Do not operate or permit anyone else to operate or service this machine until you or the other persons have read this manual. Use only trained operators who have demonstrated the ability to operate and service this machine correctly and safely.

A27414 This excavator, with standard attachments and equipment, is intended to be used for below ground level digging and general earthmoving purposes, such as trenching, truck loading, material rehandling, and ditch cleaning.

If this excavator is to be used to lift loads, for safety purposes it is recommended that the machine is properly equipped. Contact your Case dealer and install a “Load Holding Control Device” on your machine’s boom cylinders. This system prevents the sudden lowering of the load in the event of a failure of a hydraulic hose, line, or fitting in the boom hydraulic system. Such a failure can cause personal injury or death.

Read “Lifting Loads with the Machine” in this manual and follow the instructions and safety precautions. See page 75.

Do not use this machine for any application or purpose other than those described in this manual. If the machine is to be used in an application that involves special attachments or equipment, such as forestry, demolition, etc., consult an authorized Case dealer or the Case Corporation. Changes, additions, or modifications can be required for the machine to comply with safety requirements. Unauthorized modifications can cause serious injury or death. Anyone making such unauthorized modifications is responsible for the consequences.

● To avoid getting caught in the machine, avoid loose fitting clothing, loose or uncovered long hair, jewelry and loose personal articles.

● To avoid falling, always face the machine and use the hand rails and steps when getting on or getting off.

Do not rush.

● Different jobs will require different protective equipment. Items such as hard hats, protective shoes, heavy gloves, reflector type vests, respirators, ear protection, and eye protection can be required. Before you start the job, determine what protective equipment is required. Use this equipment at all times.

● Be prepared for emergencies. Always have a first aid kit and a working fire extinguisher with you and know how to use each. See page 127 for fire extinguisher inspection, service, etc.

1. Make sure the Foot and Hand Controls are in NEUTRAL.

● Remove all loose objects from the operator’s area and cab. Loose objects can jam controls and cause accidents.

2. Move the left Control Console down to the OPERATING position.

3. Move the Gate Lock Control Lever forward and down to the OPERATING position.

● Before you start each day, walk around the machine and check for oil or fluid leaks. Replace all broken or missing parts and do the required lubrication and maintenance as shown in this manual. Clean all trash and debris from the machine, especially from the engine area.

4. Put the Control Lock Switch in the LOCKED position.

5. Rotate the Engine Throttle Control to 1/4 open.

● Make sure all persons are away from the machine.

7. Start the engine.

● Engine exhaust fumes can cause death. If you operate this machine in an enclosed area, use good ventilation to replace the exhaust fumes with fresh air.

8. After the engine is started, put the Control Lock Switch in the RELEASED position.

● Know the rules, laws, and safety equipment necessary for transporting this machine on a road or highway.

● Before you start, know the travel direction (drive sprockets at the rear of the machine).

!

If a part of the machine touches high voltage power: 1. Wa r n o t h e r w o r k e r s N O T T O TOUCH THE MACHINE and to stay away from the machine.

● Check all controls in a clear area and make sure the machine is operating correctly.

● Do not allow other persons to ride anywhere on the machine, including the bucket or attachment. Other persons can fall or can cause an accident. This is a one person machine with only one operator’s seat.

2. If you can break contact, reverse the operation that caused contact with the high voltage power, and move the machine away from the danger area.

If you cannot break contact, stay in the machine until the utility company de-energizes the line and tells you that the power is off.

● Dust, fog, smoke, etc., can decrease or block your vision and cause an accident. Stop the machine or decrease the speed until you can see everything around you in your area.

Make sure the machine lamps are ON.

3. If you have extreme conditions, such as a fire, etc., and you are forced to leave the machine, do not step off the machine. Jump as far from the machine as possible with your feet together and do not touch the ground with your hands.

● Contact with high voltage power lines, underground cables, etc., can cause serious injury or death from electrocution.

4. Then, hop away with your feet together until you are a safe distance from the machine and the electrical current. Do not take large steps.

Because of the voltage differential across the ground, one foot can be in a higher voltage area than the other foot. This difference can kill you.

Before you drive or operate in an area with high voltage lines, cables, or a power station, tell the power or utility company what you are going to do.

You MUST HAVE THE POWER DISCONNECTED OR KEEP A SAFE WORKING DISTANCE from the lines, cables, or powerstation. Keep all parts of the machine at least 15 feet (4.6 m) away from the power source. You must also know any federal, state/ provincial, or local safety codes or regulations that apply to the job site.

● Do not operate the machine if you do not feel well. This can be dangerous for you and for the people around you. ● Operate the machine smoothly. Do not make sudden starts or stops. ● You must make a judgement if weather, road, or earth conditions permit safe operation on a hill, ramp, or rough ground.

● When working in areas where traffic is heavy, always have a person direct the traffic and direct other persons for you. Have guard rails, warning signs, etc., as required for your job.

● Be alert and always know the location of all workers in your area. Keep all other persons completely away from your machine and out of the job site area. Injury or death can result if you do not follow these instructions.

● Stop operating the machine if a failure occurs. Watch the indicator and warning lamps in the machine. Listen and smell for things that are not normal on your machine.

● Operate the machine controls from the operator’s seat only.

● Drive around large objects such as large rocks or trees.

● Operate the machine within the specified capacities and limits. Lifting capacities, digging depths, etc., are shown in the Specifications section of this manual.

● Make sure that the travel route on the job site is safe. If there are any bridges, make sure the bridges will safely support the machine.

● Digging through underground cables, pipes, lines, etc., can cause injury or death. Learn the location of all underground hazards before you operate your machine in any area.

● When loading trucks, DO NOT move the load over the top of the truck cab.

● Stay away from hazardous areas such as ditches, overhangs, etc. Walk around the work area before you start and look for hazards. Do not dig a trench too close to the machine.

PARKING THE MACHINE

● Before you leave the machine, make sure the machine is parked on level ground. If you must park on a hillside, see the IMPORTANT information that follows:

3. Put the Control Lock Switch in the LOCKED position.

4. Stop the engine and remove the key.

5. Raise the left control console and raise the Gate Lock Control Lever.

6. When leaving the machine, always face the machine and use the hand rails and steps. Do not rush and do not jump from the machine.

7. Close and lock the cab door.

1. Swing the upper structure around to the front TRAVEL position and lower the bucket or attachment to the ground.

2. Push the Swing Brake Button to engage the swing brake.

If you must temporarily park the machine on a hillside, put the front of the machine toward the bottom of the hill. Make sure the machine is behind an object that will not move. Put blocks in front of each track on the downhill side.

BURN PREVENTION

● Batteries contain sulfuric acid which can cause severe burns. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing.

Antidote - EXTERNAL: flush with water. INTERNAL: drink large quantities of water or milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg or vegetable oil. Call a doctor immediately. EYES: flush with water for 15 minutes and get prompt medical attention.

!

● When the battery electrolyte is frozen, the battery can explode if, (1) you try to charge the battery, or (2) you try to jump start and run the engine. To prevent the battery electrolyte from freezing, keep the battery at full charge. If you do not follow these instructions, you or others in the area can be injured. ● Hot coolant can spray out if the radiator cap is removed too quickly. To remove the radiator cap, let the cooling system cool, turn the cap to the first notch, wait until the pressure is released, then remove the cap.

● Sparks or flame can cause the hydrogen gas in a battery to explode.

To prevent an explosion, do the following:

● If a fire extinguisher has been used, always recharge or replace the fire extinguisher before operating the machine.

1. When disconnecting the battery cables, disconnect the negative (−) cable first; when connecting the battery cables, connect the negative (−) cable last.

● Remove all trash or debris from the machine. Especially check the engine area and exhaust system.

2.When connecting jumper cables to start the engine, use the procedure shown in this manual on page 58.

3.Do not short circuit the battery posts with metal items.

● If the machine has an oil, fuel, or hydraulic leak, always repair the leak and clean the area before operating. ● Keep the cooling system clean and maintain the correct coolant level. ● Make sure that you do not store oily rags or other flammable materials on the machine.

4.Do not weld, grind, or smoke near a battery. Keep open flame away from the battery. ● Sparks from the electrical system or engine exhaust can cause an explosion or fire. Before you operate this machine in an area with flammable dust or vapors, use good ventilation to remove the flammable dust or vapors before you start. ● Engine fuel can cause an explosion or fire. Do not fill the fuel tank with the engine running. ● DO NOT smoke while refueling the machine. ● Use nonflammable cleaning solvent to clean parts.

● This machine has an electric preheater in the engine intake manifold, DO NOT USE ETHER. You can cause an explosion in the engine if you spray ether into the air filter intake when starting the engine. Severe personal injury and damage to the machine can result. ● Before welding or using a torch on the machine, clean the area to be repaired. Also, disconnect the computer, batteries, and alternator. ● Check the electrical system for loose connections or frayed insulation.

Repair or replace the loose or damaged parts.

● A fire can cause injury or death.

Always have a fire extinguisher near or on the machine. Make sure the fire extinguisher is serviced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. See page 127.

If you do not understand a service or adjustment procedure, see the service manual for this machine or see your Case dealer. ● Unauthorized modifications to this machine can cause injury or death.

Do not make unauthorized modifications to this machine. Always see your Case dealer before you weld, cut, or drill holes in your machine.

Before you service your machine, check the MSDS sheet for each fluid, lubricant, etc., used in this machine.

This information indicates what the risks are and how to service the machine safely.

Follow this information when servicing the machine.

Check with your local environmental or recycling center or your Case dealer for correct disposal information. ● When you service this machine, always wear face or eye protection, safety shoes, and other protective items as required.

● Before welding on this machine, disconnect the battery ground (−), the alternator and the controller / computer. ● Hydraulic fluid or grease injected into your skin can cause severe injury or death. Keep your hands and body away from any pressurized leak. Use a piece of cardboard or paper to look for a pressurized leak. This will help keep your hands away from the danger. If fluid is injected into your skin, see a doctor immediately and have the fluid removed. ● This machine has an accumulator in the hydraulic system. Before you disconnect any hydraulic line or hose, see the following procedure to remove all hydraulic pressure.

● Metal chips or debris can cause eye injury. Always wear eye or face protection when you use a hammer on this machine. Use a hammer with a soft face, such as brass, to drive hardened pins.

To Release Pressure:

● Lower the bucket or tool to the ground or block up securely before working on the machine. Follow the instructions in this manual when you service the machine.

Hydraulic

System

1. Lower the attachment/bucket to the ground.

● Before you service this machine and before you dispose of the old fluids and lubricants, always remember the environment. Do not put oil or fluids into the ground or into containers that can leak.

● Clean the machine regularly. A buildup of grease, dirt, and debris can cause possible injury or machine damage. Keep your work shop clean.

3. Turn the key switch to ON but do not start the engine.

4. Check the System Display Panel and make sure the Control Lock symbol is not ON. 5. Move both operation control levers forward and rearward - left and right about ten times.

6. Turn the key switch to OFF. 7. Release the air pressure from the hydraulic reservoir (remove the cap nut from the top of the breather and push the button).

WARNING: Injury or death can result if you cannot read a safety decal or if a safety decal is missing. Replace any missing or damaged safety decal and keep all safety decals clean. See your Case dealer for new safety decals.

Make sure that you read all the safety decals and all instructional decals. Check these decals every day before you start.

Clean these decals if you cannot read the words.

You must replace a decal if the decal is damaged, missing, or cannot be read. If a decal is on a part that is replaced, make sure the decal is on the new part.

See your Case dealer for new decals.

When you clean the decals, use only a cloth, water, and soap. Do not use solvent, gasoline, etc.

The following pages show the actual decal and the location of the decal on the machine.

If equipped, this control pedal (1) is used to actuate an auxiliary attachment such as a breaker, hammer, etc.

This machine has three travel speeds, HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW. When you start the engine, MEDIUM is automatically selected. Push and release the pedal (1) for HIGH and push and release again for LOW. The transmission automatically downshifts from HIGH to MEDIUM if you drive up a hill or the load increases. Then, the transmission automatically shifts back to HIGH when the driving surface levels out or when the load is removed.

Make sure you read and understand the instruction manual for the auxiliary attachment before you operate the attachment. If you have any questions, see your Case dealer.

Gate Lock Control

HIGH speed is used for level ground or small hills.

MEDIUM speed is used when the ground is rough or when driving up a hill.

2 Machine Condition Indicators TRAVEL MODE INDICATOR: This indicator shows HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW travel speed.

4 Clock Indicator CLOCK TIME INDICATOR: This indicator shows the time in hours and minutes. The time indicates up to 12 hours.

See the controls on page 41 to program the clock.

WATER TEMPERATURE GAUGE: This Gauge shows the temperature of the engine coolant. Normal operating temperature is in the green zone. Low operating temperature is in the lower white zone and high operating temperature is in the upper red zone. If the red zone of the gauge illuminates, the warning alarm sounds, and the Message Indicator shows OVER HEAT. Stop working the machine and idle the engine. Check for debris on the radiator or oil cooler and check the coolant level.

HYDRAULIC OIL TEMPERATURE GAUGE: The Hydraulic Oil Temperature Gauge shows the temperature of the hydraulic fluid of the machine. Normal operating temperature is in the green zone.

Low operating temperature is in the lower white zone and high operating temperature is in the upper red zone. If the red zone of the gauge illuminates, the warning alarm sounds, and the Message Indicator shows OVER HEAT. Stop the engine and check for debris on the oil cooler or radiator. Also, check the hydraulic oil level.

FUEL GAUGE: This gauge shows the amount of fuel that remains in the fuel tank. When the two lower bars illuminate, you have less than two hours of fuel remaining. When the red bar illuminates, the warning alarm sounds and the Message Indicator shows LOW FUEL LEVEL. You have less than one hour of fuel remaining.

6 Warning Mark Indicator WARNING MARK INDICATOR: When the Warning Mark Indicator appears you will also hear the warning alarm. Stop operating the machine and perform the action shown on the Message Panel. See the next two pages for all of the messages that can be displayed.

7 Message Panel The symbols and messages in this message panel are shown below and on the next page. As you operate this machine, the messages will change to keep you informed of your machine’s condition.

AUTO WARM UP: This message shows that the engine is warming up automatically. This feature is released when the warming is complete or by pushing the One Touch Idle button or moving one of the control levers.

ENGINE IDLING: This message shows that the One Touch Idle button has been pushed and the engine is running at idle speed.

LOW FUEL LEVEL: When the fuel level lowers to the last bar of the Fuel Level Gauge, the alarm sounds, the Message Panel shows these two symbols plus Low Fuel Level.

LOW COOLANT: If this message and symbols appear and the warning alarm sounds, stop the engine, allow the system to cool, and check the coolant level of the radiator and coolant reservoir.

AIR FILTER: If this message and symbols appear and the warning alarm sounds, stop the engine and service the air cleaner system. This shows that the air cleaner is restricted.

LOW OIL PRESSURE: If this message and symbols appear and the alarm sounds, stop the engine and check the engine oil level. Add oil as required.

OVER HEAT: If this message and symbols appear and the warning alarm sounds, the engine temperature and/or hydraulic oil temperature is extremely high. Stop operating the machine and reduce the engine speed. If the temperature does not lower into the normal green zone, stop the engine and check for the problem. Inspect the oil cooler and radiator and check the oil levels.

ALTERNATOR: If this message and symbols appear and the warning alarm sounds, stop the engine and check the alternator charging system. See the service manual for this machine or see your Case dealer.

ELECTRICAL PROBLEM: If this message and symbols appear and the warning alarm sounds, stop the engine and check the electrical system for a problem. See the service manual for this machine or see your Case dealer.

NOTE: To stop the warning alarm, push and release the Check Stop/Alarm button. Make sure you do the required service or action to remove the problem.

12. ONE TOUCH / AUTO

SELECT BUTTON: This switch has two positions, ONE TOUCH and AUTO. When the engine is started, the ONE TOUCH mode is selected and the indicator lamp next to ONE TOUCH is On. Push the button on the right equipment control lever to reduce the engine speed to IDLE. Push the button again to increase the engine speed.

Push and release the One Touch/Auto Select button for the AUTO mode (lamp is Off). In this mode of operation, when you temporarily stop operating, (for about 15 seconds) the engine speed is automatically reduced to idle. When you are ready to dig again, push the One Touch Idle button (12) to return the engine speed to the setting on the hand throttle. The delay time is adjustable from 1 to 30 seconds. See the Service Manual or your Case dealer if you have any questions.

13. ENGINE IDLE BUTTON (ONE TOUCH IDLE BUTTON): Push and release this button to decrease the engine speed to idle. Push and release again to return the engine speed to the original setting. The message ENGINE IDLING is indicated.

Push and release the backup button and the indicator lamp illuminates and the Backup feature is ON. When this feature is actuated, the following functions are automatically set:

5. MANUAL THROTTLE UP BUTTON: Push and hold this button to increase the engine speed. Release the button when the desired speed is reached.

IMPORTANT: This Backup system is provided only so you can move the machine to a repair area or finish that day’s work.

Example: The engine speed cannot be controlled with the hand throttle.

Push the Backup button and control the engine speed manually.

Example: Swing brake does not release. Push the Backup button to release the swing brake.

NOTE: If you must start engine with Backup system ON, turn key switch ON, push Manual Throttle Up button several times, then start the engine.

10. AIR CONDITIONING INDICATOR LAMP AND BUTTON: When the air conditioner is On, the lamp is On. If cab heater is selected, and the humidity is high, push this button to actuate the air conditioning.

This will lower the humidity. Push the button again for OFF.

6. HOURMETER: The engine hourmeter shows hours and tenths of an hour the engine has run. The green light on the gauge flashes when the hourmeter is running. The hourmeter runs when the engine runs.

7. CAB FAN CONTROLS: Push and release this button ( ) to increase the fan speed. Push and release this button ( ) to decrease. One of three lamps will illuminate to show fan speed.

UPPER allows air flow from the upper vent, MIDDLE allows air from the upper and lower vents, and LOWER allows air from the lower vent only. To move the selection up, push the ( ) button. Warm-Up

During the first 50 hours of operation, or if you rebuild the engine, make sure you do the following:

Before you start working the machine each day, make sure you warm up the engine and hydraulic system correctly.

See page 55 for detailed instructions.

1. Operate the machine with normal loads for the first eight hours. Do not work the engine at stall speeds.

Indicators and Controls

2. Keep the engine at normal operating temperature. Make sure you perform the Machine Warm-Up Procedure as shown on page 55 before you start operating the machine.

After you warm-up the machine, check the operation of all indicators and controls. Check the operation of the travel controls and attachment controls.

Avoid sudden movement of the machine.

When the machine is new or if the track shoes have been removed, check the track shoe bolts after the first 50 hours of operation. Then, check the track shoe bolts every 100 hours of operation until the bolts remain tight.

After Delivery Check Have your Case dealer do the After Delivery Check after the first 50 hours of operation. See pages 153 and 155 for detailed information.

Tighten the track shoe bolts 555 to 685 pound-feet (755 to 930 Nm).

1. Sit in the operator’s seat.

2. Make sure the Foot and Hand Controls are in NEUTRAL. 3. Move the left Control Console down to the OPERATING position.

4. Move the Gate Lock Control lever down to the OPERATING position.

5. Rotate the Engine Throttle knob to 1/4 open (see IMPORTANT 2: on the next page).

6. Turn the Key Switch to ON. The engine Pre-Heater is automatically actuated. Wait until the Pre-Heat message is OFF before starting.

NOTE: If required, see page 58 for the correct method to jump start the engine.

8. Sound the horn to warn all persons that you are going to start the engine.

9. Turn the key switch to START to actuate the starter motor. If the engine starts and stops, do not actuate the starter motor again until the starter motor stops turning.

IMPORTANT 1: Do not operate the starter motor more than 30 seconds at one time. Let the starter motor cool for two minutes before you actuate the starter motor again. This can be repeated three times. While the starter motor is engaged, white or black smoke must be seen at the exhaust pipe. If no smoke is seen, check the fuel supply.

Engine Manual Warm-Up

10. After the engine starts, check the instruments to make sure the gauge indications are correct. Do not work the machine until the engine warm-up and hydraulic warm-up is complete.

See the following procedure:

IMPORTANT: The normal operating temperature of the hydraulic oil is between 122 to 170 °F (50 to 80 °C), the center of the oil temperature gauge. If the machine is operated when the oil temperature is less than 68°F (20°C) damage to the machine can result.

Set the engine hand throttle knob at 1/4 speed and start the engine. Run the engine at this speed for about 5 to 10 minutes. When the water temperature gauge increases to the second bar of the green zone, do the Hydraulic System Warm-Up procedure that follows for the hydraulic system.

Warm-Up Procedure After starting the engine and before working the machine, warm up the hydraulic oil to 68°F (20°C), the first bar in the green zone of the hydraulic oil temperature gauge.

Engine Automatic Warm-Up After starting the engine, the engine warm-up procedure starts automatically.

The engine speed is preset at a slow speed. As the temperature increases, the engine speed automatically increases. You can stop the automatic warm-up process at any time by manually changing the engine speed or by moving one of the equipment control levers.

The automatic warm-up takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

1. Increase the engine speed to about 1/2.

2. Slowly rotate the bucket or tool in completely. Make sure the bucket or tool does not contact the cab or machine.

3. Slowly move the arm in until the arm stops moving. Hold the arm control in the IN position for 30 seconds. Oil is going over relief. During this process the temperature of the oil is increasing.

4. After 30 seconds, move the arm completely out and continue to hold the arm control in the OUT position for 30 seconds. Repeat this process of moving the arm in and out until the oil temperature increases to the second bar of the temperature gauge.

IMPORTANT 2: To avoid engine damage, start the engine at slow speed.

Always turn the hand throttle knob to IDLE or a slower speed before starting the engine. If you idle the engine by pushing the One Touch button and then stop the engine, restarting the engine returns the engine speed to the setting on the hand throttle. This could result in starting a cold engine at high engine speed.

5. Slowly cycle the bucket, arm, boom and travel controls three or four times to circulate the warm oil to all members.

Priming the Turbocharger Lines with Oil If the weather is cold, if the machine has not been run for several weeks, or if the engine oil filter has been replaced, fill the turbocharger oil lines with oil before you start the engine.

Parking the Machine and Stopping the Engine When the work day is finished, make sure the machine is parked on level ground. If you must park on a hillside, see the following safety message.

1. Swing the upper structure around to the front TRAVEL position and lower the bucket or attachment to the ground.

1. Turn the key switch to ON. 2. Push and release the Emergency Stop button. EMERGENCY STOP is shown on the Message Panel.

If you must temporarily park on the side of a hill, put the front of the machine toward the bottom of the hill. Make sure the machine is behind an object that will not move. Put blocks in front of each track on the downhill side. Failure to follow these instructions can cause injury or death.

2. Push the Swing Brake button to actuate the BRAKE ON position.

Do not run the engine at idle speed for long periods. This can cause a low operating temperature. Low operating temperature can cause acids and deposits in the engine oil. It is recommended that you run the engine speed at full throttle.

3. Push the Control Lock button to actuate the Control Lock ON position.

4. Run the engine at 1/2 throttle for a few minutes if the engine has been working with a heavy load. This decreases the temperature of the engine parts evenly.

IMPORTANT: If the engine stalls during normal operation, start the engine immediately.

This prevents heat distortion of the turbocharger parts.

Be very careful when you operate this machine on a hill. Make sure the Free Swing feature is OFF and the LOW travel speed is selected. Control the speed of the machine with the travel controls.

When digging on a hill, avoid swinging to the downhill side with a load in the bucket. This can cause an unstable condition. Always have the final drive sprockets on the downhill side.

Always drive straight up or down the hill.

Driving sideways on the hill can reduce stability and can cause the machine to roll over. If the engine stops when you are driving up or down a hill, lower the bucket or tool to the ground and return the travel lever/pedals to NEUTRAL.

WARNING: Hillside operations can be dangerous. Rain, snow, ice, mud, loose gravel, soft ground, etc., change the ground conditions. You must make a judgement if your machine can be safely operated on any hillside or ramp.

Hydraulic Line ShutOff Valves After you have connected the auxiliary attachment to the machine, make sure that the two shutoff valves at the base of the arm are in the OPEN position. There is an O (OPEN) and S (SHUTOFF) stamped on the top plate of each valve.

Use a wrench and turn the valve to the O (OPEN) position. Refer to the following illustration and open the valve.

1. You must know the rules or laws for safety that are used in each area that you will be in. Make sure that your trailer has the correct capacity and truck is equipped with the correct safety equipment.

2. Make sure the trailer is level, then put a block at the front and rear of the trailer wheels.

3. Have another person use hand signals and direct you as you drive onto the trailer.

4. Be careful; select LOW travel speed and drive the machine slowly onto the trailer.

5. Lower the boom, arm, and bucket (tool) onto the trailer. Use pads between the trailer and arm to protect the bucket cylinder.

6. Put the Swing Lock in the LOCKED position.

7. Put the Control Lock in the ON position.

8. Move the left Control Console up to the LOCKED position.

9. Move the Gate Lock control lever up to the LOCKED POSITION. 10. Stop the engine, get out of the cab and lock the cab door.

11. Put blocks at the front and rear of each track. Use tie downs to fasten the machine to the trailer. Remove the blocks from the trailer wheels.

12. Measure the distance from the ground to the highest point of the m a c h i n e . Yo u m u s t k n o w t h e clearance height of the transported machine.

13. After you have driven a few miles, stop and check your load. Make sure the tie downs are still tight and that the machine has not moved on the trailer.

Unloading 1. After the tie downs and blocks have been removed, start the engine and select LOW travel speed.

2. Drive the machine slowly off the trailer.

NOTE: A fully charged battery at 0°F (−17°C) has only 40% of the normal starting power. When the temperature decreases to −20°F (−29°C), the battery has only 18% of the power remaining.

If you add water to the batteries and the temperature is below 32°F (0°C), make sure you charge the batteries or run the engine for approximately two hours. This procedure will prevent battery freezing.

Inspect the battery cables and terminals. Clean the terminals and put grease on each terminal to prevent corrosion.

2. LUBRICANTS: Use the correct viscosity oil in each component. As an example: SAE 30 engine oil at 32°F (0°C), increases the starting load by about 250%. Make sure you follow the recommended oil and filter service as shown in this manual.

3. FUEL SYSTEM: Check with your fuel supplier for the correct cold weather fuel. Engine power will be reduced if wax particles are in the fuel filters.

Make sure to check for water in the fuel system. Cold temperatures can cause water to collect in the fuel tank.

Check the first stage fuel filter and fuel sediment bowl for water. If no water is found, extend the interval.

WARNING: This machine has an electric preheater in the engine intake manifold. DO NOT USE ETHER. You can cause an explosion in the engine if you spray ether into the air filter intake when starting the engine.

Severe personal injury and damage to the machine can result.

When you park the machine, make sure the track system is clean and that you park the machine on planks (wood boards). This prevents the track from freezing to the ground.

If the machine is frozen to the ground, do not try to drive the machine. Use prybars to loosen the track.

4. COOLING SYSTEM: Check the coolant mixture before you operate in cold temperatures. A mixture of 55% ethylene glycol and 45% water must be used in this machine. This mixture is used if the lowest ambient temperature is above −34°F (−37°C).

If the ambient temperature is lower, adjust the mixture. It is recommended that ethylene glycol and water be used in your machine all year.

2. Position the bucket on the ground about 5 feet from the tracks and raise that side of the machine so the track shoes are not touching the ground.

IMPORTANT: When operating in mud, snow, etc., material will stick to the track parts and cause the tracks to become too tight. Always readjust the track tension after a short period of time when operating in these conditions.Tracks that are too tight reduce the life of the undercarriage parts, especially the track bushings and sprockets.

WARNING: Do not put your feet under the tracks of the machine when the tracks are raised above the ground. Injury can result if the machine is accidentally lowered back to the ground.

WARNING: If you have your hand in the access hole for the swing ring gear and the upper structure swings, you can be severely injured. Make sure the bucket or tool is lowered to the ground and the engine is stopped before you apply grease to the swing ring gear with your hand.

4. Use a water hose without a nozzle with pressure less than 40 psi (275 kPa, 2.8 bar) to remove all soap from the element.

Check the dirty element for damage and check the rubber seal on the end. If the rubber seal feels hard and doesn’t move back to original shape, discard the element.

1. Wear a face shield and use a safety type air nozzle. Remove the loose dirt with compressed air at 30 psi (207 kPa, 2.1 bar) maximum. Hold the nozzle at least one inch (25 mm) from the element to prevent damage.

5. Allow the element to air dry. If you use an element drier, do not exceed 160° F (71° C) and make sure the air is circulating in the drier.

6. Use a light and inspect the element for holes or splits in the pleats. Check for damage to the metal parts and rubber gasket. Replace the element if damaged.

2. Mix two tablespoons of D1400 d e t e r g e n t ( C a s e p a r t nu m b e r A40910) with two gallons (7.5 litres) of water, or one cup for 16 gallons (60 litres) of water.

3. Soak the element in the soap solution for 15 minutes and then move the element up and down rapidly to loosen as much dirt as possible.

Coolant Solution

A mixture of 55% ethylene glycol and 45% water must be used in this machine.

This mixture is used if the lowest ambient temperature is above −34° F (−37° C). If the ambient temperature is lower, adjust the mixture. It is recommended that ethylene glycol and water be used in your machine all year.

NOTE: After you fill the cooling system, mix the ethylene glycol and water completely by running the engine at operating temperature for approximately five minutes. This procedure must be done when the machine is in temperatures below 32 ° F (0 ° C).

Radiator

Check the coolant reservoir fluid level every 10 hours of operation or at the start of each day. Check the level when the coolant is cold and the engine is stopped.

Do not remove the radiator cap during this check. The coolant level must be up to the line on the middle of the reservoir.

Add coolant as required to the coolant reservoir.

Check the coolant level every 50 hours of operation when the coolant is cold and the engine is stopped. The coolant level must be up to the radiator opening.

Drain, flush, and replace the engine coolant every 2000 hours of operation or each year, whichever occurs first. Clean the system and replace the coolant if the coolant becomes dirty or has the color of rust.

4. Follow the directions included with the cleaning solution.

5. After you drain the cleaning solution, flush with clean water and drain the water.

6. Open the engine air bleed valve.

Completely fill the radiator and coolant reservoir slowly to the neck with coolant.

1. Open the radiator drain valve and remove the radiator cap. Open the air bleed valve engine block for the cooling system.

8. Install the radiator cap and coolant reservoir cap. Make sure both caps are tight. Close the heater shutoff valve.

Water in the sediment bowl will cause the float to raise. Open the water drain valve at the bottom of the bowl to drain the water. Close the water drain valve. Do not let the water level raise up to or above the red line on the sediment bowl.

Remove the cover (under the fuel tank) and open the drain valve to drain water from the fuel tank. Close the valve when all water is removed.

Install the cover.

Filter Replace the main fuel filter and clean the in-line fuel filter after every 500 hours of operation.

18. After the warm up procedure is complete, move each control slowly several times to remove any air in the system. Swing the upper structure evenly left to right two turns or more.

Install new filter elements in the air cleaner. ● Tape the air filter inlet with water proof tape. ● Remove the thermostat from the engine. ● Wear face protection and drain the antifreeze from the engine and radiator. Blow compressed air into the engine coolant drain valve and radiator to help remove all coolant. ● Put about 0.07 oz. (2 g) of antirust (MIL-L-3420) into the water inlet to the engine and install the thermostat. ● Put a Do Not Operate tag in the cab.
