Avoid brush piles, logs or rocks. DO NOT DRIVE THE MACHINE ONTO BRUSH PILES, LOGS, LARGE ROCKS or other surface irregularities that break traction with the ground especiaJiy when on slopes or near drop offs.

SAFETY RULES Never use gasoline or solvent or other flammable fluid to clean parts. Use authorized commercial, non-I!ammable, non-toxic solvents.

When servicing or maintenance requires access to areas that cannot be reached from the ground. use a ladder or slep platform that meets local or national requirements to reach the service point. If such ladders or piatforms are not available, use Ihe machine hand holds and sleps as provided.

Never place gasoline or diesel fuel in an open pan.

Shop or field service platforms and ladders used to maintain or service machinery should be constructed and maintained according to local or national requirements.

Do not remove hoses or check valves in the hydraulic system without first removing load and relieving pressure on the supporting cylinders. Tum radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure before removing. Add coolant only with engine stopped or idling IT hot. See Operation and Maintenance Instruction Manual.

Lift and handle all heavy parts with a lifting device of proper capacity. Be sure parts are supported by proper slings and hooks. Use lifting eyes it provided. Walch out for people in the vicinity.

In lifting and handtfng heavy parts, slings must be of adequate strength for the purpose intended and must be in good condition.

Fluid escaping under pressure from a very small hole can almost be invisible and can have sufficient force to penetrate the skin. Use a piece of card board or wood to search for suspected pressure leaks. DO NOT USE HANDS. If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can develop IT proper medical treatment is not administered immediately.

Handle all parts with extreme care. Keep hands and fingers from between parts. Wear authorized protective equipment such as safety glasses, heavy gloves, safety shoes.

When using compressed air for cleaning parts use safety glasses with side shields or goggles. limit the pressure to 207 kPa (30 psi) according to local or national requirements.

Never use any gas other than dry nitrogen 10 charge accumulators. See Operation and Maintenance Instruction Manual.

When making pressure checks use the correct gauge for expected pressure. See the Operation and Maintenance Instruction Manual or Service Manual for guidance.

Wear welders protective equipment such as dark glasses, helmets, protective clothing, gloves and safety shoes when welding or burning. Wear dark safety glasses near welding. DO NOT LOOK AT ARC WITHOUT PROPER EYE PROTECTION.

For field service, move machine to level ground if possible and block machine. if work is absolutely necessary on an incline, block machine and its attachments securely. Move the machine to leve! ground as soon as possible.

Replace seat belts every two years on open canopy units and every three years on machines with cabs or at change of ownership.

Brakes are inoperative when manually released for servicing.

Provision must be made to maintain control of the machine by blocking or other means.

Wear proper protective equipment such as safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields, hard hat, salety shoes, heavy gloves when melal or other particles are apt to fly odalL

Use only grounded auxiliary power source for heaters, charg. ers, pumps and similar equipment to reduce the hazards of electrical shock.

Keep maintenance area CLEAN and DRY. Remove water or oil slicks immediately.

Know your jacking equipment and its capacity. Be sure lhe jacking point used on the machine is approprIate for the load to be applied. Be sure the support of the jack at the machine and under the jack is appropriate and stable. Any equipment up on a jack is dangerous. Transfer load to appropriate blocking as a safety measure before proceeding with service or maintenance work acoording to local or national requirements.

Remove sharp edges and burrs from reworked parts.

Be sure all mechanics too!s are in good condition. DO NOT use tools with mushroomed heads. Always wear safety glasses with side shields.

Do not strike hardened steel parts with anything other than a soft iron or non-ferrous hammer.

Always block with external support any linkage or part on machine that requires work under the raised linkage, parts, or machine per local or national re:quirements. Never allow anyone to walk under or be near unblocked raised equipment.

8. IDLER GEAR REMOVAL

Using a suitable slide hammer puller, threaded into the tapped hole in the end of the shaft, remove the shaft (Fig. 2). Tie the adjusting sbims in position to the flange of the idler shaft to prevent loss.

1. Free the final drive pinion from the idler gear as follows:

TOPIC 3 · ASSEMllY OF FINAL DRIVE A. CLEANING AND INSPECTION Wash and clean all final drive parts in clean solvent and thoroughly inSpect all the parts before reassembling the final drive.

Inspect the final drive gears, shafts, the inSide of the gear case, cartridge, and all bearings. The gear teeth, shaft splines and the bearingS must be smooth, free of scratches, score marks, cracks, or rough spots. Replace any worn or damaged parts. Clean and inSpect all bearings and bearing cups for roughness, excessive wear, and pitting. Replace the bearings and bearing cups Unecessary.

CARTRIDGE

Check the inner and outer surfaces of the bearing cones, cups, and races for indication of bearing creepage. This can be detected by marks on the bearing, or on the bearing area of the bores, or shaft where the bearing has been used, Always lubricate a bearing at assembly with clean lubricant. Keep all bearings spotlessly clean and welllubrieated to prevent rusting.

When inStalling new bearings, do not remove the bearings from their package until ready for assembling.

pinion until several wraps of the cord around the pinion have been made, then attach a spring scale to the other end of the cord (Fig. 19). Hold the cartridge stationary, then pun on the spring scale and note the pull required to rotate the drive pinion. Add or remove adjusting Shims, located between the end cap and the flange of the cartridge, as necessary to obtain the specified pun of 8 to 12 pounds to rotate the pinion.

5. After the drive pinion bearings are properly adjusted, remove the end cap from the cartridge and tie the adjusting shims to the end cap to prevent loss.

7. Lubricate the sealing lip of the pinion drive shaft oil seal and the O-ring With clean oU and install the O-ring in its groove in the cartridge.

3. Lubricate the final drive pinion bearing cones With clean oil. Place the drive pinion assembly in position in the outer end of the cartridge. Install the outer bearing cup.

C. ASSEMBLY OF IDLER GEAR (Fig. 20)

4. Install the drive pinion end cap, with the original adjusting shim pack, in position on the outer end of the cartridge. Install several caps crews (with hex nuts) to bolt the cap in place on the cartridge (Fig. 19); tighten the capscrews evenly.

1. Refer to Fig. 21 and install the snap ring in position in its groove in the idler gear and install the two bearing spacers, one on each side of the snap ring.

2. Install the two bearing cups in position in the idler gear (Fig. 21), making certain the cups are pressed into the gear as far as possible and are properly seated against the hearing spacers.

When the drive pinion bearings are properly adjusted, a pull of 8 to 12 pounds (taken at the outside diameter of the pinion) is required to rotate the pinion. Start one end of a small cord around the outside diameter of the drive pinion, turn the

1. Heat the oil seal spacer in oil then install the

oil seal spacer in position on the drive axle J with the recessed side of the spacer toward the flange of the drive axle.

2. Heat the outer bearing cone in oil (not exceed a temperature of approximately 260" F.) for ease of installation of the outer bearing cone on the drive axle. Install the outer bearing cone in position on the drive axle, ma.k:ing certain the bearing is pressed tightly against the oil seal spacer.

S. Install the inner and outer bearing cups in position in the housing, ma.k:ing certain the cups are pressed into the housing as far as possible and that each cup is properly seated.

4. Install the oil seal in position in the housing (next to the outer bearing cup) with the sealing lip of the oil seal directed toward the gear end of the housing. Lubricate the sealing lip of the oil seal with clean oil.

5. Lubricate the outer bearing cone with clean oil.

Stand the drive axle on the floor, with the flanged end down. Using a suitable hoist and sling, lower the axle housing assembly into position on the drive axle.

Using a liberal amount of gasket cement on the threads of the attaching capscrewst install the capscrews (with lockwashers) to secure the pinion end cap and the flange of the cartridge to the gear case.

Tighten the caps crews evenly and securely.

6. If access to the final drive pinion and cartridge has been gained by lowering the idler gear to the bottom of the gear case, refer to Topic 7, paragraph C, step 10 for re-installation of idler gear.

1. If the idler shaft bushing has been removed from the inner bore of the gear case, install the buShing in position in the gear case.

5. Remove the blocking from under the idler gear.

Wrap a small cord or rope around the idler gear and attach a spring scale to the end of the cord (Fig. 27). Pull on the spring scale and note the pull required to rotate the gear on its bearings.

When the idler gear bearings are properly adjusted, a pull of 15 to 22 pounds is required to rotate the gear on its bearings. Add or remove bearing adjusting Shims, located between the flange of the idler shaft and the gear case, as necessary to obtain the specified pull of 15 to 22 pounds to rotate the gear.

2. While holding the inner bearing cone in position in the idler gear, install the idler gear assembly in position in the gear case.

3. Place sUitable blocking under the idler gear assembly (Fig. 26) so that the shaft may be installed.

4. Lubricate the outer bearing cone on the idler shaft With clean oil. USing aligning studs (Fig. 26) install the idler shaft assembly in position in the gear case, using the original amount of bearing adjusting shims on the shaft. Remove the aligning studs.

1. Install two aligning studs (180" apart) in the gear case. Using a suitable sling and hoiSt, install the drive axle and housing assembly in position on the gear case as shown in Fig. 1. Remove the aligning studs and secure the housing to the gear case with the capscrews.

5. Install the oil drain plugs in the differential compartment and in the final drive compartment(s) and tighten securely. Fill the compartments to the proper level with the specified lubricant.

5. Loosen and remove the bevel pinion nut (fig. 30 item 2) from the front end of the bevel pinion.

Remove the washer and Withdraw the splinea sleeve (2) from the bevel pinion.

6. USing tools Similar to the ones shown in Fig. remove the bevel pinion assembly from the fr bearing cone and the pinion housing. Remove the front bearing cone from the hOUSing.

NOTE It may be necessary to insert a bar through the oil drain hole, using a bydraulic jack on the end of the bart relieve the pressure of the gear on the idler shaft. Slowly rotate

the drive axle in a clockwise rotation until the idler gear passes enough of the bore to insert a bar in one of the upper holes in the gear. Leave the bar in the gear, resting on the bottom of the bore.

7. Remove capscrews holding the end cap to the final pinion cartridge. Remove end cap and shims. Tie shims to the end cap for reassembly.

8, Remove the Snap ring from the bore of the final drive pinion. Remove the spacer.

9. Use a sling of sufficient strength to support the

differential assembly when the final pinion cartridge is moved.

16. Remove the capscrews and lockwashers securing the bevel pinion housing to the gear case. Remove the bevel pinion assembly from the gear case.

7. Torque the lock nut to 600-700 ft. lbs. Check the rotational torque of the bevel pinion, using an inch pound torque wrench. Proper torque is 40-60 inch pounds.

NOTE an inch pound torque wrench is not available, it will be necessary to clamp the splined sleeve in the vise and check as outlined in Paragraph B.

The tooth contact pattern can be determined by painting the pinion teeth with marking compound or blUing, then rotating the gear. The tooth contact pattern will show plainly. It is very important that the tooth contact pattern be checked after the bevel pinion and the bevel gear have been adjusted and to change the location of the bevel pinion by adding or removing bevel pinion depth adjusting shims as necessary to obtain the desired tooth contact pattern (refer to Fig. 3a). This will lift the hitch assembly clear of the tractor.

CAUTION Use care to raise the scraper main frame only as far as the hydraulic hoses permit.

1. Tilt the hitch to the left, for easier access to the differential compartment, as fonows: a. Apply down pressure to the scraper bowl, lifting the scraper wheels from the ground. b, Place blocking under right wheel of scraper. c. Raise scraper bowl, alloWing rear wheels to return to the ground.

2. Remove drain plug from the bottom of differential compartment and allow oil to drain.

3. Thoroughly clean the top of the differential housing and surrounding area.

4. Remove the differential gears and thrust washers from their bores in the differential housing.

8. The differential side gears are now free from engagement with the splines of the drive shafts.

The differential may be rotated for access to any of the pinion and bushing faces. Disassemble per procedures in Paragraph B, steps 2, :3 and 4.

5. Using a suitable bearing puller, remove the bearing cones from the differential housing.

6. Cut the lockwires and remove the capscrews securing the bevel gear to the differential hoUSing.

TOPIC 7 · ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION OF DIFFERENTIAL A. INSPECTION OF DIFFERENTIAL 1. Wash and clean all differential parts in clean solvent and thoroughly inspect all the parts before reassembling.

2. Inspect the differential gears, pinions, the inside of the differential compartment, and all bushings. The gear teeth, splines and the bushings must be smooth, with no scratches, score marks, or rough spots. Replace any worn or damaged parts.

install the bevel gear in position on the differential housing, making certain the punch marks on the bevel gear are matched with those on the differential housing.

3. Secure the bevel gear to the differential hoUSing with capscrews. Tighten the capscrews securely and lock with locking wire.

Wben the pinion teeth are propE'rly meshed with the differential gear teeth, the pinion flange will fit evenly in the pinion bushing.

6. lnstallation of Differential Pinions and Bushings

(3) Install a pinion bushing over the top of the pinion, a support ring over the bushing and secure to the differential housing withcapscrews. Tighten the capscrews evenly to a torque of 180 - 190 ft. Ibs., and loek: the capscrews in pairs with locking wire.

NOTE When inspecting pinion assemblies for wear, each pinion must be checked for movement.

They should revolve within the bushings with the bushings tightened down securely. Place capscrew in tapped hole in center of pinion to revolve pinion. Cheek: fit between pinion and pinion bushings. Tap pinion solidly with hammer to make sure it is seated squarely.

Check at several points on the diameter, using two feeler gauges placed 180" of each other, as shown in Fig. 46. There must be a clearance of .007" - .009" on each side.

Remove 01" add shims to achieve this clearance.

(4) Refer to Fig. 46 and check fit between the pinion and bushing, using two feeler gauges placed 180" of each other. Tbe specified clearance between the pinion and bushing is .007" - .009". Cheek: at several points on the diameter.

(5) lnstall the second pinion and bushing in the differential housing, and check for clearance in the same manner as the first.

a. EARLY TYPE - distinguished by the use of dowel pins to position the bushing to the differential case. Repair parts were available separately.

(6) Remove the wood block, carefully not to distnrb the position of the side gears. Install the third pinion and bushing in the differential hoUSing, and check for clearance in the same manner as the first.

(1) lnstall the dowel pins in the differential housing.

(2) Install a pinion bushing over the dowel pins in position in the differential housing. Position a pinion in the bushing so that the teeth of the pinion mesb with the teeth of both differential gears.

(3) Remove wood block, carefully not to disturb the position of the side gears, Install third pinion assembly as in step (1) above.

pull required to revolve the bevel gear and differential housing assembly. A pun of approximately 19 to 22 Ibs. is required to in· dicate that the bearings are adjusted to the specified 135 - 150 Ibs, in. torque pre-load.

2. Place sUitable blocking under the differential assembly so that it is aligned for installation of the final drive pinion cartridges. Lubricate the bearing cones with clean oil.

e. Add or remove adjusting shims between the flange of the final drive pinion cartridges and the gear case as necessary to obtain the specified pre-load. When adjusting, bump the car tridges to make certain the bearings are properly seated.

3. Install a new O-ring and a new oil seal in each final drive pinion cartridge with the sealing lip of the seal directed toward the inner end of the cartridge. Install the inner and intermediate bearing cups in each cartridge. Before installing the cartridges, determine the amount of shims required to obtain the specified final drive pinion bearings pre-load (refer to "FINAL DRIVE", TopiC 3, paragraph B, step 4).

6. Insert the pinion drive shafts into position in their respective cartridges, USing care to prevent damage to the oil seals, located in the cartridges.

4. Insert each final drive pinion cartridge, with its

When installing the drive shafts, make certain the end of the shaft with the tapped hole is toward the outside of the gear case.

5. The specified pre-load of the differential bearings is 135 .. 150 in. Ibs. torque. Check the differential bearing pre-load as follows:

Install the outer bearing cups for the pinion bearings. Install a drive shaft spacer and a snap ring in position in each pinion.

Tie a loop in the free end of the rope and hook a spring scale in the loop as shown in Fig. 48.

9. Install the differential cover and gasket and secure with caps crews and lockwashers.

12. Install the differential compartment oil drain plug. Remove the differential oil level gauge rod cap and fill the differential compartment, with the specified lubricant, to the "full" mark on the gauge rod. Install and tighten the gauge rod cap.

13. start the engine and move tractor into position for hitch assembly, operate the scraper bowl hydraulic lever using "down H pressure and lift the hitch assembly just high enough to remove the blOCking. Remove the blocking and lower the hitch assembly onto the tractor main frame. Stop the engine.

TOPIC 9 • INSPECTIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS A. TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS

9. When using a sliding hammer type puller to remove or install an assembly containing tapered roller bearings, be sure that the pull is evenly distributed on the bearing. Do not allow the cup and the cone of the bearings to become separated, as each blow of the sliding hammer, with the cup and cone separated, would cause the cup and the cone to be rammed together and damage to the bearing would result.

1. Thoroughly clean the bearings in clean solvent and dry with compressed air free of moisture.

Inspect the bearings for worn and pitted rollers and races. Make certain that the roller retainer is in good condition and that the retainer is not bent or damaged. Do not use a bearing which is in bad condition.

2. Inspect the O.D. of the bearing cup (outer race) and the I.D. of the cone (inner race) for marks

IMPORTANT Do not experiment. A properly setuptapered roller bearing will give satisfactory service for a very long time, while a bearing preloaded too much or set up too loose may fail in a comparatively short time.

c. SHAFTS AND SPLINES 1. Inspect all shafts for worn areas and make certain they are not twisted or bent. Check the bearing journals and make certain they are smooth, round, and are of the specified diameter, to assure the proper fit of the bearing or bushing.

4. Always lubricate the bearings at assembly with clean lubricant.

5. After the bearings have been removed, keep the bearings spotlessly clean, well lubricated, and wrap the bearings in clean oil proof paper to prevent the entrance of dirt and rusting. When installing new bearings, do not remove the bearings from package until ready for assembling.

Do not wash the lubricant from a new bearing.

2. Inspect the splines of all shafts for roughness,

burrs, and wear. Remove an burrs and roughness from the splines with a stone or mill file.

Be sure the splines of all shafts are smooth and try all the gears on their respective shafts to be sure that they slide freely on the splines.

D. Oil SEALS (LIP TYPE)

6. Use a press and a suitable sleeve or driver when installing bearings. If these are not available, a cold rolled soft steel rod and hammer may be used to drive the bearing into position; do not strike the bearing shield or ball retainer when installing.

1. When any work has been done which involves the removal of a shaft from an oil seal, or the removal of an oil seal from its bore, the sealing lip of the seal must be carefully examined, 2. The sealing lip must not be scratched, folded

Bearings may be heated to expand the bore, thus facilitating the installation of the bearing on a shaft. One method of transferring heat to bearings is through the use of hot oil. The bearings should never be placed directly on the bottom of a tank or container, but should be suspended in the oil on hooks or placed on a screen so that they may be heated uniformly.
