2 Introduction INTRODUCTION This operator's manual is the original operator's manual. Hereafter, it is referred to simply as the operator's manual.

This manual provides information on the use, setting and servicing of the CLAAS rotary swather.

The advice on the care and servicing should be followed in order to obtain maximum performance and long service.

The assembly and the regular inspection of your machine should be performed by your specialist workshop. Neglect in maintenance and service and incorrect use will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of valuable time.

By correct operation and servicing you can make full use of the technical knowledge and experience with which your machine has been designed.

4 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE The instructions contained in this manual should be read carefully and observed by all persons concerned with the operation, maintenance and inspection of this machine in order to prevent accidents.

Especially the »Safety Instructions« and the »Before Operation« sections should be read with the utmost care and adhered to.

The use of spare parts, accessories and ancillary equipment which are not originally manufactured or not checked and approved by CLAAS, can change the specified design characteristics of the CLAAS machine or can detract from its functional performance with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive safety of the machine and its occupational safety standards (accident prevention).

CLAAS are in no way liable for any damage or personal injury caused through the use of other than original or approved CLAAS parts, accessories and ancillary equipment.

Technical specifications, dimensions and weights are understood with the usual tolerances. CLAAS reserve the right to make changes subsequently as technical developments continue. Responsibility for errors and omissions not accepted.

Front, rear, right and left refer to the direction of travel.

IDENTIFICATION PLATE 1

When ordering spare parts and in any correspondence please state the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2), the type and the serial number of your machine. This will enable your Dealer to always provide you with the correct spare parts.

You will find the identification plate (1) with the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2) on the left front of the longitudinal carrier.

5 Safety Rules Read and observe the operator's manual and the safety instructions prior to operation!

INTENDED USE The CLAAS swather is designed exclusively for professional use in accordance with recognised agricultural practice for the harvesting of fodder plants.

The swather is an agricultural machine designed to be fitted to a tractor / tractor truck licensed / approved by the manufacturer and which is suitable and designed for windrowing fodder plants while travelling over the field.

The term fodder plants is understood to refer to stalk crops such as grass, lucerne and grain straw.

Using a windrowing aggregate, the swather windrows fodder plants which have been mown or tedded and lying on the field.

The swather deposits the fodder plants centrally or to the side ready for further processing.

When travelling on public roads, depending on the applicable road vehicle regulations, the swather can be fitted to the rear of a tractor / tractor truck licensed / approved by the manufacturer and trailed.

The machine may only be used, serviced and repaired by persons who are familiar with the handling of the machine and who have been informed of the hazards involved.

Examples of such incorrect applications of the CLAAS swather are:

• Failure to comply with the procedures described in the operator's manual when carrying out adjustment, cleaning and maintenance operation.

• Remedying problems or carrying out maintenance work with the drives and / or diesel engine running.

• Failure to observe warnings on the machine and in the operator's manual

• Allowing maintenance and repairs to be carried out by persons not trained to perform such work

• Making unauthorised modifications to the machine • Attaching additional equipment which is not licensed / approved

• The use of spare parts other than original CLAAS parts

• Using the machine for stationary applications • Using the machine to windrow material other than fodder plants, for example rubbish

• Using the machine as a scarifier • Using the machine to transport persons • Using the machine to transport goods

Intended use is understood to include compliance with the instructions contained in the operator's manual and with the operating, maintenance and servicing conditions prescribed by the manufacturer.

The owner and all persons using the machine must observe the relevant accident prevention regulations and all other generally recognised rules of safety engineering, occupational health and road safety.

Any use above and beyond this is deemed to be "inappropriate use." The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage resulting from inappropriate use. Responsibility for such use lies exclusively with the user.

For special cases, you can request corresponding information on intended use from CLAAS.

AVOIDABLE INCORRECT APPLICATIONS The machine is not designed for any use above and beyond the intended use, and such use therefore constitutes incorrect application of the machine as defined by the Machinery Directive.

The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage resulting from inappropriate use. Responsibility for such use lies exclusively with the user.

Safety Rules GENERAL SAFETY REGULATIONS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Basic rule: Always check that the machine and the tractor are safe to operate and comply with the road traffic regulations before putting them into operation!

Handling, steering and braking characteristics will be influenced by mounted or trailed machines and counterweights! Therefore, ensure adequate steering and braking power!

When making turns, always allow for the width and / or inertia of the machine!

General information:

Do not put the machine into operation unless all safety devices are fitted and in the protective position!

In addition to the instructions in this operator's manual, comply with the general safety and accident prevention regulations!

Persons must stay out of the working area and danger zone of the equipment!

The warning and instruction decals on the machine provide important recommendations for safe operation; these instructions involve your safety!

Always comply with the local traffic regulations when driving on public roads!

Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions. It will be too late to do so once you have commenced field work!

The user whould wear close-fitting clothing. Avoid wearing loose-fitting garments.

Persons must not be allowed to ride on the equipment during field work or transport!

Always hitch up the machine as prescribed and only attach and secure to the prescribed couplings!

Always position the stands correctly when hitching up and detaching the machine! (Firm stand!)

Pay particular attention when hitching up and uncoupling the machine to and from the tractor!

Always attach counterweights as prescribed and at the points provided!

Observe the permissible transport dimensions!

Check and fit transport equipment such as lighting, warning devices and safety devices!

Operating devices (ropes, chains, linkages etc.) of remotely controlled equipment must be routed in such a way that they cannot trigger unintentional movements in any transport or working positions!

Before driving on public roads, prepare the machine accordingly and secure as prescribed by the manufacturer!

Never leave the operator's platform while the machine is moving!

Always adapt your driving speed to the surrounding conditions! Avoid making sharp turns when driving up and down slopes or across an incline!

Keep out of the rotation and pivoting range of the machine!

Remote-powered (e.g. hydraulically powered) components present a risk of crushing or shearing!

Before leaving the tractor, secure the machine! Lower nat attached equipment to the ground! Stop the engine and remove the ignition key!

Persons must not stand between the tractor and the machine unless the vehicle has been protected against moving or rolling by applying the parking brake and / or fitting wheel chocks!

Attached machines Before attaching the machine to / detaching it from the three-point linkage, move the operating lever to a position in which unintentional raising or lowering is impossible!

When attaching machines to the three-point linkage, the linkage categories of the tractor and the machine must match or corresponding modifications must be made!

There is a risk of injury due to crushing and shearing points in the area of the three-point linkage!

When operating the remote control for the three-point linkage, do not stand between the tractor and the machine!

When the machine is in transport position, always ensure that the tractor three-point linkage is adequately locked to prevent it swinging to the side!

When driving on public roads with the machine raised, the control lever must be locked to prevent unintentional lowering!

Trailed machines Secure equipment against rolling away.

Observe max. permissible loads of the tow jaw coupling, swinging drawbar or hitch!

When using a drawbar, ensure that there is sufficient freedom of movement at the suspension point!

5.2

Safety Rules PTO operation

Hydraulic system

Use only the universal drive shafts prescribed by the manufacturer!

The hydraulic system is under high pressure!

Protective tube and guard of the universal drive shaft and the PTO guard must be fitted and in good condition! Ensure that the universal drive shafts are covered by the guards as prescribed in both transport and working position!

Always disengage the PTO shaft, stop the engine and remove the ignition key before attaching or detaching the universal drive shaft!

When using universal drive shafts with overload or overrrun clutches which are not protected by the safety devices on the tractor, overload or overrun clutches must be installed on the implement side!

Always ensure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and attached!

Attach the safety chain to prevent the power take-off shaft guard from rotating with the drive shaft.

Before engaging the PTO shaft, check that the selected speed and direction of rotation of the tractor PTO shaft match the permissible speed and direction of rotation of the machine!

Before engaging the PTO shaft, ensure that there is no-one inside the machine's danger area!

When connecting up hydraulic cylinders and motors, ensure that the hydraulic hoses are connected correctly!

The hydraulic system of both tractor and machine must be depressurised before connecting the hydraulic hose to the tractor's hydraulics, hydraulic system!

Female and male couplings of hydraulic connections between tractor and machine should be labelled to prevent them being connected up wrongly!

Exchanging the couplings will reverse the functions (e.g. raising/lowering) - danger of accidents!

Inspect hydraulic hose connections regularly, and replace them if damaged or deteriorated! Replacement hose connections must meet the technical requirements specified by the manufacturer of the equipment!

Use suitable aids to prevent injury when checking for leaks!

Fluids (hydraulic oil) escaping under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. Consult a doctor immediately in the event of injury! Danger of infection!

Never engage the PTO shaft while the engine is switched off!

Before performing work on the hydraulic system, lower the machine fully, depressurise the system and stop the engine!

Keep clear of the rotating PTO shaft or universal drive shaft when the PTO is operated!

Tyres

Always disengage the PTO shaft for extreme turning angles or when it is not required!

When working on tyres, ensure that the machine is safely parked and secured against rolling away (wheel chocks)!

Attention! After disengaging the PTO shaft, there is danger due to high-inertia components which run on!

Do not approach the equipment while components are still in motion! Do not start work on the equipment until all movement has stopped!

Never clean, lubricate or adjust the PTO-driven equipment or the universal drive shaft without first disengaging the PTO shaft, stopping the engine and removing the ignition key!

Fitting tyres and wheels requires specialist know-how and the correct tools!

Repair work on tyres and wheels must be carried out by specialist personnel using suitable tools!

Check air pressure regularly! Observe the recommended tyre pressures!

Maintenance

Place the uncoupled universal drive shaft on the bracket provided or secure it with a chain!

Always switch off the drive and stop the engine before performing any repair, maintenance or cleaning work or eliminating malfunctions! Remove the ignition key!

After uncoupling the universal drive shaft, place the guard over the PTO stub shaft!

Wait until the machine has come to a complete stop!

Repair any damage immediately, before starting work with the machine!

5.3

Experience and special assembly tools are required to perform repairs on pretensioned energy storage devices (springs, pressure accumulators etc.). Such repairs must therefore be performed by specialist workshops!

Safety Rules Regularly check that nuts and bolts are tightly seated and tighten them if required!

Before carrying out maintenance operations on the raised machine, ensure that it is securely positioned on suitable supports!

Use suitable tools and wear safety gloves when replacing working parts!

Dispose of oil, grease, and filters in the prescribed manner!

Always disconnect the power supply before performing work on the electrical system!

Safety devices which are subject to wear must be inspected regularly and replaced in good time!

Spare parts must at least meet the technical requirements specified by the equipment manufacturer! This can be ensured, for example, by using original spare parts!

Before carrying out any electrical welding work on the tractor and attached machines, always disconnect the leads from the generator and the battery!

Noise pressure level If the noise pressure level at the driver's ear exceeds 85 dB (A) (see »Specifications«) ear protection must be worn.

DE-COMMISSIONING AND DISPOSAL When the machine or its components reach the end of their service life and are handed over for scrapping, the components must be disposed of in an appropriate manner.

Observe the regulations imposed by the relevant local authorities.

The operating fluids in the machine must be disposed of by special means and must not be allowed to leak into the environment.

For further information on how to dispose of these substances appropriately, contact your local authority, CLAAS workshop or CLAAS customer service.

– Products bearing the symbol (1) must not be disposed of with the household waste when they reach the end of their service life.

– Packaging material should be recycled and not disposed of with household waste.

– Plastics labelled with the material of which they are made, for example PPTV20, should be recycled and not disposed of with household waste.

– Spent batteries contain hazardous substances and must be returned to the retailer, disposed of appropriately or handed in to a waste disposal centre. Do not dispose of spent batteries with household waste.

– Operating fluids such as oils, hydraulic fluids, brake fluid or fuels must be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of accordingly.

Safety instructions SAFETY DECALS WITH WARNING SYMBOLS Safety decals with warning symbols are placed in all danger areas of the machine. The symbols are intended to help the operator to perceive a danger of injury and to prevent accidents.

The location of the decals on the machine and their wording is stated on the following pages.

The CLAAS spare part number is quoted before each description.

The figures in brackets refer to the location of the decals shown in the figures Safety signs that are damaged or cannot be recognized any more must immediately be replaced by new ones.

When parts are replaced that have decals, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

Technical data CALCULATION OF AXLE LOADS, MINIMUM BALLASTING AND TOTAL WEIGHT The front axle of the tractor must always to be loaded with at least 20% of the unladen weight of the tractor.

The mounting of implements on the front or rear three point linkage shall not result in exceeding the maximum permissible weight, the permissible axle loads and the tyre load carrying capacities of the tractor.

Make sure before buying an implement that these conditions are fulfilled by carrying out the following calculations or by weighing the tractor/implement combination.

There is a danger of injury from drives starting up suddenly when working on the machine!

– Turn the tractor motor off and remove the ignition key.

CHECK EVERY TIME PRIOR TO OPERATION 1. Check level of fluid grease or oil in the swath gearbox.

2. Thoroughly lubricate the rotary swather prior to operation.

3. Check bolts for tightness.

4. Check safety devices (e.g. overload clutches, covers of drive parts, ...) for function and correct fit.

5. P.T.O. speed of 540 rpm not to be exceeded.

6. Only engage the tractor P.T.O. at idling speed.

7. After the rotary swather has been hitched up and the universal drive shaft has been engaged, check that the universal drive shaft can move freely by careful lifting and lowering.

8. Use safety chains to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

9. Check that the wheel nuts are tight (tightening torque see “Technical Data”). Check the tyre pressures and correct if necessary “Technical Data”.

10. Check the lighting for correct operation.

11. Before moving off, check the vehicle for loose items being carried. Any parts which could be lost during movement should be fixed down or covered up.

12. Direct persons out of the danger area. If anybody approaches the danger area the rotary swather should be switched off immediately.

13. Never let the rotary swather run unattended.

Prior to operation HITCHING UP Before starting up the swather for the first time make sure that the hitch and the universal drive shaft match the tractor.

Headstock The lower link connection pins (1) can be used on either side. This allows the use of the three point frame for Cat. I and Cat. II. Set the lower links to the same height. Hook the lower link of the tractor into the carrier pin (1) and secure in position with the linch pin.

Restrict the sideways movement of the lower link as much as possible.

Connect the upper link (8) to both the tractor and the machine. Secure with spring pins.

The upper link (8) should be set so that the connection point (7) on the machine, in working position, is higher than the connection point (9) on the tractor.

Prior to operation Universal drive shaft Push the universal drive shaft onto the tractor P.T.O. The overload clutch (slipping clutch) must be mounted on the machine side.

Before using for the first time, check the length of the universal drive shaft when going around corners and when the machine is lifted and lowered.

Danger!

There is a danger of injury from the universal drive shaft coming loose whilst working!

– Check that all locks are securely engaged before starting work with the PTO drive shaft.

Adjusting the universal drive shaft: Pull the universal drive shaft apart and push the two halves onto the P.T.O.s.

Hold the two halves of the shaft next to each other as close as possible, in the working position, and mark the ends.

3 Observe max. operating length (LB). Ensure as much overlap as possible.

The universal drive shaft can only be pulled apart by half the distance of the composed state (LZ) of the existing slider section cover (PU).

However, with the shortest working length, the ends of the drive shaft sections must not touch. There must still be a free sliding distance of (a) = approx. 40 mm.

Shorten the inner and outer guard tubes by the same amount.

Shorten the inner and outer splined sections by the same amount as the guard tubes.

Smooth down cut edges, and carefully remove all swarf and filings.

Grease the splines.

• Set the rotor plate (18) horizontal in relation to the travel direction by lengthening or shortening top link (15) (Fig. 7).

• Using height adjusting crank (16) lower the rotor until the complete crop is raked neatly over the entire working width – see »Height adjustment of the rotary assembly«, page 9.2.

• After the working height adjustment check once more that the rotor plate (18) is horizontal and if necessary re-adjust using top link (15).

A slight rotor tilt to the side ensures better swathlaying and reduces damage to the grass stubble.

Tractors with fixed lower links or hydraulic system without floating position: Lengthen or shorten the top link of the 3-point linkage until pin (19) stays in the centre of slotted hole (20) steht (Fig. 9).

• Before driving into the crop, switch on the tractor PTO shaft while the engine is idling at a low number of revolutions per minute (rpm).

• Increase the rpm to a maximum of 540.

• Choose the driving speed according to crop, land and soil conditions.

• Avoid allowing the overload clutch to operate for more than 10 seconds.

– Disengage the drive mechanism and stop the engine before any maintenance, servicing or cleaning work and before the elimination of malfunctions.

– Always remove ignition key and detach the drive shaft.

Components under tension can get loose unexpectedly and cause serious injury!

– Before the start of assembly work, all components under tension (springs, pressure accumulators etc.) must be released according to instructions.

Danger!

The lifted machine or the rotors can lower inadvertently while repair, maintenance or cleaning work is carried out. Use appropriate supporting devices to secure the lifted machine against lowering!

After each wheel installation, retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours and then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. For the tightening torques see »Technical Data«.

Always observe the prescribed inflation pressure, see »Technical Data«.

Bolts Check all bolts for tightness and retighten if necessary.

Check that all split pins and roll pins are in place.

Lubrication Observe the oil change intervals and the oil quality specified by the manufacturer. For lubrication use only good quality grease or oil. Before applying the grease gun, clean the grease nipples.

Grease all points that require lubrication, observing the intervals specified in the lubrication chart.

The lubrication intervals stated apply to normal service conditions only. Lubricate more frequently if the machine is used in severe conditions.

Environment!

Dispose of used oil and grease according to regulations!

Safety frame Refit the protection frames completely after any maintenance or repair work.

Wheels and tyres Danger!

Damaged tyres can loose air pressure unexpectedly during travel, causing the machine to roll to and fro!

– Check tyres regularly for damage and correct inflation pressure.

– Repair work on tyres must only be carried out by professionals and with correct tools.

• Do not use high-pressure cleaners or steam cleaners to clean cut-out clutches, bearing parts, hydraulic or electrical parts.

– Danger of damage to the parts and rust formation!

• Cleaning with excessive pressure can damage paintwork.

• After cleaning the machine with a high-pressure cleaner, the bearing points must be lubricated before and after washing them!

Then carry out a short test run to expel water which has penetrated the bearing points.

• There should be a bead of grease at the bearing points. This protects the bearing point against the ingress of dirt, plant juices and water.

WINTER STORAGE 1. Remove all crop residues and dirt from the rotary swather. Wash grease and dust from all bearings.

2. Lubricate all grease points thoroughly in accordance with the chart until grease emerges from the bearings. Operate the swather briefly.

3. Check the rotary swather for worn and defective parts and have necessary repairs carried out immediately. Clean rusty areas and repair damaged paint work.

4. Use tyre protective paint to prevent rubber from deteriorating.

5. Store the rotary swather in a dry place away from stored fertilizer.
