to bypass the operator presence switch. Never operate the machine with the operator presence switch disabled. Operating the machine with the switch disabled can result in injury or death.

The T16 is equipped with three types of safety switches.

• Operator Presence Switch (in operator’s cab) • Engine Stop Buttons (2 ground-level and 1 in operator’s cab) The operator presence switch is a flexible cord attached to a toggle switch located in the operator’s control area (see photo below). The operator attaches the opposite end of the cord to a belt loop. If the operator leaves the control area, the cord pulls a switch that stops the engine and disengages the transmission (i.e., transmission in neutral). To restart the engine, • Reset the operator presence switch by setting the toggle switch to the right.

• Attach the cable to the operator.

• Follow the engine starting procedures (page 63) or information in your diesel engine manual.

Machine Controls There are two ground-level red Engine Stop push buttons (one on each side of the machine) and one red Engine Stop push button located on the control panel. These Engine Stop buttons send a signal to the engine control unit and result in immediate engine shut down. Some movement or rotation may occur due to residual hydraulic pressure or stored energy.

Machine Controls Conveyor Raise and Lower Switch The Conveyor Raise and Lower Switch is located on the winch, as shown below. The winch raises and lowers the conveyor. The winch can be operated with the engine off.

Battery Switch NOTICE: • DO NOT disconnect the batteries while the engine is running.

• DO NOT try to stop the engine with this switch. You can damage the electrical system.

The battery switch is located inside the engine compartment as shown on page 21. The switch connects and disconnects the batteries from the electrical system.

• Rotate the switch to the right to connect.

• Rotate left to disconnect.

• The battery switch must be in the ON position before starting the engine.

• Before turning the battery switch OFF, the engine must be turned off.

• When performing maintenance, install a padlock through the tab and follow proper lockout-tagout procedures.

3. Left/Right Hand Track Controller Joysticks

These controllers activate the left/right hand track pump so that each track can steer independently.

• Increase speed of left or right track: push joystick away from you • Decrease speed of left or right track: pull joystick towards you NOTE: The Parking Brake must be off before using these controls. The controls will not activate if the Parking Brake is on.

4. Steering Correction Enable Switch

When steering correction is on, the steering correction knob adjusts track speeds to control the direction of the machine's movement.

• Enable steering correction: toggle switch up • Disable steering correction: toggle switch down

5. Steering Correction Dial

Use this knob to fine-tune the track drive controllers to make slight steering adjustments so that the trencher moves in a straight line.

6. Load Controller Enable Switch

• Activate load control: toggle switch up

7. Load Setting Dial

The load controller is inversely related to the percentage of engine load. When the engine percent load increases above the set point, the load controller will decrease power output to the tracks.

Operations Classify Jobsite Inspect Jobsite • Follow U.S. Department of Labor regulations on excavating and trenching (Part 1926, Subpart P) and other similar regulations.

• Contact your local One-Call (811 in USA) or the One-Call referral number (888-258-0808 in USA and Canada) to have underground utilities located before digging. Also contact any utilities that do not participate in the One-Call service. See “Utility Locations” on page 30.

• Inspect jobsite and perimeter for evidence of underground hazards, such as: • “buried utility” notices • utility facilities without overhead lines • gas or water meters • junction boxes • drop boxes • light poles • manhole covers • sunken ground • Have an experienced locating equipment operator sweep area within 20’ (6 m) to each side of the trench path. Verify previously marked line and cable locations.

• Mark location of all buried utilities and obstructions.

• Classify jobsite.

Electrocution Hazard. Personnel are at risk of serious injury or death if an electric line is struck during trenching. If trenching within 10 feet of an electric line, all personnel must wear appropriate protective equipment (electrical insulating boots and gloves) on the job site.

Use one or both of these methods.

• Expose line by careful hand digging or soft excavation.

• Have service shut down while work is in progress. Have electric company test lines before returning them to service.

Natural Gas Jobsite Precautions

Fire or explosion possible. Fumes could ignite and cause burns. No smoking, no flame, no spark.

Explosion possible. Serious injury or equipment damage could occur.

Follow directions carefully.

Use one or both of these methods.

Preparation Crystalline Silica (Quartz) Dust Precautions

Inhalation hazard. Jobsite hazards could cause death or serious injury. Use correct equipment and work methods. Use and maintain proper safety equipment. To help avoid injury: • Use water spray or other means to control dust when cutting, drilling, or working materials such as concrete, sand, or rock containing quartz. The dust may contain silica.

• Workers exposed to dust must wear appropriate breathing protection, Silica dust may cause lung disease and is known to the State of California to cause cancer.

Follow OSHA or other guidelines for exposure to crystalline silica when trenching, sawing or drilling through material that might produce dust containing crystalline silica (quartz).

Other Jobsite Precautions You may need to use different methods to safely avoid other underground hazards. Talk with those knowledgeable about hazards present at each site to determine which precautions should be taken or if job should be attempted.

Setup Undercarriage Installation Crush hazard from above. If the load shifts or falls it could crush you or kill you. Use appropriate lifting equipment for the size of the load.

• Ensure the load is stable and properly secured before removing mounting nuts and bolts.

• Do not walk under the boom or chain guard after the mounting bolts or nuts have been removed.

1. Using appropriate lifting equipment, lift the tractor to provide space for the tracks to be installed. Use appropriate shoring devices to support the weight of the tractor.

2. Attach appropriate lifting equipment to one of the tracks using the lifting points shown below. For the weight of the track, refer to “Weights of Trencher Options and Components” on page 132.

3. In a controlled manner, slide the track under the tractor.

4. Secure the track with bolts.

5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 to install the track on the other side of the machine.

Setup Counterweight Installation If the machine is equipped with a counterweight option, then the weight plates might be shipped separately. To install the weight plates, 1. Remove the counterweight box cover.

2. Attach appropriate lifting equipment and lifting eye to the first plate. For the weight of the plate, refer to “Weights of Trencher Options and Components” on page 132.

3. In a controlled manner, lower the weight plate over the centering rod. Secure the weight plate with a bolt placed at the bottom of the counterweight box.

4. Attach appropriate lifting equipment and lifting eye to the second plate.

5. In a controlled manner, lower the weight plate over the centering rod. Secure the weight plate with a bolt to the previous weight plate.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5, as needed, to install additional weight plates (up to six weight plates per side).

7. Secure the counterweight box cover with bolts.

8. If the handrail is not installed, then install the handrails and secure with bolts.

9. Repeat steps 1 - 8 for the counterweight on the other side of the machine.

Setup Stabilizer Installation If a stabilizer option was shipped separately, then the stabilizers will need to be installed.

1. Attach appropriate lifting equipment to the lifting points shown below. For the weight of the stabilizer, refer to “Weights of Trencher Options and Components” on page 132.

2. In a controlled manner, lift the stabilizer and slide it into the stabilizer mount on the mainframe.

3. Align the mounting pin holes.

4. Install the mounting pins and fasten securely. If the pin does not slide in, then the stabilizer alignment should be adjusted.

5. Secure the pin on the stabilizer cylinder.

6. Repeat steps 1 - 5 for the stabilizer on the other side of the machine.

Setup Conveyor Installation If a conveyor option was shipped separately, then the conveyor will need to be installed.

Install the center frame of the conveyor 1. Using appropriate lifting equipment, lift the center frame and move it above the conveyor opening on the tractor. Refer to “Weights of Trencher Options and Components” on page 132.

2. Slide the center frame into the opening until it reaches the conveyor sprocket.

3. Use the conveyor controls to pull the center frame so that it is centered in the conveyor opening Install the conveyor extension 1. Using appropriate lifting equipment, lift the conveyor extension. Refer to “Weights of Trencher Options and Components” on page 132.

2. Position the extension over the conveyor opening and lower the extension until the mounting holes are aligned with the center frame.

3. Insert securing pins or bolts.

4. Lower the extension to the operational position. It should form an arc from the center frame.

5. Repeat for the other conveyor extension.

7. Use the lacing kit to pull the ends of the conveyor belt together.

8. Insert the hinge pin while threading it through the fastener loops.

9. Secure the lacing by crimping the locking washer at each end of the hinge pin.

10. Adjust the tension of the belts. See “Adjusting the Conveyor Belt Tension” on page 112.

Falls from heights can cause serious injury and death. Use required fall protection equipment when working at heights above grade.

• When working at heights above 4-6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) other precautions may be necessary.

• Follow established safety practices and regulations when working at heights above 4-6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 m).

1. Retract the boom lift cylinders until the boom hood is level.

2. Attach a suitable lifting device to the chain guard at the lift points shown below. Refer to “Weights of Trencher Options and Components” on page 132.

3. Lift and move it into place.

4. Align the mounting bolt holes.

5. Install the mounting bolts and fasten securely.

Setup Primary Boom and Digging Chain Installation

Ensure that all personnel are away from the machine when moving the trencher during digging chain installation. Serious injury or death could result.

Install Primary Boom

1. Using an appropriate lifting device, lift the tailwheel assembly and position it inside the tailwheel clamps on the tailwheel section.

2. Attach the outer half of the tailwheel clamp to the boom end section. Torque bolts to 300-380 ft./lbs.

3. Place the boom sub-assembly, with the tailwheel assembly attached, behind the trencher. The curved side of the boom should be against the ground. The tailwheel should be farthest from the trencher.

4. Attach the lifting device so that when the boom is lifted, the boom mounting box tilts up at a slight angle toward the trencher boom hood.

5. Using the boom hoist cylinders, elevate the boom hood until the boom guides inside the boom hood are aligned with the boom mounting box.

6. Apply a generous coating of multi-purpose grease to the boom guides on the inside of the boom hood and the guide rails on the boom mounting box.

7. Slowly insert the end of the boom into the boom hood. Push on the tailwheel end of the boom subassembly with appropriate equipment. As the boom is being inserted, the boom hood may need to be raised or lowered slightly to maintain proper alignment with the boom.

8. Be sure the chain adjusting cylinder are fully collapsed. then push the boom subassembly into the boom hood until the adjusting cylinders contact the push plate.

9. Install the mounting bolts and hardened washers through the slots in the boom hood. Do not tighten.

10. Unfold the digging chain and cutter plate assembly behind the machine with the cutter plates down and the tool holders toward the machine.

11. Back the machine over the chain assembly until approximately 10 feet (3.05 m) of the chain is resting behind the tailwheel centerline.

12. Using an appropriate lifting device, pick up the free end of the chain assembly and wrap it around the tailwheel along the top of the boom sub-assembly. Pull enough chain along the top of the boom to engage the drive sprockets.

Setup 13. Attach a long tow chain to the free end of the chain assembly. Attach the opposite end of the tow chain to appropriate equipment.

14. With the drive sprockets rotating slowly in reverse, move the digging chain assembly forward slowly.

Continue until the free end of the digging chain is 3-4 ft (0.9-1.2 m) past the center of the tailwheel. Stop the digger drive sprocket.

15. Attach an appropriate lifting device to the free end of the digging chain and wrap around the tailwheel.

Slowly lower the boom until it is resting on the ground.

16. Disconnect the lifting device from the chain assembly.

17. Using a lift chain or tow strap and a chain puller, tighten the digging chain until the links and bushings are aligned.

18. When the chain links are aligned, start the master pin into the round hole in the chain side plate. Use a pin press to drive the master pin through the chain link.

19. Bolt on cutter bars over the master link section of the chain.

Operating the T16 Starting the Machine 1. Unplug the block heater, if the engine is so equipped and the heater is connected.

2. Disconnect all battery chargers, if they are being used.

3. Ensure that all maintenance items have been performed following the schedule (see scheduled maintenance beginning on page 87) as well as all items in the manuals for other machine components and accessories.

4. Check the engine oil level, air cleaner, coolant level, batteries and diesel fuel level. DO NOT let the fuel tank run dry. With the key switch in the ON position, check the fuel gauge to see the amount of fuel in the tank. Follow refueling safety procedures on page 34.

5. Open the fuel supply valves at the fuel tank outlets on both fuel tanks (photo below). Prime the fuel system if necessary.

6. Ensure the area around the machine is clear.

Crushing Hazard. Serious injury or death could result. Ensure that all personnel are away from the machine when raising or lowering the conveyor.

7. Ensure the conveyor is fully down in the operating position. See “Conveyor Raise and Lower Switch” on page 43.

8. Ensure the ground-level engine stop buttons are pulled out.

9. Turn the Battery Switch to the On position. For information on the location and use of the Battery Switch, see page 43.

10. Face the machine and use hand rails to enter or exit the operator’s enclosure. DO NOT use control levers as grab handles.

11. Attach the operator presence switch. The engine will not start if the operator presence switch has not been properly reset (see “Operator Presence Switch” on page 41).

12. Adjust the position of the seat and fasten the seat belt.

• Pull out the Engine Stop Button (1).

• Center the left-hand track control lever (2).

• Center the right-hand track control lever (3).

• Move the track drive traction controller to the minimum position (4).

• Shift the digging drive transmission into neutral (5).

• Engage the parking brake (6).

14. Turn the ignition key to the Start position. The horn will sound for 6 seconds to signal workers on the jobsite that the engine is being started.

15. Release the key when the engine starts.

16. If the engine fails to start in 10 seconds, wait for 10 seconds and crank the engine again.

17. If the engine fails to start after 30 seconds of cranking, stop and allow the engine starter motor to cool for two minutes before repeating the starting procedures.

NOTICE: • If the batteries are dead, then the batteries should be charged. Do not jump start the engine.

A manufacturer’s manual for the diesel engine is supplied with the T16. The instructions above cover general engine starting procedures. Consult the manufacturer’s manual for detailed starting and stopping procedures, engine maintenance and repair instructions.

Operating the T16 Test the Indicators and Warm The Engine Signal lights and operator displays warn of potential operating problems. If ignored, damage to the machine could result. In case of unusual noise, abnormal pressure values, or if signal lights appear or alarm sounds, stop the engine immediately and carry out necessary repairs.

Ensure that all personnel are away from the machine when operating the hydraulic controls. Serious injury or death could result.

1. Check the oil pressure gauge immediately after starting the engine. Engine oil pressure should rise into the operating range of 10-50 psi (69-345 kPa) almost immediately. If the oil pressure does not register on the gauge within five seconds, turn off the engine, investigate and make necessary repairs.

2. Check the engine voltmeter to insure that the alternator is functioning properly. The voltmeter should register in the operation range of 24-28 vdc.

3. Move the throttle control to the low idle position and run the engine until it comes to operating temperature. This may take several minutes.

4. When the engine is at normal temperature, the machine is ready to operate.

Operating the T16 Relocating the Machine Be aware of electrical power lines, other overhead obstructions and personnel in the area when moving the machine. The machine can become electrically charged if contact is made with electrical power lines.

Other serious injury, damage to property or to the machine can occur. Ensure there is adequate clearance for the boom, the cab and other elevated attachments.

NOTICE: • Stop the machine before changing the Trench/Transport setting on the operator’s console. Do not change this setting while the machine is in motion.

• Make turns very slowly. Tight turns will cause severe damage to all but the hardest surfaces. Avoid tight turns on paved (asphalt) roads and in soft dirt.

1. Raise the digging attachment using the Boom joystick.

2. Shift the Trench/Transport switch to the appropriate speed depending on the nature of machine movement. Do not change this setting while the machine is in motion.

• Trench (Low)- use this speed for digging, loading or unloading and moving the trencher slowly around the digging site and moving the trencher in tight spaces.

• Transport (High) - use this speed to move the trencher quickly from one location to another. Speed is approximately 2 mph (3.5 k/h).

3. Release the parking brake.

4. Turn off the Load Controller. This permits uninterrupted track speed.

5. The left hand and right hand track speed and direction are independently controlled.

• To move the trencher in a straight line, position the left and right hand track controllers in the same position. Move the left and right track controllers in an approximately three-quarter forward or reverse position. To start the trencher moving, slowly increase the Traction Controller until the desired speed is reached.

• To turn the trencher, slowly decrease the setting of either the Left or Right Hand Track Control lever.

• To stop travel, center both Track Drive Control levers and/or bring the Traction Controller to the minimum position.

Operating the T16 Safe Slope Operation Tipover possible. Machine can tip over and crush you.

To help avoid injury: • Always operate with heavy end uphill.

• Drive cautiously at all times.

• Never jerk control levers. Use a steady even motion.

• Do not park unit on slope without lowering digging attachment to the ground, returning all controls to neutral position, shutting down unit, and set parking brake.

Operating safely on a slope depends upon many factors including: • Distribution of machine weight, including front loading and absence of load • Height of load • Even or rough ground conditions • Potential for ground giving way causing unplanned tilt forward, reverse or sideways • Nearness of ditches, ruts, stumps or other obstructions and sudden changes in slope • Speed • Turning • Braking performance • Operator skill These varying conditions make it impractical to specify a maximum safe operating angle in this manual.

It is therefore important for the operator to be aware of these conditions and adjust operation accordingly.

Maximum engine angle and braking performance are two absolute limits which must never be exceeded.

These maximums are stated since they are design limits. These design limits usually exceed the operating limits and must never be used alone to establish safe operating angle for variable conditions.

Maximum engine lubrication angle - 28° Maximum park brake holding force – equal to traction of both tracks.

Operating the T16 Raising Operator’s Cab Exiting the operator’s cab when it is in the raised position can result in a fall and serious personal injury. Lower the operator’s cab before opening the door and leaving the cab.

If increased visibility to the digging area is needed, raise the cab using the toggle in the Options area of the control panel.

Before exiting the cab: 1. Lower the cab using the toggle on the control panel.

2. Turn off the engine.

3. To lower the cab when the engine is off, turn the control on the left side of the control panel counterclockwise.

Operations

Operating the T16 Begin Trenching Moving digging teeth can cause amputation or death. Stay away.

Never drop a boom with a rapidly moving digging chain on the ground. The force may cause the machine to move suddenly and unexpectedly. Serious personal injury could result. Have the chain moving slowly and lower the boom carefully when starting a new cut.

Never try to make more than minor adjustments to the steering while trenching. Making sharp turns while the boom is in the trench will cause serious damage to the trencher and could cause serious personal injury.

IMPORTANT: • Use caution when digging on a slope. The natural vibration of the trencher will make the unit creep sideways downhill. Try to dig with the trencher in a level position.

1. Move the machine to the starting point.

2. Lower the boom so it is close to the ground.

3. Select the desired digging gear (first gear is advised).

4. Start the conveyor using the Conveyor Controller. Shift the conveyor to the left or right side of the machine as desired.

5. Raise the RPM to the maximum.

6. Slowly lower the boom into the ground without stalling the engine. If the chain stalls, lift the boom slightly up until the chain turns again.

7. When you reach the desired depth, start moving the machine slowly forward using the left and right Track Controllers and the Traction Controller.

Operating the T16 Stopping the Trencher

Trench walls may be unstable. Trench walls could collapse if equipment and personnel move near the trench edge. Damage to equipment or personal injury could result. Keep all equipment and personnel away from the trench at all times.

1. Move the trencher and park it on level, solid ground.

2. Move the Traction Controller to the minimum position. Move both the Track Drive Controllers to the center position.

3. Shift the transmission to the neutral position.

4. Set the parking brake.

5. Run the conveyors to remove any spoils. After all spoils are removed, stop the conveyor.

6. Reduce engine speed to low idle.

7. Lower the boom to the ground. Safely block up the boom if repairs or service is needed.

IMPORTANT: The boom joystick should be used to raise and lower the primary boom. If the boom joystick is not operational, then the boom should be appropriately shored to support it while the machine is repaired. Do not attempt raise or lower the boom manually.

8. Allow the engine to idle three to five minutes to cool off the turbocharger.

9. Turn off the engine by turning the ignition switch to the STOP position. Do not use the Engine Stop button to turn off the engine.

10. If leaving the machine unattended, remove the key and lock the cab door and engine compartment doors. You may also wish to close the fuel supply valves at the fuel tank outlets.

Restarting a Stalled Engine IMPORTANT: If the engine water temperature was above the normal operating range or the engine oil pressure fell below the normal operating range prior to the engine stall, do not restart the engine until the reason for the high water temperature or low oil pressure is found and repaired.

If the engine stalls while at full throttle or when hot: 1. Shift all controls to neutral or minimum positions.

2. Apply parking brake.

3. Put the digging drive transmission in neutral.

4. Turn the engine starter switch to the right until the engine restarts.

Operating the T16 Digging with the Load Control The load controller is a feature of the trencher control system that will slow down the tracks, if necessary, to prevent stalling of the digging chain and/or engine due to the trencher becoming overloaded. Using the load control feature will result in optimal performance of the trencher. When the load controller is set properly, there is a smooth transition in which very little change in either the engine speed, chain speed, or the ground speed of the trencher is noticeable.

With the On/Off switch in the OFF position, the load controller is deactivated and the operator must control the ground speed with the track drive control levers, traction control lever, and the track derate knob.

With the load controller deactivated, the trencher can easily become overloaded, therefore, careful attention by the operator must be used to prevent stalling or performance problems.

In the ON position, the ground speed may be reduced to prevent non-optimal engine performance and/or stall conditions.

The Load Setting control knob allows the operator to select between the minimum and maximum settings. It adjusts the amount of load on the machine before the tracks are slowed down.

There are two methods of load control, Transmission Speed and Engine Speed. This setting is adjusted on the touchscreen display, under the settings page. The Transmission Speed load control method is the recommend setting and provides stable, consistent loading in a variety of digging conditions. This method controls the actual digging chain speed by slowing the tracks down, if necessary. The Engine Speed load control method operates by measuring the engine speed drop and slowing the tracks down, if necessary.

This is the Trencor legacy load control method.

Boom Load Control can be activated on the touchscreen display, under the settings page. This setting will always default to off when the trencher is turned off. With the Boom Load Control setting on, load control will be utilized while lowering the boom in to the ground. This allows the operator to keep the boom joystick at maximum down while the load control feature controls the dig in rate.

Operating the T16 Moving a Disabled Machine Personal injury or death can result when you tow a disabled machine incorrectly. Read the following recommendations.

If your machine is disabled, do not move the machine if it cannot be moved without further damage. If possible, repair the machine at the job site.

The trencher can be towed a short distance for service or repair without operating the drive tracks.

Release the brakes and bypass the pumps following these instructions:

Adapter To BR on Manifold

1. To release the brakes, disconnect the hose listed as “To BR on Manifold” on the Plumbing Diagram Closed Loop from the Adapter.

2. Attach the hose to a Port-a-Power capable of producing 400-750 psi. When the set up is complete and the Port-a Power is running, both brakes will be released.

Operating the T16 3. The pumps (one for each planetary) are designed with a bypass function. Locate the bypass hex on the each multifunction valve.

4. Mechanically rotate the bypass hex three turns counterclockwise. This connects working loop A and B and allows fluid to circulate without rotating the pump and drive tracks. There are two multifunction valves on each track pump. All four multifunction valves need to be opened before towing the machine.

5. The trencher can be towed to the repair site. Move the machine a very short distance at a very slow speed.

When repairs are complete: 1. Disconnect the Port-a-Power.

2. Reconnect the hose back to the manifold. The brakes will be restored once the engine is running.

3. Mechanically rotate the bypass hex on the multifunction valves three turns clockwise. This allows the pumps to return to normal operation.

Operating in Different Climates Operating in Hot Weather Normal operating temperature for this machine is between 110°F (43°C) and 5°F (-15°C). To prevent damage to the machine when operating in hot weather, take the following precautions: • Follow instructions in the diesel engine manual for operating the engine in hot weather.

• Use the appropriate mixture of coolant and water for the temperature range in which you are working.

Test the coolant periodically. Keep the coolant at the correct level in the radiator and the reservoir.

• Test the radiator cap before hot weather starts. Replace if damaged.

• Use the recommended engine oil viscosity for the operating conditions as specified in your diesel engine manual.

• Clean dirt and debris from the radiator and engine daily. Check the air cleaner dust valve daily.

• Allow the engine to run near high idle when working the machine. Do not overload the engine.

Operating in Cold Weather Only machines especially configured at the factory can work under ambient temperatures between -40°F to +5°F (-40°C to -15°C). Materials (rubber, gaskets, oils, greases) must be selected so that effects from the cold are minimized and components do not age quickly. Some machines are equipped with an engine preheater which will ease starting the diesel engine in cold temperatures.

Use appropriate oils and cooling liquids for the diesel engine. For specific information, see your diesel engine manual.

Other precautions and special procedures for operating in cold weather are: • Ensure that the battery is fully charged. At colder temperatures, batteries have less starting power. If you add water to the batteries below 32°F (0°C), charge the batteries or run the engine for approximately 2 hours. This will prevent the battery from freezing.

• Use the recommended engine oil viscosity for the operating conditions as specified in your diesel engine manual.

• Use the proper cold weather fuel. Cold temperatures can cause water to collect in the fuel tank. Check the collection bowl at the bottom of the fuel-water separator near the fuel system on the engine. Drain water from the collection bowl using the drain valve at the bottom of the bowl.

• Use the appropriate mixture of coolant and water for the temperature range in which you are working.

Test the coolant periodically. Keep the coolant at the correct level in the radiator and the reservoir.

• Warm the engine thoroughly before beginning operations. Slowly operate each hydraulic control for about ten minutes. Move the machine very slowly.

Storage and Transportation

Machine Storage and Transport

Storage and Transportation Minimum Storage Space Required Consult “Specifications” on page 131 for the dimensions and weight of the T16 to establish storage space requirements. The surface must be firm enough to support the weight of the machine and prevent sinking.

Storage Site Conditions If the machine has been lubricated, it can be stored uncovered for up to 30 days. Protect the machines from salty or acid environments, solvents, gas, flammable liquids and explosives.

For periods longer that 30 days, the machines should be stored in a covered, dry area.

The temperature ranges recommended for storage are between 32°F to 120°F (0°C to 49°C). Refer to your diesel engine manual for temperatures outside this range.

Preparations for Storage For short-term storage, i.e. periods less than 30 days: 1. Clean the machine as described in “Cleaning” section beginning on page 82.

2. Eliminate sediment and water from the tanks (diesel fuel and oil).

3. Lubricate the entire machine. Coat all exposed hydraulic cylinders with oil to protect against corrosion’ For storing longer than 30 days, follow the procedures for short-term storage plus these additional steps: 1. Store the machine in a covered, dry location.

2. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for long-term storage of a diesel engine.

3. Remove and store the batteries where the temperature will remain between 32°F and 105° (0°C to 41°C).

4. Completely fill all gearboxes with lubricant.

5. Start the machine periodically (approximately every 30 days) and run the engine until it comes to operating temperature.

Storage and Transportation

T16 Operators Manual Machine Storage and Transport

Transportation Improper operation of controls and use of unsafe techniques can result in serious injury, death and damage to the equipment. Personnel should read the manual and learn proper procedures to transport and lift the machine.

The machine must be transported in accordance with national, state, provincial and local laws and regulations. All components must be properly secured on the trencher. If the machine exceeds the overall dimensions allowed, it must be flagged according to the highway laws of the countries or states involved in the transport. The transporter is responsible for using the proper method of transport and following all other applicable regulations.

The personnel guard, crumbshoe, boom and the right and left tracks can be removed and transported separately in order to comply with dimension and weight limits. Ensure all items are properly secured before transporting.

Lifting the Machine Crush hazard from above. If the load shifts or falls it could crush you or kill you. Use appropriate lifting equipment for the size of the load.

• Use chain or cable suitable for the weight of the machine being lifted.

• Ensure load is stable and properly secured before lifting.

• All personnel must remain a safe distance away while the machine is being lifted.

Maintenance

General Maintenance

Maintenance If personal protective equipment is not used, serious injury or death of personnel can occur. Always wear protective eye wear. During maintenance all personnel on the jobsite should use proper protective equipment according to their duties.

Failure to turn off the machine and lockout systems before doing maintenance work may result in personal injury or death. Turn off power, relieve system pressures, and turn the Battery switch to the OFF position. Remove key from the ignition switch and install a lock on the Battery switch (see drawing below). Use proper lockout and tagout procedures before working on the machine.

The battery switch is located inside the engine compartment as shown on page 23.

Hydraulic oil, gearbox oil, diesel engine oil, pin and bearing greases, diesel engine cooling liquid, battery liquids and fuel should be handled with care. Consult Material Safety Data Sheets. Dispose of spent fluids according to laws and regulations. Take appropriate precautions to ensure that these fluids do not leak or spill on the ground or into sewage systems, streams, rivers, lakes or the sea.

Engines, muffler, gearboxes and the hydraulic system can reach very high temperatures. Do not attempt maintenance immediately after stopping work. Wait until the parts are cool.

For additional drawings, diagrams and explanations necessary for maintenance and repair, contact the factory.

Maintenance

General Maintenance Qualification of the Technician Ensure that all field personnel conducting visual inspections of the machine have adequate training to enable them to identify problems and that they have read and understand this manual.

The maintenance technician must be trained in trencher operations. The maintenance technician is responsible for conducting maintenance with suitable test and repair equipment, personal protective equipment and attention to safety hazards.

Cleaning NOTICE: Water can damage sensitive electronic components. Do not spray water against electronic components and control panels.

General Cleaning Clean all the marking plates as well as all lighting devices. Do not use acid or abrasive solutions. Before pressure washing the T16, make sure all doors and access panels of the machine and operator’s cab are closed tightly and latched. Ensure all components on the machine have cooled down. Do not direct the water spray towards the following components: • Muffler • Air filter • Batteries • Electric components and control panels • Hydraulic filters, hydraulic vents or breathers • Cab air conditioning air intakes or vents • Caps and open tanks

Cleaning Plastic and Resin Parts Avoid using gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner and similar materials when cleaning the instrument cluster, gauges, console, plastic windows, etc. These materials will cause discoloration, cracking or deformation of the part being cleaned. Use ONLY water, mild soap and a soft cloth or compressed air (maximum 30 psi (2 bar)) when you clean these parts.

Cleaning Hydraulic Connections Hydraulic couplings and protective caps must be kept clean and free of all debris. Use an evaporative, petroleum-based aerosol cleaner. When hydraulic couplings are not connected, replace protective caps on the connectors and hose ends. General Maintenance Welding NOTICE: BEFORE WELDING • Turn off the engine • Disconnect both the positive and negative battery cables from the battery.

• Disconnect all electrical control unit connectors.

• Clamp the ground cable for the welder as close as possible (no more than 2 feet (0.61 meters)) to the part being welded.

• Do not connect the ground clamp of the welder to any of the sensors, wiring harnesses, electrical control units or the components.

• Do not attempt direct welding of any electrical components. Remove or protect electrical wiring and components from welding debris, splatter and heat.

• Do not weld near flammable liquids or the fuel, hydraulic and other tanks.

• Failure to follow welding procedure can cause damage to electric and mechanical components. Damage to components due to improper procedures is not covered under warranty.

Consult the factory for additional information about preheating or post weld heat treating requirements if welding is necessary in cooler temperatures. Welding should not be done when the ambient temperature is below 0°F.

Tier 4 Final Diesel Engines Your machine may be equipped with a Tier 4 Final diesel engine. These engines are designed to meet current regulations by minimizing gaseous and particulate (soot) emissions. Attachment 1: Diesel Engine Manual and other information from your engine manufacturer supersede the information below. Be aware of these and other requirements. Tier 4 engines: • Use ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) fuel. Note that the use of other fuels may damage the engine and may void the manufacturer’s warranty.

• Use API CJ-4 engine oil. This oil is specially formulated to reduce ash deposits.

IMPORTANT: This Tier 4 Final engine does not contain a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Therefore, no DPF regeneration is required.

Diesel Engine Maintenance Engine maintenance items are outside the scope of this manual. Consult your diesel engine manual for recommended engine fluids (gasoline, engine oil, antifreeze) and inspection and maintenance schedules.

Your engine may have specific requirements related to its emission systems.

General Maintenance Seal Installation Improper seal installation is a common reason for seal failure. Here are some guidelines for proper installation: • Remove burrs, nicks, or grooves from the shaft.

• Wipe the seal with lubricant before installing the seal.

• Install seal in housing using press-fit tools such as an arbor or hydraulic press. Both types of tools apply uniform pressure against a seal. If the press is not available, use a soft-faced mallet or bearing cup with the installation tool. Apply a seating force evenly around the circumference of the seal. Never hammer directly on the seal face.

• Installation tools should be of soft metal or suitable plastic. Do not use screw drivers or any other tools that might damage the edge of the seal.

• Protect the seal when forcing it over sharp edges, slots and undercuts.

• After installation, check for other machine parts that could rub against the seal and cause friction and heat.

Torque Specifications Consult “Appendix B: Torque Specifications” on page 129 for torque values if they are not provided in the maintenance procedure.

Maintaining Other Non-Trencor Components It is the customer’s responsibility to become familiar with and follow instructions in manuals for components and accessories not manufactured by Trencor. These components may have special inspection and maintenance schedules and specific procedures which must be followed to avoid damaging the equipment or voiding their warranties.

Filter replacement frequencies are a guideline. Follow filter change schedule unless filter indicator or gauge shows change is required more frequently. Filters also need to be changed more frequently when working in dusty conditions.

Tractor Maintenance Cycle Engine Stop Buttons and Operator Presence Switch Verify that the engine stop buttons and operator presence switch are working properly. Perform an operating check of all controls. Make necessary repairs before starting operations.

General Inspection Use of equipment with damaged hoses, fittings, loose or missing fasteners may result in damage to the machine, personal injury or death. Inspect the machine regularly. Replace or repair damaged or missing components promptly.

Hydraulic fluid under pressure can cause serious personal injury and death if it penetrates the skin. Stay away from the jet.

• Use a piece of cardboard or wood to check for pressurized leaks to prevent fluid penetrating the skin.

• Seek immediate medical attention if hydraulic fluid has penetrated the skin even if the injury seems minor. Prompt medical treatment by a physician familiar with this injury is essential.

Hot surfaces can cause burns. Do not touch until cool.

Inspect the machine for leaks of gear oil and hydraulic oil. Leaks should be repaired. Allowing oil or other fluids to leak into the environment is unlawful in most locations. Visually inspect all hoses, fittings and pipes.

Replace parts that are damaged.

Check that hydraulic cylinder rods and struts are not damaged and that they do not leak. Keep cylinder rods clean to prevent damage. Dirt can cause contamination of the hydraulic fluid and cause failure of shaft seals.

Check all major fasteners, such as hose clamps, stakedown, tie downs, etc. Tighten all loose fasteners.

Replace any that are missing or damaged. Check the control cable connections and ensure they are tight.

Tractor Maintenance Engine: Check Fuel Level Diesel fuel and fuel vapors are combustible. They ignite easily, burn rapidly and can cause serious personal injury. Turn off the engine when refueling. Never allow sparks, flames or smoking materials in the refueling area.

Explosion hazard. Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel poses a static ignition hazard. Death or serious injury from fire or explosion could result.

Ensure your fuel delivery system is properly bonded and grounded.

Begin each shift with a full tank of fuel. To prevent dirt and water from reaching the injection parts which will cause damage and decrease performance, use clean fuel and service the fuel filter at regular intervals as prescribed in your engine’s maintenance schedule.Refer to “Refueling Safety” on page 34 for guidance on minimizing static ignition hazard risk when refueling.

Engine: Check Engine Oil Level NOTICE: • Before checking or changing engine crankcase lube oil, wait for the engine to cool.

• Refer to your diesel engine manual for correct crankcase lube oil to use if more oil is required.

Check that the engine oil is at the maximum level and that there is no contamination. Add oil if level is low. Select oil based on specifications in your diesel engine manual.

Engine: Check Air Filter Service Indicator The engine air filter has two elements (inner and outer). The air filter service indicator provides a quick check of the condition of the inner air filter. When the red marker on the air filter service indicator appears, the inner air filter is clogged with dust. This causes a substantial decrease in engine efficiency and can cause serious damage to inner mechanical parts. To service the air filter: 1. Remove the housing cover.

2. Remove the outer filter element.

3. Remove the inner filter element and wipe out any dust that has collected on the inside of the housing.

4. Replace the inner element and reset the service indicator.

5. Clean or replace the outer element.

6. Replace the housing cover and secure the latches.

7. Reset the service indicator.

8. In extremely dusty conditions, increase the frequency of engine air filter maintenance.

Tractor Maintenance Engine: Check Coolant Level Hot coolant can spray out and cause serious injury. Do not remove radiator cap while the engine is hot. Wait for the engine to cool.

• Slowly open the radiator cap and allow pressure to escape slowly.

• Always wear face protection (face shield or goggles) when cleaning radiator fins with compressed air or pressure washer.

NOTICE: Water quality is important to the performance of the cooling system. Use distilled, deionized or demineralized water when mixing with coolant concentrate.

Coolant should be checked while the coolant is cold. Check that the level of the coolant is at maximum and there is no contamination. Add coolant if the level is low. After filling is complete, install and tighten the filler cap.

Washing External Heat Exchangers Follow the same procedures when cleaning the engine radiator or the oil cooler. Heat exchangers should be washed every 50 hours to remove dirt and dust film from the cooling fins. Clean the heat exchangers more often if you have been working in dusty condition. In addition, after the trencher is moved to a new location, the heat exchangers should be washed to remove road dust film.

Objects may fly into the eyes and cause serious injury. Always wear protective eye wear when washing heat exchangers.

• Spraying hot water on trencher parts can produce dangerous steam or cause damage to expensive trencher components. Allow the trencher engine to cool at least 30 minutes before washing heat exchanger components.

1. Remove the screens covering the heat exchangers or swing out hinged units to allow better cleaning of the cooling fins.

2. Begin spraying one heat exchanger, making sure that soapy water is coming out of the spray nozzle.

Keep the nozzle 12 to 18 inches (305 to 457 mm) from the face of the exchanger and spray directly into the heat exchanger. Water should go directly through to the other side. Move the sprayer back and forth across the face of the exchanger to cover the whole surface. This will assure maximum cleaning without damaging the cooling fins.

3. If the heat exchanger is severely plugged with dirt or bugs, move the spray nozzle about 6 inches (152 mm) away from the film in the area that is plugged. Spend more time washing the plugged areas.

4. When possible, spray the heat exchanger from both sides to get it as clean as possible.

5. After washing the heat exchanger enough so that the water coming out the opposite side is clean, spray clean water in the same manner as described above to remove the soap from the heat exchangers. Spray the dirt that came out of the exchanger off the surrounding trencher components and surfaces of the trencher.

6. Replace screens or hinged units after also spraying the screens clean.

7. Move to the next heat exchanger and repeat cleaning steps.

Tractor Maintenance Flushing Internal Heat Exchangers See manufacturer’s literature about the procedure for internal flushing of heat exchangers. This will be necessary only if the heat exchanger is severely plugged inside the cooling tubes. To avoid having to flush internal heat exchangers, keep fresh, clean engine coolant or hydraulic fluid in the system. Fewer contaminants in the fluid means less build-up on the heat exchanger cooling tubes.

Clean Cabin Pressurized Air Filter Clean the filter at least every 50 hours. If you have been working in dusty conditions, clean it more often.

Replace the filter at 500 hours. If you have been working in dusty conditions or the filter appears clogged and dirty, replace it more frequently.

Universal Joints Inspection To keep the tractor operating smoothly and economically the driveshaft must be carefully inspected at regular intervals. Universal joint (U-joint) failures, vibrations, and center bearing (shaft support bearings) failures are caused by such things as loose end yokes, excessive radial looseness, slip spline radial looseness, bent shaft tubing, or missing Welch plugs in the slip yoke.

1. Check the output and input end yokes on both transmission and axle, or axles, for looseness. If loose, disconnect driveshaft and re-torque end yoke retaining nut to specification. If yoke replacement is required, check for manufacturer’s recommendation regarding replacement frequency of end yoke retaining nut. Always torque nut to manufacturer’s specification.

2. If end yokes are tight, check for excessive radial looseness of the transmission output shaft and axle input and output shafts in their respective bearings. Consult transmission and axle manufacturer’s specifications for acceptable radial looseness limits and method of checking.

3. Check for excessive looseness across the ends of the joints. This looseness should not exceed 0.006 in.

(0.152 mm) maximum.

4. Check the slip spline for excessive radial movement. Radial looseness between the slip yoke and the tube shaft should not exceed 0.007 in. (0.178 mm) 5. Check the shaft for damaged, bent tubing or missing balance weights. Make certain foreign material, such as undercoat or concrete, has not built up on the shaft. If so, remove it.

Power Take-Off (PTO) PTO's come in various types and sizes that are necessary because of the many different functions that PTO's perform.

• The Side Mount PTO is attached to the side of the transmission. This is the most common PTO in use and may be available for mounting to a side of the transmission with either an SAE standard six or eight bolt opening.

• The Top Mount PTO is designed to operate from, and is attached to the top of the transmission. They are used in heavy-duty applications. Each unit is designed to function with a specific auxiliary.

For best results, consult the Owner’s Manual that pertains to your PTO. If you do not have the Owner’s Manual, the following general procedures may be helpful.

1. Drain the oil from the transmission and remove the PTO aperture cover plate.

2. Discard the cover plate and cover plate gasket.

3. Clean the aperture pad using a putty knife or wire brush. NOTE: Stuff a rag in the opening to prevent dirt or other contaminants from entering the transmission while you are cleaning the pad.

4. Using your hand, rock the PTO driver gear in the transmission, and the driven gear in the PTO assembly.

Rocking the gears shows you the amount of backlash that has been designed into each. This is helpful in establishing the proper backlash when installing the PTO. 5. Install the proper studs in the PTO aperture using a stud driver. Where the holes are tapped through the transmission case, use a sealant to prevent leaks. NOTE: Avoid contact of the sealant with automatic transmission fluid in automatics. Always check to be sure that the studs do not interfere with the transmission gears.

6. Tighten the studs securely and torque to 45-50 ft-lbs (61-67 N-m) for an eight bolt, and 30-35 ft-lbs (4147 N-m) for a six bolt unit.

7. Place the correct number of gaskets over the studs. Do not use sealant right away between gaskets because you may want to add or subtract gaskets to obtain the proper backlash. When mounting any PTO, use gaskets between all mounting surfaces, but do not stack more than four gaskets together. For a transmission with a standard mounting depth, usually only one .020” gasket will be required. At least one gasket must always be used on either side of the filler blocks, adapter assemblies, or adapter plates.

More gaskets may be required in order to establish the proper backlash.

8. Secure the PTO to the transmission. Copper gaskets are used as a guard against leaks under a capscrew head. NOTE: If the holes in the aperture are not drilled through, discard the copper gaskets and replace them with lock washers. Fasten the PTO to the transmission, torque 6-bolts to 30-35 ft-lbs (41-47 N-m) and 8-bolts to 45-50 ft-lbs (61-67 N-m). Check for proper backlash.

9. After assembly, refill transmission with oil and briefly operate the PTO and check for noises resulting from incorrect mounting as well as the proper positioning of the sliding gear.

• If you hear a whining sound, add gaskets to provide more gear clearance.

• If you hear a clattering sound, remove one or more gaskets to provide a tighter fit.

This pre-testing is important as many PTO failures are due to faulty installation. If there is any doubt about the installation, always refer back to the Owner's Manual. Remember that the use of a PTO requires the addition of from one to two quarts of oil to the transmission, depending upon the size of the PTO. Anticipate a slight increase in PTO noise level as the oil thins out at operating temperature.

10. After the PTO has been in operation for a period of time, check the torque of the mounting bolts and the general operation of the unit. Look for leaks or other problems. Correct them before serious damage occurs to either, or both, the transmission and the PTO.

Tractor Maintenance Engine: Check Battery and Battery Fluid Levels BATTERY ACID CAN CAUSE SEVERE BURNS. Batteries contain sulfuric acid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Wear eye protection and gloves when working with batteries.

ANTIDOTE: • EXTERNAL: flush with water.

• INTERNAL: drink large quantities of water or milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg or vegetable oil. Call Poison control and a physician immediately.

• EYES: flush with water for 15 minutes and get prompt medical attention.

All exposed metal parts on a storage battery are “live”. Laying a metal object across the terminals may cause a spark, short circuit or explosion. Personal injury or damage to the equipment may result. Never lay a metal object across the battery terminals.

NOTICE: • When disconnecting battery terminals, remove the Negative (-) GROUND cable first; then remove the Positive (+). When connecting the cables, connect the Positive (+) first, then connect the Negative (-) GROUND cable last.

• To prevent damage to the battery, DO NOT over tighten the battery hold down.

NOTICE: • If the batteries are dead, then the batteries should be charged. Do not jump start the engine.

Check the level of the electrolyte in the batteries. Add distilled water until level is at the split ring of each cell opening if the level is too low.

Check the battery cables and verify that there are no abrasions or indentations; if necessary, replace the battery cables. Check that the battery terminals are not corroded. Clean and replace them if necessary. The voltage of the battery is 12 volts.

Clean corrosion off battery terminals. A paste made of sodium bicarbonate and water is normally enough to clean terminals and battery box. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water. Coat the terminals with battery terminal grease or dielectric grease in order to prevent future corrosion.

Differential Unit Oil Bath Oil should be level with the dipstick in the differential housing every 10 hours. Fill if needed with the Approved Replacement Fluid shown on page 86. Change the differential oil every 500 hours.

Interior Chaincase The interior chaincase houses the first stage drive components. An oil bath lubricates the drive chain and sprocket. The oil level should be even with the bottom of the check plug opening in the side access cover of the chaincase. Also check the oil condition and change it more frequently than scheduled if it appears dirty.

Exterior Chaincase The exterior chaincase houses the second stage drive components. An oil bath lubricates the drive chain and sprocket. Digging Attachment Maintenance Checking the Digging Chain Tension

The grease in the hydraulic track tension is pressurized. Grease may be released under pressure and cause serious injury. Loosen the grease valve slowly. Do not loosen the grease valve more than one turn. Do not remove the grease fitting.

The slack between the digging chain and the bottom of the boom is an indicator of proper chain adjustment. The “rule-of-thumb” measurement for the amount of slack is approximately 3/4 inch (19 mm) per foot of digging depth. Values vary with chain wear, weight and digging conditions.

• Example: 6 foot digging depth X 3/4 inches = 4 1/2 inch slack • Example: 1.8 meters digging depth X 1.9 cm = 11.4 cm slack

Digging Attachment Maintenance 1. Clean the area around the grease fittings with cleaning solvent.

2. Loosen and remove the two main alignment bolts.

3. Loosen and remove the locking plate bolts, locking plates and alignment bolts.

4. Remove the plate washers.

5. Slowly loosen the grease fitting (counterclockwise) two or three revolutions to let the grease flow from around the fitting. DO NOT remove the plug.

6. When the chain tension is correct and the alignment holes are aligned, tighten the grease fitting. It may be necessary to apply force to the end of the trencher boom.

7. Reinstall the two main alignment bolts. Then, install the plate washers and alignment bolts.

8. Tighten all alignment bolts to 1260-1360 ft-lbs (1708-1844 N-m).

Increasing Digging Chain Tension Carry out each step on both sides of the machine.

1. Clean the area around the grease fittings with cleaning solvent.

2. Loosen and remove the two main alignment bolts.

3. Loosen and remove the locking plate bolts, locking plates and alignment bolts.

4. Remove the plate washers.

5. Use a grease gun to put grease into the grease fittings until the chain tension is correct. Apply equal amounts of grease in each fitting on either side of the machine.

6. Install the plate washers, locking plates, alignment bolts.

7. Tighten wedge plate to 600 ft-lbs 8. Tighten all alignment bolts to 1260-1360 ft-lbs (1708-1844 N-m).

9. Check the chain tension after you have dug a trench about 10 ft. (3 m) long. Readjust as necessary.

• Ensure the load is stable and properly secured before removing mounting nuts and bolts.

• Do not walk under the boom or chain guard after the mounting bolts or nuts have been removed.

Digging Attachment Maintenance Boom Assembly Remove Digging Chain Assembly - Double Chain 1. Relieve the tension on the chain by relieving the pressure being exerted by the boom adjustment cylinders.

• Open the access opening in the boom hood.

• Very slowly loosen the grease fitting at the rear of the adjustment cylinder.

• Loosen only until grease begins escaping from the relief hole in the adjustment cylinder barrel. It is not necessary to remove the fitting.

• If this does not provide sufficient slack in the chain to disassemble, collapse the cylinders more by using appropriate equipment to push on the tailwheel area of the boom.

2. Locate the master pin in the digging chain (there may be more than one).

3. Rotate the digging chain until the master chain link is approximately half way up the boom on the top side.

4. Mark the position of the cutter bars above and on either side of the chain master link assembly.

5. Remove these cutter bars.

6. Attach a suitable lifting device to the link behind the master pin.

7. Using a pin press, press the master pin out.

8. Repeat this procedure with the second chain assembly.

9. Start the trencher engine.

10. Move the trencher forward slowly while rotating the digger drive sprockets in reverse. This should disengage the digging chain from the headshaft drive sprockets and the boom.

3. Unfasten and remove the mounting bolts in the outer half of the tailwheel clamp.

4. Repeat for both clamps.

5. Remove the tailwheel assembly from the boom end section.

6. Move the tailwheel assembly to an appropriate work area for service.

1. Attach a lift chain or strap to the lifting eyes. Using appropriate lifting device, take up the tension in the lift chain or strap. Ensure the primary boom section is fully supported.

2. Remove the mounting bolt lock plates that protect the boom mounting bolts. Put the lock plates, capscrews and lock plate washers in a secure location.

3. Remove the boom mounting bolts and washers. Put them in a secure location.

4. Attach an appropriate lifting device to the boom section.

5. Put the lifting device in reverse and back up. The primary boom section should come out of the boom hood slowly to avoid any damage to the boom section or the boom hood.

1. Using an appropriate lifting device, lift the tailwheel assembly and position it inside the tailwheel clamps on the tailwheel section.

2. Attach the outer half of the tailwheel clamp to the boom end section. Torque bolts to 300-380 ft./lbs.

3. Place the boom sub-assembly, with the tailwheel assembly attached, behind the trencher. The curved side of the boom should be against the ground. The tailwheel should be farthest from the trencher.

Digging Attachment Maintenance 4. Attach the lifting device so that when the boom is lifted, the boom mounting box tilts up at a slight angle toward the trencher boom hood.

5. Using the boom hoist cylinders, elevate the boom hood until the boom guides inside the boom hood are aligned with the boom mounting box.

6. Apply a generous coating of multi-purpose grease to the boom guides on the inside of the boom hood and the guide rails on the boom mounting box.

7. Slowly insert the end of the boom into the boom hood. Push on the tailwheel end of the boom subassembly with appropriate equipment. As the boom is being inserted, the boom hood may need to be raised or lowered slightly to maintain proper alignment with the boom.

8. Be sure the chain adjusting cylinder are fully collapsed. then push the boom subassembly into the boom hood until the adjusting cylinders contact the push plate.

9. Install the mounting bolts and hardened washers through the slots in the boom hood. Do not tighten.

10. Unfold the digging chain and cutter plate assembly behind the machine with the cutter plates down and the tool holders toward the machine.

11. Back the machine over the chain assembly until approximately 10 feet (3.05 m) of the chain is resting behind the tailwheel centerline.

12. Using an appropriate lifting device, pick up the free end of the chain assembly and wrap it around the tailwheel along the top of the boom sub-assembly. Pull enough chain along the top of the boom to engage the drive sprockets.

13. Attach a long tow chain to the free end of the chain assembly. Attach the opposite end of the tow chain to appropriate equipment.

14. With the drive sprockets rotating slowly in reverse, move the digging chain assembly forward slowly.

Continue until the free end of the digging chain is 3-4 ft (0.9-1.2 m) past the center of the tailwheel. Stop the digger drive sprocket.

15. Attach an appropriate lifting device to the free end of the digging chain and wrap around the tailwheel.

Slowly lower the boom until it is resting on the ground.

16. Disconnect the lifting device from the chain assembly.

17. Using a lift chain or tow strap and a chain puller, tighten the digging chain until the links and bushings are aligned.

18. When the chain links are aligned, start the master pin into the round hole in the chain side plate. Use a pin press to drive the master pin through the chain link.

19. Bolt on cutter bars over the master link section of the chain.

Digging Attachment Maintenance Digging Tooth Replacement Worn or broken digging teeth can reduce trench production and quality. They can cause undo wear and tear on other machine components. Inspect the teeth several times each day. Be aware of a slowdown in trench production or abnormal machine vibration. Either of these may indicate digging teeth need to be replaced. Stop the machine and investigate.

There are different types of teeth available. Contact the factory for assistance in selecting the correct tooth for the type of soil or rock you are digging in.

Teeth are held in the tooth holders in two different ways:

External Spring Clip: The tooth shaft has a turned down area where a spring clip fits. The spring clip goes on the backside of the tooth holder and holds against the back of the tooth block.This type of tooth can be pushed or tapped from the rear after removing the spring clip when worn out or broken.

Internal Clip: The tooth shaft has a turned down area where a clip goes inside the tooth holder and holds against the tooth holder inner wall. This type of tooth can be tapped from the rear when the tooth is worn or broken.

The same tooth holder can be used for both types of teeth. The force of the impact holds the tooth in the holder while digging. Between impacts, the clip holds the tooth in place. tooth assembly 1 (Ext Spring Clip Above)

Failure to turn off the machine and lockout systems before doing maintenance work on the conveyor may result in personal injury or death. Turn off power, relieve system pressures, and turn the Battery switch to the OFF position. Remove key from the ignition switch and install a lock on the Battery switch. Use proper lockout and tagout procedures before working on the machine.

When the conveyor shift hold-down brackets are removed from the tractor body, the conveyor will be very unstable. Serious injury could result. Ensure the conveyor assembly is properly supported before removing the brackets.

Conveyor Assembly Disassembling the Conveyor Shift Assembly 1. Disconnect the hydraulic hoses from the conveyor drive motors. Cap the hoses to prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.

2. With an appropriate lifting device, support the conveyor assembly.

3. Detach the conveyor shift hold-down brackets from the tractor body. Remove them.

4. Using an appropriate lifting device, remove the conveyor assembly from the trencher body.

5. To replace the conveyor shift shaft mount: unfasten and detach the shaft mount from the trencher body.

6. To service the shift shaft gearbox: • Disconnect the hydraulic hoses from the shift motor. Cap the hoses to prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.

• Remove the mounting bolts that attach the drive motor to the shift gearbox. Detach the motor and set aside.

• Detach the gearbox from the shift shaft and remove it. Place it in a suitable service location.

• Inspect the shift shaft for wear. Repair or replace as necessary.

Assembling the Conveyor Shift Assembly 1. Attach the shift shaft gearbox to the mounting brackets on the tractor body.

2. Attach the drive motor to the gearbox.

3. Connect the hydraulic hoses.

4. Slide the shaft mount onto the shift shaft.

5. Install the shift shaft subassembly into the tractor body.

6. Place one end of the shift shaft into the gearbox.

7. Align the mounting holes for the shaft mount and the tractor body holes. Install fasteners.

8. Using appropriate lifting equipment, install the conveyor in the tractor body. The conveyor frame should align with the shift shaft drive sprockets. Continue to support the conveyor until it is secured to the holddown brackets.

9. Attach the hold-down brackets to the tractor body. There is a left-hand bracket and a right-hand bracket.

10. Connect the conveyor drive motor hydraulic hoses.

11. Follow all machine starting procedures. Start the engine.

12. Ensure all personnel are clear of the conveyor area.

13. Shift the conveyor to the left and then to the right to check for proper alignment and any restrictions in its movement.

14. If the conveyor shift is working properly, turn off the machine.

15. Inspect the work area for hydraulic leaks

1. Remove the bottom plug and drain the gear oil from the gearbox.

2. Install the grease fitting in the bottom plughole.

3. Remove the top plug.

4. Install grease through the bottom grease fitting until grease relieves through the top plug opening in the housing. Amount of lubricant needed: 28-35 oz. (828-1035 cc).

5. Reinstall the top plug.

Disassembling the Conveyor Assembly 1. Disconnect the hydraulic hoses that are connected to the conveyor drive motors. Plug or cap these hoses to prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system. Do not allow the hoses to drop below the level of the hydraulic tank. This could cause the oil to drain from the tank.

2. Release the tension on the conveyor belt by loosening the jam nut on the adjusting bolt on the side farthest away from the pulley.

Conveyor Assembly Installing the Drive Pulley 1. Using appropriate lifting equipment, move the pulley to the conveyor frame.

2. Align the take-up bearing slot with the conveyor frame pulley guides and insert the pulley assembly into the frame.

3. Insert the end of the adjustment bolt into the slot in the take-up bearing/motor mount.

4. Secure the pulley to the adjustment bolt with the cotter pin.

Conveyor Assembly Installing the Conveyor Belt Install the conveyor belt on the conveyor frame. Using a set of wide mouth channel locks or clamps, pull the conveyor belt ends together until the lacing pin can be inserted.

Adjusting the Conveyor Belt Tension 1. Slide the drive pulley toward the outside of the conveyor frame.

2. Tighten the jam nut closest to the idler pulley against the conveyor frame.

3. Measure the distance from the conveyor frame where the adjustment bolt mounts to the take-up bearing.

This distance should be the same on both sides of the idler pulley to help the conveyor belt maintain a straight track.

4. Turn the jam nut against the conveyor frame equally on both sides of the drive pulley to adjust the tension. When the proper belt tension has been reached, tighten the second jam nut against the conveyor frame to prevent belt tension from easing due to vibrations.

5. Reconnect the hydraulic hoses to the conveyor drive motor.

Conveyor Assembly Assembling the Conveyor Belt

1. Remove the used hinge pin.

• Release tension on the conveyor belt.

• Dislodge any material that is bending the pin.

• Twist the pin 1/4 turn at both ends and remove.

2. Square the belt end at a right angle to the centerline. Make a concave cut across the belt using a knife and a template.

3. A Flexco Curved Template is required to obtain maximum joint strength.

4. Place template arrow on centerline. Align the template edge with the belt edge. Nail to belt. Using a Flexco Power Punch, punch the boltholes in the belt.

5. Position fastener strip on the belt end with the Flexco Hinge on top. Assemble nuts and bolts, turning nuts down by hand. Be sure bolt head engages lug on fastener.

6. Using the Flexco Power Wrench, tighten the nuts at the arrow first. Then tighten the remaining nuts. The teeth should penetrate the bottom of the belt. The rubber cover should pucker behind the top of the plates.

7. Insert the gauge pin into the loops of the fasteners and using a pair of Flexco Bolt Breakers, break off the bolts. Using a slight rocking motion while keeping the bolt breakers down tight on the nuts will remove the bolts cleanly.

8. Insert the tubing into the loops of the fasteners. Using the gauge pin to guide the tubing into place. Pull out the gauge pin.

9. Mesh the loops of each side of the splice together and insert the hinge pin. Inserting the gauge pin first and feeding the hinge pin from the opposite side of the joint while backing out the gauge pin eases hinge pin insertion.

10. Notch trailing edges of all belts 24 inch (610 mm) or wider.

The following general rules apply to hydraulic system maintenance: 1. Always keep the hydraulic tank filled to the correct level.

2. Clean filters and strainers or replace elements at the first sign of clogging. Replace elements after break in of the trencher, about 50 hours, then at regular intervals or when clogged.

3. Keep the system clean. Dirt and extreme heat is the most common cause of hydraulic system failure.

4. Cap open lines and ports immediately when piping is disconnected for any reason.

5. Keep the heat exchanger core and cooling fins clean at all times for maximum cooling efficiency. Inspect daily for any external blockage and clean as required.

Replacing Hydraulic Filters Return Filters The return filter(s) element(s) should be changed every 500 operating hours, or when the dirt alarm indicates that a change is needed. With the oil cold and before starting the engine, check the location of the dirt alarm needle on the filter head. Start the engine and run at operating RPM. Then check the filter needle again. If the needle has moved noticeably, the filter element may need to be changed.

Charge Filters The suction filters should be changed every 500 hours of operation, or when the filter warning on the display screen indicates that a change is needed. To change the filters: • Wash the trencher to prevent unnecessary contaminants from entering the system.

• To prevent accidental engine start up, use proper lockout and tagout procedures.

• Remove the filters and replace with the same type of element.

• After the charge pump pressure gauge reads 160-300 PSI, idle the engine at approximately 1,000 RPM with all drives disengaged for about 15 minutes to bleed all the air from the system.

Hydraulic Oil Reservoir Check the oil level daily. If the oil level is low add the appropriate amount of fresh oil. See “Approved Replacement Fluids” on page 86 for proper oil type. Do not mix different oils as they may be incompatible.

Hydraulic System Maintenance Test Hydraulic Oil NOTICE: Failure to send in samples for inspection will void the warranty.

After 500 operating hours, obtain a sample of hydraulic oil from the hydraulic tank. Use the inspection bottles provided by Trencor; additional sample kit supplies can be ordered (Trencor Part Number 0H100000). Send the samples to Trencor for analysis. You will be notified if it is necessary to change the hydraulic oil. When changing the oil, the filters must also be changed. Follow instructions below.

Change Hydraulic Reservoir Oil Hydraulic filters MUST be replaced each time the oil is changed. When draining oil from the reservoir and filter, ALWAYS use a container and dispose of properly. Make sure the container has enough capacity to avoid any spillage. NEVER allow oil to drain onto the ground.

1. Verify that the power is off. Lockout and tagout the machine.

2. Clean the external covers and walls of the hydraulic tank.

3. Drain the hydraulic oil from the tank in a container suitable for transportation or disposal.

4. Remove all access covers and remove any deposit of old gaskets.

5. Keep all bolts together.

6. Remove the suction strainers inside the tank.

7. Clean the breather cap with a lint free cloth.

8. Inspect the tank for metal particles and foreign matter. Clean these materials out of the tank to minimize oil contamination.

9. Clean and reassemble the suction strainer. Alternatively, you may wish to use a new suction strainer.

10. Replace the return filter elements.

11. Put the gasket on the inspection cover and reassemble.

12. Tighten the bolts on the cover. Refill the reservoir with the hydraulic oil recommended in “Approved Replacement Fluids” on page 86. Do not mix products from different companies due to the possibility of reactions among the oil.

13. Fill the tank to the appropriate level using the gauge on the outside. The oil level will vary considerably according to the effect of temperature (hot oil increases in volume) and the position of the hydraulic cylinders.

14. Open the gate valves and wait approximately 10 minutes for the filters to fill with oil before starting the engine.

15. After the charge pump pressure gauge reads 160-300 PSI, idle the engine at approximately 1,000 RPM with all drives disengaged for about 15 minutes to bleed all the air from the system.

16. Confirm proper oil level in tank.

17. Run the engine at high speed for 5 minutes.

18. Turn off the engine and inspect for leaks.

Check and Adjust Track Tension The grease in the hydraulic track tension is pressurized. Grease may be released under pressure and cause serious injury. Loosen the grease valve slowly. Do not loosen the grease valve more than one turn. Do not remove the grease fitting.

Check and adjust track tension regularly. Mud, sand and clay pack into the tracks. Consider loosening track adjustment to minimize packing. An easy-access hydraulic track adjuster simplifies track adjustment.

Make a track tension adjustment when the track is too loose. Track tension must be correct. Track tension is measured as the catenary sag of the chain between the longest unsupported sections of chain (see the drawing below). Catenary sag for the machine should be 1 inch plus or minus 1/4 inch (25.4 mm plus or minus 6.35 mm).

Undercarriage Maintenance Extend Undercarriage Life Check and adjust track tension regularly Mud, sand and clay pack into the tracks. Consider loosening track adjustment to minimize packing. An easy-access hydraulic track adjuster simplifies track adjustment.

Keep tracks as clean as possible When abrasive materials like dirt and stones are packed in the tracks, they speed track wear. Clean the undercarriage more frequently in freezing temperatures. Park the machine on planks so the machine will not freeze to the ground.

Check for loose or missing hardware Replace missing or damaged parts immediately. Tighten all bolts to specifications.

Avoid high-speed operation for extended duration, when reversing, and in rough terrain Wear rates increase as a function of travel speed. Operating at high speed in reverse is particularly damaging.

Avoid spinning the tracks Spinning decreases undercarriage component life.

Vary operation and keep turns to a minimum Continually working uphill, downhill or sideways increase wear on certain components. Turning adds stress and side wear. If you are turning frequently, alternate turning directions so components wear more evenly.

Whenever possible, match track shoes to underfoot conditions Track shoes must provide adequate traction and flotation (the ability to stay on the surface of soft ground or mud) but should be no wider than necessary. Proper rotation occurs when the grouser fully penetrates the ground without letting the track shoes go below the surface.

Disassemble the Undercarriage 1. Place the trencher on blocks.

2. Locate the track chain master pin. This pin has a small indentation on the end. Position the track so the track master pin is on the topside of the undercarriage.

3. Loosen the grease fill valve on the front idler assembly to relieve the tension on the track chain. It will be easier to remove the track master pin.

4. Detach the two grouser pads above the track chain master link. Remove the grouser bolts and lock nuts and discard them (they were intentionally stressed when they were installed).

5. Using a portable track press, remove the track chain master pin.

6. Unroll the track chain from the crawler drive sprocket and the track front idler assembly. Using appropriate lifting equipment, unroll the chain until it is laying flat on the traveling surface.

7. Unfasten the front track idler assembly from the track frame.

8. Remove the front idler assembly from the track frame. Place in a suitable location to perform required service.

9. Disconnect all hydraulic hoses from the track drive motor. Plug the open hydraulic lines to prevent loss of hydraulic oil and to prevent the introduction of contaminants into the hydraulic system.

10. Detach the crawler drive sprocket. Using appropriate lifting equipment, remove the crawler drive sprocket from the gearbox. Mark the sprocket on the gearbox side to prevent misalignment when reattaching.

Undercarriage Maintenance 11. Support the gearbox. Remove the fasteners that secure the gearbox to the track frame. Remove the gearbox and place it in a suitable service area.

12. Unfasten the track rock guards from the track frame. Remove the track rock guards.

13. Support the track rollers using a hydraulic floor jack or other suitable equipment. Detach the track rollers from the track frame.

Assemble the Undercarriage 1. The tractor body/track frame should still be on blocks.

2. Attach the track rollers to the track frame.

3. Slide the front idler assembly into the end of the track frame, spring end first.

4. Attach the crawler drive gearbox to the track frame.

5. Rotate the gearbox to the same position it was in before removal. This will correctly time the sprockets and attach the hydraulic hoses.

6. Attach the crawler drive sprocket to the gearbox.

7. Install the sprocket in the same position it was in before removal. This will correctly align the sprockets.

8. Loosen the grease valve in the front idler assembly until grease can escape.

9. Collapse the front idler spring as much as possible to ease the assembly of the track chain.

10. Position the track chain under the track rollers. Remove the tractor body from the lifting blocks and set on the track rollers.

11. Align the track chain with the crawler sprocket teeth.

12. Wrap the track chain around the front idler assembly and run the excess toward the crawler sprocket.

13. Using a come-along or other appropriate device, tighten the chain.

14. Insert the master pin into the track chain using a portable track press.

15. Attach the grouser pads to the track chain with new grouser bolts and nuts. Torque the M27 grouser bolts to 495 ft-lbs (670 N-m) plus 1/3 of a turn more.

16. Attach the track chain rock guards to the track frame.

17. Re-attach the hydraulic hoses to the crawler motor.

18. Tighten the track assembly tension using the grease valve on the front idler assembly. The valve is located into the access hole on the side of the track frame. Check the track chain tension by placing a straight edge over the track and measuring the track deflection midway between the carrier roller and the front idler assembly. Do not operate the track chain too tight. See “Check and Adjust Track Tension” on page 117.

19. When the track chain is adjusted properly, secure cover with fasteners.

Undercarriage Maintenance Crawler Gearbox The planetary gear drive is installed as one complete unit into the crawler frame. Subassembly of components is not required. The gear case and hydraulic motor have an independent oil reservoir. Although the motor is integrated, servicing or replacing the motor can be done without the removal of the gear drive. The propel drive is suitable to be mounted on either the left or right side of the machine.

• Brake - The hydraulically released, wet running, multi-plate brake, integrated in the gearbox, is a parking brake. It is normally closed by spring force and released when pressurized by hydraulic oil.

Check Crawler Gearbox Oil Level

Oil Fill/Level Plug at 2 o’clock

Oil Drain Plug at 6 o’clock

1. Park the machine on a level surface.

2. Position the machine so an oil fill/level plug is in the 2 o’clock position and a drain plug is in the 6 o’clock position.

3. Remove the oil level plug.

4. Check the oil level. It should be even with the bottom of the hole of the plug.

5. Add oil if necessary.

6. Install and tighten the plug.

7. Repeat for the other crawler gearbox.

Change Crawler Gearbox Oil 1. If possible, change the oil when the oil is warm.

2. Position the machine as described above.

3. To drain the oil, remove the oil fill/level plug at the 2 o’clock position. Then remove the plug at the 6 o’clock position. Catch the oil in a suitable container. Dispose of old oil according to local regulations.

4. Install and tighten the oil drain plug at the 6 o’clock position.

5. Add new gear oil through the oil fill port at the 2 o’clock position until the oil is even with the bottom of the hole.

6. Install and tighten the oil fill/level plug.

7. Check for leaks.

8. Repeat for the other crawler gearbox.
