Akerman warrants to the first user that its products shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for six (6) months from date of delivery or 1000 hours of use, whichever first occurs.

Should failure to conform with this warranty appear during the warranty period as mentioned above under normal and proper use and provided the products have been properly installed, stored and maintained, Akerman shall, if given prompt notice by Buyer, correct such nonconformity, at Akerman's option, by: (i) repair at jobsite, if possible; or, (ii) repair or replacement of the nonconforming products or parts thereof F.O.B. factory or authorized distributor; or, (iii) refund of the purchase price of the nonconforming product after return of such product to Akerman. Return of products or parts to Akerman shall be at Buyer's risk and expense. In no event shall Akerman be responsible for providing working access to the defect, including disassembly and reassembly of associated equipment.

Parts repaired or replaced, or the product it replaced as a unit, are warranted for 30 days or for the period of time remaining under the original warranty, whichever is longer.

THE FOREGOING WARRANTIES ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES OF QUALITY,WRITTEN,ORAL OR IMPLIED; AND ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED. Correction of nonconformities in the manner and for the period of time provided above shall be Buyer's exclusive remedy and shall constitute fulfillment of all liabilities of Akerman (including any liability for direct, indirect, special, incidental and consequential damages) whether in warranty, contract, negligence, tort, strict liability or otherwise with respect to nonconformance or defects in the products delivered hereunder.

Akerman neither assumes nor authorizes any person to assume for it any obligation other than as herein provided in connection with its products.

The foregoing warranties shall not apply to any used product or parts or any products or parts which a) have been improperly repaired or altered, b) have been subjected to misuse, negligence or accident, or c) have been used in a manner contrary to Akerman's instructions. .

IN NO EVENT SHALL AKERMAN BE LIABLE FOR SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES whether arising in contract, negligence, tort, strict liability or otherwise, including but not limited to damage to property, loss of profits or revenues, loss of use of the product or any associated equipment, cost of capital, cost of substitute equipment, facilities or services, downtime costs, or claims of customers of the Buyer for such or other damages, whether on account of products, parts or services furnished hereunder or delays in delivery or performance thereof.

ABOUT THIS MANUAL

This manual incorporates a new simplified page numbering system. The book is divided into major categories, each of which is separated by an index tab sheet. Pages are numbered consecutively within each section only. For example, the section entitled "Pumps and Motors" contains the following pages: Page Page Page Page

Should we add a pump to the machine at a future date, it would simply become "page 5".

If we change one of the existing pages, the new page would have the same page number. For example, if we change the vendor on the swing motor, a new page would be prepared. This new page would also be "page 3". In other words, each Master Parts Manual would then contain two page 3's. The effective date and serial number block will be your key to determine which page to use for a particular machine.

Each page will include the name of the major category it is a part of. This is found below the title of the page itself, and will enable you to file newly released pages in their proper location in your Master Parts Manual.

As in the past, customer manuals will be individually assembled, and contain only those pages which apply to his particular machine.

OPERATION The information in this manual is designed to furnish the owner and operator of the Hein-Werner C-14A Backhoe with the basic information needed to understand the operation of the machine.

For safe and efficient operation, first become familiar with the location and purpose of all controls and instruments. Study the following pages carefully, regardless of your previous experience.

ENGINE AND INSTRUMENTS

When operating the machine, periodic attention should be given to the instrument panel gauges and warning lights. This will prevent any minor malfunction from becoming a major breakdown.

GAUGES NOTE:

The tachometer located at the rear of the engine is an integral part of the Detroit Diesel. The engine governed speed has been preset at 2650 R.P.M. (Clutch disengaged) at full throttle. The engine R.P.M. should never exceed 2650 R.P.M. at full throttle.

5. Water Temperature Gauge: Under normal engine operating conditions the water temperature should be 160 ° to 185 ° F. 6. Oil Pressure Gauge: The oil pressure gauge should indicate 40 to 60 P.S.T. at full throttle. Should the pressure fall below this range (other than at idle) immediately shut off the engine and investigate the cause.

7. Ammeter Gauge: The ammeter indicates either battery charge or discharge depending on the condition of the battery.

WARNING LIGHTS

8. Hydraulic Temperature Warning Light: A red light located on the instrument panel will appear should the hydraulic oil overheat. If this happens, immediately stop the engine and investigate as to the cause.

9. Toggle Switch: To test the hydraulic temperature warning light (red light) use the toggle switch.

DIGGING CONTROL LEVERS

Operators not familiar with hydraulic machines may tend to over-control and thereby cause rough operation of the machine. It is, therefore, recommended that the machine be operated at half throttle or less until the operator becomes thoroughly oriented with the controls.

1. Boom Control Lever A. To raise the boom, pull back on the boom control lever.

If greater lift speed is desired, push the boom speed boost control button while pulling back on the boom control lever.

B. When the boom control lever is returned to the neutral position (center) the boom will remain positioned.

C. To lower the boom, push the boom control lever forward.

2. Swing Control Lever A. To swing the platform in a clockwise direction, pull the swing control lever back.

B. To swing the platform in a counter-clockwise direction, push the swing control lever forward.

C. To stop swing rotation in either direction, feather the swing control lever into the opposite direction until rotation stops.

CAUTION: WHENEVER THE MACHINE IS NOT BEING OPERATED, ALWAYS ENGAGE SWING BRAKE AND LOWER BUCKET TO THE GROUND. 3. Dipstick Control Pedal A. To tuck the dipstick, push down with the heel of the right foot on the dipstick control pedal. If greater digging speed is desired, push the dipstick speed boost control button while heeling the dipstick control pedal.

B. When the dipstick control pedal is returned to the neutral position (center) the dipstick will remain positioned.

C. To extend the dipstick, push down with toe of the right foot on the dipstick control pedal.

4. Bucket Control Pedal A. To curl bucket, push down with the heel of the left foot on the bucket control pedal.

B. When the bucket control pedal is returned to the neutral position (center) the bucket will remain positioned.

C. To dump bucket, push down with toe of the left foot on the bucket control pedal.

FORWARD

PROPEL CONTROL LEVERS

The crawler undercarriage is in the accepted digging and traveling position when the drive sprockets are to the rear. Follow the operating instructions below when the crawler is in this position. When the crawler is in a reversed position (drive sprockets at the front) reverse the directional instructions.

1. To propel machine forward, push both levers forward.

2. To propel machine backward, pull both levers backward.

3. To make a right hand turn, use any of the following procedures: A. Push the left lever forward and leave the right lever in neutral.

B. Pull the left lever forward and leave the left lever in neutral.

C. When working in close quarters, or when speed is required, a right hand "spin" turn may be made by simultaneously pushing the left hand lever forward and the right hand lever backward.

4.

To make a left hand turn, reverse the above directions.

NOTE: The control valves in the propel hydraulic circuit are detented to hold the spools in either of the two positions. The spool will not return to the neutral position unless the control lever is manually returned to the neutral position.

WHENEVER MACHINE IS NOT BEING OPERATED ALWAYS ENGAGE PROPEL BRAKE AND LOWER BUCKET TO THE GROUND.

PREPARING TO START ENGINE

CAUTION: BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE, BE SURE THE AREA IS ADEQUATELY VENTILATED. Prior to starting the engine, the following daily checks and servicing must be performed.

DAILY CHECK LIST 1. Check The Engine Crank Case Oil Level.

2. Check The Hydraulic Reservoir Oil Level.

3. Check The Radiator Coolant Level.

4. Check The Battery Electrolyte Level.

5. Check All Control Valves For The Neutral Position 6. Perform Daily Lubrication

STARTING THE ENGINE

Before starting the engine for the first time, refer to the engine manufacturers operating manual.

NOTE: The engine may require the use of a cold weather starting aid in areas with low ambient temperatures.

1. Make sure the manual shut-down control is in the open position.

2. Set the throttle control in the idle position. Engage starting motor.

If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, disengage starter and allow the starting motor to cool a few minutes before trying again.

3. Check the oil pressure gauge immediately after starting the engine. If there is no oil pressure indicated within 10-20 seconds, stop the engine and check the lubricating system. The minimum oil pressure should be at least 18 P.S.I. at 1200 R.P.M. The oil pressure at normal operating speed should be 40-60 P.S.I. 4. Run engine at quarter throttle and no load for approximately five minutes allowing it to warm up, before applying a load.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

1. Release the load and decrease the engine speed.

2. Allow the engine to run at half speed or lower with no load for five minutes before closing the throttle and stopping the engine.

NOTE: The emergency shut-down control should never be used to stop the engine except in an emergency.

MAINTENANCE

CHECKING HYDRAULIC PRESSURES

WARNING

Altering the hydraulic system relief pressure settings from those given on the following pages will void the machine warranty.

The control valve reliefs were adjusted at the factory to permit the most efficient operation of the machine. Altering these settings in any way will decrease the unit's efficiency and ultimately shorten machine life. Therefore, it is recommended that only factory or dealer representatives adjust the relief settings. In the event of a hydraulic system malfunction which requires the settings to be checked, proceed as follows: Tools required:

0-3000 psi gauge 3/4 inch open end wrench Screwdriver 1/4 inch Allen wrench

NOTE All relief pressure settings are to be checked with the engine operating at full throttle.

A drop in line pressure will exist between the-control valve and the item being tested. Therefore, the test gauge must be installed at the item being tested to obtain a correct reading.

1. Install the test gauge on the rod side of the boom cylinder.

See illustration above.

2. Remove the acorn nut to expose the main relief adjusting screw.

Loosen adjusting screw jam nut by turning it counterclockwise.

Do not turn the adjusting screw.

3. Retract the boom cylinder rods until they deadhead. To do this, lower the boom into an excavation, or disconnect the cylinder rods from the boom. While deadheading the cylinders, the test gauge should be indicating 2150 psi. This is the pressure at which the main relief is by-passing. It is not necessary to set main relief, if the reading is incorrect, until the port reliefs are checked.

4. To check the boom cylinder port relief, turn the main relief adjusting screw clockwise until the port relief begins to by-pass.

This should occur at 2350 psi. Continue turning the adjusting screw clockwise two full turns. No increase in gauge reading should occur.

If the reading is incorrect, the cylinder port relief must be reset.

NOTE Do not readjust the main relief pressure setting at this point. The main relief must remain set two full turns above 2350 psi so that the other port reliefs can be checked.

5. To adjust the boom cylinder port relief, remove the acorn nut and loosen the jam nut. Turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase relief pressure setting, or counterclockwise to decrease relief pressure setting. Tighten the jam nut while securely holding the adjusting screw in place. Install acorn nut. Reattach the boom cylinder rods if necessary.

Install the test gauge in the base end of the bucket cylinder.

Refer to the illustration above. Curl the bucket until the bucket cylinder deadheads. Check the test gauge, it should be reading 2350 psi. If not, the bucket cylinder relief should be reset as outlined in step 5.

7. On units which have automatic propel brakes, remove the mounting hardware from the propel brake control valve, and move the valve away from the control linkage. This will prevent the propel brake from releasing. On machines which have manually operated brakes, set the brakes.

8.

Remove the left hand propel motor guard, and install the test gauge in the lower propel tube port (Port B). See illustration above.

9. Move the left propel lever forward. This will cause the relief for that circuit to by-pass. Observe the test gauge, it should be indicating 2350 psi. If not, the relief cartridge must be reset as described in step 5.

10. Install test gauge in the upper propel tube port (Port A). Refer to the figure above.

11. Pull the left propel lever backward and check the rear relief pressure setting as outlined in step 9.

12. After the port reliefs have been set, pull the left propel lever backward so that the relief begins by-passing. Readjust the main relief pressure setting to 2150 psi. Secure the adjusting screw and install the acorn nut.

13. Remount the propel brake control valve, if it was removed.

1.

Install the test gauge in the base end of the dipstick cylinder. See illustration above.

2.

Remove the acorn nut from the main relief cartridge and loosen the jam nut. Do not turn the adjusting screw.

3. Tuck the dipstick until the dipstick cylinder deadheads and the main relief begins to by-pass. The test gauge should be indicating 2150 psi. It is not necessary to reset the main relief, if the reading is incorrect, until the port reliefs are checked.

NOTE Do not readjust the main relief pressure setting at this point. The main relief must remain set two full turns above 2350 psi so that the other port reliefs can, be checked.

4. To check the dipstick cylinder port relief, turn the main relief adjusting screw clockwise. The port relief should begin to by-pass at 2350 psi. Continue turning the main relief adjusting screw clockwise at least two full turns. The test gauge reading should not change. If the reading increases, or if you are unable to obtain a reading of 2350 psi, the dipstick cylinder port relief must be reset.

5. To adjust the port relief, remove the acorn nut and loosen the jam nut. Turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase relief pressure or counterclockwise to decrease relief pressure. Hold the adjusting screw securely and tighten the jam nut. Install the acorn nut.

6. On units which have automatic propel brakes, remove the mounting hardware from the propel brake control valve, and move the valve away from the control linkage. This will prevent the propel brake from releasing. On machines which have manually operated brakes, set the brakes.

7. Remove the right hand propel motor guard, and install the test gauge in the lower propel tube port (Port B). See illustration above.

8. Move the right propel lever forward. This will cause the relief for that circuit to by-pass. Observe the test gauge, it should be indicating 2350 psi. If not, the relief cartridge must be reset as described in step 5.

9.

Install the test gauge in the upper propel tube port (Port A).

Refer to the illustration above.

10. Pull the right propel lever backward and check the rear relief pressure setting as outlined in step 8.

11. After the port reliefs have been set, pull the right propel lever backward so that the relief begins by-passing. Readjust the main relief pressure setting to 2150 psi. Secure the adjusting screw and install the acorn nut.

12. Remount the propel brake control valve, if it was removed.

Install the test gauge in Port B of the swing motor. Refer to the illustration above.

2. Remove the acorn nut from the main relief cartridge and loosen the jam nut. Do not turn the adjusting screw.

3.

Engage (set) the swing brake. Activate the swing control lever This will as though you were swinging the boom to the left. cause the main relief to by-pass. Check the test gauge reading, it should be indicating 2000 psi. It is not necessary to reset the main relief, if the reading is incorrect, until the port reliefs are checked.

4. To check the swing left relief pressure, turn the main relief adjusting screw clockwise while watching the test gauge. When the gauge indicates 2200 psi the swing left relief should begin to by-pass. Continue turning the adjusting screw at least two full turns. The gauge reading should not change.

NOTE Do not readjust the main relief pressure setting at this point. The main relief must remain set two full turns above 2200 psi so that the other port reliefs can be checked.

If you are unable to obtain a reading of 2200 psi or if the reading is higher, reset the relief valve. To do this, remove the acorn nut from the swing left relief and loosen the jam nut.

To increase relief pressure, turn the adjusting screw clockwise, to reduce the setting, turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise.

6. After the pressure is set, hold the adjusting screw securely and tighten the jam nut. Install the acorn nut.

7.

Install the test gauge in Port A of the swing motor. See illustration above.

8. Actuate the swing right control lever. The test gauge will be indicating the pressure at which the swing right relief cartridge is by-passing. This reading should be 2200 psi. If the relief pressure is incorrect, reset the cartridge as outlined in step 5.

9.

Continue activating the swing right control and reset the main relief cartridge to 2000 psi. Hold the adjusting screw in place and tighten the jam nut. Install the acorn nut.

CHECKING SPEED BOOST SOLENOID RELIEF PRESSURE RELIEF CARTRIDGE END CAP

INSTALL TEST GAUGE HERE

SOLENOID RELIEF VALVE SPEED BOOST SOLENOID VALVE

1.

Install the test gauge in the base of the boom cylinder as shown in the illustration above.

2.

Extend the boom cylinder rod until it deadheads.

3. Position the boom control in the neutral position and activate the boom speed boost circuit. The test gauge should be reading 2150 psi, If the speed boost solenoid relief setting is incorrect, then it must be readjusted.

4. To adjust the speed boost solenoid relief, remove the valve end cap and turn the solenoid adjusting screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease pressure.

5. Replace valve end cap, and remove the test gauge.
