G E H L.: Company (Inc.), hereinafter referred to as G E H L.:, warrants new G E H L.: machinery and attach­ ments (the "Equipment") to be free from defects in material and workmanship at the time of delivery to the original purchaser if properly set up and operated in accordance with the recommendations set forth in G E H L.: 's Operator's Manual.

G E H L.: 's liability for any defect shall be limited to repair or replacement of the Equipment. G E H L.: 's obligation shall terminate twelve (12) months after the delivery of the goods to the original retail purchaser or

when the Equipment is first put into use, whichever event occurs first.

This warranty shall not apply to tires which are subject to the warranty of the tire manufacturer. Please contact your G E H L.: dealer for further information on tire warranties.

This warranty shall not apply to any item of Equipment which shall have been repaired or altered outside the G E H L.: factory or authorized G E H L.: dealership or which has been subject to misuse, negligence or accident; neither shall it apply to Equipment which has not been operated in accordance with G E H L.: 's printed instructions or has been operated beyond the Company's recommended machine rated capacity.

EXCLUSION OF WARRANTIES

Except as otherwise expressly stated herein, G E H L.: makes no representation or warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability or fitness for particular purpose in respect to the Equipment.

G E H L.: shall not be liable for incidental or consequential damages for any breach of warranty, including but not limited to inconvenience, rental or replacement equipment, loss of profits or other commercial loss.

No agent, employee or representative of G E H L.: has any authority to bind G E H L.: to any affirmation, representation or warranty concerning its machinery and attachments except as specifically set forth herein.

Certain limitations expressed herein are excludable in accordance with provisions of local law. Such provisions shall be deemed struck if such local law is applicable. All other provisions shall continue to apply.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Your decision to purchase this piece of GEHL· equip­ ment was a good one. We are sure that your decision was strongly considered and that you are looking for­ ward to many seasons of reliable performance from this machine.

We, as a Company, have invested a great deal of time and effort in developing our lines of agricultural and industrial equipment.

This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information, con­ tained within, was prepared for your assistance in preparing, adjusting, maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine.

Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual.

Use the Index, in the back of the manual, for specific chapter and topic/page number references.

This unit is provided with a Plastic Pouch for storing the Operator's Manual. After using it, please return the Manual to the Pocket and keep it with the unit at all times! Furthermore, if this machine is re-sold, we recommend that this Manual accompany the unit.

CHAPTER 3 CHECKLISTS PRE-DELIVERY After the Baler has been com~letely set-up, the following inspections should be made before delivering it to the Cus­ tomer. Check off each item after prescribed action is taken.

SA FETY The above Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! It stresses an attitude of "Heads Up for Safety" and can be found throughout this Operator's Manual and on the machine itself.

BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOLLOW· ING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDITION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQUIPMENT, WHETHER FAMILY MEMBER OR EMPLOYEE, IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Our Company ALWAYS takes the operator and his/her safety into consideration when designing its machinery and guards exposed moving parts for his/her protection. How­ ever, some areas can NOT be guarded or shielded in order to assure proper operation. In addition, this Operator's Manual and Decals, on the machine, warn of further danger and should be read and observed closely.

The word DANGER, WARNING or CAUTION, used herein and on the machine itself, signals three degrees of hazard, as follows.

A DANGER

"DANGER" Indicates an Imminently hazard· ous situation which, if not avoided, will result In death or serious Injury.

AWARNING "WARNING" Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, If not avoided, could result In death or serious Injury.

CAUTION

"CAUTION" Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result In minor or moderate injury. May also alert against unsafe practices.

MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE BEFORE unclogging, cleaning, adjusting, lubricating or servicing the unit:

1.

Disengage the tractor PTO.

2.

Shut off the tractor engine, remove the starter key and take it with you.

3.

Wait for all movement to stop.

4.

Remove the Telescoping PTO Drive and ALL power connections from the tractor.

ONL Y when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure, could lead to death or serious bodily injury.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY REMINDERS Some photographs, used in this manual, may show Doors, Guards and Shields open or removed for illustration pur­ poses ONLY. BE SURE that all Doors, Guards and Shields are in their proper operating positions BEFORE starting the tractor engine to operate the unit.

To ensure continued safe operation, replace damaged or worn-out parts with genuine GEHL service parts, BEFORE attempting to operate the equipment.

ALWAYS wear safety glasses with side shields when strik­ ing metal against metal. It is further recommended that a softer (non-chipable) material be used to cushion the blow.

Failure to heed could lead to serious injury to the eye(s) or other parts of the body.

ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways. BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations.

Only a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machine(s), in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

SA FETY Good safety practice dictates that you NEVER tow an implement (without brakes), unless towing vehicle weighs at .least one-and-one half (1-1/2) times the weight of the towed implement and its load. For any public highway travel and to be in compliance with this rule, BE SURE that your tractor is heavy enough to counterbalance the weight of the Baler and a full-sized bale.

BE SURE that the Telescoping PTO Drive rotates freely inside the Drive Shield Tubes at all times. Balers are provided with two different types of Telescoping Drives; one Drive has Metal Shield Tubes and the other has Plastic Shield Tubes. The Drive with Plastic Shield Tubes MUST be anchored to a hole in a part of the Baler Frame with the Tie-down Chain provided. The Drive with Metal Shield Tubes MUST NOT be anchored.

Bales made with the Round Baler are LARGE, CYLINDRI­ CAL and HEAVY. Serious personal injury or property damage could result if the Bales are NOT carefully and properly handled. NEVER eject or store Bales where they could possibly roll downhill.

NEVER tow a Baler on a public highway at a speed greater than 20 mph (32 kmh). Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem.

Our Company does NOT sell replacement tires. In addition, tire mounting, service or inflation can be dangerous. When­ ever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires, following the tire manufacturer's in­ struction. If you do NOT have such instructions, contact your tire dealer or our Company. In any event, to avoid possible fatal or serious injury, follow the specific directive given in the Service chapter of this manual.

NEVER use your hands to search for hydraulic fluid leaks, use a piece of paper or cardboard. Escaping fluid under pressure can be invisible and can penetrate the skin and cause a serious injury! If any fluid is injected into your skin, see a doctor at once! Injected fluid MUST be surgically removed by a doctor familiar with this type of injury or gangrene may result.

BE SURE to review and comply with ALL Safety recom~ mendations set forth in the tractor operator's manual.

CHAPTER 5 CONTROLS & SAFETY EQUI PMENT

A WARNING Become familiar with and know how to use ALL of the Safety Devices and Controls on this Baler BEFORE attempting to operate It. Know how to STOP Baler operation BEFORE starting It! Also, read and understand ALL Safety Decals on the Baler, BEFORE operat­ Ing It. Do NOT attempt to operate this equip­ ment unless ALL factory Installed, Guards, Shields and Covers are properly secured In place.

GUARDS & SHIELDS Whenever and wherever possible and without affecting machine operation, Guards, Shields and hinged Covers have been used on this equipment to protect potentially hazardous areas. In many places, Decals are also provided to warn of potential dangers as well as to display special operating procedures.

Implement Drive Line Shields (Fig. 5-1) The Telescoping PTO Drive, between the Baler Gear­ box and the tractor PTO shaft, is equipped with Rotat­ ing Shields. The Drive components inside the Shields MUST be free to rotate at all times.

A WARNING BE SURE that the PTO Shafts and Connec­ tions are free to rotate Inside the Shields BEFORE starting the tractor engine! This model Baler Is provided with one of two dif­ ferent types of Telescoping Drlvesj one style has metal Shield Tubes and the other has plas­ tic Shield Tubes. Twine Tie Guard (Fig. 5-1) This bolt-on Guard is provided to cover and protect the Twine Tie mechanism. A hole with a Bushing is provided on the right side of the Guard for feeding twine to the mechanism . Therefore, this guard MUST be secured in place for proper operation of the Baler.

Rubber Coupler & Jackshaft Shields (See Fig. 5-1) The Rubber Coupler and Jackshaft Shields are bolted in position and MUST remain securely fastened, ex­ cept for servicing.

Main Drive Shield (Figs. 5-2 & 5-3) This hinged Shield, which is held closed by a Latch, covers and protects the front section of the Main Drive Chain mechanism. A Holder Rod is provided with the Shield to hold it open while servicing or making ad­ justments inside. BE SURE to keep the Shield closed and latched whenever the Baler is in operation.

Two large, hinged Side Doors, with Latches, are provided on the left side of the Baler to cover and protect the Rollers and Rear Door Drive mechanisms.

Holder Rods are provided on the Doors to hold them open while servicing or making adjustments inside. BE SURE to keep the Side Doors closed and latched when­ ever the Baler is in operation.

Also located on the left side of the Baler are a hinged and Latched Shield (near the bottom front) to cover and protect the Pickup Drive and two bolt-on Shields (along the bottom) which are for service access during maintenance.

Rear Door Dust Panels (Fig. 5-4) The Baler Rear Door is provided with Dust Panels, which also serve as Shields to protect the Rear Door Rollers. The hinged Upper Dust Panel is secured with two (2) Rubber hook-type Latches to provide for easier access to remove accumulated dust. The Lower Dust Panel is secured with six (6 each) Cap Screws, Nuts and Washers.

REAR DOOR CYLINDER LOCKS (Fig. 5·5 & See Fig. 5-3)

A WAR NING ALWAYS engage the Rear Door Cylinder Locks BEFORE working Inside the Bale Cham­ ber or anywhere under the Rear Door when the Door Is open. ALWAYS engage BOTH Locks to make sure the Door Is properly supported ..

BE SURE that BOTH Cylinder Locks are fully engaged.

During normal operation, each Cylinder Lock is secured in its "storage" position by a Latch Rod and Spring mechanism. To engage the Cylinder Lock, the Latch Rod MUST be pulled down, to release the Cylinder Lock, BEFORE raising the Rear Door. After the Door is opened completely, check both Locks to see if they are positioned properly and then lower the Door until it is resting on the Cylinder Locks.

PICKUP CRANK (Fig. 5-6 & See Fig. 5-1) A Pickup Crank Handle and Ratchet mechanism is provided on the right side of the Baler to raise or lower the Pickup for making operating height adjustments.

HITCHJACK (See Fig. 5-1) A Hitchjack is furnished with the Baler to support the machine when the tractor is disconnected as well as to facilitate aligning the Hitch Clevis Plate with the trac­ tor drawbar for hookup.

When the Jack is NOT being used to support the Baler, it can be removed and relocated to a "Jack Storage Position" Hub, located on the inside of the Drawbar left weldment.

A WARNING BE SURE the Lock Pin Is properly Inserted through both "Jack Supporting Position" Hub holes BEFORE disconnecting the Baler from the tractor.

PRESSURE SWITCH - Un i ts w/Auto­ Electric Twine Tie, Only (See Fig. 5-6) On units equipped with an Auto-Electric Twine Tie System, a Pressure Switch is provided to signal the Twine Tie mechanism to begin its cycle when a predetermined baling pressure is reached.

TWINE TENSION (See Fig. 5-6) NOTE:

Before attempting to make Pickup height adjustments, disconnect the Support Chains at the Frame Anchors on each side of the Baler. Be sure to reconnect the Chains after making any adjustments.

To raise the Pickup, turn the Crank Handle clockwise.

The Ratchet Stop will lock the Handle in one of four positions nearest to the desired height setting.

To lower the Pickup, first turn the Crank Handle clock­ wise Gust enough to relieve tension on the Ratchet Stop) and then release the Ratchet Stop by pulling back on it. Then, while holding the Stop in the "released" position, turn the Crank Handle counterclockwise until the Pickup is at the desired height. Release the Stop to lock the Crank Handle in one of the four stop positions.

PRESSURE GAUGE (See Figs. 5-6 & 5-1) The Baler is provided with a Pressure Gauge to indi­ cate bale forming pressure. Refer to the Operation chapter in this manual for detailed information regard­ ing the use of the Pressure Gauge.

A CAUTION

This unit is provided with a Twine Tensioner Assembly for increasing or decreasing Twine Tension. After the first few bales have been tied and the twine cut, it may be necessary to adjust the Twine Tensioner so that 22" (560 mm) of twine extends from each of the Twine Delivery Tubes. Individual Wing Nut and Spring mechanisms are provided on the Twine Tensioner to increase or decrease the amount of tension on each length of twine. Turning the Wing Nut clockwise, which increases twine tension, will result in shortening the amount of twine extending from the Tube; turning the Wing Nut counter-clockwise, which decreases twine tension, will result in lengthening the amount of twine.

TELESCOPING PTO DRIVE (Fig. 5-7) Each end of the Telescoping PTO Drive is provided with a Spring-loaded Locking Device to positively lock the Drive onto the tractor PTO shaft and Baler Input Drive Shaft. Depress the Locking Device, against Spring tension, and slide the Yoke onto the shaft.

Release the Locking Device and move the Yoke ahead or back until the Lock engages into the groove of the shaft.

NEVER allow bale forming pressure to exceed 3200 PSIG. Baling at higher pressures will cause unnecessary strain and premature wear on the Baler and tractor Drive components.

PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE (Fig. 5-6) The Baler is provided with a Pressure Control (Relief) Valve to limit the hydraulic system pressure to 3400 PSIG. This Valve, located on the front of the Baler, will allow the Rear Door to open (and thereby relieve pressure), if too much material is fed into the baler.

A CAUTION If the pressure, as Indicated on the Pressure Gauge, exceeds 3400 PSIG, replacement of the Pressure Control Valve may be required.

Refer to the Rear Door topic In the Service chapter of this manual for further directives.

ALWAYS orient and attach the PTO Drive with the CV-joint end coupled to the tractor PTO shaft.

A WAR NING BE SURE that the Telescoping PTO Locking Devices are properly secured to both the trac­ tor PTO shaft and the Baler Input Drive Shaft BEFORE starting the tractor engine.

NOTE:

When transporting the Baler, remove the Telescoping PTO Drive from the Baler and store it in or on the towing vehicle.

SAFETY CHAIN & AUXILIARY LIGHTING (Fig. 5-8)

A CAUTION ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on a public high­ way! BE SURE to check with local law enfor­ cement agencies for your own particular regulations. Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem.

Only a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machine, In the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

As required or when desired, the Baler should be equipped with a safety chain and auxiliary lighting for transporting the unit on public highways. The chain should be routed as shown in the illustration. Refer to the Optional Features & Accessories Chapter for order­ ing information. If auxiliary lighting is required or desired, it must be purchased locally.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

A WARNING If a fire should break out: Eject the bale from the Baler IMMEDIATELY, move the Baler up­ wind 30 feet or more (from the ejected bale), shut the tractor engine off and proceed to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher.

There is always the possibility of fire when handling dry forage materials. GEHL Company recommends that, to limit the damage to the Baler and/or tractor in case of a bale fire, at least a five gallon, pressurized water type, fire extinguisher should be mounted on the tractor or Baler.

NOTE: A five gallon extinguisher should be suffi­ cient to put out small fires that are burning the dry material that remains on the Baler, after the bale is ejected. This size extinguisher, however, is insufficient to put out even a small fire in the bale.

A CAUTION The pressurized water fire extinguisher DOES NOT replace the dry chemical fire extin­ guisher on the tractor (If so equipped). NEVER use a water type fire extinguisher on electrical or fuel fires. .

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONS

General (Fig. 6..1) Crop material is picked off the ground by the Four­ Tinebar floating Pickup and fed directly into the Baling Chamber. Chain-driven Rollers, located inside the Baling Chamber, roll and tumble the incoming crop into a round bale. Just before the bale reaches its final size, additional crop is fed into the Baling Chamber creating a bale with a medium density core and a hard outer shell. The hard outer shell helps to reduce set­ tling and provides better weather resistance. Once the proper baling pressure is reached (as indicated by the RED area on the Pressure Gauge) the bale can be

Transmission of Mechanical Power The minimum tractor power required to operate the Baler is SS hp. The Baler Drawbar is vertically adjus­ table and MUST be properly connected to the tractor per details in the Preparing For Field Operations chap­ ter. Mechanical power is transmitted from the tractor PTa, through a Constant Velocity Telescoping PTa Driveline, a Right-angle Drive Gearbox, a Rubber Coupling, a Jackshaft, to the Main Drive Sprockets and Chain. The power is then transmitted by Chains and Sprockets to the (15) Rollers and the Pickup Assembly.

Density Control (Fig. 6-2)

Twi ne Tie Systems

Bale density is monitored by a Hydraulic Pressure Gauge which is located on the right front of the Baler.

As the bale increases in size, it exerts more and more pressure on the Rear Door. The Rear Door is held closed by hydraulic pressure, supplied by the tractor to the Rear Door Cylinders. Since the Pressure Gauge is tapped directly into Rear Door hydraulic system, the Gauge indicates the amount of pressure required to keep the Door closed. Therefore, the Pressure Gauge is used as a guide to regulate bale density and, also, to indicate when to wrap and eject the bale.

The Manual-Electric and Auto-Electric Twine Tie Sys­ tems share many of the same components with the main exception being the Control Box, Switches and inter­ related wiring.

NOTE:

On units equipped with an Auto-Electric Twine Tie system, a Pressure Switch is also tapped into the Rear Door hydraulic system and is therefore regulated by the amount of pressure exerted on the Rear Door Cylinders. Refer to the Twine Tie Systems Functional Description later in this chapter.

In the manual system, control of the Electric Actuator (which, in turn, moves the Twine Tubes from side to side) is performed by the operator by toggling a Switch on the remote mounted Control Box. This feature is also available on the Auto-Electric system but, only while in MANUAL operating mode. In the Auto­ Electric Tie system (when operating in the "AUTO" mode) the entire wrapping and twine cutting operation is controlled automatically.

Also included only in the Auto-Electric system is a Pressure Switch which activates the bale wrapping sequence when hydraulic pressure on the Rear Door Cylinders reaches a predetermined value (the Pressure Switch also activates an Alarm which signals the operator that the wrapping cycle has begun). In the Manual-Electric system, the operator must watch the Pressure Gauge and when it is at the desired pressure, the operator must manually start the wrapping cycle.

(Refer to the Density Control topic earlier in this chap­ ter for additional information regarding the Pressure Gauge.)

Manual-Electric Control The Manual-Electric Twine Tie System Control Box is provided with a single Switch which functions as fol­ lows: Extend/Retract Switch on Control Box

This Switch is a three-position, momentary contact, toggle-type Switch which returns to the "off' position when released. This Switch is provided to allow the operator to extend and retract the Electric Actuator, as necessary, for wrapping the bale with twine.

Move the Toggle upward (and hold it there) to extend the Actuator Rod which, in turn, will move the Twine Tubes to the left; move the Toggle downward (and hold it there) to retract the Actuator Rod which, in turn, will move the Twine Tubes to the right.

Transmission of HydrauliC Power Hydraulic fluid pressure MUST BE provided by the tractor hydraulics system. The tractor's auxiliary con­ trol valve and remote control circuit are used to ac­ tivate the Rear Door Cylinders (for raising and closing the Rear Door) and for holding the Rear Door closed during baling.

The Auto-Electric Twine Tie System Control Box is provided with various components which function as follows: Auto/Off/Manual Switch AUTO position - provides automatic operation of the wrapping System when the RECYCLE Button is pressed.

OFF position - disconnects electrical power to the Control Box (turns the Auto-Electric Twine Tie Sys­ tem "Off") MANUAL position - provides for manual operation of the Actuator (enables the EXTEND/RETRACT Switch) End-wrap Control Turn the Knob on this Control clockwise to increase the number of twine wraps on the bale ends or counterclockwise to decrease the number of twine wraps on the bale ends.

Center-wrap Control Turn the Knob on this Control counterclockwise to increase the number of twine wraps across the bale or clockwise to decrease the number of twine wraps across the bale.

Extend/Retract Switch This Switch is enabled ONLY when the AUTO/OFF/MANUAL Switch is in the MANUAL position and is a momentary contact, toggle-type Switch which returns to the "off" position when released. This Switch is provided to allow the operator to manually extend and retract the Electric Actuator, when desired, and thereby override automatic control of the Actuator.

If the manual override is used and/or the automatic

cycle is interrupted, the Actuator will return automat­ ically to the fully extended position (and continue to cycle) when the RECYCLE Button is pushed.

Recycle (Pushbutton) Switch This Switch is a momentary contact, pushbutton-type Switch which "starts" the wrapping cycle when pressed and returns to a "deactivated" position when released.

If it is desired to wrap the bale BEFORE the Bale Size

Sensor Switch activates the automatic cycle, push and release the RECYCLE Switch Button; this will activate the System and automatically execute one wrapping cycle.

Horn The Horn is provided to inform the operator that the bale has reached a predetermined size (determined by the setting of the Bale Pressure Sensor Switch) and that the wrapping cycle is about to begin. The Horn con­ tinues to sound until the Twine Tubes are in position and ready to feed twine into the bale chamber.

Circuit Breaker

A Pushbutton-type (resetable) Circuit Breaker is provided for protection of the Electric Actuator and Control Box wiring. Do NOT attempt to override the Breaker circuit by holding down on the Pushbutton.

AL WAYS determine and correct the cause of the Breaker trip when resetting is required.

BALING TIPS The following information provides guidelines for using the Baler to get the most out of your crop and investment.

Preparing The Material For Baling

Tailgate Indicator

The material, to be baled, can be prepared in a number of different ways, depending on the operator's preference and available equipment. Except for windrow size, a general rule to follow is to prepare the material the same way as you would for rectangular baling.

This Indicator is NOT in use on RB 1310 model Balers.

In Cycle Indicator This Indicator will be "on" during the entire wrapping cycle and "off" all other times.

The most desirable bales result when the material is properly cut and conditioned and then formed into even, full, Pickup-width windrows.

Cutting the Crop Cut the crop as long as possible. Excessively dry, short, slippery and/or thin crops, as are sometimes encountered in certain grasses and straw, can be suc­ cessfully baled, providing that the material is of suffi­ cient length to hold the bale together. However, when baling crops such as these, difficulties in building Gauge pressure above 2500 PSIG and in wrapping the bale with twine at the end of baling cycle, may be experienced, regardless of cut crop length. Refer to the Baling topic, later in this chapter, for more details.

BALING NOTE: To avoid damaging the Baler Drive Line, slow tractor RPM to 1400 or less BEFORE engaging PTO. Then, engage PTO slowly. In addition, NEVER disengage PTO quickly with a full bale in the Chamber.

The mass of a rotating bale can cause a complete Drive Line reversal. When using a tractor equipped with a PTO brake mechanism, BE SURE to slow-down the engine speed BEFORE disengaging the PTO.

Use the following procedure as a guide for proper baling techniques.

1.

Conditioning the Crop Over-conditioning the crop is NOT advisable, par­ ticularly if the bales are going to be stored outside, because excessive shattering of the stems will invite moisture absorption, which can lead to spoilage.

Under-conditioning can also cause spoilage, par­ ticularly when baling cane-type crops and other heavy­ stemmed materials.

After transporting the Baler to the field, adjust the Pickup height according to crop conditions and ground contour. Refer to the Pickup Height and Pickup Flotation topics in the Adjustments chapter of this manual, for details.

NOTE: The Pickup Assembly MUST be carried up off of the ground at all times. Operating with the Pickup too low to the ground, will result in excessive Tine wear or breakage and possible damage to the Pickup Strip­ pers and Headers, Cams and Cam Bearings.

2.

Move the Baler into position with respect to the windrow. Start the PTO, bring the tractor RPM up to the desired operating speed and begin baling.

Windrowing the Crop

3.

Bales of consistently uniform size and density can best be produced by starting with windrows of proper size.

Windrows should be reasonably even in height and width. Windrows with high center crowns result in more material in the center of the bale, producing a bale with loose ends and making it more difficult to wrap the bale with twine.

Bale the driest crops first (usually the outside of the field) traveling in the same direction that the rake or windrower traveled so that the crop is picked up in a head-first position.

When baling hay in full, Pickup-width windrows, the average operating speed of the tractor should be approximately 4 to 6 mph. At this speed, the Pickup will gather the windrow into the Baler with the least amount of crop agitation.

5.

When baling narrow windrows (24" or less), start forming the bale by driving down the center for approximately the first quarter of the bale. For the next quarter of the bale, weave back and forth across the windrow, so the crop is distributed evenly across the entire width of the Bale Cham­ ber. Discontinue the weaving pattern for the last one half of the bale and concentrate on feeding the material, alternately, into the sides of the Pickup. The bales that are formed in this manner, are more uniform than bales that are formed by continuously weaving, during the entire baling cycle.

NOTE: Proper conditioning can best be ac­ complished using either a self-propelled windrower or pull-type mower conditioner.

If full, Pickup-width windrows (36"-48") cannot be produced, the crop should be formed into windrows of 24" or less. Windrows between 24" and 36" wide should be avoided because, as the Baler operator cros­ ses the windrow from side to side to crowd material into the ends of the Pickup, the center is being con­ tinuously fed and, as a result, the bale will be barrel­ shaped with lower density at the ends and higher density at the center.

NOTE:

If windrows are generally wider than the Pickup width (greater than 48''), installation of a Crow­ der Wheels Kit is recommended. Refer to the Optional Features &Accessories chapter for additional informa­ tion.

Unplugging

A DANGER DO NOT attempt to unplug the Pickup area while the PTO Is engaged. In addition, NEVER attempt to manually clear debris or foreign matter from any other part of the Baler, while It Is running. Failure to heed, could result In death or serious bodily Injuryl ALWAYS exer­ cise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE attempting to unplug the Pickup or manually clear debris from It! If plugging occurs between the Pickup and Baling

Chamber and/or the Pickup Drive Clutch is slipping, STOP forward travel IMMEDIATELY and disengage the PTO. Then, reduce engine RPM and re-engage the PTO. This will normally clear the Pickup. If NOT, repeat this sequence, as necessary, to clear the plug. If repeating this sequence, several times, does NOT clear the plug, open the gate and eject the bale, because the ratchet clutch will NOT drive pick-up backwards. If the plug still does NOT clear, exercise the MAN­ DATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE leaving the tractor to remove the plug by hand.

When resuming Baler operation, adjust the ground travel speed; a slower speed may be required in heavy crops. In some conditions, it may also be necessary to remove one or both of the Springs on the Hay Hold­ down, to improve feeding. If plugging continues, check all of the Pickup Strippers to make sure that they are parallel and evenly spaced. Also, check the angle of the Baler to make sure that the Twinebox is parallel to the ground. If desired or as required, readjust the Hitch Plate to change the Baler angle so that the Twinebox is parallel to the ground or angled slightly to the rear. (Refer to the Preparing for Field Operation chapter for more details.)

NOTE:

Do NOT allow any stones or other debris to enter the Baler or damage to internal parts may result.

If a foreign object is seen entering the Baler, IMMEDI­ A TEL Y disengage the PTO to stop the Baler, open the Rear Door approximately 8" (or just enough to allow the object to pass through) and then slowly re-engage the PTO. After the object falls out, close the Rear Door and resume baling.

Using Th e Pressure Gauge For Density Control (See Fig . 6-2) In order to produce dense, uniform, 52-inch diameter bales, a minimum of 1000 PSIG of pressure MUST be maintained on the Rear Door, throughout the entire baling cycle. A Pressure Gauge is provided on the Baler to monitor the amount of pressure being applied to the Rear Door. Watch the Gauge as you are baling and maintain the pressure at 1000 to 2400 PSIG, (in the GREEN area or above), during the entire baling cycle.

As the bale starts reaching its final size and density, the pressure will increase from its previous (more sta­ bilized) indication. When the Gauge Indicator reaches 2600 to 3200 PSIG, (the RED area), the bale is formed and ready for wrapping with twine.

NOTE: In some dry and/or brittle materials, it may NOT be possible to reach the final bale pressure (the RED area on the Pressure Gauge).

A CAUTIO N NEVER allow the baling pressure to exceed 3200 PSIG (above the RED area on the Pres­ sure Gauge). Baling at too high a pressure places excessive strain on the entire Baler and can cause Drive Chain failure.

Wrapping Bale With Twine (Fig. 6-4 & See Fig. 6-2) The bale can be wrapped with twine any time after the mass of material in the Bale Chamber starts rolling.

Usually, the bale should be wrapped only after the Pressure Gauge Indicator is in the RED area (2600 to 3200 PSIG). Refer to "Using The Pressure Gauge For Density Control" topic above, for details regarding baling pressures.

NOTE:

The following procedure is the MANUAL sequence which is accomplished automatically by the Auto-Electric Tie system and activated automatically by a Pressure Switch. The entire process of wrapping the bale with twine is done from the tractor seat.

The position of the Needle on the Hydraulic Pressure Gauge can be used as a fairly accurate guide for deter­ mining when to stop baling and start wrapping the bale with twine. When the desired pressure is reached, stop Baler forward travel. Then, using the Toggle Switch on the Control Box, activate the Actuator to position the Twine Tubes so they are centered and vertical.

NOTE: By moving the Twine Tubes to the middle of the Baler, appropriate lengths of twine are brought out for starting to wrap a new bale.

Next, drive forward again to take in a small amount of material to help start feeding the twine into the Baler.

A DANGER NEVER attempt to manually feed twine or material into the Baler. Material feeds Into the Baler faster than you can react to release It. Also, NEVER attempt to clear debris or any· thing else from the Baler while It Is running.

Failure to heed can result In death or serious Injury. ALWAYS exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE attempting to manually clear debris from the Baler!

When the twine can be seen moving into the Twine Tubes, stop Baler forward travel. Allow the twine to make at least one full wrap in this location and then move the Twine Tubes to the left side.

NOTE:

Normally, the bale can be adequately tied with two wraps of twine on the left side, several wraps across the center of the bale and two wraps on the right side. If the material being baled is slippery, it will help to place two wraps of twine on the center of the bale before moving to the left side in order to prevent the twine from sliding off the end of the bale.

Ejecting The Bale (Without Accessory Bale Bumper)

Back-up Baler a minimum of 15 feet. This provides for pull-ahead clearance, after the bale is ejected, so the Rear Door will close without hitting the bale.

The PTO MUST be left engaged while ejecting the bale. However, if desired, the PTO may be operated at a slower speed.

NOTE:

Moving the Twine Tube all the way to the left engages and locks-open the Twine Cutoff Jaws.

A DANGER BE SURE everyone Is clear of the Rear Door BEFORE attempting to open or close It.

Activate the tractor hydraulics control lever and fully extend the Door Cylinders to open the Rear Door.

After the bale is discharged, by the rotating Rollers, pull the Baler ahead, about 10 feet, to provide clearance between the Rear Door and the ejected bale.

Activate the tractor hydraulics control lever and retract the Door Cylinders to close the Rear Door.

After the Door has closed, continue to activate the control lever, to build up pressure, until the Pressure Gauge reading is in the GREEN area or above.

The following procedure should be followed, in the sequence given, for ejecting a bale from a Baler that is equipped with the accessory Bale Bumper:

NOTE:

With the accessory Bale Bumper installed, the Baler does NOT have to be moved, to provide for pull-ahead clearance after the bale is ejected. The Bumper causes the ejected bale to roll away from the Baler, about 10 feet on level ground, which is far enough to allow the Rear Door to close, without strik­ ing the ejected bale.

DIFFICULT BALING CONDITIONS It is sometimes difficult to form bales when the crop is exceptionally short. slick and/or dry. Oats. straw and corn stalks are some examples. Use the following methods to help overcome difficult bale forming problems:

Material Preparation - Cut the material as long as possible. The longer the material, the easier it is for the bale to form and stay together after it is ejected.

- Prepare heavy, tight, even windrows. Fluffy, uneven windrows can cause feeding problems, requiring reduced ground speed until the bale is rolling.

- Rake several smaller windrows into a full Pickup­ width size windrow.

Operating Characteristics - Increase the ground speed, to maintain a constant flow of feed into the Baling Chamber.

- After the bale begins to rotate in the Bale Chamber, reduce PTO speed. This will reduce the bale tum­ bling action and therefore, cut down on material loss.

BE SURE everyone Is clear of the Rear Door BEFORE attempting to open or close it.

- Use more wraps of twine, than used in normal bale wrapping, but, do NOT wrap too close to the bale ends. Move the twine Guide Rod(s) in, toward the center hole(s), if the twine is slipping off the end(s) of the bale.

2.

THROAT GUIDE BAFFLE (See Fig. 6-4)

Activate the tractor hydraulics control lever and fully extend the Door Cylinders to open the Rear Door.

3.

The bale is discharged, by the rotating Rollers, onto the Bale Bumper, which causes the bale to roll away from the Baler about 10 feet (3 meters) on level ground.

4.

After the bale has been ejected, activate the trac­ tor hydraulics control lever and retract the Door Cylinders, to close the Rear Door. After the Door has closed, continue to activate the control lever, to build up Rear Door pressure, until the Pressure Gauge reading is in the GREEN area or above.

For improved performance when baling dry short materials, like straw and grass hays, use the Throat Guide Baffle, supplied with the Baler. The Baffle is stored across the front of the Baler, behind the Twine Tie Guard.

When installed, the Baffle prevents crop material from falling back out of the Bale Chamber and onto the rear of the Pickup assembly. This helps to prevent plugging at the rear of the Pickup area. Adjust the Throat Guide Baffle for 1/16" clearance to the Roller outside diameter.

NOTE: ONL Y use the Throat Guide Baffle when baling very dry straw or short, dry and grassy hay. The Baffle prevents the bale from bulging out of the throat area and possibly plugging the area at the rear of the Pickup. The Throat Guide Baffle MUST be removed when baling normal materials, to prevent material build-up, which can cause driveline loading and pos­ sible fire.

BALE HANDLING & STORAGE Because the bales made with the Baler are cylindrical and very heavy, special care MUST be exercised when ejecting and storing them, to keep them from starting to roll. When the bale is moved, make sure the original (flat) bottom of the bale remains at the bottom, to help prevent rolling.

When moving a bale to a storage area, observe the following recommendations, to minimize crop loss: 1.

Select a well-drained area, with complete ex­ posure to the sunlight, for storing the bale. Do NOT store the bale on plastic sheeting, or a similar material, because it will hold pockets of water.

2.

If possible, place the ends of the bale in a north and south direction, so that the sun can dry-out the cylindrical surface of the bale, as it travels from east to west.

3.

Where space allows, set several bales in a row with their ends pushed tightly together, to form a long cylinder. Make sure that you do NOT form a water dam, by using to many bales in a row, without skipping a space. Also, make sure to maintain a clear path for the water to travel away from the bales.

4.

Maintain enough distance between rows so that one row does NOT overshadow the other and cut down its exposure to full sunlight.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION

Rubber Coupler The Drive Line is protected from high shock loads by a Rubber Coupler on the Output Shaft of the Gearbox.

The Coupler functions as a cushioning shock absorber.

In general, keep the PTO running at all times while baling. Since the Baler runs with NO pressure on the material until the bale becomes full-size, there is NO need to stop the Baler. Continuously running the PTO while baling, as opposed to stopping and starting, also helps to reduce parts wear and early failure.

NOTE: To avoid damaging the Baler Drive Line, slow tractor RPM to 1400 or less BEFORE engaging PTO. Then, engage PTO slowly. In addition, NEVER disengage the PTO quickly with a full bale in the Chamber. The mass of a rotating bale may cause a complete Drive Line reversal. When using a tractor equipped with a PTO brake mephanism, BE SURE to slow-down the engine speed BEFORE disengaging the PTO.

Pickup Clutch (See Fig. 6-1) Overload protection to the Pickup Drive is provided by the ratchet-type Pickup Clutch. The Clutch is designed to slip when the Pickup becomes plugged.

CHAPTER 7 ADJUSTMENTS The Baler has been designed and factory adjusted to function properly under most field operating condi­ tions. However, due to the wide range of operating conditions encountered, some additional readjust­ ments may be required.

A CAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform any adjust­ ments on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

PICKUP HEIGHT (Figs. 7-1 & 7-2) NOTE: The Baler Pickup should ALWAYS be run as high above the ground as possible while still being able to pick up all of the crop.

A Crank Handle, Chain and Ratchet Stop Mechanism is provided on the right side of the Baler for making Pickup operating height adjustments. The Ratchet Stop provides a means for locking the Pickup at the adjusted height. A Chain, connected between the Crank Handle and Pickup, helps support the right side of the Pickup.

NOTE:

A short length of Chain is also provided on the left side of the Baler to help support the left side of the Pickup. Detach the Chain from the Hook provided, BEFORE attempting to adjust the Pickup height. After the Pickup height is adjusted, rehook the Chain so that the Pickup is supported evenly on both sides.

To raise the Pickup, unhook the Chain on the left side of the Pickup and then, turn the Crank Handle clock­ wise. The Ratchet Stop wi11lock the Handle, in one of four positions, nearest to the desired height setting.

Then, rehook the Chain on the left side of the Pickup.

The Baler is provided with a tension adjustable, float­ ing Pickup. For normal operating conditions on rela­ tively smooth ground, the recommended Pickup Flotation Spring tension is approximately 30 pounds (14 kilograms) of lift required at the cross pipe on the Hay Hold-down.

For extremely rocky or rough ground conditions, in­ crease Pickup Flotation Spring tension to allow the Pickup to float easier. To increase Spring tension, proceed as follows:

On right side of Pickup, loosen the 1/2" Nut and tum the 1/2" Hex Tap Bolt clockwise to lengthen the Spring. After the proper adjustment is made, resecure the Tap Bolt with the 1/2" Nut. On left side or Pickup, tum the Lock Nut, located on the Spring mounting 3/8" Eye Bolt, counterclockwise (as viewed from the bottom of the Baler) to lengthen the Spring.

To adjust the accessory Gauge Wheel height, remove the (2) 1/2 x 1-3/4" Cap Screws, Lock and Plain Washers securing the Spindle Assembly to the Pickup Right Side Assembly. Three sets of holes are provided in the Spindle Assembly to obtain proper Pickup Tine ground clearance.

TWINE TENSION (See Fig. 7-1) This unit is provided with a Twine Tensioner Assembly for increasing or decreasing Twine Tension. After the first few bales have been tied and the twine cut, it may be necessary to adjust the Twine Tensioner so that 22" (560 mm) of twine extends from each of the Twine Delivery Tubes. Individual Wing Nut and Spring mechanisms are provided on the Twine Tensioner to increase or decrease the amount of tension on each length of twine. Turning the Wing Nut clockwise, which increases twine tension, will result in shortening the amount of twine extending from the Tube; turning the Wing Nut counterclockwise will result in lengthen­ ing the amount of twine.

DRIVE CHAIN TENSION Main, Front Lower, Rear Door Connec­ tor & Rear Door Rollers Drive Chains (Fig. 7-4) The Baler Main Drive, Front Lower Drive, Rear Door Connector Drive and Rear Door Rollers Drive Chains are provided with adjustable, spring-loaded Chain Ten­ sioners and Idler Sprockets. Proper Chain tension is obtained when the Chain Tensioner Spring length is 7-1/4" (185 mm), as shown.

To adjust the Spring length, loosen the Jam Nut and then, using a 15/16" wrench, turn the Spring Guide (in or out) until the proper Spring length is obtained. BE SURE to retighten the Jam Nut against the Spring Guide, after making the adjustment.

TWINE TIE SYSTEM Twine Placement (Figs. 7-6 & 7-7) To adjust twine placement on the right hand side of the Baler: 1.

Loosen the hardware attaching the Twine Mount­ ing Plate to the Crosstube assembly.

2.

Slide the assembly right or left to obtain the desired position.

NOTE:

The twine placement on the right hand side can be predetermined by measuring the distance be­ tween the right inside edge of the bale chamber and the center of the Clamp Jaw Pivot Rod.

3.

Retighten the Twine Mounting Plate attaching hardware.

To adjust twine placement on the left hand side of the Baler: 1.

Completely extend the Actuator.

2.

Loosen the hardware on the Actuator Adjustment Bracket.

3.

Place the Twine Arm to the desired position and retighten the Adjustment Bracket hardware.

Pickup Drive Chain (See Figs. 7-4 & 7-5) The Baler Pickup Drive Chain is provided with an adjustable Idler Sprocket for setting proper Chain ten­ sion. Proper Chain tension is determined when 1/4" (6 mm) of deflection is present on the strand of Chain opposite the Idler Sprocket.

Chain tension can be adjusted by loosening the Idler Sprocket mounting hardware and then sliding the Sprocket up or down in the guide until the proper setting is obtained. BE SURE to retighten the Idler Sprocket mounting hardware after adjusting the Chain tension.

Clamp Jaws (See Figs. 7-6 & 7-7) Latch Position To properly adjust the Clamp Jaw Latch position, fully extend the Actuator. Then, adjust the Spring Slide Rod so that the Clamp Jaw Pivot Rod rotates below the Catch on the Trip assembly. When this position is obtained, tighten the Jam Nuts.

Latch Tension To adjust the Clamp Jaw Latch tension, rotate the Locknut on the Clamp Jaw Pivot Rod. The tighter the Spring is compressed, the greater the tension on the twine.

Twine tube "Pause" Placement (Fig. 7-8) NOTE: If Control Box does NOT have an external Adjustment Knob (as shown), dealer MUST be con­ tacted to perform the following adjustment.

With tractor engine running, push the "Recycle" But­ ton and observe where or at what position the Twine Arm pauses. If the pause is before the Clamp Jaws are at least halfway open, turn the Adjustment Knob clock­ wise about 10·. Test this adjustment by recycling the system. Continue to readjust, as necessary.

NOTE:

The following information applies only to a Baler which is equipped with an Auto-Electric Twine Tie system.

Delay Switch Position (See Fig. 7-7) Stroke the Actuator to move the Twine Arm to within 6" to 8" of the Cutoff Trip Arm. Then, with the Delay Switch Clamping hardware loose, rotate the Switch assembly clockwise until the Roller causes the Switch contacts to just transfer (click). Then, tighten the Clamping hardware.

CHAPTER 8 LUBRICATION GENERAL INFORMATION

A CAUTION NEVER attempt to lubricate the Baler when any part of It Is in motion. ALWAYS, BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUT­ DOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to lubricate the Baler.

GEARBOX NOTE: On a routine basis after every 100 hours of operation, check the fluid level in the Baler Gearbox.

The level should be maintained, with a sufficient amount of SAE 90 Gear Lube, so that it just starts to run out of the Inspection Plug opening at the back of the Gearbox. Add fluid, as necessary, through the Gearbox Inspection Plug opening.

The Gearbox should be checked occasionally for oil drips and dust accumulation around the Seals which would indicate that the Seals are leaking. Oil which is tan in color and foams excessively indicates that it has water present in it. However, unless rust spots are visible inside the Gearbox, the fluid does NOT require replacement.

NOTE:

ON an annual basis, drain, flush out and refill the Gearbox with new SAE 90 Gear Lube. Do NOT overfill the Gearbox; only fill to the bottom of the Inspection Plug opening.

ROLLER CHAINS & PTO DRIVE SHIELDS Lubricate all Roller Chains every 6 to 8 hours of opera­ tion using a good grade of foaming aerosol lubricant, such as NAPA Chain and Cable Lubricant. This type of lubricant increases the life of the Chain 3 to 4 times over those lubricated at 8 hour intervals with new or used motor oil. The recommended method is to spray the entire length of Chain on the center of the Rollers.

It is better to lubricate Chains when they are warm (after use, rather than before).

NOTE: For Balers equipped with the accessory Automatic Chain Oiler, fill Oil Reservoir Tank as often as required with a lightweight oil (SAE 10 or equivalent). Usually, a full Tank should provide ade­ quate lubrication for producing 100 or more bales.

In addition to the Roller Chains, apply oil or foaming aerosol lubricant to the Telescoping PTO Drive Shields.

NOTE: At the end of the harvesting season, coat al/ of the Roller Chains (and any other unpainted, exposed metal) with oil before placing the Baler into storage.

SEALED BEARINGS Sealed Bearings are lubricated for life and relubrica­ tion is NOT required, NOR should it be attempted.

GREASING

General NOTE: Use an SAE multi-purpose, Lithium base grease for all locations.

Clean, inspect and repack the Wheel Bearings at least once a year.

Grease Fittings NOTE:

Grease all Fittings at the intervals of opera­ tion listed. Also grease aI/ Fittings before and after storing the Baler and as otherwise listed.

Wipe dirt from the Fitting, before greasing it, to prevent any dirt from being forced into the Bearings or pivots. Replace any missing or defective fittings, when noted. To minimize dirt build-up, avoid excessive greasing.

CHAPTER 9 SERVICE GENERAL INFORMATION

A CAUTION BEFORE starting to do ANY Service routines on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

The Bearing can be removed from the Shaft by loosen­ ing the Set Screw and then tapping on a punch, which is placed in the drift pin hole, to loosen the Collar.

Install Bearings with self-locking Collars in the fol­ lowing manner:

1.

Place the Bearing and Collar on the Shaft with the cam surfaces next to each other. Tighten the bolts on the Bearing Retainers.

2.

Mate the cam, of the Lock Collar, with the cam, of the Bearing inner ring.

3.

Press the Lock Collar against the Bearing's wide inner ring cam and tum it, in the direction of Shaft rotation, until it tightly engages. Tighten the Collar further, by tapping on a punch inserted in the drift pin hole.

NOTE:

The following information is also referred to in the Troubleshooting chapterofthis manual. It should be understood that all services, detailed in this chap­ ter, are Owner-Operator responsibilities. Where indi­ cated, certain service routines should only be carried-out by (or under the direction of) an authorized GEHL Dealer or GEHL Company representative.

Sealed Ball Bearing Replacement (Fig. 9-1)

NOTE:

Sealed Ball Bearings are used on various Shafts on the Baler. This type of Bearing is generally retained with a Self-locking Eccentric Collar. The Lock Collar has a counterbored recess, which is eccentric with the Collar bore. This eccentric recess engages or mates with an eccentric end of the Bearing inner ring, when the Bear­ ing is assembled on the Shaft. The Bearing is engaged, on the inner ring cam, by the Collar. This assembly grips the Shaft tightly with a positive binding action that increases with use. The Collar Set Screw provides supplementary locking.

4.

To avoid damaging the Lock Collar, do NOT overtighten it.

Tighten the Set Screw in the Lock Collar.

Gib Key The Gib Key, a tapered key with a tang on the thick end, is a combination locking device and hub retainer.

The Gib Key will lock the hub in place and retain it from turning. The hub MUST have a matching tapered keyway for use with the Gib Key.

Removal (Fig. 9·2) 1.

Remove paint from the Shaft on both sides of the hub.

2.

Loosen the Set Screws.

3.

Drive hub away from Key head, using a large punch or drift. Make sure that Gib Key does NOT move with hub.

4.

Pull Key, using a pinch bar or tapered punch.

5.

Slide hub from Shaft.

Fig. 9-2 When installing a new Gib Key into the Sprocket hub, it may be necessary to file the Gib Key to obtain a good Key length engagement. When doing this, BE SURE to file the bottom side of the Key, NOT the tapered top side.

When filing, use a hand file and use a smooth even motion to take enough material off. Do NOT use any type of power grinder on the Gib Key or a poor fit can result.

A Gib Key has a taper of 0.0104 in/in. To check taper, when filing, put two marks on the Key, 1 inch apart, and use a caliper to measure the taper.

NOTE:

Replace the Drive Chain when the Chain Tensioner for that particular Chain reaches its limit of adjustment. Do NOT shorten the Chain by removing a Link (or Links).

Chain Removal & Installation All five Drive Chains on the Baler are provided with Spring Clip, type Connecting Links to aid in Chain removal and installation.

NOTE:

BEFORE attempting to remove the Spring Clip,type Connecting Link from a Drive Chain (to remove the Chain for service), release all tension on the Chain by loosening its Chain Tensioner. Also, BE SURE to adjust the Chain for proper tension, after installing a cleaned and re,oiled (or a new) Chain.

Refer to the Adjustments chapter in this manual, for details.

FIg. 9-5 Sprocket wear is most often caused by an excessively worn Drive Chain. Factors such as operating condi, tions (dirt and temperature), amount of power trans, mitted, operating speed of the chain and lubrication (or lack of it) influence the life of the Chain.

To effectively lubricate the Chain joints, lubricant should be delivered to the spaces between the side bars.

It is also essential, that an adequate lubricant film be retained between the rollers, bushings and pins to maintain a flexible Chain. If a Chain becomes stiff, remove it and soak it in a solvent to loosen dirt and corrosion from the joints. Then, wash the Chain in clean solvent and soak it overnight in oil so the oil can penetrate between all joints.

A Chain which has worn 3% (l.03 times its original length), should be removed and replaced. To determine the amount of wear on a particular Chain, an easy check is to measure 10 Links of the Chain in a straight line, from the center of one pin to the center of the 10th following pin. For a #60 Chain, the distance should be 7,1/2" to 7,3/4" (maximum) and for a #80 Chain, it should be 10" to 10,5/16" (maximum). If the distance measured is greater than the "maximum", replace the Chain.

Removing Gearbox .

To remove the Gearbox from the Baler, remove the Telescoping PTO Drive and proceed as follows: 1.

Release the Chain tension and then uncouple the Main Drive Chain. Refer to the Drive Chains topic in the Adjustments chapter and in this chap­ ter, for detailed instructions on Drive Chain removal.

2.

Remove the hardware securing the Twine Tie Guard to the Baler and remove the Guard.

3.

Loosen the 4" Clamp on the lackshaft Shield, slide the Clamp toward the Rubber Coupler Shield and then remove the lackshaft Shield (The Shield is split on the bottom to allow removal).

4.

Remove (10) 5/16 x 3/4 Flanged Head Locking Cap Screws and the Rubber Coupler Shield.

5.

Remove the (3) 5/8 x 2-1/2" Cap Screws and Lock Nuts securing the Splined Coupler (Gearbox side of the Rubber Coupler Assembly) to the Rubber Coupler Ring.

6.

Remove the (4) 1/2 x 1-1/2 Cap Screws and Lock Washers securing the Mount Plate to the Gear­ box. Then, slide the Mount Plate (with plastic PTO Safety Shield) forward and off the Gearbox.

MAIN DRIVE JACKSHAFT & RUBBER COUPLER Power, from the Baler Gearbox, is transmitted to the Main Drive Chain and Sprockets through the Rubber Coupler and Main Drive Jackshaft. Not only does the Rubber Coupler provide a means of connecting the Gearbox Output Shaft to the Jack shaft, but it also provides cushioning from high shock loads due to en­ gaging and disengaging the PTO.

NOTE: The Jackshaft and Gearbox Output Shaft MUSTbe maintained in proper alignment at ALL times.

Anytime the Jackshaft or Gearbox has been removed, proper alignment MUSTbe re-established during reas­ sembly.

Jackshaft Alignment (Fig. 9-7) When installing the Jackshaft, maintain a distance of 4-1/8" (105 mm) between the end of the Jackshaft and the Bearing Support Plate as shown in the illustration.

NOTE: Do NOT lose any of the Shims when remov­ ing the Gearbox mounting Bolts in step 7. The Shims are used to obtain proper alignment between the Gear­ box Output Shaft andJackshaft. Refer to the Jackshaft Alignment topic later in this chapter for more details.

7.

Check for parallel alignment (within 1/32" vertically and horizontally) between the Jackshaft and the Gear­ box Output Shaft (it may be necessary to Shim and/or to twist the Gearbox, in order to obtain parallel align­ ment). Once aligned and BEFORE tightening the (6) Coupler bolts, measure the total runout of the Jack­ shaft.

NOTE:

When measuring for total runout, the Main Drive Chain MUST be disconnected and the Gearbox Input Shaft MUSTbe rotated by hand in order to obtain accurate results.

Remove the (4) 1/2 x 1-1/4 Cap Screws and Lock Washers located at the bottom of the Gearbox and then remove the Gearbox and all Shims. Remove the Splined Coupler from the Gearbox Output Shaft (Coupler has a sliding fit on Shaft).

Installing Gearbox 8.

To install the Gearbox, reverse the steps for "Removing Gearbox" and take into account the following noted information.

NOTE: Refer to the "Main Drive Jackshaft & Rub­ ber Coupler" topiC, next in this chapter, to obtain proper alignment between the Gearbox Output Shaft and the Main Drive Jackshaft. Also, BE SURE to properly adjust the Main Drive Chain tension following the details in the Adjustments chapter.

Fill Gearbox to the proper level with SAE 90 Gear Lube. Refer to the Lubrication chapter for additional details.

Mount a dial indicator in a manner which will allow the indicator pickup to rest on the Jackshaft, 9" (229 mm) in from the Bearing Support Plate, as shown.

Slowly rotate the Jackshaft while observing the in­ dicator needle. The total runout MUST NOT exceed 0.027". After tightening the (6) Coupler bolts, recheck the runout.

NOTE:

Often, the runout can be reduced by loosen­ ing (3) of the Coupler Bolts 1/2 turn and then tapping on the Jackshaft in the proper direction. BE SURE to retighten the (3) Coupler Bolts, after the Jackshaft is within the 0.027" (maximum) runout limit.

PICKUP ASSEMBLY The Pickup should be inspected on a routine basis every 100 hours of operation. The following areas should be inspected:

Pickup Clutch (See Fig. 9-5) Included in the ratchet-type Pickup Clutch are (16) spring-loaded Cams which provide a preset torque out­ put of approximately 442 ft-Ib (600 Nm). The Clutch is NOT adjustable. If the Clutch does slip while baling (because of a Pickup overload), reduce the PTa speed (and therefore the Pickup Drive Speed) and usually, the Baler will unplug itself and the Clutch will stop slipping.

NOTE: If the Clutch continues to slip or if it be­ comes jammed, it is recommended that the Baler be taken to an authorized GEHL dealer for removal, repair and/or replacement.

Pickup Tines (Fig. 9-8) Check for broken or bent Tines. Straighten bent Tines, if possible. Replace a broken Tine as follows: 1.

Loosen the (4) 5/16 x 3/4 Cap Screws securing the Stripper(s) nearest to the broken Tine and remove the Stripper(s).

2.

Remove and retain the 5/16 x 2 Flange Head Cap Screw and Lock Nut securing the Tine Holder to the Tine Bar.

3.

Remove the Tine Holder and broken Tine.

4.

Install the new Tine in reverse order of removal.

Tighten Tine Holder Flanged Lock Nut to 18 ft-Ib.

Pickup Cam Bearings (See Fig. 9-8) Check that the Lock Nuts on the Pickup Cam Bearings are tightly secured. The M12 (metric fine thread) Lock Nuts MUST BE torqued to 55 ft-Ib. If a Cam Bearing is removed or replaced, BE SURE that the Special Hardened Washers are installed between the Cam Bearing and Tine Bar.

Pickup Drive Shaft & Spiders (Fig. 9-9) Check the Gib Keys securing the Pickup Spiders to the Pickup Drive Shaft. The Gib Keys MUST be tight and properly installed, to avoid severely damaging the Pickup, if the Key(s) should come out during opera­ tion. Refer to the Gib Key topic at the beginning of this chapter, for proper installation procedures.

- Rear Door Cylinders, Control (Relief) Valve and Hydraulic Hoses and Fittings for external leaks.

Tighten or replace Hoses and Fittings, as necessary.

NOTE: If the Baler hydraulic system does NOT hold a Gauge pressure of 1000 to 2000 PSIG for 20 seconds, or more, with cool oil, an internal malfunction is likely and the Baler should be taken into your Gehl dealer for testing and repair.

A CAUTION Hydraulic System testing and repair should only be attempted by (or under the direction of) an authorized GEHL equipment dealer.

REAR DOOR (Fig. 9-10) The Rear Door should be inspected on a routine basis every 100 hours of operation.

Check the: - Rear Door Pivots for adequate lubrication and ease of operation. The Door should open and close smoothly with out any binding.

- Cylinders and Cylinder Locks for proper operation.

The Cylinders should extend and retract smoothly, without any binding and the Cylinder Locks should engage and disengage, without any restrictions or binding.

A WARNING Do NOT test for hydraulic fluid leaks with your bare hands; use a piece of cardboard or wood for testing. Escaping fluid under pressure can be Invisible and can penetrate the skin which will cause a serious Injuryl If escaping fluid Is Injected Into your skin, see a doctor at once.

Injected fluid MUST be surgically removed by a doctor fam·lllar with this type of Injury or gangrene may result. Remove all pressure from the Hoses, using the tractor hydraulic controls, BEFORE attempting to service the Baler Rear Door hydrauliC system.

A WARNING Inflating or servicing tires can be dangerous.

Whenever pOSSible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires. In addition, do NOT place fingers on tire bead during Inflation; serious Injury or amputation could result! In any event, to avoid possible fatal or serious Injury, follow the safety precautions below: • BE SURE the Rim Is clean and free of rust.

Lubricate both the tire beads and rim flan­ ges with a soap solution. Do NOT use 011 or grease.

• Use a Clip-on tire chuck with a remote hose and gauge which allows you to stand clear of the tire while Inflating It. • NEVER Inflate beyond 35 PSI (240 kPa) to seat the beads. If beads have NOT seated by the time the pressure reaches 35 PSI, deflate the assembly, reposition the tire on the rim, re-Iubricate both parts and re­ Inflate It. Inflation pressure beyond 35 PSI with unseated beads may break the bead or rim with explosive force sufficient to cause fatal or serious injury.

CHAPTER 10 PRE PARING FOR FIELD OPERATION TRACTOR & DRAWBAR REQUIRE· MENTS

Tractor The tractor, used to operate an RB1310 Baler, MUST have: - a minimum of 55 PTO hp - a 540 RPM PTO - PTO and hitch dimensions conforming to the ASAE Standard - a remote hydraulic output capable of powering a double-acting cylinder - a minimum 54" (1524 mm) clearance between the insides of the tires (front & rear) - an upright exhaust system (to help prevent a pos­ sible fire caused from sparks blowing into the windrow)

To reverse the Hitch Plate. remove the mounting hardware and remount the Hitch Plate. as shown. When properly adjusted and attached to the tractor. the Baler Twinebox should be parallel with the ground or angled slightly to the rear.

A CAUTION The minimum distance, from the tractor PTO to the center of the hitch pin, MUST be 14" (355 mm) to avoid damage to the Telescoping PTO Drive Shaft, when making sharp turns.

The Hitch Plate, bolted to the end of the Baler Draw­ bar, is reversible to enable attaching the Baler to a tractor equipped with either, a "low" drawbar [13-17" (330-430 mm) from the ground] or a "high" drawbar [17-21" (430-533 mm) from the ground].

ATTACHMENT TO TRACTOR NOTE:

If the tractor is equipped with a 3-point hitch, raise the lower arms to their maximum height (or remove them) to avoid interference with the Telescop­ ing PTO Drive on the Baler.

A CAUTION NEVER connect a 540 RPM Baler to a 1000 RPM tractor PTO. Check the RPM Warning Decal on the PTO Shield BEFORE connecting the Baler to the tractor.

Attach the Baler Drawbar to the tractor drawbar using a 3/4" or 7/8" diameter locking hitch pin that has a positive retaining device. To prevent crop material from catching on the hitchpin, it is recommended that the hitchpin be installed with the head-end down. After the connection is made, remove the Hitchjack and secure it to the "Storage Hub" on the side of the Baler Drawbar.

Drawbar Flap (Fig. 10-3) If the Baler Drawpar is catching and bunching-up the

windrow below the hitch, order and install Drawbar Flap (420-34054) to help eliminate the problem.

velocity joints are NOT designed for use as angled­ gearboxes. Any continuous operation at angles greater than 35", WILL result in shortening Joint life.

NOTE:

AL WAYS orient and attach the PTO Drive with the CV end coupled to the tractor PTO shaft.

PTO Drives are provided with Spring-loaded Locking Devices on each end to positively lock the Drive con­ nections onto the tractor PTO shaft and the Baler Drive Input Shaft. Depress the Locking Device, against the Spring tension, and slide the Yoke onto its respective Drive Shaft. Release the Locking Device and move the Yoke ahead or back until the Lock engages into the groove of its respective shaft.

A WARNING BEFORE starting the tractor engine, BE SURE that the PTO Yokes are positively engaged onto their respective shafts and that the Baler Drawbar Is securely connected to the tractor drawl)ar with a locking hltchpln. Also, BE SURE the tractor PTO Safety Shield Is In place and properly secured and that the Telescop­ Ing PTO Drive rotates freely Inside the Drlv~ Shield Tubes.

Telescoping PTO Drive (Fig. 10-4) The Baler is equipped with a Wide-angle Constant Velocity PTO Drive Shaft. This constant velocity capability while cornering, results in a smooth, quiet running drive line, without power fluctuations.

NOTE: Whether in operation orNOT, the maximum Joint angle MUST NOT exceed 80". Any angle greater than 80", will result in damage to the Joint. Further­ more, in continuous operation, the maximum Joint angle, should be limited to 35". Wide-angle constant

HYDRAULIC CONNECTIONS NOTE: The tractor MUST have a remote hydraulic output capable of operating the Rear Door, double-ac­ ting, Hydraulic Cylinders.

Install the appropriate quick-disconnect fittings, to match your tractor connections, onto the Baler Hydraulic Hoses. The quick-disconnect fittings are to be purchased 10cal~; they are NOT provided with the Baler. Use Loctite ,or equivalent pipe sealing com­ pound, on the fitting threads.

Connect the Hoses to the proper tractor hydraulic out­ lets, start the tractor and operate the remote control valve(s), to extend and retract the Cylinder(s) several times, to purge the air out of the system.

TWINE ROUTING (Figs. 10-5 & 10-6) To thread the Baler with twine, proceed as follows: Place up to four balls of twine in the Twinebox and tie the ends, if desired, for continuous feeding.

NOTE:

ALWAYS tie the outside twine end of the first bal/ to the inside twine end of the next ball, when placing twine bal/s in the Twinebox for continuous feeding.

First & Second Twine Ball Routing Pull the end of the twine from the center of the first ball through the Lower Guide in the Twinebox Side and out to the Twine Tensioner. From there, route the twine through the bushing in the side of the Twine Tie Guard and over to the Glass Guide on top of the Twine Tubes.

NOTE:

To help feed twine through the Twine Tubes, position them so they are in a vertical position.

AI/ow about 12-18" of twine to extend from the Tubes before starting to bale. After the first bale has been tied and the twine cut, the twine (extending from the Tubes) will be held by the Clamp Jaws. The Jaws should provide an 18-22" tail of twine for starting to wrap the next bale.

Third & Fourth Twine Ball Routing Pull the end of the twine from the center of the third ball, through the Guide on the Twinebox Cover, through the Upper Guide in the Twinebox side and out to the Twine Tensioner. From there, route the twine the same as for the first ball, except route the twine through the other Twine Tube.

THROAT GUIDE BAFFLE (Fig. 10-9) For improved performance when baling dry, short materials, like straws and grass hays, install the Throat Guide Baffle, supplied with the Baler. The Baffle is stored on the front of the Baler behind the Twine Tie Guard.

When installed, the Baffle prevents bale material from faIling back out of the Bale Chamber, onto the rear of the Pickup Assembly. This will help prevent plugging at the rear of the Pickup area.

Adjust the Throat Guide Baffle for 1/16 inch clearance to the Roller outside diameter, as shown.

A CAUTION ONLV use the Throat Guide Baffle when baling very dry straw or short, dry grass hays. The Throat Guide Baffle MUST be removed when baling damp to normally moist materials to prevent material build-up which can cause drive line loading and possible fire. Also, BE SURE to use BOTH Rear Door Cylinder Locks when Installing, removing or checking the Baffle. Improper Installation, adjustment or use of the Throat Guide Baffle may cause a fire! Failure to heed, can result In personal Injury or machine damage.

To install the Throat Guide Baffle, proceed as follows: 1.

Raise the Rear Door and engage BOTH Cylinder Locks. BE SURE that the Door is properly sup­ ported and that BOTH Cylinder Locks are in engaged.

2.

Position the Baffle so that there is 1/16" clearance between the edge of the Baffle Angle and the weld seam on the outside diameter of the 15th Roller (the 15th Roller is located just above the Baling Chamber Throat).

3.

Once the proper positioning is obtained, secure the Baffle with the (4) 3/8 x 3/4 Tapping Screws provided. Holes are provided in the Baling Cham­ ber Side Sheets for mounting the Throat Guide Baffle.

4.

Test run the Baler, very slowly, to check for any rubbing. Repeat Steps 1 thru 3, above, if there is any indication of rubbing.

5.

Raise the Rear Door, disengage the Cylinder Locks and lower the Rear Door.

CHAPTER 11 TRA NSPORTING SMV EMBLEM & REFLECTORS (Fig. 11-1) The Baler is provided with a Slow-moving Vehicle (SMV) Emblem Mounting Bracket on the left side of the Rear Door Upper Dust Panel. Red Reflector Strips are also provided on each rear corner of the Baler.

NOTE: Purchase the SMV Emblem locally. Also, because of variations in safety laws for different states and localities, it may be necessary to display the SMV Emblem in a different location. Your GEHL Dealer can assist you in relocating the Mounting Bracket, as necessary.

- Chain is of sufficient strength to hold the decoupled implement (and its load) and tow it to the shoulder.

SAFETY CHAIN & AUXILIARY LIGHTING (Fig. 11-2) As required or when desired, the Baler can be equipped with a safety chain for operation on public highways.

The safety chain should be attached to the tractor and Baler as shown. When attached in this manner, the safety chain should have the following characteristics:

ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing arm equipment on public highways. ONLY a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machine, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations.

Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow­ moving Vehicle Emblem .

PI CKU P NOTE:

Anytime the Baler is to be transported, BE SURE to raise the Pickup to its maximum height (transport position) using the Pickup Crank mechanism. Refer to the Adjustments chapter in this manual for proper Pickup raising procedure.

CHAPTER 12 STORAGE The following items are recommended for off-season storage of the Baler: 1.

Remove all crop material and debris from behind the Sprockets, Sheaves, ends of the Rollers, Pick­ up, ... etc.

2.

Wash entire machine and repaint any areas, where the paint has been worn-off, to help prevent rusting.

3.

Grease all Fittings and make sure the Telescoping PTO Drive is completely greased. Also, apply a light coat of grease to the Twine Knife and PTO Shaft Coupler Splines.

4.

Hydraulic Cylinders should be fully retracted and exposed Cylinder Rods should be coated with grease.

5.

Repack the Wheel Bearings.

6.

Clean and then apply motor oil or aerosol spray lubricant to all Roller Chains. Also, apply a little lubricant to the Telescoping Drive Shields and Guard Door Hinges.

7.

If possible, store the unit inside a shed where it

is not exposed to weather nor livestock.

8.

Reorder and replace any required parts so that the Baler will be ready to operate at the start of the next baling season.

Before starting-up next season, go over the Checklists in Chapter 3 at the front of this manual.

BALE APPEARANCE PROBLEM

AUTO-ELECTRIC TWINE WRAPPING SYSTEM Circuit Breaker trips-out repeatedly.

Short circuit in wiring.

Check for faulty Pressure Switch or a short circuit in the wiring for this Switch and replace faulty Switch or repair the wiring, as necessary.

Bent or damaged Linkages.

Check the Twine Tubes and Linkages for bent or damaged parts which may be overloading the Actuator.

Automatic "start" feature does NOT work.

Faulty Pressure Switch or wiring.

Using a jumper wire, connect the ORANGE Wire to ground; if the System "starts", the Switch is faulty.

Automatic "start" feature activating prematurely.

Pressure Switch Wiring damaged or shorting.

Repair Pressure Switch Wiring.

Auto-Electric Twine Tie System functions erratically.

Poor ground connection(s).

Check wiring to battery and tractor grounding for power circuit.

Corroded connections.

Clean all Terminals and Connectors.

Brown wire shorted out.

Make sure that the Brown wire is NOT pinched and/or that the Brown wire is connected to the Normally Open Terminal on the Twine Delay Switch.

No response from Center Twine Wrap Knob.

CHAPTER 14 SET-UP & ASSEMBLY SHIPPING HARDWARE (Figs. 14-1, 14-2 & 14-3) NOTE:

The RB 131 0 Baler is shipped from the fac­ tory with the Rear Door bolted closed. BE SURE to remove the (2) Shipping Bolts (one on each side of the Baler, as shown), BEFORE attempting to open the Rear Door for the first time. Also, some units may be shipped with retainers at the bottom of the two Large Hinged Doors on the left side of the Baler. These retainers are used to keep the Doors closed during shipment and, if desired, can be removed and dis­ carded; BE SURE to reinstall the Cap Screws after removing the retainers.

WHEELS & TIRES For transportation purposes, the RB 1310 Baler may have been shipped from the factory without t~ Wheels and Tires mounted. If so, install the Wheels and Tires and tighten the Lug Nuts to 90 ft-Ib (124 Nm). Inflate the Tires to the pressure as listed in the Tire Pressures chart in the Service chapter.

Manual-Electric-controlled Tie System Power Cable Routing Make the Power Cable connection to the Plug on the Electric Actuator and route the tractor end connection along the Hydraulic Lines on the right side of the Drawbar, over the top of the Hitch Clevis and up toward the back end of the tractor. Install two (2) Nylon Tie Straps to secure the Power Cable to one of the Hydraulic Lines.

Tractor Control Box Installation A Bracket is provided for attaching the Receptacle onto the tractor. The Bracket should be located on the rear of the tractor in a position which prevents the Cable from being caught by the PTO.

Appropriate hardware and mounting brackets are provided for attaching the Control Box to a non-sup­ portive member (such as the cab or a fender) on the tractor. BE SURE to locate the Control Box within convenient reach. Make the Red (+) 12-volt and White (-) 12-volt tractor battery/ground connections for powering the Control Box.

Auto-Electric-controlled Tie System Control Box (Fig. 14.4) If NOT already preassembled, install and secure (3) Magnets (067040) to the bottom ofthe Mount­ ing Bracket (088345) using (6 each) #10-24 x 1/2 Round Head Machine Screws, Lock Washers and Nuts.

Secure the Control Box (088340) to the Mounting Bracket (088345) using the (2) M8-1.25 Nuts provided.

Set Control Box and Bracket Assembly aside.

Harness to the Green Wire from the Delay Switch and anchor them to a hole in the Twine Mounting Plate with a #8-32 x 1/2 Round Head Machine Screw, Internal-Tooth Lock Washer and #8-32 Nut, making sure a good ground is made with the Plate.

2.

If Baler Harness is NOT already so equipped, cut the Ring Terminal Connector off the Brown Wire.

Then, install the Spade Terminal on the Harness Brown Wire. Then, connect the Brown Wire of the Harness to the Brown Wire from the Delay Switch.

NOTE:

The lengths of the Orange and Blue Wires are designed to match the requirements of several different models of Balers. Do NOT cutoff and attempt to splice together either wire. Form a loop with the excess Wire and anchor it around existing mounting brackets, when applicable. Connect the Orange Wire to the White Wire from the Pressure Switch. The Blue Wire is NOT used in this installation and should be capped to prevent shorting to ground. The Black (Ground) Wire from the Pressure Switch should be connected to the Baler Frame.

On the Baler end of Harness, connect the Harness Plug (Red and Yellow Wires) to the Plug from the Electric Actuator. Connect the Green Wire of the

CHAPTER 15 OPTIONAL FEATURES & ACCESSORIES GENERAL INFORMATION The following Optional Features & Accessories are available for installation on a Baler to increase is capabilities. Set-up and assembly information for all Kits, except the Twine Tie Mechanisms, are provided in separate instructions packaged with each Kit of parts.

AUTO-ELECTRIC TIE SYSTEM The Auto-Electric Wrap System (805434) includes a tractor-mounted Control Unit, remotely mounted Sen­ sors, Power and interconnecting Cables, mounting Brackets and attaching hardware. Details for adapta­ tion and operation of the system are included in a appropriate section of this manual. The Auto-Electric Wrap System is designed to enable automatic and uniform wrapping of the bale with twine.

AUTOMATIC CHAIN OILER (Fig. 15-1) The Automatic Chain Oiler (804595) provides a squirt of lubrication to all of the Drive Chains (except for the Pickup Drive Chain, as noted below) every time the Rear Door opens to discharge a bale. In this way, the Chains are oiled in direct proportion to the number of bales produced. Installation details are included with the Chain Oiler Kit.

NOTE:

The Pickup Drive Chain does NOT get oiled by the Automatic Chain Oiler and MUST be manually oiled every 8 hours (or daily). Refer to the Drive Chains topic in the Lubrication chapter of this manual.

BALE DISCHARGE BUMPER (Fig. 15-2) The Bale Bumper (803637) is designed to roll the discharged bale back away from the Baler about 10 feet (3 meters) on level ground. This usually provides enough clearance to close the Rear Door without having to move the tractor forward. Installation in­ structions and mounting hardware are provided with the Bale Bumper.

CROWDER WHEELS KIT (Fig. 15-3) The Crowder Wheels Kit (805422) is available for expanding the Pickup width of the Baler to enable taking in a wider swath of material. The Kit contains (2) Crowder Wheels, Mounts and attaching hardware.

Installation, operation and adjustments details are provided with the Kit of parts.

MANUAL-ELECTRIC TWINE TIE KIT The Manual-Electric Twine Tie Kit (805028) is avail­ able for manual control of the Twine Tie mechanism.

It contains a Control Box, Wiring and mounting hardware. Installation details are provided in the Set­ up & ASsembly chapter.

SAFETY CHAIN (Fig. 15-5) NOTE: If the Baler is going to be transported on a public highway, a Safety Chain Kit should be obtained and installed following the details in the "Controls & Safety Equipment" and "Transporting" Chapters.

NOTE: The optional Crowder Wheels Kit cannot be installed at the same time as the optional Gauge Wheel Kit because of interference with the right side Crowder Wheel mounting brackets.

The recommended Safety Chain for use with this Baler can be obtained in Kit 803320.

GAUGE WHEEL (Fig. 15-4) The Gauge Wheel (803636) allows the Baler Pickup to better follow the contour of the ground and, thereby, reduces the possibility of the Pickup Tines contacting the ground. Installation instructions are provided with the Gauge Wheel.

NOTE:

AFTER installing (or removing) the Gauge Wheel, BE SURE Pickup flotation is reset so that approximately 30 Ibs (14 kgs) of force is required to lift the Pickup at the Hay Hold-down Cross Pipe BEFORE operating the Baler or damage to the Pickup may result. Refer to the Pickup Flotation topic in the Adjust­ ments chapter of this manual.

Decal Locations infonnation is provided to assist in the proper selection and application ofnew decals, in the event the original decal(s) become(s) damaged or the machine is repainted. Refer to the listing for the illustration reference number, part number, description and quantity ofeach decal provided in the Kit.Refer to the appropriate illustration(s) for replacement location(s).

NOTE:

Refer to the SAFETY Chapter in the Operator's Manual for the specific information provided on all of the various Safety Decals furnished In the Decal Klt(s).

To ensure proper selection for correct replacement decal(s), compare all ofthe various closeup location photographs to your machine BEFORE starting to refinish the unit. Then, circle each pictured decal (applicable to your machine) while checking-off its part number in the listing. After you have verified all of the decal needed for replacement, set aside unneeded decals for disposal.

NEW DECAL APPLICATION Surfaces MUST be free from dirt, dust, grease and other foreign material before applying the new decal. To apply a solid­ formed decal, remove the smaller portion of the decal backing paper and apply this part of the exposed adhesive backing to the clean surface while maintaining proper position and align­ ment. Slowly peel off the other portion of the backing paper while applying hand pressure to smooth-out the decal surface.

A CAUTION ALWAYS read and abide by the Safety Rules and Information shown on Decals. If Decal(s) become(s) damaged, unreadable or If the unit Is repainted, the Decal(s) MUST be replaced.
