A. Inspect the housing for impact damage, chips and cracks. Inspect bolt holes for damaged threads. Replace the housing if damage cannot be repaired. NOTE: If cracks are detected on the four-wheel drive adapter housing, perform thorough driveline analysis checks to ensure driveline components are within specifications. B. Inspect machined surfaces for damage which might prevent proper sealing and/or seating. Inspect for deep scratches, scoring, grooves, nicks, burrs, chips and cracks. Replace the housing if damage cannot be repaired using a soft stone or crocus cloth.

C. Inspect the output speed sensor for obvious external damage. Replace the sensor if it has body, terminal or connector damage. Inspect the seal ring for wear, damage and proper fit on the sensor and in its bore. Speed sensor resistance can be checked using an ohmmeter. Reference Troubleshooting Manual TS3192 for procedures and specifications. Inspect the output speed sensor bore for scoring, nicks, burrs, chips or cracks. Replace the housing if the damage cannot be repaired using a soft stone or crocus cloth. D. Replace the output speed sensor tone wheel if any teeth are chipped, missing, damaged or worn in a way that changes a tooth’s original shape. Inspect the internal splines for burrs, twisting or signs of battering. Replace the tone wheel if spline damage cannot be repaired using a soft stone or crocus cloth. Inspect the tone wheel’s contact surface faces for scoring, grooves, nicks and other damage which might prevent proper component seating. Replace the tone wheel if face damage cannot be repaired using a soft stone or crocus cloth.
