This operating manual for the Rollant 240/250/254/255 round baler (applicable from 72505431/74800011/ 75400011/74900011) is primarily intended for the machine operator; it provides information on the use of the round baler, including its settings and operation.

Please comply with the guidelines for correct care and maintenance of your round baler, to ensure permanent availability and a long service life of the round baler.

Immediately after the harvest you should have your round baler inspected by your CLAAS workshop within the framework of these winter storage recommendations. Deficiencies in maintenance or incorrect operation lead to a drop in performance and result in time losses.

Use the experience and latest knowledge in long blade harvest implemented in this bale wrapper by correct operation and thorough maintenance, and your round baler will always produce excellent results.

General notes ROAD TRAFFIC

The vehicle driver must always have a copy of the type approval (ABE), issued by the Federal Office for Motor Vehicles (KBA), and two wheel chocks available or, in individual cases, the type approval.

When driving on public roads towing agricultural or forestry equipment, all conditions and notes stipulated under letter C in the copy of the type approval (ABE) issued by the Federal Office for Motor Vehicles (KBA) or listed in the type approval in individual cases must be observed.

In particular, no bale must be inside the round baler.

If parts of the round baler, the constitution of which is clearly specified or the operation of which may cause hazards for other road users, are subsequently modified, the type approval will become invalid and a new type approval must be applied for. For this purpose the agricultural or forestry equipment must be presented to the responsible Technical Standards Authority (e.g.

MoT) for issuing an expertise (§ 19 Abs. 2 StVZO).

If you are in doubt whether this is the case, please consult us as the manufacturer.

If the round baler is towed by a tractor, the following items must be connected: - The cable for illumination.

- The cable for electric power supply.

Before starting to drive check especially: - the connection between tractor and baler - that the illumination is in proper condition.

If the license plate given to the vehicle owner for one his tractors is concealed by hitching up the baler, attach a picture of this plate, including its illumination, onto the baler.

The provisions of road traffic regulations may differ in individual countries.

The maximum speed under the road traffic regulations for the country of operation must be observed. However the hitched baler is designed to travel at a maximum speed of 40 km per hour (25 mph). It is not permissible to exceed that speed.

This is absolutely necessary in order to avoid wrong spare parts deliveries.

Identification plate (baler) The identification plate with the machine number is fastened to the right hand sidewall of the machine above the wheel.

The round baler has been solely designed for normal use in agricultural applications. This machine is most suitable and has been designed for picking up and compacting stalks from the ground (intended use).

In these operating instructions we have marked all information concerning your safety and the safety of the machine with the following symbols. Pass all safety information on also to other users.

Any other use is considered as unintended. The manufacturer will not assume liability for damage resulting from such unintended use, in such a case the user bears the risk.

The intended use includes also the adherence to the operating, maintenance and repair instructions specified by the manufacturer.

The round baler must only be used, serviced and repaired by persons who are fully conversant with the machine and who have been instructed about the dangers and risks.

All applicable accident prevention regulations as well as other generally accepted rules concerning health and safety as well as road traffic must be strictly applied.

Unauthorized changes to the round baler exclude any liability of the manufacturer for damage resulting thereof.

6. Keep the round baler clean to avoid the risk of fire!

4.1.1

Concerning safety 7. Before setting off or starting operation check the immediate vicinity around the machine (children). Ensure sufficient visibility.

8. Riding on the round baler during work or transport is prohibited 9. The round baler may only be accessed when it is at standstill and with the tractor engine shut down.

10. Maintain cleanliness! Clean every day in order to ensure that the anti-skid coating on the platform is functioning correctly and to prevent skidding accidents.

11. Hitch the round baler up as instructed and fasten it only at the specified devices.

12. Position the supports correctly before hitching and unhitching the machine (stability).

13. Take care of squashing and shearing points when operating the support device.

14. Special care must be taken when hitching and unhitching the round baler to and from the tractor.

15. Observe the permitted axle loads and total weights.

16. Observe the permitted transport dimensions.

17. Check and install the transport equipment, such as lighting, warning devices and possible guards and safety installations.

18. Control installations (electrical remote control etc.) for remote control facilities must be routed in such a way, that they cannot initiate unintended movements in any transport and working position.

19. Always match the travel speed to the environmental conditions. Avoid sudden driving of curves when driving uphill, downhill or across a slope.

20. Driving performance, steering and braking abilities are effected by the attached round baler. You must therefore ensure sufficient steering and braking ability.

21. When driving in curves consider the centrifugal mass of the round baler.

22. Operate the round baler only with all guards and safety installations properly installed and in position.

23. Before starting work check the round baler for loose or loaded items.

4.1.2

24. On the ROTO CUT version make sure that no cutting or blank knives are on the round baler or in the twine box. Cutting and blank knives must only be stored on the blank knife holder.

25. Standing in the working and danger area is prohibited.

26. Do not stand in the turning and swashing range of the round baler.

27. Components operated by external power (e.g. hydraulic) have squashing and shearing points.

28. Wrapping material (twine, foil, nets etc.) must only be loaded when the tractor engine is shut down and the ignition key is pulled out.

29. During operation keep a sufficient safety distance to the intake elements, such as pick-up etc., because these cannot be fully secured, because of their function.

30. Rectify functional faults on turning and swashing elements only after shutting the engine down and removing the ignition key.

31. The low clamp serves as a protective device and must never be removed during operation. It may be removed only if the baler is blocked, and then only when the tractor engine is switched off.

32. On slopes place the bales down so that they cannot roll away.

33. Persons may be highly endangered when opening and closing the tailgate; keep a safe distance.

34. When working on the opened tailgate and inside the pressing chamber close the shut-off valve on the left hand side of the machine. The shut-off levers must point to the rear. Shut the tractor down and pull the ignition switch off.

35. On public roads the round baler must not be driven with a filled pressing chamber.

36. Before leaving the tractor shut the engine down and pull the ignition key out. Apply the hand brake of the tractor, secure the round baler with wheel chocks against rolling and close the parking brake.

37. No persons shall remain between tractor and round baler, unless the vehicle is properly secured against rolling by applying the parking brake and/or placing wheel chocks under the wheels.

38. The permissible highest speed* of 25 km/h (15,5 miles/h) must not be exceeded. *depending on country

Concerning safety Hitched machines 1. Secure a parked round baler against rolling.

2. Observe the max. permitted tongue load of the towing hitch, trailer coupling ring or hitch.

3. In Germany the round baler can only be driven with a type approved draw bar in the towing hitch.

4. In Italy the round baler must only be driven with a type approved slewable trailer coupling ring.

5. For safety reasons in road traffic the round baler must only be hitched to tractors with a structural weight that is identical with the weight of the round baler (see "Technical Data").

6. For safety reasons in road traffic the round baler must only be hitched to tractors with a structural weight that is at least two times the weight of the round baler (see "Technical Data").

Power take-off operation (only for machines operated by power take-off shaft) 1. Only propshafts specified by the manufacturer must be used.

2. Protection tube and protection funnel for the propshaft as well as a power take-off shaft protection must be installed and should be absolutely perfect condition.

3. When using propshafts ensure compliance with the specified tube overlap in transport and working position.

4. Installation and removal of the propshaft only with the power take-off shaft switched off, the engine shut down and the ignition switch pulled out.

5. When using propshafts with overload or overriding clutches, which are not covered by the safety installations on the tractor, such overload or overriding clutches must be installed on the machine.

6. Always ensure correct assembly and securing of the propshaft.

7. Secure the propshaft guard against travelling by attaching the chain.

8. Before activating the power take-off shaft make sure that the selected speed and sense of rotation of the tractor's power take-off shaft complies with the permissible speed and sense of rotation of the baler.

9. Before activating the power take-off shaft make sure that no persons are inside the danger zone of the machine.

10. Do not activate the power take-off shaft while the engine is shut down.

11. When working with the power take-off shaft no persons must remain in the area of the rotating power take-off or propshaft.

12. Always switch the power take-off shaft off when working with excessive angles or if it is not needed.

13. After switching the power take-off shaft off there is a danger caused by the afterrunning gyrating mass. During this time do not come too close to the round baler. Work may only be performed after it has stopped completely.

14. Cleaning, lubrication or adjustment on power take-off driven machines or on the propshaft must only be performed with the power take-off shaft switched off, the engine shut down and the ignition key pulled out.

15. Store the decoupled propshaft in the holder provided for this purpose.

16. After disassembling the propshaft plug the protection sleeve over the power take-off shaft end.

17. Repair any damage before starting to work with the round baler.

Hydraulic system 1. The hydraulic system is under high pressure.

2. The hydraulic system can get very hot and can cause injuries.

3. When connecting hydraulic cylinders make sure the hydraulic hoses are connected as specified.

4. When connecting the hydraulic hoses of the round baler to the tractor make sure that the hydraulic system is depressurized on both the tractor side as well as the baler side.

5. On connections for hydraulic functions between tractor and round baler coupling sockets and plugs should be marked, so that operating errors are ruled out. Mixing up of connections will reverse the function (e.g. up / down) danger of accident!

6. Check hydraulic hoses at regular intervals and replace them if damaged or aged. Replacement hoses must comply with the technical requirements of the equipment manufacturer.

4.1.3

Concerning safety 7. There is always the danger of hydraulic hoses bursting.

8. When searching for leaks use appropriate means, because of the risk of injury.

9. Fluids emerging under high pressure (hydraulic oil) can penetrate the skin and cause severe injury. In case of injury call for medical advice danger of infection!

10. Before starting work in the hydraulic system depressurize the system and shut the engine down.

11. Repairs in the hydraulic system must only be performed by CLAAS expert workshops.

12. The tractor must be fitted with an oil cooler.

Tires 1. When working on tires make sure that the round baler is safely parked and secured against rolling (wheel chocks) 2. Assembling tires and wheels requires sufficient knowledge and proper assembly tools!

3. Repair work on tires and wheels must only be performed by qualified personnel and the use of appropriate tools!

4. Whenever assembling wheels retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. Tightening torques see "Technical Data".

7. As far as safety installations are subjected to wear, these must be checked at regular intervals and replaced in due time.

8. Spare parts must at least meet the technical requirements specified by the equipment manufacturer. This guaranteed e.g. when using genuine spare parts.

Working noise of machines, Information "D" The noise emission values were measured acc. to method 2 - sound wall - appendix 1 to "Working noises on agricultural machines", AIC 1986/117 (REV) - Authority for Health and Safety.

The noise level of the CLAAS ROLLANT 240/250/ 255 round baler is 87 dB (A) in the following conditions: Measured outside on a 1m2 sound wall, mounted to the back of the tractor cabin.

Maintenance 1. Repairs, maintenance and cleaning work as well as the rectification of functional faults must generally be performed with the drive system switched off and the tractor engine shut down.

Pull the ignition key out.

2. When performing maintenance work under the raised tailgate secure it against dropping down.

3. Check the tightness of nuts and bolts at regular intervals, retighten if necessary.

4. Always use appropriate tools and wear gloves to change work tools!

5. Dispose of oils, grease and filters according to applicable regulations.

6. Always disconnect the electric supply before performing electric welding or starting work in the electric system. Pull all modules out.

Design and working principle

Design and working principle Transmission of power The baler is driven by a wide angle universal drive shaft with a PTO speed of 540 rpm* or 1000 rpm*.

The tractor end of the universal drive shaft is fitted with a wide angle universal joint. The machine end of the shaft is fitted with a free-wheeling device and an overload clutch or shear bolt*. *Optional equipment

Pick-up The pick-up gathers the crop tidily. The crop guard or baffle plate ensures uniform intake. The crop gathered by the pick-up is conveyed to the center by lateral feed augurs and then taken up by the rotor, i.e. rapid removal from the pick-up.

Crop guard The crop guard is located above the pick-up and assists in the intake of the crop.

Baffle plate 1

The baffle plate prevents the pick-up from entraining short stalks, windrow, and aftermath.

Roller crop guard The roller crop guard guarantees an even feed of the rotor even with unfavourable harvesting conditions, uneven swaths and short crops.

Cutting unit (ROLLANT 250/254/255 RC) The cutting unit cuts the crop to lengths of approx.

70 mm before it is fed into the bale chamber.

Design and working principle Rotor backwinding unit (ROLLANT 240/250/254/255) Blockages in the bale chamber can be removed by reversing the rotor (See section on "Manual rotor reverse device").

Hydraulic rotor reverse device (ROLLANT 254/255 with control panel/Claas Communicator) The rotor can be hydraulically reversed to clear blockages.

Hydraulic rotor reverse device from tractor (ROLLANT 250/254/255) The rotor can be hydraulically reversed to clear blockages.

Bale chamber The bale chamber is filled with loose crop by means of the rotor of the cutting device and/or the feed rake.

The swinging section is located at the upper part of the baling chamber. When bale compaction starts it rises up and into the bale compaction chamber and thus begins the rotation and compression of the bale at an early stage as the chamber is filled (not for Rollant 240).

The material rotates inside the bale chamber, made up of 16 steel rollers and is compressed layer by layer into a round bale.

The round bale is then compressed from inside to outside.

The swinging section increases the pressure as it presses on the surface of the bale and moves outwards as the diameter of the bale increases (not for Rollant 240).

Wrapping When the bale has the required density, it is automatically wrapped with net or twine. With net wrapping, »automatic wrapping« or »manual wrapping« operating modes can be chosen. The bale is ejected into the field after the tailgate opens.

Design and working principle Bale discharge ramp The bale discharge ramp is equipped with a warning device. A sensor sounds a warning signal and the control lamp on the control box lights up. On CCT models the control terminal displays the bale discharge.

The round bales may be moved or loaded with front-end loaders or suitable rear-mounted loaders.

Storage of round bales Bales produced by the CLAAS ROLLANT 240/250 and 250/254/255 RC are to a great degree protected from the effects of the weather. Bales wrapped in netting are particularly well protected. Even very heavy rain will penetrate the bale only to a minor degree.

Before starting operation CHECK AND OBSERVE BEFORE STARTING OPERATION 1. Remove or unpack all parts fastened with wire and/ or packed with the machine.

2. On the ROTO CUT version withdraw dummy knives and dummy knife holder from the twine box. Install dummy knife holder on the platform.

3. For the use of the round baler the tractor must be equipped with a double-acting control valve and two hydraulic ports with quick couplings.

4. An additional single-acting control valve with quick-release coupling must be available for the hydraulic-operated pick-up and to engage and disengage the knives (ROLLANT 250/254/ 255 RC).

5. For standard balers with hydraulic rotor reverse, an additional double-acting control valve with quick-release coupling is required.

6. For balers with CCT, a single-acting control valve with quick-release coupling and a quick-release coupling socket (included in delivery) is required, so that oil can return to the hydraulic tank without pressure. If necessary re-equip the tractor.

7. Attach the backflow line and the oil pressure line.

8. Check all the connections for seal.

9. The speed of the power take-off shaft must be 540 rpm or 1000 rpm.

10. Engage the tractor power take-off shaft only at low idle speed.

11. When baling with the counterweight coupling (check the model). Check for existence and seating of the bushing in the towing eye.

12. Attach the round baler to the trailer coupling ring of the tractor.

Hitch up only balers with type approved draw bar to the towing hitch.

15. After hitching up the round baler and connecting the propshaft check whether the propshaft is free to move by carefully driving right and left hand turns.

16. The most favourable initial position of the pick-up drum is 20 to 30 mm between teeth and ground.

In order to avoid damage to the supporting wheels of the pick-up, these should be slightly raised when working on hard stubbles.

17. In order to establish the electric power supply for the round baler connect the 2-pole plug to the socket on the tractor.

If the tractor is not fitted with a 2-pole socket, this should be retrofitted.

The cable with the 25 A pendant fuse, which is available under spare parts number ET.-Nr. 011 708.0, must be connected directly to the positive and negative pole of the tractor battery.

If the tractor is equipped with a 24 V starting system this cable must only be connected to the battery that is joint to frame ground. Fuses with a rating > 25 A are not permitted.

18. Connect the 7-pole plug for the travel light to the socket on the tractor and to the round baler.

19. Attach the connection cable on the control box or the control panel to the 13-pin plug connector on the round baler.

20. Attach the control box or control panel or Claas Communicator on the tractor at a position within reach of the driver.

21. Close the tailgate before using the baler.

22. As a measure to avoid crumbling losses when working with very dry and brittle baling material it may be necessary to work with a low power take-off shaft speed. When working with thin swaths it may be necessary to increase the drive speed.

13. Bring the parking jacks to the transportation setting

23. Avoid idle drives with the power take-off shaft running.

14. Secure the propshaft guard against travelling by attaching the chains.

26. Whenever assembling wheels retighten the wheel bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. Tightening torques see »Technical Data«.

Assembly of wheels is only permitted when using lifting gear of appropriate load bearing capacity for the total weight of the respective round baler typew 27. Check tension and condition of the chains.

28. Check the oil level in the angular drives.

29. Check the oil level in the chain lubrication tank.

30. Do not let the baler run unattended.

Always proceed very carefully when hitching and unhitching the baler to/from the tractor.

To avoid damage to the propeller shaft and the drive, it is essential to be aware of the precise hitch dimensions to the tractor. To ensure safety while driving, the coupling must be adjusted with the counterweight (see section on "Shortening the propeller shaft").

The maximum travel round bends is defined by the length - when telescoped in - of the propeller shaft "L".

Before starting operation Universal drive shaft with taper lock The CC taper lock creates a strong connection, completely without backlash between the yoke of the universal drive shaft and the PTO shaft.

The built-in spring ensures an optimum compensation of tolerances. Any subsequent slackness caused by the settling of the hub and the shaft is automatically compensated for.

Fitting the drive shaft with the CC taper lock Unscrew the taper lock (K).

Slide the universal drive shaft onto the gearbox input shaft until the borehole for the taper lock and the notch on the PTO stub shaft are aligned.

Screw in the taper lock (K) and tighten it.

Before starting operation Connecting the universal drive shaft to the tractor (for swinging drawbar hitching) Adjust the swinging drawbar of the tractor so that the hitch point is located under the joint of the wide angle universal drive shaft. Now hook up the baler.

Slide the universal drive shaft onto the splined PTO stub of the tractor until the locking pin (T) engages correctly in the groove of the PTO stub.

Always follow the maintenance regulations (see "Lubrication schedule" section).

After cutting the sections of the universal drive shaft to length, the cut surfaces must be deburred.

After adaptation, connect the universal drive shaft to the splined PTO stub of the tractor, making sure that pin (T) locks into position correctly.

Fasten the chains (G) of the universal drive shaft guards (E) to the drawbar and to the tractor with their hooks.

The chain (K) is used to hold the universal drive shaft when the baler is not connected to the tractor.

Before connecting the universal drive shaft, unhook the chain (K) so that the universal drive shaft can move freely.

Adjusting the working height of the pick-up (pick-up without gauge wheels) Lower the pick-up until the tines clear the ground by 20 to 30 mm. Lock the telescoping tube on the hydraulic cylinder (M) with pin (E) accordingly.

If foreign objects, such as stones, hardwood, etc., are encountered, the springs (F) allow the knives to deflect.

The knives return to their original positions once the foreign object has been passed.

Blanking knives Knives which have been removed must be replaced by blanking knives to prevent the crop from being forced through the knife slots. When harvesting on very stony ground, for example, we recommend replacing half the knives with blanking knives.

Adjusting the baling pressure with a pivoting segment The ROLLANT 250/254/255 is equipped with a pivoting segment which also controls the baling pressure. Apart from using the hydraulic baling pressure adjustment, pressure can be increased or decreased by adjusting the springs of the pivoting segment on both sides of the machine.

The baler leaves the factory with a normal operation setting. This means that the springs are tensioned which will cause a high bale density.

For crops which need additional drying in the centre of the bale (e.g. hay), or which are very dry or brittle, it is a good idea to reduce the spring tension.

To set the retainer (F) higher for large amounts of feed, the side plates (A) 836163.0 (in the accessory pack) must be fitted.

For machines with a feed rake drive, delivery also includes the stops 845 037.0 (net wrapping) and the stops 838 789.0 (twine- and net wrapping). The assembly of the stops depends on the type of wrapping. The assembly is only necessary if there are problems with the bale start.

Operation Delay time for automatic net wrapping The delay time is the time between completing the bale and the start of the automatic net wrapping sequence. This time allows the operator to bring the tractor and the baler to a complete stop.

Operation Press the tailgate switch, when the tailgate is closed, until the illuminated push button switch (3) is lit up, and the warning tone is sounding.

Now measure the time until the illuminated push button switch (3) goes out. Once the delay sequence is complete the solenoid clutch for the wrapping sequence will be engaged (audible).

The delay time can be reset, should this be required.

(Fig. 9, 10) 9 Setting the delay time The delay time can be set from minimum 1 second to maximum 10 seconds.

Note!

A watch with a seconds hand is needed to set the delay time. If more than 10 seconds are set, the baler changes to the »manual net wrapping« operating mode.

Read the following steps carefully. Once read through, follow the steps one by one: 1. Switch off the control box.

2. Press pushbutton switches (3) and (4) at the same time and keep pressing.

3. Switch on the control box.

4. The pushbutton switch (3) starts to light up. Now set the delay time you require (learn mode).

5. As soon as the required delay time is set, let go of both buttons (3) and (4).

6. Switch off the control box and then switch it back on.

The baler will now operate on the new delay time.

The light in pushbutton switch (3) only goes on during learn mode and goes out after 10 seconds.

2. Press pushbutton switches (3) and (4) at the same time and keep pressing.

3. Switch on the control box.

If the baler is overloaded or the rotor is blocked, the cam-type cut-out clutch (N) will shut off the drive.

If the cam-type cut-out clutch is activated, proceed as follows: 1. Stop the tractor and switch off the PTO shaft (cut-out clutch will re-engage).

2. Disengage the cutting knives (ROLLANT 250/254/255 RC). This is done by lowering the pick-up completely. Put the tractor’s control valve in the floating position (see Tractor Operator’s Manual).

3. Switch the PTO shaft back on again and engage at low speed.

However, if the cam-type cut-out clutch disengages again immediately, switch the PTO off again and repeat the procedure. Check the baler for foreign objects and remove them.

Switch the knife on the cutting unit back on.

Operation Rotor reverse, manual (ROLLANT 240/250/254/255 with rotor and standard controls) The rotor can be manually reversed by about 90° with lever (H) to clear a blockage.

Danger!

Disengage the PTO shaft and remove the ignition key. Always wear gloves when removing blockages – Risk of injury!

3. Attach the lever to shaft (W) and push it as far as it will go.

5. Back up the baler, remove the crop or foreign object as necessary.

6. Retract the hydraulic cylinder completely.

7. Close the shut-off valve on the hydraulic oil hose for rotor reverse.

8. Engage the PTO and start baling.

9. With ROLLANT 250/254/255 RC re-engage the cutting knives. Lift the pick-up to do this.

2. Fully raise the pick-up using the tractor hydraulics.

Operation Starting operation of the round baler Attention!

The control box must be switched off before starting the tractor engine.

Turn knob (N) of the emergency stop switch in direction of arrow (clockwise) to switch the control box on.

When the baler is ready for operation the control lamp (K) lights up after approximately 3 seconds.

Drive the round baler up to the swath and activate the power take-off shaft.

Broad and thick swaths ensure uniform filling of the baling chamber and therefore perfectly shaped round bales.

When working with thin swaths it is recommended to “oscillate” when driving. (Convey swaths always approx. 15 m at right and left into the baling chamber.)

Operation Automatic wrapping Note!

If control light (K) lights up or flashes quickly after starting operation of the round baler, the round baler is not ready for automatic wrapping.

Before binding correct the causes.

Possible causes: – the tailgate is open, – the ramp is pressed down, – the twine binding levers are not in the home position.

Binding and ejecting bales Once the bales have reached the set compression, the binding procedure automatically begins.

The stop symbol (S) lights up and the signal generator (A) emits a sound. The error message control lamp (K) flashes.

The tractor must now be stopped within the delay period until binding starts.

The binding twine or the net is then caught up by the rotating bale and drawn in.

Note!

The delay time is the time period between completion of the bale and the start of automatic wrapping.

As soon as the binding process has finished the stop symbol light (S) goes out.

For twine binding, the end of the binding procedure is also notified by the fact that the twine guide lever has stopped.

For net binding, the end of the binding process can also be detected by the fact that the movement of roll of netting ceases and the blade can be heard as it cuts off the net.

Operation Ejection of bale: The tailgate is opened by operation of the hydraulic control valve.

The bale leaves the baling chamber via the bale ejector (ramp).

As soon a the ramp is forced down by the bale, the stop sign in control box (S) flashes and signal horn (A) sounds.

Once the bale has left the ramp, both the stop sign in control box (S) and signal horn (A) go out.

The tailgate is closed by operation of the hydraulic control valve.

Once the tailgate is closed (can be audibly recognized), the control light “fault” (K) will go out.

The next bale can be pressed.

Early wrapping can be initiated by pressing push button (5) up to just before the start of automatic wrapping (twine or net).

Delaying the wrapping process This method is applied if, e.g. the end of the swath can be reached by this delay.

Delayed wrapping can be initiated by pressing and holding push button (6) up to just before the start of automatic wrapping (twine or net).

Wrapping will then automatically start after releasing push button (6).

Note!

The fully filled baling chamber will force the tailgate approx. 5 cm open. This actuates a switch which then starts the automatic wrapping operation.

1. Press and hold down the pressure switches (5) and (6), and only then switch on the operating box; this switches to learning mode.

The operating box is in learning mode when the stop symbol (S) is illuminated and there is an audible warning signal.

Delay wrapping cycle Note!

The »Delay wrapping process« function is only active in the »Job data« 1/1 and 1/2 menu.

Press this key before wrapping has been triggered by the automatic unit. Hold down the key for as long as you wish to delay the process.

Delayed wrapping can be used, for example, to delay the automatic wrapping operation until the end of a windrow can be reached.

Control-Terminal Setting the delay time until the start of automatic or manual wrapping If the time between the warning signal for a full baling chamber and the start of the automatic wrapping is not long enough to stop the baler, the start of the automatic wrapping operation can be delayed between 1 and 9.5 seconds: Call up the »User settings« submenu.

Press the submenu key as many times as needed until the function »Set delay time« is active and symbol (9) blinks.

Increase the delay time in steps of 0.5 second with this key.

If the 9.5 seconds are exceeded, the display shows «9s9» (M). Manual net wrapping is activated.

CLAAS COMMUNICATOR Switching on the Claas Communicator Observe!

Start the tractor and then switch on the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR.

When establishing a connection between the Claas Communicator and the baler for the first time, the menu configuration is transferred from the Rollant 255. The download process may take a few minutes. The configuration is saved to the memory of the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. When the »application menu« is displayed, the download process is finished.

After switching the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR on again, the menus are displayed after approx.

5 sec.

The CLAAS COMMUNICATOR has sufficient memory for five machine configurations.

Perform these steps for each value to be changed.

Softkeys The softkeys (5) work in connection with the screen display next to them. The desired function is activated simply by pressing the respective softkey.

CLAAS COMMUNICATOR Knife cleaning sequence When the blades are used for bale wrapping, the function »automatic blade cleaning sequence« can be activated. The function »automatic blade cleaning sequence« is only active when there is no flow of bale material in the machine, i.e. when no cutting process is being carried out, e.g. when binding or ejecting bales.

During the cleaning process, dirt and deposits are removed from the slots in the housing. This function is carried out automatically at regular intervals, i.e. after every 11 bales.

Procedure of turning back the rotor: – Switch off the power take-off shaft (PTO).

– Press key (H) to start the turning back of the rotor.

– If necessary, remove pressed material or foreign bodies.

Danger!

Before reaching into the rotor area, shut down the engine and pull out the ignition key.

If you try to eliminate the blockage manually, it may cause serious injuries.

– Switch on PTO drive.

– Lift pick-up.

CLAAS COMMUNICATOR - operation Manual wrapping - twine wrapping and net wrapping The CLAAS COMMUNICATOR can be used to adjust the bale wrapping according to the bale material remaining on the ground. These two functions apply for twine wrapping and net wrapping.

Triggering early wrapping The trigger for early wrapping is activated when there is not enough remaining bale material to wrap a whole bale.

– Press key (N) to switch on manual wrapping.

– Stop the tractor as soon as the symbol »Stop« is displayed.

Delaying the wrapping process: 8

Triggering the delayed wrapping enables the end of the swath to be reached.

Danger!

Before wrapping starts automatically, press key (M), »Delay wrapping process«.

– Press key (M) and keep it pressed to delay the wrapping process.

– Release key (M) as soon as the bale is finished.

– The wrapping process will start.

It is always possible to override the opening of the tailgate manually. To this end, just activate key (S). This does not delete the function »Automatic opening of tailgate« from the memory of the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR.

Closing the tailgate is not possible when a bale is blocked on the bale chute, i.e. when the output ramp is int he bottom position.

Twine wrapping Twine wrapping does not begin automatically even when the bale compacting chamber is completely full.

1. The toggle switch or push button on the control box is not set to twine wrapping, or the control box or control panel is not switched on.

2. When the control box is switched on, the arms for the twine wrapping must be in the start position. Power supply for the baler is faulty.

3. Check lines and plugs.

4. Tailgate sensors do not work.

5. Check switches, lines, screw connections, and mechanical actuation. Check the function of the switch, if necessary replace the switch.

6. Magnetic clutch or connection is faulty.

7. The magnetic clutch can be tested by manually switching on the clutch at the control box.

Wrapping starts automatically and the magnetic clutch remains engaged. The red light and buzzer on the control box do not come on after 5 seconds.

Before unhitching the baler place wheel chocks in front of the wheels.

Remove the wheel chocks (U) from the holder on the right-hand side of the platform and place behind the tyres to secure the round baler against coasting.

Parking support Danger!

Always adjust the parking support to the appropriate position before unhitching or hitching the round baler (stability). Take care when operating the parking support – risk of squashing!

Untighten the bolt (B) and pull out. Pull out the parking jack forwards.

Turn the parking support for 180 degree and push it back in, so that the bolt can be reinserted.

Secure the bolt.

Load the parking jack with the hand crank (W), until the towing eye on the trailer bar on the tractor is free.

Attention!

Once the parking castors are under load, the baler must not be moved. Otherwise the castors could be damaged. To shunt the baler, turn up the parking castors.

Maintenance IMPORTANT NOTES ON MAINTENANCE General notes on maintenance General Danger!

Repairs, maintenance and cleaning work as well as the rectification of functional faults must generally be performed with the power take-off shaft switched off and the tractor engine shut down – remove the ignition key!

Safety lock for tailgate Danger!

When working on the opened tailgate and inside the pressing chamber lock the tailgate with the safety lock.

Wheels / tires Danger!

Repair work on tires and wheels must only be performed by qualified personnel and the use of appropriate assembly tools.

With a too high tire pressure there is a danger of bursting!

☞ The specified tire pressure, see technical data, must be complied with.

☞ Do not stand next to the tire when inflating!

☞ Check the air pressure at regular intervals!

When working on tires make sure that the round baler is safely parked and secured against rolling (wheel chocks).

When working under the jacked up round baler no persons should be on the machine.

Ensure sufficient load bearing capacity of the lifting equipment.

Whenever assembling wheels retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. Tightening torques see Technical Data.

14.1.1

Maintenance Belts

V-belts must always be correctly tensioned. Oil contaminated V-belts may be cleaned with a cleansing fluid. Do not use petrol or similar.

Correct chain tension

Steel roller chains are correctly tensioned when the empty section of the chain can be depressed in the middle between the sprockets by thumb pressure for approx. 2 % of the respective axle distance, whereby the loaded section of the chain shall carry a light load.

With new chains check the tension more frequently.

Chain that have stretched over the course of time can be shortened by taking out a double link.

Hydraulic system Danger!

Always depressurize the hydraulic tailgate cylinders before starting to work in the hydraulic system.

The hydraulic system is under high pressure.

Fluids emerging under high pressure (fuel, hydraulic oil etc) can penetrate the skin and cause severe injury. In case of an injury consult a doctor immediately, since this may cause severe infections.

☞ When searching for leaks use appropriate means, because of the risk of injury.

☞ When working on the hydraulic system shut the engine down, pull the ignition key off and secure the combine harvester against rolling (parking brake, wheel chocks)!

☞ Check hydraulic hoses at regular intervals and replace them if damaged or aged!

Replacement hoses must comply with the technical requirements of the equipment manufacturer.

Environment!

Catch running out hydraulic oil and dispose of environmentally together with the used oil filter.

Repairs in the hydraulic system must only be performed by CLAAS expert workshops.

Maintenance Lubrication

Observe the specified oil change intervals and oil types for the transmissions. Use only high quality brand lubrication grease, e.g. multi-purpose grease Shell Retinax A EP 2, to lubricate the machine.

Before the lubrication process clean all grease nipples from dirt. Lubricate in regular intervals according to the lubrication plan.

Environment!

Store lubricants in suitable vessels and ensure appropriate waste disposal.

To lubricate the wheel hub bearings only use branded grease Lithium EP ("lithium base soap") with a drop point of between 180 °C and 190 °C. Fill the wheel hub bearings with fresh grease every 1000 operating hours. Lubricate all other lubrication points as shown in the lubrication schedule.

Attention!

Too much lubrication can cause damage to the bearings.

Cutting device Danger!

There is always a risk of injury when working on the cutting facility! Wear gloves.

Blunt knives cause a unnecessarily high fuel consumption.

Safety devices / spare parts Danger!

After the completion of maintenance wok reestablish the function of all safety devices.

As far as safety installations are subjected to wear, these must be checked at regular intervals and replaced in due time.

Spare parts must at least meet the technical requirements specified by the equipment manufacturer. This is guaranteed e.g. when using genuine spare parts.

Maintenance Eccentricity Attention!

Unstable running of the round baler causes material fatigue and fractures.

☞ Deposits of dirt in rotating parts of the machine, particularly in the cutting and conveyor rotor must be thoroughly removed at regular intervals.

Welding work

When performing electric welding work on the round baler proceed as follows: 1. Disconnect cable connections to the tractor.

2. Disconnect the plug connection from the control box or control terminal.

3. Pull all modules out.

4. Always fasten the ground clamp of the welding unit in the immediate vicinity of the welding location.

If grease comes out of the cap (O), then there is too much pressure in the lubrication system.

Possible causes: Excessive pressure from the grease gun (if using air pressure lubrication pump, set pressure (L) to 180 bar) or a blocked lubrication hose.

After greasing, operate the baler for about three minutes.

For balers without a main lubrication installation that have bearings needing to be greased, every bearing has to be greased by hand.

Maintenance Automatic central lubrication of the bearing (Rollant 254/255 - Option) Overview A grease pump (A) is fitted to the left side of the machine; it is used to provide central lubrication of the bearing. The grease pump (A) is activated each time the tailgate is closed.

A

The bearings are greased at regular intervals via plastic feed lines and grease blocks. The flow rate of the grease pumps can be adjusted by hand.

Maintenance PROPOSALS FOR WINTER STORAGE Preparation for winter storage of the round baler after the harvest is necessary to maintain the invested capital for this machine over a long time. Proper and thorough care and maintenance in combination with the repair of worn or damaged parts will save money and time during restarting.

1. Clean the round baler from stalk residuals and dirt.

2. Clean all bearings externally from grease and dust.

3. When cleaning with a high pressure cleaner or steam jet spray, remove the control box or panel/ Claas Communicator from the baler.

4. Lubricate all lubrication points, until grease emerges from the bearings (see lubrication chart).

Connect the round baler and run it for a short while.

5. Release, clean and grease the chains.

6. Check the round baler for wear and damage and have it repaired.

7. As a measure against drying out of the rubber cover the tires with a tire protection lacquer.

8. Store the round baler in a dry and weather protected room which is not used to store fertilisers.

9. Jack the round baler up to relieve the tires and adjust the specified tire pressure.

If the round baler is not jacked up, the specified tire pressure must be increased by 1.0 bar.

10. Grease all bare parts.

11. Retract the hydraulic cylinder and grease the piston rod.

12. Clean corroded spots and repair paint damage.

Attention!

If the round baler has to be washed down (which should be avoided if possible), all lubrication points must be lubricated after washing.

Then run the baler warm for a few minutes.

Cavities such as cable ducts should not be washed with water. Water can partly not be removed from such cavities and cause the formation of rust.
