Introduction Introduction IMPORTANT: Read through this instruction thoroughly and familiarize yourself with the machine before performing the procedure. Do not skip steps or perform them out of order.

This instruction demonstrates the proper procedure for removing the existing pneumatic downforce system and installing the supplied hydraulic downforce system on the following planters.

NOTE: The acronym IRHD stands for: Individual Row Hydraulic Downforce.

The graphics shown in this procedure have parts removed for clarity.

Right-hand and left-hand sides are determined by facing in the direction of forward travel.

Locate the original serial number decal (A) on the left-hand side of the frame.

Introduction

At the end of the performance upgrade process, install the new serial number decal from the performance upgrade kit near the original serial number decal (A) location.

Install the new IRHD serial number decal (B) as close to the original serial number as possible.

Do not conceal or cover-up the original serial number or any other decals when installing the new serial number decal. Record the new serial number in the spaces provided and give this page of information to the customer after the performance upgrade is finished.

In a separate and secure location, maintain an up-to-date inventory of all the product and component serial numbers.

Regularly verify that the identification plates have not been removed. Report any evidence of tampering to law enforcement agencies and order duplicate plates.

Other steps you can take: 1. Mark your planter with your own numbering system.

2. Take color photographs from several angles of each planter.

Initial Software Instructions

IMPORTANT: DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. Before proceeding with the instructions in this manual, complete the initial task required for the software payload.

Before starting the retrofit installation on the planter, place a DTAC case to request the correct software payload for the planter being retrofitted. The following information must be provided in addition to the field requirements of the DTAC case: Model:____________ Original Planter Serial Number:____________ Number of Rows and Row Spacing:____________ Drawbar or 2-point Hitch:____________

The software package takes a few days to be processed and sent out.

After all the software is available, connection to the planter at the rear diagnostic connector and programming of all the control units is possible.

Once the programming is finished, do the following procedures and enter the information into the display:

• Height sensor calibration • Gauge-wheel downforce sensor calibration • Pneumatic downforce to zero • Downforce sensors to zero • Enter the number of fertilizer sensors

The package is for updating the Planter Master Controller (PMC), Row Unit Controllers (RUC), and Electric Power Generation (EPG) system.

After the planter has been upgraded, start the download of software payload from the John Deere Custom Performance site.

Make sure to download and install the software for all the control units: Once the files for the PMC-A, PMC-B, RUC, and EPG are available, prepare to install the software for all the control units.

Safety

Avoid High-Pressure Fluids

Inspect hydraulic hoses periodically – at least once per year – for leakage, kinking, cuts, cracks, abrasion, blisters, corrosion, exposed wire braid or any other signs of wear or damage.

Replace worn or damaged hose assemblies immediately with John Deere approved replacement parts.

Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious injury.

Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections before applying pressure.

Search for leaks with a piece of cardboard. Protect hands and body from high-pressure fluids.

If an accident occurs, see a doctor immediately. Any fluid injected into the skin must be surgically removed within a few hours or gangrene may result. Doctors unfamiliar

with this type of injury should reference a knowledgeable medical source. Such information is available in English from Deere & Company Medical Department in Moline, Illinois, U.S.A., by calling 1-800-822-8262 or +1 309-748-5636.

Live With Safety

Before returning machine to customer, make sure machine is functioning properly, especially the safety systems. Install all guards and shields.

Always lower the attachment or implement to the ground before you work on the machine. If the work requires that the machine or attachment be lifted, provide secure support for them. If left in a raised position, hydraulically supported devices can settle or leak down.

Do not support the machine on cinder blocks, hollow tiles, or props that may crumble under continuous load. Do not work under a machine that is supported solely by a jack.

Follow recommended procedures in this manual.

When implements or attachments are used with a machine, always follow safety precautions listed in the implement or attachment operator's manual.

Safety

There are many variables that affect the sound level range, including machine configuration, condition and maintenance level of the machine, ground surface, operating environmental, duty cycles, ambient noise, and attachments.

Exposure to loud noise can cause impairment or loss of hearing.

Always wear hearing protection. Wear a suitable hearing protective device such as earmuffs or earplugs to protect against objectionable or uncomfortable loud noises.

Protect Against Noise

Use Proper Tools Use tools appropriate to the work. Makeshift tools and procedures can create safety hazards.

For loosening and tightening hardware, use the correct size tools. DO NOT use U.S. measurement tools on metric fasteners. Avoid bodily injury caused by slipping wrenches.

Use only service parts meeting John Deere specifications.

Wear Protective Clothing Wear close fitting clothing and safety equipment appropriate to the job.

Precautions for Welding

CAUTION: Avoid potentially toxic fumes and dust.

Hazardous fumes can be generated when paint is heated by welding, soldering, or using a torch.

Do all work outside or in a well ventilated area.

Dispose of paint and solvent properly. If you sand or grind paint, avoid breathing the dust by wearing an approved respirator. If you use solvent or paint stripper, remove with soap and water before welding. Remove solvent or paint stripper containers and other flammable material from area before welding. Allow fumes to disperse at least 15 minutes before welding or heating.

IMPORTANT: Welding on the engine is NOT ALLOWED. If welding must be performed on the machine, follow these precautions.

IMPORTANT: High currents or electrostatic discharge into electronic components from welding may cause permanent damage.

Remove paint before welding or heating (see Safety Section in this manual for more information on paint removal and high-pressure lines).

3. Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable(s) or open battery (+) switch if equipped.

4. Clear or move any wiring harness sections away from the welding area.

5. Welding on engine components is not allowed.

6. Never connect the welder ground to any engine component or engine driven components that may be connected to the engine.

7. After welding, reverse steps 2—3.

1. Remove paint from the area to be welded and ground cable clamp location.

2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable(s) or open battery (-) switch if equipped.

Safety

Welding CAUTION: When welding, always follow all safety precautions. Avoid fire by removing all flammable materials. When not possible, shield the flammable material; then, always post a fire guard with an adequate extinguisher.

If possible, lower the planter to the ground, before welding.

Avoid potentially toxic fumes or dust. Hazardous fumes can be generated when paint is heated.

Remove paint before welding.

If a paint stripper or solvent was used, remove it with soap and water. Remove the material containers from the area and allow fumes to disperse.

Work outside or in a well ventilated area.

IMPORTANT: When welding near electronic components such as the planter monitor (control unit), unplug all connectors and remove the control units from the planter to prevent possible damage to the microprocessors within the boxes.

When sanding or grinding paint, avoid breathing the dust by wearing an approved respirator.

General Face-Seal-Fitting Assembly and Installation—All Pressure Applications Face-Seal O-Ring to Stud End Installation

4. Remove thimble.

1. Inspect the fitting surfaces. They must be free of dirt and/or defects.

Face-Seal Straight Stud End O-Ring Installation

2. Inspect the O-ring. It must be free of damage and/or defects.

3. Lubricate O-rings using system oil, and install into groove.

4. Push O-ring into groove so O-ring is not displaced during assembly.

5. Index angle fittings and tighten by hand pressing joint together to insure O-ring remains in place.

6. Tighten fitting or nut to torque value shown on the chart per dash size stamped on the fitting. DO NOT allow hoses to twist when tightening fittings.

1. Install a thimble over the fitting threads to protect the O-ring from nicks.

2. Slide the O-ring over the thimble into the turned down section of the fitting.

3. Remove thimble.

Fitting Installation 1. Install fitting by hand until snug.

2. Position adjustable fittings by unscrewing the fitting no more than one turn.

3. Apply assembly torque per table.

Face-Seal Adjustable Stud End O-Ring Installation

Assembly Torque

1. Back off the lock nut and washer to full exposed turned down section of the fitting.

1. Use one wrench to hold the connector body and one wrench to tighten nut.

2. Install a thimble over the fitting threads to protect the O-ring from nicks.

2. For a hydraulic hose, it may be necessary to use three wrenches to prevent twist; one on the connector body, one on the nut, and one on the body of the hose fitting.

3. Slide the O-ring over the thimble into the turned down section of the fitting.

Service Recommendations For Flare-Type Tube Fittings

4. To prevent twisting the tubes, use two wrenches.

Place one wrench on the connector body and with the second, tighten the swivel nut to the torque shown in this chart.

1. Check flare and flare seat for defects that cause leakage.

2. Align tube with fitting before tightening.

3. Lubricate connection and hand tighten swivel nut until snug.

4. Single piece flange (D): Place hydraulic line in center of flange and install four cap screws. Flange must be centrally located on port. Hand tighten cap screws to hold flange in place. Do not pinch O-ring.

5. After components are properly positioned and cap screws are hand tightened, tighten one cap screw, then tighten the diagonally opposite cap screw.

Tighten two remaining cap screws. Tighten all cap screws as specified in the chart below.

Recommendations for Hydraulic Connections

Tractor Valves

Extend and Retract Lever Position

The Extend (A) and Retract (B) symbols are on the tractor selective control valve (SCV).

CAUTION: Avoid injury due to hydraulic hose failure. Inspect the hoses regularly.

Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic or other lines. Tighten all connections before applying pressure. Search for leaks using a piece of cardboard. Protect hands and body from high-pressure fluids.

If an accident occurs, see a doctor immediately.

Any fluid injected into the skin must be surgically removed within a few hours or gangrene can result. Doctors unfamiliar with this type of injury, call the Deere & Company Medical Department in Moline, Illinois, or another knowledgeable medical source.

Individual Row Hydraulic Downforce (IRHD) Initial Flush and Test

To warm the hydraulic fluid and remove particulates from the hoses, use the bypass hose (B). To remove air from the system, flush particulates from the valves, and test the accumulators, use on-screen procedures.

CAUTION: Avoid serious injury from fluid injection. Do not connect or disconnect hoses with the tractor engine running. (See Avoid High-Pressure Fluids.)

Fluid Injection Hazard

1. Turn off the tractor.

2. There are couplers (A) on one end of each IRHD section. Locate a set of couplers, remove the coupler caps, and attach the bypass hose (B).

3. Keep bystanders clear and start the tractor.

NOTE: See the tractor Operator’s Manual for oil temperature specifics.

4. Continue the hydraulic flow until the oil is approximately 50°C (120°F) (hoses are warm when touched).

5. Turn off the tractor.

6. Remove the bypass hose and replace the coupler caps.

NOTE: An unused selective control valve (SCV) is needed for the valve and accumulator procedures.

7. If all SCVs are in use, remove the hoses from one.

8. Start the tractor.

Reason for running this test: Anytime air has been allowed into the hydraulic circuit when switching tractors or changing hydraulic hoses.

IMPORTANT: Before running the air purge test, Individual Row Hydraulic Downforce (IRHD) circuit must be connected to the tractor power beyond. The test must be performed at idle with all the other SCVs disengaged.

This test must be run at least two times.

1. Use the following test to remove air from the hydraulic circuits.

Select Menu >> Planter button >> Diagnostics button >> Tests tab (A).

3. Select Air Purge (C) from the drop-down list.

4. Input selected row units for the air purge test using the input boxes (D and E).

5. To start air purge test, select the start/stop button (F).
