This manual is valid for the CLAAS Soybean Cutterbar for Lexion 580 - 510.

It is intended primarily for the machine operator and provides information concerning the use, adjustment and operation of the cutterbar.

For commissioning the Soybean Cutterbar, see the combine harvester operating instructions The advice on care and servicing should be followed in order to obtain maximum performance and long service from the Soybean Cutterbar.

In addition, regular inspections of the machine should be carried out by your CLAAS specialist workshop.

Neglect in maintenance or service, and incorrect use will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of time.

This manual is only valid in conjunction with the combine harvester's operating instructions.

The use of spare parts, accessories and ancillary equipment, which are not originally manufactured by CLAAS, can change the specified design of this CLAAS machine or detract from its functional performance, with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive operational safety of the machine and its occupational safety standards (accident prevention).

CLAAS is in no way liable for any damage or personal injury caused through the use of parts other than original CLAAS parts, accessories, and ancillary equipment.

General information When ordering spare parts, and in all technical queries, the machine number and the corresponding serial number of the cutterbar are to be quoted. This is necessary to ensure that you receive the correct spare parts.

Identification plate The identification plate with the cutterbar's serial number is mounted on the right hand side.

Designated use

Before putting the machine into operation, read the operator's manual and follow the safety precautions.

This cutterbar is designed solely for use in customary agricultural operations (intended use).

Identification of warning and danger signs

Use for any other purpose is considered as being contrary to the designated use. The manufacturer accepts no liability for any damage or injury resulting from such misuse, and the risks are borne solely by the user.

All parts of this manual having to do with your safety or the safe operation of the machine are marked with the following signs. Please pass all safety instructions on to other users, too.

DANGER! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so would cause danger to life and limb to the operator and the people around him.

ATTENTION! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so could result in damage to the machine.

☞ Measures to prevent damage to the machine.

The designated use also includes strict adherence to the conditions of operation, service, and repair as specified by the manufacturer.

The cutterbar should only be operated, serviced and repaired by persons familiar with the cutterbar and acquainted with the relevant safety rules (accident prevention).

Accident prevention regulations, all other generally recognized regulations on safety and occupational health, and road traffic regulations must be observed at all times.

Fitting and retrofitting of ancillary equipment which is not originally manufactured by CLAAS, and, in addition, also modifications and changes may only be carried out with the consent of CLAAS, as any such actions may have considerable adverse effects on the safety and operational function of the machine.

Unauthorised modifications made to the machine will exempt the manufacturer from all liability for any resulting damage or injury.

NOTE! Sign to indicate instructions for a more efficient and economic use of the machine.

ENVIRONMENT! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed in order to avoid damage to the environment.

Danger to the environment is caused by irregular handling and incorrect disposal of toxic material (e.g. old oil).

The warning and instruction signs placed on the combine provide important recommendations for safe operation. These instructions involve your safety – observe them at all times!

General safety and accident prevention regulations 1. In addition to the instructions contained in these Installation and Operating instructions, also observe the general safety and accident prevention regulations.

2. Always comply with local traffic regulations when driving on public roads.

3. Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions. During field work or road travel it is too late!

4. Before starting work, check the cutterbar for loose parts.

5. When working on or around the cutterbar, stop the engine and remove the ignition key.

Hydraulic pipes must be depressurised.

6. Work underneath the cutterbar and the reel only to be undertaken with the cutterbar securely propped up.

Safety rules 7. Fold up the crop dividers when driving on public roads.

8. Removing and fitting knives involves a great risk of personal injury particularly if the cutterbar is misaligned and/or very dirty.

9. Knives, the cutterbar, intake auger and reel etc. cannot be completely shielded by constructional measures due to their function. For this reason, an adequate safety distance must be maintained to these moving elements during operation!

10. Never operate the universal drive shaft without the guard or if the guard is damaged.

11. When carrying a cutterbar during travel on public roads and lanes, the finger bar and/or the crop lifters must be covered.

12. Under no circumstances attempt to service, lubricate or clean the machine or to remedy any operational problems unless the drive is disengaged and the engine stopped. Remove the ignition key!

13. Always replace safety guards and shields after carrying out maintenance work.

14. There is a danger of injury when fitting the cutterbar to the combine harvester!

15. No person must ever be allowed between the combine harvester and cutterbar unless the parking brake is applied and/or the wheels are chocked so that the vehicle cannot start to move on its own.

Observe all further safety precautions contained in the Combine Operator’s Manual.

Safety rules SAFETY DECALS WITH PICTORIALS

Safety decals are attached to the danger zones of the machine. These safety decals help to alert persons to hazards which can cause personal injury. The pictorials provide instructions to avoid the hazard.

These safety signs, their placement on the machine and a brief explanatory text are shown on the following pages.

The CLAAS part number of every decal is stated ahead of the text.

The figure in ( ) refers to the adjacent picture and indicates the correct location of the decal on the machine.

Safety decals that are damaged or cannot be recognized any more must be replaced immediately by new ones.

When parts that have decals are replaced, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

2. Check the oil level in the gearbox, and fill if necessary.

3. Check all safety guards, and position them correctly if necessary.

Removing the transport fixtures Before using the cutterbar for the first time, the braces (T) must be removed on both sides.

Fitting the right-hand cutterbar cylinder For all soybean cutterbars up to 6.00 m, the right-hand cutterbar cylinder (if there are only two cutterbar cylinders) must always be fitted to the outer location (R).

COUPLING SECTION FOR MACHINES WITH CLAAS CONTOUR (without transverse control) The coupling section (1) is required with flexible cutter beams and soybean sensors, and with rigid cutter beams and grain sensor bands.

Fitting the coupling section DANGER! Raise the fitted cutterbar completely, and secure with the safety lock on the left-hand cutterbar cylinder.

Push the coupling section (1) onto the control shaft in the middle, and fasten in position using the two hexagon bolts (2).

Before raising the cutterbar, make sure that the latch (V) is in the parking position.

1 Drive the combine harvester into the cutterbar until the location spigots (F) of the hydraulic cylinders on the feeder housing are located underneath the location holes (G) of the top cutterbar crossbeam.

CAUTION! When raising the cutterbar, you must select the correct inclination of the cutterbar. For this, see (Fig. 4)

Raise the cutterbar using the machine hydraulics. (Fig. 2, 3) Insert the latch (V) in the clamping position.

ATTENTION! The latch (V) must be inserted correctly, otherwise the cutterbar can drop.

Secure the pins with spring clips (F).

Fitting the quick-release coupling Fitting the quick-release coupling. Remove the dust guard (T).

Unscrew the quick-release coupling (K) from the inclined conveyor and attach it to the cutterbar.

Operation - Cutterbar ADJUSTING THE CUTTERBAR Cutterbar skids The adjustable cutterbar skids are located in the central hole (M) in the factory.

The setting depends on the size of the tyres and the ground conditions.

Soybean setting: When setting the skids, ensure that the movement range of the mower head is not limited.

Grain setting: 1

With a cutting height of 90 mm, the minimum skid ground clearance of 10 to 30 mm must be maintained.

The skid ground clearance must not exceed 50 mm, since otherwise there may be damage to the crop lifter.

Operation - Cutterbar The minimum separation between the cutter beam and the reel can be adjusted if required using the setting screws (B).

ATTENTION! If the setting is too small, damage to the knife and the reel tines can occur!

Reel tines For normal harvesting conditions, a vertical setting of the reel tines, or slightly forward of vertical, is best.

HCC reel: In case of heavy down crops or at short height, the reel tines can be adjusted to grip the crop using the lever (H). For this, release the clamping screw (K).

After adjustment, retighten the clamping screw (K).

If the grip setting of the tines is too strong, wind-up on the reel can result.

Operation - Cutterbar Horizontal reel adjustment (electro-hydraulic) Using the horizontally arranged double-acting hydraulic cylinders (H), the reel position can be matched to the crop conditions from the operator's seat.

Wear gloves to avoid cutting injuries when removing or fitting the knife.

Take particular care when retracting the knife if the cutter beam is bent or heavily contaminated!

A spare knife (E) can be carried in the holder on the cutterbar.

(Fig. 8) Removing the knife: Move the knife to the left dead point.

Release the hexagon bolts (N) and remove the knife.

Fitting the knife: Push the knife into the cutter beam and screw the knife head to the wobble drive using the hexagonal bolts (N).

Standard knife system The system is intended for general use with soybeans and grain.

Operation - Cutterbar Standard knife system settings The wobble drive should be set so that dimension (Z) has a play of 2.0 mm to the back of the knife at the dead points of the wobble lever.

The dimension (Y) between the knife and the lower finger must be 0.5 mm.

In order to adjust, release the clamping screw (K) and adjust the height of the wobble lever (G) accordingly.

After adjustment, retighten the clamping screw (K).

Release the bolts (H) on the stop. Then set the distance (W) between the back of the knife and stop (H) to about 1.0 mm. Retighten the bolts.

The clearance between the knife and the upper finger should be adjusted by using spacers so that the dimension (X) is 0.4 to 1.5 mm.

SG3/S and SG3 knife systems The SG3/S system, with double fingers without web, is intended for use under wet harvest conditions of soybeans and grain.

Release the bolts (H) on the stop. Then set the distance (W) between the back of the knife and the stop (H) to about 1.0 mm. Retighten the bolts.

It facilitates a high cutting output with low blockage rates when the cutting height is low.

The clearance between the knife and the upper finger should be adjusted by using spacers so that dimension (X) is 0.75 to 1.25 mm.

The SG3 system, with double fingers with web, is intended for use in stony harvest conditions.

The maximum forward traverse speed is somewhat less with this system than that with the SG3/S system.

SG3/S and SG3 knife system adjustment The wobble drive should be set so that the dimension (Z) has a play of 2.0 mm to the back of the knife at the dead points of the swing lever.

The dimension (Y) between the knife and the lower finger must be 0 to 0.5 mm. In order to adjust, release the clamping screw (K) and adjust the height of the wobble lever (G) accordingly. After adjustment, retighten the clamping screw (K).

Adjusting the clearance to the bottom plate S

The distance between the flutes (S) of the intake auger and the cutterbar bottom plate should be about 15 mm.

The height of the intake auger can be adjusted using the setting screws (T) on the left and right-hand sides of the cutterbar. Release the retaining screws (H) on both sides before any adjustment.

After adjusting, all bolts and nuts must be retightened.

The feed finger control (F) can be adjusted using the lever (B) after releasing the bolt (K).

Insert the lever (B) into the third hole from the bottom (standard setting). After adjustment, retighten the bolt (K).

Damaged fingers (F) are to be replaced by new ones immediately.

Never adjust the slip clutch so tightly that it becomes blocked and ceases to operate as a safety device!

Changing the inclination of the cutter bar

Before adjusting the cutter beam, remove the bolts (S) (if present).

By moving the washers (E), the inclination of the cutter beam can be altered.

The number of washers (E) should be considered in conjunction with the tyres. See (Fig. 16) R = Guide arms and skids

CAUTION! With both skid versions (R and L) always maintain the same number of washers. With version (L) there must always be one more washer fitted than with version (R).

If used for grain with a rigid cutter beam, retighten the bolts (S).

With the special tyres 35.5L-32, use a longer bolt and two extra washers.

Crop dividers

Adjusting the divider points

Three versions of crop divider are available:

The minimum distance between the crop divider tips is (X) = 80 mm from the ground.

1. short crop divider (A) 2. long crop divider (B) 3. long crop divider with insert (C) Short crop divider (A) and long crop divider (B) can be used basically for soybeans and grain.

In shorter height crops, the short crop divider (A) is to be preferred.

Three other positions for larger separations are possible on lever (Y).

For the various crop divider tips, the spring cylinder (F) is located in the positions (A, B or C).

In the case of down grain or matted material, the long crop divider (B)has its advantages.

As soon as the dividing of crops no longer works, instead of ripping the straws from the ground, the long crop divider (B) should be used.

In the case of very high soybean crops or heavy weed contamination, the long crop divider with insert (C) should be used. The insert prevents reel wind-up in the area of the outer star.

Operation - Cutterbar Basic crop divider setting Adjusting the crop divider: The adjusting plates (P) on the right and left-hand side of the crop divider are to be set so that the reel does not collide.

20 Adjusting the spring cylinder Basic setting (X) = 525-2 mm With the locknut (K) released, adjust the spring cylinder on the cylinder screw (Z) so that the crop divider floats along the ground.

Retighten the locknut (K).

Removing the soybean sensor Remove screws (A and B) and fold down the skids.

Then fold the skids up, and screw tight.

Adjusting the sensor actuating levers to the end stops To make the adjustment, first raise the cutterbar completely.

Topmost position of the sensor band (T): Lift the sensor band up to the stop.

At the topmost position of the sensor band, the distance (X) between the control lever and the stop must be about 1 mm.

(Fig. 8, 9) Loosen the screws (K), and make the adjustment using the angle lever (L) and the fixing screws (B).

Bottom position of the sensor band (T): At the bottom position of the sensor band, the distance at (Y) between the control lever and the stop must also be about 1 mm.

For this, the limiting chains of the sensor band (T) should be adjusted accordingly.

Subsequently, all bolts must be re-tightened.

Operation - Cutterbar Arresting the cutter bar Attach threaded rod (G) to the control arm with the pin (F). Release the locknut (N).

Raise the cutter beam by tightening the nut (M) until a resistance is felt. Retighten the locknut.

All the rear locking screws (S) to be screwed into the contour sensing arms of the cutter beam and tightened.

Maintenance DRIVE BELTS / DRIVE CHAINS Removing the knife drive belt (40) DANGER! Stop the engine and switch off the battery isolator.

Open the protective flap.

R

Slacken the drive belt (40): Retract the locknut (K) completely.

Manufacture a U-piece with the given dimensions, and push it onto the cylinder tube (R). Secure the U-piece with a spring pin.

U

Tighten the locknut (K) until the V-belt is slackened. If the V-belt cannot be slackened sufficiently, the cylinder tube (R) must be turned back slightly.
