Passdefectivecomponentsremovedonforservicingwithoutdelayin ordertopreventthesepartsbeingreinstalledelsewhere.

Forraisingthebatteryuseonly:

■ cribblockswithadequateload-holdingcapacity.

■ hoists,jacksorcraneswithadequateload-carryingcapacity.

Onlypersonswhohaveandcandemonstrateaspecialknowledgeof electricsareallowedtoworkontheelectricalsystem.

Avoid,wheneverpossible,servicing,cleaningorexaminingthebattery incongestedareas.

Alwaysreplacedamagedorlostdecalsandmetalinstructionplates.

Disconnectthebatterywhenworkingwiththeelectricalsystem,or whenweldingontheunit,topreventelectricalshock.

Besurethebatteryareaiswellventilated(clearoffumes)whenitis necessarytoconnectbatterycharger.Fumesfromthebatterycould ignitefromasparkandexplode.

Alwaysfollowallsafetyproceduresofeachparticularminewhenperformingmaintenance.

Itisimportantthatanyprocedurenotspecificallyrecommendedinthis guidebethoroughlyevaluatedfromthestandpointofsafetybeforeitis implemented.

Someillustrationsinthismanualshowguardsorcoverpanelsremoved forpurposesofclarity.Neveroperatebatterywithoutguardsorcover panelsinplace.

Safetyinstructions

Batteryhazards

Alead-acidbatterycanbeveryuseful,safesourceofelectricalpower. However,whileinstalling,using,maintaining,orrepairingamotive powerbattery,opportunitiesexistforexposuretopotentiallydangerous situations.Thissectionidentifiesthosehazardswhichcouldresultfrom improperhandlingoruse.

Asulfuricacidsolutionisusedastheelectrolyteinlead-acidbatteries andhasaconcentrationofapproximately37%byweightofsulfuricacid inwater.Inthisdilutedstate,itisnotashazardousasstrongorconcentratedsulfuricacid,butitactsasanoxidizingagentandcanburn theskinoreyesanddestroyclothingmadeofmanycommonmaterials suchascottonorrayon.

Anexplosivemixtureofhydrogenandoxygenisproducedinaleadacidbatterywhileitisbeingcharged.Thegasescancombineexplosivelyifasparkorflameispresenttoignitethem.Becausehydrogenis solight,itnormallyrisesanddiffusesintotheairbeforeitcanconcentrateinanyexplosivemixture.Ifitaccumulatesintogaspockets,as canoccurwithinacell,itmightexplodeifignited.

Electricityisproducedbythebatteriesondischargeand,whilemost personscannot"feel"voltagesbelow35to40volts,allminepowerbatteriesshouldberegardedaspotentiallydangerous.Alead-acidbattery iscapableofdischargingatextremelyhighratesand,underconditions ofdirectshorting,cancausedamageandseriousinjury.

Theweightoftheseheavybatteriescaneasilycausepainfulstrainsor crushedhandsorfeetifimproperlyliftedorhandled.Batteriescanbe damagedifdropped.Theaverageminepowerbatteryweighsmore thanoneton,soproperequipmentmustbeprovidedwhenchangingor handlingbatteries.

Burnscanresultfromcontactwithmoltenleadorhotcompoundwhile repairingabattery.Leadcansplashwhenintercellconnectorsarebeingreburnedandhotcompoundcanbespilledwhenresealingcovers tojars.Theprotectivegearprovided,ifworn,willpreventsuchburns.

Overviewofsafetyinstructions

Safetyprocedures

CongresspassedtheOccupationalSafetyandHealthAct(OSHA)in 1970.Thisactestablishedtheminimalacceptablestandardsforsafe andhealthfulworkingconditions.Thesafetyproceduressuggestedin thismanualhavebeencompiledfromstandardsdevelopedoverthe yearsbyprofessionalandtechnicalorganizationsandbybatterymanufacturersandusers.Experiencehasshownthemtobethemosteffectivesafetystandards.Inallcases,theyexceedtheminimumstandards ofOSHAforpersonalsafetyandincludeproceduresforsafeguarding equipmentaswell.

Thesafetyprocedureshavebeengroupedbyfunctionalareaofmost logicalapplicationorneed.

■ Liftbatterieswithmechanicalequipment,suchasanoverhead hoist,craneorlifttruck.Aproperlyinsulatedliftingbeam,ofadequatecapacity,shouldalwaysbe usedwithoverheadliftingequipment.Donotusechainsattachedtoahoistatasinglecentral pointformingatriangle.Thisprocedureisunsafeandcoulddamagethesteeltray.

■ Alwayswearsafetyshoesandsafetyglasses.

■ Tools,chains,andothermetallicobjectsshouldbekeptawayfrom thetopofuncoveredbatteriestopreventpossibleshortcircuits.

■ Batteryoperatedequipmentshouldbeproperlypositionedwith switchoff,brakeset,andbatteryunpluggedwhenchangingbatteriesorchargingthemwhileintheequipment.

■ Personnelwhoworkaroundbatteriesshouldnotwearjewelry madefromaconductivematerial.Metalitemscanshortcircuita batteryandcouldcausesevereburns.

■ Onlytrainedandauthorizedpersonnelshouldbepermittedto changeorchargebatteries.

■ Reinstalledbatteriesshouldbeproperlypositionedandsecuredin theunit.Beforeinstallinganewordifferentbattery,checkboththe unitnameplateandbatteryserviceweighttomakesurethatthe properweightbatteryisbeingused.Abatteryofthewrongweight couldchangethecenterofgravityandcauseequipmenttoupset.

whilechargingbatteries

■ Specificareasshouldbe designatedforchargingbatteries.

■ Chargingareasshouldbeadequatelyventilated.Theactual amountofventilationwilldependuponsuchfactorsasnumberand sizeofbatteriesbeingchargedatthesametime,roomsize,ceiling heightandair-tightnessofthebuilding. Hydrogenconcentrations above4%canbeexplosive.

■ Smoking,openflames,andsparksshouldallbeprohibitedinthe chargingarea.Postplacards"Hydrogen","FlammableGas”,“No Smoking",and"NoOpenFlames".

■ Facilitiesshouldbeprovidedforflushingandneutralizingspilled electrolyte,forfireprotection(includinghand-operatedfireextinguishers),andforprotectingchargingequipmentfromdamageby units.

■ Freshwatershouldalwaysbeavailableincaseelectrolyteis splashedonskin,clothing,orintoeyes.Thekindsofequipment availableforeye-washandacidneutralizationvarywidely.A squeezebottlecontainingabufferingsolutionforreliefofacid burnsshouldbelocatedintheimmediateworkarea.Theseshould beclearlyidentifiedandreadilyaccessible.

■ Beforeconnectingabatteryto,ordisconnectingitfrom,acharger, thechargershouldbeturnedoff.Liveleadscancausearcingand pittingofbatteryconnectorcontactsurfaces.

■ Makesurethatallelectricalconnectionsaretightandmechanically soundtopreventanyarcingorlossofpower.

■ Wearafaceshieldorgoggles,rubbergloves,apron,andboots whenchecking,filling,charging,orrepairingbatteriesduringperiodsofpossibleexposuretoacidorelectrolyte.

■ Whencharginganenclosedorcoveredbattery,alwayskeepthe batterytraycover,orcompartmentcover,openduringthecharging period.Thiswillhelptokeepthebatterycoolanddispersethe gases.

■ Keepventcapsinplaceatalltimesexceptwhileservicingorrepairingcells.Thisminimizesthelossofelectrolyteandprevents foreignmatterfromenteringthecells.

■ Shutoff anddisconnectbothinputandoutputconnectionstothe chargerbeforechargingequipment.

whilehandlingacids ■ ThesplashingofacidIntotheeyesisthemostdangerous conditionencounteredwhilehandlingsulfuricacidorelectrolyte. Ifthisshouldhappen,theeyesshouldimmediatelybegently floodedwithclean,fresh,runningwaterforatleast15minutes,followedasquicklyaspossiblewithaphysician'sexamination.Ifthe personiswearingcontactlenses,theyshouldberemovedbefore rinsingtheeyes.

WARNING!

Donotuseabufferingorneutralizingagentintheeyeswithout medicalapproval.

■ Acidorelectrolytesplashedontotheskinshouldbewashedoff underrunningwater.Batteryelectrolytewillusuallyonlycause irritationoftheskin;ifaburndevelops,itshouldbetreatedmedically.

■ Whenelectrolyteissplashedonclothing,useaweaksolutionof bicarbonateofsoda,assoonaspossible,toneutralizetheacid.

■ Acarboytilterorsafetysiphonshouldbeprovidedforhandlingacid fromacarboycontainer.Usetheprotectiveboxwhenmovinga carboy.Storeacidinacoolplaceoutofthedirectraysofthesun. Useonlyglass,rubber,lead,oracid-resistantplasticcontainers whenstoringacidorelectrolyte.

■ Whenmixingacidtoprepareelectrolyte,alwayspourtheacid slowlyintothewaterandstirconstantlytomixwell.Neverpour waterIntoacid.Neverusesulfuricacidsolutionswhichareover 1.400specificgravity.

■ Applyaneutralizingsolution,suchasbicarbonateofsodaandwater,whenacidisspilledonfloor.Cleanupaffectedareapromptly. Amixtureofonepoundofsodatoonegallonofwaterisrecommended.

■ Disconnectthebatteryfromtheunitwhenservicingorrepairing eitherthebatteryortheequipment.Also,makecertainthebattery isdisconnectedfromthechargerbeforehandlingorrepairingthe battery.

■ Beforerepairingabattery,removealloftheventcapsandblowout eachcellwithalowpressureairhosetoremoveanyresidualgas. Useonlyagentlestreamofairtoavoidsplashingelectrolyte. Do notblowbreathintocells.

■ Openor"break"thecircuitbeforerepairingdamagedordirtyterminalplugsorreceptaclesconnectedtoabatterybyremovingand insulatingoneterminalleadatatime.

■ Whenmeltingsealingcompoundinpreparationforresealingcells, becarefulnottopuncturethetopsectionofunmeltedcompound withascrewdriverorotherpointedobject.Abuild-upofpressure fromthemeltedcompoundinthebottomcouldcauseliquidcompoundtosquirtandinflictasevereburn.Donotallowcompoundto ignitebyoverheating.Compoundbecomesworkableat400°Fto 425°F.

■ Checkbatteriesfrequentlyforacidleakageorsignsofcorrosion.

■ Useinsulatedtoolswheneverpossiblewhenworkingonbatteries. Ifpossible,alsocovertheterminalsandconnectorsofabattery withasheetofplywoodorotherinsulatingmaterialtopreventshort circuits.

■ Whentakingspecificgravityreadings,useafaceshieldorgoggles andreadthehydrometerwithyoureyeataboutthesamelevelas theelectrolyte.Returnallelectrolytetothecell.

Makecertainthatthepositiveterminalofthebatteryisconnected tothepositiveterminalofthechargerandthatthenegative terminalofthebatteryisconnectedtothenegativeterminalofthe charger.Permanentdamagetothebatteryorchargermayresultif thebatteryisconnectedincorrectly.

Propereyeandbodyprotectionmustbewornatalltimeswhen servicingbatteriestopreventelectricalshockandcontactwith batteryacid.Cleanandneutralizeanyacidspillimmediately.

WARNING! Batteriesmustberestingsecurelyinamachine,onabatterytable, orplatformcapableofsupportingtheweightofthebatterywhile performingmaintenanceorserviceonthebattery.Mineservice batteriescanweighseveralthousandpoundsandcouldcause severeinjuryordeathshouldthebatteryfallonapersonorona bodypart.

Whenpullinganelementfromacellwhichhasbeenremovedfrom abattery,usejarhold-downclamps.

Cellsfromwhichtheelementswerepulled,orwhichhaddamaged jarsreplaced,shouldbegivenanequalizingchargeandacid shouldbeadjustedimmediatelyfollowingrepair,beforetheyare returnedtoservice.

Cellsmustbeconnectedin serieswiththepositivesideofonecell connectedtothenegativesideoftheadjacentcell.

Alwaysbesurethecellsarepurgedofgasbeforeusinganopen flameorburningarcontopofthebattery.

Storageandtransport

Thischaptercontainsimportantinformationonthecorrectstorageand transportoftheminepowerstoragebattery.

. Observanceoftheinstructionsandtipswillincreasetheservicelifeand availabilityofthebattery.Youwillalsobeabletocarryoutthetransportworkquickerandmoresafely.Carefulattentiontothepointsin thischapterwillhelpyoutosimplifyyourday-to-daywork.

Storagemethods

Leadacidbatteriesmaybestoredinachargedandwet(filledwith electrolyte)conditionwhennecessaryforperiodsofuptoseveral months.Duringsuchperiodstheyshouldbestoredinaclean,cool, dry,andwellventilatedlocationawayfromradiators,hotairducts,or othersourcesofheat,andprotectedfromexposuretodirectsunlight.

Beforebeingstored,thebatteryshouldbefullychargedandtheelectrolytebroughttotheproperlevel.Anyleadsshouldbedisconnected orinsulatedtopreventaccidentaldischarge.Thetopofthebattery shouldbeprotectedfromdust,foreignmatter,andmoisture. Donot attempttodismantlethebattery.

Iftheaveragestoragetemperatureis80°Forhigher,thespecificgravityoftheelectrolyteshouldbecheckedatleastmonthly.Ifthetemperatureisbelow80°F,checkthespecificgravityatleasteverytwo months.Wheneverthespecificgravity,correctedto80°F,fallsto 1.240orbelow,thebatteryshouldbegivenafresheningchargeasdescribedinChapter5ofthismanual.Afresheningchargeisalsorecommendedjustbeforereturningabatterytoservice.

Newbatteriesareoftensuppliedchargedanddry(withoutelectrolyte). Batteriesinthisconditioncanremaininstorage,unattended,foraperiodofatleasttwoyears.Theyshouldbestoredinacool,dryplace withventcapstightlyclosed.Averagetemperaturesshouldnotexceed 80°F.

Batteriesshouldnotbestorednearradiators,hotairducts,orother sourcesofheat,andshouldbeprotectedfromexposuretodirect sunlight.Thetopofthebatteryshouldbeprotectedfromdust,foreign matter,andmoisture.

Whenremovedfromstorage,chargedanddrybatteriesshouldbeactivatedasdescribedinChapter5ofthismanual.

Observethetransportsheetsforthebatteries.Theycontaininformationon:

■ dimensions,

■ weight,

■ liftingpoints,etc.

Additionalinformationonthedimensionsandweightscanbefoundon thebatterycase.

WARNING!

Useonlyloadhandlingdevicescomplyingwiththetechnicaland legalregulationsforthetransportofloads. Youcouldbeseriouslyinjuredorevenkilledbyfallingloads. Useonlysuitableloadhandlingdevices.

Shipment

Depotsorusingorganizationsmaymakeshipmentsofmotivepower batteriesinachargedandwetconditionifintendedforusewithinaperiodof90days.Thebatteryserviceweightisusuallystampedintothe steeltraynearoneoftheliftingholes.

Beforecratingawetbatteryforshipment,itshouldbegivenafresheningchargeasdescribedinChapter5ofthismanual.Atagshouldbe attachedtoboththebatteryandthecrateshowingthedateofthelast chargeandthespecificgravityoftheelectrolyteatthecompletionofthe charge.

Makecertainthatthebatteryisproperlyprotectedwhencrated.

Thereceivingorganizationshouldbealertedtotheneedforafresheningchargebeforethebatteryisputintoservice.

Depotswillnormallymakedomesticandexportshipmentsofnewbatterieswhichusuallywillbeinachargedanddrycondition.Batteries, andtheaccompanyingelectrolyteinseparatecarboys,whichareintendedforexportshipmentmustbepackagedinaccordancewithapprovedmethods.

NOTICE!

Wheneverbatteriesareshippedbycommoncarrier,ICCregulationsapply.

Unpackinguponreceipt

Uponreceiptofaminepowerstoragebattery,performthefollowing:

 Itisimportantfirsttoexaminetheexteriorofthepackingforwet spotsonbottomorsideswhichmayindicateleakingjars.Inspect alsoforphysicaldamagetobatterypackagebecausethebattery couldbeaffectedaswell.Reportanydamagetoyoursupervisor.

 Makecertainthatthepackageisrightsideup,withskidmounts restingfirmlyonfloor.

 Useaforklifttruckorcraneofsufficientcapacitytoremovethe packagedbatteryfromthetruckorfreightcar.Ifacraneisemployed,besuretheslingissecuredagainstthebottomoftheskid andnotaroundtheskidmounts.

WARNING!

Liftingdevicesusedtomovebatteriesmustbecapableofcarryingtheweightstampedonthebatterycase.Keepallpersonsand bodypartsfromunderthebatterieswhentheyarelifted.

 Movethecratedbatterytotheuncratingareaandremovepackaging,includinganywrappingorotherprotectionprovidedtothebatteryterminalcableconnectors.

 Inspectbatteryandreportanydamagetoyoursupervisor.

 Useaproperlyinsulatedliftingbeamofadequatecapacitytoliftthe battery,bymeansofanoverheadhoist,fromthebatteryskid.

Whenliftingbatteries,alwaysuseadevicewhichexertsaverticalpull ontheliftingeyeortab.Ifachainmustbeused,itshouldbeincombinationwithaliftingbeamwithprovisionforadjustingliftinghookcenterstotheexactlengthofthetray.Anymethodofliftingwhichtendsto squeezeorstretchthebatterytraymaydistortitandcoulddamagejars ordisturbcellseals.

Apieceofrubbersheetorotherinsulatingmaterial,temporarilylaidon thebatterywhilelifting,willpreventanypossibleshortcircuitsfrom chainsorhooks.Asanadditionalprecautionagainstaccidentalshorting,theliftingbeamhooksshouldbeelectricallyinsulatedfromeach other.
