This manual contains information regarding the use, setting and operation of the big square balers CLAAS QUADRANT 2100 N, QUADRANT 2100 ROTO FEED and QUADRANT 2100 ROTO CUT. Provided you follow the advice on the care and servicing of your machine you will be rewarded with reliable operating efficiency and long service from your square baler.

We recommend that you allow your local CLAAS Dealer to overhaul and service your big square baler immediately after the season, adhering to the recommended winter service schedule contained in this manual. Omissions of parts of a service, or incorrect adjustments lead to a drop in performance and cost valuable time.

By correct servicing and operation you can make full use of the latest technical knowledge and experience in mechanised handling of forage and straw with which your machine has been designed, and thereby ensure reliability of your big square baler.

General notes ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

Road traffic regulations may vary between countries. In case of discrepancies between the instructions provided by the manufacturer and the traffic regulations of the relevant countries, the traffic regulations of the countries concerned apply.

In addition to his driving license, the operator must always carry the copy of the vehicle type approval registration issued by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (the federal motor vehicle executive) and two wheel chocks.

When driving on public roads with the vehicle (baler), comply with the requirements stated under the letter C in the copy of the vehicle type approval registration (§ 18 section 5 StVZO) issued by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (the federal motor vehicle executive). lf any part(s) of the vehicle (baler) is/are subsequently modified whose condition is/are prescribed or the operation of which (after being modified) could represent a hazard to other road users, then the vehicle type approval registration shall no longer be valid and application must be made for a new vehicle type approval registration. In this case the machine must be presented to the responsible motor vehicle safety inspection authority (TÜV) in order to obtain an expert opinion certificate (§ 19 section 2 StVZO). lf you are in any doubt as to whether this situation applies in your case, please contact us as manufacturers. lf the vehicle (baler) is drawn behind the prime mover (such as a tractor), the lighting cable and the air brake system (hydraulic brake system) must be connected and checked for proper function.

Before starting to drive the condition of: - the connection between pulling vehicle and baler - the lighting equipment must be checked.

If the hitched baler covers the registration plate that the vehicle owner has received for one of his prime movers, a representation of the registration plate with illumination must be attached to the baler.

The motor vehicle construction and use (CUR) may be different in the individual countries.

The regulations concerning the maximum speed specified in the highway code of the respective country must be strictly observed. However, the towed baler is only designed for a maximum speed of 40 km/h (25 miles/h) or 60 km/h (38 miles/h), depending on the axle unit. These speeds must not be exceeded.

The instructions contained in this manual should be carefully read and observed by all persons who are concerned with the operation, maintenance and inspection of this machine in order to prevent accidents. Especially the »SAFETY RULES« in this manual should be read with the utmost care and adhered to.

The use of spare parts, accessories and ancillary equipment which have neither originally been manufactured by CLAAS nor been tested and approved by CLAAS can change the specified design characteristics of the CLAAS machine or can detract from its functional performance, with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive operational safety of the machine and its occupational safety standards (accident prevention).

Front, rear, right hand and left hand always refer to the machine as seen in the direction of forward travel.

Attention!

When moving the machine with a crane one must make sure that the user chains are hooked in vertically (in order to avoid a bending of the flat links).

Use a spacer tube if necessary.

Intended use

Before putting the machine into operation, read the operator's manual and follow the safety instructions.

This big square baler is designed solely for use in customary agricultural operations (intended use).

The baler is suitable and intended for picking up and compressing plant stalks (intended use).

Any arbitrary modifications carried out on the big square baler will relieve the manufacturer of all liability for any resulting damage or injury.

2. The warning and instruction decals placed on the big square baler provide important recommendations for safe operation. These instructions involve your safety – observe at all times.

3. Always comply with local traffic regulations when driving on public roads!

4. Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions. During work or road travel it is too late!

5. Clothing worn by the operator must be close fitting. Avoid wearing loose clothes!

6. Prevent fires by keeping the bog square baler clean!

Safety rules 7. Check cleanliness! Please ensure that steps and platforms are kept clean in order to stop the risk of slippage.

8. Before moving away, always check the immediate vicinity of the machine (e.g. for children). Ensure adequate visibility.

9. No riders are allowed on the baler during operation and during transport.

10. Only mount the big square baler after all mechanisms on the baler have come to a complete stop and after the tractor engine has been stopped.

11. Always connect the big square baler correctly to the tractor and only connect the baler to the specified coupling devices.

12. Watch out for pinch and shear points when operating the jack stand.

13. Position the supports correctly before hitching and unhitching the machine (stability).

14. Take special care when hitching or unhitching the baler to / from the tractor.

15. Observe the maximum permissible axle loads and total weights.

16. Observe the permissible transport lengths, widths and loads.

17. Check and mount transport equipment such as lights, warning devices and, if required, guards, shields etc.

18. Control installations (electrical remote control etc.) for remote control facilities must be routed in such a way, that they cannot initiate unintended movements in any transport and working position.

19. Always match the travel speed to the environmental conditions. Avoid making sharp turns when driving up or down slopes or when driving across a slope.

20. Drive operation, steering and braking characteristics are affected by the trailed baler.

Therefore ensure adequate steering and braking capability.

21. When travelling around bends, consider the mass of the baler.

22. Operate the big square baler only when all guards are fitted and in the correct position.

23. Before operating the baler, check for loose parts.

4.1.2

24. For machines fitted with the ROTO CUT option, please ensure that no blades or blanking blades are left on loose on the machine or in the twine box.

Knives or dummy knives are only permitted to be carried on the correct bracket.

25. Never remain standing in the working and danger zones of the baler.

26. Never remain standing within the slewing range of the baler.

27. Watch for pinch and shear points on power (e.g. hydraulically) controlled parts.

28. Twine may only be loaded and / or threaded after the tractor engine has been stopped and the ignition key has been removed and the baler motion has stopped completely.

29. An adequate safety distance must be held to feed mechanisms like pick up etc. during operation, because the feed mechanisms cannot be completely shielded by constructional measures due to their function.

30. Functional problems on feed elements such as pick up etc. must only be rectified after the tractor engine has been stopped, the ignition key removed and the baler motion has stopped completely.

31. The hold-down is a safety device and must not be removed during operation. It may only be removed in case of blockage of the big square baler and also then only with the tractor engine shut down.

32. Before leaving the tractor shut the engine down and pull the ignition key off. Apply the hand brake of the tractor, secure the big square baler with wheel chocks against rolling and close the parking brake.

33. No persons shall remain between tractor and big square baler, unless the vehicle is properly secured against rolling by applying the parking brake and/or placing wheel chocks under the wheels.

34. Do not exceed the maximum permissible speed (see »Specifications«).

35. Suspension for loading by crane: Ensure equal length of suspension chains!

Lifting gear with a lifting capacity of at least 10 Mp is required. Use only lifting tackle with approved safety.

36. On extreme slopes operate the machine only straight up or down the slope!

2. Observe the maximum permissible load capacity of hitches and swinging drawbar.

3. In Germany it is not allowed to connect the big square baler to the tractor's top fitted jaw type hitch unless a design specific type approved baler drawbar is used.

4. Tighten hitch eye mounting bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tight fit every 50 operating hours. For tightening torques see »Specifications«.

5. The QUADRANT 2100 N / 2100 RF / 2100 RC may only be hitched to prime movers (tractors) the swinging drawbar of which can support a vertical drawbar load of 15 kN (approx.

1500 kg).

6. In Italy, the baler must be fitted with an type approved swivel hitch eye.

PTO operation (PTO operated implements only) 1. Only use universal drive shafts specified by the manufacturer.

2. Always ensure that the guard, the universal drive shaft guard and the guard for the PTO stub are installed and in good condition.

3. Ensure that the guards correctly cover the universal drive shafts both in the transport and in the working position.

4. Always disengage the PTO shaft, stop the engine and remove the ignition key before attaching or detaching the universal drive shaft.

5. Always make sure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and securely fastened.

6. Prevent the universal drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft by attaching chains.

7. Before activating the power take-off shaft make sure that the selected speed and sense of rotation of the tractor’s power take-off shaft complies with the permissible speed and sense of rotation of the baler.

8. Before activating the power take-off shaft make sure that no persons are inside the danger zone of the machine.

9. Never engage the PTO shaft while the tractor engine is stopped.

10. When operating the PTO shaft no one must ever stand in the vicinity of the rotating PTO shaft or universal drive shaft.

11. Always disengage the PTO shaft when the turn angle is extreme or when the PTO drive shaft is not used.

12. High inertia implements do not become stationary immediately when the PTO is disengaged. Allow sufficient time for the implement to cast down to a complete halt. Do not go near the baler until all mechanisms have stopped.

13. Never attempt to clean, lubricate, repair or adjust the PTO driven machine or the universal drive shaft unless the PTO shaft has been disengaged, the engine has been switched off and the ignition key has been removed.

14. Place the uncoupled universal drive shaft on the holding bracket provided or hang into the chain provided.

15. After uncoupling the universal drive shaft, slide the protective sleeve onto the stub of the PTO shaft.

16. In case of damage, the defective parts must immediately be repaired.

17. The baler must not be operated with a damaged, faulty PTO shaft and / or universal drive shaft. Always lock the flywheel in position using the flywheel brake provided for that purpose when connecting and disconnecting the universal drive shaft and whenever carrying out maintenance and/or repair work on the baler.

Hydraulic system 1. The hydraulic system is under high pressure.

2. The hydraulic system may become very hot and cause severe injury.

3. When connecting the hydraulic hoses to the tractor hydraulics make sure that the hydraulic system is depressurized on both the tractor side as well as the machine side.

4. On connections for hydraulic functions between tractor and big square baler coupling sockets and plugs should be marked, so that operating errors are ruled out. Mixing up of connections will reverse the function (e.g. up / down) – danger of accident!

5. lnspect hydraulic hoses regularly and replace damaged and deteriorated hoses with new ones. The replacement hoses must comply with the technical standards required by the manufacturer of the implement.

Safety rules 6. Checking for leaks is hazardous. Use the correct equipment to search / check for possible leaks. NEVER use your hand to detect pressure leaks. Beware of personal injury.

7. Fluids emerging under high pressure (hydraulic oil) can penetrate the skin and cause severe injury. In case of injury seek medical advice – danger of infection!

8. Before working on the hydraulic system it is essential to release all hydraulic pressure in the system and to stop the engine.

9. Repair work on the hydraulic system is only to be carried out by authorised CLAAS workshops.

10. There is danger of hydraulic hoses breaking.

Tyres / Brakes 1. Always ensure the proper function of the brake systems before moving the unit.

2. The brake systems must be subjected to a thorough inspection at regular intervals.

3. Adjustment and repair work on the brake system should only be performed by specialist workshops or recognised brake system depots.

4. When carrying out work on tyres, make sure that the baler is safely parked and correctly secured so that it cannot roll away (wheel chocks).

5. Fitting tyres and wheels requires special training and expert knowledge and the correct tools.

6. Repair work on tyres and wheels may only be carried out by professionals using correct tools.

7. Whenever assembling wheels retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. Tightening torques see »Technical data«.

2. Regularly check nuts and bolts for tight fit and tighten them as necessary.

3. Dispose of oil, grease and filters in a way that is harmless to the environment and in accordance with existing anti pollution regulations.

4. Before starting welding work and work in the electric system disconnect the electric power supply and pull the plugs off the central electrics.

5. Guards and shields that are subject to wear must be inspected at regular intervals and replaced in good time with new ones.

6. Spare parts must at least comply with the technical standards required by the manufacturer of the implement. Original spare parts are manufactured to meet these standards.

Noise level of machines at work, information »D« The noise level was measured according to method 2 – acoustic screen – appendix 1 to »Agricultural Machinery Noise«, AIC 1986/117 (REV) – Health and Safety Executive.

8. Check tyre pressures regularly. Observe the recommended tyre pressure.

Maintenance 1. Repair, service and cleaning work and the elimination of malfunctions should only be performed with the drive and engine switched off. Remove the ignition key. Lock the flywheel in position with the brake provided for that purpose.

Always use suitable tools and wear gloves when replacing any working parts of the machine (e.g. knives) with new ones.

Pull the emergency brake lever only to check the function! Then charge the pressure accumulator by operating the service brake (foot brake on the tractor) several times.

This optional equipment brakes and holds the baler if the baler becomes disconnected from the tractor.

The hydraulic emergency brake can be activated in two different ways: – Pulling of safety chain (A). This chain actuates lever (B), which then directly triggers emergency braking of the baler. Hose (C) is disconnected from baler. The baler will stop.

– Hose (C) is pulled out as a result of the baler becoming disconnected from the tractor. This breakage triggers the hydraulic emergency brake and stops the baler.

Connection Connect hose (C) to the tractor port provided for this purpose.

Fasten safety chain (A) to the rear of the tractor.

Description and function MACHINE OVERVIEW Power transmission For the big square baler CLAAS QUADRANT 2100 N a tractor with an engine power of at least 74 kW (100 HP) is required.

For the big square baler CLAAS QUADRANT 2100 RF a tractor with an engine power of at least 81 kW (110 HP) is required.

For the big square baler CLAAS QUADRANT 2100 RC a tractor with an engine power of at least 96 kW (130 HP) is required.

Attach the big square baler to the swinging drawbar or the top fitted tow jaw of the tractor via the height adjustable hitch eye.

The baler is driven via propshafts and angle drive gearboxes at a PTO speed of 1000 rpm.

On the tractor side the propshaft is fitted with a wide angle universal joint.

A friction clutch with overrun device is installed ahead of the flywheel.

Free wheeling friction clutch The machine is equipped with an friction clutch (K) which dampens the extreme loads caused by the ram during baling operations.

The friction clutch protects the tractor from peak loads.

This clutch is subject to heavy stress when the machine is running and therefore requires the driver's attention.

The cam-type cut-out clutch (N) additionally protects the needles against damage, which may be caused by reaction of the piston lock, the machine frame und the baling ram or if the baling pressure is too high.

Description and function Mechanical flywheel brake In order to restrict movement of the flywheel (e.g. when loading twine), the baler is fitted with a mechanical flywheel brake.

To activate the flywheel brake pull the brake handle (F) forward so that the brake band is pulled against the flywheel.

Attention!

Fire hazard!

Pick up

QUADRANT 2100 N

The pick-up drum (T) picks stalks up neatly.

Deflector (N), baffle plate (P) or roller crop-press (R) ensure an even intake.

On the QUADRANT 2100 N the stalks picked up by the pick-up drum is conveyed to the middle by conveyor screws (F) and then picked up by the rake.

The QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC is equipped with a pick-up with continuous conveyor screw (A). This also conveys the crop to the middle and paddles (B) move it directly into the rotor.

With the tractor hydraulics the pick-up can be raised for transport and lowered for operation.

On QUADRANT 2100 N a gas strut (G) is installed for damping.

Description and function

5 Roller crop press (QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC) Even with unfavourable harvesting conditions, uneven swaths and short crop, the roller crop press (R) guarantees even feed to the continuous conveyor screw.

The roller crop press (R) is adjustable in height.

The roller crop press can pivot upward and, due to its spring suspension system, adapt to swath conditions.

(Fig. 6) 6 Short crop baffle (QUADRANT 2100 N) A short crop baffle (P) may additionally be mounted to pick up short crop, light swaths and second cut hay.

The short crop baffle prevents the crop to be picked up from rolling up before the pick up.

P 7 Cutting facility (QUADRANT 2100 RC) The cutting unit can be switched on and off by pressing a push button on the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. The cutting unit cuts the crop to lengths of approx.

45 mm or 90 mm before it is delivered to the rake.

Description and function The cutting unit is equipped with 16 individual blades (M), each of which is protected against damage by foreign objects. When picking up heavy foreign objects such as hard wood or the like, the blades may retract by means of springs (F).

After the foreign object has passed the machine, the blades return to their initial position.

9 Feed rake The feed rake (A) operates in a three stroke cycle.

Whilst during the 1st and 2nd operating strokes of the feed rake the crop accumulates in portions in the feed channel, the 3rd stroke forces the entire package in front of the ram.

Description and function Feed rake drive The feed rake is equipped with an overload coupling (R). In case of a feed rake overload, the overload coupling will shut off the feed rake drive.

On QUADRANT 2100 N the pick-up will stop immediately in order to prevent the pressing channel from being blocked.

13 Rotor drive (QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC) The rotor drive gearbox (T) is equipped with an integrated overload clutch. In case of rotor overload, the overload clutch will shut off the rotor drive. The pick up will also come to a halt.

Description and function Ram and baling duct The baling ram shapes the material to dense bales with square corners. Big square bales can be set up in 1 cm steps all the way to a size of approx. 2.5 metres, if the machine is equipped with the comfort system CLAAS COMMUNICATOR or mechanically, if no comfort system is available.

Moisture sensor (option on QUADRANT 2100 RF/ RC) The baling channel can be fitted with an additional moisture sensor (F). With the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR the tractor driver can permanently monitor the moisture of the bale material throughout the baling process.

Description and function Baling pressure control Working principle QUADRANT 2100 N: H E

With a double-acting control valve the desired baling pressure can be adjusted from the tractor. Hydraulic cylinder (H) tightens the spring of pressure relief valve (D) via eccentric (E). Display scale (A) shows the pre-selected adjustment. When the baler is in operation a piston pump driven by the main drive pumps oil into the hydraulic cylinders for the baling duct. The baling flaps are pushed to the inside.

The counter pressure of the crop causes the hydraulic oil pressure to rise. The generated hydraulic pressure can be read on pressure gauge (M). The baling pressure can be altered at any time by simply adjusting hydraulic cylinder (H) (via the tractor hydraulics).

Locking block (C) collects all internal leaks and thereby avoids any unintended adjusting movements of hydraulic cylinder (H).

Description and function Working principle (QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC) The desired baling pressure can be adjusted on the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. When the baler is in operation a piston pump driven by the main drive pumps oil into the hydraulic cylinders for the baling duct. The baling flaps are pushed to the inside. The counter pressure of the crop causes the hydraulic oil pressure to rise. The electronic control unit compensates this effect by dumping and replenishing oil as required, in order to maintain the baling pressure at a constant level.

Description and function Knotter cleaning unit up to serial number 74100238 The tying facilities on the knotter shaft are kept clean by two electric fans (G).

On QUADRANT 2100 N the On/Off plug must be plugged into or pulled out of the 2-pole socket (S).

On QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC the electric fans are switched on and off when switching the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR on and off.

31 Steered tandem axle (option) The steered tandem axle may be used as rigid or steered tandem axle (T).

The setting for rigid or steered position is accomplished via the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. Danger!

During road travel, when reversing and when used on sloped fields the tandem axle must be set to rigid position.

7 Before operation

Before operation

Before operation CHECK AND OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE OPERATING THE MACHINE 1. Remove and unpack all wired on and / or extra parts.

2. Hitch the baler to the swinging drawbar, taking care to ensure that you have complied with relevant regulations (connection to jaw type hitch is allowed in Germany only if a type approved drawbar is used).

3. On balers with trailer coupling (observe version).

Check presence and fit of bushing in trailer coupling ring.

4. Adapt the propshaft and connect it. Prevent shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft by attaching chains.

5. After hitching up the big square baler and connecting the propeller shaft check whether the propeller shaft is free to move by carefully driving right- and left-hand turns.

6. The most favourable initial position of the pick-up drum is 20 to 30 mm between teeth and ground.

In order to avoid damage to the gauge wheels of the pick-up, these should be slightly raised when working on hard stubbles.

7. Connect the cable for the balers lighting system (7-pin) to the tractor.

8. For the power supply of the baler, connect the 2-pin plug from the Y-shape cable to the socket on the tractor.

In case the tractor is not equipped with a 2-pin socket, such a socket should be retrofitted.

The cable with the 25 A in line fuse, which can be ordered with the part no. 011 708.0, may also be connected directly to the tractor battery or the starter if connection to the battery is not possible. lf neither is possible, connect the cable to terminals 54 and 58 of the 7 pin tractor socket.

Pole 31 must then be connected to ground with a safe contact.

9. Connect the cable end from the Claas Communicator to the 9-pin end of the Y cable.

13. Whenever assembling wheels retighten the wheel bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. For tightening torques see »Specifications«.

Assembly of wheels is only permitted when using lifting gear of appropriate load bearing capacity for the total weight of the respective big square baler type.

14. Check tyres for proper inflation and correct as necessary.

15. Check oil level in all gearboxes, top up if necessary.

16. Check oil level in the hydraulic reservoir (QUADRANT 2100 N), top up if necessary.

17. Clean knotter hooks, twine retainers, twine eyes and needle tips of grease and paint.

18. Trip tying cycle and rotate baler by hand with twine unthreaded. Check all tying equipment for proper operation.

19. Check adjustment and function of knotter shaft brake and needle carrier brake.

20. Check operation of parking brake including flywheel parking brake.

21. On balers with air brake systems: Adapt compressed air hoses to correct length to the tractor and connect the hoses. Adaptation of compressed air hoses may only be carried out by specialist workshops.

22. On balers with hydraulically operated brake systems: Adapt the hydraulic hose to correct length to the tractor and connect the hose.

Adaptation of hydraulic hoses may only be carried out by specialist workshops.

23. Connect up the hydraulic hose for the jack stand and hydraulic pick-up lift or hydraulic circulation.

24. Check operation of brakes.

25. Check function of twine monitor.

26. Check function of hydraulic pick up lift.

27. Perform a test run with twine unthreaded after making sure that the baler is clear of any parts.

10. Position the Claas Communicator within easy reach of the driver.

11. Connect up the 16-pin connector for the baler power supply to the connector on the tractor.

12. Tighten wheel nuts or bolts. For tightening torques see »Specifications«.

Before operation

Before operation HITCHING UP THE BALER Before putting the big square baler into operation for the first time, adjust the baler hitch and propshaft to fit to the tractor.

Attention!

Always connect the square baler correctly to the tractor and only connect and secure the baler to the specified coupling devices.

Special care must be taken when hitching and unhitching the square baler to and from the tractor!

Note!

The square baler must be hitched up horizontally in order to ensure an optimal material flow in the pickup.

In order to avoid damage to propshaft and drive, pay particular attention to exact hitching to the tractor. In view of the necessary operating safety, a short hitch to the swinging drawbar, jaw type hitch, hitch- or pitonfix is essential.

Maximum cornering is determined by the retracted propeller shaft length „L“.

Turn the drawbar head and the hitch eye through an angle of 180° and refit them. Please consider the drawbar head's high deadweight – use a hoist!

Set the hitch eye (Z) to the correct height and then retighten the fixing bolts (2 and 3).

Note!

With bolts of Ø 30 mm, the bush can be used in the hitch eye which can be found in the tool box.

Hitch eye adjustment The hitch eye (Z) can be adjusted in height.

After the removal of the hex bolts (2) the hitch eye can be adjusted to the height of the tractor.

Should the adjustment not be sufficient, then by removing the bolts (3) the whole drawbar (K) can be adjusted. Beforehand, ensure that the cover (1) has been removed.

Refit the cover (1).

Connect the baler and secure.

After adjustment ensure that the bolts have been retightened to the correct torque. (Torque settings see »Technical data«). Connect the baler and secure.

The fixing bolts (1) need to be retightened after the first 10 hours of operation, and then checked after every 50 hrs for secure fitting.

Note!

If the tractor is equipped with a tow hitch from Co. Rockinger, the slim, straight towing bolt should be used.

Hitch the baler in a horizontal position. This ensures as large a feed opening as possible when the pick up is in its lowered working position.

Attention!

The bushing in the towing eye must always be greased. Otherwise wear results due to friction.

Before operation Hydraulic ports on the tractor Attention!

Have the hydraulic hose (or the hydraulic hoses in case of a hydraulic brake) adapted to the correct length to suit the tractor.

Adaptions of hydraulic hoses must only be carried out by specialist workshops.

QUADRANT 2100 N Connect the hydraulic hose (H) for hydraulic pick up and jack stand operation to a single acting control valve on the tractor.

Connect hydraulic hose (A) for baling pressure adjustment and bale ejector to a double-acting control valve on the tractor.

If the tractor does not have a control valve with an adjustable delivery rate, you must ensure that the throughflow volume does not exceed 50 l/min.

Before operation Fitting the propshafts Danger!

Always lock the flywheel in position by means of flywheel brake (F) before connecting or disconnecting the propshaft.

This is essential as otherwise the baler drives could be set in motion by the dead weight of the ram.

Attention!

Clean and grease the PTO stub profiles on the gearbox and on the tractor sides before connecting the propshaft.

Connecting the propshaft to the baler Unscrew the clamping bolt (K).

The propshaft must be pushed over the stub and locked in the annular groove with a clamping bolt.

Insert clamping bolt and tighten to 200 Nm. Test clamping effect and check once a week.

After shortening the propshaft tubes the edges must be deburred and greased.

Note!

The propshaft is provided with a lubricating device for the splined tube sections, enabling greasing in installed condition after pushing back cover (A).

This feature must be refitted if it has been lost when shortening of the propshaft.

Before operation Assemble both halves of the propshaft together ensuring they have been greased.

Not greasing the star profiled shafts when they are assembled will drastically reduce the life expectancy of the propshaft.

Whilst the propshaft is in use, the lubrication hole must always remain covered.

Never operate the baler without the propshaft guards – risk of injury.

☞ Replace damaged protection tubes immediately. Engage the PTO gradually to prevent stress on the drives.

Attention!

Safety retaining chains must only transfer radial forces to the protection and should only be of such a length that they sling around the protection tubes by 90 degree.

On tractor: The retaining chain protects the propshaft guard from rotating, thus causing accidents.

Attach the retaining chain (G) so that enough swashing range for the propshaft is ensured in all operating positions. The retaining chain may not catch on the swinging drawbar or other components.

The retaining chain of the funnel guard must be attached to the wide angle propeller shaft in such a way that it lies on approx. 1/4 of the funnel circumference in all operating positions (even through curves).

If compressed air is available in the compressed air reservoir (H) and the air hoses are disconnected, the air brakes of the baler are applied.

With a minimum available air pressure of 4 bar in the reservoir, the brakes can be released by pressing in push button (D) on the change over valve.

When the compressed air hoses are reconnected to the tractor, the push button is automatically reset.

If the pressure is less than 4 bar, the brakes cannot be released by pressing push button (D). In this case, the remaining compressed air must be completely bled from the air reservoir via drain valve (E).

Hydraulic braking system Connect the hydraulic hose for the hydraulic braking system to the quick release coupling on the tractor provided for that purpose.

On machines with hydraulic active brake the chain to operate the safety valve must be connected to the tractor.

Then move the depth stops (H) on left- and right-hand side of the machine to highest position, or hook the chains into the highest point.

On QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC the pick-up height can be adjusted to four different positions by adjusting the depth stops accordingly:

Attention!

During work with the QUADRANT 2100 N the control lever on the tractor must be in float position, as otherwise the hydraulic pick-up relief may be disturbed. Heavy bouncing might otherwise overload the pick up or the pick up gauge wheels.

4 Pick up with gauge wheels Work in hay or silage crops: On QUADRANT 2100 N lower the pick-up completely, so that the gauge wheels are firmly on the ground and hook the chains (G) into the last chain link.

On QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC lower the pick-up completely, so that the gauge wheels rest on the ground. For use in hay and for silage, the depth stops (H) are adjusted in their lowest position (pos. 1).

Baler set up Adjusting twine tensioner (7): The basic setting of spring length at the twine box without twine is (X) = 59-1 mm.

Readjust the length of the spring (X) in accordance with the thickness of the twine.

If the twine is thinner, the spring must be set to be stronger to avoid unnecessary fault messages.

The baler twine, twine eyes and tying mechanisms which come into direct contact with the twine must be free of oil and grease.

Adjusting twine run Adjust twine eye (10): Adjust the last twine eye so that the twine runs exactly down the centre of the back of the needle. During the tying process, the twine must lie in the groove of the needles.

10 The tying mechanisms are correctly adjusted when the twine ends of the knot are of different lengths.

The twine ends can vary in length, depending on the thickness of the twine. The short end should be approx. 5 mm long, the long end approx. 15...30 mm (dimension X) longer.

9 Operation

Operation

Operation STARTING WORK Points »7« and »9« must be observed during initial commissioning!

1. Bring the two-piece bale chute or the hydraulically operated single piece bale chute into working position.

2. Adjust the baling pressure for QUADRANT 2100 N from the tractor or on QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC from the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. 3. Adjust the bale length (see chapter 9 Fig. 17 and Fig. 18, or chapter 10).

4. Engage the PTO shaft with the tractor engine running at low idle speed. Do not pick up any material at this time.

5. Trigger tying process manually on QUADRANT 2100 N and via CLAAS COMMUNICATOR on QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC (see chapter 12.10 Fig. 2, or chapter 10).

6. As soon as the first tying cycle has been completed and the twine is in the retainer plates, disengage the PTO shaft and switch off the tractor engine.

7. Pull all twine off the knotter hooks (perform only for initial start-up and each time after threading the twine.) This is important as otherwise tying problems may occur.

8. Reengage the PTO shaft and increase the PTO speed to 1000 rpm. Pick up the crop.

9. When putting the baler into operation for the first time, set the pressure 15 - 20% lower than specified as a guide value because friction in the baling chamber is increased by presence of surface paint.

First fill the bale chamber with the crop without building up pressure. After the bale chamber is filled, gradually increase the bale density.

To do this slowly increase the set value of the pressure until the required bale density is achieved. The pressure is adjusted and displayed on QUADRANT 2100 N via the tractor hydraulics and the scale and on QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC via the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. Particularly in crops for silage, raise the baling pressure slowly.

9.1.1

Operation Final baling pressure can be adjusted after baling 1 - 2 bales.

As soon as the bale has reached the desired length, the knotter clutch starts the tying mechanism.

The twine ends are held by the twine retainers. From there the twines run over the rollers in the tips of the needles to the twine box.

The needles lay the twines around the bale and place the twines in the path of each knotter. The twine ends held by the twine retainers and the twine taken up by the needles are now tied together.

At the same time, the new twines are clamped in the retainers and cut off by the knives. The tying cycle is finished.

Note!

Since the friction value inside the new baling chamber is considerably higher because of the paint finish, the first approx. 1000 bales should be produced with reduced pressing force.

Operation Free wheeling slip clutch Attention!

Start at reduced ground speed when breaking in the clutch (K) in a new baler.

This rule is also to be adhered to after each opening and / or venting of the clutch.

The torque which can be transmitted will decrease following frequent consecutive slipping due to the generated heat. After a suitable cooling period, the torque and consequently the full capacity of the clutch is restored when it is warm to touch.

Clutch linings which have burned during unpermitted slip periods must be replaced in accordance with assembly instructions.

Note!

The clutch must be vented before each season and after any prolonged standstill (see »Maintenance«).

Sensors detect the standstill of the feed rake drive and an electronic module transmits a signal to the solenoid (N).

The solenoid (N) locks the rotor drive overload clutch.

A buzzer sounds and the display of the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR shows the feed rake symbol. The rotor drive is then also switched off. The pick-up stops at the same time.

On QUADRANT 2100 N the roller chain drive to the pick-up is interrupted when switching of the feed rake.

Stop the tractor immediately, back the machine away from the crop and reduce main drive speed. After reducing the speed, the clutch (R) automatically re engages the feed rake drive.

Operation When the rake is restarted (visual control), increase the speed until the feeder duct is free and the symbol »Feeder error« in the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR goes out. Now the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR will display »Rotor error«.

The cutting blades swing back and the cutting floor opens automatically.

After having reduced the speed again, the integrated overload clutch (T) of the rotor drive automatically reengages.

The knives are automatically reengaged and the cutting floor closed.

Rotor overload Attention!

In case of a rotor problem (overload) do not switch off the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. The integrated overload clutch (T) disengages the rotor drive, should the rotor become overloaded. The rotor and the pick up stop. The feed rake drive keeps on running. The display of the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR shows the symbol for rotor fault.

Stop the tractor immediately, back the machine away from the crop and reduce main drive speed. The knives are automatically disengaged. At the same time, the hydraulic cylinder lowers the cutting floor.

The overload clutch (T) then reengages automatically.

The knives are automatically reengaged and the cutting floor closed.

Switching on the Claas Communicator Press the On/Off-key (1).

The »application menu« is started automatically.

Note!

When establishing a connection between the baler and the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR for the first time, the menu configuration is transferred from the baler computer to the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. The loading process may take several minutes, until the first control menu of the baler is displayed.

During the loading process the menus are saved to the memory of the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR. After switching the CLAAS COMMUNICATORS off and on again the menus are displayed after approx. 5 sec.

The CLAAS COMMUNICATOR has sufficient memory for five machine configurations. In order to be able to save another machine, you must first delete a machine configuration, see »Service menu«.

Note!

Never switch off the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR when working as all the control functions will fail.

CLAAS COMMUNICATOR Tying fault (Claas Communicator without ISOBUS) The following work steps show how to rectify a wrapping fault, depending on the time of its occurrence.

When starting the Claas Communicator – Turn the straw wheel backwards until the measured bale length shown on the Claas Communicator is less than the set bale length.

– Wait for 10 seconds.

– Switch the Claas Communicator off and on again.

During work There are two possibilities: – The measured bale length (displayed on the Claas Communicator) is shorter than the pre-adjusted bale length: Press key (R) to delete the fault.

– The measured bale length (displayed on the Claas Communicator) is longer than the pre-adjusted bale length: Turn the straw wheel back, until the measured bale length is shorter than the pre-adjusted bale length, then press key (R) to delete the fault.

CLAAS COMMUNICATOR Tying fault 26 Tying fault 26 will appear if 2 tying orders are switched on in a period of 3 seconds.

– Confirm the fault message.

– Turn the straw wheel backwards until the measured bale length shown on the Claas Communicator is less than the set bale length.

– Wait for 10 seconds.

– Switch off the Claas Communicator.

– Switch on the Claas Communicator again.

Tying fault 27/28/29 Tying fault 27 appears if mechanical tying (visible through needle movement) was activated without an electrical signal (the sensor did not register or send information).

Tying fault 28 appears if an electric signal (electric tying) was activated while the needles stayed in home position.

Tying fault 29 appears if the needles in the bale chamber are blocked while mechanical and electric tying was activated.

These three tying faults can be deleted as follows: – Confirm fault message by pressing push button (R), tying is blocked.

– Shut down the PTO drive, shut down the engine and pull out the ignition key.

– Fault finding: was the faut caused by a mechanical problem? was the faut caused by an electrical problem?

– Correct fault.

– Switch on machine again (key, engine and PTO).

– Restart work.

Do not ingore the fault message, otherwise, fault 26 will appear.

Maintenance IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS Important maintenance instructions and safety regulations Danger!

Repair, maintenance and cleaning work as well as the rectification of functional faults must generally be performed with the PTO-drive disengaged and the tractor engine shut down. Remove the ignition key!

Lock the flywheel with the brake provided for that purpose.

Secure the baler by blocking its wheels (parking brake, wheel chocks).

Wheels / tyres Danger!

Repair work on tyres must only be carried out by professionals and with suitable tools! lf tyre pressures exceed the specified values, the tyres may explode!

☞ The specified tire pressure must be complied with, see technical data.

☞ Never stand in the vicinity of the tyre while it is being inflated!

☞ Check tyre pressures regularly.

When working on the wheels make sure that the big square baler is safely parked and secured against rolling (wheel chocks).

When working under the jacked-up big square baler no persons should be on the machine.

Ensure sufficient load bearing capacity of the lifting equipment.

Whenever assembling wheels retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours, then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. Tightening torques see Technical Data.

12.1.1

Maintenance Brakes Danger!

Adjustments and repair work on the brake system are only to be carried out by specialist workshops or recognised brake service specialists. The brake systems must be subjected to a thorough inspection at regular intervals!

Air operated brake system: Inspect the compressed air hoses for damage.

Damaged hoses must be replaced. Welding or soldering work on fittings or pipes is not permitted.

Damaged parts must always be replaced. lf the visual inspection or the function or efficiency test of the air operated brake system indicates any defects, the system must be subjected to a closer examination by a recognised specialist service workshop.

Correct chain tension

Steel roller chains are correctly tensioned when the empty section of the chain can be depressed in the middle between the sprockets by thumb pressure by approx. 2 % of the distance between the sprockets.

With new chains check the tension more frequently.

Chain that have stretched over the course of time can be shortened by taking out a double link.

Maintenance Hydraulic system Danger!

Before working on the hydraulic system it is essential to depressurize the hydraulic cylinders.

The hydraulic system is under high pressure.

Fluids emerging under high pressure (fuel, hydraulic oil etc) can penetrate the skin and cause severe injury. In case of an injury consult a doctor immediately since this may cause severe infections.

☞ Due to the risk of being injured always use the correct equipment to check for possible leaks.

☞ When working on the hydraulic system shut the engine down, pull the ignition key off and secure the big square baler against rolling (parking brake, wheel chocks)!

☞ Check hydraulic hoses at regular intervals and replace them if damaged or aged!

Replacement hoses must comply with the technical standards required by the equipment manufacturer !

Environment!

Catch running-out hydraulic oil and dispose of environmentally together with the used oil filter.

Repair work on the hydraulic system is only to be carried out by authorised CLAAS workshops.

Baling and tying mechanisms

Clean the baling and tying mechanism daily, or even more often if required, of chaff and crop debris.

After carrying out the maintenance work, refit the safety guards so that they will give the intended protection.

Chassis

Check the tightness of the trailer coupling ring mounting bolts after the first 10 hours of operation. For tightening torques see »Technical Data«.

12.1.3

Maintenance Lubrication

For lubrication of the wheel hub bearings use only a branded Lithium EP grease (»lithium saponified grease«) with a pour point of 180 °C to 190 °C. Pack the wheel hub bearings with fresh grease every 1000 hours of operation. Lubricate all other lubrication points in accordance with the lubrication chart.

Observe the specified oil change intervals and oil types for the transmissions. Use only high quality brand lubrication grease, e.g. multi-purpose grease Shell Retinax A EP 2 to lubricate the machine.

Before the lubrication process clean all grease nipples from dirt. Lubricate in regular intervals according to the lubrication plan.

Environment!

Store lubricants in suitable vessels and ensure appropriate waste disposal.

Attention!

Excessive lubrication can cause damage to the bearings.

Cutting unit Danger!

There is always a risk of injury when working on the cutting facility! Wear gloves.

Blunt blades unnecessarily increase power requirements.

Safety devices / spare parts Danger!

After carrying out the maintenance work, refit the safety guards so that they will give the intended protection.

If safety devices are subject to wear, these must be checked at regular intervals and replaced in due time.

Spare parts must at least meet the technical requirements specified by the equipment manufacturer. This is guaranteed e.g. when using original spare parts.

Maintenance Drain air reservoir The water can be drained at drain valve (E). Drain the water every 50 working hours.

Brake cylinder Check brake cylinder stroke: The stroke of the brake cylinder piston must only be utilised to 2/3 in case of a hard stop. lf the piston stroke is too long, the brake system must be adjusted or repaired by a specialist service workshop.

Maintenance TYRES Check tight fit of wheel nuts After the first 10 to 15 working hours and after the first 50 working hours, all wheel nuts (8 pcs.) of each tyre shall be checked for a tight fit.

Repeat this check every 100 working hours and then every 1000 working hours (once a year).

Procedure: Tighten wheel nuts progressively, working from the first nut to the one opposite, using a torque wrench.

Checking wheel hub backlash Attention!

Jack up baler and apply wheel chocks to prevent baler from moving.

Check wheel hub backlash every 100 operating hours.

Lift axle until tyres rotate freely. Release the brake Apply lever between tyres and ground and check backlash. If backlash is noticeable, readjust backlash.

Adjusting the backlash Procedure: 1. Remove dust cap.

2. Remove cotter pin from axle nut.

3. Tighten axle nut while rotating the tyre at the same time until the wheel hub is slightly decelerated.

4. Turn the axle nut back (max. 30 degrees) to the next position where the cotter pin can be located in the hole.

5. Insert new cotter pin.

6. Fill some grease into the dust cap and force or screw it into the wheel hub.

6 Overload clutches and shear bolts Danger!

Before replacing a shear bolt with a new one, always stop baler and tractor engine.

Disengage the drive of the PTO shaft and remove the tractor ignition key.

7 Free wheeling slip clutch The clutch must be vented prior to each new season and after long periods of standstill. Tighten the six nuts (M) evenly until the spring assembly is exposed and loosen linings by briefly switching the drive on several times.

If the flywheel does not stop now, the clutch must be opened.

After venting the clutch, turn back the six nuts evenly to their initial position (end of threaded bolt).

Main drive The main drive is protected from damage by a cam-type cut-out clutch (S). In case of a blockage it will interrupt the power train.

Check baler for foreign objects or damage, remove foreign objects, if necessary clear the baling duct.

When reducing the operating speed the cam-type cut-out clutch will engage automatically.

Changing the shear bolt for the knotter shaft: Open the baler duct.

Remove the twin from the knotters and loose ends from the knotter beds.

Check the position of the needles.

Should the shear bolt break when the needles are travelling up, then using a suitable lever ( 20 x 1000 mm), the needles need to be totally raised in direction (L) and then to the end stop.

Should this occur during the down stroke, then using a suitable lever ( 20 x 1000 mm) the needles need to be returned to their end stops in direction (G).

Fit back the shear bolt (S) to the knotter drive shaft and fit a new nut.

Maintenance Check to see how the ram stops (K) marry up with the ram arms, if necessary turn the flywheel backwards until the ram stops (K) are located.

If the shear bolt is sheared off again check the needle position to the ram and adjust (see section TYING FACILITY, Fig. 7, 8), if necessary check and adjust the tying release.

Tying release, checking and adjustment (QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC) Check the distance between the spacer (E) and the cam (F) on the bale tying release. The distance (X) should be 4,0-1 mm.

To adjust, slacken off the nut (D) and pull the lever (C) out slightly and activate electrically.

When the motor stops in the park position, press the lever (C) back on slightly so that the gap (X) is 4,0-1 mm.

Tighten the nut on lever to 12 Nm. Test run: Release the tying and check distance (X) again.

Maintenance Adjusting the knotter pinion for correct play Note!

Before adjusting, relieve the tension from the spring for the twine retainer plates. After adjustment, pretension the spring as shown in (Fig. 12) (dimension X).

Knotter pinion play can be checked by means of the knotter hook. The knotter drive pinion must rest against the knotter drive disc with no play and without exerting any pressure on the knotter drive disc.

To adjust, loosen the four mounting bolts on the knotter frame. Use a pointed tool (screwdriver or something similar) and move the upper and lower halves of the knotter frame sideways in opposite directions, at the same time tightening the four mounting bolts again.

Needle carrier brakes The needle carrier brakes hold the needles firmly in position at the top dead centre and at the bottom dead centre.

Adjusting the needle carrier brake: Adjust brake spring length of the brakes so that measurement (X) is 28 mm.

Maintenance BASIC SETTING Setting the drives to the timing marks 1. Check the needle to ram settings, and if necessary correct. (See »Checking the needle position relative to the ram«).

2. Move the baler ram to its top dead center position so that the crank arms and the ram connecting rods are parallel to one another. The bore hole on the left hand crank arm must then be at the same height as the cap screw.

In this position all the timing marks should now line up with the drives and shafts.

TYING MECHANISM Adjusting knotter shaft and needles Note!

Perform all adjustments to the knotters with no twine threaded.

Adjusting side pressure of needles against knotter frame: Position the needles (1) on the needle carrier. Centre the needles in the slots and tighten the needles in position.

Torque of the M 10 hex. bolts (2) is 48,5 Nm (33 ft lb.).

In this position the marks (M) on the needles must be level with the deflector plate (A) (point 11). This check point can be seen by opening the twine boxes and looking through the holes provided for this purpose at the front toward the bottom. See detail (Y). If necessary correct the fine tuning via the tying gear.

Re-install universal drive shaft.

Carry out a tying cycle and have the ram do one stroke to check the setting.

Checking inside the bale chamber The setting is correct when the tips of the needles are flush with the top edge of fillers (F) in the bale chamber. The dimension (X) up to the face of the ram then is 30 mm to 35 mm, see detail (Y).

10 Ram stop The ram stop is fitted next to the main drive gearbox.

The ram stop protects the needles against damage when these stop in the bale chamber. If this occurs, the shear bolt of the main drive will shear off.

Danger!

Before adjusting the ram stop the synchronization of ram/needles must be checked and corrected, if necessary.

Setting the ram stop: Attention!

The rubber pressure springs (P) must be set to (Z) 57.5 ± 1 mm.

The rubber pressure springs must all be of same colour and should always be replaced as a set.

Maintenance 1. Trip the tying mechanism and turn the flywheel by hand in the direction of the arrow until the needles are in the bale chamber.

2. Turn the flywheel in opposite direction of rotation, until the crank arms (8) have just passed ram stop (9). The ram stops give way to the crank arms.

3. Again turn the flywheel by hand in the direction of arrow until crank arms (8) rest against the ram stops (9). In this position the ram stops (9) must correctly locate in the stop recesses of the crank arms (8). This can be seen by looking through the holes in the right hand side of the baler housing. If necessary, correct the setting of the spring loaded cylinder (10).

4. Again turn the flywheel in the opposite direction of rotation until the knotter shaft clutch engages.

This connects the needle drive line again.

5. Turn the flywheel by hand in direction of arrow, until the crank arms are located 135-5 mm (A) before the swivelled out ram stops (Fig. 13).

The red gauge (L) on the ram on the right hand machine side is in a position approximately between struts (S).

In this position roller (R) of lever (12) must touch control cam race (S). lf necessary, correct the setting by adjusting yoke (G) on tie rod (13). To do this, the needles must be moved back into the bale chamber. This is necessary to release the tension on the spring-loaded cylinders (10 and 14).

Once the crank arms are at a distance of 135-5 mm (A) to the ram stops, measurement (B) must be 5-2 mm. lf necessary, adjust spring-loaded cylinder (14) accordingly.

Trip the tying cycle and turn the flywheel by hand in the direction of arrow until the needles are in the upper area of the bale chamber.

15 Twine fingers Twine fingers (1) are actuated by linkages (2). When the needles are on their tying stroke, the fingers place the twine close to guides (3) to ensure that the knotter hooks get hold of the twine.

Adjusting the twine fingers: Adjust linkage (2) so that distance (B) between the centres of the ball heads is approx. 200 mm.

When adjusting the twine fingers (1) the point must rest on knotter plate (4). If necessary compensate any axial clearance (C) of the twine fingers with shims.

In this position, clearance (A) between twine finger (1) and the tip of twine guide (3) must be 0 ± 1 mm. lf necessary, correct the clearance by adjusting linkage (2).

– Then run the PTO-shaft with maximum speed (1000 rpm).

If the clutch does not engage automatically or disengages again after it has engaged: – Shut down the machine.

– Switch off the PTO-shaft.

– Check whether the machine is free of foreign objects and remove these, if necessary.

– Switch the machine back on.

If the feed rake has been blocked the rotor is automatically switched off in order to avoid damage to the chamber!

Maintenance PROPOSALS FOR WINTER STORAGE Preparation for winter storage of the big square baler after the harvest is necessary to maintain the invested capital for this machine over a long time. Proper and thorough care and maintenance in combination with the repair of worn or damaged parts will save money and time during restarting.

1. Clean all trash and dirt from the big square baler.

2. Clean all bearings externally from grease and dust.

3. When using high pressure/steam cleaning equipment for cleaning remove the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR from the baler 4. Thoroughly lubricate all grease points until the grease protrudes from the bearings (see Lubrication Chart). Then run the big square baler for a short time.

5. Clean and grease the chains.

6. Check the big square baler for wear and damage and have it repaired.

7. Paint tyres with a protective-type paint to prevent the rubber from deteriorating.

8. Store the baler under cover in a dry and weather protected place, which not used for the storage of fertilisers.

9. Jack the big square baler up to relieve the tires and adjust the specified tire pressure.

If the big square baler is not jacked up, the specified tire pressure must be increased by 1.0 bar.

10. Grease all bare metal parts on the tying mechanism and in the bale chamber.

11. Retract the hydraulic cylinder and grease the piston rod.

12. Clean corroded spots and repair paint damage.

Attention!

If the big square baler has to be washed down (which should be avoided if possible), all lubrication points must be lubricated after washing.

Then run the big square baler warm for a few minutes.

Cavities such as cable ducts should not be washed with water. Water can partly not be removed any more from such cavities and cause the formation of rust.

Central lubrication system CENTRAL LUBRICATION SYSTEM The central lubrication system consists of a pipe system which connects to all lubricating points.

A pump delivers the lubricant through the pipes to the grease points.

The central lubrication system is available either with a manual pump or with an electric automatic pump.

Central lubrication system with automatic pump (option for QUADRANT 2100 RF/RC) The central lubrication system with automatic pump is equipped with a 2 litre grease container and a pressure relief valve.

The pressure relief valve (D1) is situated on the pump unit.

(Fig. 1) One filling of the central lubrication system will last for approx. 50 hours of operation.

If grease emerges from the pressure relief valve stop the machine immediately and rectify the trouble.

Check the lubrication system daily!

The greasing cycles are programmed at the factory to meet normal operating conditions. Depending on the stress on the baler and on harvesting conditions, the intervals between the greasing cycles may be changed. See chapter »CLAAS COMMUNICATOR«.

The automatic control for interval calculation is activated when CLAAS COMMUNICATOR and main drive are switched on.

Note!

Starting baling operations or turning on the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR with the main drive running will always put the central lubrication system into operation.

Before climbing onto the baler for maintenance work or to eliminate malfunctions, always shut off tractor engine, remove ignition key and lock the flywheel.

The hose of the hydraulic emergency brake has come loose.

The baler has been disconnected from the tractor.

Reconnect the hydraulic hose.

No twine

The twine ball has no more twine

Put a new twine ball in

The twine has broken

Tie the twine ends with a knot

Reset the lever to initial position.

Replace the chain. Reconnect the baler to the tractor with the chain.

Note!

When the twine is tight again, the fault message goes out

Hydraulic fault

The pump for the baling pressure control works too frequently.

Possibilities: 1. frequent overloading

For 1 - 3.:

2. Driving speed is too high

The fault message goes out automatically after about 2 min. The control then continues to work automatically.

3. The PTO is switched on, but the baler continues to run with the flywheel

Tying failure

4. Leak in the hydraulic system to the bale chamber

Find the leak and seal

5. Lack of oil

Top up oil in hydraulic oil reservoir (QUADRANT 2100 N)

6. Inner leak in valve

Tying fault 26 will appear if 2 tying orders are switched on in a period of 3 seconds.

Remedy

– Confirm the fault message.

– Turn the straw wheel backwards until the measured bale length shown on the Claas Communicator is less than the set bale length.

– Wait for 10 seconds.

– Switch off the Claas Communicator.

– Switch on the Claas Communicator again.

Tying fault 27 appears if mechanical tying (visible through needle movement) was activated without an electrical signal (the sensor did not register or send information).

Tying fault 28 appears if an electric signal (electric tying) was activated while the needles stayed in home position.

Tying fault 29 appears if the needles in the bale chamber are blocked while mechanical and electric tying was activated.

– Confirm fault message by pressing push button (R), tying is blocked.

– Shut down the PTO drive, shut down the engine and pull out the ignition key.

– Fault finding: was the faut caused by a mechanical problem? was the faut caused by an electrical problem?

– Correct fault.

– Switch on machine again (key, engine and PTO).

– Restart work.

Attention!

Do not ingore the fault message, otherwise, fault 26 will appear.

NOTE: The fault is indicated by grease leaking from the safety valve.

Before climbing onto the baler for maintenance work or to eliminate malfunctions, always shut off tractor engine, remove ignition key and lock the flywheel.

Determine and eliminate the cause of the fault as follows: 1. Start the central lubrication system.

2. On the main distributor (HV) loosen all lubrication lines to the sub-distributors, one after the other. If e.g. grease emerges from port (5) of main distributor (HV), the blockage is most likely in the lubrication circuit of sub-distributor (NS) »needle carrier«.

3. Restart pump.

4. Loosen all lubrication hoses on the sub-distributor »needle carrier«, one after the other. lf e.g. grease emerges at port (1) of the sub distributor for the »needle carrier« (NS), the clogging is to be found in the grease line to the connecting rod, bottom L/H side.

Note!

When checking the individual outlet ports, leave each port open for a prolonged period, as grease is pushed into the grease line only once per rotation of the pump motor due to the screw like shape of the blades. Several rotations are therefore necessary to accomplish a complete run of all banks.

Remedy 1. Pump through a clogged line or bearing point using a hand or compressed air operated grease gun.

If a distributor is blocked no grease will emerge from any of the ports.

2. Replace grease bank or clean as follows: – Disconnect all pipe fittings.

– Remove the plunger plugs.

– Drive out plunger, if possible, using a soft metal drift (diameter less than 6 mm).

Note!

The plungers are precision fit into the distributor bores. After removing the plungers, mark them according to position and direction for reinstallation.

They must not be confused during installation.

– Thoroughly clean the distributor body in a grease dissolving cleanser and blow out with compressed air.

– Use a pin to clear the inclined channels (1.5 mm in diameter) at the thread ends of the plunger bores.

– Clean the grease bank again and blow out.

– Pump through the grease bank, preferably with oil, several times using a hand pump. The pressure in the distributor must thereby not exceed 25 bar. Otherwise replace the distributor.

Scorched cables in the CLAAS COMMUNICATOR (circuit board for E-STOP switch)

Fuse protection in the wiring loom of tractor to baler 25 A

15 A or 20 A, use maximum 25 A fuse.

There may be foreign consumers connected to the baler's electronics that leas to an abnormal increase in the current consumption.

Remove any connected foreign consumers.

Most of the knotting faults have only minor reasons and can most be rectified by yourself.

These faults are mostly caused by twine quality, twine guidance and needle position.

These following fault symbols shall help to detect the cause of a fault.
