The Data Acquisition System (DAS) is a fully integrated option on 1U-9400 Hydraulic Test Centers. This interactive system produces a computerized report, which captures the test results seen by the technician during a component test.

Do not operate or work on a machine unless you read and understand the instructions and warnings in this and all other applicable manuals. Contact Dealer Service Tools for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. Always follow all State and Federal health and safety laws and/or local regulations.

The data acquisition system validates the hydraulic component rebuild process by the creation of a test report. The test report can be delivered to the customer and can also be retained in an on-site file history. When in use, the DAS monitors all of the test centers’ critical diagnostic data. Operating independently from the test center, it has no control functions.

The user interface is designed on a windows software platform.

To prevent possible damage to your hearing, always wear ear protection when using this tool and/or working around noise generating tools.

To avoid eye injury, always wear protective glasses. Make sure no one can be injured by flying objects or debris when using tools or working on a component.

2. With the “Main Menu” window open, press the “F11” key on the keyboard to access the “Station Configuration” menu.

5. “Print Options” (2).

3. If prompted, use the keyboard to enter the correct password.

a.. “Printer Connected?” Select this option if a printer is connected. Leaving this box blank disables the remaining choices (b through e).

NOTE: Whenever the “Enter Password” window opens, type the password “cat” and select the “OK” icon. All passwords used in the Data Acquisition System (DAS) are “cat”.

b.. “Auto-Prompt for Print?” Select this option to be prompted before any report is printed during or at the end of normal operation.

6. “Package Printing Default” (3). c.. “Snapshots.” Select to include current screen snapshots in the default printing package. d.. “P-Q Graphs.” Select to include P-Q Graphs in the default printing package. e.. “T-P Graphs.” Select to include T-P Graphs in the default printing package.

The “DAQ Configuration” screen has setup and calibration functions for making screen modifications and hardware calibrations.

NOTE: “Package Printing Default” refers to the report automatically printed when a test is complete and “Exit” <esc> is selected from the test panel screen. Specific screens and graphs can also be selected and printed as an option during normal testing.

4. “Measurement Options” (1). Use the drop-down “Units” window to select Metric or English.

3. If prompted, use the keyboard to enter the correct password.

“F12” Calibration Function 1. Select the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System (2)” shortcut icon to open the “Navigation Menu” screen.

4a. Enter the password and select “OK” to launch the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen. This screen displays all active channels and basic information for each channel.

4b. Select “Cancel” to close the “Enter Password” box and return to the “Navigation Menu” window without entering a password.

2. With the “Navigation Menu” window open, press the “F12” key on the keyboard to access the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen.

NOTE: Whenever the “Enter Password” window opens, type the password “cat” and select the “OK” icon. All passwords used in DAS are “cat”.

“Sample” (4) or “Calibrate” (5) configuration functions are available from the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen.

Sample (4) 1. Select “Sample” (4) to display Voltage (Raw Value) (6) and Scaled Value (calculated value) (7) for each channel.

2. In the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen select (highlight) a specific channel and double-click to open the “Signal Configuration” window for that channel.

a. “Channel:” — Indicates the channel selected (highlighted) in the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen. b.. “Name:” — Indicates the sensor name assigned to the specific channel. c.. “Label:” — Indicates the label assigned to that channel on the “Test Panel” screen. If desired, enter a more recognizable name, such as “Clutch 1”, as shown in this example. d.. “Units:” — Indicates unit of measurement selected, either kPa or psi. e.. “Slope (m):” — Indicates the rise of the slope of the linear line. f.. “Offset (b):” — Indicates the point where the linear line would cross the x or y axis on the graph.

3. The “Signal Configuration” window displays information and calibration values for the channel selected (Channel 5 in this example). Use the keyboard to manually change information and calibration values.

g.. “User Limits?” — Select to manually enter upper and lower value limits. h.. “Max Limit:” — Indicates upper limit (hardware restriction) for the units selected. j.. “Min Limit:” — Indicates lower limit (hardware restriction) for the units selected. k.. “Precision:” — Indicates the quality of calibration signatures. The smaller this number the more accurate the readings. l.. “OK” — When finished manually entering data, select “OK” to close the “Signal Configuration” window. m.. “Cancel” — Select “Cancel” to close the “Signal Configuration” window without making any changes to the values.

Calibrate (5) 1. In the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen, select (highlight) a specific channel and then select “Calibrate” (5) to open a “DAQ Signal Calibration” screen.

2. Use the “DAQ Signal Calibration” screen to plot a multi-point calibration graph. a. Select “Add” (8) to open the “Numeric Entry” window.

b.. With the “Numeric Entry” window open, enter a number value (psi in this example) which relates to “Y” (the input voltage seen by the DAS), on the selected channel. Select “OK” to enter the value.

e. After selecting “Accept”, a new “Accept current calibration?” window will display with the option to save the calibration for that channel. Select “Yes” and the calibration for the selected channel is complete, or select “Not Yet” to continue inputting additional data points for the selected channel.

c.. Repeat this “ADD” process at least twice more (1500 and 2500 psi in this example). f. If “Yes” was selected in the “Accept current calibration?” window, the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen will display.

Select another channel or if calibration is complete, select “Exit” to close the current screen and return to the “Navigation Menu”.

NOTE: Three is the minimum number of inputs required. Additional “ADD” inputs will result in a more accurate plot. d.. When all “Y” (engineering value) inputs have been entered, select “Accept” on the “DAQ Signal Configuration” screen.

The program will calibrate the device and display a linear graph of the relationship between the selected unit of measurement and the input voltage.

NOTE: Select “Cancel” to close the “DAQ Signal Calibration” screen without inputting any calibration data.

c. “View Data” — Access and view saved test data.

System Operation Navigation Menu

d. “Start Script”(Optional) — If the “Start Script” feature is desired, software is available which allows additional test procedure software to be integrated into the existing system. For more information, contact Dealer Service Tools.

1. Select the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System (2)” shortcut icon to open the “Navigation Menu” screen.

e. “Exit” — Close the “Navigation Menu” screen.

Start a New Test Panel 1. Select “Start a New Test Panel” to create a new test layout panel.

2. The “Navigation Menu” has five menu selections, described below.

a. “Start a New Test Panel” — Create a new test layout panel. b. “Open an Existing Test Panel” — Use a previously saved test layout panel.

2. The “Layout Selection” screen will display.

This screen looks like the gauge panel on the hydraulic test center. Gauges are called out with generic labels (1).

3. To select specific diagnostic device(s) to display during a test, highlight and select the gray area near the device.

5. When all diagnostic devices have been selected and labeled, select the “Create Panel” icon to launch the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen. Select the “Cancel <esc>” icon or press Esc on the keyboard to clear the “Layout Selection” screen without saving diagnostic devices.

4. Once selected, the device is shown in color. Use the keyboard to re-label devices to a more recognizable name such as “Clutch 1” and “Clutch 2” (1).

NOTE: When the DAS is in use, all devices show a pictorial and digital value for the test and will update constantly. The digital dialog boxes also change background color from green to yellow to red if readings move out of their acceptable range.

Default Gauge Display The “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” test layout panel will always display gauges showing: RPM (1) — Displays DAS speed in RPM (revolutions per minute).

Torque (2) — Displays DAS torque in N·m (Newton Meters) or in-lb (pound force inch).

Power (3) — Displays DAS output power in kW (Kilowatts) or hp (horsepower).

Temperature (4) — Displays DAS fluid temperature in °C (degrees Celsius) or °F (degrees fahrenheit).

Panel Device Displays (5) — Displays DAS diagnostic devices selected by the user (Flow Loop 2 and Flow Loop 3 in this example).

Icon Button Functions Icon buttons located along the bottom of the test layout panel allow access to additional test functions. Functions that are not available for use will be faded out.

P-Q <F2> (6) — When testing a hydraulic pump, create a P-Q graph to show the relationship between a pump’s flow and load pressure. This curve is used to represent a POR valve setting, a stroking signal, etc.

Selecting P-Q icon button (6) or pressing “F2” on the keyboard opens interactive P-Q graphs during pump testing.

T-P <F3> (7) — When testing transmissions, perform shift traces. Shift traces are graphical representations of how individual clutches react during a shift. They show the relationship between clutch pressure and time.

Selecting “T-P” icon button (7) or pressing “F3” on the keyboard opens interactive shift trace graphs (TP Plot).

Open an Existing Test Panel 1. Select the “Open an Existing Test Panel” icon on the “Navigation Menu” screen to display a list of previously saved layout panels.

Spd <F4> (8) — During transmission tests, speed sensors can be checked for functionality. The DAS can test up to five speed sensors. Selecting “Spd” icon button (8) or pressing “F4” on the keyboard enables the setup of speed sensor samples.

Save Panel <F5> (9) — Test panel layouts can be saved for future use. Selecting “Save Panel” icon button (9) or pressing “F5” on the keyboard allows creating a name for the current test layout panel.

Print Data <F9> (10) — During a test, panel layout snapshots can be printed. Selecting “Print Data” icon button (10) or pressing “F9” on the keyboard prints a snapshot of current test panel data in table form.

Save Data <F12> (11) — During a test, panel layout snapshots can be saved for future reference or printout. Selecting “Save Data” icon button (11) or pressing “F12” on the keyboard saves the current data displayed.

Exit <esc> (12) — To close the current test layout panel and return to the “Navigation Menu”screen, select “Exit” icon (12) or press the “Esc” button on the keyboard.

NOTE: For more information on using icon button functions, refer to Starting A Test section in this manual.

2. A “User Selection” window opens and displays all saved layouts.

View Data 1. Select the “View Data” icon on the “Navigation Menu” screen to access previous test reports to view or print test data.

Select (1) — Use the curser to select (highlight) the desired layout and icons at the bottom of the window will become “active”.

Click on “Select (1)”icon (1) to open and display the selected test panel layout screen.

Delete (2) — Use the curser to select (highlight) the desired layout and icons at the bottom of the window will become “active”.

Click on “Delete.”icon (2) to remove the the selected test panel layout screen from the list and DAS memory.

Cancel (3) — Click on “Cancel”icon (3) to close the “User Selection” window without selecting or deleting a layout test screen.

The “DataSet Selection” menu will open and display a complete listing of all test files. Test files are listed by Part Number (1), Job Number (2) and Date (3).

2. To review the test data, highlight desired test file (4) (June 29, 2004 (Tue.) in this example) and click on “Select” icon (5).

Select “Cancel <esc>” icon or press “Esc” on the keyboard to close the “DataSet Selection” menu without opening a test file.

NOTE: The operator enters part number and job number information when saving data during the test. For more information on saving data, refer to Save Data at a Set Point (Save Data <F12>) section in this manual.

3. The “Data Review” screen will display the selected report, shown in table format.

NOTE: From the graph screen, select “Exit <esc>” icon in the lower right-hand corner or press “Esc” on the keyboard to return to the “Data Review” screen.

a.. View Snapshot — To view a snapshot comment (data saved at a set point during the test), use the curser to select (highlight) the desired sample tab (1). The comment for that snapshot will appear in data comment box (2).

d.. View Test Panel <F5> (4) — To view the test panel used during the test shown in the “Data Review” screen, select “View Test Panel <F5>” icon (4) or press “F5” on the keyboard.

b.. Open Graph <F11> (6) — To view a graph contained in the test report, highlight the desired graph title in “Graph Files” box (3) and select “Open Graph <F11>” icon (6) or press “F11” on the keyboard. The selected graph will display.

e.. Open Data Set <F12> (8) — To view a data set for a specific device, use the curser to highlight the device heading (7) and select “Open Data Set <F12>” icon (8) or press “F12” on the keyboard.

c.. Print <F9> (5) — Complete test reports, including graphs, can be printed.

Graphs can also be printed individually.

Select “Print <F9>” icon (5) or press “F9” on the keyboard to print the selected test report or graph.

f.. Exit <esc> — To close the “Data Review” screen and return to the “Navigation Menu”, select “Exit <esc>” icon or press “Esc” on the keyboard.

4. To close the navigation menu screen, and return to the main menu, select the “EXIT” icon on the “Navigation Menu”.

Starting a Test Once all the diagnostic devices on a layout panel have been selected, DAS is able to capture test data from the component being tested.

NOTE: This “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen is an example of a panel using all of the test center’s available diagnostic circuits.

P-Q Graphs (P-Q <F2>) 1. From the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen select “P-Q <F2>” icon or press “F2” on the keyboard to create a P-Q graph.

2. A “Pressure-Flow Graph” screen is displayed. Once the “Pressure-Flow Graph” screen is active, select “Start <space>” icon (a) or press the space bar on the keyboard to begin graphing. The DAS will continue to plot points until the icon or space bar is selected again.

NOTE: Data points on the plot will be based on the T-P gauge(s) selected on the test panel, “Clutch 3 (a) in this example.

3. Measure the difference of selected points on the graph by clicking and dragging red and green cursors (b) from “Cursors” box (d) to the desired points on the graph.

T-P Graphs (T-P <F3>) 1. From the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen select “T-P <F3>” icon or press “F3” on the keyboard to create a TP plot.

4. Select a plot from drop down menu (c) in “Cursors” box (d) to analyze different sets of data for the selected device.

5. Change graph scaling by clicking on the vertical or horizontal scale range line (e) to open a window and then enter a new number value.

6. Select “Save <F4>” icon (f) or press “F4” on the keyboard to save the graph for future use. Graphs are saved in the same file folder as the snapshots, under the heading “P-Q”.

7. Select “Print <F9>” icon (g) or press “F9” on the keyboard to print the current graph.

8. Select “Reset <F12>” or press “F12” on the keyboard to clear the “TP Plot” screen in order to graph new data.

9. When finished with the graph function, select “Exit <esc>” icon or press “Esc” key on the keyboard to return to the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen.

2. A “Clutch Shift Trace” (T-P Plot) screen will be displayed. Once the T-P plot screen is active, select “Start <space>” icon (a) or press the space bar on the keyboard to begin plotting data. The DAS will continue to plot data until the icon or space bar is selected again.

NOTE: Graphs are saved in the same file folder as snapshots, under the heading “T-P”.

3. Measure the difference of selected points on the graph by clicking and dragging red and green cursors (b) from “Cursors” box (d) to the desired points on the graph.

7. Select “Print <F9>” icon (g) or press “F9” on the keyboard to print the current graph.

NOTE: The screen shown in this example represents several “TP Plot” curves that have not been analyzed or rescaled.

8. Select “Reset <F12>” icon (h) or press “F12” on the keyboard to clear the TP Plot screen in order to graph new data.

4. Select a plot from drop down menu (c) in “Cursors” box (d) to analyze different sets of data for the selected device.

5. Change graph scaling by clicking on the vertical or horizontal scale range line (e) to open a window and then enter a new number value.

6. Select “Save <F4>” icon (f) or press “F4” on the keyboard to save the graph for future use.

9. Select “Exit <esc>” icon or press the “Esc” key on the keyboard to return to the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen.

Speed Sensor Test (Spd <F4>) Speed sensors are connected by speed sensor cables to the connection panel located below the interface panel.

3. To select another sensor, or update the current display, select “Sample” icon (a) for the desired sensor location.

1. From the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen select “Spd <F4>” icon or press “F4” on the keyboard to access the “MPU UI.vi” speed sensor test screen.

NOTE: This test can not be printed or saved.

It is simply a tool to verify sensors are working properly.

2. The “MPU UI.vi” speed sensor test window will open. Select “Sample” icon (a) for the sensor to be tested. The current Voltage (b) and frequency (c) values will display.

Save Test Panel (Save Panel <F5>)

Print Test Panel Snapshot (Print Data <F9>)

1. To save a configured test layout panel for future use from the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen, select “Save Panel <F5>” icon or press “F5” on the keyboard.

1. To print a snapshot from the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen, select “Print Data <F9>” icon or press “F9” on the keyboard.

2. Follow the on-screen prompts to print the data from the test screen snapshot in table form.

2. In the “Comment Entry” window, create a name for the new test layout panel. Select “OK” to save the layout, or select “Cancel” to close the window without saving the test layout panel.

Save Data at a Set Point (Save Data <F12>) 1. During a test, from the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen, select “Save Data <F12>” icon or press “F12” on the keyboard to save data at a set point (save a snapshot).

3. After test information has been entered select the “Accept” icon to save the data and close the window. Select “Cancel” to close the window without saving the test data.

NOTE: The first time data is saved during a test, the “Test Configuration” window will display. The screen prompts the operator to enter component information in addition to the operator’s name. Enter as much information as possible so a logical file path for the test data will be created. The part number becomes the name of a file folder and the job number becomes a sub-directory within that folder, etc. Entering complete information now, means locating test data in the future will be easier.

4. Once the “Test Configuration” fields are filled in and accepted, the “Comment Entry” window will display to allow the operator to enter a snapshot specific comment. Enter comment(s) and select the “OK” icon to return to the layout panel screen. Select “Cancel” to close the comment entry window without saving comment(s).

2. Enter test data information. a. “Part Number:” Enter the part number for the component being tested. b. “Job Number:” Enter the job number for the component being tested. c. “Operator Name:” Enter the name of the operator preforming the tests. d. “Test Comments:” Enter any important information concerning the test conditions and/or results.

NOTE: Each time a snapshot is taken during a test, the operator will be prompted to enter a comment for that snapshot. Take as many snapshots as desired during a test.

3. The “DataSet Selection” screen will appear with a prompt to print the test report.

Check the desired print functions (a) and select “Print” icon (b). If a test report printout is not needed, select “Don’t Print” icon (c).

Completing a Test (Exit <esc>) 1. When all component testing is complete, return to the “Caterpillar Hydraulic Part Test System” screen.

2. Select “Exit <esc>” icon or press “Esc” on the keyboard.

4. The Navigation Menu screen will appear next. Select the “EXIT” icon to close the program.

Test History Database Test reports are saved on the DAS hard-drive and can be exported to a PC. 1. Export data by inserting a removable memory device into one of the two USB ports on the DAS interface panel.

2. Follow on-screen instructions to save files to the memory device.

NOTE: All saved test files, including graphs and plots are logged as “.asc” files. The PC saves these files as text files, which can be opened in Excel, or other similar programs.

This allows the creation of test histories for trend analysis.
