Foreword

The new 911. Tradition. Future.

Since the first model line, the Porsche 911 has impressed with superior and constantly state-of-the-art technology.

And the new generation of the 911 continues to impress through technological developments which correspond to the requirements of the market and the changed needs of its customers.

With newly-developed 6-cylinder bi-turbo engines, which, in addition to the typical driving characteristics of a flat engine, guarantee more power at significantly reduced fuel consumption and 14% lower exhaust emissions. Despite turbochargers, the new exhaust systems retain the sound typical of flat engines, which is sure to greatly

The new 911 model range is equipped with an engine generation that offers enhanced driving dynamics and increased torque. A torque increase that is unequalled in the history of the 911 on both the Carrera and Carrera S with the introduction of a new engine generation.

Also in this model range, the iconic design of the 911 has been further developed at certain points and with a great sense of proportion. True to the old-established Porsche principle: “form follows function”.

Improved safety and comfort are provided by the latest lighting and assistance systems, such as Porsche Active Safe and the multi-collision brake, which is unique in this segment.

The new Porsche Communication Management system, including online navigation module and the integration of Apple Car Play, are impressive evidence of forwardlooking technologies in a vehicle that, like its predecessors, will set new standards in its class.

The surface of the cylinder lining is subsequently honed in several stages to achieve the lowest possible frictional resistance and a defined oil retention volume.

It features seven main bearing journals, and a support bearing, and has 12 balancing weights. Main bearing 4 is designed as a thrust bearing. Axial play is determined by two thrust plates, which are inserted on the left and right of the bearing.

The main bearings are designed as plain bearings with a diameter of 63 mm.

Main bearings 1/3/5/7/8 are smooth bearings, while main bearings 2/4/6 are grooved bearings.

These grooved bearings supply oil to the lubrication points of the crankshaft bearings.

The drive mechanism for the two drive chains for the camshafts and demandcontrolled oil pump is located on the pulley side.

The stroke of the new generation of engines is 76.4 mm, almost identical to that of the predecessor engine. A reduced displacement is achieved through a smaller bore.

The bore dimension on the new generation of engines is 91 mm compared to 97 mm and 102 mm of the previous models.

Aluminum forged pistons of 91 mm in diameter are installed in the engine of the 911 Carrera model year 2017. The diameter of the pin eye is 22 mm, the same as that of the predecessor engine. The first ring groove is hard anodized due to the higher loads. The part number, tolerance class and installation position are marked on the piston crown.

Repair The procedures in the Workshop Manual relating to the position of the arrow marking and the data matrix code must be observed during installation.

The oil pan of the 911 Carrera model year 2017 engine is a two-piece design. Both parts are made from plastic and have integrated air/oil separators.

The plastic oil pan is dimensioned so that the engine can be set down on a DIN A4 size rubberized base.

The plastic lower section of the oil pan is designed to absorb impacts without the plastic breaking.

Oil drain plug The oil drain plug is also made of plastic and must be replaced when removed.

Service Only the oil drain plug including sealing ring is available as a spare part. In the workshop, the oil drain plug must be removed using a suitable phillips screwdriver.

Cylinder heads that have been significantly modified compared to the predecessor are used. They are cast from AlSi7MgCu0.5 using the Rotacast process and subsequently undergo T6 heat treatment (see description note on page 8).

The new central injector position means that the two camshafts are moved further apart to a distance of 147 mm.

Timing chains As on the predecessor model, the intake and exhaust camshafts of both cylinder banks are each driven via a duplex roller chain with 8-mm pitch.

Due to the greater camshaft distance, the chain on the 911 Carrera model year 2017 now consists of 146 links (predecessor: 142 links).

The spring preload of the chain tensioner was reduced compared to the engine of the predecessor to prevent the volume of retained oil from causing chain rattling during warm starting.

The chain drive of the oil pump is the same as that of the predecessor engine.

The oil pump generates an oil flow rate of up to 80 l/min; the oil pressure is fully adjustable within a range of 21.7 to 72.5 psi (1.5 to 5.0 bar).

Pressure build-up occurs in two stages with a fully variable vane cell pump and an additional upstream constant pressure stage.

The engine of the 911 Carrera model year 2017 features a new variable oil pump.

In the cylinder heads and the two exhaust turbochargers, the oil is extracted by a double gear-type extraction pump. The number of extraction pumps has been halved compared with the predecessor engine (two-in-one principle).

The failsafe control is integrated in the control valve.

As with the predecessor model, the crankcase on the engine of the 911 Carrera model year 2017 incorporates spray nozzles for cooling the piston crowns. An upstream pressure valve ensures that the spray nozzles only open at higher loads and temperatures. The fuel low pressure is regulated via the voltage, so that a pressure of 50.7 to 87 psi (3.5 to 6 bar) is generated. Carrera 4 The control unit for activation of the electric 3-phase AC fuel pump is also located under the battery holder. The direct fuel injection (DFI) system has been completely revised. A new feature is the central injector position of the 7-hole injectors in the cylinder head (predecessor models: side injector position with 4 or 6-hole injectors) and the increased fuel high pressure. characteristics so strongly that, despite the use of turbochargers, it was possible to dispense with secondary-air injection.

On each of the cylinder heads, a high-pressure fuel pump with quantity control valve is located, which has been acoustically enhanced. The single-piston high-pressure pumps are actuated by triple cams on the intake camshafts via roller tappets. The fuel high-pressure sensor is installed in the high-pressure connecting line between.

Following a reset (e.g. after programming the DME control unit), adaptation of the electronic throttle must be performed using the PIWIS Tester. For this purpose, the lower stop (throttle valve closed) is taught.

Expansion intake manifold

The 911 Carrera model year 2017 models feature an expansion intake manifold to improve engine efficiency. The compressed air is cooled again at the expansion point downstream of the distribution pipe. This improves engine performance and enables favorable fuel consumption at high loads and engine speeds.

The sound of a flat engine is something very special and contributes significantly to the particularly emotional driving experience in a 911 Carrera. The sound is especially DME engine electronics

emotional in the higher engine speed range. The use of turbo technology in the 911 Carrera models naturally affects the character of the engine sound. In order that the 911 Carrera continues to offer an emotional sound experience that is typical for Porsche, three completely new exhaust systems were developed.

2.7.2

Emission control

The engines and the emission control are designed for low exhaust gas raw emissions and comply with all emissions regulations worldwide.

Exhaust manifold

All vehicles have welded double-wall exhaust manifolds made of stainless steel sheet with air-gap insulation (LSI) and 3-in-1 merging (robust through beading of inner shell).

Low heat radiation is achieved through the double wall and an air gap.

Catalytic converter

On the Carrera and Carrera S, ceramic substrates with bores for the oxygen sensors and single-branch outlet to the rear muffler are installed upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter. Switchable coolant pump A new feature of the thermal management system is a switchable coolant pump.

Depending on the cooling requirement, this is switched according to demand in two DME engine electronics

Active cooling-air flaps

The Porsche vehicle cooling system is designed for use on the race track where large volumes of cooling air are guided through the side radiators.

Due to the reduced cooling requirement away from the race track, the air flow can be restricted using the air flaps. This results in less air flowing through the vehicle,

which can achieve a reduction in drag.

The cooling-air flaps of 911 Carrera MY 2017 models enable demand-based power unit cooling at all times, resulting in increased aerodynamic efficiency that is noticeable in reduced fuel consumption in the NEDC but, above all, in customeroriented driving.

For control of the cooling-air flaps, cooling requirements are determined for the

engine, transmission and air conditioning and the power losses due to vehicle through-flow and the electric radiator fans are also taken into account. With regard to the overall vehicle efficiency, this enables real-time calculation of the optimum combination of cooling-air flap position and radiator fan activation for the momentary Cooling-air flaps

Sport Chrono package

On vehicles with the Sport Chrono package option, the various driving modes are now no longer selected using buttons on the center console, but instead via a rotary

selector switch, known as the mode switch, located in the redesigned steering wheel.

With the Sport Chrono package, the standard SPORT button in the center console is omitted.

Individual mode is now available in addition to the three existing modes Normal, SPORT and SPORT PLUS. The settings for the sports exhaust system, auto start/stop function via a corresponding menu in the instrument cluster. The stored combination can be

Inspired by motor sport, the SPORT Response button on the 911 Carrera MY 2017 gives the driver the option of changing the responsiveness of the vehicle directly at the press of a button.

SPORT Response mode is intended to condition the vehicle for the fastest responsiveness, in order to, for example, shorten an overtaking maneuver.

closed, which causes boost pressure to build up significantly more quickly.

The engine responds much more spontaneously to accelerator pedal commands and reaches maximum power more quickly. At the same time, the PDK switches to a special shift map. While pressing the SPORT Response button at full throttle does not result

in a gearshift, in the part-load range, the PDK immediately reverts to an engine speed range between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm. At this point, the shift map is moved upwards again so that the PDK only switches to the next-higher gear at a later time, thereby retaining the extremely direct responsiveness of the high engine speed range for a few hundred revolutions longer.

A circular indicator and a countdown timer on the display in the instrument cluster indicate how much longer the SPORT Response function will remain active before the vehicle reverts back to the previously selected mode after 20 seconds have elapsed.

Intelligent trailing throttle fuel cutoff (vehicles with PDK)

With intelligent trailing throttle fuel cutoff (ISA), the application is optimized for the interaction between engine and PDK transmission in order to achieve further fuel consumption benefits. The resumption speed of the engine has been reduced to 860 rpm (previously 1,088 rpm). This was made possible through detection of

the brake pressure. When driving in virtual gears (with the clutch not fully closed), releasing the accelerator pedal triggers downshifts to enable prolonged deceleration operation of the engine.

2.9.6

Virtual gears

The virtual transmission ranges already familiar from the 911 Turbo were implemented in conjunction with the PDK to increase efficiency. If the transmission control detects that the vehicle is travelling at a constant speed at low load, it shifts to a higher gear until the engine would in theory turn at approx. 800 rpm. This presents an enormous fuel-saving potential.

Extended auto start/stop function

Specific optimizations of the PDK also contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption on the 911 Carrera MY 2016 models. A controlled rear-differential lock with maximum locking torque of 737 ft lbs (1000 Nm) is available as an option for the PDK transmission (not for basic rear-wheel-drive version).

Virtual gears

The virtual transmission ranges already familiar from the 911 Turbo were implemented in conjunction with the PDK to increase efficiency. If the transmission control detects that the vehicle is travelling at a constant speed, it shifts to a higher gear until the engine would in theory turn at approx. 800 rpm.

does not increase wear. The driver remains totally unaware of these sophisticated technical processes.

3.3.5

Coasting function

Power transmission

Like the existing coasting function used on the 911 Carrera (991) models with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the 911 Turbo (991) models also feature the coasting function. By opening the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and PTM clutches and disengaging the engine and front drive system, this function offers further potential for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The purpose of coasting is to make better use of the vehicle’s kinetic energy. This is done by automatically disengaging the engine and keeping it at idle speed when the vehicle is in zero load condition (accelerator pedal not pressed). This allows the vehicle to roll an additional distance therefore using less fuel. The fuel saving during practical overcome the rolling and air resistance and no longer to drag along the engine at high engine speeds.

3.3.6

Operating and display concept

Function Additional new features have been introduced to enhance performance: The shifting direction for manual actuation has been reversed and now has the same logic as in the 911 GT3 and motor sports: the selector lever is pushed forward to downshift and pulled back to upshift.

In addition, automatic upshifts are suppressed in manual mode so that the driver maintains full control of the gearshifts. The engine now operates within the rev-limiter, which is clearly audible and emphatically indicates that an upshift is required.

The system comprises two electromechanical actuators, which are installed in the left and right of the rear axle instead of the conventional toe control arms. Using these actuators, the system steers the rear axle of the new 911 Carrera models either in the opposite or same direction as the steering angle at the front axle with an interval

The steering angle at the rear axle therefore depends above all on the steering angle at the steering wheel, the driving situation and the driving speed.

The maximum wheel angle movement of the rear axle on the 911 Carrera 2/4 S MY 2017 is 2.00° (max. 2.92° on the 911 Turbo and GT3). The adjustment ratio at the wheel [degrees] / spindle stroke [mm] is 1:4.6. This means that the spindle must be moved by 4.6 mm to adjust the wheel by one degree.

Thanks to its variability, rear axle steering helps to resolve the conflict of objectives in terms of driving dynamics between agility and driving stability. The result not only offers advantages in terms of maneuvrability, driving safety and day-to-day usability, but also increases the maximum driving dynamics. Lap times on race tracks, for example, can be improved as a result.

The turning circle is reduced by approx. 19.6 inches (0.5 m) (see Figure 4_17_16) when the rear wheels are at the maximum steering angle (+2 degrees).

Design The rear axle steering system comprises two electromechanical actuators, which are installed instead of the conventional toe control arms on the axle and are synchronized electronically via a private CAN. The actuators consist of an electric motor, which drives a threaded spindle by means of a belt drive. The resulting linear movement permits a maximum rear axle steering adjustment angle of approx. +2 degrees or -1.5° on the 911 Carrera MY 2017. Front axle lift system

A lift system on the front axle is available as an option on the new 911 models for

4.5.2

TPM control unit (compact control unit)

The TPM control unit receives the radio signals from the wheel electronics, evaluates them and transmits the information to the instrument cluster, where the information can be displayed. It is equipped with an integrated antenna in order to receive the wireless signals.

The further the sensors are positioned away from the control unit, the lower the level of the transmitted signal.

Design The grey cast iron composite brake fitted to the front axle of the new 911 Carrera S models offers a further increase in braking power and features lightweight brake disc hubs made of aluminum. Braking power is increased above all by using larger brake discs, brake calipers and friction surfaces as well as by improved brake cooling.

A new feature is the use of brake discs with a modified screw connection between the brake disc hub and the brake disc friction ring.

Multi-collision brake

The multi-collision brake is a standard feature on the 911 Carrera MY 2017. If a collision is detected, braking is initiated automatically with a maximum braking deceleration force of 0.6g when the vehicle is traveling at a speed of more than approximately 6 mph (10 km/h).

Steering wheel

The design of the new sports steering wheel is based on that of the 918 Spyder steering wheel and in combination with optional Sport Chrono package, includes a mode switch for selecting the different driving modes directly on the steering wheel.

The GT sports steering wheel is available as an option. With a diameter of 360 mm,

the steering wheel is 15 mm smaller than the standard sports steering wheel.

It therefore ensures an even more direct steering feel.

In addition, the multi-function and heated steering wheel options are available for all steering wheels.

4.8.1

Sport Chrono package

The Sport Chrono package for the 911 Carrera MY 2017 has been modified significantly.

Design The various driving modes are now no longer selected using buttons on the center console, but instead via a rotary selector switch located in the redesigned steering wheel. This is the mode switch.

Individual mode is now available in addition to the three existing modes Normal, SPORT and SPORT PLUS. Function The settings for the PASM, sports exhaust system, auto start/stop function and rear spoiler can be combined individually based on Normal mode or SPORT modes via a corresponding menu in the instrument cluster.

The stored combination can be retrieved again the next time the vehicle is started by turning the mode switch.

With the Sport Chrono package, the standard SPORT button in the center console 4_58_16

PSM Sport

In conjunction with the Sport Chrono package, the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system on the new 911 models features a PSM Sport mode that can be activated separately.

Briefly pressing the PSM button in the center console (< 1 second) sets the PSM system to an extremely sporty mode.

In this mode, the driver can push closer to the limit range of the vehicle. However,

PSM Sport mode can be activated independently of the selected driving mode.

If the PSM button is pressed for longer than one second, “PSM off” becomes active.

Passive safety

Objective The passive safety of a vehicle includes all measures that are taken to minimize the consequences of an accident. Various types of high-strength, higher-strength and ultra-high-strength steel as well as aluminum components are used for this purpose on the 911 models from model year 2017.

These materials are used in such a way in the vehicle that the impact created during an accident is routed through the bodyshell via defined load paths. The objective is to prevent any deformation or even destruction of the passenger compartment.

Repair concepts

Thread repair There are five different repair sets designed specifically for the 911 series model year 2017 for performing thread repairs on die-cast aluminum components. A PorscheBody

specific threaded bush for repairs is used to integrate the belt fastening in the cast part at the rear end. A special insertion bushing is used for repairing aluminum ground pins.

The blind rivet nut manual device Gesipa/ Compact Booster ‟ Blindniettechnik, No. 125 is required to repair the aluminum ground pin.

On 16 April 1962, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche presented his original-sized model of the 911, which was still named the 901. His father Ferry and the rest of the

management team were enthusiastic. Nevertheless, at the time, scarcely anyone believed that the shape that stood in front of them would turn up again, more than 50 years later, almost unchanged, in the seventh generation of the Porsche 911.

On closer inspection, however, it soon becomes evident what makes the design of the 911 so unique. For Ferdinand Porsche, design was not an end in itself but a means to an end. For example, the muscular contours of the rear end are naturally derived from the fact that the engine of the vehicle is located in the rear end. Back then, the principle was as simple as it is today: form follows function. The vehicle’s engineering was to be its calling card. It is precisely this concentration on the fundamentals that provided the basis for the Porsche 911 becoming the design icon that it is today.

with the challenge of visually updating the Porsche 911 without destroying the iconic design. Luckily, Weissach is very skilled at enhancing the design that F. A. Porsche came up with in a way that is considerate of the design but at the same time is innovative in terms of details. We call it “evolutionary design”. And this is also once again clearly recognizable in the generation of the 911 launched for model year 2017.

The front view of the 911 models for model year 2017 has a new shape that is even more distinctive than that of the models from model years 2012 ‟ to 2016. With this

As usual, the 911 Carrera models have two single-tube tailpipes while the 911 Carrera S models are equipped with two twin tailpipes, which also visually

suggest the higher engine performance. Their design has only been slightly adapted in order not to risk their recognition value as typical Porsche Design elements.

An acoustic and, above all, visual highlight is the newly developed Sports exhaust system with its two, centrally arranged, slightly oval tailpipes. This is the first time this exhaust system has been used in a Porsche Turbo flat engine. It means that the Sports exhaust system is immediately recognizable as such and, from a purely visual point of view encourages the driver to press the relevant button to activate it.

The new 911 Carrera, like its predecessor, offers two-zone air conditioning, which continues to meet the highest demands in terms of comfort. The average power consumption of the refrigerant compressor has been reduced and the overall performance of the air conditioner improved. This leads to a faster air conditioning system response as well as a reduction in engine fuel consumption and emissions.

The control panel for the OAU (Operating and Air-conditioning Unit) has been adopted from the predecessor model. The functionality and the operating logic remain unchanged.

Magnetic clutch The magnetic clutch ensures that the A/C compressor can be fully switched off. The compressor then no longer causes drag torque. This improves engine responsiveness when torque is requested by the driver and reduces fuel consumption.

Design

Heating and air conditioning

The magnetic clutch of the electronically controlled compressor features an aluminium solenoid coil winding. This reduces the weight of the magnetic clutch and therefore of the complete A/C compressor. The required power consumption is also lower than would be the case with conventional copper windings. Due to the

optimized design of the magnetic clutch and its windings, a lighter belt pulley mount is possible. This results (in conjunction with the new torsional vibration damper) to smoother compressor running.

Network topology

with central gateway control unit, which is based on the 2007+ network architecture that Porsche introduced with the Panamera 2010. There are six CAN (Controller Area Network) data bus systems (each with a data transfer rate of 500 kbps) and one LIN (Local Interconnect Network, with a data transfer rate of 19.8 kbps) connected directly to the gateway. The Most 150 (Media Oriented System Transport with a data transfer rate of >100 Mbit/s) with its components (digital amplifier) is connected to the infotainment interface (PCM4). Changes to the network topology can be found in the Drive CAN, where the radiator shutter control (KJS1/KJS2) is connected by the DME via two LINs. Crash risks CAN include a private CAN for direct communication between the control units for the Lane Change Assist 3 (LCA).

Another new feature is the PCM private CAN, which connects the Display Control Unit (DCU) to the PCM.

In order to design an even more efficient vehicle electrical system/energy management system, a Denso generator with a higher rated output of 210A is used with the 3.0 l engine. The rated output of the previous version was 175A. The additional output is required to provide additional energy for the radiator fan motors. The internal circuitry of

Basic module The upper basic module (nearfield module) produces a wide, homogeneous, basic beam of light for illuminating the road and can be swivelled vertically. This module is fitted with two Lumileds (Philips). Two auxiliary high beam modules (left and right next to the basic module) increase the maximum range for the high beam function.

The system is active in a speed range from 19 to 155 mph (30 to 250 km/h). This feature can be activated and deactivated via the on-board computer in the instrument cluster (see sequence of illustrations on the next page).

Display concept This display information is provided in two stages: as long as the driver does not set the direction indicator, the light unobtrusively and subtly signals detected vehicles in the neighboring lanes. Lane Change Assist decides whether to display the vehicle based on the relative speed and distance. When the driver actuates the direction indicator, LEDs inform him of the detected vehicle by flashing brightly.

The LCA does not intervene in vehicle control and can be deactivated at any time by the driver via the multi-function display (Vehicle\Settings\Assist. systems\LCA).

When LCA is activated via the multi-function display, both LED modules in the exterior mirrors briefly light up to provide visual feedback that the system is active. The basic brightness of the LED modules (information display) can be adapted to the driver’s wishes in 3 brightness levels via a menu in the instrument cluster. The effective

Repair After replacing a control unit, e.g. removal of the rear apron, “re-calibration” is necessary (see Workshop Manual). Calibration is performed in the same manner as for the familiar systems, the measurement setup for calibration is described in the PIWIS Info System and can be carried out using the PIWIS Diagnostic Tester II. MOST 150 data bus

The previous MOST 25 data bus has been replaced by the MOST 150 data bus for the infotainment system. MOST stands for “Media Oriented System Transport”. This is a serial data bus system for transmitting audio, video, voice and data signals via an optical fiber.

The data is transmitted via three channels (reference, synchronous and asynchronous channel). The optical MOST150 data bus exchanges data between the relevant components in digital form. Data transmission using optical fibers enables a much higher data transfer rate. Light waves have extremely short wavelengths compared to radio waves. They do not generate electromagnetic interference waves and are also immune to interference from external electromagnetic influences.

9.8.8

Wireless Internet access – WiFi

handhelds, smartphones, tablet PCs or laptops can be connected to exchange data or gain secure access to the Internet. An additional SIM card in the vehicle is the preferred method for establishing a WiFi connection, which means that a vehicle with WiFi offers an on-board internet access point (hotspot). WiFi-compatible end devices can connect to this hotspot in the vehicle to utilize additional Porsche Connect Online Services.

Alternatively, the PCM4 can also connect to a hotspot operated from the smartphone as a WiFi client. However, the telephone module installed in the PCM4 and associated external antenna ensure a faster, more stable mobile connection.

The PCM 4 is equipped with 8 loudspeakers an integral amplifier with an output power of 150 watts as standard. The external analogue amplifier on the predecessor model has been omitted as a result of this output power.

With the optional BOSE® Surround Sound System, the customer receives 12 fully active loudspeakers incl. a 100 watt active subwoofer and center speaker integrated in the body. The amplifier produces 555 watts of power. The fully active system design enables the optimized adaptation of each individual speaker in the passenger compartment.

Burmester High-End Surround Sound System The optional Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System offers the greatest performance with a total output of 821 watts and 12 independently controlled speakers, including a 300 watt active subwoofer integrated in the body. Optimal analog and digital filters were defined for special installation positions. The tweeters are ribbonbased air motion transformers (AMT) offering unmistakably fine, clear and undistorted high-frequency sound reproduction with excellent level stability. All loudspeaker chassis are perfectly coordinated with each other and deliver a natural, richly textured spatial sound, even at high volumes.

The first time the iPhone is connected, the PCM queries whether the iPhone should only be used to play music like an iPod or whether Apple CarPlay® should be activated.

Once the device is connected, ticking the checkbox ensures that the PCM saves the selection as default. Simply select the relevant icon in the home menu on the PCM to use Apple CarPlay®. In addition to the touchscreen, Apple CarPlay® can also be operated using certain hardkeys as well as the rotary/pushbutton control. Above the voice control, pressing and holding the button on the steering wheel activates the Apple voice control “Siri”. Just like on the iPhone. This function can be used, for example, to send, read aloud and answer text messages. Mobile phones connected to the PCM via Bluetooth (BT) are automatically disconnected. In the meantime, an inserted SIM cannot be used to make phone calls.
