Visually inspect the hand pallet truck frame components and hydraulic unit for damage during shipment by the carrier. If damage is evident, notify the delivering carrier immediately and file the necessary claims. Test the hand pallet truck pump for proper operation. If the hydraulic pump does not respond to movement of the handle, an air lock may have developed during shipping. To remedy this, go to the user friendly “Troubleshooting” guide on page 16 in this manual.

Operate this hand pallet lift truck responsibly. If you fail to follow the safety rules while using this hand pallet lift truck, you could hurt yourself or someone else, or damage equipment.

We built this hand pallet lift truck for one job — to handle and transport material. Use it for nothing else.

Any equipment can be hazardous if not used properly, including this hand pallet lift truck.

Operate this hand pallet lift truck only if you are authorized and trained to do so.

Before you use this hand pallet lift truck, read this manual completely. Make sure that you understand all of the content. If you do not understand any part of this manual, tell your supervisor.

Do not use the hand pallet lift truck if it has been repaired, modified, or adjusted, unless it has been checked and approved by your supervisor or another authorized person.

Always operate the hand pallet lift truck with care and good judgment. Be responsible.

Do not operate the hand pallet lift truck with oily hands or oily shoes, due to the risk of slipping.

Floors should be strong enough to handle the heaviest allowed load being transported.

Use extreme care around objects that stick out from racks, shelves, or walls. These objects can cause bodily injury or damage to the hand pallet lift truck.

Never carry passengers.

Never overload your hand pallet truck. Stay within the rated capacity.

Distribute the load evenly on the forks. Do not concentrate loads at one point or load one fork more than the other.

Do not use the hand pallet lift truck if it is damaged or has any faults that might affect either its safety or its safe use.

Never allow anyone to stand in front of or immediately near a loaded hand pallet lift truck.

Always make sure that the load is stable before moving to eliminate the opportunity for load shift.

Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.

Do not run while operating this hand pallet lift truck.

Horseplay is dangerous to personnel and equipment, and is not permitted.

Do not allow your hand pallet truck to drop from one level to another. Even a drop of 1 in. (25 mm) more than doubles the effected load momentarily and results in a “shock” that can bend or break components.

Use the hand pallet lift truck only to transport loads.

•

Do not use in cold storage, salty, or other corrosive environments.

Never put your feet, hands, or any other body part under the frame assembly.

Never allow anyone to stand on or near the hand pallet lift truck’s forks.

Be aware of other lift trucks in the area; operate the hand pallet lift truck cautiously.

Use extreme care when rounding corners.

Too fast a speed could cause a hand pallet lift truck to tip. If loaded, the load could shift and fall.

When the load impairs visibility, the hand pallet lift truck should be pulled and not pushed.

Come to a stop gently and carefully to prevent the load from slipping off the load carriers.

Always keep a safe distance from the edges of loading bays and loading ramps. Be attentive to marked risk areas.

Before operating a hand pallet lift truck over a loading ramp, make sure that the loading ramp is correctly secured and has the necessary load bearing capacity. Operate the hand pallet lift truck slowly and carefully across the ramp.

When parking a hand pallet lift truck on another vehicle, make sure that the parking brake, if equipped, has been applied and/or a parking rack, if available, is used.

Stop when approaching crossing aisles, when exiting an aisle, or when visibility is obstructed.

Before operating or moving a hand pallet lift truck into an elevator, make sure that the elevator is approved for the total weight of the hand pallet lift truck, the load, the operator, and any other passenger in the elevator.

When entering the elevator, the load must enter first—not the operator. No other person should be in the elevator when the load or hand pallet lift truck enters or leaves.

When not in use, lower the forks completely to avoid injury.

Securely set the brakes and block the wheels of highway trucks, trailers, and railroad cars before you load or unload them. Check the highway truck/trailer/railroad car doorway clearance. Make sure floors of highway trucks, trailers, and railroad cars will support the weight of the loaded hand pallet truck. Cross railroad tracks only at approved floor grade crossings. Do not park hand pallet trucks within 8 ft. (2.4 m) of railroad tracks.

Ask local railroad authorities or your supervisor which warning devices to use.

Model PST Plus - Hand Pallet Truck

When lifting a hand pallet lift truck, using lifting equipment, it is recommended to use a hand pallet lift truck equipped with a lifting eye.

Injury may occur when lifting the hydraulic end of the hand pallet lift truck. Cuts may occur when lifting the forks and end-plate.

Use extreme caution when lifting a hand pallet lift truck by hand.

To lift a hand pallet lift truck, either by hand or with lifting equipment, follow these warning instructions.

Report all accidents—personal, damage to buildings or equipment—to your supervisor immediately. All unsafe conditions on the hand pallet lift truck should also be reported.

If any tag and/or decal becomes unreadable, it must be replaced. Contact your supervisor or local authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center for a replacement.

NOTE

The weight of the load must be within the hand pallet lift truck’s permitted lifting capacity. For load weight and lifting capacity rate, see the specification tag on the truck and Figure 1.

3. To lift the load, push down on the lift/lower lever. Pump the handle to lift the load from the floor.

2. For free handle movement, place the lift/lower lever in the neutral position.

The neutral position disengages the pump from the lifting mechanism. This frees the handle so the pump is not being subjected to shock pressures while the hand pallet lift truck is in motion.

Your head, arms, hands, legs, or feet can be seriously injured if they strike objects while the hand pallet truck is moving.

For maximum operating efficiency, follow these instructions: (See Figure 2.)

Keep your body clear of the pallet truck and nearby objects and your hands on the control handle while walking with a hand pallet truck.

The travel direction is indicated by the position of the control switches on the handle.

4. Keep pressing the travel direction selector switch for driving in the forks-first or drive wheel-first direction.

3. The truck will automatically apply the parking brake when the control handle is released.

2. Emergency braking is performed by moving the control handle all the way up or down to the handle stop.

1. Speed reduction is done smoothly by pressing the travel direction selector switch for the opposite travel direction (plugging).

• Before lowering, make sure the area beneath the forks is clear.

• Make sure that there are no conditions in the hydraulic system that may cause accidental lowering.

To avoid injury, do the following: (For location of numbered callouts, see Figure 5 on page 9.)

Never ride on the hand pallet lift truck.

The hand pallet lift truck is used only to transport loads.

Always wear appropriate safety apparel, such as safety shoes, safety glasses, and heavy-duty gloves when working with a hand pallet lift truck.

Loaded or unloaded, operate the hand pallet lift truck with great care. Overturning can occur, particularly when handling high loads or when operating with a hand pallet lift truck fitted with a load support or an extension frame in the raised position.

Never park on an incline or with a raised load.

Never park in areas that could obstruct other traffic or work areas.

Never park in areas that could cause personal injury or damage to any equipment.

Remove the emergency stop key from the truck if leaving the truck without supervision.

All pivot points in the PST Plus are equipped with permanently lubricated bushings and bearings. To increase bearing life, it is recommended that a few drops of light machine oil be applied at each pivot point every 6 months.

This truck is equipped with two valve-controlled batteries of 12Volt/24Amp Hour connected in series. Please obey manufacturer’s recommendations for service of these batteries.

Your hydraulic system is maintenance free. Do not add hydraulic oil unless there is, or has been, a repaired leak. Use Raymond 32 oil or equivalent.

Other oils, fluids, or solvents may damage your hydraulic system. With the forks in the lowered position, fill the reservoir through the oil plug hole until the oil is even with the plug hole.

The batteries must be kept clean and dry and may be washed to remove any accumulated foreign matter.

When the indication for charging is shown, press down and then pull up the emergency stop key, and drive to the nearest charging point. Follow the instructions for charging the battery.

Model PST Plus - Hand Pallet Truck

The truck’s main lead can be connected to the main supply whenever the truck is not in use to make sure the batteries are always fully charged.

Follow battery manufacturer’s recommended use and maintenance instructions. Generally, charging for a minimum of 30 minutes is more gentle to the batteries and as a result will not shorten the battery service life. Additionally, it is necessary to charge the truck batteries overnight at least once a week or until the green LED on the charger lights.

Check if the LED on the battery cover is flashing. A flashing LED indicates that the batteries need charging immediately, and will cause the truck to stop. There is enough charge left in the batteries to enable the truck to be driven to the nearest charging point.

The truck is equipped with a built-in automatic battery charger.

7. Disconnect the charging cable from the wall socket when the charging is done and the truck is to be used.

6. When the main charging is done, the charger will switch over to a equalizing phase. This is indicated by both the yellow and the green LED on the charger being lit. After that, the charger will perform trickle charging, which is indicated by the green LED being lit. The charging is done, but there is no risk of the batteries being damaged if the truck continues to be connected to the main socket for an extended period.

5. Plug the charging cable into a 110 volt wall socket. Check that the yellow LED on the charger is ON.

4. Connect the charging cable to the truck.

3. Press the emergency stop key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise.

1. Move your truck to a well ventilated area.

If the batteries are fully discharged, they must have a full charge, about 12 hours, before next use.

7. Turn the emergency stop key back 90 degrees counterclockwise, pulling it up to the driving position.

Always secure the hand pallet lift truck when carrying out repairs. A badly supported hand pallet lift truck could cause injury.

! WARNING

Before welding or grinding on painted surfaces, always sandblast (remove) at least 4-6 in. (102-152 mm) of paint.

Heated paint gives off harmful gases.

Properly store or dispose of used oil. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Properly dispose of used solvents and all other cleaning/washing chemicals. Do not flush down drains. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper disposal.

Use the troubleshooting procedures shown in Table 2 as a guide only. Do not try to service this lift truck. Contact your Service Department or your local authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center listed on the back of this manual.

Insert the key and turn it to drive mode.

Charge the batteries.

Check the anti-collision safety switch and the brake switch.

Replace the fuses (under the battery cover; on the outside 30A, towards the center of the truck 3A).

The emergency switch key is not inserted.

The batteries are discharged.

The brake is not released.

There is a blown fuse.

Pull up on the emergency switch key to access drive mode.

The emergency switch key is pressed.

The motor does not function.

Replace the valve disc and washer.

There is leakage past the valve disc.

The forks drop a bit at each pump stroke.

Adjust the tension of the valve chain using the adjusting nut.

The lowering valve is not correctly adjusted.

Contact a service technician.

The hydraulic system contains too little oil.

The positions for lift, neutral and lowering do not function correctly.

Pump five strokes with the lowering valve open.

There is air in the hydraulic system.

The pump strokes do not go all the way.

In order to submit a claim for a warranty, you must supply the hand pallet lift truck serial number as well as the date of purchase to your local authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center.

Warranty Claim Procedure

Replacement parts should be “Raymond Approved” and obtained from your local authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center.

Modifications or additions to this hand pallet lift truck that affect its safe use or operation are not permitted without written approval from the manufacturer.

Hand Pallet Truck Warranty

This warranty does not cover oil leaks, adjustments, or loose hardware.

This warranty is void in the event of defects or damage caused by misuse, abuse, or accident. Any truck used under adverse conditions, such as fish, meat or poultry processing plants, tanneries, freezer applications, or any other application where the unit is operating in water or subjected to fluid or chemicals is NOT covered under any warranty.

Components found to be defective by an authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center during the warranty period will be replaced or repaired as indicated above. Replacement components installed during the defined period set forth above, are warranted for the balance of the applicable truck warranty period, or 90 days, whichever is longer. Additionally, freight charges for parts involved in the replacement or repair of a defective component will be paid by Raymond, provided that the replacement or repair is made by an authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center. Labor or miscellaneous costs involved in the replacement of any components determined to be defective are not covered. Local taxes, if any, are excluded.

The Raymond Hand Pallet Truck, Model PST Plus, is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year (1) for the hydraulic pump and truck chassis, and six (6) months for wearable components and batteries from date of installation.

THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY. THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. In no event shall The Raymond Corporation be liable for incidental, special, or consequential damages.

Notwithstanding any other language contained herein, this warranty is expressly voided without any further notice if any modification is made to the Raymond equipment, or if additional components or devices are added to the Raymond equipment, without prior approval having been granted in writing by The Raymond Corporation.

The Raymond Corporation reserves the right to make changes and improvements in design without making changes to previously manufactured vehicles.

• Refresher training, including an evaluation of the effectiveness of that training, shall be conducted as required by paragraph (l) (4) (ii) to ensure that the operator has the knowledge and skills needed to operate the powered industrial truck safely. (l) (4) (i)

• Modifications and additions which affect capacity and safe operation shall not be performed by the customer or user without manufacturers prior written approval. Capacity, operation and maintenance instruction plates, tags or decals shall be changed accordingly. (a) (3)

• Trainees may operate a powered industrial truck only under the direct supervision of persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train operators and evaluate their competence and where such operation does not endanger the trainee or other employees. (l) (2) (i) (A) (B)

• Prior to permitting an employee to operate a powered industrial truck (except for training purposes), the employer shall ensure that each operator has successfully completed the training required by this paragraph. (l) (1) (ii)

• The employer shall ensure that each powered industrial truck operator is competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely, as demonstrated by the successful completion of the training and evaluation specified in this paragraph. (l) (1) (i)

• Training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction (e.g. lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, videotape, written material), practical training (demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee), and evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace. (l) (2) (B) (ii) [Editorial Note: For required training program content, refer to (l) (3) (i) (A-M) and (l) (3) (ii) (A-I).]

Because of their wide applicability, this section of your manual lists several parts of the Federal OSHA regulations that might be of particular importance to your workplace.

Check with your local OSHA office or provincial Labor Bureau to confirm which regulations govern your workplace.

In addition, several states have implemented regulations which apply instead of the Federal regulations.

The use of forklift trucks in the workplace is governed by various regulations. In the United States, the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued regulations which cover the majority of workplaces.

Note: Some or all of the following may not be applicable to your hand pallet lift truck.

• The user shall see that all nameplates and markings are in place and are maintained in a legible condition. (a) (6)

• The driver shall be required to slow down and sound the horn at cross aisles and other locations where vision is obstructed. If the load being carried obstructs forward view, the driver shall be required to travel with the load trailing. (n) (4)

• All traffic regulations shall be observed, including authorized plant speed limits. A safe distance shall be maintained approximately three truck lengths from the truck ahead, and the truck shall be kept under control at all times. (n) (1)

• Only approved industrial trucks shall be used in hazardous locations. (m) (11)

• Brakes shall be set and wheel blocks shall be in place to prevent movement of trucks, trailers or railroad cars while loading or unloading. Fixed jacks may be necessary to support a semitrailer when the trailer is not coupled to a tractor. The flooring of trucks, trailers, and railroad cars shall be checked for breaks and weakness before they are driven onto. (m) (7)

• The employer shall prohibit arms or legs from being placed between the uprights of the mast or outside the running lines of the truck. (m) (4)

• Stunt driving and horseplay shall not be permitted. (n) (9)

• The employer shall certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated as required by this paragraph (l).

The certification shall include the name of the operator, the date of the training, the date of the evaluation, and the identity of the person(s) performing the training or evaluation. (l) (6)

• Industrial trucks shall be examined before being placed in service, and shall not be placed in service if the examination shows any condition adversely affecting the safety of the truck. Such examination shall be made at least daily. Where powered industrial trucks are used on a round-the-clock basis, they shall be examined after each shift. Defects when found shall be immediately reported and corrected. (q) (7)

• All parts of any such industrial truck requiring replacement shall be replaced only by parts equivalent as to safety with those used in the original design. (q) (5)

• Any power-operated industrial truck not in safe operating condition shall be removed from service. All repairs shall be made by authorized personnel. (q) (1)

• If at any time a powered industrial truck is found to be in need of repair, defective, or in any way unsafe, the truck shall be taken out of service until it has been restored to safe operating condition. (p) (1)

• Under all travel conditions the truck shall be operated at a speed that permits it to be brought to a stop in a safe manner. (n) (8)

• An evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every three years. (l) (4) (iii)
