CLAAS BOMINATOR 68 S

INTRODUCTION

The DOMINATOR 68 S belongs to the wide range of combine harvesters manufactured by the CLAAS OHG. This manual is intended to give the machine driver information on setting, using and servicing the combine.

Text and pictures in this manual are general, except where specified by reference to a particular version.

Operation and maintenance of important auxiliary equipment is also covered by this manual. Please read the instructions which apply to the appropriate auxiliary equipment on your combine.

Provided you follow the advice on the care and servicing of your machine you will be rewarded with reliable and long service from your combine harvester.

We recommend that you allow your authorized CLAAS dealer to carry out the regularmaintenance. Omissions of parts of the maintenance schedule or incorrect operation lead to a drop in performance and cost valuable time. By correct servicing and operation you can make full use of our sound experience and of the latest technical knowledge in combine harvesting with which your combine has been designed and thereby insure reliability of your combine harvester.

Identification plate The identification plate is located on the right hand side of the operator's platform (Fig. 1).

Combine serial number The combineserial number is stamped on the Gombine frame underneath the operator's platformon the right hand side of the machine (Fig. 2).

SERIAL NUMBERS OF AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT Cutterbars The serial number of the cutterbar is stamped on the left hand end of the cutterbar below the knive drive casing.

Maize picker head The identification plate with the picker serial number is attached to the right hand end of the picker cross plate.

Straw chopper The chopper serial number is stamped on the I. h. chopper side plate (Fig. 7).

Cab The cab serial number is located on the left hand side frame at the top towards the rear (Fig. 8).

Cutterbar trailer The trailer serial number is stamped in the r. h. side of the main tube towards the front. The identification plate is located at the same place (Fig. 9).

DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION OF THE COMBINE

The kerneis separated by the straw walkers are returned to the sieve pan via the under-walker pockets.

Cutterbar

A crankshaft with raked tines provides intensive agitation of straw on the walkers.

Dividers separate the standing grain from the grain which is to be cut.

Grain lifters lift lodged crops and avoid cutting losses in crops with hanging heads.

The reel moves the cut crop to the main table auger. The auger flights move the material to the cutterbar center where the feed rake delivers it to the drum for threshing.

The stone trap collects solid objects brought up by the feed rake thus preventing damage to the threshing parts.

Threshing parts

Threshing is performed by drum and concave. The bulk of grain tögether with chaff and broken straw passes through the concave onto the preparing floor of the sieve pan. The impeller delivers the straw and remainder of grain to the straw walkers. A deflector curtain behind the impeller holds back bouncing grains and deflects the kerneis down onto the front of the straw walkers.

Cleaning

Grain mixed with chaff and broken straw is fluffed by means of the shaking action of the preparationfloor and at the same time moved onto the sieves.

The wind blast of the cleaning fan blows the light particles of chaff to the rear, out of the machine. The grain falls through the upper sieve and lower sieves into the clean grain auger trough and is lifted by the clean grain elevator into the grain tank. Shaking action of upper sieve is opposed to shaking action of lower sieve.

All parts heavier than chaff and bigger than grain, travel c;>ver the upper sieve and lower sieve, drop into the returns auger and are moved to the returns elevator.

The elevator carries the returns to the drum for further threshing. Swinging the grain tank unloading tube into operating position allows the grain tank to be quickly emptied into a truck ortrailer alongside the combine.

Disawning

Straw walkers

The straw walkers separate the remainder of grain from the straw. The straw is either removed out of the combine through the rear hood or undergoes further processing by special attachments (e. g. straw chopper).

When combining grain which is unusually hard to disawn or when combining crops which are hard to thresh from the heads, additional disawning plates can be engaged. The disawning plates are fitted underneath the concave.

CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE COMBINING

1. Wait until the crop has fully ripened - do not combine beforehand! (Higher yield, less moisture content and easier threshing are result.)

2. Where the heads are bent, install grain lifters close together. Where the crop is lodged, install grain lifters farther apart (on every fourth to sixth cutterbar finger).

3. Where straw and grain are briUle, set the threshing concave wider and reduce the threshing drum speed. Too much short straw impedes the cleaning process. Cracked grain lowers the quality.

4. Where the straw is long, damp and tough, narrow the threshing concave clearance and increase the threshing drum speed.

5. Under damp conditions and where badly ~odged crops are also grown through with greenstuff, clean the threshing concave, straw walkers and sieves regularly.

6. Remember that the vital part of the cleaning process is the blast of the fan. Prevent the forming of »mats« on the sieves and unnecessary grain losses by using enough wind, adjusting the frogmouth sieve correctly and using a flat sieve of sufficient hole size.

7. Engage the additional disawning plates when the awns are hard to remove. The disawning plates are fitted underneath the concave.

8. To get the best results from your combine run it at the right speed. Therefore, check the speed on the straw wal ker shaft before the harvest. Correct speed is 220 _51Imin (rpm).

9. Regular cleaning of the air cleaner as weil as clean fuel and regular oil changes are essential for high performance and long life of the engine.

DOMINATOR 68 S PRIOR-TO-OPERATION CHECK LIST: 1. Check oil level in engine (also refer to Lubricants Chart).

2. Check air cleaner for cleanliness and filter element for correct fit (red warning light).

Especiallywhen the air cleanerintake screen had been· removed, check to makesure that there is no water inside the air cleaner housing. If this is negleeted damage to theengine will be the result.

3. Check coolant level in radiator.

4. Inspect battery and checklevelofelectrolyte and ensureacid is at required concentration.

5. Check fuellevel in fuel tank,ifnecessarybleed fuel system (depending onenginetype).

6. Check oil level in transmission case.

7. Check oillevel in final drive gearboxes.

8. Check oil level in hydraulic system.

To avoid damage to the hydraulic system, let cold hydraulic oil warm up by running the engine for about 5 minutes at slow idle speed.

9. Check brakes for proper function and check level of brake fluid.

10. Check ground drive clutch for proper function and check the clutch setting. Check that the clutch controllinkage is working freely.

11. Checkthat V-belts andchains are ingood conditionand correctly tightened. The tension of new belts without automatie tensioners must be checked after the first two to three working hours and retensioned as necessary.

16. Before refitting the variable speed belts, clean the inner surface of all variable speed pulleys thoroughly.

17. Remove the grease from all slip clutches (reei, main tableauger and upper feed rake shaft).

18. Check wheel nuts and wheel bolts for tight fit (please referto »Specifications« for torque settings).

Checktyres for proper inflation and correct as necessary in· accordance \lvith information given in the group »Specifications«.

19. Toavoid fire hazards, thoroughly clean the engine compartment and especially the exhaust system.

Thebrakes, gearbox,transmissions, and their adjacent areasmust also be thoroughly cleaned.

Whencombiningextremedry material and in severe dustconditions,these areas must be checked at shorter intervals and collected dirt, dust and trashcleaned off asnecessary.

20. Replace cooling water hoses and air intake hoses by new ones.

21. Closethegrain tank lidwhen movingthe combine on the road to prevent damage to the lid by low clearance objects.

22. Put the compressor-type air conditioner into operation as described in group »Maintenance«.

Lubricate machine in accordance with the Lubrication Chart.

Make sure all parts are working properly before starting any seasonal harvesting operations.

When installing a new V-belt, apply liquid Teflon spray to the inner face of the belt guides of beltoperated clutches.

12. Check all V-belt clutches for correct operation, for clear disengagement of drive between belt and pulleys. This is obtained only by correct adjustment of belt guides and jockey pulley.

13. Check adjustment of cutterbar floatation springs and correct their adjustment if necessary. See group »Basic setting and threshing« for information regarding adjustment of floatation springs.

14. Check all nuts and bolts for tight fit and retighten them if necessary. Give particular attention to all nuts on the chassis, wheels and steering mechanism. Check that all spring clips, safety pins, cotter or split pins and any securing pins are in place.

Check all gib-head keys for tight fit.

15. Make sure that the bearings of the straw walkers tines do not bind on the crankshafts.

The fan can be set to any pf three positions by means of 3-position switch (4). An evaporator is installed in front of the fresh air double fan.

Putting the air conditioner into operation: Adjust both service valves to their fully open (backseated) position and tighten them in that position so that the valve seating faces will seal off properly toward the outside. Then check the filling ports and fittings on the compressor for leaks.

Install the in-line fuse, (see group »Maintenance«).

CAUTION: Under no circumstances must the in-line fuse for the air conditioner system be installed with the valveson the compressor closed.

On machines with cab heater open the bypass flap by moving lever (1) to »down« position.

Start the Diesel engine. Set the double fan to the desired position 1 - 3, using switch (4). Turn the air conditioner thermostatic switch (5) in clockwise direction in order to preset the desired temperature.

The air conditioner is now turned on.

Through the recirculating air grille (6), previously cooled inside air is drawn from the cab and mixed with filtered outside air. The blend is further cooled and pushed through louvres (8) and (7) into the cab.

The adjustable air louvres (8) and (7) allow the operator to control the direction of air flow. Air louvres (7) can be closed, if required.

As the temperature reaches the desired low point, a thermostat switch in conjunction with an electromagnetic clutch disengages the compressor. The compressor is automatically engaged as the temperature rises.

The compressor-type air conditioner can only work weil if the door and the windows are closed.

Regularly clean the filters in the which are located in the roof of the cab, see group »Maintenance«.

After changing the speed of the threshing drum, block the drum speed gate by turning lock (Y) in order to prevent accidental variation of drum speed.

Before moving the combine on the road, raise the cutterbar or feeder housing until the pointer of indicator (A) is at mark (M), and then block the cutterbar gate (1 and 2) with lock (X).

DRIVING THE COMBINE

Cold weather starting aid Perking 6.3544 Perkins 4.248 (not for all countries) Excess fuel from the injector nozzles flows through leakage line (L), enters the reservoir (8) and is discharged through connector (1) into the fuel return line leading to the fuel tank. This way there is always a sufficient supply of fuel in the reservoir (B).

Before starting the engine from cold, hold the key for about 15 seconds in position 2 (also see Fig. 3). This opens an electrically operated valve and at the same time heats an igniter coil. The valve/heater coil unitM is located in the induction manifold end.

As the valve is opened, fuel from the reservoir enters the heater unit, ignites as it reaches the igniter coil and then continues to burn. Thus the inlet air is heated.

When the engine is now being started, the heated air is drawn in first which eases starting.

Starting the engine Move throttle lever (G) to the slow speed position (L).

Turn the ignition key until resistance is feit, depress the key and turn the key further. After the engine has fired, let it run at slow idling speed for a short time.

The engine must not be run at full speed as long as the oil pressure light is on and the buzzer sounds.

During field operations the throttle lever must be in the full speed position M. (Fig.18)

Possibly use winter fuel.

Transmission of power The traction drive power comes from the engine by way of the intermediate drive to the variable speed pulley on the left hand side of the machine.

The V-belt operated speed pulleys give infinitely variable speed in all transmission gears.

A dry single-disc clutch is located between the speed variator and the transmission. The transmission has three forward and one reverse gear.

The drive is transmitted from transmission and differential via drive shafts and final drive reduction gears to the traction wheels (Fig. 19).

Drive carefully on public roads and when turning: sharp turns make the combine swing wide!

The steering continues to function even with the engine stopped.

Brakes Foot brake: The foot brakes are designed to work independently when the pedal lock is removed to facilitate turning sharp corners.

CAUTION, use brakes carefully on hilly ground! lock the brake pedals together for driving on publie roads and check brakes for equal effectiveness on both the drive wheels (Fig. 22).

Regularly check if brakes are effective and especially check the condition of the brake linings at regular intervals. (Refer also to the advise given in the section SAFETY RULES).

If brakes get less effective, they must only be readjusted byan authorized workshop.

Handbrake: Brake action of handbrake (H) is independent of foot brake action. The handbrake must be effective with the handle locked in the first 3 to 4 teethin the segment. For reasons of safe operating conditions make sure that the ratchet will always lock securely in the segment, even afterthe machine has been in use for aprolonged period of time (Fig. 24).

IMPORTANT: Foot and hand brakes must work effectively.

Stopping the engine Move throttle lever (G) to the slow idling speed position (L), disengage the thresher and push the throttle lever to the position (A). Withdraw the ignition key (Fig. 25).

Functions monitor The early warning system monitors the speed of rotation of the upper feed rake shaft, clean grain and returns elevators, straw walker shafts and of the straw chopper.

It also monitors the air cleaner and the engine oil pressure.

The appropriate red indicator light in the combined instrument gauge lights up and a buzzer sounds when shaft speed slows down, when the air cleaner is restricted and requires cleaning and when the engine oil pressure is too low. The buzzer (8) goes on and off intermittently and is located on the right hand side of the driver's seat (Fig 26).

The shaft speed-Ioss monitors are switched on and off by means of a switch that is activated by the cutterbar drive control mechanism (Fig. 26 and 27).

Wheelchock At least one wheel chock must be carried along on the combine at all times.

The bracket with the wheel chock is located behind the sheet metal covering on the left hand side of the machine (Fig. 28).

Rear axle adjustment (where fitted) Securely support the machine at the rear.

- Remove the r.h. ball joint of the track rod.

- Remove steering cylinder mounting bracket (B) from the combine axle center section.

- Loosen clamping bolts (K), both sides.

- Remove mounting bolts (S), both sides.

- .Slide the adjustable axle sections in or out to obtain the desired track width (2300 mm, 2500 mm, 2700 mm).

Install mounting bolts (S). 00 not tighten the mounting bolts at this time.

- Tighten clamping bolts (K) first, then tighten mounting bolt(S).

- Bolt mounting bracket (B) to the corresponding tapped holes.

- Set the wheels to ZERO toe-in by adjusting the r.h. ball joint on the track rod. In order to obtain accurate measurements, measure from the inside edges of the rim, where the beading of the tyres rests. 00 not measure from the outside edges of the rims. Secure the track rod. Use a new self-Iocking nut.

CUTTERBAR Dividers The three-sectional divider consists of the divider (A), the adjustable short inner deflector (8) and the long outer deflector (C). The divider is attached to the cutterbar by a quick release device, and is available in a short version (for short strawed crops) and a long version.

Position the divider close to the ree!.

Adjust the divider in height by means of the slide (S) to prevent the divider point from dragging on the ground or digging in on undulating ground.

Outer deflector The purpose of the outer deflector (C) is to push the leaning crop back into the field. Sidelong and height adjustment is made with the telescopic tube after loosening the thumb screws (5 and 6).

Inner deflector The inner deflector forces the crop towards the center of the cutterbar and prevents it from wrapping around the reel shaft. Attach the inner deflector so that the reel passes by closely without hitting.

Grain lifters The number of grain Iifters to be fitted depends on the condition of the crop. In down and weedy crops fit a Iifter on every fourth to sixth knife finger, and in short strawed standing crops with the heads hanging down, fit lifters closer together.

Slacken the nut (1). Slide the Iifter between the washer and the upper nut, at the same time placing the lifter opening (2) over the finger tip, then retighten the nut securely.

Knife Removing the knife: Set the knife to the I.h. end of its stroke. Undo the hex. bolts (N) and remove the knife.

'Installing the knife: Slide the knife into the finger bar. Secure the knife with hex. bolts (N). To ensure correct fitting of dowel (M), the recess must be perfectly clean (Fig. ~).

WARNING: When removing and fitting the knife - beware of accident -. Be especially careful while removing the knife when the finger bar, knife and fingers are misaligned and covered with dirt.

Adjusting the height of the knife: Afer slackening clamping screw (K), adjust drive arm (G) so that a clearance of 0.5 to 1 mm is obtained between the first sections of the knife and the flats of the double fingers on which the sections run.

Securely tighten the clamping screw after the drive arm has been adjusted (Fig. 5).

Adjusting the knife keeps: Adjust the knife keeps by fitting or removing shims. The keeps should be adjusted so that the knife operates smoothly. There should be about 1.5 mm play between the knife keep and knife section (Fig. 6).

The spare knife is secured in position when the hinged side panel (0) is closed (Fig. 7).

Knife drive Adjusting the spring-loaded cylinder: Loosen lock nut (3) and adjust cylinder tube (4) until a spring length (X) of 100 mm in obtained after the lock nut has been tightened (Fig. 8).

Cutterbar skids To suit normal harvesting conditions the adjustable cutterbar skids Mare bolted to the center hole.

In difficult ground- and harvesting conditions (e. g. badly laid crops) the cutterbar skids can be adjusted to a higher position (Fig. 9).

Reel Reel height is adjustable fromthe operator's platform by means of the hydraulic control unit. Lower the reel in downed crops and raise it in standing crops.

If, with the reel in deepest position, the reel tines come in touch with the cutterbar knife, readjust setting of eyebolts (8). See Fig. 10.

After dismantling or disconnecting any parts of the reel hydraulic system, the system must be bled (see group »Maintenance«).

Variable reel speed The reel speed can be variably adjusted to the ground speed. The speed of the reel should be somewhat faster than the ground speed. Excessive reel speed will cause losses when combining delicate crops that shedeasily, and too slow a reel speed leaves the crop bunching up on the cutterbar.

The intermediate roller drive chain can be retensioned with adjusting bolt (8). 00 not overtension the chain.

Main table auger Basic setting of auger is with a gap of approx. 15 mm between auger flights (8) and bottom of cutterbar through.

When thick swaths have to be picked up the main table auger should be raised to avoid overloading of the auger. When the crop is bukly, raise the main table auger to reduce the amount of brocken straw.

The auger flights (8) move the material to the cutterbar center where the retractable fingers (F) feed the crop under the auger to the feeder housing. Oamaged fingers should immediately be replaced by new ones (Fig. 21).

Feeder housing Chains (K) with serrated slats (E) move the crop to the threshing parts.

The feed rake chains can be tensioned with tensioner nuts (8) after having slackened clamping boUs (A) and lock nuts (C). The chains must be evenly tensioned and only to such an extent on both sides that the feed rake slats do not scrape the feeder housing floor.

Inspection doors (P) on the feeder housing allow easy checking of the chain tension without the necessity to remove the cutterbar.

Cutterbar reverse drive By pressing the button on the operator's platform, the feed rake, table auger and reel run in reverse. The crop is ejected to the front in order to remove blockages.

The electricmotor (E) is directly poweredbythe battery.

The small pinion on the motor drivesa large gear on the cutterbar intermediate drive shaft 0fV). Shaft rotation is thus reversed.

Just operate the electric motor briefly, sufficient only to clear blockages, and never longer than 2 seconds.

The starter cable for the reverser runs to the push button switch at the front of the instrument console, via a relay and a switch on the cutterbar engagement/disengagement mechanism. This is to assure that the reverser can onlybe engaged when the engine is running and when the cutterbar drive.is shut off.

CAUTION: Before engaging the reverser unit, all movement of the feed rake and cutterbar drive mechanisms must have stopped.

Adjusting the cutterbar floatation springs

Lower the cutterbar so that it is approx. 100 mm off the ground. Use Allen head screws (8) and.pre-Ioad floatation springs (E) to give a 5 mm clearance between the cylinder plates (A) and the castellated nuts of studs (8). Check the cylinder suspension elements for easy movement. After pushing down the cutterbar, it must bounce up again. If necessary check the pivot points of the cutterbar for free movement.

There must be a clearance of approx. 5 mm between the cylinder plates (A) and the castellated nuts of studs (8).

Clean the stone trap daily. When working in fields which are stony and when threshing lodged grain, the stone trap should be cleaned at shorter intervals.

Raise the cutterbar to maximum height, unlock cover (I<) by twisting the locking pins (R) and take out the cover to the front. This gives free access to the stone trap and the foreign objects can be easily removed (Fig. 49).

Engaging the threshing mechanism The threshing mechanism power band is engaged by idler pulley. Power is transmitted from the engine output pulley to the threshing mechanism.

IMPORTANT: Engage or disengage the threshing mechanism with the engine idling. Movethe lever sharply forward or rearward.

Then the separation through the concave is lessened, the straw walkers are overloaded, the drum gets unbalanced and the sieves are unevenly fed.

To ensure trouble-free operation of the combine, it is essential to check these parts regularly for dirt.

The rasp bars should be kept equally clean to prevent the drum becoming unbalanced. Large inspection holes (N) facilitate checking and cleaning, once the doors have been removed (Fig. 55).

Drum variable speed pulleys

On-the-go variation of drum speed combined with concave adjustments which can be carried out from the platform, allow quick changes ofthreshing operations in order to match crop conditions. Damp long-strawed crops as weil as crops difficult to thresh and disawn require faster drum speeds than dry and brittle crops.

Stick a suitable and sufficiently long lever (F) (flat bar, a pipe or something like that) into the segment (L) provided for that purpose and turn the drum in the opposite direction of rotation. Both the mixture of chaff-grain-broken straw from the concave and that from the straw walkers pour onto the preparing floor (1). The mixture is fluffed and evenly fed to the upper sieve (3) through the shaking action of the sieve pan.

Whenever the preparation floor becomes caked with dirt, uneven flow of the crop to the sieves results, which not only causes overloading of the sieves but also results in grain losses.

Keep preparation floor always clean.

The bulk of grain, when leaving the preparation floor, falls through the wire rake (2) onto the frogmouth sieve whereas coarse and heavier particles are retained somewhat Ionger. Build-up of material on the wire rake is caused by bent tines which must be straightened.

Adjusting the frogmouth sieves The frogmouth sieves can be adjusted with levers (5, 6 and 7) to suit all sizes of grain.

Lever (5) is used to adjust the upper frogmouth sieve over its fulilength, including the integrated extension (4).

Lever (6) only adjusts the integrated frogmouth sieve extension (4). Always adjust the integrated frogmouth sieve extension (4) wider open than frogmouth sieve (3).

The setting is correct if the grain is screened out after passing over three quarters of the sieving area.

The integrated frogmouth sieve extension (4) is to be adjusted for all crops to give a gap wide enough to allow unthreshed material to drop and join the tailings.

Coarse particles (e. g. unthreshed material) fall from the upper sieve and from the end of lower sieve into the returns auger which moves the material to the returns elevator. The elevator carries the returns to the drum for second threshing.

Excessive returns lower the efficiency of the combine and causes grain crackage and grain losses. In most cases excessive returns occur when the wind blast is not strong enough or when the sieves are not opened wide enough (Fig. 80).

Elevators Sweepelevators move up the material in the lower and, respectively, front half of the housings. Rubber paddles are used for elevating the material.

To check the chain tension, open the boot doors (L and N) of the clean grain and the returns elevators.

In the event ofplugging, open the auger flaps as weil as the elevator boot doors (L and N).

Before clearing a blockage, always stop the engine and wait until all mechanisms have stopped rotating.

Then remove that part of grain that can be reached by hand.

Thereafter allow the machine to clear all material by gradually engaging the threshing mechanism. Always ensure that the flaps and doors are properly refitted and tightly closed (Fig. 84).

The grain tank filler auger drive chain is located under box (E). Liberally oil the chain once a year with transmission oil after removing box (E). See Fig. 85.

Returns elevator: To check the tension of the returns elevator chain open door (0) on the elevator head. Loosen clamping bolts (B), on each side. Release the block tightener to slacken chain (I<) which drives the returns delivery auger. Tighten the returns elevator chain with adjusting screw (8). See Fig.86.

Tighten the elevator chains to such an extent as toprevent the rubber paddles from rubbing the elevator housings.

Overtension causes premature wear to chains and sprockets.

In case of damp material or when starting to work in another field (especially in the case of certified seeds) the elevator heads should be cleaned through service doors (0).

Tightly close the service doors each time they have been opened (Fig. 85 and 86).

DOMINATOR 68 S GRAIN TANK Filling the grain tank: The grain is carried up into the tank by way of the clean grain elevator and filler auger (Z).

The filler auger reaches to the middle of the tank, provides full and even filling of the tank and allows the tank to be filled to maximum capacity.

Safety screen (G) must always be in place when the combine is operated. This is essential in orderto prevent accidents (Fig. 87).

Unloading the tank: The sloping grain tank boUom panels allow the grain to flow down to the horizontal cross auger (E). The grain is moved by the cross auger to the left (as arrowed) to the unloading tube auger, which then carries the grain into the transport vehicle.

Plates (8) are tapered to provide a wider feed gap to the cross auger on the I. h. side than on the r. h. side. This keeps quickly flowing seeds from building up inside the unloading augers.

When combining poorly flowing seeds (e. g. grass seed or similar crops) remove one or both the plates as necessary (Fig. 87).

Hydraulic unloading auger swing (3200 Iitre-grain tank) Byoperating hydraulic cylinder (A) the grain tank unloading auger is moved to unloading position and back to transport position.

The valves inside the lock-up valve unit (C) prevent leakback of oil from the hydraulic cylinder and hold the unloading auger stationary.

The auger inside the tube is driven by way of universal drive shaft (W). The shaft is fitted on the outside of the tube (Fig. 88).

Engaging the grain tank unloading system The grain tank unloading system is controlled with lever (K). Push the lever down in direction (E) to engage the drive to the grain tank unloadingaugers. Pull the lever up in direction (A) to disengage the drive. Press down the ball knob and always shift the lever all the wayto the disengaged or engaged position. Be sure the lever is properly locked in the respective position.

CAUTION: Only engage the grain tank unloading augers with the unloading tube swung out.

Safety feature: The grain tank drive is blocked by means of cam bracket (B) and lever (H) when the unloading auger is in the transport position. This way the unloading system can not be engaged by mistake and damage is avoided.

When the unloading auger is in the operating position with the unloader drive engaged, hydraulic controllever (H, Fig. 89) is locked. This way the unloader auger can not be swung back to transport postion by mistake (Fig.

For threshing rice, replace normal type threshing parts by spike drum and spike concave. The number of spike sets to be fitted to the drum varies with working conditions.

Possibly use rice cutterbar.

Combining seeds from racks or stooks encounters no difficulties. For detailedmachine setting consult special instructions for beet seed combining.

Beans

Sunflowers

The risk of beans cracking is reduced by using a slower drum speed. The clearance ofthe concave to the drum is to be set wide open. To obtain a higher output when a large acreage of beans has to be threshed, fit concave type of wider openings. Adjust frogmouth sieves wide open and, ifnecessary,.use aspecial sieve of wide hole size in the lower position (see Sieve Chart).lJse full blast of cleanning fan.

This crop usually threshes easily. lJse a drum speed of 650 ta 800 1/min (rpm). Adjust concave wide open. Use strong blast of cleaning fan and probably a 16 mm round hole sieve. The CLAAS-sunflower cutterbar minimizes pick-up losses.

Peas Basiccombine setting as for beans, possibly use of 18 mm round hole sieve - depressed - in lower position.

Soybeans Soy bean combining requires low drum speed and possibly use of spiked threshing equipment with as few spikes as possible fitted to the concave. Other combine settings are as for beans. Possibly use soy bean cutterbar.

Grassseeds Grass seeds differ in easily and difficulty threshable varieties. For further details consult the. Grass Seed Combining Manual.

Corn-cob mix equipment To produce corn-cob mix, use special sieves in the upper position. Remove the lower sieve. Use a cover plate to prevent any material from getting to the returns auger. The concave is to be replacecd by a special concave (Fig. 100).

Straw walker fishbacks Straw walker fishbacks may be fitted to the straw walkers to fluff up the straw more effectively. The fishbacksare especially useful in wet and heavy straw conditions (Fig. 101).

Cutterbar trailer The cutterbar trailer has been designed for carrying wide cutterbars. The trailer is towed behind the combine.

ClAAS straw chopper With the mounted straw chopper the straw is chopped and immediately spread over the whole cutting width of the combine.The field is ready for ploughing with no extra pass required. If the straw chopper is not to be used, it needs not be removed from the machine. The chopper can easily be changed from chopping position to out-of-work position (Fig. 104).

Combine performance monitor The electronic performance monitor allows the operator to make full use of the capacity of the combine. As the instrument on the operator's platform indicates changes in threshing losses of grain, the operator can always drive at optimum working speed as long as grain losses do not exceed the acceptable level (Fig. 105).

Functions monitor Magnetic pick-ups are used to monitor the speed of the upper feeder housing shaft, the clean grain elevator, the returns elevator, the straw walker shaft and the straw chopper. Hydraulic fore and aft reel adjustment By way of two double-acting hydraulic cylinders, the reel can be adjusted fore and aft from the operator's platform by operating a hydraulic control valve. With hydraulic reel height control and hydraulic fore and aft reel adjustment, the reel can easily be positioned to match field conditions (Fig. 107).

Cutterbar reverse drive After pressing a button on the operator's platform, the feed rake, table auger and reel run in reverse. The material is ejected to the front and blockages in the feeder housing and at the cutterbar can easily be cleared (Fig. 108).

Fan shutters for combining grass seed and other special crops When combining particularly light seeds, the blast from the fan may still be excessive in spite of the fact that the fan is running at minimum speed. In these cases the air blast can be further reduced by inserting shutters (H) in the apertures to the cleaning fan. The fan shutters must be installed on each side of the cleaning fan. By turning the shutters, the wind volume can additionally be decreased or increased as required (Fig. 115).

Siow speed threshing drum drive kit An optional chain drive kit for threshing seeds that crack easily can be installed in place of the drum variable speed drive.

Maintenance

Bolts

Chains

Check bolts for tight fit and retighten them as necessary. Give particular attention to all nuts and bolts on the chassis, wheels and steering mechanism.

Externalsteel roller chains have to be oiled daily with transmission oi!. After completing the harvest, all chains with the exception of elevator chains and feed rake have to be removed, cleaned with Diesel fuel, dipped in hot chain·grease and refitted. When closing the chain locks be sure that the closed end of the locks point to the direction of chain travel.

Check torque settings of wheel nuts and bolts at intervals stated in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE and tighten as necessary (see group'»Specifications« for recommended torque settings). Check that all spring clips, safety pins, cotter pins and other securing pins are in place.

Correct tension of steel roller chains

Unbalance

Find the center point on the slack side of the chain between sprockets. With the tight side of the chain slightly under load, push in the center point of the slack side with the thumb. The tension of the chain is correct when its slack side deflects about 2 % of the center distance between shafts. When new chains are fitted the tension should be checked at shorter intervals.

Uneven running of combine results in fatigue of material and breakage. At regular intervals check revolving machine parts, particularly the threshing drum, for dust accumulations and clean thoroughly.

Example: If the distance between the centers of the shafts is 500 mm (19 11/16 in), the slack side of the chain should deflect about 10 mm (13/32 in).

If a chain has excessively lengthened, shorten the chain by removing one double link.

Belts All V-belts should always be kept under proper tension. Oiled belts can be cleaned with a soapy solution; never use gasoline or similar products for belt cleaning.

When installing a new V-belt, apply liquid Teflon to the inner face of the belt guides of belt-operated clutches.

Variable speed pulleys Whenever the variable speed pulleyshave been greased, operate the pulleys to ensure even spreading of grease on sliding parts. Remove any accumulations of dust from between the variable speed pulley halves to make sure the pulleys can be run through their full speed range.

Tyre pressure Tyres should be kept at correct pressures (see »Specifications«).

Engine Check hoses of cooling and air intake system for deterioration and check hose connections for tightness. If hoses and clamps are not in perfect condition, it is imperative to replace them by new ones.

lubrication The oil in the engine, hydraulic systems and transmissions must be changed at the specified intervals. Use only the recommended types of oil. Lubricate the machine only with good quality grease and good quality oil, respectively. Clean dirt from the grease nipples before greasing. There are three pairs of grease nipples on the springloaded pulley of the threshing drum variable speed drive and on the spring-loaded pulley of the variable ground drive assembly. When carrying out the lubrication service, only one pair of grease nipples, that can be got at easily, needs to be greased at the specified lubrication interval.

Hydraulic oil change To change the hydraulic oil of the lift hydraulic system, steering wheel (1) has to be turned. This operates the steering unit (2) which pumps the oil out of the hydraulic tank (3).

Retract all hydraulic pistons. 8top the engine.

Unscrew one hydraulic hose (4 R or 4 L) from steering cylinder (5) and put it in a sufficiently large container (8).

Turn the steering wheel in the appropriate direction until all the oil is pumped out ofthe system through the emergency steering line (6).

After refilling the hydraulic tank, the steering hydraulic system must be bled.

(Fig. 1 and 2) Cleaning oil screen filter (1): Unscrew return line (A). Remove filter (F). Remove circlip (8) from filter support (2).

Wash screen (1) in gasoline/petrol normally used for cleaning purposes and blow out with compressed air.

Always replace the screen and seals with new ones if damaged.

Bleeding the hydraulic steering system The hydraulic lines must be bled after any repair on the hydraulic steering system and/or its lines. The engine ~hould be running .. Two persons are required to carry out the job: 1. Securely block up the combine under the centre of the rear axle to take weight off the rear wheels. Put a clean container under the hydraulic steering cylinder to accomodate the hydraulic oi!.

2. Turn the steering wheelto the left hand lock.

Disconnect hydraulic hose (R) at the steering cylinder. Turn the steering wheelto the right until bubble-free oil comes out of the hydraulic hose.

Reconnect the hydraulic hose. Turn the steering wheel further to the right hand lock.

3. Disconnect hydraulic hose (L) at thesteering cylinder. Turn the steering wheel to the leftuntil bubble-free oil comes out of the hydraulic hose.

Reconnect the hydraulic hose (Fig. 4).

NOTE: During the bleeding process the level 01 the oil in the tank should be checked. Add oilas required.

Bleeding the reel cylinders The reel cylinders must be bled each time the cylinders and/or the feed lines have been repaired or disconnected. a) Operate the hydraulic control unit to raise the reel and push the reel by hand, if necessary, to full height. b) Loosenbleed screw (A) on cylinder without removing it. c) Maintain the control unit lever in the »raise reel« position. When bubble-free oil flows out, tighten again bleed screw (A). Then raise and lower the reel several times.

d) Check reel cylinders for synchronized operation which is obtained by repeating the bleeding operation.

(Fig.5) When no oil at all has been left in the reel cylinders, carry out the first bleeding operation with the reel removed from the machine. Failure to do so could result in damage to the reel.

DOMINATOR 68 S CLUTCHPEDALADJUSTMENT Adjust clutch rods (A and B) so that a distance (X) of 69 mm is obtained between reinforcing bracket (H) and pivot pin (G). Total clutch release movement should be 20 ± 1 mm, measured at the lower clutch control linkage (8). Adjust at linkage (A).

7 to 11 mm ofthe total clutch release movement should be for free travel. There should be an effective clutch release movement of 10 to 12 mm. Adjust at Iinkage (8).

CHANGING VARIABLE SPEED BELTS

Danger! Risk of accident! Be careful to avoid personal injury when working on variable speed pulleys. Never pass hands between pulley halves!

Drum and ground drive variable speed belts With the engine running and threshing mechanism engaged operate the variable speed pulleys hydraulically to the full speed position. The hydraulically operated pulley halves (1) are now moved together, the spring-loaded pulley halves (2) are now moved apart.

Disengage the threshing mechanism. Stop the engine.

Unscrew protective cap (3).

At the ground drive variable speed pulley remove guard (1<).

The fully loaded spring (F) can be retained in the compressed position with a flat iron bar (E), 36 x 12 x 250 mm (1 7/16 x 1/2 X 9 7/ 8 in), and two hex. bolts (8), M 12 x 80 DIN 931-8.8 with nuts.

With the engine still stopped, move the hydraulic control lever to the »slow speed« position and at the same time push the hydraulic operated speed pulley halves apart.

The belt can now be withdrawn from both the pulleys.

Apply a film of grease or similar material to the faces of the variable speed pulleys to prevent corrosion.

Clean the pulley faces thoroughly before refitting the variable speed belt.

After fitting the belt, pull it hard down into the pulley halves and remove the flat iron bar (E).

After the belt has been refitted, remove bolt (8). Tighten the belt by operating the fan variator while the machine is running (Fig. 14).

DOMINATOR 68 S ADJUSTMENT OF GROUND DRIVE BELT Adjusting spring-loaded cylinder (F): Loosen lock nut (1). Adjust cylinder tube (2) so that spring (F)is slightly coil-bound. Then turn the cylinder tube 2 mm back. The spring must then have a length (Z) of approx. 92 mm.

Adjusting the belt guides: Adjust the guide so that there is 13 mm clearance (Y) between the belt and the belt guide along its fulliength.

Setting the ground drive variable speed pulleys: Distance(X) between the variable speed pulleys must be280~~ mm

Open the spring-loaded ground drive pulley with the use ofthe specialtool (see section CHANGING VARIABLE SPEED BELTS).

Slacken the bolts that secure the transmission housing.

Adjust the transmission housing up or down until measurement (X)has been obtained (provision for adjustment ±3mm). Retighten the bolts that secure the transmission housing.

Loosensupport plate (B). Push down the plateto locate tightly against the transmission neck at (H). Then tighten the bolts that secure the plate.

Remove the special too!.

Whenever the settings have been adjusted make a functional test, check for proper measurements and correct as required.

Where speed is Iimited to 20 km/h: The M 16 x 60 stop pin (A) is factory-set to limit the speed of the transmission input shaft to 2335 1Imin (rpm). The stop pin is locked in with special liquid securing compound (not affected by temperatures ranging from 51° C to + 120° Cl. (Fig.15)

THRESHING MECHANISM DRIVE ADJUSTMENT Adjusting spring-loaded cylinder (F): Loosen lock nut (1). Turn the hex. head (3) ofthe cylinder tube until the end of indicator rod (5) is in line with the end of the spring. Make the adjustment with the power band belt engaged (threshing mechanism controllever moved to position E). Also see detail drawing (H). With this setting a distance (X) of 20 mm must be obtained at the spring-loaded cylinder.

Adjusting spring-loaded return cylinder (8): With threshing mechanism drive disengaged (threshing mechanism controllever moved to position [A] and securely locked), loosenlock nut (6). Adjust cylinder tube (7) so that the connecting pin can easily be inserted at (8). The return cylinderlifts jockey pulley (R) right off the belt whenever the threshing mechanism drive is disengaged.

Adjusting the belt guides: Adjust the belt guides at the points (01 to 06) so that there is 5 mm clearance (Y) between the belt guides and the belt. The clearance must be obtained all the way around.

Whenever the settings have been adjusted, make a functional test, check for proper adjustments and correct as required (Fig. 16).

17 CUTTERBAR DRIVE ADJUSTMENT Spring-loaded cylinder (F) must only be fixed to the rear hole (H).

Adjusting spring-loaded cylinder (F): Loosen lock nut (1). Use a punch and adjust cylinder tube (2) untila distance (X) of 20 mm is obtained between stop washer (3) and sliding ring (4) when the lock nut (1) is tightened up.

Make all checks and adjustments with cutterbar drive engaged.

Adjusting the belt guides: Adjust the belt guides at the points (A, B, C and 0) so there is 5 to 7 mm clearance (y) between the belt guides and the belt, when the drive is engaged. The clearance must be obtained all the way around.

SPEED OF STRAW WALKER CRANKSHAFT The correct speed of the straw walker crankshaft is 220_ 5 1/min (rpm) and this speed should be maintained to get the best out of your machine. Check the speed with a hand tachometer at least before commencing harvest. The combine must be in the no-load condition with engine running at full speed (Fig. 21).

FUNCTIONS MONITOR Use a feeler gauge M and set the clearance between all the magnetic pick-ups and the gear wheels to 1 0.5 mm. Then tighten the nuts (K) to lock the magnetic pick-ups to their brackets (Fig. 22).

Cleanthe blocks, apply graphite lubricant as specified in the Lubricants Chart, and then reinstall the blocks.

(Fig.24) Before attempting to remove the bearing blocks, remove the cutterbar and securely support the front end of the feeder housing.

CAB Cleaning the filters Fold up cab roof (0), undo securing frame (K) and remove filters (F). Clean the air ducts in thecab roof.

If the filters are just clogged up with dust on the outside faces,clean the filters by tapping or using a vacuum cleaner or compressed air.

If the filters are thoroughlydirty, wash them in warm water - not over 40° C (104°F) - with a Iittle mild detergent, such as used for woolen clothing.

Replace filters if damaged (Fig. 25).

DOMINATOR 68 S COMPRESSOR-TYPE AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE DURING PROLONGED SHUT-DOWN CAUTION: It is of utmost importance that the protective caps on the service valve fittings (V) of the compressor are securely tightened.

1. Run the engine so that it gets warm and turn on the cab heater. The cab temperature must reach + 21 0 C (70 0 F).

If no cab heater is fitted, possibly use an electric heaterto raisethe cabtemperatureto + 21 0 C (70 0 F).

2. Operate the air conditioner system for five to ten minutes.

3. Shut off the air conditioner system and engine.

4. Close the compressor service valves (1 and 2).

5. Remove the in-line fuse (H) from the live wire that runs to the electro-magnetic clutch so that the compressor will not run together with the Diesel engine when the service valves are closed. Running the compressor with service valves closed will result in damage to the compressor.

The air conditioner system can now be left out of use for aperiod of six to nine months.

Putting the compressor-type air conditioner system into operation Completely open the service valves (1 and 2) and tighten them in that position so that the valve seating faces will seal off properly toward the outside. InstaU and securely tighten the protective caps. Then check the filling ports M and fittings for leaks. Install the in-line fuse (Fig. 28 and 29).

CAUTION: Under no circumstances must the in-line fuse for the air conditioner system be installed with the valves on the compressor closed.

Losses of grain may have different reasons. Therefore, always determine first where the losses occur.

Check combine for leakage losses. Check whether grain is lost where working parts join, especially check augertroughs, elevators etc. Extra care should be taken to check the working parts for good fitting when combining small seeds. Repair all leaks as necessary.

Losses that are caused by overripe crops or poor weather conditons must not be taken for combine losses.

WINTER STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMBINES

Follow the.instructions and suggestions on thispage to be sure your combine is ready to work when the next harvest season starts. Make all the checks and season services and have at the same time defective or worn parts repaired or replaced to avoid costly breakdowns during the next season.

1. Use Diesel fuel to wash grease and dust from all bearings.

2. Clean the combine thoroughly inside and out, particularly the threshing drum, the concave, the space behind the drum, the preparing floor, return floors, straw walkers and the space above the cleaning fan.

3. Using good quality grease, lubricate all grease points of the combine, taking care not to miss any ofthose wh ich require only annual attention (bearings with synthetic bushings). Run the combine for a short time to spread the grease evenly and until grease has slightly protruded from the bearings to from a seal. With the combine still running, operate the variable speed pulleys to have grease evenly spread on the sliding parts. Seal off the peripheries of all slip clutches with paintto keep moisture out and to prevent the forming of rust on the friction faces.

4. Open all trap doors and auger troughs. Remove sieves and safety guards.

5. Remove all chains. Wash with Diesel fuel and dip in hot chain grease or oil with chain oil.

6. Release tension from V-belts. Remove belts from variable speed pulleys (see group »MAINTENANCE«).

7. Preserve inner faces of variable speed pulleys to prevent rust. Also grease all polished parts such as knife fingers and crop lifters.

8. Hydraulic system: Change the oil ofthe lift hydraulic system. Clean the screen filter in the tank of the lift hydraulic system, (see group »MAINTENANCE«).

9. After cleaning check the combine for worn or defective parts and have the machine immediately repaired if necessary.

10. After also the engine has been prepared for storage, get the combine under cover in a dry place where no fertilizers are kept in storage.

11. Raise the cutterbar on blocks to release tension from hydraulic equipment.

12. Jack up the combine to take load off the tyres. Use tyre protective paint to prevent rubber from deteriorating.

The efficiency of the combine depends essentially on the care given to the engine. Periodical checking, lubrication and cleaning of the engina are therefore of vital importance.

FUEL FEED SYSTEM

Fueltank Fuel tank capacity is 200 Iitres. A clear plastic hose (8) at the rear of the tank indicates the level of fuel in the tank.

An additional electrical fuel gauge is located in the combined instrument gauge on the operator's platform.

Use clean fuel only. Clean the sieve in the tank filler neck from time to time with Diesel fuel. Renew sieve if damaged. Close filler cap tightly after refueling.

DOMINATOR 68 S Fill the fuel tank immediately after finishing work, as this will reduce condensation of water in the tank.

Drain off moisture and sediment which may have sett1ed in the sump M of the tank by removing the drain plug (2).

Fuel sediment bowl Sediment bowl M cleans the fuel before releasing it to the fuel pump. Remove and clean bowl if water or sediment is present. Loosen the clip (1), remove and cleanthe bowl (4). Remove sieve (2), wash in Diesel fue1 and blow out with compressed air. Check for tight fit of rubber seal (3) and renew seals if damaged (Fig. 8).

Fuel Filter The fuel filter retains even the smallest particles of dirt floating in the fue!.

Renew the filter annually. If necessary (e. g. if fuel is dirty) the filter should be renewed more frequently. To renew the filter proceed as folIows: Unscrew filter element (B) from filter head (A) and renew the complete filter element. Make sure that surfaces are clean and that the seals are in good condition (Fig. 10).

Bleed the fuel system every time the fuel filter has been renewed.

Retighten the bleed screws, when fuel, free from air bubbles, flows out. Keep onoperatingthe pump while tightening the bleed screws.

4. Secure the hand pump plunger by turningthe knurled nut.

ENGINE OlL CHANGE Refer to the Lubricants Chart for recommended oil qualities and oil change frequencies. a) Never check engine oillevel while the engine is running. b) The oil should never be higher than the FULL-mark (maximum) and never fall below the SAFE-mark (minimum) on the dipstick. c) Always fill with good quality oil that is equivalent to the oil that has been initially used. d) Engine oil should be drained off from a hot engine immediately after stopping engine to flush dirt particles floating in the oil tagether with the oil out of the sump.

e) When refitting the filter always care for clean sealing faces and ensure that the seals are in good condition and properly seated.

f) After pouring the oil into the engine crankcase, run the engine for a short while at slow idling speed so that the filter bowl gets filled with oil. Then check the level ofthe oil and top up if necessary.

Unscrew oil drain hose (A) at point (1) behind the engine on the roof of the combine. Remave the cap from the oil filler neck and collect the oil in a container (see Lubricants Chart for oil quantitiy). After the oil has been drained off, securely tighten the screw plug at the end of the drain hose and attach the hose so that it is not chafed or otherwise damaged when the machine parts are moving (Fig. 17).

MERCEDES OM 352 The oil filter (1) contains a paper-element filter. Replace the filter element whenever the engine oil is changed.

Clean the filter bowl thoroughly. Make sure that the return hole in the long bolt is not clogged up.

IMPORTANT: Move the throttle lever to the »Stop« position to prevent the engine from firing and then turn the engine over with the starter only until oil pressure is indicated. The starter must not be operated longer than 20 seconds. Run theengine briefly at slow idlingspeed and examine engine and oil filter for leaks. Stop the engine. Wait for about five minutes, recheck the level of the oil in the engine and replenish oil to the upper mark on the dipstick, if required.

COOllNG SYSTEM FanV-belts Check the tension of the fan V-belt regularly by applyi ng moderate thumb pressure in the middle of the longest run of belts between pulleys. If the tension is correct, the belts will deflect approx. 8 mm. Atthe latest adjust the tension when the belts deflect 12 mm.

The tension of the fan V-belts can be adjusted·by altering the position of the alternator

MERCEDES OM 352 Loosen securing component (8) somewhat that fixes the alternator in position. Slacken clamping bolt (I<) and the lock nut of adjuster nut (M). Adjust the fan belt tension by altering the position of the alternator through nut (M). Then retighten clamping bolt (I<) and the lock nut. Firmly tighten the securing components (8). See Fig.23.

DOMINATOR 68 S Ifthe machine is equipped with a cab heater, taps (2) for heater feed line M and heater return line (R) must be opened when the cooling water is being drained.

The taps must also be opened when the cooling system is being filled with water.

Run the engine for a short time to allow the heating system to fill. Top up water as necessary (Fig. 32).

Protection against corrosion If no anti-freeze is added to the cooling water, care should be taken to drain the cooling system weil in time before freezing weather can be expected. Drain the water at the radiator and at the engine block. In that case we also recommend to add an anti-corrosive agent to the circulating cooling water before starting up the engine (see Lubricants Chart and Engine Winter Storage Instructions).

The separation of oil observed when anti-freeze is added will not diminish the anti-corrosive effect.

Warning notice If the radiator is left empty during the inactive period, attach a warning notice showing the inscription »CAUTIONI Radiator contains no water« to the filler neck. Attach the same notice to the steering wheel.

Close the radiator filler cap tightly. Never put cold water into a hot engine. Take care the cooling water is clean, and does not contain too much lime and chlorine.

Whatever containers are used for cooling water should be absolutely clean.

Cooling water temperature A temperature gauge shows the temperature of the cooling water. Correct temperature is 80 to 90° C (176 to 194° F) with the combine operating.

Warning signal Sender (G) releases a warning signalby means ofthe horn when the engine overheats (Fig. 33).

Radiator screening If the radiator screening or radiator is dirty the engine overheats. With the engine stopped, check the condition of the radiator screen box (K) and radiator regularly and clean the screening and radiator if necessary.

Unlatch and swing out the screen box. The radiator and the screen box are now readily accessible for cleaning. a) Allow the radiator to cool down. Then clean the radiator from the engine side. b) If the engine is extremely hot, allow the engine to cool down by running it for a short while at slow idling speed and then switch it off. c) The screen box and its frame mustfit snugly.

Cleaning rotor The air flow created by the cooling fan is used to drive rotor (R), which helps to keep the radiator clean.

Regularly check to make sure that the rotor is rotating freely (Fig. 34).

Overpressure The diaphragm beneath the radiator cap (2) is compressed if there is an overpressure in the cooling system. This allows the steam to escape through the over-flow pipe (4). See Fig. 35.

CAUTIONI Be careful when opening the radiator cap. Loosen the cap until it reaches its stop and allow the excess pressure to escape.

DOMINATOR 68 S DRY-TYPE AIR CLEANER When the air cleaner is restricted, a red light in the combined instrument gauge is activated by vacuum control switch (K). The switch is located in the suction pipe between the air cleaner and engine (Fig. 36).

Cleaning the air cleaner intake screen (machines with dust extractor unit) Inspect air intake screen (A) regularly, especially when operating in extreme dusty conditions. With the engine stopped, clean the screen as necessary.

Especially on machines with a dust extractor unit it is of utmost importance to clean the air intake screen carefully at regular intervals.

Cleaning the air cleaner

1. Clean theair cleaner when the indicator light comes on.

2. Clean the main filter cartridge and, when necessary, replace it by a new one.

3. Thoroughly clean the air cleaner body before inserting the cleaned or new air filter cartridge.

Dry-type air cleaner with dust cup: Remove dust cup (0). Take out the main cartridge (F) and clean by gently tapping its top side against the hand. Compressed air, not to exceed 5 bar (71 psi) may be used for cleaning.

Remove baffle plate (P) from dust cup (0). Clean the dust cup. Renew the main cartridge annually or when damage to the cartridge is noted. Reinstall the main cartridge (F).

When installing baffle plate (P) to the dust cup, make sure that the cut-out in the edge of the baffle plate fits the raised mark on the dust cup.

DOMINATOR 68 S Then install the dust cup to the air cleaner body making sure that the dust cup fits tightly and that the arrow and the words OBENITOP are positioned at the top (Fig. 38).

Always use genuine main filter cartridges. When installing the cartridge make sure that it fits snugly.

Dry-type air cleaner with dust extractor unit: Heavy particles of dirt and circulating, loose dust particles are sucked out of the air cleaner body by the dust extractor unit.

Flexible hose (8) is connected to the air cleaner cover (0) and to the tail pipe (A). Most of the dust is thus steadily sucked out of the air cleaner body and discharged through the tail pipe of the silencer.

When the indicator light goes on and the buzzer sounds, the air cleaner must be cleaned and serviced. Every time the air cleanes is being serviced, the cover (0) has to be removed. Take out the main filter cartridge (F) and clean it by gently tapping its top side against the hand. Compressed air, not to exceed 5 bar (71 psi) may be used for cleaning.

Renew the main filter cartridge annually or when damage to the cartridge is noted. Clean the air cleaner body too. Reinstall the main filter cartridge (F).

Reinstall air cleaner cover (0) making sure that it fits snugly and tighten the coversecurely (Fig. 39).

BATTERY

Battery (H) is located behind the covering on the right hand side of the machine (Fig. 41).

The combine is eq uipped with a 12 V battery. Before operating the combine for the first time, fill the battery with dilute sulphuric acid (specific gravity 1.285 in normal and 1.23 in tropical climates) and have it charged. Check the electrolyte level regularly, at least every two weeks and top up with distilled water if necessary. The level should be at all times approx.

10 mm above the battery plates.

When preparing the combine for winter storage, the battery should be charged up and recharged every six weeks or it should be taken off the machine and cared for by a battery service specialist while not in use (see also Engine Winter Storage).

Alternator a) Never disconnect the cables connectingthe alternator and battery with the alternator running. b) 00 not connect battery terminals in~reverse polarity. This will damage the semiconductors. e) Before doing any electric welding on the combine, be sure to disconnect the alternator terminals! f) The battery provides the current for the field excitation required to start the alternator action via the charge indicator bulb. Burned outbulbs must be, therefore, renewed, to ensure positive field excitation.

DOMINATOR 68 S

ENGINE WINTER STORAGE Meticulous care of the engine before the combine is put away for the winter is AN ABSOLUTE MUST, since damage which could be caused in storage is very expensive to repair.

The greatest dangers for engines not in daily use are: a) RUST that settles on all exposed smooth parts and bearing surfaces, b) ACID that is inherent in grease and fuels of poor quality.

The following preservative materials are required: Anti-rust oil, quantity depends on engine type (see Lubricants Chart); Anti-rust additive for the cooling system of water-cooled engines (see Lubricants Chart).

Engine care 1. Clean exterior surface of engine thoroughly.

2. Empty the fuel tank (on Diesel powered combines) and rinse with fuel.Clean the fuel sediment bowl and renew fuel filters. Pour a sufficient quantity of fuel mixture (10 parts of Diesel fuel to 1 part of anti-rust oil) into the fuel tank.

3. Replace cooling water hoses and air intake hoses by newones.

4. If no anti-freeze has been added to the cooling water, mix an anti-rust additive with the cooling water (approx. 1/2litre [0.53 U.S. quarts] of anti-rust additive to 10 litres [10.57 U.S. quarts] of cooling water). Stir the mixture before filling the cooling system. The mixture mixes with anti-freeze and can also be added during the harvesting period.

When the new combine is delivered, anti-freeze solution and anti-corrosive additive is mixed to the engine cooling water.

5. Run the engine until warm and switch off. Drain the oil while warm. Replace oil filter.

6. Fill the engine sump with anti-rust oil (see Lubricants Chart).

7. Run engine for about 5 minutes at full throttle. Stop the engine and remove the air intake pipe from the induction manifold. Use an atomizer to spray the anti-rust oil into the induction manifold. At the same time turn the engine by means of the starter motor, with the throttle lever in the »stop« position (fuel feed pump switched off). Attach air intake pipe.

8. Renew the main cartridge of air cleaner. Remove air cleaner intake screen. Seal the air intake opening and also the tail pipe of sileneer.

9. Hang a warning sign on the oil filler neck: »CAUTIONI Engine is filled with anti-rust oil.« Drain this oil before operation. See Operator's Manual.

10. If no.anti-freeze solution is added to the cooling water, drain the radiator and the engine block. The drain taps and drain plugs, respectively, must be left open. Hang a warning sign »CAUTIONI NO WATER« on the radiator filler cap and steering wheel.

If the cooling system contains anti-freeze solution check for correct concentration.

11. Empty the fuel tank completely and spray the inside with anti-rust oil.

12. Take the battery to a battery service specialist who should care for the battery while it is not in use. The battery mayaiso be removed from the machine for use in other vehicles.
