2 Introduction INTRODUCTION This fitting and operating instruction manual provides information on the use, adjustment and operation of the CLaaS Pickup.

The advice on care and servicing should be followed in order to obtain maximum performance and long service from the machine.

The assembly and regular inspections of your machine should be carried out by your specialist workshop.

Neglect in maintenance or service or incorrect use will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of time.

Make use of the experience and latest developments incorporated in this machine by correct operation and careful maintenance and the machine will always give you good service.

4 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE Please also note that the CLAAS Pickup is also called the machine in the following chapters.

The notes in this fitting and operating manual should be read and observed by all persons who are involved in the use, maintenance, repair or monitoring of the machine.

In order to provide a better illustration, some of the guards and covers have been removed for this purpose. all guards and covers must be replaced before the machine is started!

Pay particular care when reading the sections "Safety rules« and »Prior to operation«.

The use of spare parts, accessories, and ancillary equipment not originally manufactured by CLAAS, or which have not been checked and approved by CLAAS, can change the specified design characteristics of the CLAAS machine or can detract from its functional performance, with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive safety of the machine and its working safety (accident prevention).

CLAAS are in no way liable for any damage or personal injury caused through the use of parts, accessories, and ancillary equipment other than original CLAAS parts.

Technical specifications, dimensions, and weights cover the corresponding tolerances.

CLAAS reserves the right to make subsequent changes in the course of technical developments.

Front, rear, right, and left always refer to the direction of travel.

Preface IDENTIFICATION PLATE In the case of all spare part orders and technical queries always quote the machine number, the type and the serial number. This is required to avoid supplying the wrong spare parts.

The identification plate (1) with the machine number (Fz-Ident-No.) (2) is mounted on the right hand side wall of the machine.

5 Safety rules Before putting the machine into operation, read thre operator's manual and follow the safety precautions!

CORRECT USE The Pickup is designed exclusively for normal use in agricultural work (correct use). any other use is considered as incorrect use, and the manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any resulting damage, the risk is entirely that of the operator.

Correct use also includes strict adherence to the conditions of operation, service, and repair as specified by the manufacturer.

The Pickup may only be used, maintained and repaired by persons who are familiar with these processes and who have been advised of the dangers involved.

The relevant accident prevention regulations and other generally recognised health and safety at work and road traffic regulations are to be observed. any modifications to the Pickup undertaken solely by the operator release the manufacturer from any liability for any resulting damage.

6. Working under the lifted pickup is only permitted if it is securely supported.

7. On public roads and tracks, the Pickup must always be in the transport position.

8. Never operate the universal drive shafts without the guards fitted.

9. Repair, maintenance and cleaning work, as well as rectifying functional faullts, should only ever be undertaken with the drive switched off and with the engine at a standstill.

Remove the ignition key.

10. When working on the electrical system, always switch off the battery isolator switch.

11. Refit the guards after completion of the maintenance work.

12. When fitting the Pickup to a forage harvester there is a danger of injury.

13. No person should stand between the forage harvester and the Pickup unless the vehicle has been secured against rolling away by using the parking brake and/or chocks under the wheels!

Observe all the other safety instructions outlined in the forage harvester operating instructions.

GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION REGULATIONS 1. In addition to the instructions provided in this operating manual, please also note the general safety and accident prevention regulations.

2. always comply with local traffic regulations when driving on public roads.

3. Before starting to work, familiarise yourself with all the operating equipment and its function. It will be too late to do this once driving!

4. Before starting the Pickup check to make sure that there are no loose components which have been carried with it.

5. any work on or in the Pickup can only be undertaken with the engine at a standstill and with the ignition key removed. all the operating levers must be in the neutral position and there must be no hydraulic pressure in any of the lines.

Safety rules

Safety rules SAFETY DECALS WITH PICTORIALS Safety decals are attached to the danger zones of the machine. The safety decals help to alert persons to hazards which can cause personal injury. The pictorials provide instructions to avoid the hazard.

These safety signs, their placement on the machine and a brief explanatory text are shown on the following pages.

The CLAAS part number of every decal is stated ahead of the text.

The figure in ( ) refers to the adjacent picture and indicates the correct location of the decal on the machine.

Safety decals that are damaged or cannot be recognised any more must be replaced immediately by new ones.

When parts that have decals are replaced, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

7 Assembly UNLOADING / LOADING THE MACHINE Danger!

Improper lifting and transporting can cause accidents.

– Only suspend the machine from the slinging points (1) on the left and right (Fig. 1)!

– Ensure that the lifting gear (e.g. slings) is sufficiently dimensioned.

Release the lashings on the fitting components and remove the fitting components.

Release the lashings (6) on the Pickup and remove the lashing straps completely.

Release the cable strap (7) on the safety frame.

All work under or on the raised Pickup only to be undertaken with secure support.

– Raise the Pickup to the highest position – see page 9.1, Lifting / lowering the Pickup.

– Extend the stands to touch the ground and secure – see Extending the prop stands on page 8.11.

– Do not additionally load the stands through the hydraulic system of the forage harvester.

Danger!

Only work on the Pickup when the engine is at a standstill.

– Disengage drive shaft.

– Stop the engine.

– Remove the ignition key.

– Wear gloves.

– No person should be between the forage harvester and the Pickup.

Attention!

Before fitting the Pickup ensure that the lock mechanism is open.

Move the machine towards the front attachment so that the location pegs (3) of the feed are underneath the location holes (2) of the unit.

Raise the front attachment with the machine hydraulic system – see page 9.1, Lifting / lowering the Pickup.

Assembly Supporting the Pickup Danger! all work under the raised Pickup only to be undertaken with secure support.

The prop stands on the left and right can be used to provide safety support.

Attention!

Do not additionally load the prop stands through the hydraulic system of the forage harvester.

Raise the Pickup to the highest position. Fully extend the left prop stand (4) and secure in the nearest hole available.

Also use additional suitable props (5).

Fit the right prop stand (6) in the bottom holder (B).

Extend the prop stand (6) to its maximum length using the hand crank.

Make sure that that the Pickup is securely locked on the coupling shaft (9) (Fig. 11).

On the Pickup, push the lever (7) downwards and secure with the spring plug (8).

Assembly Adjusting the lock mechanism If the lock mechanism cannot be closed, adjust the stop (11) on the Pickup.

To adjust the lock mechanism: 10

• Release the bolts (10), • adjust the position of the stop (11) in the slotted holes,

• retighten the bolts (10).

Connecting the hydraulics

Connect the hydraulic hoses (14) for the roller crop press to the hydraulic coupler (13) on the chopper.

Connect the hydraulic hoses (15) for the additional equipment to the hydraulic coupler (16) on the chopper.

Attention!

Contamination of the hydraulic system is possible by the use of dirty hydraulic couplers or oil plug sockets.

– Clean the coupler plugs on the hydraulic hoses and the oil plug sockets before each connection operation.

Insert the hydraulic hoses (14, 15) through the holder (12) and connect to the chopper.

Note the colour coding marks on the hydraulic lines and plug sockets.

Open the lock mechanism of the land wheel bracket (18) and turn the lever (19) outwards.

Swing the land wheel bracket (18) outwards and relock.

Fitting the universal drive shaft 1. Stop the engine and remove the ignition key.

2. First push the universal drive shaft (22) onto the PTO shaft (23) of the front attachment.

3. Push the universal drive shaft (22) all the way back and place in the bracket (25).

4. Use safety chains (24) to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

Pickup front attachments can only be operated with the contour system or with cutting height preselection.

Otherwise the Pickup could get damaged.

Never remove the protective guards (1) from the universal drive shaft.

– Check that all locks are securely engaged before starting work with the drive shaft.

– Hang the fixing chains (4) for the universal drive shaft protection on the front attachment with the hook.

1. Stop the engine and remove the ignition key.

2. Remove the universal drive shaft (1) from the bracket (2).

3. Push the universal drive shaft (1) onto the PTO shaft (3) of the transmission and reverser gear.

Make sure that the universal drive shaft engages securely.

When fitting for the first time make sure that the dog clutch (5) is aligned.

If necessary, the height, side and/or angular offset can be compensated for by moving the angle drive (6) in the slotted holes.

• Release hex bolts (7) and/or (8).

• Align the angle drive (6).

• Tighten hex bolts (7) and/or (8).

Raise the roller crop press (5).

Unlock the land wheel bracket (2) by turning the lever (3) outwards and swinging the land wheel bracket (2) outwards and relocking.

Ensure that the locking pin (3) engages securely.

Lift the lock mechanism (4) and swing the land wheel backwards and engage it in this position.

Lower the roller crop press (5).

Extract the plug (7) and pull the left prop stand (6) all the way upwards.

Secure the left prop stand (6) with the plug (7).

The distance between the tines and the ground should be 20 to 30 mm. Raise the Pickup to allow adjustment.

The height adjustment of the Pickup can be undertaken on the left and the right by moving the position of the pin (11).

If the desired working height cannot be adjusted by the land wheels, check and, if necessary, correct the setting of the rear prop wheels – see Fitting kit guide wheel on page 9.8.

Set the desired working height on the prop wheel using the pin (11) and secure the pin using the linch pin (12).

Setting the Pickup lowering speed The lowering speed of the Pickup can be adjusted by moving the knurled knob (V) on the flow divider.

The shift linkage (E) must first be switched to the change-over valve for the front attachment to position (L).

With the hydraulic oil at operating temperature, set the knurled knob so that the front attachment sinks down from the uppermost position to the ground in approx.

5 to 6 seconds.

Lowering speed: Quicker = screw in the knurled knob (V) Slower = screw out the knurled knob (V) Further information – see the operating instructions for the forage harvester.

Prior to operation CHECK AND NOTE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE STARTING TO WORK. 1. Check the oil level in the gearbox.

2. Lubricate the machine thoroughly before starting to work – see Lubrication chart, on page 11.1.

3. Check the bolts for tightness.

4. Check the drive chains for correct tension.

5. Check all safety devices (e.g. overload clutches, covers of drive elements,...) for correct function and installation.

6. Use safety chains to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

7. Never let the Pickup run unattended.

8. Remove persons away from the danger area, if persons approach the danger area turn the Pickup off immediately.

Prior to operation FITTING THE PICKUP Danger!

When fitting the Pickup there is a danger of injury.

– No person should be between the forage harvester and the Pickup. all work under or on the lifted Pickup only to be undertaken with secure support.

– See Extending the prop standson page 8.11.

Work only to be carried out on the Pickup with the drive switched off and the engine at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key.

Attention!

Before fitting the Pickup make sure that the lock mechanism is open.

Proceed as follows to fit the Pickup: 1. Release the lock mechanism – see Release the lock mechanism on page 7.4.

2. Hitch the front attachment – see Hitching the Pickup on page 7.4.

3. Close the lock mechanism – see Closing the lock mechanism on page 7.5.

4. Check that the front attachment is securely locked and adjust the lock mechanism if necessary – see adjusting the lock mechanism on page 7.6.

5. Connect the hydraulic hoses – see Connecting the hydraulics on page 7.6.

6. Fit the universal drive shaft – see Connecting the universal drive shaft on page 8.2.

Prior to operation BEFORE TRANSPORT Danger!

Only ever work on the machine if the engine is at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key.

1. Hitch the machine – see Fitting the Pickup, on page 8.8.

2. Raise the machine – ground clearance 3. Raise the rotors into the transport position – see Transport position, on page 8.9 4. Transport the machine only when switched off.

During transport make sure that the control levers of the hydraulic system are not accidentally actuated.

Transport position Fold the dust net (1) downwards.

Swing the left and right land wheel (2) forwards by pushing the land wheel downwards against the rubber pad, then swing forwards and allow it to engage in this position.

Check the lock mechanism (5).

Raise the roller crop press (6).

Unlock the land wheel bracket (3) by turning the lever of the locking pin (4) outwards and swinging the land wheel bracket (3) inwards.

Relock the land wheel bracket (3).

Ensure that the locking pin (4) engages securely.

Lower the roller crop press (6) onto the rubber pad.

Road travel Danger!

During road travel with a raised machine, the hydraulic control lever must be locked against inadvertent lowering.

• Observe the relevant traffic regulations when 5

In other countries, different traffic regulations may apply.

• The ground speed is to be matched to the traffic 23

Raise the Pickup Extend the left prop stand (1) completely and secure in the closest hole with the plug (2).

Push the right prop stand (4) into the top bracket (A) on the outside and secure with the plug (3).

Turn out the right prop stand (4) by about 120 mm by using the hand crank (5).

1. Check the working position of the Pickup – see Working position on page 8.4.

6. Before entering the field of crops switch on the Pickup at idle speed.

Attention!

The Pickup front attachments may only be lowered to the mid range of the pendulum travel.

Otherwise the Pickup could get damaged.

7. Lower the Pickup down to the working height.

8. Increase to working speed and enter the field of crops.

9. The ground speed depends upon the individual conditions (ground condition, condition of the crops).

The speed of the intake auger can be adjusted by changing the sprocket (8) giving two different speeds.

Small sprocket (Z = 15, fitted as standard): for high cutting lengths 9 - 20 mm Large sprocket (Z = 24 + 3 cranked chain links from the accessories): for low cutting lengths 4 - 9 mm Changing the sprocket:

• Open the cover hood.

• Slacken the chain (9)– see page 10.4, Tightening the drive chains.

• Remove the connecting link of the chain (9).

• Remove the hex bolts (10) (6xM10) and change

The roller crop press (12) can be lifted out from the operator's platform using the hydraulic cylinder.

Before reversing the feeder mechanism, lift out the roller crop press completely.

Note: When reversing, the roller crop press is automatically lifted.

When starting to operate again, the roller crop press is not lowered automatically.

10 Maintenance IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Inspect hydraulic hoses regularly, and replace them if damaged or worn. Replacement hoses must meet the technical requirements specified by the manufacturer.

Repair work on the hydraulic system may only be carried out by authorised specialist workshops.

Danger!

Screws and bolts

Repair, maintenance and cleaning work, as well as rectifying functional faults, should only be undertaken with the drive switched off and with the forage harvester at a standstill.

Check all screws and bolts for tightness, and retighten if necessary.

– Remove the ignition key.

Observe the prescribed oil change periods and oil qualities in the gearbox. Only use high-quality branded grease and oil to lubricate the machine. Clean the grease nipples before applying the grease. Lubricate the machine according to the lubrication chart at the end of this manual.

Danger!

In the case of repair, maintenance and cleaning work on or under the raised Pickup, the work can only be undertaken with secure supporting props.

– see Sicherheitsstützeon page 4.3.

Hydraulic system

Make sure that all securing pins and clips are in place.

Lubrication

The specified lubrication intervals only apply for normal conditions of use. If the machine is operated under rough conditions, it must be lubricated more frequently.

Environment!

Dispose of oil and grease in the prescribed manner.

Danger!

When working on the hydraulic system, always make sure that it is pressure-free.

Safety guards Danger!

Fluids (hydraulic oil) escaping under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. In the event of an injury, obtain the services of a doctor immediately, since otherwise serious infection can occur.

Environment!

Dispose of oil and grease in the prescribed manner.

The safety guards may only be opened if the drive is switched off and the engine is at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key.

Refit the guard frame and any other protective devices after completing any repair or maintenance work.

Check the safety guards at regular intervals.

Worn or damaged safety guards should be replaced by new ones.

Maintenance Wheels and tyres Repair work on the tyres may only be undertaken by specialists using the specific assembly tools.

Danger!

Excessively high pressure can cause a tyre to burst.

– Keep clear of the tyre while inflating.

– The prescribed tyre pressure, – see page 6.1, Specifications, should be maintained.

Maintenance

Maintenance DRIVES Angle drive Danger!

Only work on the Pickup and / or the forage harvester with the drive switched off and with the engine at a standstill.

Remove the ignition key.

– Prop the Pickup securely – see page 7.5, Supporting the Pickup!

Note: For maintenance work on the gearbox of the Pickup we recommend that the forage harvester with fitted Pickup be driven over a suitable inspection pit.

Attention!

The inspection pit must comply with the safety regulations.

Raise the Pickup until the angle drive is horizontal.

Prop the Pickup securely.

Switch off the drive and bring the engine to a standstill.

Secure the forage harvester against rolling away.

Maintenance Use only gearbox oil SAE 90 to (MIL-L-2105) API GL-4-90 for lubricating the angle drive.

The filling quantity is 0.80 litres.

Oil change: After starting to use for the first time or after a gearbox overhaul, the first oil change should be undertaken after 40 operating hours.

After this once yearly or every 500 operating hours.

Check the oil level every 50 operating hours.

Tightening the drive chains After the first 10 operating hours, all the chains should be checked for tension.

Even when using the machine later, the chain tension must be checked.

The steel roller chain is correctly tensioned if the slack span of the chain, with a small load on the tight span, can be pushed in by thumb pressure by about 2% of the axial separation. In the case of new chains, the tension needs to be checked more regularly.

Example: axial separation 500 mm = depression movement on the slack span approx. 10 mm.

• Release the hex nuts (5).

• Open the cover.

• Release the lock nuts (7).

• Screw the hex bolt (8) in or out until the desired chain tension is produced.

• If necessary, shorten the drive chain (6).

• Retighten the lock nuts (7).

• Close the cover.

UNIVERSAL DRIVE SHAFTS The universal drive shafts (9, 10) should be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions (see operating instructions of the universal drive shaft manufacturer).

Observe the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Damaged or missing guard tubes, guard cones, or safety chains must be replaced immediately.

Protect the universal drive shafts from the effects of the weather.

After each prolonged standstill the universal drive shafts should be re-lubricated before starting to operate again, and the readiness for operation should be checked.

Attention!

Damage to and increased wear of the drives.

– Only use the universal drive shafts if their condition is technically perfect.

Maintenance HYDRAULICS Repair work on the hydraulic system may only be carried out by CLAAS authorised specialist workshops.

Hydraulic hoses Attention!

Aged hydraulic hoses can burst or start leaking.

– Inspect hydraulic hoses regularly, and replace them if damaged or worn.

Check hydraulic hoses before operating for the first time and then at least once a year.

Hydraulic hoses may not be used for longer than 6 years after date of manufacture. The date of manufacture (month and year) is marked on the hydraulic hose (Fig. 8).

Example: The information "2 Q 02“ designates manufacture in the 2nd quarter of 2002.

FASTENERS All fasteners required for safety, such as bolts, screws, pins, clips, etc. must be checked regularly for signs of wear or deformation.

Any worn or damaged fasteners must be replaced.

THREADED FASTENERS After about 10 operating hours, all the bolts and nuts on the entire machine should be checked for correct tension and if necessary retightened.

Check whether all the split pins are present.

Then check at regular intervals.

SAFETY GUARDS Danger!

The safety guards guard against rotating machine parts – Danger of injury!

Before opening the safety guards: – Stop the engine.

– Remove the ignition key.

Maintenance TYRES Tyre pressure Danger!

Damaged tyres can unexpectedly lose their pressure during operation.

– Check tyres regularly for damage and correct pressure.

– Repair work on tyres may only be carried out by professionals with suitable tools.

Excessively high pressure can cause a tyre to burst.

– Keep clear of the tyre while inflating.

– Use only compressed air to pump up the tyres.

– Maintain the maximum permissible air pressure.

Check the tyre pressures on a regular basis. For pressure – see Specifications on page 6.1.

Maintenance WINTER STORAGE 1. Clean the Pickup of straw and dirt.

2. Wipe grease and dust from the outside of all bearings.

3. Lubricate all grease points until grease emerges from the bearings (see lubrication chart). allow the Pickup to turn over for a short period.

4. Check the Pickup for wear and damage and repair if necessary.

5. Clean rusty areas and repair damaged paint work.

6. Use protective tyre paint to prevent rubber from deteriorating.

7. Store the Pickup in a dry, weather-protected room where no artificial manure is stored.
