2 Introduction INTRODUCTION This operator's manual is the original operator's manual. Hereafter, it is referred to simply as the operator's manual.

This operator's manual contains information on the use, adjustment and operation of the CLAAS tedder.

The advice on care and maintenance should be followed in order to ensure that the machine is always ready for operation and will have a long service life.

Assembly and regular inspections of your machine should be carried out by your specialist workshop.

Failure to carry out maintenance work, or incorrect operation will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of valuable time.

With correct operation and maintenance, you will benefit from the technical know-how and experience that went into the design of the machine, and your tedder will always work reliably.

4 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE Please note that in the following chapters, the CLAAS tedder is also simply referred to as the machine.

In order to avert danger, the instructions in this operator's manual must be read and understood by all persons using the machine, performing maintenance or servicing work or inspections on it.

Pay particular attention to the sections "Concerning Safety" and "Before Commissioning".

The use of spare parts, accessories and ancillary equipment not manufactured originally by CLAAS or not checked and approved by CLAAS can change the specified design characteristics of the CLAAS machine or can detract from its performance, with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive safety of the machine and health and safety (accident prevention).

CLAAS cannot accept liability for any damage or personal injury resulting from the use of parts, accessories and ancillary equipment other than those manufactured or approved by CLAAS. Technical specifications, dimensions and weights are understood with the usual tolerances. The manufacturer reserves the right to make modifications to the equipment described herein in the interests of technological development. Errors and omissions excepted.

Front, rear, right and left is always to be understood in the direction of travel.

5 Safety Rules Prior to operation, read the operator's manual and follow the safety instructions!

IDENTIFICATION OF WARNING AND DANGER SIGNS All parts of this manual relating to your safety or the safe operation of the machine are marked with the following signs. Please pass all safety instructions on to other users, too.

DANGER! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so would cause danger to the life and limb of the operator and the people around him.

– Preventive measures.

ATTENTION! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so could result in damage to the machine.

– Measures to prevent damage to the machine.

NOTE! Sign to indicate instructions for a more efficient and economic use of the machine.

ENVIRONMENT! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed in order to avoid damage to the environment.

Danger to the environment is caused by irregular handling and/or incorrect disposal of toxic material (e. g. used oil).

INTENDED USE The CLAAS tedder is designed exclusively for professional use in accordance with recognised agricultural practice for the harvesting of fodder plants.

The tedder is an agricultural machine designed to be fitted to a tractor / tractor truck licensed / approved by the manufacturer and which is suitable and designed for tedding or spreading fodder plants while travelling over the field. The term fodder plants is understood to refer to stalk crops such as grass, lucerne and grain straw.

With its tedding aggregate, the tedder teds or spreads fodder plants which have been mown and are lying flat on the field. The fodder plants are deposited behind the tedder, ready for further processing.

When travelling on public roads, depending on the applicable road vehicle regulations, the tedder can be fitted to the rear of a tractor / tractor truck licensed or approved by the manufacturer and trailed.

The machine may only be used, serviced and repaired by persons who are familiar with the handling of the machine and who have been informed of the hazards involved.

Intended use is understood to include compliance with the instructions contained in the operator's manual and with the operating, maintenance and servicing conditions prescribed by the manufacturer.

The owner and all persons using the machine must observe the relevant accident prevention regulations and all other generally recognised rules of safety engineering, occupational health and road safety.

Any use above and beyond this is deemed to be "inappropriate use.“ The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage resulting from inappropriate use.

Responsibility for such use lies exclusively with the user.

For special cases, you can request corresponding information on intended use from CLAAS.

The warning and danger signs attached to the machine contain important instructions for safe operation. These instructions involve your safety - observe them at all times!

Safety Rules AVOIDABLE INCORRECT APPLICATIONS The machine is not designed for any use above and beyond the intended use, and such use therefore constitutes incorrect application of the machine as defined by the Machinery Directive. The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage resulting from inappropriate use. Responsibility for such use lies exclusively with the user.

Examples of such incorrect applications of the CLAAS tedder are:

• Failure to comply with the procedures described in the operator's manual when carrying out adjustment, cleaning and maintenance operation.

Always comply with the local traffic regulations when driving on public roads!

Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions. It is too late to do this once you have started work with the machine!

Wear close-fitting clothing when working on the front attachment. Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothes!

Keep the machine clean to prevent the danger of fire!

• Using the machine for mulching • Using the machine as a scarifier GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION REGULATIONS Basic rule: Always check that the machine and the tractor are safe to operate and comply with the road traffic regulations before putting them into operation!

General information: In addition to the instructions in this operator's manual, comply with the general safety and accident prevention regulations!

The warnings and signs attached to the machine contain important information on safe operation, and it is imperative for your safety that you observe them!

Position the support devices correctly when attaching or disconnecting the machine! (Firm stand!)

Pay particular attention when hitching up and uncoupling the machine to and from the tractor!

Always attach the ballast weights as prescribed at the attachment points provided for this purpose!

Observe the max. permissible transport dimensions!

Observe the permissible axle loads and total weights!

Never leave the operator's platform while the machine is moving!

Check and fit transport equipment - e.g. lighting, warning devices and any safety devices!

Operating devices (ropes, chains, linkages etc.) of remotely controlled equipment must be routed in such a way that they cannot trigger unintentional movements in any transport or working positions!

Before driving on public roads, prepare the machine accordingly and secure as prescribed by the manufacturer!

Always adapt your driving speed to suit the prevailing conditions! When driving up- or downhill or across a slope, avoid making sudden turns!

Driving characteristics, steering and braking performance are influenced by any trailed machines or towed and by ballast weights! Ensure that the machine remains steerable and can be braked safely!

When driving around curves, make allowance for the wide swing and/or the inertia of the machine!

5.2

Safety Rules Do not put the machine into operation unless all safety devices are fitted and in the correct position!

Persons must stay out of the working area and danger zone of the equipment!

Keep out of the turning and swinging range of the machine!

Remote-powered (e.g. hydraulically powered) components present a risk of crushing or shearing!

Before leaving the tractor, secure the machine!

Lower any attached equipment completely! Stop the engine and remove the ignition key!

Never enter the area between the tractor and the machine before the vehicle has been immobilised with the parking brake and/or secured against rolling by means of wheel chocks!

ATTACHED MACHINES Before attaching the machine to / detaching it from the three-point linkage, move the operating lever to a position in which unintentional raising or lowering is impossible!

When attaching machines to the three-point linkage, the linkage categories of the tractor and the machine must match or corresponding modifications must be made!

There is a risk of injury due to crushing and shearing points in the area of the three-point linkage!

When operating the remote control for the three-point linkage, do not stand between the tractor and the machine!

When the machine is in transport position, always ensure that the tractor three-point linkage is sufficiently secured to prevent lateral movement!

The protective tube and guard of the universal drive shaft and the PTO shaft guard must be fitted and functional! Ensure that the universal drive shafts are covered by the guards as prescribed in both transport and working position!

The PTO shaft must be switched off, the engine turned off and the key removed from the ignition before fitting or detaching the universal drive shaft!

When using universal drive shafts with overload or overrrun clutches which are not protected by the safety devices on the tractor, overload or overrun clutches must be installed on the implement side!

Always ensure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and attached!

Attach the safety chain to prevent the power take-off shaft guard from rotating with the drive shaft.

Before switching the PTO shaft on, check that the selected speed and direction of rotation of the tractor PTO drive is compatible with the max. permissible speed and direction of rotation of the equipment!

Before engaging the PTO shaft, ensure that there is no-one inside the machine's danger area!

Never switch the PTO drive on while the engine is turned off!

When working with the PTO shaft, ensure that there is no-one in the area of the rotating PTO shaft or universal drive shaft!

Always turn off the PTO shaft when it is bent too far or when it is not required!

Attention! After it has been disengaged, there is a danger that the inertia of the PTO shaft will cause it to run on! Stay away from the machine during this time! Do not start work on the equipment until all movement has stopped!

When driving on public roads with the machine raised, the control lever must be locked to prevent unintentional lowering!

Never clean, lubricate or adjust the PTO-driven equipment or the universal drive shaft without first disengaging the PTO shaft, stopping the engine and removing the ignition key!

TRAILED MACHINES

Deposit the uncoupled universal drive shaft on the bracket provided or hang it up using the chain!

Secure equipment against rolling away.

After detaching the universal drive shaft, place the protective cover over the stub of the PTO drive!

Observe the max. permissible load for the tow jaw coupling, swinging drawbar or hitch!

When using a drawbar, ensure that there is sufficient freedom of movement at the suspension point!

Repair any damage immediately, before starting work with the machine!

PTO OPERATION Use only the universal drive shafts prescribed by the manufacturer!

Safety Rules HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

MAINTENANCE

The hydraulic system is under high pressure!

Before carrying out servicing, maintenance and cleaning work or remedying malfunctions, always switch off the drive and wait until the engine has come to a standstill!

– Remove the ignition key!

When connecting hydraulic cylinders, ensure that the hydraulic hoses are connected as prescribed!

When connecting the hydraulic hoses to the hydraulic system of the tractor, ensure that the hydraulic system is unpressurized on both the tractor and the machine side!

Female and male couplings of hydraulic connections between tractor and machine should be labelled to prevent them being connected up wrongly! If the connections are swapped, the functions are reversed (e.g. raising/lowering) – Danger of accidents!

Inspect hydraulic hose connections regularly, and replace them if damaged or deteriorated! The replacement hose connections must meet the machine manufacturer's technical requirements!

Use suitable aids to prevent injury when checking for leaks!

Fluids (hydraulic oil) escaping under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. In the event of injury, consult a doctor immediately!

– Danger of infection!

Before performing work on the hydraulic system, lower the machine, depressurise the system and switch off the engine!

TYRES When working on tyres, ensure that the machine is safely parked and secured against rolling away (wheel chocks)!

Fitting tyres and wheels requires specialist know-how and the correct tools!

Repair work on tyres and wheels may only be carried out by professionals using the correct hand tools!

Wait until the machine has come to a complete stop!

Repair work on pretensioned energy stores (springs, pressure accumulators etc.) must be performed by trained personnel using the prescribed tools and must therefore always be carried out in specialist workshops!

Regularly check that nuts and bolts are tightly seated and tighten them if required!

Before carrying out maintenance operations on the raised machine, ensure that it is securely positioned on suitable supports!

Use suitable tools and wear safety gloves when replacing working parts!

Dispose of oils, grease and filters appropriately!

Always disconnect the power supply before performing work on the electrical system!

Safety devices which are subject to wear must be inspected regularly and replaced in good time!

Spare parts must at least meet the technical requirements specified by the equipment manufacturer! This can be ensured, e.g. by using original parts!

When performing electrical welding work on the tractor and attached machines, disconnect cables at the generator and the battery!

NOISE PRESSURE LEVEL If the noise pressure level at the driver's ear exceeds 85 dB (A) (see »Specifications«) ear protection must be worn.

Check air pressure regularly! Observe the recommended tyre pressures!

Safety Rules DE-COMMISSIONING AND DISPOSAL When the machine or its components reach the end of their service life and are handed over for scrapping, the components must be disposed of in an appropriate manner. Observe the regulations imposed by the relevant local authorities.

The operating fluids in the machine must be disposed of by special means and must not be allowed to leak into the environment. For further information on how to dispose of these substances appropriately, contact your local authority, CLAAS workshop or CLAAS customer service.

– Spent batteries contain hazardous substances and must be returned to the retailer, disposed of appropriately or handed in to a waste disposal centre. Do not dispose of spent batteries with household waste.

– Operating fluids such as oils, hydraulic fluids, brake fluid or fuels must be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of accordingly.

– Refrigerants must be disposed of by specialist companies with appropriately trained personnel and the requisite equipment. Refrigerants must never be allowed to escape into the atmosphere. Have refrigerants disposed of by a CLAAS specialist workshop. Observe the relevant regulations for the country in question.

– Observe the regulations imposed by the relevant local authorities.

– Products bearing the symbol (1) must not be disposed of with the household waste when they reach the end of their service life.

– Materials bearing the symbol (2) are to be reused as instructed.

– Packaging material should be recycled and not disposed of with household waste.

– Plastics labelled with the material of which they are made, for example PPTV20, should be recycled and not disposed of with household waste.

Safety Rules

Safety Rules SAFETY DECALS WITH PICTORIALS Safety decals are attached to the danger zones of the machine. These safety decals help to alert persons to hazards which can cause personal injury. The pictorials on the decals provide instructions to avoid the hazard.

These safety signs, their placement on the machine and a brief explanatory text are shown on the following pages.

The CLAAS part no. of every decal is stated ahead of the text.

The figure in ( ) refers to the adjacent picture and indicates the correct location of the decal on the machine.

Safety decals that are damaged or cannot be recognised any more must be replaced immediately by new ones.

When parts that have decals are replaced, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

Assembly FITTING THE MACHINE FOR THE FIRST TIME Before fitting the machine for the first time, match the hitching and the universal drive shaft to the tractor.

1. Check the scope of delivery against the delivery note.

2. Assemble the machine according to the instructions.

3. Hitch up the machine, and adapt the hitching points if necessary – see Hitching, page 8.5.

4. Adapt and connect the universal drive shaft – see Universal drive shaft, page 8.7.

5. Connect the hydraulic hoses – see Hydraulics, page 8.9.

6. Carry out the operations described in Check and observe the following points prior to operation on page 8.1.

7. Put the machine Into operation – see Operation, page 9.1.

8 Prior to Operation DANGER! Work on the tedder must always be performed with the engine at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key.

CHECK AND OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING POINTS PRIOR TO OPERATION 1. For operation of the VOLTO 870 and the VOLTO 770, the tractor must be equipped with a double-acting control valve, in the case of the VOLTO 670 with a single-acting control valve.

2. Lubricate the tedder thoroughly prior to operation.

3. Check that all bolts and screws are tight.

4. Check all safety devices (e.g. overload clutches, covers of drive elements,...) for correct function and installation.

5. Check the oil level in the gearbox.

6. Observe the PTO speed – see Specifications on page 6.1!

7. Engage the tractor PTO shaft at idle speed only.

8. After hitching up the tedder and connecting up the universal drive shaft, carefully raise and lower the tedder to check that the universal drive shaft can move freely.

9. Use safety chains to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

10. Check tyres for correct inflation, adjust according to Specifications on page 6.1. if necessary.

11. Check operation of lighting, turn flashers and brake lights.

12. Never leave the tedder to run unattended.

13. Instruct all persons to leave the danger zone, and switch off the tedder immediately if persons approach the danger zone.

Prior to Operation ADJUSTMENTS TO THE TRACTOR Axle loads, minimum ballasts and total weight calculation The front axle of the tractor must always be loaded with at least 20% of the tractor's empty weight.

Fitting of machines to the front and rear three-point linkage must not cause the permissible total weight, the permissible axle loading, and the carrying capacity of the tractor tyres to be exceeded.

Check that these preconditions are fulfilled by performing the following calculations or by weighing the tractor-machine combination.

Before operating the tedder for the first time, adjust the hitching and universal drive shaft to suit the tractor.

CAUTION! Maximum drive shaft angles, and the quietest operation of the tedder can only be achieved if the machine is correctly hitched.

Prior to Operation Headstock Attach the hitch to the lower links of the tractor hydraulics and secure it (Fig. 1).

Without gauge wheel on the headstock: Hook the locking pin of the upper link into one of the three drilled holes (1) on the headstock and secure it.

With gauge wheel on the headstock: When driving on uneven ground, hook the upper link into the middle slotted hole (2) and secure it.

On even ground, locate the upper link into the upper elongated hole (3) and secure in position.

(Fig. 2) CAUTION! Locate the upper link (4) so that the connection point (5) on the machine in the working position is higher than the connection point (6) on the tractor.

If necessary, adjust the height position of the connection point (6) on the tractor.

– Check that all locks are securely engaged before starting work with the drive shaft.

– Attach the safety chains (2) for the drive shaft guard to the machine and the tractor with the hook.

Push the drive shaft onto the tractor's PTO. The overload clutch must be on the machine side.

Check the length of the PTO shaft with the tedder raised, lowered and in angled configuration, Correct the shaft length as necessary – see Adapting the length, page 8.8.

Secure the universal drive shaft guard against rotation by securing thechains (2)!

Always engage the clutch slowly to avoid straining the drive. Observe the recommendations of the drive shaft manufacturer.

– Do not exceed max. PTO speed – see Specifications on page 6.1.

– Only engage the tractor PTO with the machine in working position – see Working position, page 9.1.

Prior to Operation Adapting the length Pull drive shaft sections apart and connect both sections to the PTO stub shafts. To find the shortest length that the shaft will have to accommodate, hold the two sections alongside each other and mark.

6 Observe the max. permissible shaft length (LB).

Try to have the max. possible overlap of the profile tubes. During operation, the universal drive shaft must not be extended beyond half of the available extension (PU) compared to the length when fully closed (LZ).

In the shortest operating length, the universal drive shaft halves must not collide. A minimum clearance (a) = approx. 40 mm must still be available.

Shorten the inner and outer guard tubes by the same amount.

Shorten the inner and outer splined sections by the same amount as the guard tubes.

Deburr the cut edges, and carefully remove all swarf and filings.

Grease the sliding surfaces of the profile tubes.

Prop stand Lift the machine slightly with the tractor hydraulics.

Extract the pin (1) on the prop stand (2) on the left hand side. Hinge the prop stand (2) to the rear until the pin (1) engages.

Prior to Operation Hydraulics DANGER! The shut-off valve must always be closed when travelling on the road and before uncoupling the hydraulic hose.

ATTENTION! Danger of contamination of the tractor hydraulics!

– Clean the male and female couplings of the hydraulic hose each time before connecting.

VOLTO 870 / 770: Connect the hydraulic hoses (1) and (2) for unfolding and folding of the machine to the two connections of the double-acting control valve on the tractor.

– If necessary, counterweights must be fitted.

The adjustment of the working height has a considerable influence on the soiling of the forage and the service life of the tines.

Tilt the rotors forwards until the tines just touch the ground by lengthening or shortening the upper link (8).

Operation Operating the tedder

• Lower the tedder onto the ground.

• Before driving the machine into the crop, engage the tractor PTO shaft with the tractor engine running at idle speed and slowly increase the number of revolutions to the max. permissible level.

• Drive the machine into the mown crop on the ground.

• The ground speed depends upon the individual application conditions (ground conditions, quantity and consistency of the crop). The speed should be selected so that all the crop is taken up cleanly by the tines.

• The scatter pattern can be influenced by changing the PTO speed (max. 540 rpm). Select a higher speed for heavy fodder and a lower speed for light fodder.

ATTENTION! 28

Do not allow the slip clutch to operate for longer than 10 seconds. If the angle of the universal drive shaft is very acute, the PTO shaft should first be disengaged.

Check the inclination of the rotors at frequent intervals whilst working.

VOLTO 670: When working, the control lever for the three point linkage and the tractor hydraulics connection must be set to float position (freewheel).

Tedding with the limit curtain (additional equipment) The limit curtain can be used as a marking aid during tedding (e.g. with low forage density).

Procedure: 1. Clearing edges of fields: The machine is driven anticlockwise around the field, and the limit curtain limits the spread on the right-hand, outer side.

2. Tedding: The machine is driven clockwise around the field, and the limit curtain makes a marker swath at a distance from the untedded area.

3. During subsequent passes, the marker swath is tedded whilst a new swath is formed on the other side.

10 Maintenance IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS DANGER! Always switch off the drive and the tractor engine for troubleshooting, for repair, maintenance, and cleaning work.

– Remove the ignition key.

DANGER! Always ensure that the machine is safely supported before performing repair, maintenance or cleaning work on the raised tedder.

– use suitable stands!

Hydraulic system DANGER! Before working on the hydraulic system, always release the pressure and lower raised rotor units.

Fluid escaping under high pressure (hydraulic oil etc.) can penetrate the skin and cause serious injuries.

Immediately consult a doctor in case of injury, otherwise serious infections can set in.

Lubrication Observe the oil change intervals and the oil type in the gearbox specified by the manufacturer. Only use high-quality branded grease and oil to lubricate the machine. Clean the grease nipples before applying the grease gun. Lubricate the machine according to the lubrication chart at the end of this manual.

The specified lubrication intervals only apply for normal conditions of use. Lubricate more frequently if the machine is used in severe conditions.

Occasionally lubricate all joints with oil or grease.

ENVIRONMENT! Dispose of oil, grease, and filters in the prescribed manner.

Guards (guard frame) DANGER! Open guards only with the drive switched off and the engine at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key.

Refit the guard frame and any other protective devices after completing any repair or maintenance work.

Check the guards at regular intervals.

Replace damaged safety devices by new-ones.

ENVIRONMENT! Dispose of oil, grease, and filters in the prescribed manner.

Check hydraulic lines at regular intervals, and replace them in the case of damage or ageing! Replaced hydraulic lines must correspond to the technical requirements of the equipment manufacturer.

Repair work on the hydraulic system may only be carried out by authorised special workshops.

Screws and bolts Check all bolts for tightness and retighten if necessary.

Make sure that all securing pins and clips are in place.

FASTENERS All safety-relevant fasteners such as bolts, screws, pins etc. must be checked regularly for wear and deformation.

Any worn or damaged fasteners must be replaced.

TYRES Check the air pressure of the running wheel tyres regularly.

For pressure – see Specifications, page 6.1.

Every time a wheel is mounted, the wheel nuts or bolts must be retightened after the first 10 working hours and then checked for tightness every 50 working hours.

CLEANING AND CARE

• Do not use high-pressure cleaners or steam cleaners to clean cut-out clutches, bearing, hydraulic and electrical parts.

– Danger of damage and rust formation.

• Cleaning with excessive pressure can damage paintwork.

• After cleaning the machine with a high-pressure cleaner, the bearing locations must be lubricated before and after washing!

Then carry out a brief test run to expel water which has penetrated the bearing locations.

• There should be a collar of grease on the bearing locations. This protects the bearing locations against the ingress of dirt, plant juices and water.
