Use only genuine Frontier service parts. Substitute parts will void the warranty and may not meet standards required for safe and satisfactory operation. Record the model number and serial number of your equipment in the spaces provided:

GENERAL INFORMATION The purpose of this manual is to assist you in operating and maintaining your Bale Unroller.

Read it carefully. It furnishes information and instructions that will help you achieve years of dependable performance.

These instructions have been compiled from field experience and engineering data. Some information may be general in nature, due to unknown and varying operating conditions.

However, through experience and these instructions, you should be able to develop procedures suitable to your particular situation.

The illustrations and data used in this manual were current at the time of printing. However, due to possible inline production changes, your machine may vary slightly in detail. We reserve the right to redesign and change the machines as may be necessary without notification.

Throughout this manual, references are made to right and left direction. These are determined by standing behind the tractor facing the direction of forward travel.

SAFETY RULES ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! Safety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture of our products. Unfortunately, our efforts to provide safe equipment can be wiped out by an operator’s single careless act.

In addition to the design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, judgement, and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment.

It has been said “The best safety device is an informed, careful operator.” We ask you to be that kind of operator.

■ Make sure attachment is properly secured, adjusted, and in good operating condition.

■ Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS cab and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely fastened. Falling off power unit can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable ROPS system in “locked up” position at all times.

■ A minimum 20% of tractor, attachment and bale weight must be on the tractor front wheels when attachments are in handling position. Without this weight, tractor could tip over, causing personal injury or death. The weight may be attained with a loader, front wheel weights, ballast in tires or front tractor weights. Weigh the tractor, equipment, and bale. Do not estimate.

TRAINING ■ Safety instructions are important! Read all attachment and power unit manuals; follow all safety rules and safety decal information.

(Replacement manuals are available from selling dealer.) Failure to follow instructions or safety rules can result in serious injury or death.

■ If you do not understand any part of this manual and need assistance, see your dealer.

■ Operators must be instructed in and be capable of the safe operation of the equipment, its attachments, and all controls. Do not allow anyone to operate this equipment without proper instructions.

■ Never allow children or untrained persons to operate equipment.

■ Train all new personnel and review instructions frequently with existing workers. A person who has not read and understood all operating and safety instructions is not qualified to operate the machine. An untrained operator exposes himself and bystanders to possible serious injury or death.

PREPARATION ■ Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid getting caught in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing, and head; and respirator or filter mask where appropriate.

HANDLING & TRANSPORTATION ■ Always comply with all state and local laws governing highway safety and lighting and marking requirements.

■ Never allow riders on power unit or attachment.

■ Do not operate or handle bales on steep slopes.

■ Use extreme care and reduce ground speed on slopes and rough terrain.

■ Do not operate or handle bales while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Consult your doctor about operating this machine while taking prescription medications.

■ Make sure large round bales handled on tractor rear 3 pt. hitch do not obstruct visibility of tractor’s flashing lights or SMV sign.

OPERATION ■ Always sit in power unit seat when operating controls or starting engine. Securely fasten seat belt, place transmission in neutral, engage brake, and ensure all other controls are disengaged before starting power unit engine.

■ Know your controls and how to stop engine and attachment quickly in an emergency.

■ Keep bystanders away from equipment when backing up to a bale. Make sure that people and animals are not between the implement and the bale.

■ Set the tread width of both front and rear tractor wheels wide for increased stability.

■ Keep hands, feet, hair, and clothing away from equipment while engine is running. Stay clear of all moving parts.

■ Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS cab and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely fastened. Falling off power unit can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable ROPS system in “locked up” position at all times.

■ Never allow riders on power unit or attachment.

■ Look down and to the rear and make sure area is clear before operating in reverse.

■ Use extreme care when working close to fences, ditches, other obstructions, or on hillsides.

■ Do not operate or transport on steep slopes.

■ Do not stop, start, or change directions suddenly on slopes. Always drive down slopes; never across the face.

■ Use extreme care and reduce ground speed on slopes and rough terrain.

■ Keep alert and watch the front as well as the rear when working with the 3 pt. bale unroller.

■ When handling large round bales, keep load as low as practical to maximize tractor stability.

■ Never use the tractor or implement to stop a rolling bale.

■ Do not handle bales that exceed the bale weight limitations of the implement or tractor.

Watch for bales that are frozen to the ground.

■ Always make sure bales are placed so the bales are stable.

■ When maneuvering close to buildings or through narrow areas, allow sufficient clearance for the tractor, loader, and rear 3 pt. attachment.

Drive slowly.

■ Before leaving operator’s seat, lower lift arms and put attachment on the ground. Engage brake, stop engine, remove key, and remove seat belt.

MAINTENANCE ■ Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid getting caught in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing, and head; and respirator or filter mask where appropriate.

■ Never go underneath equipment (lowered to the ground or raised) unless it is properly blocked and secured. Never place any part of the body underneath equipment or between moveable parts even when the engine has been turned off. Hydraulic system leak down, hydraulic system failures, mechanical failures, or movement of control levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly and cause severe injury or death.

■ Make sure attachment is properly secured, adjusted, and in good operating condition.

■ Before leaving operator’s seat, lower lift arms and put attachment on the ground. Engage brake, stop engine, remove key, and remove seat belt.

■ Never perform service or maintenance with engine running.

■ Keep all persons away from operator control area while performing adjustments, service, or maintenance.

■ Openings in the skin and minor cuts are susceptible to infection from hydraulic fluid. If injured by escaping hydraulic fluid, see a doctor at once. Gangrene and death can result. Without immediate medical treatment, serious infection and reactions can occur.

■ Check all bolts. Make sure they are properly adjusted or tightened.

■ Make sure all safety decals are installed.

Replace if damaged. (See Safety Decals section for location.)

STORAGE ■ Block equipment securely for storage.

■ Keep children and bystanders away from storage area.

Use a clean, damp cloth to clean safety decals.

Avoid spraying too close to decals when using a pressure washer; high-pressure water can enter through very small scratches or under edges of decals causing them to peel or come off.

Replacement safety decals can be ordered free from your dealer.

5 Safety

DEALER ASSEMBLY DEALER SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS Assembly of this Bale Unroller is the responsibility of the Frontier dealer. It should be delivered to the owner completely assembled, lubricated and adjusted.

Install the lift pins into the pull brackets on the main frame. For Category I tractors, the pins go to the inside – for Category II tractors, the pins go to the outside of the brackets.

The clamp arms are reversible to allow the Model BU1060 to handle a range of bale widths. (See Figure A.) Assembling the clamp arms to the outside will provide a handling range for bales 52” to 62” in width.

Assembling the arms to the inside allows the handling of narrower width bales, from 42” to 52”.

NOTE: The 11/4” bolts should be inserted with the head of the bolt against the welded tab on the clamp arm. This welded tab ensures that the bolt moves with the arm, which distributes the load over the entire bushing and bolt surface. This installation will result in one bolt head up and the other down.

NOTE: It is recommended that grease be applied to the 1 1/4” bolt and the top and bottom surface of the main frame prior to assembly. This provides good initial lubrication to the pivot.

Tighten the 1 1/4” nuts until the looseness is gone from the clamp arm, but not so tight that the clamp arm won’t swing easily.

Insert a cylinder pivot arm through the upside down “U” shaped bracket with the 3/4” diameter hole forward. Install a 3/4” x 2” bolt through the 3/4” hole in the pivot arm and the tab on the front of the main frame.

Install a 3/4” nylock locking nut and tighten until the looseness is gone, but the arm can still move side to side within the “U” bracket. Repeat this on the other side.

Place one of the push arms on top of the front plates of the clamp arms and install the 3/4” x 2” bolt with the nylock nut and tighten as described previously. Repeat this procedure on the other side.

Place the spike spinner assemblies into the horizontal sockets on each end of the clamp arms and secure with the thrust washers and 1/4” x 21/2” cotter pin.

Lubricate with grease before installing.

Place the hydraulic cylinder with the hydraulic ports on top into position at the center of the main frame.

Connect each end of the hydraulic cylinder with the 1” cylinder clevis pins to both the push arm and the cylinder pivot arm (both arm ends are inside cylinder clevis).

NOTE: Use a 2” x 8” double-acting hydraulic cylinder.

Connect the hydraulic hoses to the hydraulic cylinder.

Inspect the equipment thoroughly after assembly to be certain it is set up properly before delivering it to the customer. The following check list is a reminder of points to inspect. Check off each item if it is found satisfactory or after proper adjustment is made.

7 Dealer Check Lists

____ Show customer the safe, proper procedures to be used when mounting, dismounting, and storing equipment. ____ For mounted units, add wheel weights, ballast in front tires, and/or front tractor weight to enhance front end stability. A minimum 20% of tractor and bale gross weight must be on front tractor wheels. When adding weight to attain 20% of tractor and bale weight on front tractor wheels, you must not exceed the ROPS weight certification. Weigh the tractor, equipment, and bale. Do not estimate! ____ Show customer how to make adjustments. ____ Explain to customer the potential crushing hazards of going underneath raised equipment. The Model BU1060 Bale Unroller is designed for use on Category II tractors with a 3 pt. hitch or a standard Category II quick hitch. It will also work on larger Category I tractors for handling smaller size bales, if the Category I tractor is properly equipped with front end weights.

The Model BU1060 Bale Unroller will transport and unroll round bales up to 2000 pounds. The BU1060 will handle bales from 42” to 62” in width. The Bale Unroller can handle bale diameters up to 72” (6’).

NOTE: The BU1060 is designed for handling and unrolling large round hay bales only. NEVER attempt to use it for any other purpose.

WARNING ■ Do not exceed the maximum recommended large round bale weight listed for Bale Unroller.

Damage to the equipment or serious personal injury could result.

CONNECTING 3 PT. BALE UNROLLER TO TRACTOR The required size of the tractor will be determined by the size and weight of the bales to be handled.

Remember, high moisture hay (silage) bales are very heavy in relation to similar size dry hay bales.

Always use a tractor large enough to safely handle your bales.

The Model BU1060 3 pt. bale unroller is compatible with Category I and II, 3 point tractors equipped with side swing-type lower lift arms.

1. To avoid interference with the bale unroller, adjust tractor drawbar to the shortest and highest position.

3. Tractor must be equipped with stabilizer bars, adjustable sway chains, or sway blocks to keep the implement and bale from swinging side to side.

4. Attach the tractor’s top link to the top of the bale unroller mast and secure with the top link pin and retaining pin supplied with the top link.

For Category II Quick Hitch application, order optional bushing kit part #5WS862530 (one pair); place bushing over draw pin and fasten with roll pin.

Also order part #5WS590066 (one) toplink spacer bushing.

For Category II hitches, the draw pins go to the outside of the lower lift brackets.

For Category I Quick Hitch application, order optional bushing kit part #5WS862530 (one pair); place bushing over draw pin and fasten with roll pin.

Also order part #5WS590066 (one) toplink spacer bushing.

For Category I hitches, the draw pins go to the inside of the lower lift brackets.

For Category I hitches where a Quick Hitch is NOT used, install the optional Category I draw pins to the inside of the lift brackets. (Order part #5WS590332).

Smaller size tractors may need front counter weights to counter-balance the weight of the implement.

Place your hydraulic cylinder with the hydraulic ports on top into position at the center of the main frame. Connect each end of the hydraulic cylinder with the 1” cylinder clevis pins to both the push arm and the cylinder pivot arm (both arm ends are in cylinder clevis).

2. Attach the tractor’s lower lift arms to the bale unroller and secure in place with lock pin.

NOTE: Use a 2” x 8” double-acting hydraulic cylinder.

For the Model BU1060 3 pt. unroller and Category I hitches, the draw pins go to the inside of the lower lift brackets. For Category II hitches, the draw pins go to the outside of the lift brackets.

DO NOT USE A HYDRAULIC CYLINDER LARGER THAN 2” DIAMETER.

9 Operation

Operation Cont’d CONNECTING 3 PT. BALE UNROLLER TO TRACTOR (cont’d) Connect your hydraulic hoses to the hydraulic cylinder and to the remote hydraulic ports on the tractor.

Make sure hydraulic hoses are routed so they will not be pinched by movement of the Bale Unroller or any parts of the 3 pt. linkage.

Start the tractor and raise the Bale Unroller and remove the blocking placed during assembly. Grease the clamp arm pivots and the spike spinner sockets at the end of the clamp arms.

Cycle the hydraulic cylinder several times to remove air from the cylinder and lines. Make sure area is clear, as clamp arms will swing out.

Close the clamp arms until the bale is gripped securely between the two spike spinner assemblies and raise the tractor’s 3 pt. hitch.

The bale is ready for handling.

NOTE: In cold weather, a bale frozen to the ground may exceed the lifting capacity of BU1060 Bale Unroller. Damage to unroller attachment may occur.

Not covered under warranty.

Attaching the 3 pt. bale unroller to the tractor increases the overall length of the working unit. Allow additional clearance for the implement and bale when turning.

WARNING OPERATION Be sure tractor is properly counter-balanced with weights before attempting to lift any load with the BU1060 Bale Unroller.

If you are handling bales with both the front end loader and the 3 pt. hitch on the tractor, always load the 3 pt. attachment first and unload last.

The Bale Unroller can be tilted within a wide range by choosing one of three (3) hole positions in the mast and by adjusting the top link. This adjustment range allows you to vary the height so that the clamp arm can be raised to best handle your size bales.

The Bale Unroller should be tilted slightly down at the rear so the spinners will roll on the ground. This allows almost complete unrolling of the bale.

Before attempting to move or unroll a large round hay bale, examine the bale and determine which way the bale is wrapped. The bale needs to be gripped so it will unroll from the bottom as it is rolled forward on the ground.

Position your tractor square with the bale and open the clamp arms all the way. Back the tractor until the spike spinners are close to the center of the bale.

Bales should be gripped at the center of the ends of the bale only.

■ A heavy load can cause instability in driving a tractor. Make sure the tractor is properly counter-balanced with weights. Always drive slowly – especially around turns. An unstable tractor could steer badly and possibly tip over, causing injury or death.

WARNING ■ Never operate the Bale Unroller when anyone is within 10’ of the tractor or implement.

Be careful when backing up with a bale on the back of the tractor. Remember – visibility is limited. Check area carefully before backing.

WARNING ■ When moving large round hay bales to a storage area – make sure storage area you select is level and that the hay bale will not roll when released. A rolling hay bale is dangerous and could cause injury or death.

HANDLE ROUND BALES SAFELY

The Bale Unroller allows you to change your feeding area and eliminate the manure piles that can occur when using hay feeders.

• Do not handle bales that exceed the bale weight limitations of the bale unroller.

You can control how much hay is fed to eliminate waste. Feed only an amount of hay that the cattle will clean up in one feeding. You may need to experiment with the amount for a few days to establish the correct amount. Allow for badly damaged or weathered hay.

By unrolling the hay in a long ribbon, all cattle have an equal opportunity to eat and the cattle are in a line for easy examination.

Before unrolling the bale, it is necessary to remove the twine or netting from the bale.

CAUTION ■ Make sure brakes are securely set before getting off the tractor. NEVER place any part of your body under the raised bale when removing twine or netting from the bale.

To unroll the bale, simply lower the bale to the ground and drive forward slowly. It may be necessary to continue lowering the bale to keep it in contact with the ground.

Keep a lookout forward to avoid any obstacles or livestock that might be in the way.

When you have unrolled the amount of hay you want to feed, raise the 3 pt. hitch and the bale will stop unrolling any hay. Drive the unit outside the feeding area and the bale may be released for feeding the remainder at a later time.

11 Operation

• Carry the bale slowly and as low as possible to the ground.

• Operate the hydraulic controls smoothly, avoiding jerky operation.

• Never use the tractor to stop a rolling bale.

• Only use a tractor equipped with a ROPS cab or roll-over protective structure.

• Travel slowly over rough ground or when making turns.

• Attaching the 3 pt. bale unroller to the tractor increases the overall length of the working unit.

Allow additional clearance for implement and bale when turning.

• Use particular care when working on inclines and hillsides.

TRANSPORTING • Pay particular close attention to the Safety Messages regarding handling and transport.

Avoid unnecessary injuries and equipment damage by exercising cautious, conscientious travel procedures.

• Make sure large round bales transported on tractor rear 3 pt. hitch do not obstruct visibility of tractor’s flashing lights or SMV sign.

OWNER SERVICE The information in this section is written for operators who possess basic mechanical skills. If you need help, your dealer has trained service technicians available. For your protection, read and follow the safety information in this manual.

WARNING ■ NEVER GO UNDERNEATH EQUIPMENT. Never place any part of the body underneath equipment or between moveable parts even when the engine has been turned off. Hydraulic system leak down, hydraulic system failures, mechanical failures, or movement of control levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly and cause severe injury or death.

• Service work does not require going underneath.

• Read Manual for service instructions or have service performed by a qualified dealer.

CAUTION ■ Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid entanglement in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hands, hearing, and head.

WARNING ■ Keep all persons away from operator control area while performing adjustments, service, or maintenance.

■ Before dismounting power unit or performing any service or maintenance, follow these steps: disengage power to equipment, lower the 3 point hitch and all raised components to the ground, operate valve levers to release any hydraulic pressure, set parking brake, stop engine, remove key, and unfasten seat belt.

WARNING ■ Never use your hands to locate a hydraulic leak. Use a piece of cardboard or wood. Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can penetrate skin. Openings in skin and minor cuts are susceptible to infection from hydraulic fluid. If injured by escaping hydraulic fluid, see a doctor at once. Gangrene and death can result. Without immediate medical treatment, serious infection and reactions can occur.

MAINTENANCE Periodically lubricate all pivot points and spinner assemblies with a good grade of grease.

Check all bolts to make sure they are properly adjusted or tightened.

Check hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks and replace or tighten as necessary. Make sure hoses are not being pinched or chafed by movement of unit or 3 pt. hitch linkage.

Replace safety decals if damaged or missing.

Repaint parts where paint is worn or scratched to prevent rust.

STORING SAFELY • Always store the bale spear in a clean, dry location away from children and livestock.

• Store with arms clamped, so hydraulic cylinder rod is protected inside the cylinder.

• When storing the Bale Unroller, lower the parking stand. This will make hook-up to the tractor easier.

• Storage location should be level and solid to make hitching and unhitching easy.

1. Arm pivot binding.

Check 11/4” bolt – it may be too tight.

2. Arm pivot needs lubrication.

Grease pivot.

1. Twine still on bale.

Remove twine completely.

2. Bale may be frozen.

Try bouncing bale lightly on ground to loosen. You may have to use the ground to slough the first layer off bale to get it unrolling.

3. Bale is wrapped very tight.

Check that all twine is removed. Try bouncing the bale lightly on the ground to loosen it.

1. Hose being pinched.

Reroute hose and fasten out of harms way.

2. Hoses worn or frayed.

Replace hose.

3. Hydraulic relief pressure on power unit too high.

Adjust relief pressure (if possible) or change power unit.

4. Hose rating too low.

Replace hose with hose having higher rating.

One side arm moves in before other arm moves.

Bale won’t unwind.

Hydraulic hose failure.
