1 Introduction INTRODUCTION This manual provides information on the use, setting and servicing of the CLAAS rotary tedder.

The advice on the care and servicing should be followed in order to obtain maximum performance and long service.

The assembly and the regular inspection of your machine should be performed by your specialist workshop. Neglect in maintenance and service and incorrect use will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of valuable time.

By correct operation and servicing you can make full use of the technical knowledge and experience with which your machine has been designed.

3 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE The instructions set forth in this manual must be read carefully and followed by all persons concerned with the operation, maintenance, repair or inspection of this machine in order to prevent accidents.

Read especially sections “Safety Instructions” and “Before Operation”.

The use of spare parts, accessories and additional equipment which is not originally manufactured, and checked and released by CLAAS can have a negative effect on specific design features of the CLAAS machine or on its operability, thereby impairing active and/or passive operating safety, as well as safety at work (accident prevention).

CLAAS will in no way be liable for damage or personal injury caused by the use of other than original CLAAS parts, accessories and additional equipment.

Technical specifications, dimensions and weights are understood with the usual tolerances.

IMPORTANT: Front, rear, right and left refer to the direction of forward travel.

IDENTIFICATION PLATE When ordering spare parts, and in all correspondence, please state the Serial No. (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2) of your machine. This is necessary to ensure that you receive the correct spare parts.

The identification plate (1) with the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2) is fixed on the left side of the frame.

4 Safety Instructions Read and follow the operator's manual and the safety instructions before putting the rotary tedder into operation!

DESIGNATED USE The CLAAS rotary tedder is designed for the usual applications in agriculture only (designated use).

The tedder is designed and intended for processing cut stem crops lying on the ground.

Use in any other way is considered as contrary to the intended use. The manufacturer does not accept any liability for such use; the user accepts all risk arising from such use.

Designated use also includes observing the service, maintenance and repair conditions as prescribed by the manufacturer.

The CLAAS rotary tedder must be used, serviced and repaired only by persons who are familiar with the machine and which have been informed of the risks.

Observe the pertinent accident prevention regulations and other generally acknowledged regulations regarding safety and occupational health, as well as the regulations and standards relevant to motor vehicles and traffic.

Modifications of the tedder without proper authority exclude the manufacturer's liability for damage resulting from any such modifications.

GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION INSTRUCTIONS Basic rule: Always check the operating and road safety of tractor and machine before starting up!

General: In addition to the information set forth in this operator's manual, also follow the general instructions for safety and accident prevention.

The attached warning and information labels provide important information on operating the machine without danger. These instructions involve your safety – observe them at all times!

Follow the regulations in force when you use public roads!

Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions, as it will be too late once you have set off.

Clothing worn by the operator must be close-fitting.

Avoid wearing loose jackets, shirts or ties!

Prevent fires by keeping the machine clean!

Before moving away, always check the immediate vicinity of the machine (e.g. for children!). Ensure adequate visibility!

No riders are allowed on the machine during operation and during transport!

Always connect the implement correctly to the tractor and connect and secure the machine to the prescribed couplings!

Always place the jack in the appropriate position when hitching and unhitching the machine – stability!

Use special care when hitching the machine to the tractor and when unhitching the machine!

Make sure that balance weights are correctly fixed at the provided points!

Observe the permissible transport dimensions!

Observe the maximum permissible axle loads and total weights!

Never leave the operator's platform when driving!

Check and mount transport equipment – such as lights, warning devices, and if required protecting devices and guards!

Operating devices (ropes, chains, linkages etc.) of remotely controlled mechanisms must be positioned in such a way that they do not trigger unintentional operation in any transport or operating position!

For road travel prepare the machine and lock any moving parts as prescribed by the manufacturer!

Always adapt your ground speed to the ground conditions! Avoid making sharp turns when driving up or down slopes or when driving across the slope!

The operating, steering and braking behaviour will be affected by the trailed machine! Therefore ensure adequate steering and braking power!

When making turns, always take into consideration the width and/or inertia of the implement!

Operate the machine only when all guards are fitted and in the correct position!

Ensure all persons stand clear of the operating area and of the area of danger!

Keep clear of the swivelling range of the operating machine.

Safety Instructions Watch for pinch and shear points on parts that are operated, for instance by hydraulics!

Before leaving the tractor, ensure that the implement cannot roll away! Lower any mounted implements fully to the ground! Switch off the engine and remove the ignition key.

Make sure no-one is between the tractor and the machine without securing the vehicle with the parking brake and/or wheel chocks, to prevent it from rolling away!

MOUNTED MACHINES Before attaching the machines to or detaching the machines from the 3-point linkage, move the control lever to a position in which unintentional raising or lowering is not possible!

When attaching mounted machines to the 3-point linkage, the linkage categories of tractor and machine must correspond or the necessary modifications must be performed!

When universal drive shafts with overload or freewheeling clutches are used which are not protected by the tractor's guard, the overload or freewheeling clutches have to be installed next to the machine!

Always ensure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and securely fastened!

Secure universal drive shaft gear against rotating by hanging in the chains.

Before engaging the PTO shaft, ensure that the selected speed and the direction of rotation of the tractor's PTO shaft matches the permissible speed and the direction of rotation of the drive assembly of the machine!

Before engaging the PTO shaft ensure everybody is clear of the machine and stands a safe distance away!

Never engage the PTO shaft while the engine is stopped!

Injuries may be caused by crushing and shearing points in the area of the 3-point linkage!

When operating the PTO shaft no-one must ever stand in the vicinity of the rotating PTO stub shaft or universal drive shaft!

Do not stand between tractor and machine when operating the remote control unit for the 3-point linkage!

Always disengage the PTO shaft when the turn angle is extreme or when the PTO drive shaft is not used!

Always ensure that the tractor-3-point linkage is properly locked to prevent sideways movement in the transport position of the machine!

Danger: High-inertia implements run on after the PTO has been disengaged! Do not go near the machine until all mechanisms have stopped! The machine must be at a standstill before work can be carried out on the tedder!

During road transport with the machine raised, the control lever must be locked to prevent unintentional lowering of the machine!

TRAILED MACHINES Secure the machine to prevent it from rolling away.

Observe maximum permissible load capacity of couplings and swinging drawbar or hitch facility!

When hitching the machine at the drawbar, ensure that there is sufficient movement at the hitch point!

PTO OPERATION Only use universal drive shafts specified by the manufacturer!

Never attempt to clean, lubricate, repair or adjust the PTO drive or the universal drive shaft unless the PTO shaft has been disengaged, the engine has been switched off and the ignition key has been removed!

Whenever the universal drive shaft is not connected to the tractor it must be kept on the storage yoke or suspended with a chain!

After uncoupling the universal drive shaft the protective guard must be pushed on to the PTO stub shaft!

In case of damage, the defective parts must immediately be repaired before working with the machine!

Always ensure that the guards for the universal drive shaft and PTO stub shaft are installed and in a good condition! Ensure that the guards properly cover the universal drive shafts, both, in the transport and in the working position!

Always disengage the PTO shaft, stop the engine and remove the main switch key before attaching or detaching the universal drive shaft!

Safety Instructions TYRES

MAINTENANCE

When working on tyres make sure the machine is safely parked and secured so that it will not roll away (use wheel chocks)!

Repair, service and cleaning work and the elimination of malfunctions should only be performed with the drive and the engine switched off!

– Remove the ignition key!

Fitting tyres and wheels requires special training and expert knowledge and the correct tools!

Repair work on tyres on wheels must only be carried out by professionals and with correct tools!

Check the air pressure regularly! Observe the recommended tyre pressure!

Wait until the machine has come to a complete stop!

Repair work on pretensioned energy accumulators (springs, hydraulic accumulators etc.) should be carried out in specialist workshops and with suitable tools!

Regularly check nuts and screws for tight fit and tighten them, if necessary!

When performing service work on the raised machine, ensure that it is supported safely using suitable supports!

Use suitable tools and wear safety gloves when replacing working parts!

Dispose of used oil and grease according to regulations!

Always disconnect the power supply before working on the electrical system!

Guards and protecting devices that are subjects to wear must be checked at regular intervals and replaced in good time!

Spare parts must at least comply with the technical standards required by the manufacturer of the implement! Original spare parts, for instance, are manufactured to meet these standards!

Before performing electrical welding work on the tractor and mounted implements, always disconnect the leads from the battery and alternator!

SOUND PRESSURE LEVEL Ear protection must be worn if the sound pressure level measured at the operator's ear exceeds 85 dB (A) (see “Specifications”).

Safety Instructions SAFETY DECALS WITH WARNING SYMBOLS Safety decals with warning symbols are placed in all danger areas of the machine to help identify risks of injury. The warning symbols in these decals show how to avoid injury and accidents by appropriate behaviour.

The location of the decals on the machine and their wording is shown on the following pages.

The CLAAS spare part number of the decal is quoted before each description.

The figures in brackets refer to the location on the machine of the decals shown in the figures Immediately replace damaged or illegible safety decals with warning symbols.

When replacing parts with decals affixed to them, make sure you affix new decals again to the new parts.

Never work on the rotary tedder unless the engine is stopped.

– Remove the ignition key!

CHECK AND OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE PUTTING INTO OPERATION 1. Thoroughly lubricate the rotary tedder before putting it into operation.

2. Check that all bolts and screws are tight.

3. Check the functioning and tightness of the safety features (e.g. overload clutch, coverings of driving parts. ...).

4. Check the oil level in the gearbox.

5. Observe the PTO speed see "Specifications", page 5.1!

6. Only attach the tractor p.t.o. shaft at idle speed.

7. After attaching the rotary tedder and connecting the universal drive shaft by carefully lifting and lowering the rotary tedder, check that the universal drive shaft can move freely.

8. Secure universal drive shaft gear against rotating by hanging in the chains.

9. Check tyres for correct inflation, if required correct according to "Specifications" page 5.1.

10. Check operation of lighting, indicators and brake lights.

11. Never let the rotary tedder run without proper supervision.

12. Direct all persons away from the danger zone; if any persons approach the danger zone, switch off the rotary tedder immediately.

Before Operation ATTACHMENT TO THE TRACTOR Danger!

Never work on the rotary tedder unless the engine is stopped.

– Remove the ignition key!

Caution!

Modifying the hitch of the machine to suit the tractor will allow the tedder to poerate smoothy and the PTO shaft joints to work at the maximum angle.

Before the first operation of the tedder make sure that the hitch an the PTO shaft suit the tractor.

Attach the drawbar(8) in the centre of the tractor link-age drawbar or on the swinging drawbar with the safety pin(7) and secure with the linch pin (9).

Minimise the lateral movement of the tractor linkage drawbar as much as possible.

Drive shaft Danger!

Never remove the guards (1) from the universal drive shaft!

– Check that all locks are securely engaged before starting work with the PTO drive shaft.

– Attach the safety chains (2) for the drive shaft guard to the machine and the tractor with the hook (Fig.2).

Connect the PTO shaft to the tractor PTO spline.

The overload clutch must be at the machine end.

The sliding length of the universal drive shaft must be checked with the tedder raised and lowered and also when it is set to the side.

Correct the shaft length as necessary – see Adapting the PTO shaft length, page 6.3.

Attention!

Always engage the PTO shaft slowly to save the drive mechanism. Observe the recommendations of the PTO shaft manufacturer.

Only engage the tractor PTO with the machine in working position! see "Working position", page 7.1!.

Adapting the PTO shaft length Pull drive shaft sections apart and connect both sections to the PTO stub shafts. Try to reach the shortest length that the shaft will have to accommodate, hold the two sections alongside each other and mark.

3 Observe the maximum permissible shaft length (LB).

Try to have the maximum possible overlap of the profile tubes. The universal drive shaft must not be pulled out further than half of the sliding tube guard (PU) available when pushed together (LZ).

In the shortest operating length the universal drive shaft halves must not bottom against each other. A minimum clearance (a) = approx. 40 mm must still be available.

Cut the male and the female guard tubes uniformly.

Cut the same length from the male and female profile tubes.

File the cut area to remove any metal burrs, remove any metal filings.

Grease the sliding surfaces of the profile tubes.

Before Operation STORING THE MACHINE Danger!

Never work on the rotary tedder unless the engine is stopped.

– Remove the ignition key!

Hinweis!

Position the rotary tedder on solid horizontal ground only.

• Withdraw spring clip (4), fold down prop stand (3) and secure again using spring clip (4).

• Uncouple the universal joint drive shaft from the tractor and store it on prop stand (3).

PRIOR TO TRANSPORTATION 5 1. Hitch to rotary tedder to the tractor.

2. Connect the PTO drive shaft.

3. Raise the prop stand.

4. Fold rotors together until they lock into engagement.

5. Use lock (5) to secure the left hand front rotor.

Bush (6) of the lock must catch the head of one of the tine bar securing bolts (S).

Before Operation Driving on public roads The applicable laws and regulations must be observed when travelling on public roads!

In the Federal German Republic the “Straßenverkehrszulassungsordnung” (StVZO) applies.

In other countries, different traffic regulations may apply.

Adapt your driving speed to the traffic and road conditions - the max. permissible road speed is 25 km/h. In other countries lower max. permissible road speeds may applie. Reduce your speed when approaching a bend.

Bring rotary tedder into transport position see "Transport position", page 7.2.

The rotary tedder must be fitted ateither side with warning panels in order that its outer contours and sharp edges can be distinguished clearly by other road users.

In the dark or in case of poor visibility the machine must be fitted additionally with lighting equipment.

Ensure all persons stand clear of the danger area when the outer rotors are swung round.

Caution!

Do not switch on the PTO before outer rotors are not completely down.

Working position Danger!

When folding the machine keep clear of the area of the hinge points as there is a danger if personal injury by pinching and crushing.

Keep hands clear of the danger area as long as parts can be in movement.

All adjustments must be made on the right and left hand side of the machine.

Unlock the wheels.

To do this move lever (1) downwards at either side.

When folding the lateral carrier arms turn rotors by hand as necessary to ensure the tine bars are correctly meshing into each other.

(Fig. 1) Important! The leaf spring must be totally engaged and rest against the housing.

When folding the lateral arms turn rotors by hand as necessary to ensure the clutch elements are positioned correctly.

Operation Transport position Attention!

Disengage the PTO and wait for the rotors to be at a complete stop before folding the machine into transport position.

Use height adjusting spindle (7) to move rotors to horizontal position. The spring tines must have maximum ground clearance.

Use latch (8) to lock the adjusting spindle.

(Fig. 4 , 5) Unlock the wheels.

Move up locking lever (1) at either side (the pin must be free).

Unlock leaf spring (5) by pushing it outwards using lever (6).

Move lateral arm to the rear until pin (4) is totally engaged in the housing.

Do not under any circumstances engage the PTO with the VOLTO 770 in transport position.

Caution!

4 It is essential to ensure that pin (4) is engaged correctly. Both levers (1) must be totally folded up.

6 Wheel position The two front wheels are castoring. For road transport the rear pair of wheels must be locked in the inner hole of the segment. When transporting the tedder at high speed on uneven ground it is commendable to lock the central pair of wheels, too.

Operation Varying the spreading angle

:

The spreading angle should always suit the stalk length, the type of crop and its content of moisture.

The spreading range and the spreading height (scatter pattern) can be altered by adjusting the tilt of the rotors relative to the ground. It also depends on the correct spreading angle adjustment how completely the crop is gathered by the tines.

16° spreading angle = increases the spreading range: 8

This adjustment is recommended for handling wet, long-stalked and heavy crops, swaths laid by a mower and hay.

13° spreading angle = increases the gathering range: This adjustment is recommended for handling dry, short-stalked and light crops, forage spread over the field or when operating in windy conditions.

(Fig. 8) To adjust the spreading angle, remove linch pin (9) from eccentric axle (10), turn axle 180° and replace the linch pin.

Operation Tine pitch adjustment Tine support - circular shape The spring tines can be adjustedto different working angles. At the factory tines are adjusted to 0 degree.

Angle can be varied by attaching stop ring (3) (Fig. 11) toone of the two holes available. A further position is possible by turning the ring 180°.

Hole (A) permits the following tine positions: 0 degree (factory adjustment) and +7 degree (stop ring turned 180°).

Hole (B) permits a tine position of -7 degree.

Should be noticed a light windrow formation appear (Fig. 12) the rear-ward pitch can be set to -7 degrees.

Operation Tine support - rectangular shape Tine pitch is set to 0-degree at the factory. The nose (1) serves as a stop for the tines.

(Fig. 13) Should a light windrow formation appear (Fig. 14) the rearward pitch can be set to seven degrees.

Operation Adjusting the working height Use height adjusting spindle (7) to tilt rotors forward until the spring tines are just touching the ground.

Prior to adjusting, it is imperative to stop the tractor engine.

Setting the rotary tedder into operation

• Fold lateral arms to the front.

• Before driving the machine into the crop engage the PTO with the tractor engine running at idling speed and slowly increase the number of revolutions up to the maximum permissible speed.

• Drive the machine into the crop lying on the ground.

• The forward speed depends on the working conditions (ground conditions, density and state of the crop) and should be selected so that all the crop is taken up cleanly by the tines.

• The scatter pattern can be influenced by varying the PTO speed (max. speed = 540 rpm).

Increase the PTO speed when handling heavy crops. Reduce the PTO speed when handling light crops.

Attention!

Make sure P.T.O. safety clutch is not allowed to slip longer than 10 seconds. By extreme angling of the universal drive shaft, the tractor’s P.T.O. shaft should be switched off beforehand.

Check the inclination of the rotors frequently when in operation.

Operation POSSIBILITIES OF USE Field edge clearance The rotary tedder can be set to oblique position by pivoting the wheel axles. This allows to spread the crop to the right or the left when operating along field edges.

To spread the crop away from the field edge lock all running wheels in the left-hand or right-hand bore of the segment (2). This will cause the machine to follow the tractor in oblique position.

Operation OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT Swathing gearbox Installation: Remove the PTO guard from the gearbox of the machine. Remove the plastic cap from the swathing gearbox.

Install PTO guard (1) to the swathing gearbox in accordance with the drawing (Fig. 24).

Push the gearbox on to the drive shaft of the machine and slightly tighten the set screw. Remove the gearbox again. Countersink the gearbox neck a little bit for the set screw.

Install the gearbox. Tighten an lock the set screw.

To make windrows, push the P.T.O. shaft on to the drive stub.

Adjust the ground speed and the P.T.O. speed to ensure that proper windrows are being formed.

Ensuring against the loss of a tine The flexible plastic grips can be easily clamped and removed again. Should a tine break it can be held by the next one.

It doesn’t get lost and can therefore not damage any following machines e. g. - chopper.

The screws are properly tightened when 6 mm of thread shows beyond the hex. nut.

IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Repair work on tyres must only be carried out by professionals using the correct tyre-mounting tools!

Wheels / tyres

Danger!

Always switch off the drive and the tractor engine for troubleshooting, and for repair, maintenance and cleaning work.

Avoid an excessive inflation pressure.

Danger of bursting!

– Remove the ignition key!

– Stand clear of the tyre when inflating.

– Check the air pressure regularly!

Danger!

– Always observe the prescribed inflation pressure, – see Specifications, page 5.1!

Ensure that the rotary tedder is safely supported before undertaking repair, maintenance and cleaning work.

– use suitable stands!

Bolts Check all bolts for tightness and retighten if necessary.

Check that all split pins and roll pins are in place.

Lubrication Observe the oil change intervals and the oil type in the gearbox specified by the manufacturer. Use only good quality grease or oil to lubricate the machine. Clean the grease nipples before applying the grease gun.

Lubricate regularly following the lubrication chart.

The lubrication intervals stated apply to normal service conditions only. Lubricate more frequently if the machine is used in severe conditions.

Occasionally lubricate all joints with oil or grease.

Environment!

Dispose of oil and grease according to regulations!

Guards (safety frame) Danger!

Open guards only with the drive switched off and the engine at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key!

Mount the guards again after all maintenance and repair work.

Check the guards at regular intervals.

Never work on the rotary tedder unless the engine is stopped.

For the gearbox lubrication use only semi-fluid multi-purpose grease K2K in accordance with DIN 51825.

Filling capacity : 2.5 kg (1) = Filler and level check opening

DRIVE SHAFT Service the PTO drive shaft in accordance with the instructions of the PTO drive shaft manufacturer (see operation manual of the manufacturer).

Observe the safety instructions of the manufacturer!

Replace immediately damaged or missing protective tubes, universal drive shaft guards and securing chains.

Protect the PTO drive shaft against the influence of the weather.

After long periods of disuse lubricate the PTO drive shaft again and check its function.

The PTO drive shaft must only be operated when in good state.

SCREW CONNECTIONS 2

Spring tine securing bolts Tighten the bolts (2) securing the tines after the first hour of operation. Then check the bolts occasionsally for tight fit.

(Fig. 2) Check all bolts an nuts again after ten hours of peration and retighten as necessary.

Thereafter check the bolts from time to time and make sure they are tight.

8.2

Maintenance FASTENERS All safety relevant fastening elements such as bolts, screws, pins etc. must be checked regularly for wear and deformation.

If necessary replace fasteners with new components.

TYRES Check tyre pressure frequently .

Tyre pressure – see Specifications, page 5.1.

After each wheel installation, retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours and then check for tightness every 50 operating hours.

END OF SEASON STORAGE 1. Clean all dirt and stalks from the rotary tedder.

2. Clean off grease and dust from the exterior of all bearings.

3. Fill the gearbox with semi-fluid grease up to the prescribed level.

4. Lubricate all grease points thoroughly until the grease protrudes from the bearings (see Lubrication Chart). Run the tedder for a short time.

5. Have the tedder checked for worn or defective parts and repaired immediately if necessary.

6. Remove any rust from bright surface and re-paint damaged paintwork.

7. Paint tyres with a protective-type paint to prevent the rubber from deteriorating.

8. Store the tedder under coverin a dry place where no fertilizers are in storage.
