1 Introduction INTRODUCTION This operator's manual provides information on the use, adjustment, and operation of your CLAAS drum mower.

Follow advice on correct maintenance and servicing to ensure maximum performance and a long service life of your machine.

In addition, assembly of your machine and regular inspections must be carried out by your specialist workshop. Failure to carry out maintenance work, or incorrect operation will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of valuable time.

Make use of the experience and latest knowledge embodied in this machine by operating and maintaining it properly, then your cutting mechanism, mower unit will always produce good results.

3 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE Please note that the CLAAS drum mower is also simply called 'machine' or 'mower' in the following chapters.

To prevent accidents, this operator's manual must be read by everyone who uses the machine and who deals with maintenance, servicing or inspection.

Some safety devices, covers have been removed only for better presentation of the machine in diagrams. All safety devices, covers must be attached before operating the machine!

It is advisable to pay particular attention to the chapter titled “Safety Rules” and “Before operation”.

The use of spare parts, accessories and additional equipment which is not originally manufactured, checked and released by CLAAS can have a negative effect on specific design features of the CLAAS machine or on its operability, thereby impairing active and/or passive operating safety, as well as safety at work (accident prevention).

CLAAS will in no way be liable for damage or personal injury caused by the use of non-original CLAAS parts, accessories and additional equipment.

Technical specifications, dimensions and weights are understood with the usual tolerances.

IMPORTANT: Front, rear, right and left are always understood as in the direction of travel.

Preface IDENTIFICATION PLATE When ordering spare parts, and in all technical queries, please state the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2), the model and the serial number.

This is necessary to ensure that you receive the correct spare parts.

The identification plate (1) with the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2) is mounted on the right hand side of the machine trough.

ATTENTION!

Before putting the machine into operation, read the operator's manual and follow the safety precautions!

Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so could result in damage to the machine.

INTENDED USE

– Measures to prevent damage to the machine.

The CLAAS DRUM MOWER is designed solely for use in customary agricultural operations (“intended use”).

The mower is suitable and intended for cutting grass on natural or sown meadows.

Use in any other way is considered as contrary to the intended use. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage resulting from this; the risk is entirely that of the operator.

Designated use also includes observing the service, maintenance and repair conditions as prescribed by the manufacturer.

NOTE! Sign to indicate instructions for a more efficient and economic use of the machine.

ENVIRONMENT! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed in order to avoid damage to the environment.

The CLAAS mower unit may be used, maintained and repaired only by persons who have been trained in its use and who are aware of the dangers involved.

Danger to the environment is caused by irregular handling and incorrect disposal of toxic material (e.g. old oil).

Observe the pertinent accident prevention regulations and other generally acknowledged regulations regarding safety and occupational health, as well as the regulations and standards relevant to motor vehicles and traffic.

The warning and instruction signs on the machine provide important recommendations for safe operation. These instructions involve your safety – observe them at all times!

Any arbitrary modifications carried out will relieve the manufacturer of all liability for any resulting damage or injury.

IDENTIFICATION OF WARNING AND DANGER SIGNS All parts of this manual having to do with your safety or the safe operation of the machine are marked with the following signs. Please pass all safety instructions on to other users, too.

DANGER! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so would cause danger to life and limb to the operator and the people around him.

– Preventive measures.

GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION INSTRUCTIONS Basic rule: Always check the operating and road safety of tractor and machine before starting up!

General: In addition to the advice contained in this operator's manual, comply with the general rules on safety and accident prevention.

The warnings and signs provide important instructions for safe operation; observing these instructions will ensure your safety!

Follow the regulations in force when using public roads!

Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions, as it will be too late once you have set off.

An adequate safe distance must be maintained from the cutting tools while working!

Safety Rules Safe operation of the mower unit is only possible through appropriate use of the cutting blades according to directions. The special tools supplied with the equipment are to be used for assembly.

Check the mower unit every time for damaged, missing and worn cutting blades and replace cutting blades if necessary!

Only replace missing and damaged mower blades in sets as specified by the manufacturer to prevent danger resulting from imbalance!

Check the parts fastening the blades on every change of the cutting blades according to regulations specified by the manufacturer and replace if necessary!

Above all, it is important to check the amount of wear on the internal radius caused by the mower blades. Replace the blade holder with a new one with an unused blade retaining pin latest after achieving a groove depth of 3 mm, i.e. if the internal radius is reduced by 3 mm.

It is also necessary to check the rivets of the mower pin in the mower blade holder, and the wear of the outer edge of the mower blade holder. If necessary, all the mower blade holders of the mower drums must be replaced by new mower blade holders.

The protective canvasses must be checked regularly and worn or damaged protective canvasses must be replaced!

Protective equipment on the mower unit, for example canvases and hoods, protect against flying stones and the like as well as from access to dangerous areas. For this reason they must be placed in safety position before starting work!

Squashing and shearing points arise while the mower unit is being swivelled from the transport position into the working position and vice versa.

For this reason, do not step into the area between the tractor and the mower unit. The swivelling process must be carried out when the mower unit is in horizontal position.

The glide discs must be on the ground before putting into operation and while working!

Stones and similar objects can be flung about even when the mower unit is being used correctly. Therefore, nobody should remain in the danger area.

Special care is required when working near roads and buildings!

The working tools of the mower unit continue to run even after switching off the drive. Do not stand close to them until they have stopped.

If you have encountered an obstacle, stop the mower unit immediately and check for damage!

Wear close-fitting clothing when working on the front attachment. Do not wear loose clothing!

Keep the machine clean to prevent fire!

Before starting and before putting it into operation, check the area around the machine (children!).

Ensure that you have an adequate view!

Passengers must not be carried on the machine while working or during transport!

Always connect the machine correctly to the tractor and connect and secure the machine to the prescribed couplings!

Always place the jack in the appropriate position when hitching and unhitching the machine – stability!

Use special care when hitching the machine to the tractor and when unhitching the machine!

Make sure that balance weights are correctly fixed at the provided points!

Observe the permissible transport dimensions!

Observe the maximum permissible axle loads and total weights!

Check and mount transport equipment – such as lights, warning devices, and if required protecting devices and guards!

Operating devices (ropes, chains, linkages etc.) of remotely controlled mechanisms must be positioned in such a way that they do not trigger unintentional operation in any transport or operating position!

For road travel, prepare the machine and lock any moving parts as prescribed by the manufacturer!

Never leave the operator's platform when driving!

Always adapt your ground speed to the ground conditions! Avoid making sharp turns when driving up or down slopes or when driving across the slope!

The operating, steering and braking behaviour will be affected by the trailed machine! Therefore ensure adequate steering and braking power!

When making turns, always take into consideration the width and/or inertia of the machine!

Operate the machine only when all guards are fitted and correctly positioned.

Ensure all persons stand clear of the operating area and of the danger area!

Do not stand in rotation and swivel area of machine!

Check for pinch and shear points on parts that are operated with external force, for instance by hydraulics!

Safety Rules Secure machine before leaving the tractor! Lower mounted attachments fully to the ground! Switch off engine and remove ignition key.

Never let anyone stand between the tractor and the machine without securing the vehicle against rolling away by putting on the parking brake and/or through the use of wheel chocks!

ATTACHED MACHINES Before attaching the machines or detaching the machines from the three-point linkage, move the control lever to a position in which unintentional raising or lowering is not possible!

When attaching mounted machines to the three-point linkage, the linkage categories of tractor and machine must match, otherwise make necessary modifications!

There is risk of injury due to crushing or shearing in the area of the three-point linkage!

Do not stand between tractor and machine when operating the remote control unit for the three-point linkage!

PTO OPERATION Only use universal drive shafts specified by the manufacturer!

Always ensure that the tube guards for the universal drive shaft and PTO stub shaft are installed and in a good condition! Ensure that the guards properly cover the universal drive shafts, both, in the transport and in the working position!

Always disengage the PTO shaft, stop the engine and remove the main switch key before attaching or detaching the universal drive shaft!

An overload or free wheel coupling is to be attached on the device side when using universal drive shafts with overload or free wheel couplings which are not covered by the protective equipment on the tractor!

Always ensure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and securely fastened!

Prevent the universal drive shaft gear from rotating by attaching chains.

Always ensure that there is adequate sideways locking of the tractor three point rod when the machine is in transport position!

Before engaging the PTO shaft, ensure that the selected speed and the direction of rotation of the tractor's PTO shaft matches the permissible speed and the direction of rotation of the drive assembly of the machine!

When driving on the road with raised machine, lock the control lever against lowering!

Always ensure that nobody is in the danger area of the machine before switching on the PTO shaft!

ATTACHED DEVICES

Never engage the PTO shaft when the engine has stopped!

Secure the devices from rolling away.

Observe maximum permissible load capacity of couplings and swinging drawbar or hitch facility!

When hitching the machine to the drawbar, ensure that there is sufficient movement at the hitch point!

When operating the PTO shaft nobody must stand in the vicinity of the rotating PTO stub shaft or universal drive shaft!

Always disengage the PTO shaft when the turn angle is extreme or when the PTO drive shaft is not used!

Attention, after the PTO has been disengage, flywheel mass continues to run! Do not step too close to the machine during this time! You are only allowed to work on the machine when everything has stopped moving Cleaning, lubricating or adjustment of the PTO shaft driven machine or universal drive shaft is only permitted when the PTO shaft and engine are switched and the ignition key is removed!

When the universal drive shaft is not connected to the tractor, it must be kept on the storage yoke or suspended with a chain!

After uncoupling the universal drive shaft, push the protective guard on to the PTO stub shaft!

In case of damage, repair immediately before working with the machine!

Safety Rules HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

MAINTENANCE

The hydraulic system is under high pressure!

Repair, maintenance and cleaning work and elimination of malfunctions should only be performed when the drive and the are engine switched off!

When attaching hydraulic cylinders and motors, ensure the stipulated connection of the hydraulic hoses!

When connecting the hydraulic hoses to the tractor hydraulics, it is important to ensure that the hydraulics are depressurised both on the tractor side and the machine side!

For hydraulic function connections between the tractor and the machine, the coupling sleeves and plugs should be marked to avoid incorrect operation! Interchanging connections causes reversed functions (e.g. raise/lower) – Safety hazard!

Check hydraulic hose lines at regular intervals, and replace them in case of damage or ageing!

Replaced hydraulic hose lines must correspond to the technical requirements of the equipment manufacturer!

– Remove the ignition key!

Wait until the mower drum has come to a complete stop.

Repair work on prestressed energy accumulators (springs, hydraulic accumulators etc.) should be carried out in specialist workshops and with suitable tools!

Regularly check nuts and screws for tight fit and tighten them, if necessary!

When performing maintenance work on the raised machine, ensure that it is supported safely using suitable supports!

Use suitable tools and wear safety gloves when replacing working parts!

Checking for leaks is hazardous. Use suitable aids to check for leaks!

Dispose of used oil and grease according to regulations!

Fluid escaping under high pressure (hydraulic oil) can penetrate the skin and cause serious injuries. If any fluid penetrates the skin, consult a doctor immediately!

– Risk of infections!

Always disconnect the power supply before working on the electrical system!

Before performing any work on the hydraulic system, lower the machine, release the pressure from the hydraulic system and stop the engine!

Guards and protecting devices that are subject to wear must be checked at regular intervals and replaced in time!

TYRES

Spare parts must at least comply with the technical standards required by the manufacturer of the machine! Original spare parts, for instance, are manufactured to meet these standards!

When working on tyres make sure the machine is safely parked and secured so that it will not roll away (use wheel chocks)!

Before performing electrical welding work on the tractor and mounted machines, always disconnect the leads from the battery and alternator!

Fitting tyres and wheels requires special training and expert knowledge and the correct tools!

SOUND PRESSURE LEVEL

Repair work on tyres on wheels must only be carried out by professionals and with correct tools!

If the sound pressure level in the driver's ear exceeds 85 dB (A) (see “Specifications”), then ear muffs must be worn.

Check the air pressure regularly! Observe the recommended tyre pressure!

Safety Rules

Safety Rules SAFETY DECALS WITH PICTORIALS Safety decals are attached to the danger zones of the machine. These safety decals help to alert persons to hazards which can cause personal injury. The pictorials provide instructions to avoid the hazard.

These safety signs, their placement on the machine and a brief explanatory text are shown on the following pages.

The CLAAS part number of every decal is stated ahead of the text.

The figure in ( ) refers to the adjacent picture and indicates the correct location of the decal on the machine.

Safety decals that are damaged or cannot be recognised any more must be replaced immediately by new ones.

When parts that have decals are replaced, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

Specifications AXLE LOADS, MINIMUM BALLAST AND TOTAL WEIGHT CALCULATION The front axle of the tractor must always be loaded with a minimum of 20% of the empty weight of the tractor.

The attachment of machines in the front and rear three point hitch may not exceed the permissible total weight, permissible axle loads and the tyre carrying capacities of the tractor.

Ensure that these requirements are met by performing the following calculations or by weighing the tractor-machine combination.

5. Only engage the drive when the mowing unit is in the lowered (working) position.

7. Use safety chains to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

8. Check that the tractor's PTO speed matches the machine's p.to. speed.

10. Check safety curtains for signs of wear or damage.

11. After attaching the mower unit and connecting the universal drive shaft, carefully check whether the universal drive shaft is moving freely, for this: • Carefully raise and lower the machine.

12. Switch mower unit to working position.

13. Engage the tractor p.t.o shaft at idle speed and the machine discharged in the working position only.

14. Never let the mower unit run without supervision.

15. Order all persons out of the danger area. Should anyone approach the mower, switch it off immediately.

– Nobody should be between the tractor and the machine.

Adjusting the universal drive shaft Because of the wide variety of PTO shaft lengths on the individual tractor models, it is often necessary to adjust the length of the universal drive shaft.

Adapting the length Pull the universal drive shaft apart and push the halves of the universal drive shaft with the free wheel mechanism and the plate clutch onto the drive shaft of the machine and the other half onto the PTO shaft of the tractor.

Swivel the machine into working position. Place the two halves of the universal drive shaft next to each other and check the lengths with the machine in the lowered and in the lifted position.

The more the suspension springs are extended when lowering the machine, due to a shorter chain length, the higher is the weight relief (reduced ground pressure).

The less the suspension springs are extended, due to increased chain length, the lower is the weight relief (increased ground pressure).

This causes the mower to rest more heavily on the outer skid plates, which gives better adaptation to surface unevennesses at right angles to the driving direction.

ATTENTION! When working with the front-mounted mower, air intake screens and the tractor's radiator can become obstructed.

This can lead to overheating of the tractor hydraulics and engine resulting damage!

– Clean the tractor's air intake screens and radiator several times a day.

– Reduce ground speed.

– Check if the mower blades can swing back on crashing into an obstacle.

Recommendations for environmental protection A simple change in the way we normally mow can help reduce the loss of wild animals.

At the same time, the quality of the mowed crop is increased.

ENVIRONMENT! If we mow from the outside inwards, wild animals have hardly any chance of escape!

– Mow from the inside outwards.

Drive to the middle of the lot and mow from the inside outwards.

The centre can be mowed if there is enough room to turn.

Wild animals thus have the chance of escaping outwards.

9 Maintenance IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS DANGER! Repair, maintenance and cleaning work, as well as the elimination of malfunctions should only be done with the PTO and engine switched off.

– Remove the ignition key!

DANGER! Repair, maintenance and cleaning work on the elevated machine should only ever be undertaken with when properly supported.

Lubrication Observe the specified oil-change intervals, and the correct oil grade in the gearbox. Use only good quality grease or oil to lubricate the machine. Clean the grease nipples before applying the grease gun.

Grease all points that require lubrication, observing the intervals specified in the lubrication chart.

The stipulated lubrication intervals apply to normal service conditions only. If the machine is operated under rough conditions, it must be lubricated more frequently.

Lubricate all universal joints from time to time.

ENVIRONMENT! Dispose of oil and grease according to regulations!

Protective devices (guard frames)

– Use appropriate supporting elements!

DANGER!

Hydraulic system DANGER! When working on the hydraulic system, always depressurise it first and lower the folded up rotors.

Fluid escaping under high pressure (hydraulic oil) can penetrate the skin and cause serious injuries. In such cases, see a doctor immediately to avoid serious infection!

Protective devices may only be opened when the PTO is disengaged, and the tractor's engine is switched off.

– Remove the ignition key!

Mount the guards again after completion of maintenance and repair work.

Check the guards at regular intervals.

Damaged protective devices must be replaced with new ones.

ENVIRONMENT! Dispose of oil and grease according to regulations!

Check hydraulic hose lines at regular intervals, and replace in case of damage or ageing! Replaced hydraulic hose lines must correspond to the technical requirements of the equipment manufacturer!

Repairs on the hydraulic system may be carried out only by authorised technical workshops.

Bolts Check all screws and bolts for tightness, and retighten if necessary.

Check that all split pins and roll pins are in place.

The springs are to be pre-tensioned so that there is a gap of 1 - 2 mm between the spacing bush (1) and the disc (2).

This gap should be checked from time to time and be corrected if necessary by turning down both nuts (3).

Fig. 3 shows the tensioning device on the side of the V-belt pulleys.

On the gearbox side, the tensioning is to be carried out as follows:

Turn back both nuts (4). Turn the nuts (3) down until there is a gap of 1 - 2 mm between the spacing bush (1) and the disc (2), and a gap of 2 - 3 mm between the nuts (4) and the strap (5).

The V-belts can be checked once the guard plates have been removed.

Maintenance MOWER BLADES Replacing mower blades DANGER! Any work on the mower blades or their mountings may only be done when the PTO is disengaged, the engine is switched off, and the mower drums are fully stopped.

– Switch off mower drive.

– Switch off engine.

– Wait until the mower drums have come to a complete stop before leaving the driving seat.

– Remove the ignition key!

– Wear gloves when working on the mower blades!

ATTENTION! Always check the mower blades before operation and after driving into an obstacle!

– Always check that the mower blades are correctly seated!

– Worn, damaged, or deformed blades must be replaced immediately.

– To prevent damage to the mowing unit due to unbalance, missing or damaged mower blades may only be replaced as a complete set per mower drum.

Replacement blades must meet the minimum technical requirements specified by CLAAS. This is guaranteed, if original CLAAS mower blades are used.

NOTE! Use only sharp mower blades for neat cutting.

Use of blunt blades requires more power and reduces the cutting quality.

Blunt blades can be turned over and mounted on the same mower drum, so that the blade's second cutting edge is used.

Maintenance To replace the mower blades:

• Insert the mounting lever (3) between the skid plate (6) and mower drum (5).

• Pull the mounting lever upwards, and remove the blade (4).

• Mount the new blade so that the lower blade edge points in the mower drum's direction of rotation.

Angled, reversible mower blades: In order to use the second cutting edge of an angled blade, it only need to be turned upside down. Hereby, ensure that the lower edge (7) of the blade (4) points in the mower drum's direction of rotation.

Maintenance MOWER BLADE HOLDERS Every time the mower blades are replaced, the inner radius of the blade mounting stud must be checked for wear grooves caused by the blade. At the latest when the wear groove in the stud has reached a depth of 3 mm, all the mounting parts must be replaced, including a new mounting stud.

Similarly, check the rivet heads of the mounting studs in the blade holder for tightness, and for signs of wear on the outer edge of the holder (arrow) (Fig. 15).

Damaged or worn blade holders must always be replaced.

Replacement blades must meet the minimum technical requirements specified by CLAAS. This is guaranteed, if original CLAAS mower blades are used.

Never attempt to weld a broken blade holder.

If necessary, all the blade holders of the mower drum must be replaced.

(Fig. 15) If the mower drum shows signs of wear in the area of the mower blades, all blade holders must be remounted in the other hole pattern.

UNIVERSAL DRIVE SHAFT DANGER! Only work on the universal drive shafts with drive turned off and engine at standstill.

– Remove the ignition key!

The drive shaft must be serviced according to the instructions of the drive shaft manufacturer (see manufacturer's operator's manual).

Observe the safety instructions of the manufacturer!

Maintenance General information for universal drive shafts DANGER! Never operate universal drive shafts without or with damaged guard.

– Mount shaft guard and tube guards.

– Secure guard against rotating!

– The universal drive shafts must only be operated when in good condition.

Immediately replace damaged or missing tube guards, universal drive shaft guards and securing chains.

Protect the universal drive shafts from the influence of weather.

After the harvest season, clean and lubricate universal drive shafts in all parts thoroughly.

The guard tubes must be greased to prevent freezing during winter.

After an extended period of non-use, relubricate the universal drive shafts before using and check that they function properly.

Maintaining the plate clutch After extended periods of non-use, ventilate the clutch.

Fully tighten the hex. nuts of the studs.

Loosen the stuck friction discs by rotating the clutch hub by hand.

Then turn back the hex. nuts of the studs to the thread.

The settings of the swath discs should be checked from time to time.

The two swath discs must be adjusted as follows:

The distance between the swath disc (1) and the feed slat (2) should be about 15 mm. Adjust by displacing the tube (3).

Loosen screws (4) for this purpose. The distance from the discs to the cutting disc should also be 15 mm.

Adjust by changing the position of the U-washers (6) between the bracket (7) and the bearing tube (8).

Distance of the swath discs (10) to the ground = 30 mm.

To adjust the disc, loosen the screws (9) and align the swath disc accordingly.

Inclined alignment of the swath discs: On the CORTO 3100 FN, the swath discs must be horizontal or up to 30 mm swung inwards at the bottom (Fig. 24).

Adjust by releasing the clamping screws (4) and rotating the tube (3) (Fig. 23).

On very uneven ground, the rear swath discs can be adjusted in height by relocating the screw (9) (Fig. 23) in the different holes.

END OF SEASON STORAGE 1. Clean the dirt off the machine.

2. Drain the oil from the gearboxes and the cutter bar and refill with new oil up to the prescribed oil level.

3. Thoroughly lubricate all lubrication points until the grease spills out of the bearings – see Lubrication chart, page 10.1.

Let the mower unit run for a short time.

4. Check machine for wear and damage and have it repaired if necessary.

5. Clean rusted locations and touch up damaged paint.

6. Store machine in a dry room protected from the weather and where no fertiliser manure is stored.
