2.1. Description The vibrating drum consists of: -

The upper section with the driving aggregate, sprinkling assembly

The lower section with the vibrator, driving mechanism, and drums

-

The steering axle with the control and safety mechanism.

2.1.1.

The upper section with the driving aggregate

The upper section consists of the driving aggregate and the sprinkling assembly of both drums. The driving aggregate consists of the engine (1) and the gearbox (2). The driving aggregate is placed on a spring-loaded engine platform connected by means of rubberized metal pieces to the side-frame (4).

The engine (1) is mounted on the platform and includes the fuel tank, suction manifold with an air-filter and cartridge, and exhaust manifold with the muffler. Cool air is accessed from the flywheel, where a fan is installed.

The gearbox (2) is fastened to the engine platform and connected through a flexible clutch to the engine. Two shafts exit from the gearbox, one with a belt driving the vibrator exciter, the other with chain wheels to drive the drums. The gearbox has outputs for reverse drive, brake lever, vibration switch, and gear lever for working and travel speeds.

The sprinkling assembly (6) for sprinkling with water both drums when working on adhesive crush. Water is distributed by rubber and plastic hoses with jets from two tanks mounted on the engine platform.

The Driver’s Manual 2.1.2.

The lower section with the vibrator

The lower vibrating section consists of two drums (3) installed between the side frames, which are tied together by a beam. The beam carries also the vibration exciter (5).

The drums are driven by a chain from the gearbox to the pinion on the gear wheel of the drum. The vibration exciter is driven by a belt from the gearbox.

Drum (3) is welded of steel plates. The left lid of the drum houses the driven gear wheel.

The left and right side frame (4) houses the driven drums in bearings on both sides. The left side frame contains two chain wheels for the drive of the drums, pinions, and stretching chains with dampers. The chain drive is covered by an aluminum lid mounted to the left side-frame. The scrapers are mounted in front of the side-frames The vibration exciter (5) consists of a box, in which two excenters are located on two roller bearings, connected together by gearwheels. The bearings and the gearwheels are lubricated with oil in the vibrator box. The exciter is installed on the beam connecting both side-frames.

Steering axle (7)

Manually controlled steering axle consists of a beam with weights, turning bracket with a wheel, and handle, which is connected elastically to the bracket. The beam is connected to the lower section of the machine by means of rubberized metal pieces, the rear part of the beam includes the travel reverse control, vibration switch, and engine RPM control. The handle is provided with brake handle and the folding bumper of the safety device that protects the operator against being pressed to an obstacle when driving backwards.

Other parts

Controls – RPMs, drive direction, vibration switch, brake, and safety devices are controlled mechanically by pull rods.

Gears - gears are shifted by a lever on the gearbox lid.

2.2. New machine handling procedure Before a brand new machine is made operational:

• Check the machine to shipping documentation • Check whether some parts of the machine have been damaged during transport or whether any are missing.

• Inform the shipper of any discrepancies • Before operating the machine, perform complete deconversation.

• Wash the machine by a high-pressure hot water stream (steam) with common degreasing additives, and remove conservation elements.

Wash the machine and remove conservation means in a place provided with catch basins for the dirty water and conservation means.

2.3. Principal safety precautions 2.3.1.

Safety precautions while operating the machine

Safety regulations listed in the particular chapters of the technical documentation supplied with the equipment should be complemented by safety regulations applicable in the country where the equipment is being used in respect to the work organization, the process, and the personnel.

The Driver’s Manual 2.3.1.2. Operations in a hazardous area Any damage to underground cables and pipes must be reported immediately to the owner, simultaneously, steps must be taken to prevent unauthorized persons to enter the hazardous area.

The operator must not be left to work alone without being in visual or audible contact with another worker, who might offer assistance or call for help in case of an accident, unless another form of control or connection was installed.

The Driver’s Duties

• Prior to the start of operations, the driver must be acquainted with instructions contained in the documentation supplied with the equipment, particularly work safety regulations, and follow them meticulously.

The same applies to maintenance, set-up, and service personnel. Should any part of the manual be unclear, please contact the nearest dealer or the manufacturer.

• The driver shouldn’t operate the equipment, unless fully cognizant of all functions of the machine, its working and control parts, and its handling.

• The driver must obey safety markings of the machine, and keep them legible.

• The driver may start up the machine only when all personnel have cleared the area near the machine. In cluttered workplace operations may start only after a period in time absolutely needed for the clearing of the endangered area.

• During operation, the driver must adhere to work safety rules, and avoid any activity other than controlling the machine.

2.4. Environmental precautions and health regulations The operator is obligated to adhere to general health precautionary and environmental regulations, laws, and notices applicable in the area where the machine is to be used.

Health precautions

• Oil products, lacquers (including thinners) are injurious to health. Workers coming into contact with such products while operating or servicing the machine, must observe general rules of health protection, and follow safety and health directives issued by the manufacturer of such products.

We draw your attention particularly to

• The charges of individual systems of the machine and some of its assemblies become waste and risks for the environment after the machine has been discarded.

This category of waste products includes mainly –

organic and synthetic lubricants, oils, and fuel,

–

cleaning and conserving materials

–

all discarded filters and cartridges,

–

all used and discarded hydraulic and fuel hoses, rubberized metal pieces, and all other elements soiled by above mentioned products.

Such materials and parts must be disposed of according to applicable national regulations on environment and health protection.

–

skin protection when working with oils and lacquers,

–

thorough washing of hands when finishing work and before meals, protect your hands with a suitable cosmetic cream.

• Store oil products, lacquers, organic thinners, and conservation products in original, properly marked containers. Never store them in unmarked bottles or other cans, thus avoiding misuse. It is very dangerous to misplace them as food or drink.

• Should the skin or eyes be accidentally wetted, or inhaled, apply immediately first aid. When digested any of the products by accident, seek medical help immediately.

Do not adjust nor maintain the equipment while the engine is running.

2.5. Short-term conservation and storage of the equipment 2.5.1.

Short-term conservation and storage for 1 to 2 months

Wash and clean thoroughly the entire machine. Before setting it away for conservation and storage, warm up the engine to normal running temperature of 85 degrees C (185 °F). The machine must be stored on a firm level in a safe place, where it wouldn’t be damaged by any natural disasters (flood, landslides, fire, etc.)

2.5.2.

Conservation and storage for more than 2 months

Same rules apply as for the short-term conservation.

Never start the engine when stored!

Wash and de-conserve the machine always in places provided with catch basins to retain soiled water.

When storing the machine in the field, check that the place is not in danger of floods, landslides, or any other kind of peril!

2.6. Final disposal of the machine

The Driver’s Manual

At the end of its useful life, the operator is obligated to dispose of the machine according to national standards and laws on waste and environment protection. We recommend therefore to consult with -

specialized companies authorized to deal with such cases

The controller has two positions. In “0” vibration is off. The lever away in its limit position, vibration is on, Fig. 4. The On and Off position is signaled by the lever position (1) on the gearbox, Fig. 5.

Used to set RPMs of the engine from “0” to maximum by moving it away, Fig. 4. By varying RPMs the frequency of the vibrator is changed at the same time. The lever is connected by a flexible rod to the fuel injector of the engine.

Travel direction control (3)

is located on handle, Fig. 4. By moving the lever to the handle the machine brake is off and travel direction may be shifted (3). Otherwise the direction shift is blocked.

Travel direction forward and back is controlled by setting the control from one limit position to the opposite limit, in conformance with its position, Fig. 4.

Releasing the brake controller (5) during travel the machine is inhibited and simultaneously, the direction shift is in neutral position. (3).

The shifting must be done while the engine is running.

With the brake on the controller is blocked.

By deactivating the brake (fixing it to the handle (1), for instance) it is not necessary to release and apply it (5) again when changing travel direction.

When changing travel direction to backwards, the brake must be first applied by (5), the reverse may be shifted after the brake has been released.

To shift forward the brake doesn’t have to be applied. The lever (3) is moved through “0” to forward direction.

When transportation speed is on by controller (7), the forward gear is blocked.

Safety devices (6) are attached to handle, Fig. 4, and protect the driver when moving back against being pressed to an obstacle. Should the roller move back onto the driver, the safety bumper folds forward and the travel controller shifts to neutral by means of a flexible rod, eventually to “forward” position.

Note.

The flexible rod connecting force from the control lever to the clutch in gearbox is secured against overload by a spring, which limits the force on the rod during shifting.

The rod is thus protected against damage and its life is extended.

By pushing the gearshift on the lid of the gearbox into its limit positions marked by symbols, two speeds may be shifted, Fig. 6.

For easier starting lever (8) is moved to position “1”, see Fig. 7.

The working speed turtle is for work with or w/o vibration.

Travel speed rabbit may be used only for forward travel w/o vibration.

When shifting, the gear shaft (3) must go through the neutral position.

Starting the engine

Daily before starting

• Check oil level in the engine, see Fig. 8, and eventually fill up, Fig. 9. Keep level at maximum.

• Check oil level in gearbox by dipstick (1), eventually fill up by loosening lid (2), Fig. 10. Keep level at maximum.

• Fill up fuel, see Fig. 11.

• Check whether any loose, worn, or missing parts are evident on the machine.

• Before starting check whether there is anybody in the immediate vicinity of the machine or the engine.

• Check the condition of the starting crank. If the handle or its teeth are worn out replace by a new one.

Never use auxiliary means when starting the engine. By doing so, uncontrolled ignition may cause damage to the engine.

2.8. Control and operation of the machine • During starting stand alongside the engine, Fig. 14.

Starting procedure

• Grasp the crank handle as in Fig. 15, turn ccw, Fig. 15, Procedure for the first start of a cold engine at outside temperature above 15 degrees C (59 °F) – summer

• Set decompression lever (8) in the direction of arrow to full stop “1” (start), Fig. 13. In this position the engine is ready to be started. When the lever of automatic decompression is in full stop position (1), it is possible to crank five time freely. Decompression stops thereafter and the engine begins to present resistance. At the ninth turnover the engine achieves full compression and the decompression lever is in position “0” (run).

The Driver’s Manual Note The force needed to turn the crank handle and the engine shaft must be supplied by holding the handle firmly and by steady turning. Start slowly until the ratchet engages and speed up thereafter. Cranking may not be interrupted.

When the engine backfires and the arm turns back, the transfer of force is interrupted. The turning pipe in the crank arm is free and cannot carry the crank handle anymore.

Procedure for the first starting of a cold engine at temperatures below 15 degrees C (59 °F).

• Set the revolutions controller to “0” – fuel closed • Set vibration controller (4) to position “0”.

• Check whether travel controller (3) is in neutral.

• Set decompression lever to mid-position “S” – the engine can be turned freely, Fig. 16.

• Turn the engine over several times.

• Move decompression lever to end position “1” – start.

• Set controller (2) to maximum and start.

• Should the engine not start, return decompression lever to “1” and repeat the process.

Setting decompression lever to “S” between the initial position “0” (engine running) and position “1” (start) assist in free turning of the engine at low temperatures or during engine adjustments.

After the engine has been turned the decompression lever remains in the mid-position “S”.

If the engine doesn’t start, insert the crank handle only when the engine stops turning completely.

2.8. Control and operation of the machine Procedure for the first starting of a cold engine at temperatures below 0 degrees C (32 °F).

• Set the revolutions controller (2) to “0” – fuel closed • Set vibration controller (4) to position “0”.

• Check whether travel controller (3) is in neutral.

• Before actual starting turn the engine thoroughly at least 20 times freely with the decompression lever in the mid-position “S”.

• Set decompression lever to position “1” – start.

• Set revolution controller (2) to maximum and start.

• Should the engine not start, return decompression lever to “1” and repeat the process.

Procedure for starting warm engine:

• Set the revolutions controller (2) to maximum.

• Set vibration controller (4) to position “0”.

• Check whether travel controller (3) is in neutral.

• When starting a warm engine, it is not necessary to turn nine times the crank handle to achieve full compression.

• Set decompression lever to position “1” and slowly move back to position “0”, Fig. 16.

• When the lever is returned slightly towards “0” – the lever clicks in – it cannot be returned to position “1” anymore.

• In this position, revolutions decrease to achieve full compression by one revolution.

If the engine doesn’t start, insert the crank handle only when the engine stops turning completely.

• This step may be repeated five times before the engine achieves full compression.

Note The engine and the gearbox must be filled with oil specified in “Lubrication and Maintenance Manual”, chapters 3.1.1. and 3.1.4.

In older engines with a possibly higher wear of cylinders, better compression may be expected with thinner oils poured in the cylinder up to the upper level with the plug pulled out, Fig. 17. Clean thoroughly the area around the plug (1) and press the plug firmly after you pour oil in.

Note

• If it is impossible to shift to “turtle” or “rabbit” (gears against each other), do the following:

• Shift lever (7) on the gearbox to position “rabbit”, Fig. 21.

• Press brake lever (5) to handle (1).

• Set revolution controller (2) to mid-position.

• Move travel controller (3) from neutral forward up to the limit position – the machine starts moving forward.

• Backing up is not possible- it is blocked.

• Return gear shift (7) to neutral, Fig. 22.

• Press brake lever (5) to the handle.

• Move the travel controller (3) forward and back to neutral.

• Release brake lever (5).

• Repeat gear shifting.

Speed adjustment

• Set speed using controller (2), Fig. 20.

• Use revolutions between middle and maximum – speed is function of revolutions.

With machines with an old transmission oil during the start of a cold engine, the travel controller may move to neutral when shifted forward or backward. In that case hold the travel controller for about a minute engaged and the defect corrects itself thereafter.

Should this happen, replace transmission oil immediately, see “Maintenance Manual”, chapter 3.2. Filling.

Do not use “rabbit” speed with vibration on!

2.8.4.

Setting of vibrator frequency While the engine is running set engine revolutions by controller (2) to its maximum (2800 rpm). The vibrator frequency is 50 Hz.

Sideways steering

The vibration drum guided by the steering undercarriage is steered by the handle of the steering undercarriage (1) to stay in the desired direction.

2.8.5.

Sprinkler application

Switching on With the machine moving at speed “turtle”, move the vibration shift (4) on the undercarriage head to position “1” – the lever in limit position per Fig. 23.

• When working on a hot asphalt surface with or without vibration it is necessary to keep the drum surface wet, which prevents asphalt pieces to stick to the drum surface.

• Fill both tanks with water and open the spout on each,

Stopping the machine and the engine

• Decrease revolutions by gas controller (2).

• Shift gear controller (3) to neutral.

• Release brake lever (5) – the machine is stopped.

• Switch the engine off by controller (2).

2.8.7.

Setting the machine aside

• After finishing work set the machine aside on a suitable place away from all traffic, secured for stability, where no falling earth or natural disasters (floods, landslides, etc.) could imperil the machine.

• When set aside on a public road, provisions must be made to comply with regulations valid for public roads.

• Check the machine completely, clean and repair defects that appeared during operations.

• In winter, release all water from the tanks.

Operations during the run-in period

• When starting the operation of a new machine don’t run for 50 working hours under full load.

• The engine reaches full output under conditions described in chapter 2.6.2.

2.9. Transporting the machine 2.9.1.

Moving the machine on the workplace

The roller moves on its own wheels on the workplace outside public roads, while safety regulations applicable for the workplace are observed.

2.9.2.

Moving the machine on public roads

• The roller moves on its own wheels on public roads between work locations for a short distance, provided that the move complies with public roads traffic regulations of the particular country.

• When moving the machine on public roads loaded on a transport vehicle of proper loading capacity, the machine must be fastened firmly by eyelets on the sides and the drums must be chucked, Fig. 26. The handle of the steering undercarriage must be lifted up and tied in the upper position to the arm of the undercarriage.

During transportation no persons may be present on the loading platform.

2.9. Transporting the machine 2.9.3.

Loading of the machine

• Loading ramps or hoists are used when loading the machine on transport vehicles.

• To facilitate hooking up and lifting openings and eyelets are provided on the arm of the undercarriage on the sides forward and in the back.

Safety provisions during loading The transport vehicle must have brakes applied and chucked during loading and unloading. Other persons must be far away from the vehicle in order not to be imperiled in case of an accidental fall of the machine.

Hoisting equipment and ropes of sufficient strength must be used for loading and unloading. Ropes shouldn’t show signs of wear as specified in the CSN 27 01 44 standard in the Czech Republic. Harnessing must be done by a trained worker.

Do not enter under lifted load!

During loading and unloading obey regulations.

Use proper, sound tying means of sufficient capacity.

Use suitable crane of sufficient capacity.

Tie only to hook-up loops designed for that purpose.

Tying may be done by a trained worker only.

2.9.4.

Towing the machine

• In case of defect it is possible to tow the machine by the eyes in the sideframe with the gear in neutral and the brake lever released /attaching the lever (5) to handle (1)/.

• For towing suitable ropes of sufficient strength must be applied according to CSN 270144 standard for the Czech Republic . During towing all persons except the driver of the tow vehicle must remain far enough not to become subject to an accident.

2.10. Special circumstances when using the machine 2.10.1. Compacting hard and extra compacted areas Hard and compacted materials cannot be compacted any further. Such material causes springing effect from the compacted surface. It is evident by an increased transmission of vibration onto the frame of the machine and thus its deteriorated control. Compacting of hard and already compacted areas is not allowed.

2.10.2. Work at low temperatures Compacting at winter at temperatures below 0 degrees C (32 ° F) depends on fine droplets of water in the compacted soil. With temperature dropping below the freezing point the soil becomes harder and more difficult to be compacted. It is possible to compact dry soil or to perform fast compacting of not frozen materials, before the soil freezes solid.

2.10.4. Working at higher altitudes With increased elevation above sea-level the power output decreases due to decrease in atmospheric pressure and the specific weight of air.

If the engine at higher altitudes above 1500 m spews black smoke, contact the engine manufacturer’s service, who shall adjust the injection pump for such conditions.

At low temperatures release water from the sprinkling tanks!

2.10.5. Work in very dusty conditions In very dusty environment clean air filter and the machine more often than indicated as normal.

2.10.3. Work at higher temperatures and humidity With increasing temperature and humidity the output of the engine decreases. Since both factors affect the output concomitantly, it is possible to describe their effect as follows: -

every 10 degrees C (5 degrees F) of increase represent drop in output by 4% (at constant humidity)

-

every 10% of increase in relative humidity represent drop in output by 2% (at constant temperature)

2.10.6. Compacting near construction sites or subterranean cables and pipes If it is required to compact near construction sites or subterranean cables and pipes, due consideration must be given to the effect of vibrations on such so that they wouldn’t be damaged.

The manufacturer is not responsible for damages resulting from using the machine near construction sites or subterranean cables and pipes!
