INTRODUCTION Every J. H. Fletcher & Co. (JHF) roof drill is custom engineered and manufactured to meet customer specifications and requirements. As a result, many different models, design variations and options are now in use. Therefore, one manual alone cannot describe all possible combinations in detail. The information in this manual provides basic knowledge necessary for the safe and proper operation of the roof drill. This information is not intended to replace any federal government regulations (MSHA 30 PART 75), state regulations, or company rules. Operators and maintenance personnel must read the entire manual to understand all operational and safety procedures applicable to the equipment and working environment before operating this machinery.

Comprehension of the information set forth in with this operator’s manual, MSHA regulations, mine hazards and the specific operations of your roof bolter is a necessity before actual installation of roof bolts. (For your understanding of terminology used, JHF has provided a Glossary of Terms at the end of this manual.) The operation and maintenance of your roof drill must be done with caution, while following all safety procedures and applicable state, and federal regulations. Common sense is essential to a safe work environment.

A machine owner should never make a modification to any J.H. Fletcher & Co. equipment.

However, if you as an owner or operator believe that a design can be improved, you are directed to submit all proposed design changes to J.H. Fletcher & Co. for review and response. There will be no charge to you for this review by a qualified design engineer.

Warning labels identify hazards, and prescribe operator conduct for the safe use and operation of your roof bolter. Warning labels are considered safety equipment and must be maintained as would any other safety device. Warning labels must be kept visible and legible so that they can be read by the operator or bystanders as specified in the decal section of this manual. DO NOT remove, disable or disregard any safety device attached to your roof drill.

The owner is responsible for informing all operators, maintenance personnel and others involved in the operation of this equipment regarding the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment as described in this manual. Every operator who observes or encounters an unsafe or hazardous working condition associated with the operation of this machine shall immediately report it to mine management.

If the need for additional machine orientation or maintenance training arises, J. H. Fletcher & Co. will provide a field representative for this purpose without charge to the customer.

1.2) ROOF BOLTER OPERATOR’S MANUAL This manual is divided into specific sections in order to keep similar subject matter under one heading. There will, however, be instances when a particular subject (warnings, instructional information, etc.) may be presented in more than one section of the manual. This repetition is intentional and necessary to provide comprehensive and easily accessible information.

This manual will also be subject to periodic revisions and additions. As new or revised information is released, new pages will be provided to each registered machine owner. Please note that the upper right-hand corner of each page is identified by a revision number and year of publication. Any new pages released should be inserted into your manual in place of “old pages”.

It is important that this Operator's Manual accompany the machine if it is sold, transferred or otherwise relocated from the original installation site. J.H. Fletcher & Co. requests that you notify the company whenever a sale or transfer is made so that revisions of this manual can be provided to the new owner. 1.3) EMPLOYER/EMPLOYEE CONDUCT STATEMENT EMPLOYER: The employer before putting this machine into service, should thoroughly read all manuals associated with this equipment. Once this has been done, the mine operator/owner can develop a comprehensive training program that encompasses MSHA, mine specific hazard, and the manufacturer's machine information. As outlined in MSHA 30 CFR 46.7, the mine owner is responsible for providing Task Training to new operators or to those employees that have taken the job as roof bolter operator.

never make unauthorized machine modifications; never repair or use replacement parts which do not meet original manufacturer specifications; inform the operator(s) that the machine be utilized for its intended purpose only, such as tramming, drilling, providing temporary support of the roof, etc.; consult with J. H. Fletcher & Co. prior to moving the machine to another mine. This machine has been designed and sold for a specific mining environment. If the machine is sold or transferred to another mine, the mining environment changes and the machine may not meet the mining specifications of that mine; contact J. H. Fletcher & Co. if rib rolls are a problem or potential problem at the mine. Arm feed bolters and some mast feed bolters (RRII, DDO, LTDO, DDR, etc.) do not protect the operator(s) from rib rolls. J. H. Fletcher & Co. should be contacted for alternative designs that give more protection to the operator(s) from hazards posed by poor rib conditions; instruct employees to read and follow instructions on warning tags and instruct them on specific hazards of the machine; constantly reinforce safe work procedures through machine orientation and the materials provided by J. H. Fletcher & Co. and other sources; and clearly state to the employees that any operator who identifies an unsafe condition on the machine should shut the machine down and report the unsafe condition to their immediate supervisor.

DRILLING

Always follow the roof control plan when drilling and installing bolts.

Never touch or hold onto a rotating drill steel, wrench or bolt. Use “HANDS OFF” drilling methods. Accidents involving rotation can result in serious injury or death.

a

Driller canopy height should be maintained just above the operator’s head, but do not pressurize the top of canopy against the roof.

a

Do not attempt to operate unless all guards and safety devices are in place and operating correctly.

Keep all parts of your body clear of the drilling mechanism.

a a

Never climb or stand on any part of the machine, including drillheads and canopies, other than the operator decks provided for this purpose.

a

When one hand is on the drill steel, wrench, or bolt, make it a habit to remove your other hand from the controls to prevent inadvertent activation of the control functions.

When starting to drill, the coupling of an extension steel must clear the hole before starting rotation.

a

Avoid pinch points between the top of the drillhead and the end of the drill steel. Remember, once a driver has been removed, the lead extension may fall from the hole at any time. Do not put your hand or other body part between the hole and the top of the drillhead.

a

If the drill steel starts to bend during drilling, the machine is not adjusted correctly. Stop operation and contact your supervisor immediately.

Driller canopies will not provide protection from falls of rib or face. If these conditions exist, contact your supervisor concerning means of providing protection from these hazards.

Machines with fast feed must be equipped with a FAST FEED (2 HAND OPERATION) system. A FAST FEED diversion valve must be actuated in order for the fast feed system to operate.

EMPLOYEE: The employee, before operating this machine, must carefully read all manuals provided with this machine. Then the employee must complete the required task training and any additional training (manufacturer orientation training) or classroom instructions before operating. To operate this equipment, the operator must follow daily all information in the Operator's Manual and Machine Mounted Operator's Manual located in the tram deck.

never make personal alterations or modifications such as placing tape on handles, adding length to handles, changing hydraulic pressure to system, removing guards, adding components/attachments where none were present as originally manufactured, etc.; never use the machine when it is malfunctioning; never use a machine that has its design altered/modified; never use the machine for any other purpose than tramming, drilling and/or providing temporary support of the roof; never fail to report to mine management and mine maintenance a malfunctioning machine; never fail to report to the next shift the condition of the mine roof and the roof bolting machine; and never operate this machine unless you are physically and mentally capable.

An impaired operator is an unsafe operator. Impairment can occur as of drug ingestion, alcohol and/or illness. Never use any kind of drugs before or during the operation of this equipment. Never consume beer or alcoholic beverages before or during the operation of this equipment.

This is a sophisticated piece of equipment. If at any time you do not feel you are adequately trained on this machine or are facing a new task with the machine that you do not understand, notify your company representative immediately.

1.4) DANGER, WARNING AND CAUTION NOTICES Each decal on the machine is important. Each decal is intended to alert the user to an injury producing risk which cannot be designed out of the machine.

Each warning decal on the machine and in the supplementary books (parts & service) addresses a specific hazard. Read and familiarize yourself with them thoroughly. All machine tags have a part number on the tag in the event replacement is required.

1.5) SAFETY STATEMENTS Read this section thoroughly. Each statement requires the operator or user to follow the recommendations to prevent serious injury or death. If you do not understand the warning or identified hazard, contact J. H. Fletcher & Co.’s sales/service representative assigned to the mine or the Risk Management Department for clarification and/or explanation.

Plan ahead and make sure all personnel in the area are aware of your intentions a beforehand, and are in the clear, before tramming.

During tramming, no one should ever stand or travel between any part of the machine a and the rib, face or another piece of equipment.

Before starting the electric motor, make sure the cable reel control is turned OFF. a Before turning on the cable reel or tramming, make sure all personnel are clear of the a trailing cable.

Use smooth handle motions when operating tram controls. Do not jerk on the tram a handles.

During tramming, no one should ride in or on the machine, except the machine operator a who must be located fully inside the tram area.

Upon completion of tramming, before leaving the tram area, make sure the cable reel a control is turned OFF. This machine is not designed to carry passengers. Only the designated operator in the tram area is allowed on the machine while tramming. The other operator shall stand clear a TRAMMING/ TRAM AREA

of the machine and should walk along behind the machine to watch the cable and guide the operator. NEVER allow anyone between the machine and the rib while tramming.

Good communication must be maintained between the operators.

While tramming to a place, you may have to raise or lower the front or back of the machine for ground or roof clearance. Stop the machine and make sure no one is in the area of adjustment. Look out for pinch points and crushing hazards when moving these sections of the machine.

CABLE

Before turning on CABLE REEL, make sure other personnel are clear of the cable.

a

Whipping cable can cause serious injury or death.

a

Make sure the trailing cable is properly routed and hung out of roadways to protect it from damage.

1. Always use proper lifting techniques when hanging cable and get help.

2. Never try to whip cable out of roadways. Pick up and move a small section of the cable at a time.

3. Always check cable closely before handling to locate exposed wire and always avoid contact with damaged places on the cable that could cause electric shock.

INSUFFICIENT CONTACT WITH ROOF

a Always follow the roof control plan in positioning the machine and setting the ATRS a system to realize the full benefits available from using an ATRS system.

Never stand or travel under unsupported roof. Make adjustments to the ATRS system a before moving the machine inby the last row of permanent roof support.

Use proper techniques for spotting bolt locations that do not require going inby roof a support.

Never stand or travel inby the last row of permanent roof support until the ATRS system has been properly set – and then never stand or travel inby the ATRS system when set in a ATRS

the working place under unbolted roof.

When setting the ATRS system, always hold the ATRS raise control fully on in the raise position for at least five (5) seconds after the system has made complete contact with the roof. This will ensure proper charging of the ATRS holding circuit.

The ATRS system will not provide proper support unless all support pads make and remain in contact with the roof during the entire period of use. If proper contact cannot be made, or maintained, stop operation, pull the machine outby permanent support and contact your supervisor.

During the positioning of the ATRS in relation to unsupported roof (crosscuts, first cuts, etc. on any roof bolting machine), follow your approved roof control plan.

Although the ATRS system generally provides the minimum support required by the roof control plan, do not hesitate to utilize extra temporary or permanent support to meet special conditions. (see ATRS sections for discussion of special conditions) Before lowering the ATRS system, all personnel must be located outby the previous last row of permanent support.

Never lower the ATRS until entire row of permanent support has been completely installed.

If proper contact cannot be made, or maintained, stop operation, pull the machine outby permanent support and contact your supervisor.

Do not continue operation, should the ATRS system not reach the roof or contact cannot be made with all support pads, position the machine outby under permanent roof support.

Contact your supervisor concerning the methods of providing proper temporary roof support under these circumstances.

Watch for pinch points in the following area: 1. Pinch point between the rear articulation and rear chassis.

2. Pinch point at boom pivot points.

3. Pinch point at the mast pivot point (horizontal/vertical).

Never start electric motor with a drill steel, extension wrench or bolt in the drill chuck.

Never attempt to drill using fast feed. The additional drill feed speed and thrust developed using fast feed will cause the drill steel to bend and break.

The drillhead will retract away from the mine roof at the end of the mechanical bolt installation cycle. Keep clear of the drilling mechanism during the resin bolt installation cycle.

Never place hand over drillsteel if drillsteel is stuck in the roof. Drillsteel could fall suddenly, crushing hand/finger between drillhead and drillsteel.

Do not position any part of your body between the edge of the drill platform and the drill mast.

BOLTS/RESIN

Use care when installing bolts. Do not get your fingers caught between the plate or header board and the roof.

When using resin bolts, always thoroughly read and follow all safety instructions provided by the resin manufacturer.

Install bolts and check torque of installed mechanical roof bolt and anchorage of resin bolt as outlined in the current roof control plan.

Before starting, thoroughly check the condition of all tools. Never use drill steels that are bent, broken or cracked.

If you will be using extension steels, the driver and lead extension should be sized so that the coupling enters the roof before drilling begins.

Use care to avoid pinch points created by coupling between extension drill steels or drillsteel falling out of drillhead.

a

Remember that after the driver has been removed, the lead extension may drop out of the hole at any time. Serious injury can occur if your hand or arm gets caught between the end of the drill steel and the top of the drillhead.

Use extreme caution when operating the drilling controls. Improper operation of drilling controls can lead to serious injury or death. For example: 1. Selection of the wrong handle because of operator error; 2. Involuntary/unintentional activation through slip and/or fall; 3. Involuntary/unintentional activation through body, tool or clothing.

1.6) Roof Control Plan Roof falls are the number one cause of serious injury and death in coal mines.

Your safety, along with the safety of your co-workers, depends upon how well you perform your job. Always make sure you understand and follow the current roof control plan for your section.

Do not hesitate to install additional temporary and/or permanent supports to meet unusual conditions. Consult your supervisor or other company official for specific operating instructions.

1.7) Automated Temporary Roof Support System (ATRS) Automated Temporary Roof Support (ATRS) systems were developed to eliminate the need for roof drill operators and helpers to travel in-by permanent roof support in order to set temporary roof support.

You must follow the procedures outlined in your current roof control plan to realize the full safety benefits available from using an ATRS system.

WARNING: Follow procedures outlined in your current roof control plan to receiver maximum ATRS safety.

Although an ATRS system meets certain basic requirements for providing temporary roof support - under certain conditions additional temporary roof support may be required. Always use additional temporary roof support as required. Consult your supervisor or other company officials for specific operation procedures to follow, before continuing operation.

Never stand or travel in-by the last row of permanent roof support until the ATRS system has been properly set and then never stand or travel in-by the ATRS support when set in the working place under unbolted roof.

WARNING: Never stand or travel in-by the last row of permanent roof support until the ATRS system has been properly set - and then never stand or travel in-by the ATRS support when set in the working place under unbolted roof.

Do not lower the ATRS system or remove other temporary roof supports until the complete row of permanent roof support has been installed.

WARNING: The complete row of permanent roof support must be installed before lowering the ATRS system or removing other temporary roof supports.

Before lowering the ATRS system, all personnel must move out-by the previous last row of permanent support. The ATRS system could be supporting a potential roof fall that could ride through the row of bolts just installed. The last row of bolts installed does not become the last row of permanent roof support until after the ATRS system has been lowered.

DANGER: Before lowering the ATRS system all personnel must be located out-by the previous last row of permanent support.

All ATRS roof support pads must be in contact with the roof for the system to provide proper protection.

In the event any or all of the ATRS system support pads will not make proper roof contact, stop operation and contact your supervisor immediately concerning the correct methods of operating under this condition.

WARNING: All ATRS roof support pads must be in contact with the roof for the system to provide proper protection. In the event any or all of the ATRS support pads do not make proper roof contact, stop operation immediately and contact your supervisor.

The ATRS system must remain in firm contact with the roof throughout the time permanent support is being installed. By holding the ATRS raise control fully on in the raise direction for at least 5 seconds, you will be making sure the ATRS holding circuit is properly charged.

CAUTION: Hold the ATRS raise control fully on in the raise position for at least five (5) seconds after the system has made contact with the roof.

If, after setting the ATRS system correctly, the system does not maintain firm contact with the roof - stop operation move the machine outby permanent support and contact your supervisor immediately.

WARNING: Do not operate the machine unless ATRS system makes and maintains firm roof contact.

The spacing between the ATRS support pads is adjustable. Always make any required adjustments in pad spacing before positioning the machine in the working place - while the ATRS system is at least two rows outby the last complete row of permanent support.

WARNING: Make any required changes in ATRS roof support pad spacing before entering working place - while ATRS system is well under permanent support.

START OF OPERATIONS AND SHIFT SAFETY The following sections are steps the operator must take to start, operate and shutdown the roof drill safely. Before placing the machine in operation, start this procedure by always performing a ‘power off’ then a ‘power on’ safety checklist.

2.1) Power-off Checklist 1. Make sure you have read and thoroughly understand the current roof control plan for your section.

2. Check with your supervisor and section repairman to see if they are aware of any repairs or modifications that have been made to the machine.

3. Disconnect the power to the machine at the power center.

4. Inspect the trailing cable from the power center to the machine. Check for cuts, abrasion, or tears in the cable which could cause shock or fire hazards.

5. Make sure the trailing cable is properly routed and supported over intersections to avoid damage to the cable.

6. Make sure the machine circuit breaker (located on the starter cover) is turned OFF. 7.

Check the area around the machine for mine hazards (roof, ribs and floor).

Clean off rock and debris from machine (canopies, tram area, ATRS, etc.)

8.

Perform required methane tests. Hold detector vertically, 12" from roof, face or rib and floor. Examination for methane shall be made prior to energizing electric face equipment. Never go beyond unsupported roof to check methane levels.

9.

Inspect all stop switches to insure that each is properly installed and in good shape.

10. Inspect lighting system and headlights, to confirm that all fixtures are properly mounted with lenses intact.

11. Regularly empty dust boxes and clean filter elements in a well ventilated area.

12. Lubricate drillheads.

Check level of hydraulic oil and fill to proper level, if required.

Perform housekeeping. Clean up oil and grease spills to avoid fire and slipping hazards. Straighten tools and supplies. Check for proper supplies, equipment and tools. Clean off slate and debris from machine.

Operate all control levers, making sure they move freely and smoothly, and return to the NEUTRAL (OFF) position when released.

16.

Make sure all controls are in the NEUTRAL or OFF position.

17.

Make a visual inspection of the machine, checking for the following:

2.2) Power–on Checklist 1.

Energize machine at the power center. Step to one side and look away when pushing the breaker to the "ON" position.

2.

Test ground fault protection circuit.

3.

Make sure all machine control valves are in the NEUTRAL or OFF position.

4.

Turn on the machine circuit breaker located on the starter box cover.

5.

Turn on lighting system, making sure all fixtures operating.

6.

Check headlight operation.

7.

Start both electric motors from inside the tram deck. Listen for any unusual noises. If any are heard, shut off the machine and contact your supervisor.

8.

Test all stop switches for proper operation.

9.

Slowly and carefully operate every control lever, making sure it controls the proper function in the correct direction and at normal speed.

10. Operate the ATRS system, just as you would in a working area.

Make sure all functions operate correctly and contact with roof is maintained.

11. Inspect for hydraulic leaks.

12. Inspect dust hoses and fittings for leaks and blockage.

CAUTION Look, listen for and identify any unusual noises or smells when starting power-on checklist. If any machine operating problems exist, contact your supervisor immediately.

TRAMMING (PLACE CHANGING) WARNING: Serious injury or death can occur from incorrect or careless operation of tramming controls.

Due to the close clearances involved, great care must be taken when tramming the machine. Plan and communicate all moves beforehand with your helper and other personnel in the area before making any machine movements.

Make sure no one is located between the machine and the rib, face or another piece of equipment while the machine is being trammed.

Before tramming make sure the dropmasts and stab jacks are raised, drill booms are swung inside, support posts and canopies are lowered and the ATRS system is properly stowed.

Also, don't forget to release wagon brakes, if provided on your machine.

WARNING: Keep hands, feet and other body parts away from wheels, drive chains and sprockets during machine tramming.

WARNING: No one should stand or travel between any part of the machine and the rib, face or other equipment while the machine is being trammed.

3.1) TRAMMING CONTROLS All of the controls required for tramming are located in the tram area. Never operate any control in the tram area unless you are seated in the tram area with your entire body inside.

WARNING: Never operate any control in the tram deck unless you are seated in the tram deck with your entire body inside.

The diversion valve, located in the tram area, directs the output of the left and right hand pumps to either the tram controls or the drilling controls. This valve must be shifted to the TRAM position before the tram controls will operate.

The speed and direction of the left and right hand tram systems is controlled by the left and right hand tram controls. A tram pedal on the floor controls the speed from low to high.

The direction in which the tram system operates corresponds to the direction in which the handle is moved.

When either tram control is in the center (NEUTRAL) position, the tram system for that side stops and the disc brake automatically sets.

OPTION(S) This machine was designed to be trammed with both electric motors running. The SPLIT/ COMBINED selector must be in the SPLIT position when both electric motors are running. Should it be necessary to tram with only one electric motor running, this valve is shifted to the COMBINED position. Operation in the COMBINED position with both electric motors running will make the tramming difficult to control.

WARNING: Operate with SPLIT/COMBINE SELECTOR in the SPLIT position when both electric motors are running. Operation in the COMBINED position will make tramming difficult to control.

To determine the correct position of the SPLIT/COMBINE selector: 1.

Start one electric motor (either one)

The CABLE REEL control must be left in the OFF position when not being used to allow oil to flow to other functions on the same hydraulic circuit. Turn cable reel on when tramming in reverse; turn reel off when tramming forward.

Always make sure the CABLE REEL is turned OFF.

WARNING: Make sure CABLE REEL is turned OFF before starting electric motors.

WARNING: Excessive cable reel speed and/or tension can result in personal injury or damage to the cable.

WARNING: Before turning on CABLE REEL, make sure other personnel are clear of the cable.

On units equipped with front lift or front and rear lift, controls for these functions will be located in the tram area.

Use extreme caution when operating either the front or rear lift, make sure other personnel are clear before operating either of these controls.

During tramming it may be necessary to adjust the position of the front or rear end. Always bring the machine to a complete stop before operating the front or rear lift controls

Many units are equipped with an optional hydraulic tram canopy height adjustment. The control for raising and lowering the tram canopy is located in the tram deck.

Use extreme care when raising and lowering the canopy. Avoid pinch points between canopy and machine chassis. Do not run canopy against the roof. Maintain proper clearance between the canopy and the roof.

WARNING: Use extreme caution when raising and lowering tram canopy.

If adjustments should be required in canopy height during tramming, bring the machine to a complete stop before operating tram canopy controls.

3.2) TRAMMING PROCEDURES WARNING: Always consult your supervisor or other company official for specific operating procedures.

Before tramming make sure the dropmasts and stab jacks are raised, drill booms are swung inside, safety posts and canopies are lowered and the ATRS system is properly stowed.

Also, don't forget to release the wagon brakes if provided on your machine.

Plan and communicate in advance all machine movements with your helper along with any other personnel in the area.

If you will be tramming forward, check the cable reel to make sure there will be enough cable available.

The helper should position himself at the rear of the machine where he can watch the cable and help direct the operator.

At no time while the machine is being trammed, should anyone stand or travel between any part of the machine and the rib or other equipment.

DANGER:

Do not stand or travel between any part of the machine and the rib, face or other equipment while the machine is being trammed.. Serious injury or death can occur from being caught between the machine and the rib or other equipment.

Adjust front end lift, rear end lift and tram canopy height to provide proper clearance between machine, floor and roof.

When operating tram controls use slow smooth motions. Never jerk on controls.

Should it be necessary to change position of front lift, rear lift or tram canopy, always stop tramming until the changes have been completed.

REMEMBER WHEN TRAMMING: Make sure machine is properly prepared for tramming.

Plan and communicate in advance all moves with your helper along with others in the area.

Keep cable reel turned OFF except when tramming in reverse.

Make sure others are clear of the cable before turning on cable reel.

Always stop tramming before operating front lift, rear lift or tram canopy height adjustment.

Do not jerk on tram controls. Use slow smooth motions.

AUTOMATIC 2-SPEED TRAM This machine has two speed tram. The machine can automatically shift tram modes from a minimum to maximum rate of speed. For example; if the machine is tramming on a level surface, the tram will be shifted to a maximum speed. However, if the machine is going up a incline the speed of the tram will slow down, but the operator will automatically have increased torque to get up hill. The auto shift mode is not a activated function, but occurs automatically.

MACHINE POSITIONING AND SETTING ATRS SYSTEM Roof/rib falls are the number one (1) cause of serious injury and death in coal mines.

Your safety, along with the safety of your co-workers, depends upon how well you perform your job. Always make sure you read, understand and follow the current roof control plan for your section.

To be effective, they must be used correctly so that the roof drill operators and helpers may travel inby permanent roof support in order to drill and set permanent (bolt) installation.

4.1) Preparing to Position (1) (2)

Make sure the outby edge of the ATRS roof support pad spacing is set.

Make sure no one is located in or around the area where the ATRS will be set.

4.2) Positioning into the Working Place (1)

Position the machine to the desired location.

ATRS control levers (see Appendix 3 [d]).

Shift the pump control handle so it is in line with the other handles and use the position controls to slowly position the machine to the row of bolts to be installed. With the machine properly lined up, hydraulically extend the ATRS pads to within five (5) feet of the rib and pressurize the ATRS. If the machine is equipped with manually adjustable ATRS pads they should be moved before the machine is positioned, while still under supported top.

Hold the ATRS raise control fully on in the raise position for at least five (5) seconds. You will be making sure the ATRS holding circuit is properly charged.

Visually inspect the ATRS to make sure there is proper contact and that the machine is correctly positioned for the first row of bolts to be installed.

Once the ATRS is set as required, shift the pump control to the drill position and the operator should then move to the drill controls.

Immediately conduct a good examination (sound and vibration method) of the mine roof in the area to be drilled and use a slate bar to take down any loose draw rock, brows, or ribs.

CAUTION INSURE THERE IS NO DEBRIS AGAINST THE RIB THAT COULD BLOCK ESCAPE BETWEEN THE RIB AND BOOM OR THAT COULD CAUSE THE OPERATOR TO FALL INTO THE BOOM.

After you and your partner have completed the bolting cycle, before lowering the ATRS, the operator must make sure all personnel are outby the previous last row of permanent support. The ATRS could be supporting a potential roof fall that could ride through the row of bolts just installed.

The last row of bolts installed does not become the last row of permanent roof support until after the ATRS system has been lowered.

5)

DRILLER CANOPIES

Depending upon the design of your particular machine, it may be equipped with either fixed or pivotable style driller canopies. Generally, machines with dual drilling controls utilize pivotable style canopies while those with single drilling controls utilize fixed style canopies.

Both types are mounted on a hydraulic support post which allows them to be raised and lowered to provide roof clearance for tramming and operator convenience during drilling.

Although a support post must maintain contact with the roof in order to provide protection during operation, a canopy should only be raise high enough to provide room for the operator.

If your machine is equipped with dual drilling controls and pivotable driller canopies, make sure the canopy is locked in position over the drilling controls being used.

Never place any part of your body between the edge of the canopy top and the machine or rib.

WARNING: Never place any part of your body between the edge of the canopy top and the machine or rib.

Do not rest fingers, hands or arms on the edge of the canopy top.

Use extreme care when positioning the drill unit.

When lowering the canopy be careful not to place any part of your body between the canopy top and the machine.

DRILL UNIT POSITIONING WARNING: Consult your roof control plan, supervisor or other company official for specific operating procedures.

Your machine may be equipped with a "hydraulic disconnect". The handle runs in front of the driller operating controls and by manually depressing the handle, the booms hydraulic functions are de-energized. Hydraulic functions are returned to the boom when the handle is pulled out.

Depending upon the model of your machine, various functions will be provided for positioning the drilling units.

Before attempting to operate the machine, you should take the time to become thoroughly acquainted with operation of each control used in positioning the drill units.

Use extreme care when operating the controls for drill unit positioning. Avoid pinch points between the drill units and the machine or rib.

Always lower canopy or support post and raise dropmast before operating drill unit positioning controls.

Consult your roof control plan or supervisor for specific operating procedures - however, we would recommend using the inside controls for drilling and installing the outside bolt and outside controls for drilling and installing the inside bolt. This will afford maximum operator protection from potential rib hazards.

When changing operating locations always position and lock the driller canopy in place over the controls being used.

7)

DRILLING WARNING: Always consult your supervisor or other company official for specific drilling instructions.

WARNING: NEVER touch or hold onto a rotating drill steel, wrench or bolt, always use "hands off" drilling methods. Rotation accidents can cause serious injury or death.

7.1) MACHINE CONDITION AND ADJUSTMENT To achieve maximum drilling safety and efficiency the machine must be in good repair and properly adjusted. If repairs or adjustments are required, notify your supervisor immediately before continuing.

CAUTION: If machine repairs or adjustments are needed, notify your supervisor immediately - before continuing.

Do not attempt to make operational adjustments yourself. Special training and tools are required to make adjustments safely.

WARNING: Operational adjustments are to be made only by properly trained and equipped personnel who are authorized to do so. Improper adjustments can cause serious injury or death.

Proper operation of the dust collection system is essential for maintaining a healthy working environment and efficient drilling. It is impossible to drill any faster than dust can be removed from the hole. Any loss in drilling vacuum will result in a reduction in drilling speed.

Clean out dust boxes after bolting each working place. Check condition of filter elements and clean when required. Eliminate leaks which reduce system efficiency.

Every Fletcher mast style roof drill is equipped with either manual flop type or hydraulic drillguides. Before attempting to drill always make sure the drill guides are in proper operating conditions.

When using the hydraulic drillguide, always make sure your fingers are clear of the jaws before operating drillguide control.

Inspect drillhead sockets, they should not be broken, cracked or excessively worn.

7.2) DRILLING TOOLS Use of the proper drilling tools (drill steels and bits), maintained in proper repair, is also necessary for maximum drilling safety and efficiency.

Before starting, thoroughly check the condition of all tools. Never use drill steels that are bent, broken or cracked.

If you will be using extension steels, the driver and lead extension should be sized so that the coupling enters the roof before drilling begins.

When using starter and finisher bits, make sure you know the difference between them.

7.3) OPERATION (DRILLING) To achieve maximum drilling safety and efficiency the machine must be in good repair and properly adjusted. If repairs or adjustments are required, notify your supervisor immediately before continuing.

Use extreme caution when operating the drilling controls. Improper operation of drilling controls can lead to serious injury or death.

DANGER:

NEVER touch or hold onto a rotating drill steel, wrench or bolt. Always use "hands off" drilling methods. Rotation accidents can cause serious injury or death.

Your machine will be equipped with either a manual or hydraulic drill guide. The manual type guide is flipped forward into operating position. Then the latch is closed. The hydraulic drillguide is operated by the DRILLGUIDE control handle which is located with the drilling controls.

The drillguide should always be used when starting a hole. Never attempt to hold the drill steel with your hand.

After the hole has been started, the guide is removed (or released) only when a joint is reached on the steel. Always stop drilling while removing (or releasing) the drillguide.

When starting the hole, feather the ROTATION and FEED controls to provide just enough rotation speed and drill thrust to allow the drill bit to penetrate the roof. After the hole is well started, The ROTATION and FEED controls can slowly be moved to the fully ON position.

NOTE: If machine is equipped with joystick - the ROTATION and FEED control are one handle - (SEE APPENDIX FOR OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS.)

NOTE:

In the event harder roof strata is encountered the ROTATION control should be throttled back, slowing the rotation. This will help prevent overheating of the drill bit.

After the hole has been drilled to the desired depth, reverse the direction of the FEED control while continuing to rotate (in the same direction). When the end of the drill steel is within one foot of coming out of the hole, center the ROTATION control and continue to lower the drill head until the drill steel can be removed.

NOTE: If machine is equipped with joystick - the ROTATION and FEED control are one handle - (SEE APPENDIX FOR OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS.) If extension steels are being used stop rotation before coupling exits the roof.

WARNING: When removing drill steel from hole always shut off ROTATION before the end of the steel or coupling exits the roof.

WARNING: Some units are equipped with a FAST FEED control lever, NEVER use this control when drilling, doing so can produce excessive drill thrust which can cause bending of the drill steels.

When handling extension steels, avoid the pinch point created by the coupling. Also remember when removing the steels that a steel stuck in the roof could fall out of the hole at any time. Never place your hand between the end of the steel and the top of the drillhead.

NOTE: Fast Feed is used for installing resin bolts (See Section 7.4), and speeding up addition of drill extensions.

7.4) HORIZONTAL AND ANGLE BOLTING INSTRUCTIONS Introduction Angle and horizontal drilling and bolting are more difficult to master than vertical drilling and bolting.

In this presentation, we can only provide a general method of approaching the tasks of angle and horizontal drilling and bolting.

Task training, under the supervision of a qualified trainer, is the only method of learning to safely and efficiently angle and horizontal drill and bolt.

Do not attempt to angle or horizontal drill or bolt with this machine until you have completed task training, as well as a period of practice in vertical drilling and bolting, and have a full understanding of the operation of the machine controls.

Further, bolters used for angle or rib bolting should be equipped with hydraulic drillguides and have a resin inserter as required.

There are two types of angle drilling and bolting generally performed with the Fletcher dual boom mast feed roof bolter—truss or angle drilling and bolting, and rib drilling and bolting. While these drilling and bolting operations share certain operational functions, they are also unique enough to require separate instructional information.

WA RNING CRUSHING HAZARD COULD RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY. MAKE SURE GUARDS ARE IN PLACE ON HYDRAULIC DRILLGUIDE AND MAKE SURE YOUR HANDS AND FINGERS ARE CLEAR OF THE HYDRAULIC DRILLGUIDE JAWS BEFORE CLOSING.

Angle Drilling (Single Drill Steel) 1.

Start with the drill mast in vertical position.

2.

Insert the drill steel in the drill chuck.

NOTICE IF YOU WILL BE USING EXTENSION STEELS, THE FIRST STEEL SHOULD BE AS LONG AS POSSIBLE – WHILE ALLOWING THE MAST TO BE TILTED INTO DRILLING POSITION. THIS WILL FACILITATE INSERTION AND REMOVAL OF THE DRIVER. 3.

Close the jaws of the hydraulic drillguide around the drill steel.

4.

Position the drill unit for drilling, using the boom raise, boom swing and boom extend controls as required.

5.

Using the mast swing (if provided on your machine), mast tilt and dropmast controls – locate the drill mast into position for drilling.

NOTICE IT MAY BE HELPFUL TO LOWER THE MAST THE FULL DROPMAST TRAVEL TO PLACE THE OPERATOR CLOSER TO THE ROOFLINE. 6.

With the DRILL FEED control, extend the drill steel until the bit just touches the roof or rib.

7.

With the ROTATION fully engaged, slowly engage the FEED to start the hole.

NOTICE IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO ALLOW THE PORTION OF THE DRILL ROD PROJECTING FROM THE DRILL GUIDE TO FLEX SLIGHTLY TO KEEP THE BIT FROM SLIPPING ALONG THE ROOF SURFACE.

8.

Continue to feed slowly with rotation fully engaged, until the bit has penetrated the surface and the hole has been fully collared.

9.

After the hole has been fully collared, realign the drill rod. Then DRILL FEED and ROTATION controls can be further engaged.

NOTICE KEEP THE HYDRAULIC DRILLGUIDE CLOSED AROUND THE DRILL STEEL FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. THIS WILL ASSIST WITH HOLE ALIGNMENT, 10.

Continue drilling until the hole has been drilled to the required depth.

11.

After the hole has been drilled to the required depth, shut off the drill rotation and feed.

12.

Close the jaws of the hydraulic drillguide around the drill steel.

13.

Turn the drill rotation in the same direction as used in drilling the hole while reversing the drill feed to retract the drill steel from the hole.

14.

Just before the bit comes out of the roof, shut off the rotation while continuing to retract the drill steel from the hole using the DRILL FEED control.

15.

After the drill steel has been fully retracted, shut off the DRILL FEED.

16.

Tilt the drill mast up to the vertical position.

17.

Open the jaws of the hydraulic drillguide.

18.

Remove the drill steel from the drillhead.

Angle Drilling (Extension Steels)

WA RNING CRUSHING HAZARD. COULD RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH. IF AT ANY TIME WHEN ADDING OR REMOVING EXTENSIONS AND IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO REACH OUT OVER THE DRILL MAST, PUSH IN THE HYDRAULIC DISCONNECT BAR OR REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE MAN IN POSITION VALVE TO DEACTIVATE THE CONTROL LEVERS.

1.

Drill, using the starter steel, as outlined into the proceeding steps.

2.

Place the lead extension in the drillhead.

3.

Close the jaws of the drillguide around the extension steel.

4.

Tilt the mast until the extension steel lines up with the hole drilled by the starter steel.

5.

Using the DRILL FEED, shove the lead extension into the hole drilled by the starter steel.

6.

Lower the drillhead.

7.

Insert the driver steel into the drill chuck.

8.

Using the DRILL FEED, advance the driver toward the lead extension steel until they are coupled.

9.

After the driver and lead extension have been coupled carefully engage the DRILL FEED and ROTATION.

10.

After drilling begins fully engage the DRILL FEED and ROTATION.

11.

Continue drilling until the hole has been drilled to the required depth.

12.

After the hole has been drilled to the required depth, continue rotating in the same direction and reverse the DRILL FEED control to pull the drill steels out of the hole.

13.

Just before the drillhead reaches the bottom of its stroke, shut off the rotation then run the drillhead on down. At this point, the end of the driver steel should have pulled out of the drill chuck.

14.

Remove the driver and the lead extension.

15.

Tilt the drill mast up to vertical.

Installing a Mechanical Angle Bolt 1.

Shift the BOLT TIGHTENER valve into position for tightening bolts.

2.

Place the drill mast in the vertical position with the drillhead lowered fully.

3.

Place an extension wrench in the drill chuck.

4.

Place the roof bolt in the drill unit – with the head of roof bolt in the extension wrench and the roof plate on top of the hydraulic drillguide assembly.

5.

Close the jaws of the hydraulic drillguide around the roof bolt.

6.

Installing a Resin Angle Bolt 1.

Tilt the drill mast back to the same angle used in drilling the hole.

Tilt the drill mast up to vertical and lower the drillhead.

Place an extension wrench in the drill chuck.

Place the roof bolt in the drill unit – with the head of roof bolt in the extension wrench and the roof plate on top of the hydraulic drillguide assembly.

Installing a Truss Bolt Due to the variety of design of truss bolts available, it is impossible for us to provide a detailed installation procedure for each. However, the basic procedures outlined for the installation of angle bolts should be followed when installing truss bolts.

Detailed information concerning the installation of truss bolts should be provided during task training. Additionally, we would suggest contacting the manufacturer of the truss bolts for complete installation instructions.

Rib Drilling 1.

Start with the drill mast in the vertical position.

2.

Insert the drill steel in the drill chuck.

3.

Close the jaws of the hydraulic drillguide around the drill steel.

4.

Position the drill unit for drilling, using the boom raise, boom swing and boom extend controls as required.

5.

Using the mast swing (if provided on your machine), mast tilt and dropmast controls – locate the drill mast into position for drilling.

NOTICE IT IS ADVISABLE TO LOWER THE MAST IN THE DROPMAST ALL WAY DOWN SINCE THIS PLACES THE OPERATOR CLOSER TO THE RIB.

With the DRILL FEED control, extend the drill steel until the bit just touches the rib.

With the ROTATION fully engaged, slowly engage the FEED to start the hole.

Continue to feed slowly and rotate fully, until the bit has penetrated the surface and the hole has been fully collared.

After the hole has been fully collared, the DRILL FEED control can be further engaged. However, be cautious as to how much thrust is applied.

NOTICE KEEP THE HYDRAULIC DRILLGUIDE CLOSED AROUND THE DRILL STEEL. THIS WILL ASSIST WITH HOLE ALIGNMENT AND REMOVAL OF THE DRILL STEEL FROM THE HOLE LATER. 10.

Continue drilling until the hole has been drilled to the required depth.

After the hole has been drilled to the required depth, continue rotating and reverse the DRILL FEED to retract the drill steel.

After the drill steel has been fully retracted, shut off the DRILL FEED and ROTATION.

Tilt the drill mast up to the vertical position.

Open the jaws of the hydraulic drillguide.

Remove the drill steel from the drillhead.

Installing a Mechanical Rib Bolt 1.

Shift the BOLT TIGHTENER valve into position for tightening bolts.

HYDRAULIC DISCONNECT A bar is positioned along the drilling controls on each drilling boom operator’s position.

When this bar is pushed inward toward the valve levers, hydraulic oil flow is diverted or disconnected from the valve units.

The hydraulic disconnect is provided in order to minimize the chances of accidental activation of the valve levers. However, the hydraulic disconnect feature is useful to intentionally divert flow from the hydraulic controls when you are reaching to insert resin cartridges into the drilled roof holes or performing other tasks that do not require use of the controls. It is a concern that the lamp battery, self rescuer or body part could contact a valve lever when inserting the resin cartridge or starting the bolt in the roof hole. Since the space in the platform area is limited, use the hydraulic disconnect bar when it is necessary to reach out and up to insert the resin and bolt or anytime the controls are not in use.

Activate the hydraulic disconnect when reaching to insert resin cartridge and bolt into roof or rib holes.

CAUTION: To insert resin cartridges in rib holes from the inside boom control location, a resin insertion tool may be used with the hydraulic disconnect bar pushed in.

8)

DUST SYSTEM

CAUTION WHEN OPENING THE DUST BOX OR CHANGING OUT THE DUST BAG, WEAR A PARTICULATE RESPIRATOR. YOU SHOULD PERFORM THESE MAINTENANCE JOBS WHERE AIR IS NOT MOVING RAPIDLY AND THE JOB IS DOWNSTREAM OF OTHER WORKERS.

This machine is equipped with a manual dust box. This box collects drilling dust During the drilling process. The dust, that is extremely fine, is collected by the dust filter (s) (1-2 filter). The heavier particulate dust will drop to the inside of the box until the operator removes it. To clean out the box, the operator must open the box regularly, depending upon the mining cycle. To perform this task, the operator should follow the following procedures: 1. Shut the machine off.

2. Open the dust box door.

3. Look at the dust filter. (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE FILTER, AS THIS FILTER WILL CONTAIN A HIGH CONCENTRATION OF RESPIRABLE DUST.) 4. If the dust filter is extremely clogged, have maintenance replace the filter with a new one. If you are changing the filter, wear appropriate PPE protection.

5. Pull out the heaver dust “fines” which have gathered at the bottom of the box.

Remove the fines by grabbing the tray and pulling out the dust “fines”.

6. When you are removing the dust, make sure you stand on the side or end that is pushing fresh air against your back so that the dust “fines” that come out are blown away from you.

7. Replace the tray in the tank.

8. Use a towel/rag to remove dust from around the gasket on the door.

9. Secure the door.

OPTION(S) WATER EXHAUST CONDITIONER

OPERATION: The MSHA approved unit should be filled to approximately 5” above the floor of the unit. The water level should be checked after every cut, and should be replenished as needed. It should never be allowed to run dry. The amount of time that it takes for the water to need replenished will vary from mine to mine, as it is a function of the humidity, the number and size of bolts being installed, and the condition of the blowers. After using the machine for a short period, the operators should get a feel for how long the water will last. Periodically, the bottom drain plug should be removed and the box flushed out, as any dust that bypasses the blowers will be collected in the box, and will contaminate the water. The time for this to occur is also a function of the mining conditions. These conditioners are NOT a substitute for proper dust tank filter maintenance and/or replacement.

CAUTION COMPONENT DAMAGE POSSIBLE THE TANK CAN BE FILLED THROUGH AN EXHAUST PORT UNTIL WATER RUNS OUT THE WATER LEVEL PLUG. NEVER OVERFILL THE WATER EXHAUST CONDITIONER. OVERFILLING EXHAUST BOX CAN DAMAGE BLOWERS AND RESULT IN SYSTEM FAILURES. Page 49

OPTION(S) PRE-CLEANER(S) Some machines are provided with auto dump pre-cleaners. The pre-cleaners will drop dust out before it reaches the dust box. A pre-cleaner reduces the quantity of times an operator must perform maintenance on the dust box. The pre-cleaner, which is adjacent to the box, will automatically drop dust onto the mine floor when the operator collapses the ATRS for movement.

CAUTION PINCH POINT MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. THE OPERATOR/HELPER SHOULD NEVER PLACE ANY APPENDAGES NEAR THE PRE-CLEANER WHILE MACHINE IS RUNNING.

DUST BAG(S) This machine is equipped with bag (s) inside the dust box that collect coal dust. To maintain your system, regularly change out the bags when they are full.

Identifying when a dust bag is full When first using the dust bag system, the operator should keep track of the number of bolts installed. Through this count, the operator will quickly learn how many bolts can be installed before the dust bag (s) should be replaced. Attempting to overfill the dust bag will result in reduced vacuum at the drillhead until the vacuum eventually stops. Then the bag must be replaced in the following method:

CAUTION WHEN OPENING THE DUST BOX, OR CHANGING OUT THE DUST BAG (S) WEAR A PARTICULATE RESPIRATOR. PERFORM THESE MAINTENANCE JOBS WHERE AIR IS NOT MOVING RAPIDLY AND THE JOB IS BEING DONE DOWNSTREAM OF OTHER WORKERS IN THE AREA.

1. Shut down the machine.

2. Open the dust box door. (Remove the dust bag when it is full only) 3. Grasp the dust bag nipple and twist it to allow it to clear the lock buttons. Lift the dust connector and attached hose and place it on top of the mounting plate assembly, clear of the center hole.

4. Remove the full bag by pulling it outward, taking care not to tear the bag on the edges of the dust box. The latex seal on the bag will tend to close, thereby preventing dust from escaping into the atmosphere.

5. Set the full bag aside for proper disposal in accordance with the mine’s procedures.

Normally, the full bag will be set along the rib, where it will be picked up and properly disposed of later. It is very important that the full bag be handled properly, since it typically contains over 60 percent of all the respirable dust particles (below 5 micron) generated during drilling.

BOLT INSTALLATION

Due to the number of different types of roof bolts and bolting systems available, it is not possible to provide specific instructions for the installation of each type. Always consult your current roof control plan, supervisor or other company official for specific bolt installation procedures to be followed on your section.

WARNING: Correct roof bolt installation is critical for the safety of everyone on the section. Always install bolts as outlined in your current roof control plan.

Two basic methods of bolt anchorage are utilized. Mechanical anchorage and resin anchorage.

9.1) MECHANICAL ANCHORAGE The critical factor in the installation of bolts using mechanical anchorage is the installation torque. Correct installation torque is achieved by using the bolt tightener valve.

To install a machine anchorage bolt, the handle of the BOLT TIGHTENER diversion valve is shifted to the tighten position. Then the ROTATION and DRILL FEED control levers are both fully engaged until the rotation stalls. After completion of tightening sequence return tightener diversion valve to drill position.

WARNING: Never hold onto a rotating wrench. Serious injury or death can occur.

WARNING: Do not rotate wrench when it is not in contact with head of bolt.

Frequent checks of bolt torque should be made - as outlined in your roof control plan.

9.2) RESIN ANCHORAGE The use of the bolt tightener is not required for the installation of resin bolts. Installation consists of shoving the bolt into the hole through the resin cartridges, then spinning for a specified time and supplying feed pressure during the setting time.

Since the time available to shove the bolt through the cartridges before the resin sets is limited, a FAST FEED control has been provided. This control valve allows the upward and downward movement of the drillhead at a rate faster than that available from using the FEED control valve lever.

This machine has a two handed fast feed system. To use the FAST FEED, the operator must engage the FAST FEED DIVERSION valve as well as the FAST FEED control valve lever.

With the diversion valve engaged the FEED control becomes inoperable.

WARNING: There are many hazards associated with the use of resin bolts.

Always follow resin manufacturer's instructions for use.

WARNING: Never hold onto a rotating wrench. Serious injury or death can occur.

OPTION(S) FAST FEED (2 HAND OPERATION) J. H. Fletcher & Co. utilizes a two hand fast feed lever. (NOTE: If your machine is equipped with a single-hand fast feed , you should contact J. H. Fletcher & Co. for a retrofit kit.)

The valve handle is located close to the boom mechanism and is isolated from the other drilling function handles. To engage the fast feed, the operator must hold the fast feed lever down at all times. If the operator releases or tries to override the fast feed lever, the drill feed speed will be reduced by one-third. Fast Feed has been provided for rapid up and down positioning of the drillhead and pushing the bolt into hole through the resin. The purpose of fast feed lever is to help the operator in the insertion of resin bolts. Never use the two hand fast feed unless you are thoroughly trained in its use and the correct method to use it. (Use P/N 159253.)

10) END OF SHIFT SHUTDOWN SAFETY CHECKLIST Before leaving the machine at the end of shift, certain procedures must be followed in order to protect the machine and help prevent accidents during the next operating shift.

When crews change out at the face, the operator does not have to locate the machine in an outby location. However, when he does locate the machine outby he must: Park the machine in a safe location away from the face, under bolted top and out of intersections.

Avoid parking the machine in an area of limited visibility such as next to curtains where persons or equipment could run into the machine as they travel through the curtain.

-

Avoid parking through curtains that could disrupt the ventilation system.

Empty and clean the dust collectors.

Make sure the CABLE REEL control is in the OFF position.

Turn the machine circuit breaker (on starter box cover) OFF. Make sure all control valves are in the NEUTRAL or OFF position.

Remove power from the machine at the power center.

Report any problems to your supervisor, including needed repairs or adjustments, tools and supplies.

11) GLOSSARY OF TERMS The following is a list of defined terms that are used in this manual: MINING TERMINOLOGY ADVANCE: Movement or progress in the mining process toward the face.

MECHANICAL BOLT: A long steel bolt inserted in a drilled hole used to support the mine roof; the unit consists of the bolt steel bearing plate, and expansion shell.

RESIN CARTRIDGES: A long plastic cylinder with a membrane separating resin and resin hardener, which is used to bond the roof bolt to the wall of the roof bolt hole, forming a continuous grouted roof support.

RESIN GROUTED BOLT: A roof bolt manufactured from rebar designed for application with resin.

RESIN MIXING: The process of rotating the bolt in the drill hole for the purpose of mixing the resin and hardener in the resin cartridge.

HOLD TIME: After the resin is properly mixed, the roof bolt must be held in position for a recommended period of time to allow the resin to harden. This period of time is called Hold Time.

FACE: An area in a coal mine where coal is being extracted from its natural deposit in the earth; the solid surface of coal being mined, the working face.

TURNOUT: A continuous miner will make a cut to the right or left side of a working entry. This area is made at an angle, and requires the operator to take special precautions when bolting in this new area (see Bolting a Turnout).

METHANE: An invisible, odorless but highly flammable gas found in most mines, also known as marsh gas.

CROSSCUT: A passageway driven at right or other angles to the main entry.

RIB: The side of a pillar or the wall of an entry.

INBY: The area toward the working face or interior of the mine away from the shaft or entrance. *For additional information on mining terminology, please consult MSHA or a resin/bolt manufacturer.

MACHINE TERMINOLOGY MACHINE ORIENTATION: The front of the machine is the end from which the drilling is performed (typically the inby end). The rear of the machine is the end opposite the front. Right and left-hand sides of the machine are determined by standing at the rear of the machine and looking forward toward the front of the machine.

ARTICULATION: Movement of machine sections about a pivot point.

AUTOMATED TEMPORARY ROOF SUPPORT (ATRS): A device that will be temporarily pressurized against the roof routinely from under permanent roof support. The ATRS will provide temporary roof support until permanent roof support (bolts are placed into the roof.

TRAM DECK (TRAM): A compartment that provides overhead protection during tramming of the machine.

TRAM AREA: An area on the machine that provides a temporary folding seat and overhead protection during tramming of the machine.

POSITIONING AREA CONTROLS: Controls (see Appendix d) that are used in the work place for positioning the machine for bolting, setting, and retracting the ATRS system. These controls are to be operated while under permanently supported roof (sometimes referred to as “the position control station”).

PERMISSIBLE EQUIPMENT: Permissible equipment can be take into or used inby the last open crosscut of any mine. Permissibility is determined by MSHA. Equipment is permissible so long as the units and all parts involving MSHA approval are maintained in accordance with Mine Safety and Health Administration Part 75.500, Title 30, CFR requirements. The equipment must have the MSHA approval plates attached.

MACHINE HANDLE FUNCTION TERMINOLOGY BOOM EXTEND: Linear extension of the drill boom (see Appendix 1) function.

BOOM RETRACT: Linear retraction of the drill boom (see Appendix 1) function.

BOOM SWING: Horizontal angular displacement of the drill boom about its attachment point of the machine chassis (see Appendix 1).

CABLE REEL: A device, generally incorporated in the machine chassis, which picks up and/or pays out electrical trailing cable (see Appendix 1).

REAR LIFT/FRONT LIFT: Angular displacement of the front or rear end of the machine above and below horizontal (see Appendix 1).

DRILLGUIDE: A device incorporated into the drill mechanism to stabilize drilling tools and/or bolts (see Appendix 1).

FEED (DRILL): Movement of the drillhead which advances the drill or bolt into the mine roof or rib (see Appendix 1).

ROTATION (DRILL): The angular output (spin) of the drillhead, which can be either clockwise or counter-clockwise (see Appendix 1).

CANOPY (DRILLER): A structure located above the operator’s drilling location that is designed and certified to withstand a specific minimum vertical load (see Appendix 1).

FAST FEED (2-HAND OPERATION): Advance or retract of the drill mechanism at a speed greater than the normal drill rate. The operation of the fast feed requires the actuation of two separated control handles [see Fast Feed (2 Hand Operation) for specific information].

FOOT: A mechanism provided to stabilize some portion of the machine against the mine floor (see Appendix 1).

STABILIZER: A hydraulically actuated mechanism used to provide support for a portion of the machine against the mine floor.

MAST PIVOT: Horizontal angular displacement of the drill mechanism, about its attachment point to the drill boom (see Appendix 1).

MAST TILT: Angular displacement of the drill mechanism from vertical (roll), either toward or away from the rib (see Appendix 1).

OUTRIGGER: A mechanism, generally pivoting from the machine chassis, to stabilize the machine against the mine floor (see Appendix 1).

TRAILING CABLE: An insulated set of electrical conductors used to provide connection between the machine and the power center (see Appendix 1).

TRAM CANOPY: A structure located above the operator’s tramming location (tram deck) which is designed and certified to withstand a specific minimum vertical load (see Appendix 1).

TRAM ENABLE: A control arrangement that requires some continuous action or location of the operator (for example, step on pedal or sit on seat) before the tram controls become functional (see Appendix 1).

JOYSTICK DRILLING CONTROL: A handle that combines the rotation and feed function into one handle. See Appendix 2 for additional information.

AUTO CABLE REEL VALVE (OPTION): An auto cable reel valve is located in the tram deck.

When activated (control lever) the cable reel will spool up cable automatically when moving in reverse. If the machine is equipped with this option the roof bolt operator must warn personnel that anytime the cable reel valve is on and the tram control valve is activated, there will be constantly moving cable.

BI180760 SAFETY TERMINOLOGY PINCH POINT (CRUSHING): An area in which a body part could be squeezed or crushed causing severe injury.

RIB HAZARD: The potential of rock/coal becoming detached from a rib and hitting or trapping a person. This hazard is also known as a “rib roll”.

ROCK (ROOF) HAZARD: The potential of rock/coal becoming detached and falling from supported or unsupported roof.

GUARD: A mechanism that prevents an individual from contacting a moving energy source.

The guard can also alert an individual to the potential hazard, before contact with the energized source is feasible. See “Guarding and Avoidance of Pinch Points” section.

INADVERTENT ACTIVATION: Inadvertent activation can be defined as (1) a selection of the wrong handle because of operator error; (2) involuntary/unintentional activation through slip and/ or fall; (3) involuntary/unintentional activation through body, tool, clothing or environmental objects; (4) operator failure to maintain contact with a specific function; (5) handle was activated more than intended; (6) moved handle in opposite direction of intended motion of movement; and (7) an activation that causes some action to occur that was unplanned.

STOP SWITCH: An electrical switch that shuts down the electric motor(s). The power to the machine is left on and the motor can be restarted at any time. For specific details about the location of this component, see the Machine Layout Drawing.

HYDRAULIC DISCONNECT: The hydraulic disconnect shuts down the operation of all hydraulic functions on that side of the machine without shutting down the electric motor or affecting operation of the other drill mechanism.

DOCUMENT TERMINOLOGY SERVICE MANUAL: A reference document provided to certified mechanics outlining the proper procedure(s) for making repairs and servicing equipment.

PARTS CATALOG: A reference document provided to enable order of individual components on the machine.

OPERATOR’S MANUAL: A reference document provided to orient the operator to the general operating characteristics of the machine.

MACHINE MOUNTED OPERATOR’S MANUAL: A laminated reference document permanently attached to the machine providing general reference for the operating characteristics of the machine.

JOYSTICK This machine is equipped with a joystick. The joystick replaces the drillfeed and rotation handle. To operate the handle and become familiar with the joystick, the operator should us the following instructions: POSITION A: This position will cause drill to raise and rotate drillhead clockwise into roof.

(Push rotation toward control valve) **(If you want to rotate the drillhead only, push handle toward drillhead) **(Pushing diagonally away from drillhead will give you feed up) POSITION B: For rotation of drillsteel into roof (clockwise).

POSITION C: To lower drillhead and spin counterclockwise.

POSITION D: To feed only for resin or bolt insertion POSITION E: Lowering drillhead only.

POSITION F: For drillhead to lower and spin clockwise.

POSITION G: For rotation of drillsteel out of roof (counterclockwise).

POSITION H: For drillhead to raise and spin drillhead motor counterclockwise.

13) CONCLUSION Every Fletcher machine has been custom designed and built to satisfy the customer’s requirements, while providing for operator safety. However, the successful operation and safety of this or any other machine can only be assured by having properly trained operator’s.

BEFORE PUTTING THIS UNIT INTO SERVICE, THIS MANUAL SHOULD BE STUDIED CAREFULLY TO OBTAIN A CLEAR KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNIT AND OF THE DUTIES TO BE PERFORMED WHILE OPERATING AND MAINTAINING THE UNIT.
