2 Introduction INTRODUCTION This manual provides information on the use, setting and servicing of the CLAAS rotary swather.

The advice on the care and servicing should be followed in order to obtain maximum performance and long service.

The assembly and the regular inspection of your machine should be performed by your specialist workshop. Neglect in maintenance and service and incorrect use will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of valuable time.

By correct operation and servicing you can make full use of the technical knowledge and experience with which your machine has been designed.

4 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE The instructions contained in this manual should be read carefully and observed by all persons concerned with the operation, maintenance and inspection of this machine in order to prevent accidents.

Especially the »Safety Instructions« and the »Before Operation« sections should be read with the utmost care and adhered to.

The use of spare parts, accessories and ancillary equipment which are not originally manufactured or not checked and approved by CLAAS, can change the specified design characteristics of the CLAAS machine or can detract from its functional performance with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive safety of the machine and its occupational safety standards (accident prevention).

CLAAS are in no way liable for any damage or personal injury caused through the use of other than original or approved CLAAS parts, accessories and ancillary equipment.

Technical specifications, dimensions and weights are understood with the usual tolerances. CLAAS reserve the right to make changes subsequently as technical developments continue. Responsibility for errors and omissions not accepted.

Front, rear, right and left refer to the direction of travel.

IDENTIFICATION PLATE 1 When ordering spare parts and in any correspondence please state the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2), the type and the serial number of your machine. This will enable your Dealer to always provide you with the correct spare parts.

You will find the identification plate (1) with the machine number (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2) on the left front of the longitudinal carrier.

Clothing worn by the operator must be close-fitting.

Avoid wearing loose jackets, shirts or ties.

Before putting the machine into operation, read the operator`s manual and follow the safety precautions.

No riders are allowed on the machine during operation and during transport.

CORRECT USE The CLAAS ROTARY SWATHER is designed solely for use in customary agricultural operations ("intended use").

The swather is designed and intended to handle stem crops spread over the ground!

Use in any other way is considered as contrary to the intended use. The manufacturer accepts no liability for any damage or injury resulting from this misuse and these risks must be born solely by the user.

Compliance with and strict adherence to the conditions of operation, service and repair as specified by the manufacturer also constitute essential elements for the intended use.

The CLAAS ROTARY SWATHER should be operated, serviced and repaired only by persons familiar with all its particular characteristics and acquainted with the relevant safety rules (accident prevention).

The accident prevention regulations, all other generally recognized regulations on safety and occupational medicine and the road traffic regulations must be observed at all times.

Any arbitrary modifications carried out on the machine will relieve the manufacturer of all liability for any resulting damage or injury.

GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION REGULATIONS Basic Rule: Always check the operating and road safety of tractor and machine before starting up.

General: In addition to the instructions contained in this operator`s manual, also observe the general safety and accident prevention regulations.

The warning and instruction signs on the machine provide important recommendations for safe operation. These instructions involve your safety observe them at all times.

Always comply with local traffic regulations when driving on public roads.

Before starting work, familiarize yourself with all the controls and instruments and their functions. During work or road travel it is too late!

5.1

Always connect the implement correctly to the tractor and connect and secure the machine to the prescribed couplings.

Always place the jack in the appropriate position when hitching and unhitching the machine (stability).

Use special care when hitching the machine to the tractor and when unhitching the machine.

Observe the maximum permissible axle loads and total weights.

Observe the permissible transport lengths, widths and heights.

Check and mount transport equipment such as lights, warning devices and, if required, guards, shields etc.

Operating devices (ropes, chains, linkages, etc.) of remotely controlled mechanisms must be positioned in such a way that they do not trigger unintentional operation in any transport or operating position.

For road transport, prepare the machine and lock any moving parts as prescribed by the manufacturer.

Never leave the operator`s platform when driving.

Always adapt your ground speed to the ground conditions. Avoid making sharp turns when driving up or down slopes or when driving across the slope.

The operating, steering and braking behaviour will be affected by the trailed machine. Therefore ensure adequate steering and braking power.

When making turns, always take into consideration the width and/or inertia of the implement.

Operate the machine only when all guards are fitted and in the correct position.

Ensure that all persons stand clear of the operating area of the machine. Safety hazard! Ensure that everybody keeps a safe distance away from the machine. Avoid injury from flying objects.

Do not remain in the turning and/or slewing area of the machine.

Beware of pinch and shear points on parts that are operated, for instance, by hydraulics or other sources.

Before leaving the tractor, ensure that the implement cannot roll away. Lower any mounted implements fully to the ground. Shut off the engine and remove the ignition key.

Safety instructions No-one must be allowed to stand between the tractor and the machine before the parking brake of the vehicle is applied and/or wheel chocks are used to prevent the unit from moving and rolling away.

Mounted machines Before attaching the machines to or detaching the machine from the 3-point linkage, move the control lever to a position in which unintentional raising or lowering is not possible.

When attaching mounted machines to the 3-point linkage, the linkage categories of tractor and machine must correspond or the necessary modifications must be performed.

A risk of injury due to crushing or shearing exists in the vicinity of the 3-point linkage.

Do not stand between tractor and machine when operating the remote control unit for the 3-point linkage.

Always ensure that the tractor 3-point linkage is adequately stabilized to prevent swaying with the machine in transport position.

During road transport with the machine raised, the control lever must be locked to prevent unintentional lowering of the machine.

Trailed machine Take precautions to prevent the machine from rolling away.

Observe maximum permissible load capacity of couplings and swinging drawbar.

When hitching the machine at the drawbar, ensure that there is sufficient movement at the hitch point.

PTO operation Only use universal drive shafts specified by the manufacturer.

Always ensure that the guards for the universal drive shaft and PTO stub shaft are installed and in good condition.

Ensure that the guards properly cover the universal drive shafts, both in the transport and in the working position.

Always disengage the PTO shaft, stop the engine and remove the main switch key (ignition key) before attaching or detaching the universal drive shaft.

When universal drive shafts with overload or freewheeling clutches are used which are not protected by the tractor`s guard, the overload or freewheeling clutches have to be installed next to the machine.

Prevent the universal drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft by attaching chains.

Before engaging the PTO shaft, ensure that the selected speed and the direction of rotation of the tractor`s PTO shaft matches the permissible speed and the direction of rotation of the drive assembly of the machine.

Before engaging the PTO shaft ensure everybody is clear of the machine and stands a safe distance away.

Never engage the PTO shaft while the tractor engine is switched off.

When operating the PTO shaft no-one must ever stand in the vicinity of the rotating PTO stub shaft or universal drive shaft.

Always disengage the PTO shaft when the turn angle is extreme or when the PTO drive shaft is not used.

DANGER: High-inertia implements run on after the PTO has been disengaged. SAFETY HAZARD! Allow sufficient time for the machine to run down to a halt.

Do not go near the machine until all mechanisms have stopped.

Never attempt to clean, lubricate, repair or adjust the PTO-drive or the universal drive shaft unless the PTO shaft has been disengaged, the engine has been switched off and the main key switch (ignition key) has been removed.

Whenever the universal drive shaft is not connected to the tractor it must be kept on the storage yoke.

After uncoupling the universal drive shaft, the protective guard must be pushed on to the PTO stub shaft.

In case of damage, the defective parts must be immediately repaired. The machine must not be operated with a damaged, faulty PTO shaft or universal drive shaft.

Hydraulic system The hydraulic system is under high pressure.

When connecting hydraulic cylinders ensure the hydraulic hoses are connected correctly.

All pressure must be released in the tractor hydraulic circuit and in the implement hydraulic circuit before connecting the hydraulic hoses to the tractor hydraulics.

Both male and female couplings of hydraulic function lines between tractor and baler should be marked to avoid operator errors. Confusing the couplings reverses the functions (e.g. raise/lower). Safety hazard!

Always make sure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and securely fastened.

Safety instructions Inspect hydraulic hoses regularly and replace damaged and deteriorated hoses with new ones.

Replacement hoses must meet the technical requirements specified by the manufacturer.

Checking for leaks is hazardous. Use suitable aids to check for leaks. Beware of personal injury.

Escaping fluid (hydraulic oil) under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. If any fluid penetrates into skin, consult a doctor immediately as otherwise serious infections may result.

Before performing any work on the hydraulic system, lower the machine, release the pressure from the hydraulic system and stop the engine.

Tyres Fitting tyres and wheels requires special training and expert knowledge and the correct tools.

Always ensure that the machine is safely parked and secured so that it will not roll away (use wheel chocks to block wheels).

Repair work on tyres and wheels must only be carried out by professionals and with correct tools.

Check tyre pressures regularly. Observe the recommended tyre pressure.

Maintenance Repair, service and cleaning work and the elimination of malfunctions should only be performed with the drive and engine switched off. Remove the main switch key (ignition key).

Wait until the machine stops rotating!

Do not attempt to repair pretensioned or prestressed energy accumulators (springs, hydraulic accumulators, etc.) unless you have the proper equipment and experience to perform the job safely. Such repairs should preferably be performed only in specialist workshops.

Regularly check nuts and bolts for tight fit and tighten them as necessary.

When performing service work on the raised machine, ensure that it is supported safely using suitable supports.

Guards and shields that are subject to wear must be inspected at regular intervals and replaced in good time by new ones.

Spare parts must at least comply with the technical standards required by the manufacturer of the implement. Original spare parts, for instance, are manufactured to meet these standards.

Before performing any electrical welding work on the tractor and mounted implements, always disconnect the leads from the battery and alternator.

Noise level If the noise level at the driver’s ear is more than 85 dB (A) (see »Technical data«), he must wear an ear protection.

IDENTIFICATION OF WARNINGS AND DANGERS In this operator's manual, all text passages or graphics concerning your own safety and the safety of the machine have been marked with the following symbols. Please supply all safety instructions to any other user.

When replacing working parts, always use suitable tools and wear safety gloves.

Dispose of oil, grease and filters in a way that is harmless to the environment and in accordance with existing anti-pollution regulations.

Always disconnect the power supply leads before carrying out electric welding or any other work on the electrical system.

The environment is in danger if environmentally hazardous material (e.g. waste oil) is not subject to correct use and/or disposal.

Safety instructions SAFETY DECALS WITH WARNING SYMBOLS Safety decals with warning symbols are placed in all danger areas of the machine. The symbols are intended to help the operator to perceive a danger of injury and to prevent accidents.

The location of the decals on the machine and their wording is stated on the following pages.

The CLAAS spare part number is quoted before each description.

The figures in brackets refer to the location of the decals shown in the figures Safety signs that are damaged or cannot be recognized any more must immediately be replaced by new ones.

When parts are replaced that have decals, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

Technical data CALCULATION OF AXLE LOADS, MINIMUM BALLASTING AND TOTAL WEIGHT The front axle of the tractor must always to be loaded with at least 20% of the unladen weight of the tractor.

The mounting of implements on the front or rear three point linkage shall not result in exceeding the maximum permissible weight, the permissible axle loads and the tyre load carrying capacities of the tractor.

Make sure before buying an implement that these conditions are fulfilled by carrying out the following calculations or by weighing the tractor/implement combination.

1. Check the scope of delivery against the delivery note.

When working on the machine there is a danger of injury as the drive system can start moving suddenly!

– Stop tractor engine and remove ignition key.

BEFORE USING THE MACHINE MAKE THESE CHECKS AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS 1. Check the level of the semifluid lubricant in the swather gearbox.

2. Before the first use lubricate the swather abundantly.

3. Check whether the screws are tightened correctly.

4. Check all safety devices (e.g. overload clutches, covers of drive elements...) for correct function and installation.

5. Never operate the PTO at a speed higher than 540 rpm.

6. Always engage the tractor PTO with the engine running at idling speed.

7. After attachment of the swather and coupling of the PTO shaft, check by careful lifting and lowering wether the drive shaft is freely moveable.

8. Secure the guard tubes with the safety chain provided to prevent them rotating.

9. Check the tightening of the wheel bolts as per specifications. Also check the tyre inflation and if necessary correct as per specifications.

10. Evacuate persons from the hazard area; if anyone approaches to the rotary swather, switch it off immediately.

11. Never leave the rotary swather unattended as long as the tractor engine is running.

Before operation ATTACHMENT TO THE TRACTOR Before the first operation of the swather, make sure that the hitch and the PTO shaft suit the tractor.

Attachment to the bottom links The hitch brackets (1) are reversible for use on tractors with either cat. I or cat. II linkage.

Adjust the lower links to uniform height. Fit the lower links of the tractor to the hitch pins (1) of the machine and secure with linch pin. Connect the upper link to the tractor and to the machine. Secure with a linch pin.

Restrict side-to-side movement of lower links as much as possible.

Danger!

When raising and lowering the machine, there is danger of injury near the headstock and safety bracket.

– Never reach into this area when parts are capable of moving.

Before operation Universal drive shaft Connect drive shaft to the tractor PTO shaft. The overload clutch goes next to the machine.

When fitting the machine to a tractor for the first time, check if the length of the drive shaft is correct, by raising the machine to full height and lowering the machine to the lowest position.

Danger!

The universal drive shaft can get lose during operation and create a danger of injury!

– Check that all locks of the drive shaft are securely engaged before starting work.

Adapting the drive shaft length: Pull both shaft sections apart and fit them to the PTO stub ends.

Place the two sections alongside each other so as to reach the shortest length the shaft will have to accommodate and mark the sections.

10 Observe the maximum permissible shaft length (LB).

Try to reach the maximum possible overlap for the profile tubes.

During field operation, the overlap (PU) of the tubes must never be less than 50% of the overlap which is available when the tubes are fully compressed (LZ).

At the shortest operating length the tubes must not collide. A minimum clearance (a) = approx. 40 mm must still be present.

Cut the male and the female guard tubes to the correct length.

Then cut the same length from the male and female profile tubes.

File the cut area and remove any metal burrs.

Grease the sliding surface of the profile tubes.

Before operation Road transport Danger!

The steering characteristics of the tractor can considerably be affected by a mounted machine!

– At least 20% of the empty weight of the tractor must be on the front axle when the machine is attached. If necessary install balance weights.

Danger!

The machine can lower inadvertently during road travel and cause personal injury!

– When driving on public roads with the raised machine, the control lever of the hydraulics must be secured against lowering.

• The applicable laws and regulations must be observed when travelling on public roads!

• Observe the applicable regulations in your country.

• Match the speed to the traffic and road conditions.

Observe relevant national (country-specific) regulations for the maximum permissible road speed!

Reduce speed as appropriate when going around curves.

• All tine bars which extend beyond the width of the tractor, must be removed before travelling on public roads. Clip the detached tine bars on the supports (1) and (2) on the machine frame and secure. To lock the rotor secure two tine bars with safety pins using the holes (A) of support (2) (Fig. 19).

• In transport position the rotary swather extends more than 1 m beyond the tail lights of the tractor and must therefore be fitted with warning panels VAR. 6282 – see »Mounting the warning panels«, page 7.5.

Operation If the crop is projected beyond the swathing deflector (at the front or the rear side), angle bar (11) has to be moved to the front or the rear. To do this drive in screws (10) as required.

To set the swathing deflector parallel to the ground, tilt rotors forward and move the swathing deflector in the slotted holes (9).

Note!

For the adjustment of the rotor the machine should be raised slightly clear of the ground using hydraulic power.

Swath forming adjustment (only LINER 470 S / 430 S) Tine arm timing can be changed to suit crop conditions by adjusting the cam track.

Loosen hex. bolt (14) and move lever (13) to the left or right to make the adjustment. This controls the timing of the rake action in the crop.

– Stop tractor engine and remove ignition key.

• Set the rotor plate (18) horizontal in relation to the travel direction by lengthening or shortening top link (15) (Fig. 7).

• Using height adjusting crank (16) lower the rotor until the complete crop is raked neatly over the entire working width – see »Height adjustment of the rotary assembly«, page 9.2.

• After the working height adjustment check once more that the rotor plate (18) is horizontal and if necessary re-adjust using top link (15) (Fig. 7).

Note!

A slight rotor tilt to the side ensures better swathlaying and reduces damage to the grass stubble.

• During operation the tractor hydraulic system must be set to "draft control".

Danger!

Tractors with fixed lower links or hydraulic system without floating position: Lengthen or shorten the top link of the 3-point linkage until pin (19) stays in the centre of slotted hole (20) steht (Fig. 8).

• Before driving into the crop, switch on the tractor PTO shaft while the engine is idling at a low number of revolutions per minute (rpm).

• Increase the rpm to a maximum of 540.

• Choose the driving speed according to crop, land and soil conditions.

• Lift the machine when turning sharp curves.

• Avoid allowing the overload clutch to operate for more than 10 seconds.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT 3-point linkage - gauge wheel B03/010 Fitting an extra landwheel and chain instead of the upper link allows the machine to follow ground contours independently of the tractor.

10 Maintenance IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS Danger!

When working on the machine there is a danger of injury as the drive system can start moving suddenly!

– Disengage the drive mechanism and stop the engine before any maintenance, servicing or cleaning work and before the elimination of malfunctions.

– Always remove ignition key and detach the drive shaft.

Danger!

Components under tension can get loose unexpectedly and cause serious injury!

– Before the start of assembly work, all components under tension (springs, pressure accumulators etc.) must be released according to instructions.

After each wheel installation, retighten wheel nuts or bolts after the first 10 operating hours and then check for tightness every 50 operating hours. For the tightening torques see »Technical Data«.

Always observe the prescribed inflation pressure, see »Technical Data«.

Bolts Check all bolts for tightness and retighten if necessary.

Check that all split pins and roll pins are in place.

Lubrication Observe the oil change intervals and the oil quality specified by the manufacturer. For lubrication use only good quality grease or oil. Before applying the grease gun, clean the grease nipples.

Grease all points that require lubrication, observing the intervals specified in the lubrication chart.

The lubrication intervals stated apply to normal service conditions only. Lubricate more frequently if the machine is used in severe conditions.

Environment!

Dispose of used oil and grease according to regulations!

Danger!

The lifted machine or the rotors can lower inadvertently while repair, maintenance or cleaning work is carried out. Use appropriate supporting devices to secure the lifted machine against lowering!

Safety frame Refit the protection frames completely after any maintenance or repair work.

Wheels and tyres Danger!

Damaged tyres can loose air pressure unexpectedly during travel, causing the machine to roll to and fro!

– Check tyres regularly for damage and correct inflation pressure.

– Repair work on tyres must only be carried out by professionals and with correct tools.

Danger!

Avoid an excessive inflation pressure.

Danger of bursting!

– Stand clear of the tyre when inflating.

– Periodically check the inflation pressure.

The checking procedure described can only be used after approx. 20 operating hours.

Before each check run rotor for a short time (abt 1 - 2 minutes) at increased speed.

Turn rotor manually until the oil level check plug (2) is positioned as shown in figure 2.

Check the level of the semi-fluid lubricant in the rotor using a folding rule (3). Introduce the rule obliquely through the hole (4) of oil level check plug up to the “18 cm graduation mark”. The semi-fluid lubricant in the rotor gearcase should reach up to the “3 cm graduation mark”. If necessary fill semi-fluid lubricant Retinax G through the hole of plug (4).

Re-install the oil level check plug (2).

Semi-fluid lubricant part number: 177 459.0 - 0,5 kg keg 178 672.0 - 20 kg tin (Fig. 3)

PTO DRIVE SHAFT Service the PTO drive shaft in accordance with the instructions of the PTO drive shaft manufacturer (see operating manual of the PTO drive shaft manufacturer).

Comply with the safety instructions of the manufacturer.

Damaged or missing guard tubes, guard cones and securing chains have to be replaced immediately.

When not in use protect the PTO drive shaft against the influence of the weather.

After long periods of disuse lubricate the PTO drive shaft and check its function before resetting the machine into work.

Caution!

Drive systems can be damaged and suffer from increased wear!

– The PTO drive shaft must only be operated when in irreproachable state.

Spring tines Check the fastening screws (3) of the spring tines after the first 10 operating hours and tighten if necessary.

Then check every 100 operating hours and retighten as required.

WINTER STORAGE 1. Remove all crop residues and dirt from the rotary swather. Wash grease and dust from all bearings.

2. Lubricate all grease points thoroughly in accordance with the chart until grease emerges from the bearings. Operate the swather briefly.

3. Check the rotary swather for worn and defective parts and have necessary repairs carried out immediately. Clean rusty areas and repair damaged paint work.

4. Use tyre protective paint to prevent rubber from deteriorating.

5. Store the rotary swather in a dry place away from stored fertilizer.
