1.1.2 Information about this Operator's Manual Read this Operator's Manual thoroughly in order to make yourself familiar with safe and correct operation, maintenance and transportation of the machine. This avoids injuries and machine damage. If you cannot understand parts of the Operator's Manual, contact a CLAAS Sales Partner.

This Operator's Manual is part of the machine and must be handed over to the buyer of the machine in case of resale. In case of loss or damage, the Operator's Manual and the safety decals applied to the machine can be reordered from a CLAAS Sales Partner. This Operator's Manual is also available in other languages.

1.1.5 Qualified specialist workshop Qualified specialist workshops have the knowledge, tools and skills necessary to perform any required work properly, such as: • Maintenance work • Repair work • Installation and retrofitting In accordance with CLAAS regulations, the qualified specialist workshops keep a record of the work that has been carried out. This documentation may be required for warranty claims.

1.1.6 Notes on warranty Warranty claims result from the conditions of sale agreed with the CLAAS Sales Partner.

Before delivery, the specialist workshop has carried out a pre-delivery inspection in accordance with the service booklet. The specialist workshop must confirm this inspection and delivery to the customer in the delivery advice. The instructions in this Operator's Manual, the service booklet and the post-harvest check or annual check must be observed. Failure to observe these instructions may result in loss of warranty claims.

Maintenance work that is not described in this Operator's Manual may be carried out only by a qualified specialist workshop.

1.2 Intended use 129348-002

1.2.1 Intended use The CLAAS swather is designed exclusively for professional use according to recognized rules of agricultural practice in agricultural harvesting operations of forage plants.

The swather is an agricultural machine that is hitched to a tractor approved/released by the manufacturer and suitable and intended for swathing forage plants on fields while travelling. Forage plants include crops such as grass, lucerne and cereal straw.

The swather swathes previously mowed or turned and down forage plants on the field, using a swathing unit.

The forage plants are put down in the middle of or laterally next to the swather for further processing.

When travelling on public roads, the swather can be hitched to the rear of a tractor approved/released by the manufacturer and carried along, depending on the provisions of the applicable road vehicle regulations.

This machine may be operated, serviced and repaired only by persons familiar with the machine and acquainted with the function-related hazards involved in handling the machine (accident prevention).

The intended use also includes compliance with the information provided in the Operator's Manual and respecting the operational, maintenance and repair conditions specified by the manufacturer.

The relevant accident prevention regulations as well as the other generally recognised safety-related, occupational medicine and road traffic rules shall be respected by both the user and the owner.

Any use beyond this is considered <unintended>, and solely the user, not the manufacturer, is liable for any resulting damage.

1.2.2 Reasonably foreseeable misuse Machine use outside of the intended use is a use not provided for by the machine manufacturer and therefore constitutes a misuse in the sense of the Machinery Directive. The manufacturer will not be liable for damage resulting from such misuse, but instead the user will be solely responsible.

Such misuse of the CLAAS swather includes: • Performing adjustment, cleaning and Maintenance work contrary to the information provided in the Operator's Manual • Performing troubleshooting and service while drives and/or the diesel engine are running

2.2.1 Importance of Operator's Manual The Operator's Manual is an important document and a part of the machine. It addresses the user and contains safety-relevant information. Only the procedures specified in the Operator's Manual are safe. ► Read and observe the safety chapter of the machine before using it for the first time. ► Read and observe the relevant chapters of the Operator's Manual before starting work. ► When failing to understand content or when help is needed, contact a CLAAS Sales Partner.

2.2.2 Observing safety decals and warnings Safety decals on the machine and warnings in the Operator's Manual warn you of hazards in danger areas and are important parts of the machine's safety equipment. Missing or unidentifiable safety decals increase the risk of serious and fatal injuries. ► Read and observe the safety instructions and warnings in the Operator's Manual and the safety decals on the machine before putting the machine into operation. ► Clean any dirty safety decals. ► Replace any missing and unidentifiable safety decals with new ones immediately.

2.2.3 Requirements for all persons working with the machine All persons working with the machine must meet the minimum requirements below in order to avoid accidents: • They are physically capable of controlling the machine.

• They are healthy and do not suffer from tiredness.

• They are not under the influence of drugs.

• They can carry out the work described in this Operator's Manual safely.

• They understand the functions of the machine and can identify and avoid hazards involved in the work.

They have understood the Operator's Manual and • can put the information provided in the Operator's Manual into action.

• They are familiar with the safe driving of vehicles.

• For road travel, they are familiar with the relevant road traffic rules and have the necessary driver's licence.

2.2.4 Children in danger Children cannot judge hazards and behave unpredictably. This is why children are particularly endangered. ► Never allow children to accompany you on the machine. ► Keep children away. ► Before starting off and before starting any machine movements, ensure that there are no children in the hazard area.

2.2.5 Hazard areas The adjacent image shows the hazard areas around the machine: The following major hazards are present in these areas:

• The machine may start moving or roll away and run someone over.

• Accidentally operating the power lift may cause the machine to move, creating a dangerous situation.

• Defective or unsecured electrical lines may cause fatal electric shocks.

• Defective or unsecured hydraulic or pneumatic lines may come loose and fly around. Hydraulic oil may escape under high pressure and cause serious injury to the skin or face.

• An exposed PTO shaft or a damaged or incorrectly fitted drive shaft may catch and entangle clothing.

• Machine parts may rotate or swivel when the drive is switched on.

• Hydraulically lifted machine parts may lower slowly without being noticed.

• Foreign bodies in the crop may be shot up into the air and cause physical injury.

Failure to pay attention to the hazard area may cause serious physical injury or death. ► Keep persons away from the hazard area of the machine. ► Only switch the drives and the engine on if there are no persons present in the hazard area. ► Switch off the drives and engine immediately if a person enters the hazard area. ► Before working in front of or behind the machine and in the tractor hazard area: Switch off and secure tractor and machine.

2.2.6 Staying between the tractor and the machine When staying between the tractor and the machine, persons may be seriously injured or even killed by the tractor rolling away or by machine movements. ► Prior to any work between the tractor and the machine: Shut down and secure the tractor and the machine.

Page 44 This also applies to short-time checks. Many serious accidents are due to carelessness and running machinery. ► When actuating the power lift, keep all persons away from the motion range of the power lift.

2.2.7 Persons riding on the machine Persons riding on the machine may be seriously injured or fall off and be run over by the machine.

Persons riding on the machine may be hit and injured by objects thrown into the air by the machine. ► Never let other persons travel on the machine at the same time.

2.2.9 Risk of injury from rotating shafts Persons may be caught, pulled in and seriously injured by a turning shaft.

► Ensure that the safety devices are fitted and fully functional. ► Ensure that no persons are present in the hazard area of the PTO shaft and the universal drive shaft. ► Wear tightly-fitting clothing. ► Maintain a sufficient overlap of PTO shaft guard, profile tube and universal drive shaft guard. ► Let the universal drive shaft locks engage. ► Secure the universal drive shaft guard against rotating along by fitting the chains. ► When the angle becomes too large, shut down the PTO shaft. The machine may be damaged.

Parts can fly away and injure persons. ► Shut down the PTO shaft when it is not needed.

When using an adapter between the tractor's PTO shaft and the machine's universal drive shaft: ► Do not exceed the maximum PTO speed. ► Check the protective guard on the tractor PTO shaft.

2.2.10 Structural changes Structural changes and extensions could adversely affect the functionality and operational safety of the machine. This may seriously injure or even kill persons. ► Structural changes and extensions must be approved by CLAAS. 158625-009

2.2.11 Optional equipment and spare parts Optional equipment and spare parts not meeting CLAAS requirements may impair the operational safety of the machine and cause accidents. ► Use only original CLAAS equipment and spare parts or equipment and spare parts meeting CLAAS requirements. ► Please contact a CLAAS Sales Partner if you have any questions regarding equipment items or spare parts.

2.2.12 Control of the machine while it is running While the machine is running, it requires that the driver is able to intervene quickly at any time. The machine may otherwise make uncontrolled movements and seriously injure or kill persons.

2.2.14 Technical condition Improper maintenance may impair the operational safety of the machine and cause accidents. Persons could be seriously or fatally injured as a result. ► Carry out all maintenance work at the specified service intervals.

2.2.15 Danger resulting from damage to the machine Damage to the machine may impair the operational safety of the machine and cause accidents. Persons could be seriously or fatally injured as a result. The machine parts listed below are particularly important for safety: • • • • • • •

2.2.16 Complying with technical limit values Failure to comply with the technical limit values of the machine may damage the machine. This may cause accidents and seriously injure or even kill persons.

2.2.17 Danger from machine parts running on After the drives have been switched off, machine parts may continue to run and could seriously injure or even kill persons. ► Before approaching the machine, wait for machine parts that continue rotating to come to a complete stop.

2.2.18 Keeping the safety devices functional When safety devices are missing or damaged, moving machine parts or objects flying away may seriously injure or even kill persons. ► Replace all damaged safety devices. ► Refit any safety devices and other parts dismounted prior to putting into operation and set them to their protective position. ► When in doubt if all safety devices are properly fitted and functional, have a qualified specialist workshop carry out a check.

2.2.19 Personal protective equipment Wearing personal protective equipment is an important safety component. Missing or unsuitable personal protective equipment increase the risk of health damage and injuries of persons. Personal protective equipment includes e.g.: • • • ►

2.2.20 Wearing suitable clothing Loose clothing increases the danger of being caught on or entangled in rotating parts and the danger of getting caught on protruding parts. Persons could be seriously or fatally injured as a result. ► ► ► ►

Never wear rings, necklaces or other jewellery.

Wear a hair net if you have long hair.

Wear solid shoes or safety shoes.

2.2.21 Removing dirt and loose objects Loose objects and objects not belonging to the machine may fall off the machine or be ejected, causing injury to persons. ► Before starting, remove dirt, harvesting residues and loose objects such as hay residues or tools from the machine.

2.2.22 Preparing the machine for road travel Failure to properly prepare the machine for road travel could lead to serious road traffic accidents. ► Always prepare the machine for road travel before travelling on the road.

2.2.23 Hazards when driving on the road and in the field The fitted or hitched machine changes the driving behaviour of the tractor. The driving properties also depend on the following factors: • Operating condition • Filling or loading condition • Ground The machine may tip when driving on a slope. This may cause accidents and persons may be seriously injured or even killed.

To maintain control of the tractor and the hitched machine, the driver must adapt the ground speed and the driving behaviour to the changed conditions. ► Observe the measures for driving on the road and the field.

2.2.24 Parking the machine safely An uneven or soft surface impairs the stability of the unhitched machine. The unhitched machine can roll away or tip over. Persons may be suffer bruises and can even get killed. ► Park the machine only on firm, level ground. ► Before carrying out any adjusting, repair, maintenance and cleaning work, ensure that the machine is standing securely. If in doubt, support the machine. ► Use wheel chocks to secure the machine against rolling away.

2.2.25 Unsupervised parking An unsupervised, insufficiently secured tractor with hitched machine represents a hazard for persons and playing children. ► Shut down and secure the tractor and the machine before leaving.

2.2.26 Unsuitable operating materials Operating materials which do not meet CLAAS requirements may impair operational safety and cause accidents. ► Use only operating materials meeting the requirements.

2.2.27 Safe handling of operating materials and auxiliary materials Improper handling of operating materials and auxiliary materials may cause poisoning or even death.

Foodstuffs and fodder contaminated with operating materials are a health hazard. ► Store operating materials and auxiliary materials in a safe, locked area. Never store such substances near foodstuffs or fodder. ► Keep operating materials and auxiliary materials away from children. ► Store operating and auxiliary materials in their original containers.

► Dispose of empty containers responsibly and properly. ► Separate out contaminated food and fodder and dispose of it properly. Ensure that contaminated food and fodder does not end up in the food chain.

2.2.28 Environmental protection and disposal Operating and auxiliary materials may damage the environment and the health of persons. ► Use leak-proof and liquid-tight containers when draining operating and auxiliary materials. Do not use any foodstuff containers. ► Do not let operating materials escape into the environment. ► Absorb any escaped operating materials with absorbent material or with sand and fill it into a liquid-tight and marked container. ► Dispose of operating materials filled into containers and rags soiled with oil or grease responsibly and according to regulations issued by authorities.

2.2.29 Fire prevention A buildup of crop material, dust and other debris may occur during normal operation. The risk of buildup increases in very dry operating conditions or conditions where airborne crop material or crop dust is present. Any such buildup must be removed to ensure proper machine function and to reduce the risk of fire. ► At least once a day and at the end of the day, remove all trash and debris from the machine, especially around moving parts and hot components such as engine, transmission, exhaust, battery etc. ore frequent cleaning may be required depending on the operating environment and conditions. ► Perform all maintenance work at the prescribed maintenance intervals.

2.2.30 Lethal electrocution from overhead lines The machine may reach the height of overhead lines when working with implements or due to antennas.

This may cause voltage flash-over to the tractor and cause a fatal electric shock or fire. ► When working with implements or with an antenna, keep a sufficient distance from electric high-voltage lines. ► Never fold implements or antennas out or in near transmission towers and power lines. ► Never leave or access the tractor while it is beneath overhead lines.

2.2.31 Behaviour in case of voltage flash-over from overhead lines and when lightning strikes Voltage flash-overs and lightning strikes cause high electric voltages on the outside of the tractor and on the hitched implement. There are large voltage differences on the ground around the tractor/ implement combination. Large steps, laying down on the ground or supporting your hands on the ground may cause lethal electric currents (step voltage). ► Do not leave the cab. ► Do not touch any metal parts. ► Do not provide any conductive connection with earth. ► Warn persons: Do not approach the tractor/ implement combination. Electric voltages on the ground may cause heavy electrocution. ► Wait for help by professional rescue services. The overhead line must be switched off.

If persons must leave the cab despite a voltage flashover, e.g. because their lives are directly threatened by a fire: ► Jump away from the tractor. Land so that you can stand securely. ► Do not touch the outside of the tractor. ► Move away from the tractor in small steps.

2.2.32 Liquids under pressure The following liquids are under high pressure: • Hydraulic oil Liquids escaping under high pressure may penetrate the body through the skin and cause serious injuries.

► When a leak in a pressurised system is suspected, contact a qualified specialist workshop immediately. ► Keep your body and face away from leaks. ► Never search for leaks with your hands.

Even a hole the size of pinhead can lead to serious injuries. ► If liquids have penetrated the body, consult a doctor immediately. The liquid must be removed from the body as quickly as possible. Infection hazard!

2.2.33 Hot surfaces The following components may become hot during operation: • Diesel engine • Exhaust system • Hydraulic system Risk of burns! ► Keep a sufficient distance from hot surfaces. ► Wear protective gloves.

2.2.34 Only carry out work on the machine when it is stopped If the machine is not stopped, parts may move unintentionally or the machine may start moving.

Persons may be seriously injured or even killed. ► Switch off and secure the machine prior to carrying out any work on the machine such as adjustments, cleaning, preparations for road travel, preparations for fieldwork, maintenance or rectification of failure.

2.2.35 Maintenance operations and repairs Improper maintenance and repair work endanger operational safety. This may cause accidents and persons may be seriously injured or even killed. ► Carry out only work described in this Operator's Manual. Shut down and secure the tractor and machine prior to any work.

The LINER 500 T is a swather with a swathing rotor (1) that deposits a swath on the left side.

Picking-up / raking

The swathing rotor is driven by the tractor via the PTO shaft. The tine bars (2) have tines (3) fitted to them which move vertically above the ground, pick up the crop and transport it to the left side.

Depositing

A cam track control unit controls the tines and the crop is deposited next to the swathing rubber (4).

C

Adaptation

The swathing rotor with its chassis (5) adapts to uneven ground crosswise and longitudinal to the direction of travel.

NOTICE Cleaning of surfaces with decals using high-pressure jet cleaners.

The decals are damaged. ► Avoid cleaning with high-pressure cleaners. ► Clean surfaces only if a sufficient distance from the high-pressure jet cleaner is observed. ► Set the water pressure and the water temperature as low as possible. ► Do not subject the decals to mechanical loads during cleaning. ► Replace damaged and illegible decals (hazard warning signs / safety decals / letterings / identification plates) immediately.

• Do not use high-pressure jet cleaners and steam cleaners for cleaning cut-out clutches, bearing, hydraulic system and electric parts. Danger of damage and corrosion.

• The paint may be damaged by cleaning at excessive pressure. ► Before cleaning the machine with a high-pressure jet cleaner, grease the bearings. ► Carry out a short test run.

The water that has penetrated the bearings is forced out. ► Grease the bearings again so that a grease collar is visible.

The grease collar protects the bearing against the ingress of dirt, plant sap and water. ► When parking the machine outdoors for an extended period, clean the ram rods of hydraulic cylinders and then apply grease to them.

Before putting the machine into operation, remove ► the grease from the piston rods of the hydraulic cylinders.

9.9.3 Upkeep the machine ► Clean machinery to remove dirt and crop parts. ► Clean the piston rods of the hydraulic cylinders and then coat with grease. ► Clean the outside of all bearings from grease and dust. ► Grease all grease points thoroughly until the grease emerges from the bearings.

Let the machine run for a while. ► Top up lubricating oils / greases in the gearboxes up to the specified levels. ► Check the machine for wear and damage and have it serviced. ► Remove any rust, and repair paint damage. ► Paint tyres with a protective paint to prevent the rubber from deteriorating. ► Park the machine in a dry and weather-protected space where no chemical fertiliser is stored.

9.9.4 Check the fittings Missing, loose or damaged fastening elements may cause loss of safety devices and attachments. ► Replace any worn or damaged fastening material. ► Replace any missing fastening material. ► Remove rust and corrosion from the fastening material. ► Clean the fastening material only with a noncorrosive cleaner. ► Check if all bolts are tightly seated and retighten if necessary. ► Check if all cotter pins and expansion pins are in place.
