Safety Warnings

WARNING

Personal Protection

When an engine is operating, keep the service area well ventilated or attach an exhaust removal system. Engine exhaust emits carbon monoxide, an odorless, poisonous gas, that can lead to serious injury or death.

WARNING To avoid personal injury or death, carefully read and understand all instructions before attempting to operate any equipment or tools.

Do not operate or work on a machine unless you read and understand the instructions and warnings in this and all other applicable manuals. Contact Dealer Service Tools for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. Always follow all State and Federal health and safety laws and/or local regulations.

To prevent serious injury or death, set the parking brake and block the wheels before testing or servicing a machine.

Do not drive the machine and operate the multi-tool at the same time. Distractions can cause an accident. Have one person drive the machine and another person operate the tool.

To prevent possible damage to your hearing, always wear ear protection when working around noise generating tools.

To avoid eye injury, always wear protective glasses or face shield.

Make sure no one can be injured by flying objects or debris when using tools or working on a component.

Maintain adequate clearance around moving components and/or belts during testing.

Moving components and/or belts can catch test equipment, loose clothing, or body parts, and cause damage, personal injury, or death.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fluids immediately.

Oil, fuel, or cleaning fluid leaked or spilled onto any hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire, resulting in personal injury or death.

Do not expose the multi-tool to liquids.

Liquids can enter the tool and cause damage.

Flammable liquids can cause an explosion, resulting in serious injury.

Personal injury can result from slips or falls. DO NOT leave tools or components laying around the work area and clean up all spilled fluids immediately.

To avoid multi-tool damage and/or personal injury, do not use test leads with damaged insulation or exposed wires. Do not remove test leads while a test is running. Do not touch test leads, tips, or the circuit being tested while a test is running.

Personal injuries can occur as a result of using pressurized air.

Maximum air pressure at the nozzle must be below 205 kPa (30 psi) for cleaning purposes.

Wear protective clothing, protective glasses, and a protective face shield when using pressure air.

The multi-tool is designed to use many of the same sensors used by existing tools. For this reason, the purchase of new sensors may not be required.

General Information Section Introduction The 285-0910 Multi-Tool Group provides the technician a handheld unit which has several diagnostic tools in a menu-driven display.

The diagnostic interface module (DIM) plugs into and adapts the various sensors and cables required for the different applications.

The software is currently preloaded for four different tool applications: a blowby/airflow indicator, an electronic position indicator, a signal generator and counter, and an engine timing indicator.

Additional functions will be offered as software updates become available.

NOTE:: The diagnostic interface module (DIM) included with the multi-tool should remain in use with that multi-tool. Interchanging DIM units and multi-tool units is not recommended without sending both units in for calibration.

For identification purposes, corresponding serial numbers are printed on the back of each unit.

Each individual tool program is activated by inserting the appropriate software license card. Once activated, that specific function remains permanently accessible from the 285-0910 Multi-Tool Group menu.

The universal power supply, internal battery, and DC cable for vehicle battery power provide three options for supplying power.

Four AC power cords are included for worldwide use.

The 285-0910 Multi-Tool Group replaces four existing tools: 8T-1000 Position Indicator Group 8T-2700 Blowby/Air Flow Indicator Group 8T-5200 Signal Generator/Counter Group 8T-5300 Engine Timing Indicator Group

4. Fully charge (allow three hours) the internal NiMH battery using AC Power Adapter and Supply (1 and 2) or a DC Power Cable (3).

Plug the AC or DC power supply cable into the External Power Port.

Operation Section Hardware Power Supply Before using the tool for the first time, connect the internal battery pack.

1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws securing battery compartment cover (1) on the bottom of the multi-tool.

(1) Battery Compartment Cover.

2. Remove battery pack (1) and connect internal battery harness (2).

(1) AC Power Adapter. (2) AC Power Cables.

(3) DC Power Cable.

NOTE: AC power cords are provided for different regions of the world. If the correct power cable is unavailable in this group, use an AC to DC wall power adapter that is approved for your region. The DC power should only be applied through the 285-0904 DC Power Cable. This cable protects the tool from harmful voltages and voltage spikes.

(1) NiMH 9.6 Volt Battery Pack. (2) Harness.

NOTICE Do not use any other type of power adapters with the 285-0910 Multi-Tool Group. Using other power adapters can damage the tool.

3. Reinstall the battery pack and replace the cover.

2. Position the tool to access the back and open protective DIM port door (1).

Diagnostic Interface Module Use the following procedure to install the 285-0907 Diagnostic Interface Module (DIM).

NOTICE Turn OFF the tool before installing or removing the 285-0907 Diagnostic Interface Module (DIM). The tool and/or the DIM can be damaged if power is ON during installation or removal.

NOTE:: The diagnostic interface module (DIM) included with the multi-tool should remain in use with that multi-tool. Interchanging DIM units and multi-tool units is not recommended without sending both units in for calibration.

For identification purposes, corresponding serial numbers are printed on the back of each unit.

(1) Diagnostic Interface Module (DIM) Port Door.

3. Slide locking bars (1) out on the DIM. (If necessary, carefully use a tool to slide the locking bars). It may be necessary to hold the locking bars in the extended position.

1. If necessary, press POWER button (1) to shut OFF the power [power indicator light (2) OFF].

6. Push both locking bars in to secure (lock) the DIM in place.

4. Position the hardware module with the DIM connector aligned with the port. Make sure the locking bars are fully extended (not shown).

5. Insert the DIM into the recessed compartment on the back of the tool and press it into place.

NOTE: The DIM installs easily. If the DIM is not easily pressed into place, verify the locking bars are extended as far as possible, and the DIM connector is properly aligned.

2. After a short delay, the Application Manager screen is displayed.

Display The System Setup functions allow the technician to view information and adjust the default settings for the tool.

Title Bar (1) Displays the current application name.

Battery Meter (2) Displays the current state of charge of the internal battery.

1. Press POWER button ON/OFF (1) to turn the tool ON. The CATERPILLAR Multi-Tool screen is displayed.

Power Source (3) The icon indicates the tool is currently powered by an external source.

Menu Screen (4) Displays the current menu choices available.

3. Use UP/DOWN arrow keys (1) to select System Setup (2).

5. Use UP/DOWN arrow keys (1) to select an item to adjust (described below) and then press left or right ENTER key (3). a. Contrast Adjust: Adjust the contrast of the LCD screen using the LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys. b. Unit Defaults: Adjust the following using the UP/DOWN arrow keys.

2. Insert appropriate software license card (1) into software license card port (2) on the top panel.

Software/Tool Applications Introduction

a. Position software license card memory chip (3) so it can be viewed from the front of the tool.

Before use, unlock the individual applications using the applicable software license card.

Once an application is unlocked, the software license card is programmed to work only with the specific multi-tool for which it was first used. For this reason, the serial number must be recorded on the software license card for future reference. After use, the software license cards must be stored in a safe and secure place.

b. Align directional arrow (4) with the software license card port.

Unlock the Software NOTICE Turn OFF the tool before inserting or removing a software license card. The tool and/or software license card can be damaged if the tool is on during installation or removal.

c. Slide software license card (1) smoothly into the software license card port (2).

1. Press the POWER button to turn the tool OFF. Wait for the unit to power down (power indicator light and LCD screen dark).

If tool is not powering down within 10 seconds Hold ENTER button down And press power off key.”

NOTE: Make sure the software license card is fully inserted into the software license card port.

3. Press the POWER button to turn the tool ON (power indicator light illuminated).

9. Press the POWER button to turn the tool OFF. Wait for the unit to power down (power indicator light and LCD screen dark).

4. From the Application Manager screen, shown below, use the UP/DOWN and ENTER Keys to select the tool application being unlocked.

“Powering down...

10. Remove the software license card by gripping it between the thumb and forefinger and smoothly pulling it out of the port.

11. Use the POWER button to turn the tool ON. The tool application should be unlocked and ready to use.

NOTE: Locked applications appear in the display as gray text.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the unlocking procedure.

6. Wait for the application Main screen to appear.

7. Press the EXIT key.

8. Wait for the Application Manager screen to appear.

12. Record the serial number in the designated area on the back of each software license card, using permanent ink.

13. Store all software license cards, that have been used in a particular tool, together in a safe, secure location.

NOTE: Once a software license card has been used to unlock a tool application, it will not work in any other multi-tool. Additionally, that tool will only accept the specific software license card first used to unlock the specific tool application.

NOTE: It is important to properly label and store each software license card used for each individual multi-tool. The serial number can be found in two locations: On the label located on the back of the tool itself, and in the software. From the Application Manager screen, select System Setup - Hardware Tests - Serial Number.

The 285-0900 and 285-0901 Blowby/Air Flow Indicator Groups can be used with the multi-tool to measure blowby (the amount of exhaust gas escaping to the crankcase) to determine the condition of the cylinder. The indicator groups can also be used to measure air flow when checking the condition of the radiator core. This helps locate areas in the radiator core that have become blocked or restricted. The air flow rate is displayed in meters/minute or feet/minute.

The blowby/air flow indicator function provides a digital readout air flow gauge capable of displaying either volume or air flow rate in Metric or SAE units.

The 285-0900 Blowby Tool Group is used on engines smaller than 3500 Series Engines and also smaller 300 Series Engines.

Blowby Groups Both large and small blowby tool groups are available.

Use 285-0903 Cable when connecting the small blowby probe to the tool. This cable has a spring clip that must be grounded to the machine chassis/engine.

The 285-0901 Blowby Tool Group is used on 3500 Series and 3600 Series Engines, including ACERTTM models, as well as larger 300 Series Engines.

NOTE: The spring clip must make a good metal-to-metal connection for the probe to work properly. The probe will not allow the tool to “zero” without a good connection.

The 6V-9060 Gas Engine Timing Group transmitter connects to the number one primary coil winding on the spark-ignited engine. The DIN plug connects to any of the four channels on the diagnostic interface module (DIM).

(1) Engine Timing Indicator.

Connection and Setup The 285-0910 Multi-Tool Group uses three separate engine timing indicator hardware groups. There are no restrictions on engine speed or load, so timing can be checked during the actual operation of an engine.

WARNING Do not expose the multi-tool to liquids.

Liquids can enter the tool and cause damage.

Flammable liquids can cause an explosion, resulting in serious injury.

The 8T-5301 Diesel Engine Timing Group consists of a pressure transducer and fittings to connect to the engine fuel injection pump.

The pressure transducer has a five pin DIN plug that connects to any of the four channels on the diagnostic interface module (DIM).

Fuel System Connection: A fuel injection transducer “tee” must be installed in the injection line, AT THE FUEL PUMP. The injection line will be moved only about 8 mm (0.3 in), which will keep movement of fuel lines to a minimum.

NOTE: Do not use the 6V-4950 Fuel Line Speed Pickup with the multi-tool. It is not designed for this application.

Static Timing Most current production Caterpillar diesel engines are equipped with a static timing pin hole in the flywheel housing, and a corresponding hole in the flywheel. When the two holes are in alignment, the piston for the number 1 cylinder is at the top center (TC) position. A bolt can then be inserted through the hole in the flywheel housing and threaded into the hole in the flywheel to lock the engine at the top center (TC) position for static timing.

NOTE: With the engine running, log individual data points (2) by pressing the ENTER key.

With the engine running, the Engine Timing Indicator screen will display MAG: OK (1) if the transducer is the proper distance from the flywheel. The magnetic transducer should be adjusted so MAG: OK is displayed at low and high engine rpm.

Dynamic Timing For dynamic timing, an adapter and a TC magnetic transducer are installed in the flywheel housing timing pin hole. When the transducer is connected to the multi-tool diagnostic interface module (DIM), it sets up a constant magnetic field around the end of the transducer and the flywheel.

As the flywheel turns (engine is operating), the timing hole in the flywheel passes the end of the transducer, and a change in the magnetic field causes the transducer to send the top center (TC) signal to the multi-tool DIM.

NOTE: To prevent inaccurate signals, it is important that the flywheel be free of any other holes or large nicks between the time of fuel injection (or spark plug firing) and top center (TC).

Timing Indicator Function Keys

The multi-tool receives the fuel injection or spark signal first, then measures the time it takes to receive the top center (TC) signal.

The timing indicator then converts these two signals, and the time between them into engine rpm, and engine timing in degrees before top center (BTC).

After the tool receives the fuel injection or spark signal, the first signal that the magnetic transducer sends will be considered the number 1 cylinder top center (TC) signal.

For correct operation, the tool must receive the top center (TC) signal within 60° of flywheel rotation after it receives the fuel injection signal, or the spark signal. (1) Electronic Position Indicator.

The electronic position indicator function provides a digital readout, precision measuring gauge capable of displaying either inch or millimeter displacement. It replaces mechanical dial indicators and allows readings to be taken in applications such as rapidly changing dynamic readings, where mechanical dial indicators would fail. Static measurements can also be taken.

Hold/Resume (F1) Press to hold a reading value. Press again to display dynamic (changing) readings.

Clear (F2) Press to reset the position indicator function memory readouts.

Channel (F3) Press to display the menu of four color-coded input channels on the diagnostic interface module (DIM).

A “floating zero” feature is provided to allow the display to be set to zero anywhere in the measurement range of the probe.

A special electronic filter stabilizes dynamic readings. The dynamic reading feature allows the fuel injection pump rack position to be monitored on an operating engine so the fuel setting can be monitored while the engine is under load.

Zero (1 ) Resets the display to zero at any probe position. The display shows the distance the probe shaft moves from this zero position, also indicating which direction it has moved as either plus or minus on the readout.

Slow Rate/Normal Rate (2) Selects the sample rate taken during measurement. NORM (normal) indicates the display is being updated at the normal rate of three times per second. SLOW indicates the display is being updated at the rate of once per second.

Position Indicator Probe The 8T-1002 Position Indicator Probe is the standard sensor for the position indicator function. It mounts in the same manner as a mechanical dial indicator and can use most of the same mounting fixtures.

NOTICE The 8T-1002 Position Indicator Probe is not sealed and should not be submerged in any liquid or in the direct spray of any liquid. If fluid gets inside the case of the probe, it can affect the accuracy or operation of the probe.

Measuring Min (minimum), Max (maximum), and Diff (difference): These three values are defined as follows: Min - The distance the probe shaft has moved from zero in the minus (-) direction.

Diff - The total distance the probe shaft has moved from the MIN (minimum) value to the MAX (maximum) value.

8T-1002 Position Indicator Probe (1) has a standard 9.52 mm (.375 in) diameter mounting stem. The probe should always be mounted using this stem.

Measuring Values Once the 8T-1002 Position Indicator Probe is positioned, and the initial settings have been made using the position indicator function keys, position readings can be read on the display. The display will show the exact distance the probe shaft has moved from the electrical zero point.

Install correct length contact point (2) in position indicator probe shaft (3). The end of the shaft has AGD 4-48 internal threads which will accept most standard dial indicator tips, such as those in 6V-6042 Probe Contact Point Group. The contact point should only be installed finger tight.

If Normal Rate is displayed, then a new reading will be taken three times a second. If Slow Rate is displayed, a reading will be taken once every second. The slow rate helps to stabilize the display when taking dynamic readings that are changing rapidly.

NOTICE Since shaft (3) can rotate, it may be necessary to keep it from turning when removing a tip. If this is done, protect the shaft with a cloth, and exercise extreme care so the shaft is not scratched.

Measuring Deviation 1. To record deviation, set the probe to display 0.000 at the zero reference point of the part or position to be measured.

2. Move the probe to the desired position to be measured on the part.

NOTICE

3. With the display showing the actual value of the point being measured, press the CLEAR (F2) button to reset the display.

Keep the shaft of the probe clean. Wipe it with a clean, soft cloth and put a small amount of thin lubricating oil on it. Dirt on the shaft can enter the shaft bearing and keep the shaft from operating freely.

4. The Min and Max readings then display the same reading as the actual reading measured in Step 2, and the Diff reading displays 0.000.

5. When the probe moves, the Min and Max memories will display the lowest and highest values of probe travel. The Diff memory will show the total distance the probe travels (deviation).

NOTICE The probe shaft must not be forced past the normal 24.5 mm (1.00 in) range of travel.

Damage to the probe can result from exceeding probe travel limits.

THIS WARRANTY IS EXPRESSLY LIMITED TO ORIGINAL RETAIL BUYERS OF THE MANUFACTURER’S ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS (“UNITS”).

The Manufacturer’s Units are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for three years (36 months) from date of delivery. Cables are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for 90 days (3 months) from date of delivery. This warranty does not cover any Unit that has been abused, altered, used for a purpose other than that for which it was intended, or used in a manner inconsistent with instructions regarding use.

The sole and exclusive remedy for any Unit found to be defective is repair or replacement, at the option of the Manufacturer. In no event shall the Manufacturer be liable for any direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential damages (including lost profit) whether based on warranty, contract, tort or any other legal theory. The existence of a defect shall be determined by the Manufacturer in accordance with procedures established by the Manufacturer. No one is authorized to make any statement or representation altering the terms of this warranty.

Users have no right in or title to Unit software other than a limited right of use revocable by the Manufacturer. Unit software may not be transferred or disclosed without the written consent of the Manufacturer. Unit software may not be copied except in ordinary backup procedures.
