Speed sensor retainer orientation is critical for proper operation.

A. Sensor Body

A. Inspect the sensor body for chips, cracks and broken pieces. Replace the sensor if any damage is detected.

B. Inspect the sensor retainer for cracks, bends and deformities. Sensor retainer orientation is critical to proper sensor and electronic control operation. Do not attempt to reposition the sensor in the retainer. C. Inspect the connector body for cracks and impact damage. Inspect the locking tangs for damage which might prevent proper harness connector installation and seating. Replace the sensor if any damage is detected. Inspect the terminals for any damage which might prevent proper seating with mating terminals. Reference the Troubleshooting Manual TS3192 for terminal replacement procedures and ohmmeter pin-out checks. D. Replace the sensor O-ring if it is fretted or if it does not properly fit on the sensor or in the sensor bore.

NOTE: During installation, sensors must be properly and thoroughly seated in their bores before installing retaining bolt. Improper installation can cause sensor damage and erratic speed sensor signals which can affect shift quality.
