GEHL COMPANY New Agricultural Equipment G E H L Company (Inc.), hereinafter referred to as G E H L, warrants new G E H L machinery and attach­ ments (the "Equipment") to be free from defects in material and workmanship at the time of delivery to the original purchaser if properly set up and operated in accordance with the recommendations set forth in G E H L'S Operator's Manual.

G E H L's liability for any defect shall be limited to repair or replacement of the Equipment. G E H L'S obligation shall terminate twelve (12) months after the delivery of the goods to the original retail purchaser or when the Equipment is first put into use, whichever event occurs first.

This warranty shall not apply to tires which are subject to the warranty of the tire manufacturer. Please contact your G E H L dealer for further information on tire warranties.

This warranty shall not apply to any item of Equipment which shall have been repaired or altered outside the G E H L factory or authorized G E H L dealership or which has been subject to misuse, negligence or accident; neither shall it apply to Equipment which has not been operated in accordance with G E H L'S printed instructions or has been operated beyond the Company's recommended machine rated capacity.

EXCLUSION OF WARRANTIES Except as othe rwise expressly stated herein, G E H L makes no representation or warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability or fitness for particular purpose in respect to the Equipment.

G E H L shall not be liable for incidental or consequential damages for any breach of warranty, including but not limited to inconvenience, rental or replacement equipment, loss of profits or other commerc ial loss.

No agent, employee or representative of G E H L has any authority to bind G E H L to any affirmation, representation or warranty concerning its machinery and attachments except as specifically set forth herein.

Certain limitations expressed herein are excludable in accordance with provisions of local law. Such provisions shall be deemed struck if such local law is applicable. All other provisions shall continue to apply.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Your decision to purchase this piece of GEHL· equip­ ment was a good one. We are sure that your decision was strongly considered and that you are looking for­ ward to many seasons of reliable performance from this machine.

We, as a Company, have invested a great deal of time and effort in developing our lines of agricultural and industrial equipment.

This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information, con­ tained within, was prepared for your assistance in preparing, adjusting. maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine.

Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual.

Use the Index, in the back of the manual, for specific chapter and topic/page number references.

This GEHL equipment is provided with its Operator's Manual attached to it. A Manual Compartment is provided on the Harvester, under the Toolbox Cover, for storing the Harvester and Attachment(s) Operator's Manuals. After using this manual, return it to the Com­ partment and please keep it with the unit at all times!

MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE BEFORE unclogging, cleaning, adjusting, lubricat­ Ing or servicing the unit:

1.

Disengage the tractor PTO.

2a.

Place the tractor transmission in park to prevent any tractor movement and lower unit until Harvester Frame is resting on firm ground.

2b. If work is going to be done under unit or At­ tachment while mounted on tractor, place the tractor transmission in park to prevent any tractor movement and shut the tractor off.

Next, leave the tractor and Jock both Service Stands in their "supporting" positions. Then, restart tractor and lower unit onto firm ground until Senice Stands support unit.

3.

Shut off the tractor engine and remove the starter switch key and take it with you when leaving the tractor seat.

4.

Shut off the Control Box Power Keyswitch and remove the Key and take it with you when lea"ing the tractor seat.

5.

Wait for all movement to stop.

6.

Disconnect PTO DriveIine from the tractor.

ONLY when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure could lead to death or serious bodily injury.

This Attachment is intended and designed to be mounted ONLY on a GEHL Forage Harvester. The GEHL Company will NOT be responsible for operator safety if used without being properly mounted on a GEHL Forage Harvester.

Read and observe ALL Safety information and Decals on the Harvester and Attachment BEFORE operating the unit. In addition, familiarize yourself with ALL of the Safety Devices on both units and periodically check that they are functioning properly.

CHAPTER 4 OPERATION GENERAL INFORMATION NOTE: The HA 1220 Attachment is designed for mounting on a particular GEHL manufactured Har­ vester and is NOT intended NOR warranted to adapt to harvesters by other manufacturers. Contact your local GEHL dealer for additional information.

A WARNING BEFORE starting the tractor engine and run· nlng the Forage Harvester and Hay Attach­ ment for the first time, review and comply with ALL applicable recommendations set forth In the SAFETY chapters of this manual and your Forage Harvester Operator's Manual.

The HA1220 Hay Attachment requires a minimum amount of attention after it is properly mounted and performing in the field. The following paragraphs of information however, may contain useful hints for con­ tinued satisfactory operation. On tractor where remote con trolled hydraulic pump output is adjustable, BE SURE to time the output so that it lifts the Attachment gently. .

Do NOT leave the Attachment running empty for long periods of time when the Harvester is NOT chopping; this results in unnecessary wear on the Attachment's moving parts. BEFORE starting the Attachment, with the Harvester Control Box Switch and the tractor PTO control lever, reduce the tractor throttle to idle RPM so that the Harvester and Attachment can come to operat­ ing speed with the least amount of shock.

When picking up the windrow, select a tractor ground speed which does NOT allow the tractor RPM to fall below the recommended PTO speed. When tractor speed falls below this level, the unit is being crowded, loads are high, the quality of cut deteriorates and the Harvester Blower may slow-down to where it can trip­ out the drive clutch.

The proper combination of length-of cut and ground speed for a given tractor horsepower should keep the

Harvester Feed Rolls running about 1 inch from the top of the Feed Roll Housing.

Although the HA1220 Attachment will pick up the crop traveling either with or against the direction in which the windrow was laid. it will generally pick up more cleanly and at higher ground speeds when travel­ ing in the same direction in which the windrow was laid. By traveling in the same direction as the mower conditioner, the operator can set the Tines at least I" (25 mm) higher off the ground. This fact will help the operator who MUST operate in stony fields, thus reducing the amount of stones or debris picked-up.

NOTE: The quality of cut is mainly dependent upon keeping the Harvester Knives properly sharpened and, the Cutterbar in good condition and properly adjusted to the Knives.

UNPLUGGING

A WARNING When any part of the Hay Attachment be­ comes plugged, stop the unit IMMEDIATELY. NEVER leave the tractor seat to unplug the Attachment without first exercising the MAN· DATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 4).

When the Auger of the Hay Attachment rises to the top of its slotted Guides and is still unable to pass a slug of hay coming into it, the Load Sensor in the Harvester's Attachment drive, will open the Electric Clutch, which drives the Attachment and Feed Rolls and, in turn, stop the Attachment. The operator is alerted to this condition by the sound of a Horn in the Control Box. Refer to the "Restarting with Crop in Feed Rolls andlor Attachment and Horn Sounding" SUbtopic in the Operation chapter of the CB 1040 Forage Harvester Operator's Manual.

NOTE: Lift the Harvester and Hay Attachment before backing-up the tractor to avoid skidding the Hay Attachment Tires.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION (Fig. 4-1) The HA1220 is delivered from the factory with the At­ ~achment Dri ven Sprocket secured to its Shear Flange wi th (3 each) 1/2 x 1-1/4 Bolts and Locknuts. These 1/2 Bolts will NOT shear thus enabling the Harvester Load Sensors to perform their proper function.

CHAPTER 5 LUBRICATION Grease Every 10 Hours (or Daily)

ACAUTION NEVER attempt to lubricate the machine when any part of the unit Is In motion. ALWAYS BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to lubricate this machine.

It is well to remember that a sufficient amount of oil or grease will prevent excessive part wear and early failure.

OILING Lubricate the Tine Drive Chain, the Auger Drive Chain and the Harvester-Attachment Drive Chain every 10 hours of operation using a good grade of foaming aerosol lubricant. The recommended method is to spray the entire length of Chain on the center of the Rollers. It is better to lubricate Chains when they are warm (after use, rather than before).

GREASING Wipe dirt from the Fittings before greasing to prevent any dirt from being forced into the Bearings or pivots.

Replace any missing Fittings, when noted. To mini­ mize dirt build-up, avoid excessive greasing.

Grease Fitting Locations NOTE: Lubricate all Fittings at the prescribed inter­ vals of operation fisted. Use a good grade of lithiumbased grease.

CHAPTER 6 ADJUSTMENTS

ACAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform any adjust­ ments on the Hay Attachment, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCE. DURE (page 8).

AUGER HEIGHT (Fig. 6-1) The distance between the bottom of the Auger Flight­ ing and the Trough sheet metal is factory adjusted to between 3/8 and 1/2" (9.5 and 13 mm). This dimension should be maintained if the Trough is to be swept clean. Auger Shims, which control the Auger height, are located below the Bearing Slides on each side of the Attachment. Remove the Right and Left Guards for access to the Shims.

CASTER WHEELS (Figs. 6-3 & 6-4) The Caster Brackets for the Caster Wheel assemblies on the HA 1220 Attachment are slotted to enable adjust­ ing the height of the unit and Tine to ground clearance.

NOTE: If it is necessary or otherwise desireable to move the Hay Attachment around by hand, either push ' (from behind the unit) or pull (from in front of the unit).

The Caster Wheels are designed such that they can only be steered in their normal forward-moving direc- . lion.

TINE DRIVE CHAIN (Fig. 6-2) The Tine Drive Chain is Spring-tensioned and field ad~ justment is NOT required. If this Chain is removed for service, BE SURE to replace the Chain so that it is routed in the same manner as before it was removed. A Decal is provided behind the Drive to display the proper routing.

It may be necessary to lower or raise the Wheel posi­ tions, according to conditions. When the stubble length is short and NOT dense (the crop lays closer to the ground), readjust the Wheel positions higher so that the Tines are closer to the ground to pickup crop more efficiently.

To drop the Tines onto the infeed table, remove the Clip and slide the bar to the right until the Lug comes out of the slot and the Arm drops against the Stop that is bolted to the Extension. Replace the Spring-type Clip thru the Clip hole which has been repositioned to the inside of the Extension.

NOTE:

To prolong Tine life and avoid excessive wear, the Wheels should be maintained in a position which prevents the Tines from striking the ground.

When the stubble length is high and dense, lower the Wheel positions to reduce the likelihood of picking up stones or debris. The Wheel positions can be read­ justed, as desired. BE SURE both Wheels are adjusted equally. Tire pressure should be checked frequently and maintained at 45 to 50 PSIG (315 to 350 kPa).

CROP HOLD-DOWN (Figs. 6-5 & 6-6) The HAI220 is provided with a Two-position Crop Hold-down. When the Hold-down is in the "raised" position, it will help prevent the entering crop from flowing over the Auger when the windrows are heavy.

When the Hold-down is lowered, it will help prevent a light crop from blowing-off the infeed table in high wind conditions. Since the later condition is less fre­ quently encountered, the Hold-down should normally be locked in the "raised" position where it will NOT impose a restriction on the incoming crop.

To maintain the "raised" position, place the Lug, which protrudes from the Hold-down Bar Arm, through the slot in the left Hold-down Extension. The Hold-down Bar is held in this position by placing the Spring-type Clip through the Clip hole which has been repositioned to the outside of the Extension.

NOTE:

Check the position of the Hold-down Fingers to make sure that they point at the top of the Auger Tube when they are fully raised. If this position does NOT exist, the Hold-down Fingers should be bent to obtain it. This is important to keep the entering crop from flowing on top of the Auger because the Fingers are too high. If the Fingers are too low, they will restrict the infeeding flow capacity.

THROAT SHEETS (Fig. 6 7) w

The Throat Sheets are provided with slotted mounting holes so that they can be reposition to match the ap­ propriate Harvester Feed Roll Housing width. BE SURE to make the correct initial Throat Sheet adjust­ ment when the Attachment is mounted on the Harvester so that they fit between the outsides of the Harvester Front Upper Feed Roll and the insides of the Feed Roll Housing Sidesheets. Tightly secure the mounting hardware after the correct setting is adjusted.

CHAPTER 7 SERVICE

ACAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform all Ser­ vice routines on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 4). In addition, if the Hay Attachment is going to remain on the Harvester, BE SURE to use additional blocking to maintain the unit in the raised position while working under it.

NOTE: The extreme right and left Tines, which sur­ round the Pickup Shafts, use a 318 x 2 Cap Screw and NO (058876) Washer.

Replace the Tine Guide assembly.

PICKUP BULKHEAD BEARING RE· PLACEMENT Left Pickup Bulkhead Bearing (Figs. 7-2 & 7-3) Should the Left Pickup Bulkhead Bearing need re­ placement. proceed as follows:

TINES Straightening Bent Tines (Fig. 7-1) Tines can become bent if the Attachment is driven over very rough ground, rocks or other large debris. To prevent the crop from being pulled down the Tine Guides and to insure the Tines push the crop back to the Auger, it is important that the Tines are bent back to their factory setting. Tines are properly positioned when, at the point of disappearance below the Tine Guides, the ends of the Tines are approximately 2-3/4" (70 mm) from the bend at the rear of the Tine Guide.

Remove and retain the Left Tine Guide and the adjacent Four Channel Tine Guide.

2.

Remove and retain the Tine, Tine Holder and Tinebar Spacer.

3.

Loosen the Set Screws on the Pickup Bulkhead Bearing.

4.

Remove and retain the Bearing Retainer from the Bulkhead.

5.

Remove and discard the Pickup Bulkhead Bear· ing from the Cam Shaft.

Replacing Broken Tines Replace a broken Tine in the following manner:

1.

Remove and retain the Tine Guide assembly.

2.

Remove and discard the broken Tine.

3.

Secure the new Tine to the Tine Holder with (1) 3/8 x 1-1/4 Cap Screw, (1) Washer (058876) with cup side of Washer facing the head of the Cap Screw and (1) Flanged Serrated Hexagon Nut.

Install the new Pickup Bulkhead Bearing and the Bearing Retainer by inserting (1) 3/8 x 1-1/4 Cap Screw through the square hole in the Bulkhead, the round hole in the Bearing Retainer, (1) Hexagon Nut and (1) Hexagon Locknut. Insert (3) 3/8 x 3/4 Cap Screws through the Bearing Retainer, the round holes in the Bulkhead, (3) Lock Washers and (3) Hexagon Nuts.

Replace the Tine, Tine Holder and Tinebar Spacer on the Cam Shaft.

Retighten the Set Screws on the Pickup Bulkhead Bearing.

9.

Replace the Left Tine Guide and the Four Chan· nel Tine Guide.

Right Pickup Bulkhead Bearing Should the Right Pickup Bulkhead Bearing need re­ placement, use the procedure for replacing the Left Bearing as a guideline. Replacement of the Right Bear­ ing is NOT outlined because it is NOT as complex as the procedure to replace the Left Bearing.

CAM FOLLOWER REPLACEMENT (Fig. 7-4) Should the Cam Followers for the Tinebars need re­ placement, proceed as follows:

1.

Remove and retain the fastening hardware from the bottom of the Four Channel Tine Guide.

2.

Remove and retain the Left Tine Guide.

3.

Remove and retain the 1/2 Hexagon Locknut from the threaded Stud of the Follower (the threaded Stud of the Follower can be kept from turning by using a wrench on the Nut on the op­ posite side of the Cam Follower Arm).

4.

Remove and discard the Cam Follower through the Access Hole in the Side Plate and Cam.

5.

Install the new Cam Follower through the Access Hole.

6.

Replace and retighten the 1/2 Locknut on the threaded Stud of the Follower.

Replace the Left Tine Guide.

8.

Retighten the fastening hardware on the bottom of the Four Channel Tine Guide.

CHAPTER 8 SET-UP & ASSEMBLY NOTE:

To avoid damaging the Tie Brace when unloading the unit from the shipping vehicle or during setup & assembly, NEVER attempt to lift the Hay Attachment at the Tie Brace.

When the HA1220 is delivered from the factory, the Right and Left Caster Wheel assemblies and the Crop Hold-down are with the unit but NOT installed.

welded into the Left Caster Bracket. The Flat Bar at the top of the Right Spindle is to fit between the two Round Pins welded into the Right Caster Bracket. BE SURE to install a Washer on the top and bottom of each Hub and anchor each Wheel assembly with a Retaining Ring.

To facilitate Left Caster Bracket installation, the rear Carriage Bolt should be loosely installed in the slot first. Then, use the CaSler Bracket to guide the rear Carriage Bolt into the "Keyhole" slot in the Caster Support.

The lower rear Bolt in the Right Caster Bracket is to be installed with the Bolt Head on the outside to clear the Tire as shown.

PREPARING FOR FIELD OPERATION PREPARING HARVESTER Refer to the Preparing for Field Operation information provided in the CB 1040 Harvester Operator's Manual for the necessary preparations on the Harvester for installing the HA1220 Hay Attachment. BE SURE that both Attachment Support Bars are correctly positioned before proceeding to mount the Hay Attachment.

ATTACHMENT-HARVESTER ALIGN­ MENT

HARVESTER DRIVE SPROCKET & CHAIN (Fig. 9-2) NOTE: BEFORE proceeding to attach the Drive Chain, lockout the Self-tensioning Drive Chain Idler Slides using two 112 x 2-112 Bo/ts.

Connect the Drive Chain and properly attach the Con­ nector Link. Then, remove the two 1/2 Bolts to uniock the Drive Chain Idler Slides that apply tension to the Chain.

Before proceeding to mount the HA1220 to the CB 1040 Harvester, make sure that it is standing on level ground. Also, BE SURE that the Attachment Throat Sheets match the Harvester Feeder Head open­ ing.

NOTE: If it is necessary or otherwise desireable to move the Hay Attachment around by hand, either push (from behind the unit) or pull (from in front of the unit).

The Caster Wheels are designed such that they can only be steered in their normal forward-moving direc­ tion.

MOUNTING PROCEDURE (Fig. 9-1) Using the 3-point linkage controls of the tractor, align the Quick-switch Pivots on the Harvester with the Quick-switch Yokes on the Hay Attachment. Drive the Harvester forward until the Yokes mate the Pivots.

Then, secure the Yokes to the Pivots by installing the Quick-switch Pins and Cotter Pins.

Adjust the Harvester height so that the Hay At­ tachment Tires are on the ground but the Har­ vester Frame is NOT on the ground.

2.

Lock the Attachment Stand in the "down" (sup­ porting) position.

3.

Disconnect the Drive Chain.

4.

Remove the Quick-switch Pins and place them in the Harvester Toolbox.

5.

Remove the Attachment from the Harvester.
