SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS SAFETY IS THE OPERATOR’S RESPONSIBILITY The Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator is a highly maneuverable and compact machine. In operation, it is rugged and useful under a wide variety of conditions. This presents an operator with hazards which are common for of f highway, rough terrain applications but not unique for use of Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator. The excavator has an internal combustion engine with resultant heat and exhaust. All exhaust gases can kill or cause illness so the excavator must be used with adequate ventilation. The excavator must not be used in an area with explosive dusts or gases or so that the engine exhaust can contact flammable material. The excavator has a spark arrestor muf fler which is required for operation in certain areas.

The dealer recommends the capabilities of the excavator and attachments for each application. The dealer demonstrates the safe operation of the excavator according to the manufacturer’s instructional materials which are also available to all operators. The dealer can also identify unsafe modifications or use of unapproved attachments. The attachments and buckets are designed for rated capacity and secure fastening to the Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator. The user must check with the dealer or Melroe Company literature or load diagram to identify safe loads.

The following publications provide information on the safe use and maintenance of the excavator and attachments: • The Delivery Report is used to check whether complete instructions have been given to the new owner and that the machine is in safe operating condition.

• Every Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator has machine signs (or decals) which instruct on the safe care and operation. The signs and their location are shown in the Operation & Maintenance Manual. Replacement signs are available from your Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator dealer.

• The Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator has a plastic Operator Handbook fastened to the operator cab. Its instructions are available to the operator. The handbook is available from your dealer in an English, French, German, Dutch, Italian or Spanish edition.

• The CIMA safety manual contains information for safe operation and maintenance.

• The Service Manual and Parts Manual are optional manuals available from your Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator dealer for use by mechanics to do shop–type service and repair.

• The Hydraulic Excavator Operator Training Course is available through your local dealer. This course is intended to provide rules and practices of correct operation of the Hydraulic Excavator.

The dealer and owner/operator review the recommended uses of the excavator and attachments when excavator is delivered. If the owner/operator will be using the excavator for a different application than was originally demonstrated by the dealer, ask the dealer for recommendations on the new use.

• The Operation & Maintenance Manual delivered with the Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator gives operating information as well as routine maintenance information. It is a part of the machine and must stay with the machine when it is sold .

BEFORE OPERATING THE BOBCAT LOADER Safety Alert Symbol: This Safety Symbol is used for important safety messages. When you see this symbol, follow safety message to avoid personal injury or death.

• Operator training must consist of a demonstration and verbal instruction. This training is given by your excavator dealer before the excavator is delivered.

• The new operator should start in an area without bystanders and use all the controls until he can operate safely under all conditions of the work area.

• KNOW THE WORK CONDITIONS • For each material to be handled, the operator must know how to avoid exceeding the rated lift capacity of the excavator. For example, you should not use the excavator for lifting heavy objects.

• The operator must know any prohibited uses or work areas, for example, he needs to know about excessive slopes.

• Know the location of any underground lines. Call local utilities or ONE CALL before you dig.

• Wear tight fitting clothing. Always wear safety glasses when maintaining or servicing excavator. Safety glasses,

hearing protection or an excavator special application kit are required for some work. See your dealer about Melroe Safety equipment.

* For an operator to be qualified, he must not use drugs or alcoholic drinks which impair his alertness or coordination while working. An operator who is taking prescription drugs must get medical advice to determine if he can safely operate a machine.

The excavator has several components that are at high temperature under normal operating conditions. The primary source of high temperatures is the engine and exhaust system. The electrical system, if damaged or incorrectly maintained, can be a source of arcs or sparks. These conditions make it important to avoid applications where explosive dust or gases can be ignited by arcs, sparks or heat.

Flammable debris (leaves, straw, etc.) must be removed regularly . If flammable debris is allowed to accumulate, it will increase the fire hazard. The excavator must be cleaned as often as necessary to avoid this accumulation. This flammable debris in the engine compartment can be a fire hazard when the machine is parked with a hot engine.

The spark arrestor muffler is designed to control the emission of hot particles from the engine and exhaust system, but the muffler and the exhaust gases are still hot. This spark arrestor muffler does not change the need to avoid use of the excavator in an atmosphere with explosive dust or gases or where the exhaust can contact flammable material.

• Do not use the Hydraulic Excavator where explosive dust or gases can be ignited by arcs, sparks, hot components or exhaust gases.

• The engine compartment and engine cooling system must be inspected every day and cleaned if necessary to prevent overheating. Remove all flammable material.

• Check all electrical wiring and connections for damage. Keep the battery terminals clean and tight. Repair or replace any damaged part.

• Do not use ether or starting fluids on this engine. It has glow plugs. These starting aids can explode and injure you or a bystanders.

• Always clean the excavator before doing any welding. Cover rubber hoses, battery and all other flammable parts. Keep a fire extinguisher near the machine when welding.

• Stop the engine and let it cool before adding fuel. No smoking!

• Use the procedure in Operation & Maintenance Manual for connecting the battery.

• Use the procedure in the Operation & Maintenance Manual for servicing the spark arrestor muffler every 100 hours of operation.

• Check fuel and hydraulic tubes, hoses and fittings for damage and leakage. T ighten or replace any parts that show leakage. Always clean fluid spills.

GETTING ON AND OFF THE MACHINE

Use the grab handles, the tracks and the safety treads to get on and off the machine [A].

The operator seat can be adjusted as follows: Release the seat adjustment lever (Item 1) [A]. Slide the seat backward or forward for easy reach of the machine controls.

NOTE: For ease of access to the seat adjustment lever, have the left hand console in the raised position.

CONTROL LEVER (JOYSTICK) LOCK The control lock microswitch (Item 1)[D] disconnects the hydraulics from the joystick control levers when the control console(s) are in the raisedposition. (The joystick control levers will not operate with theconsole(s) raised).

NOTE: The travel levers, blade lever, boom swing pedal and the attachment operation pedal functions are NOT affected by the control lock.

The right control console has the following indicator lamps [B]:

1. Engine Temperature Lamp – (Overheat indicator) When the engine coolant temperature exceeds the allowable temperature range, the lamp comes ON and the audible alarm sounds. STOP the engine.

2. Engine Oil Lamp – When the engine oil pressure is low, the lamp comes ON and the audible alarm sounds. STOP the engine.

3. Charging Lamp – The lamp comes ON when the alternator is NOT charging the battery.

3. Fuse Accessories (25 Amp) – This fuse supplies power for engine start–up, gauge functions, horn, audible alarm, control console micro–switches, auxiliary power outlet and the hourmeter.

4. Fuse – Lights (25 Amp) – This fuse supplies power for the cab heater (if equipped) and the rear accessory wire.

The storage compartment, located behind the operator seat at the left side of the cab, can be used to store items (Example: Operation & Maintenance Manual) and then locked [B] & [C]. The storage compartment lock uses the same key as the ignition switch.

AUDIBLE ALARM

A

An audible alarm (Item 1) [A] located in the right hand console, will sound when these conditions exist:

When the key is in the ON position with the engine stopped.

When there is low engine oil pressure.

When there is high engine coolant temperature.

KEY SWITCH The key switch has the following functions [B]: P–2343

A. Key switch is OFF. B. PREHEAT position – Hold switch in this position to activate the glow plugs for startingin cold weather conditions. See decal (Item 2) [D] for glow plug heating times and see also Page 17.

8. Boom Lower and Swing Left

SWING LOCK

A

When the swing locking lever (Item 1) [A] is engaged (locked position), the upperstructure of the excavator is locked to the track frame and will not swing. The upperstructure must be parallel to the track frame to engage the swing lock.

Flush Face Couplers Some loaders may have flush face couplers.

Wipe the mating surfaces clean (including the outside diameter of the male coupler). To engage, align the ends of the couplers and push straight in. When the couplers are engaged, the locking collar can be turned to prevent unwanted disengagement. To disengage, align the ball and slot on the female couplerthen slide the locking collar back.

AVOID INJURY OR DEATH When an engine is running in an enclosed area, fresh air must be added to avoid concentration of exhaust fumes. If the engine is stationary, vent the exhaust outside. Exhaust fumes contain odorless, invisible gases which can kill without warning.

STARTING THE ENGINE Normal Starting Procedure (With Engine Warm) Fasten the seat belt.

Lower the control console(s) to the locked position.

Put all control levers in the neutral position [A].

Make sure the engine stop control knob is down [B].

Turn the key to the START position (Inset) [B].

When the engine is started, release the key and it will return to the run (ON) position.

Stop the engine if the warninglights and audible alarm do not go OFF. Check for the trouble before starting the engine again.

Cold Temperature Starting Procedure Use the following procedure to make starting easier:

Replace the engine oil with the correct type and viscosity for the anticipated starting temperature. (See Oil Specifications, Page 63.)

Make sure the battery is fully charged.

Do not use ether with glow plugs (preheat) systems. Explosion can result which can cause injury or death.

Follow the steps under Normal Starting Procedure and repeat the steps below until engine starts: Push the speed control lever fully forward (Position 2) [A].

Turn the key to HEAT position. The light will come on [B].

Preheat the engine for 10 seconds to 30 seconds maximum depending on ambient air temperature [C].

Release the key, and it will return to the run (ON) position.

When operating in water or crossing streams, first check the soil conditions, depth and flow of water . Never operate in water higher than the bottom of the swing circle.

OPERATING PROCEDURE Breaking in a New Machine When operating on a public road or highway , always follow local regulations. For example: Slow Moving Vehicle Sign or Directional Signals may be required.

NOTE: Be careful when removing the machine from water. The engine may become filled with water and damage could result.

A new machine requires careful operation during the first 100 hours to break in various parts.

If a machine is subjected to hard use during the initial operation, the performance and service life will be reduced.

Do not operate the machine when visibility is poor (fog, mist or smoke).

If it is necessary to operate the control levers when moving the machine near a clif f, road shoulders, or sloping ground, stop the machine travel before operating any work equipment levers.

Do the following when operating a new machine:

Do not dig under the machine.

• After starting, let the engine idle for 5 minutes so the engine and components can warm up.

Check with utility companies, for underground electrical, water, gas lines, etc. Work slowly in areas of underground utilities.

• Avoid operation with heavy loads or at high speeds.

• Avoid sudden starting or stopping or abrupt motions.

Do not allow the bucket teeth to contact the groundwhen swinging the upperstructure.

General Operation Suggestions

Do not use the bucket as a breaker or pile driver. It is better to excavate hard or rocky ground after breaking it with other equipment. This will reduce damage to the machine.

When operating on uneven ground or in places where there are obstacles, do the following: • Operate as slow as possible and avoid sudden changes in direction.

• Avoid traveling over objects (such as rocks, trees, stumps, etc.).

To brake the machine when going down a slope, put the steering levers in NEUTRAL position. This will engage the hydrostatic braking.

When the engine stops on a slope, move the steering levers to the neutral position. Lower the boom/bucket.

When working in wet or soft ground, put planking on the ground to prevent the machine from getting stuck. If the machine is stuck in soft soil, use the following procedure to move the machine to firm ground:

NOTE: The ignition switch must be in the ON position with the engine stopped to activate the accumulator pressure to lower the boom/bucket to the ground.

• If one track or both tracks are stuck in soft soil, push the bucket down against the ground to raise the track (or tracks, one side at a time) off the ground.

Start the engine and resume the operation.

• Place timber (planks) under the track(s) and drive the machine to firm ground.

• It may help to put the bucket into the ground in front and move the arm as if you were digging to help move the machine.

Do not move the machine with the bucket in the ground or trench.

Know where the first aid kit and fire extinguisher are and know how to use them. Know how to contact emergency assistance.

over 15 degrees to the side, or to the back of machine or 25 degrees to the front. Keep boom centered while traveling.

• Keep attachments as low as possible when traveling on slopes or in rough conditions.

Stop the machine travel before moving the upper equipment controls. Never allow the blade to strike a solid object. Damage to the blade or hydraulic cylinder can result.

RECOMMENDED POSITION FOR WORKING ON A SLOPE

It is recommended to level the work area [C].

If this is not possible, the following procedures should be used: MC–1865C

Do not work on slopes which are over 15 degrees.

Slow down the work cycle. Avoid working with the tracks across the slope as this reduces stability and increases the tendency for the machine to slide. Position the excavator with the blade down hill and lowered.

Avoid swinging or extending the bucket farther than necessary in a down hill direction. When you must swing the bucket down hill, keep the dipper arm low and skid the bucket downhill.

When working with the bucket on the uphill side, keep the bucket as close to the ground as possible. Dump the spoil far enough away from the trench or hole to prevent the possibility of a cave in.

Operating in Water Mud and water should be removed from the machine before parking. If possible, park the machine on boards or concrete to prevent the track or undercarriage from freezing to the ground and preventing machine movement.

Do not operate or immerse the Excavator in water higher than the bottom of the swing circle [A].

Water Level

Properly grease the Excavator when it has been operated or immersed in water for a period of time.

Water must be removed from the cylinder rods. If water freezes to the cylinder rod, the cylinder seals can be damaged when the rod is retracted.

Run the engine at idle speed forabout 5 minutes to allow it to cool.

TRANSPORTING THE HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR Make sure the parking brakes on the transport vehicle are engaged and wheels are blocked.

A

Align the ramps with the center of the transport vehicle.

Secure the ramps to the truck bed and be sure ramp angle does not exceed 15 degrees.

Use metal loading ramps and slip resistant surface.

Make sure the ramps are the correct length and width, and can support the weight of the machine.

Determine the direction of the track movement before moving the machine (blade forward). Engage the swing lock pin to lock the upperstructure.

Move the machine forward onto the transport vehicle[A].

Do not change direction of the machine while it is on the ramps.

After loading the machine, position the armand bucket as shown [B].

Lower the boom.

Stop the engine and remove the key . Use the following procedure to fasten the Excavator to the transport vehicle: P–2277

Fasten holddown chains to the front corners of the blade and to the tie down loop at the rear of the track frame to prevent it from moving when going up or down slopes,or during sudden stops [C] & [D].

Use chain binders to tighten the chains and then safety tie the chain binder levers to prevent loosening.

Put blocks under the front and rear of the track shoes.

When transporting the machine, observe the rules, motor vehicle laws and vehicle limit ordinances. Use a transport and towing vehicle of adequate length and capacity.

Adequately designed ramps of sufficient strength are needed to support the weight of the machine when loading onto a transport vehicle. Wood ramps can break and cause personal injury.

LIFTING THE EXCAVATOR

Fully extend the cylinders of the bucket, arm & boom.

Put the work equipment control levers in neutral and engage the swing locking lever.

• Maintain center of gravity and balance when lifting.

• Do not swing boom or upperstructure.

Install a bolt (Item 1) [A] through the lift plate holes and fasten with a nut.

Connect the lifting chain hook to the bolt [A].

Connect the lifting chain hooks to the left and right sideof the rear frame (Item 2) [A].

Install a spreader bar (Item 3) [A] above the canopy to prevent the lifting fixture from hitting the ROPS and the rear engine cover.

To install the chain assembly: Extend bucket cylinder fully. Stop the engine.

CAB/CANOPY

A

The excavator has an operator canopy (ROPS) as standard equipment. An enclosed cab (ROPS) is provided as an option. Both the canopy and cab provide operator protection from a rollover.

Never modify operator cab by welding, grinding, drilling holes or adding attachments unless instructed to do so by Melroe Company.

Changes to the cab can cause loss of operator protection from rollover and falling objects, and result in injury or death.

Engine Oil and Filter Replacement (Cont’d) The valve cover oil fill cap can be used for adding oil in place of the dipstick tube, but use a protective, heat resistant shield over the muffler to protect yourself from the hot muffler [A].

COOLING SYSTEM Coolant Level When the engine is cool, remove the radiator cap [B].

The coolant level must be 3/4’’–1’’ (19–25 mm) below the filler neck at the radiator.

Coolant Replacement

Propylene Glycol Add premixed coolant; 47% water and 53% propylene glycol to the recovery tank if the coolant level is low.

One gallon and one pint of propylene glycol mixed with one gallon of water is the correct mixture of coolant to provide a –34° F (–37° C) freeze protection.

Use a refractometer to check the condition of propylene glycol in your cooling system.

Run the engine at idle speed for about 5–10 minutes to remove the air from the cooling system (leave the radiator cap off during this operation).

Stop the engine. Check the coolant level and add as needed to bring it 3/4’’–1’’ (19–25 mm) below the filler neck. Install the radiator cap and tighten.

Wear safety glasses to prevent eye injury when any of the following conditions exist: • When fluids are under pressure.

• Flying debris or loose material is present.

• Engine is running.

• Tools are being used.

This loader is factory equipped with a U.S.D.A. Forestry Service approved spark arrestor muffler. It is necessary to do maintenance on this spark arrestor muffler to keep it in working condition. The spark arrestor muffler must be serviced by dumping the spark chamber every 100 hours of operation.

ALTERNATOR BELT ADJUSTMENT

A

To adjust the belt tension, use the following procedure: Stop the engine. Open the engine cover.

The belt should deflect about 5/8’’ (16 mm) when pressed between the water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley with approximately 22 lbs. (10 kg) pressure [A].

If the tension is not correct, loosen the alternator mounting bolt.

Loosen the adjustment bolt [B].

Move the alternator until the belt tension is correct.

Replace the belt if it has stretched or there are cracks in the belt. Check the pulley grooves, make sure the belt is not in contact with the bottom of the groove in the pulleys.

Fuses The following fuses protect these circuits from overload: 1. 25 amp: This fuse protects the light switch circuit and it supplies power to the cab (if equipped) [A].

2. 25 amp: This fuse protects the ignition circuit, the auxiliary power outlet and the hourmeter [A].

3. 25 amp: This fuse protects the heater circuit (if equipped) and the rear accessory wire [A].

4. 5 amp: This fuse protects the cab electrical circuit; wipers, washer and interior light (if equipped) [B].

Replace all fuses with the same type and capacity.

The battery cables must be clean and tight [D]. Remove any acid or corrosion from the battery and cables using a sodium bicarbonate and water solution. Cover the battery terminals and cable ends with battery saver grease.

If the battery cables are removed for any reason, disconnect the negative (–) cable first and, when installing the battery cables, make the last connection the negative (–) cable to the battery.

With factory equipped battery , no maintenance is needed. This is a maintenance free battery.

If the machine has had a Melroe parts replacement battery installed, check the electrolyte level in the battery .

Clean the housing where the filter gasket makes contact.

Put clean hydraulic fluid on the gasket. Install the new filter element and hand tighten only.

Start the engine. Run the machine through the hydraulic functions. Stop the engine. Check the fluid level at the reservoir and add as needed. Check the filter area for leaks.

Filter Screen The 100 mesh filter in the port block, removes contamination from the fluid returning from the travel motors and swing motor.

When making repairs on hydrostatic and hydraulic systems, clean the work area before disassembly and keep all parts clean. Always use caps and plugs on hoses, tubelines and ports to keep dirt out. Dirt can quickly damage the system.

Adjustment Raise one side of the machine (approximately 4 inches) using the boom and arm as shown in [A].

Raise the blade fully and install jackstands under the blade and the track frame [A]. Operate the boom until all machine weight is on the jackstands.

One gallon and one pint of propylene glycol mixed with one gallon of water is the correct mixture of coolant to provide a –34°F (–37°C) freeze protection.

Use a refractometer to check the condition of propylene glycol in your cooling system.

WARRANTY EXCAVATOR

During the warranty period, the authorized selling Melroe Excavator dealer shall repair or replace, at his option, without charge for parts and labor, any part of the Melroe Excavator product which fails because of defects in material and workmanship. The owner shall provide the authorized excavator dealer with prompt written notice of the defect and allow reasonable time for replacement or repair.

Melroe may, at its option, request failed parts to be returned to the factory. Travel time of mechanics and transportation of the Melroe product to the authorized excavator dealer for warranty work are the responsibility of the owner.

Warranty does not cover replacement of scheduled service items such as oil, filters, turn–up parts, and other high–wear items. The warranty does not cover damages resulting from abuse, accidents, alterations, air flow obstructions, or failure to maintain or use the Melroe attachment according to the instructions applicable to it.

THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES (EXCEPT THOSE OF TITLE), EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AND THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
