Electronic Service Tool Section 1: Using The Electronic Service Tool The Electronic Service Tool (EST) is a laptop computer based diagnostic tool used to interface with vehicle controllers. The laptop computer should be stored properly to prevent damage between uses.

The full EST package is contains proprietary controller programs, programs supplied by suppliers of vehicle components (transmissions, engines, etc.), and diagnostic procedures.

Base Electronic Service Tool Includes general Electronic Service Tool proprietary programming and specific EST vehicle application programs developed for use with vehicle controller systems.

Diagnostic Procedures Diagnostic information stored within the Electronic Service Tool that can be used to repair operational and functional problems identified using the EST computer.

Other Diagnostic Tools (E.A.Sy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool and others) Programs developed by suppliers of vehicle components (engines, transmissions, etc.). E.A.Sy Diagnostic Tool is used with the EST to: • Provide Engine Control Unit (ECU) program identification code information and ECU programming.

• Provide Fault Memory display and Troubleshooting information.

• Provide Parameter viewing, customizing and storage to a file.

• Provide engine component testing, fuel injector optimization and storage of operational data to a file.

Section 2: Electronic Service Tool Connections Subscription Key - All Dealer Applications A Subscription Key is required to install and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) program.

• If the Subscription Key is not installed at the EST laptop computer USB port, the software will not install.

• The EST computer will not open the Electronic Service Tool program without the Subscription Key.

Important: Connect the Subscription Key at the Electronic Service Tool laptop USB port. Only one Subscription Key is required per EST computer.

Flexible USB Extension Cable (4 inches long) - Helps protect the USB Subscription Key and/ or the USB port on their EST laptop computer from damage by providing a flexible connection.

Subscription Key - The Subscription Key is required to install, start and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) program.

• If the Subscription Key is not installed at the EST laptop computer USB port, the software will not install.

• The Electronic Service Tool program will not initiate without the Subscription Key. • The Subscription Key installed on the EST laptop computer must be the same Subscription Key as the one that was installed when the EST program was installed/ updated or the program will not initiate.

Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool Application The Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool software application is used to communicate with Engine Control Units (ECU) and Denoxtronic Control Units (DCU). The program is linked through the standard Electronic Service Tool vehicle applications that require its use to communicate with the installed Control Units.

Communication Adapters — USB Port Connections In this application, Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool is installed with Electronic Service Tool (EST) software and used on a compatible PC computer. The EST computer uses a USB connection to communicate with the vehicle controllers. The USB port is used to connect to the engine ECU through a protocol (DPA 5) adapter and harnesses.

Cable and Adapter Help The Electronic Service Tool contains cable and adapter help information if the Diagnostic Connector cannot be located on the machine. Place the cursor arrow over the Cable and Adapter Help button in the Tool Bar. Left click the Cable and Adapter Help button.

Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool — Introduction Section 1: Overview of the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool The Electronic Service Tool (EST) is a laptop computer based service and diagnostic tool that communicates with the controller(s) via a data bus. Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool operates from within each vehicle application of the Electronic Service Tool program to perform the following CNH engine operations: • Provide Engine Control Unit (ECU) program identification code information and ECU programming.

• Provide Fault Memory display and Troubleshooting information.

• Provide Parameter viewing, customizing and storage to a file.

• Provide engine component testing, fuel injector optimization and storage of operational data to a file.

Important: The Electronic Service Tool contains enough different versions of the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool to interface with the engines and ECU controllers used with CNH equipment.

The Electronic Service Tool vehicle application determines the appropriate Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool version. The EST vehicle application selection must include the appropriate Brand, Model and PIN identifiers.

Each version of the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool contains the interface required to connect with the supported ECU controller. Each Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool interface is similar in operation to other versions but the specific functions available may be different.

Start the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool Important: Prior to starting the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool, make sure the power LED on the Protocol Adapter is illuminated (lit). Section 5: Engine Control Unit (ECU) Communication Errors Occasionally a communication fault message may be displayed.

• A communication fault message can be generated any time the communication path is interrupted for an extended period of time between the EST computer and the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Important: Make sure the current (most recent) version of the EST software is installed on the Electronic Service Tool laptop computer. Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool prior to EST v 7.0.0.0 is not compatible with Windows 7.

• Ensure the correct Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool is being used. For example: If a vehicle has a Tier 4 engine, the Tier 4 version of Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool must be used to properly interface with the ECU. Quick Start Programming Selection When launching the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool to perform ECU programing, use the Quick Start version.

Important: The quick start button provides a method to program an ECU with the minimum amount of screen changes. This is the most efficient method to download an engine Dataset (ECU calibration file) to an ECU if downloading to the ECU is the only operation required.

• When the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool is launched, go directly to programming.

Minimizing screen changes that are viewed prior to downloading, minimizes the risk the program will crash during use.

ECU Programming Failure Restart the Electronic Service Tool laptop computer after every failed attempt (during programming) to ensure the laptop's memory resources are not over allocated.

Important: Ensure a battery charger is not connected to the vehicle when trying to communicate with the vehicle ECU. Electrical noise generated by a battery charger on the K-Line circuit can prevent the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool software from communicating with an ECU. A DPA 5 must be used to download to the ECU, DPA 3 is no longer supported.

Programing the ECU - Troubleshooting Guidelines During ECU Programming Installation Step 1: Perform the ECU download according to the procedures outlined in this manual.

Important: Ensure there are no additional programs running on the Electronic Service Tool laptop computer during the ECU programming download process.

If the programming download to the ECU fails at any point, verify the EST software is communicating with the vehicle (see Step 2).

Step 2: Verify the EST software is communicating with the vehicle. a. Close the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool program so the EST program can be viewed. b. Verify “Comm Link Up” is in the lower RH corner of the EST screen. c. The power LED light on the DPA 5 should be on continuously (steady).

• K-Line Voltage reading on a 12 Volt system should be between 8-12 Volts DC. • K-Line Voltage reading on a 24 Volt system should be between 22-28 Volts DC. Step 4: Verify Continuity of the K-Line Circuit.

Verify continuity from Pin E on the Diagnostic Connector to the connector at the controller.

Step 6: Ensure the connector and pins at the controller are clean and in good condition.

Step 7: Reset the Engine ECU • If the vehicle is equipped with a battery disconnect switch, switch it Off for a period of 30 seconds.

• If the vehicle does not have a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the Engine ECU for a period of 30 seconds.

Note: Parameters Acquisition allows for up to 10 measurable parameters to be sampled at a time.

Parameters Acquisition provides methods to: • View parameter values on the EST screen as a graph • View parameter values in a text format.

Groups - Displays a specific parameter group on the screen. Parameter groups are used to view specific parameters together to reduce diagnostic time.

Section 3: Parameter Acquisition — Adjustments and Operations The Parameters Acquisition screen displays. The Parameters Acquisition screen provides: • Sampling Frequency adjustment - The time allowed to pass between each recorded sample.

• Sampling Duration adjustment - The total amount of time allowed for the test.

Sampling Frequency • Parameter Sampling Frequency - The Sampling Frequency determines how often the Electronic Service Tool will record a parameter value. The parameter sampling rate value can be adjusted from a sample each 100 milli-seconds to a value of a sample every 1 second.

Duration of Test • Test Duration - The Test Duration determines the total amount of time (length of test time) the Electronic Service Tool will check for the value of the parameters. The selected display button will display with a highlighted (yellow) background. The purpose of each button is as follows: • Display All Parameters Button - Select to display all parameter graphic traces.

• Expand Display Button - Displays the graph over a wider screen area.

• Zoom In Button - Enlarges the graphic screen display.

Current ECU Programming Status Before all programming, Easy Diagnostic and Download Tool will read the Engine Control Unit (ECU) current programming status. Easy Diagnostic and Download Tool uses this information to determine the appropriate programming procedure for the connected ECU. Normal Machine Update — Valid Programming Currently Installed If the ECU is found to have valid software already loaded the tool will advance to a list of software files that are available as a normal update for the connected ECU. Use the Normal Machine Update procedure to complete this type of ECU download.

Blank ECU Applications - Blank ECU, ECU Reassignment, and Download Crash Recovery If the ECU does not have valid software or if the Electronic Service Tool does not recognize the software as valid, a two step programming process must be used. Initialize the ECU and then use the Blank ECU, ECU Reassignment, and Download Crash Recovery procedure to complete this type of ECU download.

1. The ECU must be Initialized and an Initialization screen will be displayed at the start of the download process. The Electronic Service Tool recognizes the ECU programming will be reassigned and will begin a Blank ECU initialization process.

2. After initialization, the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool will display a screen that lists ALL available software that can be installed on the ECU. This type of download requires: • An appropriate engine file (dataset) selection from a displayed list.

• An approval password from CNH must be entered on the screen.

Section 4: Programming - Blank ECU Initialization If the Easy Engine Download and Tool detects an ECU controller with no software installed the Easy Engine Download and Tool must initialize the controller with software.

• When ECU initialization is required the Easy Engine Download Tool will automatically display Identification Code Reading screens.

Section 5: Blank ECU, ECU Reassignment, and Download Crash Recovery This ECU software download procedure is required if any one of the following conditions exist: • Blank ECU from Service Parts - Programming an engine controller from service parts that has no software pre-loaded (normal service part).

• Wrong ECU - Programming an engine controller from service parts or from a different machine that is loaded with inappropriate software for the selected machine.

• Black ECU from an interrupted Download - Programming an engine controller that has lost its information due to an interrupted download process for a normal update.

All Dataset When the All Dataset check box is selected, the Easy Engine Diagnostic and Download

Tool will display a complete list of download files that are compatible with the connected Engine Control Unit. If the check box

is not selected, left click

the check box.

Note: With some datasets the Description field will include an engine serial number range such as (n° 72655-82158). This refers to the engine serial number on the engine case. Select the correct engine serial number range.

To download the correct file to the ECU: Locate the appropriate dataset file. Left click the Advance button. Left click the Advance

An approval screen will be displayed. This screen will require a unique password from CNH. A unique password will allow the download of the selected software on the specific engine controller. Information required to obtain the password: • The 36 character Download Request Code (DRC) • Dealer ID Code • Dealer Technician Name • Customer Name (Machine Owner) • Machine Model Number (example, MX290, CX420, etc.)

• Machine Serial Number • Engine Serial Number Note: A password will be issued according to current company procedures.

Password Capabilities The password will only allow the selected engine software to be downloaded to the selected engine controller on the existing machine. The password will not allow the same software to be downloaded into a different engine controller on a different machine. The issued password will not allow selection of a different software file for loading into the selected engine controller.

If the download does not complete correctly when using the password, the same password can be used to restart the download process (selecting the same file for the same engine). It is not necessary to contact CNH a second time to restart a download with the same software on the same machine.

Software Installation Fails to Complete If the password is typed incorrectly, a message will display saying: • Test Can Not Be Carried Out. Note: Verify the password is typed correctly. The password, is not type case sensitive (small or large letters, “a” or “A” are both acceptable).

Blank Controller Download If a controller does not have any software installed or if the Engine Download Tool does not recognize the software as a valid Engine Control Unit file (Dataset) the download will be treated as a Blank Controller Download. Downloading to a blank controller requires a two part download process: • One process to initialize the controller.

• A second process to download the software file to the ECU. The progress bar will be displayed two times. The time required for this type of download will be about 60% longer than for the Normal Machine Update download.

• After left clicking the Advance button, the download will then begin (after a delay that may be as long as several minutes). The download progress bar will be displayed.

Note: Monitor on screen messages. Some controllers may require action when the ECU programming process reaches the 12% completed point. An Ignition Key screen could be displayed. If the ECU requires Ignition key signals to proceed, follow on screen instructions.

Data Reading Display Easy Diagnostic and Download Tool will read the Engine Control Unit (ECU) current programming status. The programming information will be displayed.

• Identification Code - ECU Program Identification, the software file loaded onto the ECU. • Hardware Version - ECU Controller Identification. This is used to identify the controller component.

• SW Version - Software File Version Information • Engine Type - Engine Identifier. The engine Identifier is requested when using the Easy Tool Program with some operations.

Component Replacement - Injector Replacement Note: The Injector Replacement screen is used during the replacement of Unit Injectors on Cursor 10 and Cursor 13 liter engines. It is not used for engines with common rail fuel systems.

Injector Replacement When fuel injectors are replaced the Engine Control Unit (ECU) must be notified of the component change.

• This notification assures the Engine Control Unit will be able to tune the operation of the new injector to optimize engine performance.
