Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head INTRODUCTION An Operator's manual, Service manual, Measuring and Control System manual, and a Parts catalog are made available by Tigercat to assist the dealer, customer and operator in becoming familiar with the features of the TH570 Harvesting Head serial number 5700101 to 5701000.

The Operator and Maintenance manual will assist the operator with the techniques of proper and safe operation of the Harvesting Head. It contains important information regarding the safe operation of the head, a preventive maintenance schedule and servicing procedures to ensure optimum performance.

Section 1 contains safety information that must be followed. As well, throughout the rest of the manual WARNING and CAUTION notices are displayed where necessary, drawing attention to possible hazards when performing certain procedures.

The operator of this equipment must be made aware of the fact that; The safety of the people on the ground i.e., workers or bystanders is the responsibility of the harvesting head and machine operator.

Only trained personnel should be allowed to operate or work on the harvesting head and machine.

The information contained in this manual is current at time of printing. Improvements to the harvesting head are ongoing and may not be covered, therefore in these cases contact your Tigercat dealer for the appropriate information.

The phrase “and up” appearing in this manual after the serial number implies that the related information is current for any harvesting head serial number HIGHER than the serial number preceding the “and up”.

Tigercat reserves the right to make changes to the harvesting head after this manual release date that may not immediately appear in this manual.

Every effort is made to send out updates on a regular basis. If the harvesting head in question was built after the release date of this manual and there is a discrepancy, call Tigercat service department. The release date appears on the first page.

NON-APPROVED FIELD PRODUCT CHANGES The installation of any unauthorized attachment or changes made of any kind to this Tigercat product could affect the product's ability to perform as originally intended. The product's integrity, stability and it's ability to perform safely could be at serious risk.

IT IS Tigercat POLICY THAT NO CHANGES ARE TO BE MADE TO ITS PRODUCTS INCLUDING DELETIONS OR ADDITIONS OTHER THAN A Tigercat APPROVED OPTION FITTED IN THE FACTORY APPROVED MANNER. Official approval to make changes or install options is only to be undertaken as follows: • The relevant options for that product must be shown or listed on current Tigercat documentation or literature such as a printed specification sheet, price list, parts manual, or product literature issued by Tigercat.

• Approved options or product changes authorized in writing by the Tigercat Engineering Manager.

Authorization by any other person is unacceptable.

Unauthorized changes made or contributed to by a person or organization may result in creating a dangerous situation and therefore the person or organization will be considered to have assumed the risk involved or be negligent in having created this situation.

Weight is an important factor when considering the addition of options or an attachment, Refer to your Tigercat distributor for information on maximum permissible operating weight and the effect the addition of various options may have on your machine.

Tigercat will not be held responsible for any situation that may arise resulting from Non-approved Field Product Changes to its product.

Should Tigercat become involved in a dispute resulting from changes made to the product without proper authorization by Tigercat as stated above, Tigercat will take whatever action is appropriate to protect its interests.

The product warranty policy and the certification on any safety items installed on the modified product will become NULL and VOID if the above policy is not adhered to as specified.

Non-approved product changes also nullify warranties given to Tigercat by its component manufacturers.

Remember that safety is a prime responsibility of all.

To minimize the risks and promote safety at all times, this section of the operator’s manual details a number of safety rules which should always be followed and obeyed.

This safety alert symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! The safety alert symbol identifies important safety messages on machines, safety signs, in manuals, or elsewhere. When you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility of personal injury or death. Follow the instructions in the safety message.

• Always read the operator's manual before operating the machine. Pay close attention to WARNINGS and HAZARD identifications

UNDERSTANDING SIGNAL WORDS

• Follow all instructions from safety inspector and supervisors.

• You must be fully trained to operate this piece of equipment. Know the capabilities and the limitations of the equipment. Learn the most efficient operating techniques. Do not let untrained persons operate the machine.

DANGER DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.

NOTICE NOTICE indicates a potentially damaging situation which, if not avoided, may result in property damage and is not related to personal injury.

• Use recommended protective clothing and safety devices such as gloves, safety boots, safety hat, goggles, and ear protection when necessary. These safety rules highlight both general and specific measures that the operator should be familiar with and adhere to. More specific measures are illustrated with pictograms which may also be attached to the machine in locations pertinent to their respective message. Keep safety labels in good condition. Repair or replace damaged labels.

The following diagram illustrates the HAZARD ZONE. All personnel should be kept clear of this zone while the harvesting head is operating.

The HAZARD ZONE should be considered off limits to all individuals.

Wear a suitable hearing protective device such as earmuffs or earplugs to protect against noise.

Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause impairment or loss of hearing.

• Always use the handrails and steps provided when mounting and dismounting from the machine.

• Do not try to climb onto or off of a moving machine.

• Do not use the seat armrest or joystick as handle when entering or leaving the cab.

Hazard Zone

DANGER The safety of persons outside the cab is the responsibility of the machine operator.

• Do not use the machine foot controls as steps.

• When mounting or dismounting the machine always use the 3 point technique; use one hand with 2 feet or 2 hands with 1 foot.

• When approaching an operating machine on foot, stay at least 150m (500 feet) away until the operator recognizes your presence. Make sure that all harvesting equipment is shut down before advancing to the machine.

WARNING

NOTE: opening the cab front door will stop machine functions. Opening the cab side door will NOT stop machine functions.

Avoid mounting or dismounting the machine in areas with slippery surfaces. Dry, deice, clean up or cover slippery surfaces with an anti-slip material before mounting or dismounting the machine.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head • Do not operate the machine with any defective or inoperable components.

WARNING

• Check all fluid levels.

Do not walk on machine surfaces with steel cleated foot wear. Steel cleats on steel surfaces are slippery and do not provide a safe foot hold.

• Do not operate the machine with any of the exhaust system, safety covers, oil shields, or other devices removed.

WARNING It is not recommended to walk on machine surfaces that are not designated walking areas.

No attempt should be made to walk on angled steel surfaces or surfaces that are irregular in shape.

Walking surfaces on the machine must be covered with anti-slip materials to provide a safe foot hold and prevent slipping.

These anti-slip surfaces should be maintained on a regular basis. If the surface shows signs of wear, the anti-slip material must be replaced immediately.

• To reduce risk of fire, machines should be completely cleaned of debris at least daily, particularly around the engine exhaust components.

Hydraulic oil leaks, excess grease, fuel and oil accumulation (including spillage) should be eliminated immediately, always shut off engine before cleaning machine.

• Keep a first aid kit in an easily accessible location on the vehicle at all times.

WORKING WITH OIL Direct contact with oil implies a risk of skin complaints (example: eczema). Strict hygiene should always be observed.

Some advice which should be observed: • Oils used in this machine may be hot enough to cause serious burns.

• Avoid contact with oil, particularly heated oil.

• Oil on the skin should be washed off immediately with soap and water.

• Wear protective gloves. Hands should be clean before putting on gloves. Apply protective cream to the hands to make washing easier.

• Maintain a clean cab interior, clear away trash or debris.

• Machine should be washed completely at every major service.

• Don't put oily rags in your pockets.

• Inspect the machine daily for signs of damage or unusual wear, to structures.

• Oil soiled clothing should be changed as soon as possible.

• Check for fluid leaks, or faulty operation. Repair or replace malfunctioning parts and systems immediately.

• Always keep an extra overall handy, but not in the machine where it can become dirty.

• Cuts and abrasions must be attended to immediately. Clean them and apply first-aid.

• Check windows and door guards for damage.

• Avoid breathing in oil fumes.

• Check protective windows for cracks, a damaged window has reduced strength to stop flying objects.

All damaged windows must be replaced with original equipment.

• Wash hands and arms frequently (example: at each meal break or as often as possible).

• Check windows for scratching, crazing and cloudiness that could impair clear visibility all around the machine.

SAFETY HAZARDS – VITON SEALS

• Maintain a distance of 3m (10 ft. ) between the machine or boom and any power line carrying up to 50,000 volts or less plus 10mm (1/2 inch) for each addition 1,000 volts above the 50,000 volt level.

O-rings and other seals manufactured of Viton material (fluorine rubber) produce a highly corrosive acid (Hydrofluoric) when subjected to temperatures above 315°C (600°F).

• If State/Provincial, local or job site regulations require even greater safety distances than stated above, adhere strictly to these regulations for your own protection.

This contamination can have extreme consequences on human tissue since it is almost impossible to remove after contact.

• If the machine must be transported, make sure that it is adequately secured to the transporting vehicle.

Refer to specific machine Operators manual for vehicle moving instructions page in SECTION 2.

The following procedures are recommended when inspecting equipment that has been subjected to high temperatures such as fire:

• Stopping the engine immediately after it has been working under load can result in overheating and premature wear of the engine components.

Reduce engine speed to LOW IDLE and let run for approximately 5 minutes to allow gradual dissipation of heat and also to reduce turbo speed. This will also prevent loss of coolant by after boil and possible hot spot damage to the engine.

• Visually inspect any seals or gaskets which have suffered from heat; they will appear black and sticky.

• If these are found, do not touch!!!

• Determine the material composition of any seals or gaskets, If fluoro-elastomer seals (Viton, fluorel, or tecmoflon) have been used, the affected area must be decontaminated before undertaking further work. Natural rubber and nitrile materials are not hazardous.

• Disposable heavy duty gloves (neoprene) must be worn and the affected area decontaminated by washing thoroughly with limewater (Calcium Hydroxide solution).

• Be aware when performing service and maintenance tasks that surfaces and grab handles in and around the engine and cooling system may become very hot when the engine has been running. Contact with hot surfaces may cause injury.

• Any cloths, residue and gloves must be safely discarded after use.

Note: Burning discarded items is not recommended except in an approved incineration process where the dangerous products are treated by alkaline scrubbing.

• Comply with instructions in this manual and also your company’s regulations for the operation of this machine.

SAFETY HAZARDS - OPERATING • Maintain a charged fire extinguisher on the vehicle at all times and KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

• Read, understand and follow all general safety precautions specified by attachment manufacturer.

• Do not carry passengers either in the cab or anywhere else on the machine. The vehicle is provided and approved with seating for the operator only.

• If acid is accidentally splashed into your eyes, flush immediately with clean water and get medical attention.

WARNING

• Do not allow anyone who may be unfit, physically or mentally or who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to operate the machine.

Engine exhaust, some of its constituents, and certain vehicle components contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

• When moving the machine, watch that enough clearance is available on both sides and above the machine or any of its attachments. Extra clearance may be required particularly where the ground is uneven.

• Approach with extreme caution any area where overhanging electrical power lines are present.

Serious injury or death by electrocution can result if the machine or any of its attachments are not kept a safe distance from these lines.

AVOID INJURY FROM BACKOVER ACCIDENTS

Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Wash hands after handling.

• Before moving machine, be sure all persons are clear of the area.

• Always be alert for bystanders moving into the work area. Use horn to warn bystanders before moving the machine.

• When using a signal person, keep the person in view at all times. Always be sure the signal person is clear before backing up.

CAUTION

• To avoid backover accidents: Lead-acid batteries contain sulfuric acid which can severely damage eyes or skin on contact.

Always wear a safety face shield, rubber gloves and protective clothing to reduce risk of accidents.

• Always look around before you back up. Be sure that everyone is clear.

Lead-acid batteries produce flammable and explosive gases. Keep arcs, sparks, open flames and lighted tobacco a safe distance from the batteries.

• Use a signal person when backing up if view is obstructed. Always keep the signal person in view.

• Keep motion warning alarm in working condition.

The motion warning alarm must sound when the machine is moving in forward or reverse.

• Learn the meaning of all flags, signs and markings on the job site and who is responsible for signalling.

• Do not attempt to charge a frozen battery; it can explode.

• Keep windows, mirrors and lights in good condition.

• Disconnect battery before working on electrical systems as follows:

• Dust, heavy rain, fog, snow etc. can reduce visibility. As visibility decreases, reduce speed and use proper lighting.

1. Turn OFF the battery disconnect switch in the cab 2. Disconnect negative starter motor cable from both battery posts 3. Disconnect positive master solenoid cable from both battery posts NOTE: Connect ground terminal last when reconnecting.

• Do not short out battery terminals for any reason.

Serious burns or an explosion can result.

OPERATING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

CAB EXITS There are three ways to exit the cab in case of an emergency.

1. Front door, this is also the main point of entry and is the only door that should be used under normal operating conditions to enter or leave the cab. This door is also equipped with a safety interlock switch.

See safety interlock switch on front door in machine operators manual.

• Turn OFF the engine when refuelling – DO NOT refuel the machine while smoking or near an open flame or sparks.

2. Side door, should be used for emergency exits only.

Do not use this door to routinely enter or leave the cab. This door is not equipped with a safety interlock switch and therefore when left open will not deactivate the pilot controls in the cab. ALWAYS shut OFF engine before using the side door exit.

• Check that no other personnel have moved into a hazardous area before starting the machine.

• Sound the machine horn before starting the machine.

3. Escape hatch, this is a third cab exit for use if the side exit or front door exit become blocked.

This hatch is not equipped with a safety interlock switch and therefore when left open will not deactivate the pilot controls in the cab. ALWAYS shut OFF engine before using the escape hatch exit.

IMPORTANT! The operator of the machine must be familiar with these emergency exits and how to use them.

• The operator’s seat is equipped with lap and shoulder harness belts. Use both of these restraint systems at all times when operating the machine.

All operators should practice using all the cab exits to become familiar with escape procedures should they need to perform them in the dark, when the machine is in a rolled position, or other possible adverse condition.

• Start the engine according to the instructions titled "OPERATING MACHINE" in SECTION 2 of the machine manual.

All three exits should be checked to make sure that they are operational and will function in an emergency. The safety interlock mechanism on the front door or the side door and escape hatch retaining mechanisms must not be tampered with or defeated.

WARNING Never use a liquid starting aid to start an engine.

IMPORTANT! Unlock both doors before operating machine to allow opening from the outside in case of an emergency. Make sure that the doors are operational, open the doors twice, once using the exterior latch handle and once using the interior handle.

This machine is equipped with a computer controlled heating element in the engine intake system. Starting fluids will explode on contact with the heating element.

• Before moving the machine to the work site, check to ensure that all doors, panels, and access covers are installed properly and secured.

HARVESTING ATTACHMENT – GENERAL SAFETY: Improper operation, maintenance or repair of this product can be dangerous and could result in injury or death. Do not operate or perform any maintenance or repair of this product until you have read and understood the operation and repair information contained in the manuals provided by the attachment manufacturer.

OPERATION: Felling trees with the harvester is very dangerous and should be done only by properly trained and experienced operators.

• Lower attachment to ground and turn pilot system off whenever machine is not in use.

• Always fell trees in the direction that they are leaning.

The following are general safety guidelines for harvesting attachments. Note the design, operation, and maintenance of attachments varies among manufacturers. Always follow the specific safety, maintenance, and operating procedures provided by the attachment manufacturer.

• Never fell trees close to overhead power lines, vehicles, houses, roads/pathways, etc.

WARNING The operator must release trees from the attachment, place attachment on the ground, and shut pilot system off if someone enters into the hazard zone.

The operator of the carrier and harvesting head must be properly trained in the operation of the equipment and its safety requirements.

PRIOR TO STARTING OPERATION:

• Never fell trees when there are personnel on the ground within the 150 metre (500 ft) “hazard zone.”

WARNING

• During operation do not allow anyone within the safety zone of at least 150 metres (500 ft) from the machine.

The attachment may release held trees when the cab front door is opened, the pilot system is turned off or the fire suppression system is activated. Never exit the cab with a tree suspended in the attachment.

• Never fell trees in the direction of the operator’s cab.

• Ensure no one is near the machine where the risk of personal injury is present.

• Ensure no one is in the line of the chain saw when starting or operating the harvesting head. The hydraulically driven saw chain reaches high speeds and is an extreme hazard if the chain breaks.

• Regularly inspect, check and maintain the saw guide (bar), the saw chain and sprocket, ensuring that all components are secure and not damaged as detailed in the harvesting attachment operator’s manual.

• Ensure that all safety equipment upgrades available from the attachment manufacturer have been installed.

• Before starting each shift the operator must test ALL functions of the carrier and attachment to ensure that they are in proper working order.

WARNING Avoid the risk of chain shot. Never operate the attachment so that the saw bar is directly in line with the cab or any personnel!

• Do not process trees with the saw guide (bar) aligned with the operator’s cab. The hydraulically driven saw chain reaches high speeds and is an extreme hazard if the chain breaks.

• Operate so that the chip discharge area of the harvesting head is not directed at people, livestock, houses, buildings, roads or other machines.

• Be particularly observant with the zone in line with the chain saw.

Working with the harvesting head in close to the machine: • Increases operator visibility, permitting better placement of the head on the tree and improving awareness of saw bar location and penetration, tree species and areas of rot, splits and crooks.

• Reduces the potential for damage to both the standing trees and the harvesting head and stick boom components.

• Improves the stability of a machine working on uneven ground as the weight of the boom, head and tree need not be extended as far out in front of the machine.

The boom of this machine is designed to enable the harvesting head to be tucked in close to the operator’s cab. This ability maximizes the manoeuvrability of the harvesting head to work around standing trees and while thinning in dense stands. See both the upper and lower sections of Figure 1.

• Broadens the working area that can be reached by the boom and thereby lessens the need to reposition the machine as frequently during harvesting operations.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head However operators of these machines are advised that working with the harvesting head in close to the machine also increases the chances of the harvesting head making contact with the front area of the cab, particularly if the head is swinging backwards as it dangles from the end of the stick boom. See both the upper and lower sections of Figure 2.

For all machines equipped with a harvesting head, the following procedures must be followed during the operation of the machine to avoid contact of the harvesting head with the cab.

Safety Should contact between the harvesting head and the cab occur at any time during the operation of the machine, the following procedure must be completed.

1. Inspect the cab, the front door and the front window immediately to determine if any damage has occurred.

2. Be certain to read, understand and follow the sections in the machine manual titled “CARE OF POLYCARBONATE WINDOWS IN CAB” and “INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE”.

1. When nearing boom positions shown in Figure • Always keep the head in the upright harvesting position.

• Do not tilt the head from the harvesting to the processing position as the saw housing may contact the cab.

• Reduce the speed of boom movement. Rapid movement could cause the base of the harvesting head to swing backwards towards the cab.

• Avoid any sudden movements with the track drive system as this could cause the head to swing backwards into the cab.

2. Never bring the harvesting head in close to the machine while the harvesting head is swinging on the end of the stick boom. See Figure 2.

3. Do not use the head to pull downed trees directly towards the cab. If the clamping arms slip on the tree, the head may quickly swing towards the cab.

CHAIN SHOT - LOGGING SAFETY

A

Chain Shot is the high-speed ejection of chain parts that can occur in the event of a derailed or broken chain.

While the risk of a chain shot event can't be eliminated, it can be minimized by following some simple operational recommendations.

There is risk of serious injury or death to machine operators and bystanders from chain shot. Follow the manufacturer's application and maintenance instructions and those provided for the equipment on which the cutting chain is used.

Generally, chain shot originates near the driven end of the cutting system, but can also originate from the guide bar tip area. In either situation, it poses the same risk of serious injury or death to the machine operator and any ground personnel nearby.

WARNING CHAIN SHOT HAZARD! It is the operator's responsibility to ensure any bystanders and themselves are not in the plane of the cutting chain.

Orient bar and chain so high velocity parts are thrown away from people and equipment.

In simple terms, no, it can’t. Properly designed chain shot guards and shields reduce the danger of a chain shot from the drive sprocket area. However, there is currently no known way to place similar guards in the guide bar tip area without significant disruption to the cutting operation. Because no guarding is currently possible in the guide bar tip area, chain shots can be generated and pose the same risk of serious injury or death as those generated at the drive sprocket area.

Care should be taken to minimize the exposure of the machine operator and ground personnel to the cutting plane of the cutting system and Shot Cone Zone.

Ground personnel should stay back at least 150 m (500 ft) away and outside the Shot Cone Zone of a working harvester.

Saw chain pieces usually travel in the cutting plane of the guide bar, but can deviate to either side. Although the 'Shot Cone Zone' reflects the most likely chain shot path, deflection can occur, substantially expanding the distance and area chain pieces may travel.

Chain shot projectiles travelling at the speed of a bullet can travel far beyond the above recommended stay back distance.

The stay back distance will help reduce the risk of a chain shot injury, but not eliminate it.

Safety Do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommendations for chain speed. Cutting systems must be inspected frequently. Dull, damaged saw chains should be immediately removed from service for inspection, repair or replacement. Saw chain loops which have broken twice, must be removed from service.

Drive sprockets must be aligned with the groove of the guide bar. Ensure the saw chain/guide bar lubrication system is functioning properly: 0.404-pitch cutting systems should use approximately 7.6 L (2 US gal) of guide bar/chain lubricant or more per eight hour shift in harvesting operations - more when used in processing operations. Three-quarter-pitch cutting systems should use approximately 9.5 L (2.5 US gal) or more per eight hour shift in harvesting applications - more when used in processing operations.

OPERATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS IN GENERAL: • Never begin a cut with the machine operator and ground personnel in the Shot Cone Zone.

• Always begin a cut as close to the ground as possible.

• Always use new and approved parts when assembling and repairing chain.

• Maintain chain in agreement with chain manufacturer’s recommendations.

• Never force a dull chain to cut. A sharp chain places less wear and tear on the cutting system.

• Chain should be sharpened or replaced with a sharp chain at least once per operational shift, or more often if damaged.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head IN COLD CUTTING CONDITIONS: • Use a lighter weight lubricant, if possible, doubling the flow rate.

• Periodically cycle the guide bar without cutting (air cuts), this increases lubricant present on the cutting system.

• Reduce bar feed force.

CONDUCT PROPER GUIDE BAR MAINTENANCE: • Clean the guide bar groove from bar tip to bar tail and keep the oil hole open.

• Turn the guide bar over on a daily basis to equalize wear.

• Cycle the guide bar several times to remove moisture from the guide bar tip.

• Maintain proper chain tension, checking it often.

• During work breaks and at the end of each shift, relieve chain tension to prevent damage to the guide bar tip, saw motor and/or the chain as the chain cools and contracts.

• Reduce chain speed.

In simple terms, your harvester head, when operational, should be treated as if it is two loaded guns (the bar tip and the bar tail) that pose a risk of serious injury or death to the machine operator and ground personnel.

The risk of a chain shot event cannot be eliminated, but the risks can be reduced by following the recommendations provided by your cutting system manufacturer, and the operational recommendations presented here.

• Depth gauges (rakers) must be maintained through the life of a chain.

• Never exceed your chain manufacturer’s operation recommendations.

SERVICING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

• Release hydraulic pressure on all accumulators on the harvesting head. Follow the specific safety, maintenance, and operating procedures provided by the harvesting head manufacturer.

• Never place any part of your body between the roll arms or delimbing arms. This area is a crush zone.

Keep clear to avoid personal injury or death.

• Never place any part of your body near the rolls.

Avoid the risk of entanglement in moving parts.

• Never place any part of your body in front of the saw guide (bar). Avoid the risk of dismemberment. Keep clear to avoid personal injury or death.

• Conduct maintenance inspections at least as frequently as recommended in section 3 of the THIS MANUAL.

• When working in the area of the roll arms, delimbing arms, or rolls and when changing the saw guide (bar) or saw chain the machine must be completely shut down, with the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

• When servicing or repairing equipment, turn OFF the engine. Turn the Battery Disconnect switch OFF and lock out the switch in accordance with local regulations.

This machine is equipped with a remotely operated battery disconnect relay. Some wiring on the machine is live even when the battery disconnect switch is off. When servicing the electrical system, remove the battery cables from the batteries disconnecting the negative cables first.

• Install a “DO NOT START ENGINE” sign on the operator’s cab door and in the engine compartment when making repairs to the machine.

• Before performing maintenance or repair work on any equipment, consult the manufacturer’s instruction manual and follow recommended procedures.

• Do not change the pressure settings of any hydraulic valves or make structural modifications to the harvesting head without obtaining authorized instructions from the harvesting head manufacturer.

Before beginning any service work on the harvesting head, it must be parked in one of two service positions: upright or tilted down.

1. Park the machine on level ground.

FLUID INJECTION INJURY Hydraulic and diesel fuel systems on forestry machines operate at very high pressures, often 207 bar (3000 psi) and above. If a loose connection or a defect in a hose should occur, a fine, high velocity stream of fluid will result. Even for systems pressurized to as little as 7 bar (100 psi), this fluid stream can penetrate human skin as if it were a hypodermic needle.

WARNING Diesel fuel or hydraulic fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin and could result in death or serious injury. If any fluid is injected under the skin, a medical doctor familiar with the treatment of this type of injury must surgically remove it within a few hours.

IN THE EVENT OF ANY SUSPECTED FLUID INJECTION INJURY • Report the injury to your supervisor immediately.

• Seek professional medical attention immediately.

Initially, an accidental fluid injection beneath the skin may only produce a slight stinging sensation. There is a danger that you will tend to ignore this, thinking that it will get better with time. Most often, it does not! Within a very short time the wound may begin to throb painfully, indicating that tissue damage has already begun.

As always the best defence against suffering the effects of fluid injection is to prevent the accident from occurring in the first place.

WHEN SEARCHING FOR POSSIBLE FLUID LEAKS • Never search for leaks with your bare hands. Always wear thick protective gloves.

Similarly fluid injected directly into a blood vessel can spread rapidly through your circulatory system. The human body has little ability to purge injected fluid.

• Be sure to wear safety goggles for eye protection.

Diesel fuel or hydraulic fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin and could result in death or serious injury. If any fluid is injected under the skin, a medical doctor familiar with the treatment of this type of injury must surgically remove it within a few hours.

• Use the end of a long piece of wood to move hoses or other obstacles.

• Keep all body parts well away from the area being investigated for leaks.

Time becomes critical as tissue damage progresses rapidly. The longer you delay getting professional medical attention, the more damage can occur.

Although fluid injection accidents are rare, the resulting injury has on occasion required the amputation of a finger, a hand or in some cases the entire limb. The longer the delay in getting professional medical aid, the further up the limb the tissue damage can spread. An injury of this type can become very serious or even fatal if not dealt with promptly and properly.

• Place the end of a long piece of wood in the suspected path of any fluid stream. Never use any part of your body.

• Recognize that the source of the leak and the fluid streaming from it may be very small and not easily visible. You may only be able to see the fluid that accumulates as a result of the fluid stream.

WHEN PERFORMING ANY SERVICE WORK • Stop the engine and relieve all diesel fuel or hydraulic pressure before disconnecting any lines or otherwise working on the system.

• Never grab any hydraulic or diesel fuel connectors or hoses when they are subjected to pressure.

• Always ensure that hoses are rated for the pressures to which they will be subjected.

• Never use any hoses that you suspect could be defective.

GREASE INJECTION INJURY WHEN USING PNEUMATIC GREASE GUNS Pneumatic grease guns can deliver grease at pressures from 17 - 400 Bar (246 - 5801 psi). It takes less than 7 Bar (100 psi) to inject a substance through human skin.

ALWAYS get professional medical treatment immediately after any type of injection injury.

Provide the physician with information on the type of grease, the pressure setting of the gun, and similar details.

The amount of fluid injected, type of fluid (or material), pressure at which it was injected, and the elapsed time between injection and surgery all influence the chances of successful treatment for this type of serious injury.

Prior to using a high pressure pneumatic grease gun perform the following: • All operators of high pressure pneumatic grease guns MUST be trained in the hazards of its operations and the treatment for such injuries.

• DO NOT OPERATE a high pressure pneumatic grease gun unless you have been trained in the proper operation and are aware of all safety precautions of such a tool.

• Wear protective clothing such as gloves, safety hat and safety glasses.

• Inspect all parts of the grease gun for wear and tear and replace all worn or damaged parts.

• Ensure that protective shrouds are installed on all grease gun nozzles as safety devices.

• Remove dirt and grease from grease fittings prior to greasing.

• Replace any defective grease fittings on equipment with new fittings immediately.

• When badly positioned fittings are identified, replace them with angled or swivel fittings for easier access.

LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS

LIGHTNING SAFETY

WHAT IS A LIGHTNING STRIKE?

In spite of the popular myth that being struck by lightning is an unlikely event, the facts show that lightning strikes occur frequently. As a result loggers are at high risk because their work is outdoors and close to known strike points such as tall trees and heavy equipment.

Lightning is a discharge of the electricity produced by a thunderstorm. As the thunderstorm develops, many small particles of ice within the storm clouds bump together. These collisions create a positive charge at the top of a cloud and a negative charge at the bottom.

As this continues a second positive charge builds up on the ground beneath the cloud, concentrated around high objects such as hills, trees, buildings, equipment and even people.

When the difference between the electrical charge in the cloud and on the ground becomes great enough to overcome the resistance of the insulating air between them, an electrical current flows instantly. This is a lightning strike.

The electrical potential in a lightning strike can be as much as 100 million volts. Lightning strikes can occur over very large distances, even as much as 60 km (37 miles). Lightning travels both in front of and behind a thunderstorm and so strikes happen even when rain has not started or has stopped. Lightning can hit in the same place, many times and often spreads out over 18 m (60 feet) within the soil around the strike point.

Thunder always accompanies lightning. When lightning occurs, the air through which it travels is instantaneously heated to a temperature more than 28,000°C (50,000°F).

The air expands rapidly due to this heating, then quickly contracts as it cools. It is this contracting shock wave that we hear as thunder.

In many areas of the world, lightning strikes are second only to flooding as the greatest cause of storm related deaths and injuries. Although only 10% of lightning strike victims are killed, virtually all from cardiac or respiratory arrest, over 70% of those that survive suffer severe, life-long injury and disability. The symptoms of a lightning strike include memory loss, fatigue, chronic pain, dizziness, sleeping difficulty and the inability to complete several tasks at one time.

Loggers can increase their chances of avoiding a lightning strike by following a few simple safety practices.

1. Designate a member of your crew to: • Monitor daily weather forecasts • Observe local weather conditions • Alert all other members of the crew when a possible lightning threat develops.

2. Don’t start or continue any work that cannot be stopped immediately when a storm moves nearby.

3. Anticipate a high-risk situation and take action early by moving to a low-risk location. Do not hesitate. If there is lightning, you are in danger.

4. Obey the rule - If you see lightning, Flee. If you hear thunder, Clear.

5. Do not follow the now obsolete guideline to take shelter when the time between seeing lightning and hearing thunder is 30 seconds or less. This does not provide sufficient time to ensure safety. Always follow step 4.

6. Remain in your safe location for 30 minutes after the last sight of lightning or the last sound of thunder.

The safest location during lightning activity is inside a fully enclosed, substantially constructed building, a house, office, school, shopping area, etc. These are the safest because of the electrical wiring and plumbing that they contain. Should lightning strike, the electrical current will travel through the wiring or plumbing into the ground. When such a building is nearby, always seek shelter there first.

Unfortunately loggers do not often work close to buildings and therefore other alternatives need to be considered.

Sheds, weather shelters, hunting blinds, tents and other partially open or small structures are not safe against lightning strikes as they lack the electrically grounded components of larger buildings. They are intended for sun or rain protection only. Do not seek shelter from lightning strikes inside these structures.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head The second safest location during lightning activity is inside a fully enclosed car, van, truck or bus with a metal roof and metal sides. The electrical energy of a lightning strike to these vehicles is carried to ground by the conducting outer metal surfaces. This is called the skin effect.

Do not seek safety from lightning strikes in vehicles with fibreglass or plastic body shells or in convertible top vehicles. None of these are safe, as they do not offer skin effect lightning protection.

Heavy forestry equipment such as a skidder, loader, feller buncher, forwarder, etc. with a fully enclosed rollover protective structure (ROPS) cab take advantage of the skin effect and are therefore safe in electrical storms.

However machines with a rollover canopy only are not safe against lightning strikes as they are open to electrically conductive rainwater and do not benefit from the skin effect. Operators of this equipment must abandon their machines and get to a safer location before lightning strikes.

Safety WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE AND SEE LIGHTNING OR HEAR THUNDER. IF YOU CAN, GET INSIDE: Run to the nearest building, motor vehicle or fully enclosed ROPS equipment cab immediately. Being anywhere outside is not safe.

IF INSIDE A BUILDING: • Don’t watch the lightning storm from open windows or doorways. Stay in inner rooms.

• Stay well away from corded telephones, electrical appliances, lighting fixtures, radio microphones, electrical sockets and plumbing pipes and fixtures.

IF INSIDE A MOTOR VEHICLE OR FULLY ENCLOSED ROPS EQUIPMENT CAB: • Under no circumstances whatsoever step outside of the vehicle or off the equipment to move to another shelter. Very dangerous electrical pathways to ground may go through you.

• Shut down all operation, turn off the engine, close all doors and raise all windows.

Rubber tires on motor vehicles and heavy equipment do not increase safety from lightning strikes. Lightning has already travelled a great distance through the air to strike the vehicle. In comparison a few inches of rubber in a tire offers absolutely no additional insulation.

• Sit squarely in the seat with your hands in your lap and your feet flat on the floor mat.

• Do not touch any metallic objects referenced to the outside of the vehicle. Do not touch any door and window handles, control levers, foot pedals, steering wheels, cab interior walls and any other inside to outside metal objects.

• Do not touch any radio or telephone connected to an outside antenna.

Safety IF YOU ARE CAUGHT OUTSIDE AND HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO: • Avoid wide-open areas where you project above the surrounding landscape.

• Seek shelter in a low place, such as a ditch, ravine, valley, canyon or cave.

• Get away from open water such as ponds or streams.

• Do not take shelter under any isolated tall trees or small groups of trees.

• Seek shelter amongst the dense, thick growth of the shortest trees.

• Avoid entering any small enclosures or shelters.

• Do not seek shelter under any motor vehicle or heavy equipment.

• Keep clear of any materials that can conduct electricity such as wire fences and gates, metal pipes, poles, rails and tools.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head WHAT TO DO IF A CO-WORKER HAS BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING: • The victim does not carry any electrical charge.

There is no danger to anyone helping this person.

You can touch him or her immediately.

• Call your local emergency response telephone number immediately.

• If the victim has no pulse, their heart has stopped or they have stopped breathing, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or mouth – to-mouth resuscitation immediately. Use a portable defibrillator if one is available.

• Be careful about staying in the storm to take care of the victim. You can get hit by lightning too. If you can, move the victim to a building as soon as possible.

• To further increase your awareness about lightning safety, see the following web sites.

• Stay at least 15m (50 feet) away from metal objects such as a fuel tank, a vehicle or machinery without a cab, motorcycle, ATV, etc.

• Stay at least 5m (16 feet) apart from any other members of a group so that lightning won’t travel between you.

• Do not use the telephone except for emergencies.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FEEL YOUR SKIN TINGLING, YOUR HAIR STANDS ON END, LIGHT METAL OBJECTS VIBRATE OR YOU HEAR A CRACKLING SOUND: • Lightning is probably about to strike. You only have a few seconds to act.

• Put your feet together. Crouch down like in a baseball catcher’s position. Hold your head down.

Cover your ears to protect them against the noise of the thunder.

• Do not lie flat on the ground. By touching as little of the ground as possible, the lightning may not move across the ground to you.

FIRE PREVENTION

• Clean out all accumulated forest debris (twigs, pine needles, branches, bark, leaves, saw dust, small wood chips) and any other combustible materials from inside the machine belly pans or lower machine structures as well as from areas in proximity to the engine, fuel and hydraulic oil systems no less frequently than at the completion of each work shift.

When working in a forest environment, it is impossible to prevent combustible debris from collecting in tight corners of the machine. This debris may cause a fire.

However, when mixed with fuel, oil or grease in a hot or confined place, the danger of fire is greatly increased.

The following fire prevention guidelines should be used to supplement the operator’s fire prevention efforts. In no case should the guidelines be used, or assumed, as replacements for diligent operator efforts at preventing fires.

The following guidelines will help to keep your equipment up and running efficiently and keep the risk of fire to a minimum: • Maintain a CHARGED fire extinguisher on the machine at all times and KNOW HOW TO USE IT. • Remove debris and blow out dust regularly from the air intake doors, engine radiator and charge air cooler, hydraulic oil cooler, diesel fuel cooler and air conditioning condenser core to prevent overheating of the engine and hydraulics and to maintain efficient operation of the machine. Refer to CLEANING COOLER PACKAGE in SECTION 3.

• Blow off all forest debris and fine organic material accumulated near hot engine exhaust components (turbocharger and exhaust manifold as well as exhaust pipes and muffler) at the completion of each work shift or more frequently when working in logging conditions where large amounts of combustible forest debris are present.

Visual inspection is vital after blow-off to ensure thorough cleanliness. Engine exhaust systems provide numerous small pockets where saw dust, small wood chips and other flammable forest debris can gather. Even small accumulations close to hot exhaust components can ignite and smoulder. If dislodged this smouldering debris can fall into other areas of the machine and thereby spread a fire.

• Inspect the machine regularly for any signs of diesel fuel or hydraulic system leakage. Check for worn or eroded fuel or hydraulic lines before starting up any equipment.

• Clean up any grease, diesel fuel, hydraulic and lubricating oil accumulation and spillage immediately.

• Steam clean the engine, hydraulic pumps, transmission, brake, fuel and hydraulic tank compartments and all machine belly pans at least once a month or more frequently when working in logging conditions where large amounts of combustible forest debris are present.

• Use only non-flammable solutions for cleaning the machine and components.

• Inspect the exhaust system daily for any signs of leakage. Check for worn, cracked, broken or damaged pipes or muffler. Also check for missing or damaged bolts or clamps. Should any exhaust leaks or defective parts be found, repairs must be made immediately. Engine exhaust leaks can cause fires.

Do not operate the machine until the exhaust leak is repaired.

• During daily operation of the machine, the occurrence of exhaust leaks are usually accompanied by a change or increase in engine exhaust noise levels. These audible warnings cannot be ignored. Should any exhaust leaks occur during operation, the machine must be shut down immediately and not put back to work until the necessary repairs have been completed.

• Park the machine at least 15 m (50 ft) away from other equipment at the end of each shift.

• Never leave the machine parked with boom, arch or blade suspended off the ground. Should their supporting hydraulic hoses burn through during a fire, pressurized hydraulic oil may be injected into the fire and the boom, arch or blade will fall rapidly to the ground.

• Turn the battery disconnect switch to OFF at shut down to de-energize all electrical circuits.

• Remain with the machine for at least 45 minutes at the end of operations while the machine cools.

• Remove all keys, lock equipment and fuel fill cap at the end of operations to reduce the risk of vandalism.

• Be cautious when smoking. An open flame, a lighted cigarette, etc., should not be permitted around any vehicle, especially during fuelling operations or when the fuel system is open to the atmosphere or when servicing batteries.

WHAT TO DO TO PREPARE FOR A MACHINE FIRE • Prevent the fire from happening in the first place by ensuring all machine systems are frequently inspected and always well maintained.

• All hand held fire extinguishers must be charged and in working order. Fire extinguishers require routine care. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for inspection and maintenance shown on the label of the fire extinguisher and in the extinguisher manufacturer's manual.

• Any pressurized water systems on the machine (if applicable) must be charged and in working order. Refer to PRESSURIZED WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE in SECTION 3.

• You must have the proper fire extinguishers on site.

Most fires involving mobile forestry equipment will be Class A or B. • Dry chemical extinguishers should be rated ABC and pressurized water extinguishers should be rated A.

• AFTER transporting (trucking) a machine from one job site to the next, open all doors and access panels and blow off any debris that may have repositioned itself onto the engine and exhaust parts due to wind turbulence caused by the journey.

• Before starting repair work, such as welding, the surrounding area should be cleaned and a fire extinguisher should be close by.

• Class A fires involve ordinary combustibles such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber and many plastics, Class B fires occur with flammable liquids such as diesel fuel, oil and grease and Class C fires apply to energized electrical equipment.

• Make sure the nozzle of any hand held extinguisher and pressurized water system available on the machine and at the work site fits within the fire extinguisher access holes in the doors of the machine.

• Store rags and other combustible materials in a safe, fireproof location.

• The fire detection system* must be in working order.

Refer to FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM in SECTION 2.

• Do not use the machine on top of or to push piles of burning timber. A machine fire will most probably result.

• The fire suppression system** must be charged and in working order. Refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM (OPTIONAL) in SECTION 2.

NOTICE Equipment fires adversely effect your ability to log, may increase your insurance premiums dramatically or prevent you from obtaining insurance coverage at all.

• You must be familiar with the recommended procedures for fire contained in the emergency action plan of your company.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head • You must follow all national, state/provincial and local regulations dealing with fire fighting in effect in your specific geographic region. Regulations will vary from region to region but most will usually require: • Workers assigned to fire fighting duties must be physically capable of performing them safely and effectively.

• Workers designated to use fire fighting equipment as part of an emergency action plan must receive full and proper training from a qualified instructor.

• Whenever portable fire extinguishers are provided for use in the workplace, training must be provided to familiarize workers with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with fire fighting.

• Training must be provided upon initial employment and at least annually thereafter.

• After you have received the training as outlined above, you must know how to use the fire extinguisher, the pressurized water system (if applicable) and the fire suppression system** on your machine. There is not enough time available to read instructions during a fire emergency.

• All information necessary for you to immediately contact all sources of help (local fire department, etc) in the event of a fire emergency must be recorded and readily available at all times.

Safety BEFORE DECIDING TO FIGHT THE FIRE, BE CERTAIN THAT: 8. The fire is small and not rapidly spreading.

9. There is always a clear, safe escape route to your back.

10. You have received training in the use of the available fire extinguishing systems and are confident you can operate them effectively.

11. If in any doubt about whether or not to fight the fire – DON’T. Instead stand well clear of the fire and wait for help to arrive.

12. Be aware, hoses containing engine coolant, diesel fuel or hydraulic hoses could fail during a fire. If this happens, hot coolant, fuel or oil could possibly be ignited by the fire.

13. If possible a dry chemical fire extinguisher or fire suppression system** should be used first to fight a machine fire. Then immediately afterwards use the pressurized water hose supplied with the machine (if applicable) or a pressurized water extinguisher (if available). A fire suppressed by dry chemical may re-ignite from the heat retained by any debris or hot machine components in the area. The water will cool the area, reducing the chances of re-ignition.

• Use the PASS method. This is the most effective use of a fire extinguisher.

• Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being pressed. Break the plastic seal as the pin is pulled.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A MACHINE FIRE OCCURS

• Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Do not aim the nozzle at the flames. In order to put out the fire, you must extinguish the fuel, not the flames. Hose nozzles are often clipped to the extinguisher body. Release the hose before taking aim.

If operating the machine when a fire occurs: 1. Lower all working attachments to the ground.

2. Turn OFF the engine.

3. Activate the fire suppression system**.

4. Radio or call for help. Be certain to report a fire immediately.

• Squeeze the handle to release the pressurized extinguishing agent. The handle can be released at any time to stop the discharge.

5. Exit the machine taking fire extinguisher and pressurized water system hose (if applicable) with you.

• Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until the fire is completely out or the fire extinguisher is empty.

6. You must ensure your own personal safety and the safety of anyone that may be in the area, at all times. Approach any fire with extreme caution. All fires can be very dangerous and life threatening.

7. Only if you can safely do so, turn OFF the battery disconnect switch.

• Make sure the fire detection system* or the fire suppression system** is properly serviced and in working order (if applicable).

• All extinguishers used in fighting the fire must be replaced or recharged.

• Notify your equipment dealer and/or Tigercat Industries Inc. by completing an incident report, Tigercat form number 5101.

• Only if you can safely do so, open the access panels to the machine in the area of the fire.

• Failing all attempts to access the machine compartment, discharge the extinguisher through the mesh or any available openings on the machine.

*NOTE: Fire detection systems are offered by Tigercat as an optional installation on some Tigercat product lines. • Make sure the machine and all components have cooled down sufficiently after a fire to prevent re-ignition from occurring.

• Remain with the machine until help arrives.

DRY CHEMICAL CLEANUP PROCEDURES

In areas exposed to heat during the fire, the dry chemical powder will melt forming a coating that cakes or crusts on all surfaces. To break down the caked dry chemical, spray or wash these areas with a 50/50 mixture of hot water and Isopropyl alcohol.

Allow this mixture to stand in place for several minutes. The caked dry chemical when exposed to moisture is also mildly acidic. Therefore when the break down procedure has been completed, follow this immediately with the neutralizing procedure as described in step 2.described in step 2.

Both ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems discharge a chemical powder to extinguish the fire. The chemical makeup and the small particle size of the powder as well as the force of the discharge all contribute to the fire fighting capability.

These same characteristics also permit the powder to penetrate into and fully cover all components in the vicinity of the discharge.

The following are recommendations for the cleanup and neutralizing of areas exposed to dry chemical powder: NOTE: Workers performing this work should wear protective clothing, safety goggles and a fine particle dust mask to minimize their personal exposure to the dry chemical powder.

• All electrical systems must be completely deenergized prior to any cleanup.

• In areas of the machine that remained cool and dry during the fire, the dry chemical will stay in powder form. Be certain to clean these areas immediately to prevent any settled residual powder from coming into contact with moisture whether through direct contact or humidity in the air. Remove the powder residue by blowing off with air, sweeping, dusting or vacuuming using a HEPA filter capable of trapping the small dry chemical particles. Then wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth.

• In areas exposed to moisture, the dry chemical powder will combine with water to form a mildly acidic paste.

NOTE: All surfaces covered by this dry chemical paste including electrical contacts are vulnerable to corrosive attack.

To neutralize the acidic paste on large surfaces, spray or wash these areas with a mixture of three parts hot water to one part baking soda. Allow this mixture to stand for several minutes before rinsing with warm water. Wash the area with a mild soap and water solution. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Blow-dry to remove all residual water. Cleaning of electrical contacts should be done using an electrical contact cleaner that has no flash or fire point and is non-corrosive and non-conductive such as CRC Contact Cleaner 2000.

This label informs you that before starting any service work you must turn the machine’s engine off, remove the key, and consult the operator’s manual and service manual for proper service procedures. Operating, servicing or making machine adjustments without fully understanding how the machine works can result in damage to the machinery, serious injury or death. Only trained and qualified personnel should service this equipment.

This label informs you that before operating this head, CAREFULLY read and understand the operator’s manual completely. Observe the instructions and safety rules. If an operator does not follow instructions and safety rules, they expose themselves as well as any bystanders to unnecessary hazards. Keep the manual in a safe and easily accessible location for future reference.

There is one of these labels located on the harvesting head, on the side of the main frame. Only trained and qualified personnel should operate this equipment.

Two tilt frame lock bolts are provided. There is one located on either side of the head. The locking bolts are used to lock the head to the tilt frame in one of two positions. One is in an upright (vertical) position for lubrication and service. The other is a down (horizontal) position for access to the hydraulic control valves and components attached to the back of the head.

This label informs you of the storage location for the tilt frame lock bolt. Always store the tilt frame lock bolts in their storage locations while operating the harvesting head for easy access when they are required.

During operation objects can be thrown or ejected at high speed and can travel long distances. Ejection of chain saw parts or other objects can cause serious injury or death.

NEVER operate or position the head with the chain saw bars in line with any bystanders, other machines or facing towards the operator’s cab.

Orient the bar and chain so high velocity parts are thrown away from any bystanders and equipment.

ALWAYS follow chain manufacturer’s guidelines for proper use and maintenance.

This label informs you of the cutting hazard that exists when operating the chain saws on this harvesting head.

KEEP CLEAR of the chain saws to avoid serious injury or death. NEVER stand or work in the cutting direction of the chain saws unless the engine and head computer are turned off. Ensure all personnel are at least 500 feet (152 meters) away while the engine is running. There are either two or four of these labels located on the harvesting head depending on the number of chain saws, one on each side of the saw housing(s).

ALWAYS be aware of the location of other machines and personnel who are working in the harvesting area and be prepared to stop operations if they enter your working area without warning. Be prepared for this potential and take appropriate action if required!

This label is located inside the cab in full view of the operator. In the case that this harvesting head is purchased “loose” without a machine, one of these labels will be sent along with the head to be affixed to the inside of the cab at a future date.

This label indicates the location of each FIRE EXTINGUISHER ACCESS HOLE. The label is installed on each fire extinguisher hole on the engine door, pump compartment door and L.H. service door.

This label advises operator's of the following: Read understand and follow the FIRE PREVENTION guidelines in this manual. These guidelines provide all the necessary action required to preventing fires on this machine. DO NOT OPERATE THIS MACHINE until you have read these instructions and have performed any necessary maintenance required that will prevent the potential of a fire from starting on this machine.

It is also important to note that fire prevention inspections and maintenance MUST BE PERFORMED FREQUENTLY (several times per day). A clean combustible free machine as well as frequent inspections of the exhaust components, hydraulic hoses and electrical cables and performing any necessary repairs immediately will help prevent fires.

• Do not assume that visitors and other workers are aware of harvesting head dangers.

CONTROL SYSTEM COMPONENTS

4. PRINTER This is an optional device for typically printing harvesting related details. The printer is located in the cab to the right of the operator’s seat. This printer connects to the main controller through one of the USB ports.

1. CAB ELECTRICAL CONTROL BOX

The electrical control box mounted on the cab wall behind the operator’s seat houses the main controller and the joystick input module.

The electrical terminal assembly (A) contains fuses for various circuits, and wiring connections for the main controller and joystick modules.

5. CONTROL HANDLES Two control handles are used for operator control of machine and harvesting head functions. Control handles and button arrangement vary depending on option selected, see CONTROL HANDLES in this section.

There are two primary switches located on the electrical control box. A red locking switch (B) on the top left of the box, and a black switch with a green LED (C) on the bottom right of the box. The red locking switch (B) is a service disconnect which must not be switched unless the system has been shut down for over 90 seconds and only power # 8 LED on the main controller is on. The only case for switching the service disconnect is when welding work is required or for long term storage the switch will isolate the valuable measuring system components. The black switch (C) controls initialization of the system and display. The head modules are only active when the carrier pilot system is active.

6. D5 PRIO DISPLAY The computer display is located in the cab typically on the LH side facing the operator. It has a multifunction colour display with touch screen functionality.

IMPORTANT !

If welding must be done, fully shut down the Tigercat D5 measuring system. This includes turning the main system switch off, then after 90 seconds, turn the red service disconnect switch off. Failure to follow this procedure will result in irreparable damage to valuable measuring system components.

This computer display is located in the cab and is used with the PC/optimization operating system.It has a multifunction colour display with touch screen functionality.

7. HEAD ELECTRICAL BOX The head electrical box is located on the harvesting head and contains fuses for each module and a terminal strip for making connections between the modules and solenoids on the head.

The main controller is the computer for the complete Tigercat D5 measuring system. The main controller communicates with all other modules via the CANBUS, interfaces with the display via DVI and USB cables, and has USB interface for the printer, license key, and memory stick transfers.

The head controller has inputs for all head sensors and communicates with the main controller and head modules via the CAN 1.

TILT UP Operates the tilt up function when the button is pressed.

If the Tilt Up button is pressed for less than the Tilt Up Time then the tilt will return to float. If the button is pressed for longer than the Tilt Up Time, the tilt will then lock in the tilted up position.

When this button is pressed, the tilt up will activate as long as the button is pressed. When released, the tilt will be locked in that position. Useful for positioning the head in intermediate positions. Often this button assignment is a double-click of the tilt up button.

Used to operate the left hand feed when handling multiple stems.

TILT DOWN Tilts the head down as long as the button is pressed and also has a delay off set by the setting Tilt Down Time.

After tilting down, the head will revert to tilt float.

TILT FLOAT When pressed, the head will go into tilt float allowing the head to swing freely within the tilt frame.

FEED FORWARD Press to manually feed the tree forward. Pressing the Feed Forward button at any point during an automatic feeding cycle will cancel the automatic feeding and switch to manual control. This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Operating > Feed Start Keys), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM - TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, a short tap of the button will start the automatic feeding. A long press will feed manually.

TOP MEASURE (IF EQUIPPED) Press to toggle the selected saw between the main saw and top saw. If a feeding cycle is in progress, the system will feed the length to the selected saw.

This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Operating > Feed Start Keys), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM - TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, pressing the button will select the top saw and start the automatic feeding.

TOP SAW CUT (IF EQUIPPED) Used to operate manual or automatic sawing for the top saw, depending on various saw settings.

This button function is used to stop or interrupt any automatic functions such as feeding.

SHIFT KEY

SPECIES #

The shift button allows multiple functions to be assigned to the same button. For example, a function can be assigned to button ‘A’ and a different function is assigned if the Shift Key and ‘A’ are pressed together. Works similar to a computer keyboard.

Selects a specific species number, This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Operating > Feed Start Keys), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM - TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, pressing the button will select the species and start the automatic feeding.

RESET Resets the length and restarts measurement of the tree.

FIND END Press this button to indicate that the system should operate the ‘Find End’ feature at the next start of automatic feeding. This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Other > Find End Button as Start Key), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM - TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, pressing the button will start automatic feeding. The system will operate the find end function, then proceed to feed to the selected length.

NEAREST Pressing this button during automatic feeding will override the current selected length and feed the tree to the nearest length.

PRESET + Selects the next higher priority preset selection (generally longer length). This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Operating > Feed Start Keys), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM - TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, pressing the button will select the next higher preset and start the automatic feeding.

PRESET Selects the next lower priority preset selection (generally shorter length). This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Operating > Feed Start Keys), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, pressing the button will select the next lower preset and start the automatic feeding.

PRESET # Selects a specific preset length number. This overrides the current selected preset and only applies to the current feeding cycle (reset when a saw cut is made).

This button can also be assigned as a start key (see Settings > Operating > Feed Start Keys), refer to the MEASURING AND CONTROL SYSTEM - TIGERCAT D5 PRIO OPERATORS MANUAL. In this case, pressing the button will select the preset and start the automatic feeding.

OPERATION The efficient operation of the harvesting head depends on practice and experience. The head will not operate to its full potential if the adjustments are not correct and/or knife edges and saw chain are dull.

PLANNING THE HARVESTING AREA

Controls and Operation Planned, regular site meetings need to be held to ensure the conditions of the plan are being upheld and to address possible aspects encountered not already accommodated in the plan.

PREPARATION It is mandatory that the operator has had experience operating the harvester prior to felling trees.

A

Planning plays a decisive role in mechanized timber harvesting. Successful planning utilizes previous experience.

Many aspects are considered when formulating a harvesting plan. These include terrain (area to be harvested), ground conditions, water ways, soil type, erosion control, species, stem density, stem form, under growth, access, roading, boundaries, historic sites, environmental areas, transmission lines, gas lines, public access ways, storage sites, landings, equipment to be used, staff ability and haul distance.

These factors all determine the way a plan is formulated to gain a safe, productive and profitable harvesting operation.

Site inspection is necessary by operators before harvesting operations commence. Ensure all members of the harvesting team are aware of the constraints, hazards and requirements of this harvesting operation.

CLEAR CUT HARVESTING FELLING

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head THE FELLING PROCESS The direction of fall is determined by the position of the head on the tree. The tree should fall in a direct line with the hanging bracket.

Position the head on the tree as low as possible while gaining the correct felling angle. This requires the head to be fully opened, both delimber and drive wheels in the tilt up position, and close the delimber and drive wheels once the selected tree is positioned in the opening.

A slight amount of pressure is then applied to the tree to ensure the saw will not jam as the tree is being cut and also assist with tree fall direction.

When the saw is activated the “Head Close” circuits will operate to ensure the tree does not move within the head while cutting is taking place. A visual indication of the cutting taking place is the chips exiting the saw box area. Keep the saw activated until the tree is ready to be dropped. Stop the saw, which automatically retracts, and apply force to the tree in the direction of fall.

The felling stage in clear cut harvesting influences the whole operation.

The felling direction and log presentation for extraction requires careful attention in order to reduce breakage and to be able to present a well delimbed stem for quick extraction or further processing.

To reduce breakage and provide a larger working radius it is preferable to fall trees against standing trees to cushion the fall and reduce the amount of under growth around the base of trees to be felled. This is achieved by falling the tree just off center to a standing tree preventing the falling tree from becoming “hung up”.

When felling, tree control is reduced if the head is at full reach. Optimum felling is achieved using the head as close as possible to approximately 3/4 of maximum reach. During these manoeuvres the machine chassis/ undercarriage should remain stationary at all times.

Should the machine chassis/undercarriage become unstable a reduction in reach should be applied immediately. Ensure the tracks are on a firm footing at all times, avoiding locating one or both tracks on stumps which could allow the machine to move unexpectedly during manoeuvres.

Positioning of the machine chassis/undercarriage will determine the working envelope. Higher production is achieved through maximum ground coverage with minimal track movement. This also reduces environmental impact.

It is preferable an operator has had manual falling experience, which allows a better understanding of felling techniques.

DELIMBING

FALLING AND DELIMBING

At this point the tree is ready to be delimbed which involves slewing the base and driving the stem through the head while obtaining the correct direction of the butt.

Once the butt has been positioned the remainder of the tree can be delimbed by using the momentum of the base to assist the delimbing effort of the head.

To improve delimbing it is beneficial to feed the tree through while falling, allowing the weight of the tree to assist with the delimbing operation.

While the tree is falling, the drive wheels can be activated to allow the tree to pass through the head and delimb. Once the drive wheels are activated, the knife arms and feed wheel arms will automatically go into proportional clamp mode allowing the tree to pass through the head.

Ensure the head is kept to a minimum height in this operation to reduce the impact on the head from the falling tree.

To improve delimbing performance slew into the feed direction.

WARNING Due to variations in tree weight, the operator must be aware of the machine manufacturers specifications in regard to the ability of the machine to safely handle the tree being processed.

Care must be exercised when swinging stems around not to allow contact with the operator’s structure and be aware of tail swing which could damage other trees or stems.

• Ensure the delimbing knives are kept sharp and in form to reduce the effort required to remove limbs.

• The delimbing procedure is about balance and stem control, which when perfected gives excellent results and increases production.

• Do NOT feed the stem through the head while the stem is facing the operator’s structure.

It is recommended to delimb the stem with head just high enough to position the butt and clear objects. Operating the head too high will result in loss of control of the stem and also stem breakage.

Controls and Operation

THINNING TECHNIQUES Falling in thinning requires the harvester to be placed approximately 2 meters up the tree and then driven down the stem. This allows the back knives to provide a clear area for the harvester to grip when felling.

In order to gain the maximum merchantable volume and reduce bark damage to remaining trees, different methods are used, cut to length or full length, within the stand.

Tigercat TH570 Harvesting Head FULL TREE THINNING Again the procedure is similar to the above.

This system is used in conjunction with skidding extraction.

The path way is harvested in the same manner at the same spacing.

CUT TO LENGTH AT THE STUMP A path of stems approximately 4 meters wide is felled to allow access to both the harvester and the forwarder.

While this path is being harvested stems both sides of the path are harvested and processed.

More care is required when felling to correctly position the stem allowing processing without damage to standing stems due to the longer lengths being handled.

Stems are stacked either side ready to be removed by the forwarder.

• Decide where to stack the stems.

Fell the tree on the left and process it to the left or right.

Process the stems over the path and lay the stems on the opposite side. This method results in the harvesting slash being left on the path, thus providing a load bearing surface for both harvester and forwarder and a clean area for the stacks.

The major differences being the direction the processed stems are stock piled allowing extraction with minimal damage. It is not always possible to process over the path way, so harvesting slash is distributed over the complete swath.

Stems need to be processed and piled with the butts placed outwards providing easy access for extraction.

SELECT THINNING Select thinning depends on the finished crop stocking levels and area available to manoeuvre a machine between trees.

This method also requires a reduction in paths cut from a block, while still providing access for extraction.

With this system trees can be felled consecutively left and right to reduce the amount of machine movement, ensuring stacks are positioned so that the forwarder can easily load.

When stacking use colour marking and separate piles to identify grades which will assist the loading by the forwarder.

CUTTING GENERAL Trees with a heavy forward lean can be fallen by placing multiple front cuts to create a larger area to compress while back cutting.

Larger trees should be released once the tree is falling.

This will avoid harvester damage.

Tops of hills and uneven ground can also cause the tree to swing up causing the machine to lift or harvester damage.

Releasing trees as they are falling into another standing tree can sometimes allow the tree to roll off.

If the fallen tree is hung up in another be careful when pulling it down. Watch that the holding tree is not being pulled in same direction. If so, pushing the tree will release the tree away from machine.

USING THE MAIN SAW UNIT Prior to using the chainsaw keep in mind -

Controls and Operation A side tear along the tree may stop the chainsaw from returning if it is not cut on the downward pass. The cut should be made past this tear. Stems should be supported when cutting, as this will avoid splitting.

A small amount of upward lift may be required as the chainsaw completes the cut. This will keep the cut open and avoid chain stall.

Care should be taken that the end of the bar does not cut into the ground when completing a cut. The chainsaw may also cut into another log damaging the log or if the harvester head is moving, may result in damage to the bar and chain.

USING THE TOPPING SAW UNIT (IF EQUIPPED) The topping saw is designed for cutting small diameter tops off trees. The tip of the chainsaw can be pinched if larger diameters are attempted. The topping saw chain can be derailed if branches or the end of the log is under load. It is advised that the topping saw bar be visible when cutting.

• View of the chainsaw bar if possible.

• The head will fall over when saw is activated.

• Protection of boom hydraulics and cab.

• How the tree is positioned for delimbing.

While cutting, push in the felling direction avoiding upward pressure. As the cutting unit completes the cut the saw will increase in speed and the bark chips maybe visible.

Once the cut is completed, release the saw button and the saw will return automatically.

When falling it is possible to jam the saw. Stop the activation of the saw and slowly lift the head supporting the weight of the tree. The lifting distance should be just enough to release the saw.

Check that the saw has returned by the saw home indicator before moving the tree too far.

Ensure the tree is clamped before the chainsaw is activated. A loose tree may move after the chainsaw begins the cut, this may derail the chain or stop the chainsaw from cutting.

PROCESSING GENERAL • When working on confined landings ensure safety procedures and practices are in place and adhered too.

• DO NOT process toward the cab.

Once the tree has been delimbed it is ready to be crosscut into desired lengths.

Depending on log size when cross cutting it will be necessary to support the large end.

If a multiple of log grades is being processed it is necessary to ensure planning has taken place to ensure placement of various grades for easy identification during extraction operations.

MEASURING Inspect butt of tree and recut if needed.

When using the find end function, length accuracy will be poor for the following reasons: • Tree is crooked • The butt is not cut square • Sensor is dirty • Tree is too small • Sensor gets a false signal from bark or debris • Sensor gets reflections if the head is too close to the ground or other objects For best results use the saw to cut the butt square if accuracy is critical.

Avoid reversing when measuring; returning to the end of log and starting again will give more accurate length measuring.

Observing of the diameter readout and the length controller is essential before activating the chainsaw.

Calibration checks should be carried out at regular intervals if measuring equipment is being used.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

In some cases several quarter cuts will prevent the tree snapping off too soon. This method is used on large butt flares, heavy leaners, badly swept butts, multi leaders, and any other situation the operator requires more control in the felling procedure to prevent damaging the tree or machine.

In instances where crutched trees, multi leaders and other abnormalities are encountered during falling, delimbing and processing, it may be necessary to use special techniques to be able to safely handle stems, with minimal damage to the machine

FALLING MULTILEADERS

USE OF DOUBLE CUTS

Crutched trees can be cut either at a point where both separate, or if one side is of small diameter it can be lifted until the crutch splits.

Double cuts allow the tree to fall freely and minimises butt damage. It is recommended that larger diameter trees be double cut to prevent bar damage.

Crutched trees at the base may need to be fallen separately if the split line is close to the ground.

Two cuts, front (or compression) cut and then a back (or release) cut are advised for larger trees. Using the two cut method means the top or tip of the cutting unit is not travelling over the direction of fall, which can cause damage if the tree moves forward and down.

Position the harvester to the front or the desired direction of fall of the tree. Make the front cut with no side or upward pressure. The cut should finish when the cut is square with the direction of fall. The back cut should be higher than the front cut, this will allow the tree to fall to the front cut level and avoid splitting wood towards the cutting unit. According to the lean and size of tree, a slight side and upward pressure should be applied to the tree as it being cut.

The aligning of the two cuts is important as there may be holding wood left on either side, which may cause damage to the saw unit if they are not parallel. Over cutting the back cut with the front cut can also stop the cutting unit from returning if the tree begins to fall.

QUARTER CUTTING This method is used on various occasions to gain better control when felling. Use a saw cut placed at the base of the tree in the direction of fall approximately quarter of the diameter into the tree. The head is then moved to the back of the tree ready for falling.

Carefully assess the situation and identify whether the tree is sound at the base in which case the possibility of falling complete could be considered.

If signs of rot (1) exist it identifies the need to remove each leader individually. This is done in a conventional manner except at a greater height.

Do not over cut the tree. Always work on one tree at the time and do not leave trees quarter cut.

Ensure the back cut is placed higher in the tree than the quarter cut - approximately quarter of the tree diameter.

When placing these cuts ensure both cuts are parallel to ensure a hinge affect is achieved otherwise loss of control will result.

Caution must be exercised to ensure leaders do not break away unexpectedly. When cutting leaders, ensure that the saw is not pinched between leaders.

FALLING ON HILLSIDES Falling trees on hillsides may expose the saw to dirt and debris on the uphill side of trees.

When falling on hilly terrain ensure the harvester is positioned correctly and not allowing the bar tip to enter the ground on the uphill side of the tree.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

FIRE PREVENTION

NEW MACHINE MAINTENANCE

Fire can result in a machine loss which can be financially devastating.

INITIAL PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION Perform the initial pre-delivery inspection using Tigercat form numbers 5343: PDI and 125 hour inspection report.

FIRST 125 HOUR INSPECTION AND SERVICE REPORT With the owner’s mechanic present, perform an inspection and service according to the Tigercat form numbers 5343: PDI and 125 hour inspection report.

This must be completed within the first 125 hour time frame.

IMPORTANT! To qualify for continued warranty, this report must be completed and returned to Tigercat Industries Inc. Warranty department.

• Clean around filler caps before checking or adding fluids.

1. Pine needles and bark when allowed to accumulate, form a fuel source that when ignited is extremely difficult to extinguish. A thorough program of regular cleaning and washing will reduce the possibility of a fire starting. In the event a fire does start, the regular cleaning program will improve the chances of successfully extinguishing a fire.

2. Pay close attention to wiring and plumbing routing during maintenance, ensure that ALL wiring harnesses or hydraulic hoses are properly restrained and clamped to prevent damage from chaffing.

3. In case of fire lower the boom system to the ground and shut off the engine before discharging the fire suppression system.

Also refer to FIRE PREVENTION in SECTION 1 of THIS MANUAL for additional information.

• Clean around hydraulic fittings before breaking connection. Plug or cap immediately.

• Clean up all spills immediately.

• Always use clean oil and containers.

• Drain dirty oil while still warm.

• Do not exceed recommended fluid levels.

• Always have a fire extinguisher at hand.

• Tilt cylinders; 4 fittings – purge

FREQUENTLY

• Link and rotator; 6 fittings - NOTE: Rotate head 45° and grease till purged. Repeat until rotator is greased at all points along path.

• Check saw bar, chain and sprocket for wear, damage, sharpness of chain, proper tension, integrity of mounting hardware etc. Replace saw bar, chain and or sprocket as necessary. Repair or replace any damaged saw component mounts or hardware.

• Lubricate hose swivel; 3 fittings - 1 shot each • Floating front knife option; 4 fittings - purge • Manually extend saw bar and give 4 shots each at 0, 30, 60, and 90 degree.

• Check chain lubrication oil level. Refill as necessary.

EVERY 40 HOURS WEEKLY

• Clean the harvesting head. Remove all debris, dirt, ice, packed snow etc.

PERFORM

EVERY 8 HOURS

• 8 HOUR maintenance CHECK

• Fill chain lubrication reservoir. Clean the area around the reservoir cap of all debris and dirt and remove the cap. Fill completely with chain oil per the recommended chain oil chart.

• Knife arm and wheel arm pivot pins and retaining bolts.

• Condition of drive wheel, hub nuts and mounting bolts.

CHECK • For loose nuts, bolts and fittings and fix as required.

• Inspect the frame and arms for cracks or excessive wear. Replace components and sharpen knives as required.

• Saw chain condition. Inspect saw chain for excessive wear, cracking, or broken teeth. Replace chain if necessary.

EVERY 125 HOURS:

• Knife arms for excessive wear, cracking, or broken parts. Repair or replace components if necessary.

PERFORM • 8 HOUR maintenance

• Conduct visual inspection of the measuring equipment and sensors. Ensure they are clean, clear and free of obstacles.

• 40 HOUR maintenance CHECK

• Conduct overall visual inspection. Check valves, motors, cylinders, and all hoses for leaks or wear.

Tighten or replace fittings and hoses as necessary.

• Torque tightening points as per new machine maintenance

CLEAN

VISUALLY CHECK FOR DAMAGE TO • Main frame.

• Remove potentially damaging limbs or sticks.

• Tilt frame.

LUBRICATE ALL GREASE FITTINGS

The four-bolt port is simply a circular opening (flow passage) surrounded by four tapped holes in a certain pattern for acceptance of the flange clamping bolts. The flat surface of the port compresses the O-ring contained in the groove in the flange head when the clamp bolts are torqued. In some instances, the groove is in the port and not in the flange head. The bolts, through the clamp halves, clamp down the flange head onto the flat surface of the port compressing and trapping the O-ring in the groove and leaving no gap for it to extrude under pressure. The hydraulic pressure is thus sealed by the compressed O-ring as long as the bolts are tightened enough to maintain solid metal to metal contact between the flange head at the outside diameter of the O-ring and the top of the port.

Operational Safety •

Check the unit for damages at the beginning of each shift.

•

Make sure that the hydraulic pressure in the grapple cylinder is adjusted according to the specifications. If the pressure is too high, the unit will be overloaded, which could cause a structural failure, resulting in injury and/or property damage.

•

When operating this equipment ensure all unauthorized persons remain at least 90 meters clear of the machine.

•

The operator must immediately evict unauthorized persons who are in the danger zone or are heading towards the danger zone

•

Training or demonstration of this equipment should be performed from an operator´s cab approved by national regulations. Observers should always remain at least 90 meters.

•

Keep all windows and doors securly closed when operating.

Chain shot hazard Operator and bystander safety Because of the high speeds, high stress, heavy loads, wear factors and varying levels of repair and maintenance given to saw-chain based machines, there is a possibility that chain or chain pieces can be thrown from the machine at high speed and enormous energy. Operators and bystanders are exposed to a risk of serious injury.

Machines should be designed with appropriate guards and shields, and care should be taken to minimize the exposure of users and bystanders to the cutting plane of the saw.

There is risk of serious injury or death to machine operators and bystanders from “Chain Shot”, which is the high-speed ejection of chain parts that can occur in the event of a derailed or a broken chain. For maximum protection, machines should be equipped with an energy-absorbing chain shot guard.

•

Always use High Speed saw chains with 3/4” pitch saw units.

Maintenance safety •

The machine's condition must be checked regularly, daily inspections shall be performed and any deficiencies must be corrected. The machine shall be maintained in such condition that the operator or other persons are not exposed to danger or accidents.

•

Never commit any service on the equipment without proper knowledge. All service and repairs in electrical and hydaulical systems should be carried out by qualified personnel only.

•

Repair any damages immediate when discovered.

Do not use the equipment until any damages are rectified.

•

Before performing any maintenance or service work, lower the unit to the ground and shut off the engine. Turn off any master shut-offs and do not allow personnel in the cab.

•

When working on the saw chain always ensure the engine is shut off and wear safety gloves to prevent injuries. Remove the saw chain when making any adjustments or servicing the saw unit

•

Use safety glasses and protective gloves when servicing the equipment. Hydraulic oil or lubricants in contact with skin or eyes may cause irritations or allergies.

•

Use hard hat and safety boots when servicing the equipment. Leakage of hydraulic oil or lubricants will increase the risk of slipping or falling.

•

The unit has sharp edges. Use proper wrenches and protective gloves when working on the unit.

•

Hydraulic hoses and adapters may be pressurized even with the engine shut off. Loosen any parts with caution.

•

Always make sure that the system is depressurized before committing any service on the equipment.

•

Always secure movable parts mechanically before any hydraulic hose is loosened.

•

Never try to stop a leakage in the hydraulic system with you hand. Pressurized hydraulic oil can be injected under the skin and cause death or severe damage.

Welding In case of a structural repair of the equipment, when welding may be needed, consult the dealer for recommended instructions.

When welding on the equipment the following steps must be taken: •

Make sure that fire-extinguishing equipment is available.

•

Clean the area around the welding area to eliminate any fire hazard.

•

Connect the ground wire so the welding current does not pass over any bushings.

•

Place the ground wire as close to the welding area as possible.

•

When welding close to bushings, dissassemble the bushings asthey are made of a plastic compound-material which high temperatures may damage.

Modifying the equipment It is not approved to: •

Modify the equipment without the consent of HULTDIN SYSTEM AB.

•

Alter the function of the equipment without the consent of HULTDIN SYSTEM AB.

•

Use spare parts other than original HULTDINS parts.

P RODUCT DESCRIPTION

Product description SuperCut 100 is a complete unit with integrated feed cylinder, well protected from external damage. It has been designed for use with Parker or Bucher hydraulic motors.

SuperCut 100 is equipped with automatic hydraulic chain tensioning and an integrated lubrication pump that distributes lubricant to the chain during the complete sawing operation.

The lubrication pump delivers a maximum volume of 6.5 ml and the process can easily be adapted to specific lubricating requirements with a number of different pumps. All the lubrication oils found on the market can be used.

The SuperCut 100 can be equipped with a saw home detector sensor and a cut control kit as options. The cut control kit is used in combination with a computerized bucking device and limits the angle to which the saw bar is fed out in relationship to the diameter of the tree.

Labeling The SuperCut 100 is labeled with serial number according to the following figure.See Fig. 2.

F UNCTIONAL DE SCRIP TION

Functional description

swivel in the saw motor (6) and finally through the bar holder to the saw bar (8).

The purpose of the pressure relief valve (9) is to limit the pressure in the lubrication circuit to prevent damages on the sviwel seals in the saw motor. The cracking pressure of the valve is between 3.0 to 5.0 MPa (435 to 725 Psi).

Chain lubrication system The SuperCut 100 is equipped with a lubrication oil pump integrated with the feed out cylinder. The lubrication oil pump supplies oil via a piston operation to the saw chain during the entire feed out process.

The supply of oil is proportional, which means that the volume of oil supplied depends on how much the saw bar is fed out.

The lubrication oil pump is fed with oil from the oil tank (1), trough the inlet check valve (2) and to a reservoar in the piston rod (3).

By using different lubrication oil pumps, the amount of oil supplied to the saw bar can be varied depending on different lubrication requirements.

When the saw bar (8) is fed out, the oil goes through the outlet check valve (4), via a hydraulic hose (5) to the

Installation and startup Fasteners The SuperCut 100 is mounted to e.g a saw box with 13 M10 fasteners with min. grade 10.9. The length of these fasteners must be adjusted so that they don’t exceed the thickness of the saw box with more than 12 mm. See Fig. 9.

It is of extreme importance that fasteners with the correct length are used. To long fasteners may cause damage or malfunction of the saw unit.

Bleeding the chain tension system 1. Lower the grapple saw to the ground and shut off the engine.

2. Open the bleeder valve (1) 1 - 2 turns.

Use the check valve key (2) P/N 0696011 3. Push in the bar holder (3) completely and close the bleeder valve (1).

4. Start the engine and activate the saw function 4-5 times.

5. Repeat step 1-3.

6. Repeat this process after 30-60 minutes of operation.

Important!

Always bleed the system if there is any suspicion of air having entered the system, e.g. after replacing a hose or other component.

Procedures Replacing saw chain The first signs of a worn chain are abnormally long saw times and blue smoke emerging from the cut. When replacing the saw chain we recommend the following method.

Important!

When working on the saw chain always ensure the engine is shut off and wear safety gloves to prevent injuries. Remove the saw chain when making any adjustments or servicing the saw unit.

1. Place the unit steady on the ground with the saw unit facing up (when possible).

2. Depressurize the chain tension system by pushing in the pilot valve (1).

3. Retract the bar holder.

•

alt. 1 Slowly pull out the saw chain, until the locking pin (2) is possible to push in.

•

alt. 2 If the saw chain is missing. Slowly retract the bar holder by hand, until the locking pin (2) is possible to push in.

4. Lock the bar holder in place by pushing in the locking pin (2).

5. Remove the saw chain.

6. Make sure that the drive sprocket isn’t worn or damaged.

Replace if necessary. See Replacing drive sprocket 7. Install the new saw chain and slowly pull out the chain from the saw bar until the locking pin (2) releases.

8. Operate the saw carefully a few times to secure the pressure in the chain tensioner. If after replacing a chain it repeatedly jumps off the saw bar, you may have to bleed the system. See Bleeding the chain tension system

4. Disassemble the guide screws (1) and remove the bar holder(2) from the tension device.

5. Inspect and clean the grooves(3) from any debris.

6. Install the bar holder (2) into the tension device. Fit the guide screws (1) into the grooves (3) and tighten the guide screws (1). Torque 20 Nm 7. Install the saw bar. See Replacing saw bar.

Lubrication The saw unit should be lubricated every 8 to 200 hours of operation depending on the conditions that the unit is working under. The unit has 2 lubrication points as shown here. See Fig. 13.

Note!Use a mineral oil based grease thickened with, or mixable with a lithium soap. The grease should be classified as L-XCCIB2 according to ISO 6743-9.

Molybdendisulfid content max 3 %. Base fluid viscosity 170 to 220 cSt at 40°C. NLGI class 1-2.

3URGXFW GHVFULSWLRQ Together with its range of accessories, Hultdins patented 6XSHU&XW saw unit is a comprehensive alternative for all applications with demands on functionality, reliability, service-friendliness, economy and the environment.

/DEHOLQJ

is a complete unit with integrated feed cylinder, well protected from external damage. It has been designed for use with hydraulic motors of the type VOAC F11 - 10 or, alternatively, F11 - 19. The saw motor bracket is assembled in ball bearings in the saw unit so that the hydraulic motor is stationary when the saw is fed out. The saw bar is returned hydraulically with oil.

The feed out angel is identified with grooves on the feed out cylinder, 1 groove for 80° feed out and 2 grooves for 95° feed out angle.

6XSHU&XW

The 6XSHU&XW is labeled with serial number according to the following figure.6HH )LJ

In its standard version, the 6XSHU&XW is equipped with automatic hydraulic chain tensioning and an integrated lubrication pump that distributes lubricant to the chain during the complete sawing operation.

The lubrication pump delivers a maximum volume of 6.5 ml and the process can easily be adapted to specific lubricating requirements with a number of different pumps. All the lubrication oils found on the market can be used.

Grooves

All this in combination gives good saw bar, chain and oil economy.

With the accessories that are available for the 6XSHU&XW , you can easily design an integrated unit consisting of the saw unit, saw motor manifold, pressure regulating valve kit and colour marking kit.

Serial Number

Air and lubrication oil tanks are available as extra accessories, and the 6XSHU&XW can be equipped with a saw home detector sensor and a cut control kit as options.

The cut control kit is used in combination with a computerized bucking device and limits the angle to which the saw bar is fed out in relationship to the diameter of the tree.

6XSHU&XW

The 6XSHU&XW is made up of one Saw stand (1) which contains a 4-point bearing with a gear drive, a feed out cylinder (5) with integrated rack and proportional lubrication oil pump (6). The feed out cylinder (5) is equipped with hydraulic dampening for “Soft Stop” to eliminate shock loads. The piston stops the hydraulic flow by passing the entry hole (A) in the connection flange (7).

The 6XSHU&XW can be supplied with two different saw motors , VOAC F11-10 or F11-19 (4).

The 6XSHU&XW is equipped with a patented automatic chain tension system, made up of a tensioning device (2) on which the bar holder (3) is attached. Optional accessories such as cut-control device and colour marking kits are easy to install.

The 6XSHU&XW saw unit is designed for hydraulic saw bar retraction.

The feed out cylinder (5) and the bar holder (3) are not on the same level, which eliminates problems with snow packing or other debris. The saw bar feed out angle (B) is 95°, or 80° as an option.

The tension device(2) can easily be relocated in 9.23° steps for various “saw bar starting” angles, to accommodate specific attachment design requirements.

The purpose of the pressure relief valve (9) is to limit the pressure in the lubrication circuit to prevent damages on the sviwel seals in the saw motor. The cracking pressure of the valve is between 3.0 to 5.0 MPa (435 to 725 Psi).

&KDLQ OXEULFDWLRQ V\VWHP

The 6XSHU&XW is equipped with a lubrication oil pump integrated with the feed out cylinder. The lubrication oil pump supplies oil via a piston operation to the saw chain during the entire feed out process.

The supply of oil is proportional, which means that the volume of oil supplied depends on how much the saw bar is fed out.

The lubrication oil pump is fed with oil from the oil tank (1), trough the inlet check valve (2) and to a reservoar in the piston rod (3).

By using different lubrication oil pumps, the amount of oil supplied to the saw bar can be varied depending on different lubrication requirements.

When the saw bar (8) is fed out, the oil goes through the outlet check valve (4), via a hydraulic hose (5) to the

When the feed line (P) is pressurised from the saw function, a reduced pressure (2.0-2.5 MPa/290-360 PSI ) from the pressure regulating valve (3) acts on the pistons (1) and (2). The piston (1) keeps the chain tight while the pistons (2) hold the bar holder to the tensioning device when sawing is in process. When the machine is started the feed line (P) is pressurised. The pressure on the feed line have to be constant and should not range more than 0.5 MPa (7.25 Psi) from the pre-set pressure and should not cease until the machine is shut down. A reduced pressure (2.0-2.5 MPa / 290-360 PSI ) from the pressure regulating valve (3) then acts on the pistons (1) and (2). The piston (1) keeps the chain tight while the pistons (2) hold the bar holder to the tensioning device when sawing is in process.

The first signs of a worn chain are abnormally long saw times and blue smoke emerging from the cut. When replacing the saw chain we recommend the following methods.

Compress the tensioning device.

alt. 1 Slowly, by hand force, pull the chain from the saw bar until the tensioning device is compressed.

alt. 2 If there is no saw chain on the saw bar.

Slowly push the saw bar until the tensioning device is compressed.

Lock the tensioning device by pressing in the mechanical locking device(3). 6HH )LJ

Remove the saw chain.

Install new saw chain and slowly pull out the saw chain by hand until the mechanical locking device(3) disengages.

Operate the saw carefully a few times to secure the pressure in the chain tensioning device. If after replacing a chain it repeatedly jumps off the saw bar, you may have to bleed the system.6HH %OHHGLQJ FKDLQ

The purpose of the check valve is to prevent the saw chain from becoming slack from external obstructions e.g. undergrowth. If this function failures, the check valve or the spring may have to be replaced or disassembled and cleaned.

1RWH If using a normal hex key to install the check valve, this may cause the washer on the back side of the check valve to fall off and disfunction the check valve. If this happens, make sure that the machined surface of the washer is facing the check valve when reassembling. If a little grease is applied to the washer, it will stick to the check valve when reassembling. 6HH )LJ

Test the function of the check valve by pushing it with e.g a small screw driver. The washer must be able to move approx. 0.5mm.

Install the pilot valve.

Remove the old seal rings using e.g a small screw driver. Be sure to remove both the green seal rings and the o-rings.

Make sure not to damage the grooves for the seal rings.

Carefully clean the grooves for the seal rings.

Install the new o-rings.

Apply a little oil to the green seal rings before assembling.

Compress the seal rings according to the adjoining figure. 6HH )LJ

Assemble the seal rings into the grooves using the hands or a blunt tool. Be careful not to harm the seal rings as they are delicate and can easily be damaged.
