911 Targa 4/4S Foreword It all started with a dream. A dream about a Sports Car that combines the best of two worlds: the breathtaking open-top driving experience in a cabriolet and the everyday comfort and sporty driving pleasure of a coupé.

It is a dream that has always been with us. Since 1965.

The Name Choosing a name for the first open-top version of the 911 proved difficult at first.

The name had to convey the unique character of the new body shape and also had to be concise, easy to understand

and international. We quickly thought

about using a reference to well-known race tracks as a way of combining all these characteristics.

In the end, it was decided that the name

of the Sicilian hill climb race “Targa Florio” should adorn the rear end of the new

vehicle. But because “Florio” would not be understood internationally, we decided to leave out this part of the name and just

call the vehicle “Targa”. An added benefit of this name is that “Targa” in German

means “shield” - a happy coincidence that fits nicely with the concept of a “safety cabriolet”.

Since the introduction of the first 911 Targa in 1965, different roof concepts have been adopted. These concepts and their history are described briefly in the following pages.

911 Targa 4/4S 1965: The original Targa Open-top vehicles have always been an important cornerstone of the Porsche model range. When the 911 was developed, its percentage of turnover was around 17 percent. It was therefore clear that the first 911 should also be available as an open-top version.

Because of indications that cabriolets without roll-over protection would be banned on the US market - an important market for Porsche - a completely new safety concept had to be designed for cabriolets.

Porsche decided that the roll-over bar should be employed as standard. The Cabriolet design with fixed main bar, dividing the convertible top into a removable front and rear roof

The main reason for this decision was no longer the fear that open-top vehicles without improved safety features would be banned in the USA, but the design aspect. The roll-over bar had become a striking design element. The Targa therefore became the world’s first ever safety cabriolet and Porsche decided to use a black leatherette trim on the oneSpyder roof position

piece, removable front roof section. A quick-folding roof system, which could be stowed more easily, was also available as an extra. The rear roof section with a plastic window was zipped to the roll-over bar and could be folded down and lowered. This variable design meant that the original Targa offered a choice of four different roof positions: • Targa Hardtop with convertible top completely closed • Targa Spyder with convertible top completely open • Targa Voyage with quick-folding roof

The Targa was a success from day one and the main attraction at the International Motor Show (IAA) 1965 in Frankfurt because as reported in a press release at the time: “The Targa is neither a cabriolet nor a coupé, neither a hardtop nor a saloon, but something totally new.”

911 Targa 4/4S From 1968: the 911 Targa with heated glass rear window From model year 1968 onwards, a fixed, heated rear window made of glass could be ordered instead of the zip-down plastic rear window. This became necessary because otherwise the Targa could only have been licensed as a pure two-seater in the USA due to safety legislation there. The version with the fixed glass rear window became increasingly

Unlike the version with the folding plastic window, it was then no longer possible to lower the rear roof section. However, the front roof section could still be removed. Increasing numbers of 911 buyers then opted for the Targa and in the early 70s, this body type accounted for approximately 40 percent of the total production volume at Porsche.

911 Targa 4/4S From 1973: the 911 Targa G model By switching to the Porsche 911 G model, which was available from 1973, Porsche planned to replace the removable soft top with a fixed aluminum roof, but this was met with little enthusiasm from Targa customers. As a result, in April 1974, the familiar soft top, which was only available at an extra charge for the G model Targa since its introduction in August 1973, was again available as standard equipment. From 1975, the safety bar on the Carrera Targa was changed from silver to black - a change that was adopted on Targa G model

all 911 Targa models from model year 1979. From early 1987, the 911 top model, the 911 Turbo, was also available as a Targa model and, like the 911 Turbo Coupé, continued to be available with a 4-speed transmission up to April 1988.

A unique vehicle was built as a Targa based on the extremely sporty 911 Carrera

911 was presented for the first time in Geneva. This roof type became increasingly popular in subsequent years, particularly with the introduction of fully automated roof operation from model year 1985, giving the 911 Targa models the scope and freedom for further development of the concept. The objective was to develop future 911 Targa models that offer even better day-to-day comfort with the same excellent open-top driving experience.

From 1989: the 911 Targa (964) The introduction of the Porsche 911 (964) in 1989 heralded the arrival of the first ever 911 Targa with all-wheel drive. At the same time, the 911 Targa (964) was the last 911 Targa to feature the conventional removable Targa roof with safety bar and glass rear window. The successor models 911 Targa (993) were only available with the Panoramic glass roof.

911 Targa 4/4S From 1995: the 911 Targa (993) with Panoramic glass roof The arrival of the 911 Targa (993) saw Porsche moving away from the transverse roll-over bar and introducing a new roof concept for the Targa. Instead of a single roll-over bar, it now featured two longitudinal safety structures, extending from the windshield to the rear end and forming a frame around two electrically operated glass elements at the front.

These flooded the passenger compartment with light when the roof was closed. The glass element disappeared under the rear window when the roof was open. An air deflector was

911 Targa 4/4S 2014: The new 911 Targa (991) With the roof concept of the new 911 Targa 4/4S (991), Porsche bridges the gap to the original Targa model from 1965 and proves once again that tradition and innovation can be perfectly combined. At the press of a button, the fully automatic roof system spectacularly stows the convertible top behind the rear seat system.

A transverse strut in front of the convertible top compartment integrates this into the interior in a visually perfect way. The curved rear window made of laminated safety glass can be heated and allows plenty of light into the vehicle. It also permits exceptional allround visibility. The fixed Targa bar features an aluminum trim and provides roll-over

The existing 911 Cabriolet (991) body was used as the basis for developing the new 911 Targa 4/4S (991). The body front section, floorpan assembly and rear end were adopted virtually unchanged, as they already provide sufficient stability and rigidity for the Targa body. One main feature of the 911 Targa 4/4S (991) is the B-pillar, which is featured as a bar and gives the vehicle its unique design.

5.2 Bodyshell The 911 Targa 4/4S (991) bodyshell is based on the body of the 911 Carrera 4/S (991) Cabriolet.

Changes were only required in the following areas: • Body front section: Upper cowl panel frame • Floorpan assembly: B-pillar, cross member, filler plate • Rear end: Channel reinforcement, side panel The same joining techniques are used in production. This means that the familiar flowdrill screws, high-strength blind rivets, MAG welding, spot welding and two-component

The objective in designing the bodyshell for the 911 Targa 4/4S (991) was to implement the classic Targa bar used in the bodyshell of the existing 911 (991) models. Since the bar is an integral part of the bodyshell structure, additional measures had to be taken to meet the high demands placed on a body in terms of crash safety or torsional rigidity, for example. As a result, the bar on the 911 Targa 4/4S (991) is designed as a

The 911 Targa 4/4S (991) models have the same body as that used for the 911 (991) models in an aluminum/steel composite design. The idea behind this intelligent lightweight construction concept is use of “the right material in the right place”.

Meaning: • Extensive use of aluminum to reduce the vehicle weight • Use of ultra-high-strength steel for greater body rigidity and optimum occupant protection.

Repairs The repair concept for the body front section is the same as for the 911 (991) models.

This means that in the event of structural damage in certain areas of the front end that exceed the specified tolerance of +/- 2 mm, the entire body front section must be replaced.

no longer features a tension bow. On the 911 Cabriolet (991), this is attached to the bracket using two tension ropes to guarantee the correct tensioning of the convertible top covering.

The bottom half of the cowl panel frame and the sun visor holders have been adopted from the 911 (991) models. The air deflector holders are new parts of the cowl panel frame assembly. The top half of the cowl panel frame is also designed as the cut part of the 911 Cabriolet (991). The familiar micro-alloyed, high-strength steels are also used here.

On the inner side section, the front section and the side panel holder has been changed to accommodate the B-pillar. The inner channel reinforcement is designed as a cut part from the 911 Cabriolet (991) and has an additional support. The outer channel reinforcement consists of a cut part and a newly developed sealing channel. The outer B-pillar has also been completely redesigned and, like the channel reinforcement, is made of ultra-high-strength steel.

Repairs In the event of repairs, both the roof cross member and the roof filler plate are available as spare parts. The components can be replaced completely during repairs and can be joined to the bodyshell using the specified joining techniques.

The doors and front lid could be adopted from the 911 (991) models. So only the rear lid and the curved glass window have been newly developed.

Convertible-top compartment lid To achieve the classic Targa design, the convertible-top compartment lid had to be designed in such a way that the curved rear window could be integrated.

The curved rear window is screwed to the lid via a frame. The frame is made of aluminum alloy and is painted black. The rear window is bonded to the frame.

In the event of repairs, the complete rear window and frame must be replaced. The convertible-top compartment lid is available as an electrophoretic dip-primed (e-coated) spare part during repairs. The trim between the rear window and lid is attached to the lid. This can be adjusted to the trim on the side panel (at the same height as the Targa bar) using two grub screws.

Function When the Targa roof is opened, the complete lid moves back, releasing the convertible top compartment. The lid can also be opened separately in order to fill up engine oil and coolant using the rear lid switch on the left door entry guard (service position). Because the lid projects beyond the rear of the vehicle, the rear ParkAssist is activated when the Targa roof is opened. If the sensors detect an obstacle at a distance of 16 inches (40 cm) or less, a warning message appears on the multifunction display..

The hinges for the convertible-top compartment lid have been completely redesigned.

The forces acting on the hinges are significantly higher than on the 911 Cabriolet (991) due to kinematics and the design of the Targa roof system. In addition, the convertibletop compartment lid and rear window have a gross weight of just under 55 lbs (25 kg).

Design In contrast to the 911 Cabriolet (991), the hinges are made entirely of steel. The control arms are designed as cast parts, while the base plates are made of welded sheet steel.

On the bodyshell side, the hinge is screwed to the body at three points, while it is joined to the convertible-top compartment lid using three threaded bolts (on the lid side). The height of the hinge can be adjusted at the bodyshell side, while the hinge can be adjusted forward/back and to the left/right on the lid side.

5.4 Repair concepts Objective Increasingly stringent safety requirements demand that materials with the highest strength characteristics are used in the 911 Targa 4/4S (991). These ultra-high-strength steels are used for safety components such as A and B-pillars and door sills. These materials pose new challenges for body repairs because their extremely high strength significantly impairs their reshapability, weldability and machinability. In principle, such

Special precautions must be taken due to the risk of contact corrosion of aluminum body parts. Grinding dust from the steel parts and particularly sparks produced by cutting or welding work must not be allowed to come into contact with aluminum parts. This also applies to painted aluminum parts. The paint may be damaged by red-hot steel parts and the steel particles may come into contact with the aluminum body part, which entire body must be protected when performing steel repairs. This is done by using the required cover tarpaulins and masking. Cutting work must be performed only as machining operations with the body saw. Where grinding work is unavoidable, grinding discs must be used that produce either no or only minimum sparks. When performing welding work, a spot welder must be used where possible, since this produces less weld spatter during the welding process.

Joining techniques Objective Both aluminum and steel body parts can be damaged in the event of side or front-end damage. After removing the damaged parts, the new genuine parts must be fitted in accordance with the specified repair procedures. Extreme care must be taken when joining steel and aluminum components in order to prevent subsequent contact corrosion.

Two-component body adhesive and high-strength rivets or flow-drill screws are used in the joint areas. This creates an insulating layer between the two materials, as in series production, and prevents contact corrosion. Always cover and mask the aluminum parts when welding steel body parts.

Function An optimum repair quality and the restoration of the entire body structure with all its functions, such as crash safety, can only be achieved by taking particular care when carrying out the repair processes. This includes not only the actual repair work to the damaged areas, but in particular, making sure that the repair areas are prepared properly.

Bonding Objective In addition to mechanical joining techniques, such as self-piercing riveted, clinched joints and flow drilled screw connections, and thermal techniques, such as resistance spot

welds, adhesive bonding using Sikapower 498 and Elastosol M83 is also used in defined areas. These adhesives are dependent on temperature to attain their final strength.

Higher-strength and ultra-high-strength components may be replaced only as complete parts. Partial replacement is not permitted for safety reasons. Here too, any straightening is only possible to a limited extent, as these components are too rigid and adjacent areas may be damaged. Resistance spot welding can only be carried out reliably using inverter welding equipment currently approved by Porsche AG, as otherwise the strength of the body may be compromised and result in consequential damage. A visual assessment of the welding quality is not possible in this instance.

Flow-drill screws Objective Different materials can be joined using automated direct screw connections, even in the case of one-sided access.

Function A special, coated screw is driven under high contact pressure through a bore in the outer part to be joined. The inner part is not predrilled during production. Due to the pressure and the rotational speed, the material is softened, a thread is formed and the

with new screws. If the thread is damaged, oversize screws are available (M6 instead of M5). It may be necessary to predrill during repairs.

Repair procedures Objective One of the challenges during the development of the body and the resultant repair procedures to be used on the current 911 (991) models, including the Targa, was connecting the floorpan assembly, which is made from aluminum components wherever possible, to the steel assemblies of the body. Thermal joining processes are not possible for this, since they do not permit production of a joint that offers appropriate static and dynamic strength and also excludes the possibility of contact corrosion.

This is ensured by joining the components by means of the non-thermal processes adhesive bonding. The basis for corrosion protection at corrosion-susceptible aluminum/steel joints is provided by the use of adhesive bonds on the unpainted bodyshell of the 911 (991) models. These adhesive bonds provide large-area insulation of the aluminum/steel components, thereby preventing corrosion at the contact point. As a further measure, all aluminum/steel joints are either sealed with PVC or preserved with wax on a case-by-case basis after e-coat.

Section repairs Objective The objective of the development of section repairs is to reduce the required repair work. So if a component is damaged, only the areas that are actually affected will be repaired or replaced. The techniques described earlier can be used here to carry out appropriate and lasting repairs.

Function Certain conditions must be met in order to be able to repair damaged areas. For example, all separating cuts must be performed in accordance with the instructions in the corresponding Workshop Manual. Body reinforcements can be separated or joined together only if this is specified in the method descriptions. Otherwise, a damaged reinforcement must always be replaced with a new one.

Repair specifications Objective Because the body is the most safety-critical assembly in a vehicle, it is essential that the repair specifications developed by Porsche AG are always adhered to. These are designed to ensure that the structure of the vehicle is restored to its original state after it has been damaged, thereby meeting the required high standards.

The rear end adds the finishing touch to the clear lines with the unmistakably dynamic tail end of the 911 Carrera (991) all-wheel drive models. It is 44 mm wider than on the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera (991) models. The active tail-light panel visually joins the narrow LED tail lights. The tail-light panel with integrated parking and rear light functions creates a unique, very distinctive night design. The lower part of the rear end is finished off with the stainless steel tailpipes. These are designed as single tailpipes on the 911 Targa 4 (991), while the 911 Targa 4S (991) features two twin-branch tailpipes as standard.

Add-on parts All add-on parts, except for the convertible-top compartment lid and Panoramic rear window and bar panels, were adopted from the 911 (991) models.

Aerodynamics In contrast to the 911 Cabriolet (991), the drag coefficient has been improved from 0.31 to 0.30 thanks to the curved Panoramic rear window. The rear spoiler was adopted from the 911 Cabriolet (991).

The following basic requirements had to be met in developing the 911 Targa 4/4S (991) roof concept: • In contrast to the original Targa, it had to be possible to open the roof without getting out of the vehicle.

• The roof sections had to be stowed inside the vehicle to guarantee protection against the weather at all times while driving.

• The four seats and the luggage compartment volume had to be retained if possible while driving both with the top up and down.

• The styling and function of the original roll-over bar had to be integrated in the new

• The characteristic Panoramic rear window had to be heated and had to incorporate the new electronic antenna functions in addition to providing a good all-round view.

The basic concept for this fully automatic process is that the roof system is divided into three main components that move with a defined kinematic interdependence.

The three main components are: 1 The convertible top.

2 The Targa bar with bar trim panels.

3 The convertible top compartment lid

Convertible top The convertible top is designed according to the Z-fold concept: The front roof frame remains in its horizontal position and folds onto the rear roof strut. When stowed behind the rear seats, the convertible top is located in the Targa-specific trim panels without obstructing the rear view. The convertible top and the convertible top compartment lid are powered by the hydraulic unit familiar from the 911 Cabriolet (991). The latching hook and centering journal were also adopted.

Design The convertible top covering is made from the same material as the convertible top on the 911 Cabriolet (991) and has a thickness of 1.1 millimeters and a flame-treated surface. Underneath, the convertible top has full-area insulation (Thinsulate) that offers both thermal and aeroacoustic protection, and prevents the hard frame components from marking the convertible top covering.

Function The covering and insulation are connected kinematically via the convertible top frame, which keeps them in their defined position both when the convertible top is closed or opened and are controlled kinematically during the movement sequence. When the convertible top is closed, the roof elements are not fixed to one another. The convertible top covering is permanently connected to the front roof element, folds into a defined position in the rear when stowed and is attached securely to the rear edge of the rear roof strut.

Similar to the classic models, the roll-over protection comes in the form of a roll-over bar in steel monocoque design mounted to the body, which was integrated in the body of the 911 C4 Cabriolet (991) as Targa-specific equipment and forms the basic element of the Targa bar. Design The Targa bar consists of five visual elements (see Fig. 6_25_15), which are manufactured using the aluminum die-casting process. On the one hand, this material concept allows the integration of different functions such as the mounting for the water management system and connection points, while on the other hand, it allows the creation of a precision geometry, including narrow joints (2 +/-0.8 mm (side panel to panel flap), 3 +/-0.8 mm (panel flap to center panel)), radii or even the shape of the vents. The main component inside the Targa bar is the module carrier, to which the panel flaps and side/central bar panels are attached. The carrier is completed by a center panel mounted between the two side submodules.

The third main component of the innovative roof system is the rear lid. It consists of a Targa-specific convertible top compartment lid manufactured in an aluminum monocoque design and connected to the body via two steel hinges. The heated Panoramic rear window is mounted on the convertible top compartment lid. The convertible top compartment lid and the convertible top are actuated together via the central hydraulic unit.

Repairs The lid shell is available as a cathodic dip-coated spare part. All components mounted on the shell can be replaced individually.

Panoramic rear window Objective One special feature of the 911 Targa 4/4S (991) is the large, classic curved Panoramic rear window, which moves back when the convertible top and the convertible top compartment lid open together. The rear window is mounted on a window frame screwed to the lid shell. It is available in the standard version. The rear window wiper is also available as an optional extra.

Country-specific differences Similar to other vehicle projects, the rear window is available in two country-specific variants. The reason is that some vehicles are fitted with the SDARS (Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service) antenna for markets where satellite radio is used.

The rear window is manufactured from a partially pre-tensioned laminated safety glass and includes a tungsten wire rear window heating system. The virtually invisible tungsten wire heating system ensures an undistorted view to the rear of the vehicle. The wire is sealed in film 0.76 millimeters thick and sandwiched between two sheets of glass 2.1 millimeters thick.

The two panes are curved individually into their characteristic shape in a press-bending tool at approximately 1148° F (620° C). A defined cooling process partially pre-tensions the panes to make them extremely durable. The film is placed between the two panes and the air is evacuated. The window is then processed in an autoclave at high temperatures and pressure for approximately 4 hours.

Repairs It is not possible to adjust the Panoramic rear window in the lid shell. The rear window frame is fitted with two centering journals that position the window in a front/rear and left/right direction. The sealing surface determines the height. Design The window frame consists of a composite of extruded profile, cast joints and deepdrawn sheets made from aluminum. It has to meet different requirements for mounting the trim parts and the molding as well as the formation of the sealing contact surface in the area of the Targa bar. The window frame is also used for pre-assembling the Panoramic rear window, which is then mounted on the convertible top compartment lid.

Design The air deflector consists of several components. The support rail screwed to the vehicle and control arms are manufactured from aluminum alloy, while the air deflector lip is made from plastic. The air deflector is connected to the bodyshell via four screw points.

Function The manually operated air deflector adopts two positions. When the convertible top opens, the deflector moves to the raised end position, where it is retained by a tension spring installed on the support rail. In order to move the air deflector to the lower position, it must be pushed downwards on the left side at the point indicated by the arrow printed on the air deflector lip. A pin attached to the control arm moves through a gate

1 Drain openings The Targa bar incorporates two water drains that lead into a drain hose with a drain opening located in the lower section of the rear wheel housings. The drain openings are bolted to the four corners of the center bar trim panel.

Function The sealing concept and water drains were essentially designed to direct water through the roof system and the bodyshell along a defined route to the outlet openings. Furthermore, the seals also prevent wind noise and compensate for tolerances.

Maintenance-related considerations As on all models with a convertible top, it is recommended that the water drains are

cleaned during every workshop visit, otherwise leaves or other objects may block the drains. Lubrication instructions for the seals are also included in the maintenance schedule.

Repairs The seal surrounding the center trim panel can be replaced when the panel is removed from the vehicle. The seals on the side trim panel and trim panel flaps are also designed to be replaced in one piece. The seal for the front roof strut was adopted from the 911 Cabriolet (991).

The hydraulic cylinders had to be adapted to the forces generated when the lid moves and the operating pressure of the hydraulic unit had to be increased from 2030 psi (140 bar) to approximately 2175 psi (150 bar) at the pressure control valve due to the greater weight of the convertible top compartment lid, including the Panoramic rear window.

Design The supply tank and control block were adopted from the 911 Cabriolet (991) and adapted to the Targa-specific requirements.

Function When the control switch in the center console is actuated, pressure builds up in the hydraulic unit and is transferred to the hydraulic cylinders. In contrast to the 911 Cabriolet (991), the pressure produced at the pressure relief valve is approximately 2175 psi (150 bar).

Maintenance-related considerations The drive unit does not require maintenance but the hydraulic oil level must be checked when the hydraulic cylinders are replaced and the oil topped up if necessary. A marking in the form of a plus symbol (+) is provided on the hydraulic oil tank to determine the oil level. The marking must be covered when the convertible top is closed.

Hydraulic cylinders The convertible top compartment lid and convertible top are each actuated by two hydraulic cylinders. The hydraulic cylinders for the convertible top compartment lid have been reinforced in order to move the weight of the lid together with the mounted Panoramic rear window.

As on the 911 Cabriolet (991), two Hall-effect sensors are mounted on each of the hydraulic cylinders for the convertible top compartment lid.

Function The “convertible top compartment lid closed” position is retrieved from both cylinders and the “convertible top compartment lid open” position is retrieved from the left cylinder only. The centrally positioned sensor on the right cylinder has no function. It was originally designed for an intermediate position that was never implemented.

Repairs The hydraulic cylinders can be replaced individually. The cylinders are available complete with hydraulic lines. The Hall-effect sensors are attached to the cylinders and can be replaced individually in the event of repairs.

Targa roof system control The Targa roof system control ensures that the different components can move relative to one another at defined intervals. In addition to the actual drive unit, it also controls additional sensors and switches that monitor these processes.

All sensors and actuators can be diagnosed using the PIWIS Tester. As a result, • all ACTUAL values from the Hall-effect sensors (“Hall-effect sensor covered”, “Halleffect sensor uncovered”), • the microswitch for the catch (“microswitch actuated”, “microswitch not actuated”) and • in the hook bracket (“microswitch actuated”, “microswitch not actuated”) can be read out. Signals from the Reed sensor and the rotation-angle sensors can also be displayed on the Tester.

911 Targa 4/4S Emergency unlocking In the event of failure of the convertible top drive system, the top can also be closed manually. The following extract from the Owner’s Manual explains the procedure.

Design In order to perform the emergency release, the drive for the convertible top and the convertible top compartment lid must be depressurized using the emergency release key attached to the rear wall behind the back seats. In addition, release cables for unlocking the convertible top compartment lid were also installed in the vehicle.

Function 1 Remove the rear-wall lining (Fig. 6_48_15) • Fold seat backs forward. upwards.

2 Depressurize the roof drive unit (Fig. 6_49_15) • Using the hexagon on the emergency operation key (B), turn the emergency hand screw (C) approximately 120° counter-clockwise.

• Remove the emergency operation key.

3 Unlock the glass lid (Fig. 6_50_15) • Use the emergency operation key to pull both release loops (D) forwards approximately 4 inches (10 cm) one after the other.

4 Open the glass lid (Fig. 6_51_15) • Hold the glass rear lid by the air grille, lift the lid and then pull back to the end position.

5 Remove cover (Fig. 6_52_15) • Release the cover (E) on the underside and lift up to remove.

6 Lock the air deflector (Fig. 6_53_15) • Press the air deflector down to the end position at the marking (F).

7 Close the convertible top element (Fig. 6_54_15) • Hold the front edge of the convertible top element, then guide forwards and up over the Targa bar.

8 Open the latching hook (Fig. 6_55_15) • When the convertible top is positioned centrally, remove the screw plug and unscrew the latching hook through the roof opening (B) using the emergency operation key.

9 Close the convertible top fully (Fig. 6_56_15) • In order to close the convertible top element completely, keep turning emergency operation key (B) in a clockwise direction until the latching hook engages fully in the locking point (resistance can be clearly felt).

10 Close the convertible top compartment lid (Fig. 6_57_15) • Push the lid forwards and move to the end position.

Passive safety systems The safety concept was adopted from the 911 Cabriolet (991). Instead of the active rollover protection fitted to the Cabriolet, the 911 Targa 4/4S (991) was equipped with a roll-over bar secured to the bodyshell to protect the occupants in the event of the vehicle rolling over. The airbags installed in the passenger compartment were also adopted.

Operating concept The operating concept is essentially the same as that of the 911 Cabriolet (991) model.

The roof cannot be actuated when the vehicle is in motion.

Objective The objective was to integrate a convertible top compartment in the area behind the back seats. New trim parts and a storage concept were developed because the available installation space was defined by the bodyshell.

Country-specific differences In all countries except the USA, the roof can also be operated remotely using the ignition key.

Function The roof system can be opened or closed using the switch mounted on the center console. Before the roof moves, the reversing sensors measure the distance to the nearest obstacle behind the vehicle. If the sensors detect an obstacle at a distance of 16 inches ing display on the instrument cluster indicates that the convertible top is not opened/ closed fully.
