G E H L..: COMPANY New Agricultural Equipment G E H L..: Company (Inc.), hereinafter referred to as G E H L..:, warrants new G E H L..: machinery and attach­ ments (the "Equipment") to be free from defects in material and workmanship atthe time of delivery to the original purchaser if properly set up and operated in accordance with the recommendations set forth in G E H L..:'S Operator's Manual.

G E H L..: 's liability for any defect shall be limited to repair or replacement of the Equipment. G E H L..: 's obligation shall terminate twelve (12) months after the delivery of the goods to the original retail purchaser or when the Equipment is first put into use, whichever event occurs first.

This warranty shall not apply to tires which are subject to the warranty of the tire manufacturer. Please contact your G E H L..: dealer for further information on tire warranties.

This warranty shall not apply to any item of Equipment which shall have been repaired or altered outside the G E H L..: factory or authorized G E H L..: dealership or which has been subject to misuse, negligence or accident; neither shall it apply to Equipment which has not been operated in accordance with G E H L..:'S printed instructions or has been operated beyond the Company's recommended machine rated capacity.

EXCLUSION OF WARRANTIES Except as otherwise expressly stated herein, G E H L..: makes no representation or warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability or fitness for particular purpose in respect to the Equipment.

G E H L..: shall not be liable for incidental or consequential damages for any breach of warranty, including but not limited to inconvenience, rental or replacement equipment, loss of profits or other commercial loss.

No agent, employee or representative of G E H L..: has any authority to bind G E H L..: to any affirmation, representation or warranty concerning its machinery and attachments except as specifically set forth herein.

Certain limitations expressed herein are excludable in accordance with provisions of local law. Such provisions shall be deemed struck if such local law is applicable. All other provisions shall continue to apply.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Your decision to purchase this piece of GEHL· equip­ ment was a good one. We are sure that your decision was strongly considered and that you are looking for­ ward to many seasons of reliable performance from this machine.

We, as a Company, have invested a great deal of time and effort in developing our lines of agricultural and industrial equipment.

This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information, con­ tained within, was prepared for your assistance in preparing, adjusting, maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine.

Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual.

Use the Index, in the back of the manual, for specific chapter and topic/page number references.

This GEHL equipment is provided with its Operator's Manual attached to it. After using it, please keep this Manual with the unit at all times! Furthermore, we recommend if this machine is re-sold that this Manual accompany the unit.

CHAPTER 3 CHECKLISTS PRE-DEUVERY Mter the Forage Blower has been completely set-up, the following inspections should be made before delivenng it to the Customer. Check off each item after prescribed ac­ tion is taken.

Check that: NO parts of the unit have been damaged in shipment.

Check for such things as dents and loose or missing parts; correct or replace components as required.

All bolts and fasteners are in place and tightly secured.

D As applicable, the Hydraulic Pump, Motor,

Cylinders, Hoses and Fittings are NOT damaged, leaking or loosely connected.

D The Planetary Gearboxes and Chaincase are filled to proper oil level; see Lubrication chapter of this

manual.

All Grease Fittings have been properly lubricated, Chains oiled, and as applicable, the Self-contained Hydraulic Oil Reservoir is filled to the proper level; see Lubrication chapter of this manual.

The Wheels are properly mounted and securely attached and Tires are properly mounted and inflated to the appropriate pressure listed in the Service chapter.

All Guards, Shields and Decals are in place and securely attached.

DEUVERY The following Checklist is an important reminder of valu­ able information that MUST be passed on to the Customer at the time the unit is delivered. Check off each item as you explain it to the Customer.

BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOL· LOWING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDI· TION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQ UIPMENT, WHETHER F AMIL Y MEMBER OR EMPLOYEE, IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Our Company ALWAYS takes the operator and his/her safety into consideration when designing its machinery and guards exposed moving parts for his/her protec­ tion. MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE BEFORE unclogging, cleaning, adjusting, lubricat­ ing or servicing the unit: 1.

Disengage the tractor PTO.

2.

Shut off the tractor engine, place the tractor in transmission in park and/or lock brake pedals to prevent any tractor movement.

3.

Remove the Ignition Key and take it with you when leaving the tractor seat.

4.

Wait for all movement to stop

Remove the Telescoping Drive and All Power Connections from the tractor

SPECIAL SILO CAUTION With Operator's Safety in mind, the GEHL Company cautions anyone, who plans to enter a silo, that fer­ menting silage can (and may at the time) be giving-off dangerous toxic gases. Thus, the GEHL Company recommends that: BEFORE you enter the silo, that you run the Forage Blower empty for a few minutes to help ventilate and force fresh air into the silo. Good safety practices dictate also that you NEVER enter the silo alone. BE

SAFETY (Continued) SURE someone else is around to help you out in an emergency. Keep ALL doors, windows or openings free of obstruction to promote fresh air circulation, while inside the silo.

ACAUTION THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE NO LOAD FAN SPEED FOR THIS UNIT IS 780 RPM. THE RESULTING MAXIMUM NO LOAD PTO INPUT SPEEDS WITH THE TRANSMISSION INSTALLED FOR 540 AND 1000 RPM PTO IS AS FOLLOWS.

ROTATING DRIVE LINE DEATH CAN RESULT FROM ENTANGLEMENT KEEP PEOPLE AN D CLOTHING WELL CLEAR DO NOT OPERATE WITHOUT: • DRIVE LINE GUARDS • INPUT SHAFT GUARDS • TRACTOR MASTER SHIELD • U-JOINTS LOCKED TO TRACTOR AND IMPLEMENT SHAFTS FOR YOUR PROTECTION, THIS DRIVE TUBE HAS A GUARD THAT WILL STOP ROTATING WITH CONTACT. BE SURE THIS GUARO CAN TURN FREELY. DO NOT TIE DOWN OR PREVENT ITS ROTATION . DO NOT POUND BELL TO REMOVE DRIVE TUBE. U-JOINT YOKES MUST BE PROPERLY ATTACHED AND MAINTAINED.

CHAPTER 5 CONTROLS & SAFETY EQUIPMENT The FB1540, FB1560 and the FB1580 Blowers are provided with several similar features for operator safety and convenience.

A CAUTION Become familiar with and know how to use ALL Safety Devices and Controls on the Forage Blower BEFORE attempting to operate this equipment. Know how to STOP Forage Blower operation BEFORE starting It.

CUTOFF KNIFE (Fig. 5-1) The adjustable position Cutoff Knife is located inside the Blower Outlet and provided to help eliminate crop hairpinning, increase Blower capacity, reduce heat build-up from crop carry-over and reduce horsepower consumption. BE SURE to keep the Knife properly adjusted close to the Fan Paddles and keep it tightly secured.

A WARNING NEVER place your hand Into the top of the Blower Outlet opening.

DRAWBAR HITCH (Fig. 5-2)

A WARNING Do NOT attempt to operate this machine un­ less It Is properly hitched to the tractor.

The Forage Blower MUST always be properly hitched to the tractor draw bar whenever the PTO Connection is attached and the Blower is being operated. A draw­ bar pin with a lockpin or locknut should also be used to prevent detachment.

GUARDS & SHIELDS

A CAUTION Read and observe ALL Safety Decals on the unit BEFORE attempting to operate it for the first time. Do NOT attempt to operate this equipment unless ALL factory Installed Guards and Shields are properly secured In place.

Whenever and wherever possible and without affecting machine operation, Guards, Shields and/or Hinged Covers have been used on this equipment to protect potentially hazardous areas. In many places, Decals are also provided to warn of potential dangers as well as to display special operating procedures.

Hopper Baffle (Fig. 5-2)

A CAUTION NEVER attempt to operate the Forage Blower unless it is equipped with the Hopper Baffle or the optional Small Grain Shield.

The Hopper Baffle is a pivoting plate (Baffle) which is secured to the Hopper Hood and suspended over the Spinner Rotors in such a manner so as to help prevent forage or other foreign objects from being kicked-back out of the Spinners area. When

mounted, the Baffle also helps to promote smooth material flow into the Hopper.

The Telescoping PTO Drive Connection, between the Forage Blower and tractor PTO shaft is equipped with a rotating Shield. This Shield MUST be kept in good condition, properly lubricated and be free to rotate at all times.

Miscellaneous Guards (Fig. 5-4 & See Fig. 5-2) Various latched and hinged Guards and Covers are provided on the Forage Blower to enable access for service or adjustment. The various areas of shielding are: the Spinners, the Spinner Tunnels, the Main Drive Shaft, the Drive Belt and the right Tire (FB 1580).

Small Grain Shield (Fig. 5-3)

A CAUTION NEVER attempt to operate the Forage Blower unless It Is equipped with the optional Small Grain Shield or the standard Hopper Baffle.

For using the Forage Blower for small grains, a Small Grain Shield is available for installation in place of or in conjunction with the standard Hopper Hood. When the Small Grain Shield is NOT installed, the Hopper Baffle MUST be in place before attempting to operate the unit.

Telescoping PTO Rotating Shields (See Fig. 5-2)

PTO LOCKING COUPLER(S) (Figs. 5-5 & 5-6)

A WARNING

A Spring-loaded Locking Device is provided on the tractor connection end of all Telescoping Drive PTO Connections to positively secure the Connection onto the tractor PTO Shaft. In addition, a Spring-loaded Locking Device is also provided on the Main Drive Shaft connection end of the Telescoping Drive PTO Connection.

BEFORE proceeding to operate the Forage Blower, BE SURE that the Rotating Shields turn freely. If Shields become damaged, they MUST be replaced Immediately.

A WARNING BEFORE starting the tractor, BE SURE that the Spring-loaded Locking Devlce(s) Is(are) properly seated Into the groove of the ap­ propriate shaft. Also BE SURE that the tractor PTO Shield Is In place and properly secured and that the Telescoping Shields rotate freely BEFORE starting the tractor.

SWING-AWAY BLOWER OUTLET (See Figs. 5-1, 5-4 & 5-5) To facilitate access to the Blower Fan for inspection and clean-out, when required, the Forage Blower is provided with a Swing-away Outlet. The over-center Latch Mechanism MUST be properly locked with the Outlet tightly closed, before operating the unit.

A DANGER NEVER attempt to unlatch or open the Blower Outlet while the machine Is running. Exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PRO­ CEDURE (page 8) BEFORE opening the Out­ let.

WATER INJECTION SYSTEM (Fig. 5-5)

A Water Injection System is provided as standard equipment on the FB 1580 model Forage Blower and available for field installation on FB 1540 and FB 1560 model Forage Blowers. The System is used to help combat gumming, of particular types of forage, in the Blower Fan and Spinner Hopper areas. Water, for the Injection System, is obtained from a garden hose which can be directly connected to the Fitting located in the area just above the Front Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff Handle. The garden hose type Fitting also has a built-in Shutoff Lever.

SPINNER DRIVE EMERGENCY SHUTOFF (See Figs. 5-4 & 5-5) The Spinner Drive is provided with a Clutch-type con­ trol mechanism which enables stopping the Blower infeed by disengaging Spinner operation. Clutch Con­ trol Handles are located on both sides of the unit to enable Emergency Shutdown from either side of the unit.

NOTE: Normally, Forage Blower operation is started and stopped using the tractor PTO. If the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff is disengaged, BE SURE to re-engage the Clutch slowly to avoid damage to the Spinner Drive components.

NOTE:

The Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff halts ONL Y the Spinner Drive. The Blower Fan will continue to operate.

NOTE:

To ensure proper operation of the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff, disengage handle at least once daily.

CHAPTER 6 OPERATION

A CAUTION BEFORE starting the tractor engine and run­ ning the Forage Blower for the first time, review and comply with ALL SAFETY recom­ mendations set forth In the SAFETY chapter of this manual.

EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN (Fig. 6-1) In an emergency or in case a foreign object enters the Spinner Hopper area, STOP material infeed to the Blower IMMEDIA TEL Y disengaging the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff Clutch using the Clutch Con­ trol Handle on either side of the unit. Then, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCE­ DURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to remedy the problem.

To avoid unnecessary strain on the Forage Blower Drive Line components, ALWAYS engage the tractor PTO at idle. Then, steadily increase it to the recom­ mended speed. For the 1540 model Blower, the tractor PTO speed should be maintained between 540 and 570 RPM. For 540 RPM operation of the 1580 model Blower, the tractor PTO speed should be maintained between 470 and 570 RPM. For 1000 RPM operation of 1560 & 1580 model Blowers, the tractor PTO speed should be maintained between 900 and 1070 RPM.

A CAUTION Do NOT exceed the maximum recommended operating speed for your particular model unit. Failure to follow these recommended speeds may cause bodily Injury or result In damage to the machine.

BLOWER PIPES & OUTLET (Figs. 6-2, 6-3

The proper-sized Blower Pipes and Coupler Pipes MUST be used to attain the maximum capacity and to help prevent plugging. The inside diameter of the Blower Outlet is 8-3/4 (222 mm). To obtain a smooth flow of material through the entire length of the Blower Pipes, use only smooth 9" (229 mm) inside

diameter Pipes and tightly bolt Pipe sections together to prevent air leaks. The Blower Outlet has a built-in Alignment Flange to facilitate Blower Pipe alignment.

A Telescoping Pipe should be used to adapt the Blower Pipes to the Blower Outlet. A Quick-clamp can be used to connect the Telescoping Pipe to the Outlet. Refer to the Optional Features & Accessories chapter for order­ ing numbers.

The Forage Blower is provided with an adjustable Left Axle which enables small angle adjustments for the Blower Outlet to obtain a correct straight-line align­ ment with the Blower Pipes. Major (large) angle ad­ justments are accommodated by rotating the Rim Sheet to redirect the Blower Outlet, up to 30' from the verti­ cal, for connection to Blower Pipes which MUST be routed at an angle. NEVER attempt to place an Elbow Pipe Fitting in close proximity to the Blower Outlet as this will create a definite restriction and reduce Forage Blower capacity as well as promote unwanted plug­ ging.

WATER INJECTION SYSTEM (Fig. 6-5 & See Fig. 6-3) NOTE: The FB1580 Forage Blower is equipped with a Water Injection System as standard equipment and the FB1540 and FB1560 units can be equipped with a similar field installed System.

When the material conditions cause excessive gum­ ming in the Spinners, the Blower Fan and the Blower Pipes, a garden hose can be directly attached to the Water Inlet Fitting on the front of the 1580 unit. The water is routed to the Spinners and the Blower Fan area and it is controlled by the Valve built into the Inlet Fitting. BE SURE to use only as much water as needed to overcome the gumming and reduce the heat buildup on the Rim Sheet.

NOTE:

BE SURE to shut the water off when there is NO crop going through the unit. Through the course of normal operation, the Injection Nozzles may require cleaning or unplugging. Refer to appropriate details in the Service chapter for Nozzle maintenance.

AIR INLETS (See Figs. 6-2 & 6-4)

1 • Alignment Flange

To accommodate special crops and conditions, the Forage Blower is designed with Air Inlets on both sides of the Blower Fan. Both Inlets are adjustable and should be normally set to a full open position or gap of 5/8" (16 mm) for most crops. The correct adjusted setting is one which promotes smooth crop flow through the Spinner Tunnels and Blower Pipes. If the Blower Pipes tend to plug frequently, increase the Inlet gap and resultant air intake. If the Spinner Tunnels tend to plug frequently, decrease the Inlet gap and resultant air intake. To blow small grains, completely close the Air Inlets. Always adjust both Inlets equally.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION - SHEAR BOLTS (Fig. 6-6) The Forage Blower Telescoping Drive PTO Connec­ tion is furnished with a built-in Shear Flange on its tractor connection end. Access holes are provided in the Rotating PTO Shield for Shear Bolt replacement.

The normal duty 540 RPM 1540 Telescoping Drive uses (2) Special Finished 5/16 x 2 Grade 5 Shear Bolts.

The heavy duty 540 RPM 1540 Telescoping Drive uses (2) Special Finished 5/16 x 1-3/4 Grade 8 Shear Bolts.

The 1560 1000 RPM, 1580 540 RPM, and the 1580 1000 RPM units use (2) Special Finished 5/16 x 1-1/2 Grade 5 Shear Bolts. Eight additional Shear Bolts are

provided with each unit and are stored on the Front Shield Shear Bolt Holders.

NOTE: Refer to the Optional Features & Acces­ sories chapter for replacement Shear Bolt order num­ bers.

Tunnels and the Spinner Hopper. After exercising the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8), determine the location of the plugging, the reason for the plugging and replace the Shear Bolts if they have failed.

A CAUTION BEFORE replacing a Shear Bolt, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCE­ DURE (page 8).

NOTE: Remove the cause of Shear Bolt failure BEFORE replacing the Bolt. The Shear Flange should be greased BEFORE resuming operation.

the Quick Clamp and separate the Telescoping Pipe from the Blower Outlet and allow the plugging material to fall out or be removed from the Blower .

UNPLUGGING

A WARNING If any part of the Forage Blower becomes plugged, STOP feeding In material IMMEDI­ ATELY by disengaging the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff. Exercise the MAN­ DATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding.

The Forage Blower can become plugged from a variety of causes. Specific details are covered in the causes and remedies portions of the Troubleshooting chapter.

Recognized areas of potential plugging are: the Blower Pipes, the Blower Outlet, the Blower Fan, the Spinner

In order to remove the Blower Pipes, the Telescoping Pipe will have to be raised enough to clear the Alignment Flange on top of the Blower Outlet.

A WARNING BE SURE that the welg ht of the vertical length of Blower Pipes Is NOT resting on the Blower Outlet. Properly attach and support the Pipes BEFORE proceeding to raise and remove the Pipes to uncouple them from the Blower Out­ let.

Blower Outlet & Fan (Fig. 6-7) If, when the Blower Pipes are removed, the plugging

material is in the Blower Outlet and also plugging the Blower Fan, the Swing-away Blower Outlet can be unlocked and opened to clean out the material in the areas of the Blower Outlet and Blower Fan Paddles.

A WARNING NEVER attempt to unplug or operate this unit under power with the Blower Outlet unlocked or open. Injury or entanglement, as well as Rim Sheet wedging, could result from the ex­ posed moving Blower Fan or from flying par­ ticles. When unplugging the Outlet, avoid contact with the Cutoff Knife.

A WARNING NEVER attempt to clean a plugged area with your hands. Use a piece of wood or hook or similar tool. When the major amount of plug­ ging material Is removed, completely close the unit, remove the Blower Pipe, and run the Blower a short time to remove any remaining material. Reconnect and resume normal operations.

NOTE: The entire Blower Fan Housing area should be cleaned out to avoid Rim Sheet damage.

Spinner Tunnels & Spinners (See Figs.

6-1 & 6-6) If the Blower Fan area was plugged, the Spinner Tun­

nels will also have to be cleaned out before attempting to resume operation. Unlatch and remove the Tunnel Covers, on both sides of the unit, for access to cleaning out the Tunnels and the base of the Blower Fan Hous­ ing. If the Spinner Tunnels are plugged, it may also be necessary to remove the plugging from inside the Spin­ ner Hoppers.

A CAUTION NEVER attempt to use your hands to feed material Into the Forage Blower.

NOTE:

If the Spinner Drive Emergency Shut-off was used to stop material infeed, BE SURE to re­ engage the Clutch Control Handle slowly to avoid damage to the Drive Line components. If the Shear Bolts were sheared, BE SURE to use the correct Bolts when they are replaced and grease the Shear Flange before attempting to resume operation.

CHAPTER 7 ADJUSTMENTS NOTE:

A CAUTION

Because of the lower Blower Fan speed of the 1540 model Blower as compared to the higher Fan speeds of the other models, the Air Inlet Cover adjust­ ments will be more critical on 1540 model machines.

BEFORE proceeding to perform any adjust­ ments on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

BLOWER FAN PADDLES (Figs. 7-1, 7-2 & 7-3)

AIR INLETS (Fig. 7-1) Adjustable Air Inlets are provided on both sides of the Blower Fan for use in controlling air intake to help reduce plugging in the Blower Outlet and Spinner areas. If plugging tends to occur in the Blower Outlet and Pipes, increase the air intake. If plugging tends to occur in the Spinners area, decrease the air intake.

A WARNING To safely adjust the Paddles, remove the Telescoping PTO Drive connection from the Blower Main Drive Shaft (1540/1560) or from the Transmission Shaft (1580).

NOTE:

For blowing small grains, the Air Inlets should be completely closed.

For all crops, except small grains and, for normal conditions where the Forage Blower is being operated at the recommended speed, a good initial setting for both Inlet Covers is completely open (5/8" or 16mm away from the Side Sheets). Then, if Tunnel plugging occurs, reduce the air intake by reducing the Cover gaps, as needed, until the material flows smoothly in and through the Tunnels.

The Blower Fan Paddles are factory adjusted to ap­ proximately 1/32" (lmm) away from the Rim Sheet.

This setting should be checked and readjusted (if necessary) each season or at least after every 200 hours of operation. To check the Paddle positions, first remove both Spinner Tunnel Covers for access. Then, rotate each Paddle to a point 3" (6 mm) past the bottom

splice on the Outlet side of the Rimsheet and check the Paddle's clearance to the Rimsheet through the Tunnel opening. An excellent method for checking the setting is to place a nickel and a dime side by side on the Rim Sheet. When the Paddle is rotated across the coins, it should pickup the nickel and leave the dime. To adjust the Paddles, use the following steps in order as listed.

NOTE:

NEVER loosen more than one Paddle at a time. ALWAYS loosen, adjust and retighten one Pad­ dle BEFORE proceeding to the next to avoid misad­ justment and resultant vibration when the unit is test run.

NOTE: BEFORE proceeding with Paddle adjust­ ment, BE SURE the Rim Sheet Beads are clean and free of packed-in material. Make sure also that the Side Sheets are properly seated in the Rim Sheet Beads and the Rim Sheet tension is properly adjusted.

After all Paddles have been adjusted, replace all of the components removed for access and recon­ nect the unit to the tractor to test run it while listening for sounds of Paddle misadjustment.

Slowly run the machine and gradually bring it up to the recommended RPM. If misadjustment is evident, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8), separate the PTO Drive and isolate and correct the prob­ lem Paddle(s).

BLOWER OUTLET ANGLE (Fig. 7-4) The Forage Blower features an Adjustable Left Axle to accommodate slight angle (up to 4-1/2') misalignment between the Blower Outlet and Blower Pipes. For larger angle adjustments or to redirect the Blower Out­ let for mow-filling applications, the Rim Sheet can be loosened and repositioned to change the Blower Outlet from its factory provided straight-vertical position.

When delivered, the distance between the Frame Sad­ dle and the four Clip mounting bolts on the Rim Sheet is 5" (127mm). Re-establish this distance to restore the Blower Outlet straight-vertical positioning.

NOTE: If the Rim Sheet and Blower Outlet are repositioned, check and readjust the Cutoff Knife posi­ tion per appropriate details in this chapter.

Remove the Spinner Tunnel Covers, the Air Inlet Covers, the Adjustment Hole Covers and the Rear Drive Belt Guard for access to the Paddle mount­ ing hardware.

NOTE:

The Front Fan Paddles are fastened with three (3) or four (4) Bolts per Paddle. For access to the centermost Nut, the Rear Belt Guard MUST be removed to uncover the access hole.

Loosen, but do NOT remove the mounting hardware on the first Paddle and reposition the Paddle (in or out) until the correct clearance to the Rim Sheet is obtained.

Repeat step 2 for all Paddles on each side of the Blower Fan.

All individual Fan Paddles are correctly adjusted; see Fan Paddles topic.

Cutoff Knife is in good condition and NOT badly worn or damaged. If it is, order a new Knife by GEHL part number 076369.

Proceed to adjust the Knife as follows: 4.

Move the Knife down so that it just contacts a front and rear Paddle and then, snug the 3/8 Nuts.

Open the Outlet and scribe a clearly visible line 1/32" (1 mm) below the line where the Knife goes behind the edge of the Blower Outlet. If desired, spray-paint the Knife before scribing the line.

With the 3/8 Nuts snug, tap the Cutoff Knife up so that the scribe line is along the edge of the Outlet and then, tightly secure the 3/8 Nuts.

Recheck the clearance between the Cutoff Knife and front and rear Paddles. It should be between

0.030 and 0.045" (0.75 and 1.1 mm). If it is NOT, repeat the adjustment.

After the Knife is properly adjusted, reconnect the Telescoping Drive and test run the unit at idle RPM and gradually increase RPM while listening for any sound of the Paddles striking the Cutoff Knife.

DRAWBAR (Fig. 7-6) After the desired Forage Blower parking position is established, use the Drawbar Turnbuckle to level the unit (front to back). The Turnbuckle can also be used to mechanically lift the unit to a level position from a position with the end of the Drawbar in contact with the ground. Once the proper level position is adjusted, lower the Support Stands.

HOPPER BAFFLE (Fig. 7-7 & See Fig. 7-1) An adjustable Stop is provided on the back of the Hopper Baffle to limit rearward movement and im­ prove feeding when blowing certain crops such as corn silage. A Decal is provided on the top corner of the

Baffle to display Baffle Stop activation. To engage the Stop, reach behind the Baffle and lift up on the Stop and rotate it rearward to allow it to move to the horizontal position.

NOTE:

BE SURE that the Limiting Chain is hooked back onto the Baffle Stop assembly whenever the Baffle is removed and replaced when an optional Small Grain Shield is installed. The Chain MUST be reattached at the correct length which allows the Hop­ per Baffle to swing-out to a point which is just beyond the centers of the Spinner Discs.

RIM SHEET TENSION (See Fig. 7-5) The same large U-bolt, on which the Blower Outlet and Top Latch are mounted, is also used to secure the Blower Rim Sheet. Any time the Rim Sheet is rotated to relocate the Blower Outlet or the Outlet and related fasteners are removed to replace the Rim Sheet Liner. the 1/2 Nuts should be retightened to 40 ft-Ib (54 Nm) to place proper tension on the Rim Sheet.

NOTE: Tap Rim Sheet beads with a piece of wood or leather-covered mallet until the torque value stabi­ lizes.

Drive Belts and a Drive Chain are used to couple the Spinner Transmission Input Shaft to the Blower Fan. All components, related to the Drive and Emergency Shutoff Clutch, should be inspected for excessive wear and serviced or readjusted, as required, several times each season of operation or at least after every 50 hours.

started and stopped using the tractor PTO. If the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff is disengaged, BE SURE to re-engage the Clutch mechanism slowly to avoid damage to the Spinner Drive components.

After the desired Forage Blower parking position is established and the Drawbar Turnbuckle is adjusted to level the unit, the Leveling and Support Stands should be lowered and locked in position for additional stabilization. Both Stands should be adjusted and lock­ ed in the correct position to place an upward pressure on each corner of the Spinner Hopper. Tightly secure

The Forage Blower Drive Belt is a Power Band Belt.

The Belt is specifically designed to fulfill the require­ ments of this application. For a new Drive Belt, order and install only by GEHL part number 090552.

Belt Idler Spring tension should have a compressed length of 11 to 12-1/2" (280 to 317 mm). The Clutch Rod Bolt should be adjusted to have 1-3/16 to 1-5/16" (30 to 33 mm) of exposed length between the Shifter Bracket and the underside of the Rod Head. Both of the preceding dimensions should be established with the Clutch in the "engaged" position.

Shifter Bracket is moving just over center. Reposition the Nut to adjust this dimension, as required.

Belt Guides are also provided to help prevent the Belts from coming out of the Sheave grooves. The Upper Belt Guides should be adjusted to within 3/16" (5mm) of the Belts when the Clutch is fully engaged. The Lower Belt Guide should also be adjusted to within 3/16" (5 mm) of the Belts with the Clutch fully engaged. The Belt Guide Bolt should also be posi­ tioned so that the Belts are 1/2" (13mm) from the Bolt when the Clutch is engaged.

Drive Chain (Fig. 7-11)

A Spring-loaded Idler is provided to maintain proper operating tension on the Drive Chain. Proper Chain tension exists when the distance between the two spans of Chain measures between 1-3/8 and 2-1/8" (35 and 54mm). When Chain is fully tightened, the top of the hardened Washer on the Chain Idler will be about even with the bottom of the Spinner Chute. To adjust the Chain tension, loosen the Jackshaft Bearing Bracket attachment hardware and rotate the Take-up Bolt.

After adjustment is made, tightly secure the Bearing Bracket hardware.

A CAUTION ALWAYS test the function of the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff Clutch after any ad­ justments are made to Insure that It Is proper­ ly stopping operation of the Spinners.

SWING-AWAY BLOWER OUTLET (See Fig. 7-2, 7-6 & 7-8)

A CAUTION The Swing-away Blower Outlet MUST be properly adjusted to close tightly and correct­ ly Latch at all times. NEVER attempt to open Blower Outlet when the machine Is running.

The Swing-away Blower MUST be kept tightly closed and properly latched whenever the Forage Blower is operated. The Outlet assembly is mounted on a large U-Bolt which forms a pivot pin on one side and a Latch Handle pivot on the other side. Vertical alignment of the Outlet assembly is provided by repositioning the Collars above and below the top Hinge. Similarly, vertical alignment of the Over-center Latch is provided by repositioning Collars above and below the Latch Handle assembly. Lateral alignment is provided by slotted mounting holes in the Pivot Hinges, the Over­ center Latch Anchor Bracket and the Bottom Spring­ loaded Latch Pin assembly. The sequence of adjustment for the Outlet and Latches is as follows: 1.

With the Collars loose on the Top Hinge, the Hinge mounting hardware loosened (but NOT removed) and, the Top Latch in the "unlatched" position, check and if necessary readjust the Bot­ tom Spring-loaded Latch Pin so that it fully protrudes through the Latch Tab hole. BE SURE also that Latch Pin assembly Bracket is adjusted for a 1/16" clearance to the Latch Tab.

2.

With the Bottom Latch engaged, slide the Collars against both sides of the top Hinge and tighten the Set Screws.

3.

With the Outlet closed, push against the upper portion of the Blower Outlet and snug the Hinge mounting hardware to hold the Outlet tight against the Blower Rim Sheet.

4.

Open the Outlet and tap on the Top Hinge to force it down slightly to obtain a slightly tighter fit.

Then, tightly secure both Hinges.

5.

Close the Outlet and check that the Hinge side of the Outlet is tight against the Rim Sheet when both the Bottom and Top Latches are engaged.

6.

If necessary, relocate the Latch Handle to better align it with the Latch Anchor Bracket by repositioning the Collars above and below the Latch Handle.

7.

If the fit is tight on the Hinge side but NOT on

the Top Latch side, loosen the Top Latch Anchor Bracket mounting hardware slightly and tap the Bracket away slightly to increase the inward pressure when the Latch is engaged. Then, retighten the hardware.

NOTE: After the Blower Outlet has been reposi­ tioned or the Latches repositioned, BE SURE to check and (if necessary) readjust the Cutoff Knife.

Likewise, after the Fan Paddles have been readjusted, the Cutoff Knife should be checked and readjusted.

WATER NOZZLES (Fig. 7-12) On the FB1580 or on FB1540 and FB1560 units with the optional Water Injection System, the Injection Nozzles in the Spinner Hopper MUST be correctly oriented and installed so that they face away from each other so that the Water is sprayed in the same direction as the material flow. Slotted mounting holes are used to secure the Nozzles so they have to be loosened, raised out of the slots and rotated in order to correct the orientation.

CHAPTER 8 LUBRICATION GENERAL INFORMATION

A CAUTION NEVER attempt to lubricate this unit when any part of the machine Is In motion. ALWAYS BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to lubricate this equipment.

It is well to remember that a sufficient amount of oil

and grease will prevent excessive part wear and early failure.

SPINNER GEARBOXES Both Spinner Gearboxes each have a capacity of 2 lb (0.91 kg) of medium soft grease. Both should be check­ ed and the grease replenished (if necessary) at the end of each season of operation. When adding or replacing the grease, use a good grade of multipurpose Lithium base grease.

OILING Apply motor oil on the Spinner Drive Chain after every 10 hours of operation. Frequently oil the Telescoping PTO Drive Shield to promote freedom of rotation.

TRANSMISSION (FB1580 MODELS ONLY) The oil level in the FB 1580 model Transmission should be checked on a routine basis after every 50 hours and replenished (if necessary) with SAE #140 Gear Lube.

Check the level by removing the Plug on the side of the Housing; the oil level should be up to the open check hole. The Transmission capacity is 25 oz.(0.65 liter).

The Transmission should be inspected occasionally for oil drips or leaks around the Seals; if leakage is exces­ sive, Seals MUST be replaced. Contact Dealer for directives. Oil which is tan in color and foams exces­ sively indicates that there is water in the oil and re­ quires replacement.

Do NOT overfill the Transmission. Always wipe dirt buildup off the Vent; inspect and clean daily, as required.

GREASING NOTE:

Grease all fittings on a prescribed basis, at the intervals of operation listed, before and after stor­ ing the unit, and as otherwise indicated. Use a good grade of Lithium base grease.

Wipe dirt from the fittings before greasing to prevent the dirt from being forced into the Bearing or Pivot.

Replace any missing fittings, when noted. Force the grease into the fitting until it comes out at the Bearing Seal or at the Shaft. To minimize dirt buildup, avoid excessive greasing.

It should also be understood that all services covered in this chapter are Owner-Operator responsibilities. Where indicated, certain service routines should only be carried-out by an authorized GEHL Dealer or GEHL Company repre­ sentative.

A WARNING To safely remove or adjust a Fan Paddle, ex­ ercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (Page 8) and remove the Teles­ coping Drive connection from the Blower Shaft.

Through the course of several years of operation, the Paddles will have been moved to their physical limits of adjustment and thus will require removal and re­ placement. For access to the Paddle hardware, remove the Spinner Tunnel Covers, the Air Inlet Covers, the Adjustment Hole Covers and the Rear Drive Belt Guard. The front Fan Paddles are fastened with three (3) or four (4) Bolts per paddle and the rear Paddles are fastened with three (3) Bolts. For access to the center­ most Nut of the front Paddles, the Rear Belt Guard MUST be removed to uncover the access hole.

BLOWER FAN PADDLE REPLACEMENT (Fig. 9-1 & 9-2) NOTE:

At the factory, the Fan Paddles are as­ sembled to the Fan Disc in a fixture to facilitate attach­ ment and alignment. In the field, if more than one Fan Paddle is removed at a time, the Fan Disc will tend to

Refer to the Fan Paddles topic in the Adjustment chap­ ter for procedures to follow to adjust each Paddle position. BE SURE to retighten the Paddle hardware to 150 ft-Ib (203 Nm).

3.

Remove and retain the Large U-bolt, 1/2 Nuts and Washers.

4.

Place a short piece of2 x 4 between the Rim Sheet and Sidesheets to hold the Rim Sheet away and allow better access to the hardware on the inside of the Rim Sheet.

5.

Separate the two Rim Sheet sections by removing and discarding the (4) 5/16 x 1/4 Flat Socket Head Cap Screws. With the Screws removed, the Rim Sheet sections and Liner can be temporarily removed to facilitate Liner replacement.

6.

Remove the Rim Sheet Liner by loosening and removing all (14) 5/16 x 3/4 Plow Bolts.

7.

Before installing the new Liner, thoroughly clean the Rim Sheet in the area where the Liner is secured. Then, properly orient and secure the new Liner using the new Plow Bolts furnished. When securing the Plow Bolts, start tightening from the Outlet end and work toward the splice end.

8.

After the new Liner is installed, replace the Rim Sheet section and reattach it by installing (4) new 5/16 x 1/4 Flat Socket Head Cap Screws (provided). Before replacing the large U-bolt, apply an adequate coat of grease into the Rim Sheet beads. Rotate the Rim Sheet around and replace the Blower Outlet. Refer to the Adjust­ ments chapter under the Swing-away Blower Out­ let topic for repositioning the Outlet. Once the desired Rim Sheet position and Blower Outlet position are obtained, tightly secure the 1/2 Nuts on the large U-bolt. Refer to the Blower Outlet Angle topic in the Adjustments chapter for straight-vertical realignment details. Torque the 1/2 Nuts to 40 ft-Ib (21Nm).

NOTE:

If Paddles are wornout and replaced, the Rim Sheet Liner should be inspected for signs of excessive wear and replaced per details provided in this chapter.

RIM SHEET LINER (Fig. 9-3 & See Fig. 9-1)

A WARNING To safely remove and replace the Rim Sheet Liner, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (Page 8) and remove the Telescoping Drive connection from the Blower Shaft.

If the Blower Rim Sheet Liner is worn or damaged, a

Rim Sheet Liner Kit (076787, 1540/1580)(082473, 1560) must be ordered and installed per the following: 1.

Remove and retain the Blower Outlet by detach­ ing the Hinges from the Outlet.

2.

Loosen the Rim Sheet by loosening the (2) 1/2 Nuts on the large U-bolt. Then, rotate the Rim Sheet toward the Spinner Hopper so as to bring the Rim Sheet splice to an accessible location on the left side ofthe Blower Fan Housing above the Saddle.

NOTE: Tap Rim Sheet beads with a piece of wood or leather-covered mallet until the torque value stabi­ lizes.

NOTE: After the Liner is replaced, BE SURE to recheck the Paddles and Cutoff Knife adjustments per appropriate details in the Adjustments chapter.

9.

Replace and resecure all Guards and Access Covers before attempting to resume operation.

Air Relief Vent (Fig. 9-4) Wipe the Air Relief Vent and the surrounding area clean at the start of each day. The purpose of the Vent

is to relieve any pressure build-up within the Transmis­ sion. A clogged faulty Vent can cause the pressure to escape thru the Seals creating oil leaks.

The Vent should be positioned on top of the Transmis­ sion on the Hopper side. A 1/8 Pipe Plug is also provided and located on top of the Transmission on the Blower Outlet side. If the Vent and Plug are NOT on their appropriate sides, oil will leak-out of the Vent; interchange the two parts immediately.

WATER INJECTION SYSTEM (Fig. 9-5) NOTE: The Water Injection System is furnished as standard equipment on the FB1580 model and can be field-installed on the FB1540 and FB1560 models.

Two Injection Nozzles are provided to inject water into the Spinner Disc areas. If the Nozzles become plugged, they can be unplugged in the following manner:

The following conversion procedure MUST be carried out with the Telescoping Drive discon­ nected from the tractor and Forage Blower.

The Transmission itself weighs approximate­ ly 1151b (52 kg). BE SURE to use an overhead holst (or other suitable and safe lifting means) to accommodate the weight Of the Transmis­ sion when It Is detached.

BE SURE the Spinner Nozzles are facing

Proceed as follows:

As required, to unplug the Spinner Nozzles, first crimp the Hose leading to the Rim Sheet. Then, turn-on the water supply to cause the pressure to go to the Spinner Nozzles. If only one Nozzle opens, place your finger over the open Nozzle to block it off and direct the pressure to the other clogged Nozzle. If one or both of the Nozzles stay plugged, they may have to be removed and unplugged by passing a small diameter wire thru the opening to dislodge the plugging material.

With the Telescoping PTO Drive disconnected from the Transmission, remove also the PTO Shield, the Rear Guard, the front and rear Air Intake Covers and, the front and rear Spinner Tunnel Covers. If the Forage Blower has been used for some time, scrape off and clean away material buildup from the Blower Fan Disc, the inside walls of the Sidesheets and as much

material as possible which falls down into the bottom of the Blower Fan Housing.

2.

Working through the Blower Outlet opening in the Rim Sheet and the Air Intake holes, proceed to loosen, remove and retain the (4) 1/2 x 1 Bolts which are securing the Transmission Housing to the front Sidesheet.

3.

Loosen, remove and retain the (8) 1/2 x 2-1/4 Bolts that secure the Transmission Hub to the Fan Hub. The head of the Bolts are on the front side of the Fan Disc and can be held with a locking grip pliers or boxwrench through the front Air Inlet hole. The Nuts can be turned loose with a socket and extension routed thru an access hole in the Rear Sidesheet just above the rear Main Bearing.

tapped holes in the Fan Hub at the back of the Blower. Using the same access hole in the Rear Sidesheet and a socket, alternately tighten the (2) 1/2 Bolts into the Fan Hub so that they butt against the Transmission Hub and eventually separate the two Hubs.

After steps 1,2 and 3 are completed, the Transmis sion is ready to be pulled-away from the Fan Disc. Place an appropriate number of field-fabri­ cated shims under the Front Paddles to prevent the Disc from tipping forward and angling downward when the Transmission is moved away, using an overhead hoist. If the Transmis­ sion Hub does NOT conveniently separate from the Fan Hub, thread two 1/2 Bolts into the two 1/2

5.

After the Transmission is removed, inspect it for any oil leaks around the Seals. If the Seals are leaky, they should be replaced before the Trans­ mission is replaced. Contact your local GEHL dealer for repair parts.

6.

To change the Blower input speed, the opposite end of the Transmission MUST be installed into the Blower and oriented so that the arrow points up. BE SURE to thoroughly clean and generously grease all mating parts before reinstalling the Transmission. Unscrew the Hub from one end of the Transmission and the Nut and Lock Washer from the other end. Before reinstalling the parts on opposite ends, coat each shaft (threads and keyway) with silicone RTVI0S sealant. Thread parts onto shaft and tighten until bearing drag is felt. DO NOT over-tighten.

11. Reinstall and resecure all of the Guards and Covers removed in step 1.

7.

Install the eight 1/2 x 2-1/4 Cap Screws with 1/2 Nuts in the holes in the Hub. Torque all eight 1/2 Nuts to 75 ft-Ib (102 Nm).

13. With the proper Shear Bolts installed, connect the Telescoping PTO to the tractor PTO and testrun the unit empty before attempting to blow material.

BE SURE the Blower Fan Disc is centered be­ tween the Sidesheets. As necessary, loosen the Rear Bearing Collar and slide the Transmission, in or out as required, until the Fan is centerd.

Rotate the Fan and check the centering through several locations before tightening the Rear Bear­ ing Collar.

Reinstall and resecure the (4) 1/2 x 1 Bolts to fasten the Transmission to the Front Sidesheet.

As required, place the appropriate number of 1/2 Plain Washers between the Front Sidesheet and Transmission to take-up the gap which may have developed while centering the Fan Disc.

10. Switch the 1/S" Pipe Plug and Relief Vent on top of the Transmission. When switched, the Air Vent should be located closest to the Hopper.

12. Using the new Telescoping PTO Drive connec­ tion, make the necessary couplings to the Trans­ mission Input using the original mounting hardware.

CHAPTER 10 PREPARING FOR FIELD OPERATION TRACTOR CONNECTION (Fig. 10·1) The FB 1540 is operated by a 540 RPM tractor and the FB 1560 is operated by a 1000 RPM tractor. The FB 1580 is available for operation by either 540 or 1000 RPM tractors; depending on the factory setting of the Transmission.

A WARNING NEVER attempt to operate a 540 RPM unit by a 1000 RPM tractor.

The following hook-up provisions should be made in accordance with A.S.A.E. standards: 1a.

For a 540 RPM hook-up, the tractor hitch point of the drawbar should be set 14" behind the end of the PTO shaft.

lb. For a 1000 RPM hook-up, the tractor hitch point of the drawbar should be set 16" behind the end of the PTO shaft.

The tractor hitch point of the drawbar should be set at least 6" but NOT more than 12" below the center-line of the tractor PTO shaft.

The tractor hitch point of the drawbar should be set at least 13" but NOT more than 22" above the ground.

A CAUTION Do NOT start the tractor until ALL Guards and Shields are properly secured In place. Do NOT attempt to start the tractor unless the Swlng­ away Blower Outlet Is properly locked closed.

BE SURE that the Telescoping Drive Locking Coupler(s) are positively engaged onto the shaft(s). BE SURE that the Rotating PTO Shield Is properly lubricated and turns freely.

NEVER attempt to operate the Forage Blower unless It Is properly hitched to the tractor drawbar. BEFORE proceeding to operate the unit, check that the Spinner Hopper and Blower Fan are clear of material and foreign objects.

CHAPTER 11 TRANSPORTING SLOW-MOVING VEHICLE EMBLEM (Fig. 11-1)

A CAUTION Do NOT exceed a maximum speed of 20 mph (32 kmh) when towing the Forage Blower. The Forage Blower Is designed to remain hooked­ up to the tractor at all times. The unit Is primarily a stationary machine which Is only towed between silos and farm build Ings. If the Blower Is towed over a public highway, BE SURE to obtain and use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem and attach It Into the SMV Mounting Bracket provided on the back of the Blower. Depending on local laws, an auxllllary tow chain may be required.

GEHL Company complies with all laws for safety when transporting slow-moving vehicles on public highways. Because of variations in the Safety Laws for different states and locations, it may be necessary to change the SMV Mounting Bracket location. Your GEHL Dealer can assist you in relocating the Bracket, if necessary.

LEVELING & SUPPORT STANDS AND PTO (Figs. 11-1 & 11-2) Whenever the Forage Blower is moved from its operat­ ing location, the Leveling and Support Stands should be raised and securely locked in their "transporting" positions. Also, raise the Right Tire Guard (if present) and make sure that the Knobs are tightly secured. In addition, BE SURE the unit is raised-up and properly leveled, from side to side, using the Left Axle Adjust­ ment.

NOTE:

BE SURE to remove the Telescoping PTO Drive connection from the tractor PTO shaft and place it in the PTO Hanger provided BEFORE transporting the unit.

CHAPTER 12 STORAGE At the end of the harvesting season, it is suggested that the following steps be performed:

Store the Blower in a dry place where it is neither exposed to weather or livestock.

Release the Spinner Drive Belt Idler tension by disengaging the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff.

Clean the Blower thoroughly of all dirt, trash, excess grease and any other material that may absorb water and cause rust. BE SURE also, that any and all water is removed from the Blower Housing.

Thoroughly lubricate the Blower as indicated in the Lubrication chapter of this manual.

3.

Clean and oil the Spinner Drive Chain.

4.

Paint all the parts from which the paint has been worn to prevent rust.

5.

Order and replace any required parts so that the Blower will be ready to operate the next season.

NOTE: Drain holes are provided at the base of the Blower Fan Housing on both sides and in the bottom of the Spinner Hopper below each Disc. BE SURE that the holes are open if the Forage Blower is going to stand outside in the elements. If the unit MUST be stored outside, use an inverted 5 gallon pail or other protective covering to seal the Blower Outlet opening.

Apply a rust preventative oil or grease to the Front and Rear Telescoping PTO Drive Hubs, the Blower Drive Shaft and the Spinner Drive Chain.

CHAPTER 14 SET-UP & ASSEMBLY GENERAL INFORMATION (Fig. 14-1) Blowers are shipped with the following standard com­ ponent completing parts NOT assembled to the Main Unit. These parts will have to be installed before the unit is ready to deliver.

NOTE:

Forage Blowers are provided with Lifting Holes with Access Covers on the Front and Rear Sidesheets to enable lifting the unit with an overhead hoist, for loading and unloading.

COMMON COMPONENT ASSEMBLY Drawbar & Turnbuckle (Fig. 14-2) The Drawbar and Turnbuckle, when shipped, are bolted to the rear of the unit. After detaching the two components, properly orient the assembly so that the open end of the Drawbar Channel faces downward.

Secure both corners of the Drawbar with 1/2 x 1-3/4 CS, P and LN. Place a 1/2P on each side of the Frame and install the Spacer between the 1/2P. Secure the pivot with (2) 1/2LN on each CS. After the Drawbar is attached to the Blower, attach the Turnbuckle to the Saddle with a 1/2 x 1-3/4 CS and LN.

Before proceeding, remove all components from the Spinner Hopper and detach the Drawbar and Turn buckle from the back of the unit.

Raise and properly block the Forage Blower up on each end to mount the Wheels and Tires. With the shipping skid removed and discarded, install each Wheel and Tire assembly so that the Valve Stem and Grease Fit­ tings are facing out. Place a 1/4 x 1-3/4 Cotter Pin thru the innermost hole in the Axle. Install Axle Washers on each side of the Wheel and secure the Wheel onto the Axle with a second 1/4 x 1-3/4 Cotter Pin. After both Tires and Wheels are installed, check the Tires for an inflation pressure of 55 to 60 PSIG (385 to 420 kPa) and grease the Fittings on each Wheel Hub.

OPTIONAL COMPONENT ASSEMBLY Small Grain Shield

A WARNING Do NOT attempt to operate the Forage Blower without a Hopper Baffle or an optional Small Grain Shield Installed and properly secured.

In addition, the Spinner Drive Emergency Shutoff MUST remain functional at all times.

The Small Grain Shield is designed to be installed over the Hopper Spinners to promote smooth flow of grains into the Hopper and to reduce material throw-out. The Shield is designed to be installed with or without the Hopper Hood assembly in place.

Baffle Removal & Shield Attachment (Figs. 14-4 & 14-5) 1.

Before the Shield can be installed, the Hood Baf­ fle MUST be removed. First, loosen, remove and retain 1 of the 2 Baffle Pivot, 3/8 x 1 CS and 3/8 IN. Then, open the S-Hook on the Baffle Stop Bracket (behind the Baffle) and detach the Limit­ ing Chain, The Baffle is now free to be removed from the Hood assembly. Replace the Baffle Pivot CS and IN. Properly orient and install the Small Grain Shield in the position and direction shown. The Shield is secured at the back with the same existing hard

Temporarily secure the Bulkhead and Hoses to the Frame.

Loosen the (3) center existing fasteners, which are securing the Strap and Rubber Skirt to the Hopper, just enough to provide clearance for slid­ ing the top edge of the Tire Guard assembly be­ tween the Strap and Rubber Skirt.

Slide the Guard assembly up in between the Strap and Skirt and place it over the two exposed 5/16 bolts protruding from the Spinner Rim Sheets.

Then, secure the Guard assembly in position with (2 each) 5/16L and WN.

Properly orient and install the Spinner Water Nozzles (570000) into the appropriate mounting holes in the Spinner Hopper. The Hex-portion of each Nozzle should fit into the slot provided and, when properly installed, the Nozzles will face away from each other. From outside the Hopper, install a Push-on Fastener (076278) to secure each Nozzle. Next, remove and discard the Zerk (Alemite) Fitting from both Nozzles.

Properly orient and connect the appropriate ends of the Spinner Water Hose assembly (076427) to the Spinner Nozzles and secure each connection with a Clamp (075665). Install a Clamp (056773) to anchor the longer hose portion and a second Clamp (056773) to anchor the supply portion of the Spinner Water Hose assembly to the Hopper.

Route the supply portion of the Spinner Water Hose assembly thru the hole in the front wall of the Hopper Frame, under the Spinner Hopper, over the Spinner Drive Shaft and, thru the hole in the back wall of the Hopper. Anchor the supply hose to the longer bolt securing the Bearing Retainer using a third Clamp (056773) attached with the 3/8N and 3/8L provided.

Route the supply portion of the Spinner Water Hose assembly up between the Blower Side Sheet and Tunnel and pass it thru the holes provided in the Saddle. The supply hose will be connected in a later step.

Check and, if necessary, open the two holes in the Fitting on top of the Rim Sheet. Then, install the Elbow Fitting (076429) into the Rim Sheet Fit­ ting and orient the Barbed Fitting of the Elbow so it faces the Hopper.

Using a Clamp (075665), fasten the appropriate end of the Rim Sheet Water Hose (076428) onto the Barbed Fitting of the Elbow.

Connect the open end of the Spinner Water Hose to the Barbed Fitting on the Tee on the end of the Rim Sheet Water Hose and secure the Hose with a fourth Clamp (075665).

SHEAR BOLTS Additional Shear Bolts are available in packaged quan­ tities of (8) per package. The normal duty 540 RPM (1540) Telescoping Drive uses (2) 5/16 x 2 Grade 5 Shear Bolts. The heavy duty 540 RPM (1540) Teles­ coping Drive uses (2) 5/16 x 1-3/4 Grade 8 Shear Bolts.

The heavy duty 540 RPM (1580) and 1000 RPM (1560/1580) use (2) 5/16 x 1-1/2 Grade 5 Bolts. Order Shear Bolts by the following numbers: 081655 for (8) 5/16 x 1-1/2 Grade 5, 901606 for (8) 5/16 x 1-3/4 Grade 8 Bolts and, 901605 for (8) 5/16 x 2 Grade 5 Bolts.

QUICK CLAMP (Fig. 15-2) The Quick Clamp (825014) is designed for use in cou­ pling the Blower Pipes to the Blower Outlet. This Clamp should NOT be used for coupling one Blower Pipe or Elbow to another Blower Pipe or Elbow.

BLOWER PIPES (Fig. 15-3) Four lengths of Blower Pipes are available to match various length requirements. Different lengths of Pipe section includes: a 2-foot section (825001), a 4-foot section (825002), a 6-foot section (825003), and an 8-foot section (825004). All Pipe sections have mating rims with (4) mounting holes for 5/16 diameter fas­ teners (purchased locally).

TELESCOPING PTO DRIVES A total of four different Telescoping PTO Drives are available to match the horsepower and RPM variations of the FB 1540 and 1580 model Forage Blowers. The FB1540 Forage Blower can be obtained with a normal duty (35 Series) 540 RPM Telescopiong Drive (800488) or with a heavy duty (55 Series) 540 RPM Telescoping Drive (825068). The FB1580 Forage Blower MUST be ordered for 540 RPM operation which requires a 540 RPM Telescoping Drive (804552) orfor 1000 RPM operation which requires a 1000 RPM Telescoping Drive (804556). All four Telescoping Drives have built-in Shear Flanges which are designed

TELESCOPING PIPE FITTING (Fig. 15-3) The Telescoping Pipe Fitting (825005) is available for adapting the Blower Pipes to the Blower Outlet. The Telescoping Pipe is designed to correctly fit inside a 4, 6 or 8-ft Blower Pipe. It will NOT work into a 2-foot Blower Pipe.

FLEXIBLE HOOD W/SPRINGS (Fig. 15-4) A Flexible Hood (Deflector) is available for terminat­ ing the Blower Pipes especially in applications where the direction of discharge is varied often. The Hood is provided with tension springs to help hold the adjusted position of the Hood. A matching rim is provided on the Hood with compatible (4) 5/16 diameter attaching holes for convenient adaptation to the GEHL Blower Pipes.

MISCELLANEOUS PIPE ACCESSORIES (Fig. 15-7) Depending on applications, GEHL Company also provides accessories which facilitate Forage Blower applications when blowing onto open piles. One acces­ sory is termed a Distributor Pipe (which adapts to 7"

to 9" diameter Blower Pipes) (825012) and the other accessory is termed a Hopper Section (825013) (which is required when using a Distributor Pipe with the Adjustable Deflector.

RIGHT TIRE GUARD (1540/1560 Only) A Right Tire Guard (802669) is available to protect the Tire under the Spinner Hopper. The Guard is designed to be lowered into position over the right Tire to help prevent accidentally puncturing the Tire with a pitch fork, during cleanup. Mounting details are provided in the Set-up & Assembly chapter.

WATER INJECTION SYSTEM(1540/1560 Only) The Water Injection System (802669) is available to reduce gumming and promote smoother material flow in the FB1540 and FB1560 Forage Blowers. The Sys­ tem is designed to inject water into the Blower Rim Sheet and into the Spinners areas. Mounting details are provided in the Set-up & Assembly chapter.

CHAPTER 16 DECAL LOCATIONS GENERAL INFORMATION

NEW DECAL APPLICATION

Decal Locations infonnation is provided to assist in the proper selection and application ofnew decals, in the eventthe original decal(s) become damaged or the machine is repainted. Refer to the listing for the illustration reference number, part number, description and quantity ofeachdecal provided in the Kit Refer to the appropriate illustration(s) for replacement location(s).

Surfaces MUST be free from dirt, dust, grease and other foreign material before applying the new Decal. To apply, remove the smaller portion of the decal backing paper and apply this part of the exposed adhesive backing to the clean surface while maintaining proper position and alignment Peel the other portion of the backing paper off slowly while applying hand pressure to smooth-out Decal surface.

NOTE: Refer to the SAFETY Chapter for the specific information provided on aI/ of the various Safety Decals furnished in the Decal Kit(s).

To insure proper selection of the correct replacement decals, compare all ofthe various closeup location photographs to your machine, before starting to refinish the unit Then, circle each pictured decal (on or otherwise applicable to your machine) while checking-offits part number in the listing. After you have verified all the decals needed for replacement, place any extra unnecessary decals aside for disposal.

ACAUTION ALWAYS observe Safety Rules shown on De­ cals. If Decals become damaged, or If the unit Is repainted, replace the Decals. If repainting, BE SURE that ALL Decals from the Klt(s) which apply to your machine, are affixed to your unit.
