• The enhanced Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with map-controlled, fully variable multi-plate clutch enables even faster and more precise distribution of the propulsion forces.

• The fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 16% compared with the previous model.

• The new 911 Carrera 4 models are up to 143 lbs (65 kg) lighter than the previous models thanks to the use of intelligent lightweight construction.

• The adaptive cruise control with Porsche Active Safe (PAS) extends the range of driver assistance systems.

• Greatly enhanced performance combined with reduced fuel consumption.

911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet

The new 911 Carrera 4 models use the flat-six engines familiar from the 911 Carrera models with significantly higher performance figures compared with the previous model.

The power output of the new 3.4-liter flat engine has been increased by 5 hp to 350 hp (254 kW) despite a 0.2-liter reduction in displacement. The power output of the new 3.8-liter engine has been increased by 15 hp to 400 hp (297 kW) and the torque has been increased by 15 ft lb (20 Nm) to 325 ft lb (440 Nm). At the same time, the fuel consumption of the new 911 Carrera 4 models has been reduced by up to 16%.

2.1 General The 911 Carrera 4 models also use the enhanced engine generation with DFI (direct fuel injection). The fuel consumption compared with the previous models has been significantly reduced for both the 3.4-liter and 3.8 liter engines by improving efficiency and using the latest engine technology.

2.2 Fuel tank The fuel tank volume has been increased by 1.06 gal. (4 liters) to 18 gal. (68 liters).

2.3 Electric fuel pump Control unit for electric fuel pump On the Carrera 4, continuous activation of the electric fuel pump takes place via a separate control unit installed under the battery tray. The DME control unit sends a PWM signal to the control unit to control the speed of the electric fuel pump and thus the required delivery rate.

The control unit is supplied with power via a fuse. Terminal 31 ensures the

connection to vehicle ground. 3-phase voltage goes from the control unit to the variable-speed fuel pump.

The pump motor is a 3-phase synchronous motor without position feedback and without sensor. The speed of the fuel pump and the delivery rate is controlled by the frequency of the applied signal. To prevent an overload of the pump motor, the phase current in the three lines is limited by the control unit.

The electric fuel pump is activated when opening the driver’s door, when switching on the ignition, when starting and during driving.

The speed and therefore the delivery rate of the electric fuel pump are controlled by the PWM signal from the DME control unit as a function of the fuel requirement. The current consumption can be measured at the fuse of the electric fuel pump and is between approx. 5 and 15 amps.

The intake air flowing in the intake manifold has kinetic energy. The opening and

closing of the intake valve trigger a returning pressure wave. The intake air flow backs at the speed of sound and meets the static air at the open end of the intake manifold. Here, the pressure wave is reflected again and returns to the intake valve.

If the returning pressure wave reaches the intake valve while it is open, this improves cylinder charging. A supercharging effect is produced. The frequency of the vibrations produced depends on the intake manifold length, intake manifold cross-section and engine speed.

Tuning flap, intake manifold flaps To fully exploit the vibrations and resonances, both the tuning flap and the intake manifold flaps are closed in the lower rpm range. The tuning flap is opened first at approx. 4,200 rpm. This produces a supercharging effect (through the vibrating air columns) from one cylinder bank to the other, which brings about a significant increase in the torque. The intake volume is additionally increased above approx.

6,300 rpm by opening the intake manifold flaps, which in turn provides an advantage in terms of power development.

The illustration above shows a comparison of the power and torque curves; the dashed curves represent the engine without power kit. This comparison clearly shows that the torque curve is more harmonic and that the drop in the upper rpm range is not as great as on the standard engine.

The power curve is significantly higher than that of the engine without power kit.

3.1 Transmission General The 911 Carrera 4 variants are equipped with the 7-speed manual transmission as

3.2 Intermediate throttle application during deceleration downshifts The 911 Carrera 4 models, model year 2013, use an intermediate throttle application function for the first time in conjunction with a manual transmission. The intermediate throttle application, which is controlled electronically via the electronic

throttle, allows the engine to rev up to the speed of the lower engaged gear with maximum agility and precision. This produces a sporty sound in the passenger compartment.

Function The speed of the input shaft is detected via the sensor (1) on the transmission, while the speed of the transmission output shaft is determined based on the vehicle speed. The gear ratio and therefore the engaged gear are calculated in the DME control unit based on the ratio of the two speeds.

If a gear change is initiated at this point, the relevant gear is speeded up or slowed down during the synchronization process (clutch is depressed). The resulting change in engine speed indicates whether an upshift or downshift is taking place.

The intermediate throttle application function is activated during downshifting. The increase in engine speed is dependent on whether the SPORT or SPORT PLUS button is activated.

The advantages of this function are as follows: • More comfortable gear changes; no vibrations are produced in the drivetrain during clutch engagement.

• The throttle applications provide the driver with immediate feedback regarding the downshift.

• No deceleration torque at the rear axle during clutch engagement. The oversteering tendency during extreme driving manoeuvres (e.g. on low grip surfaces) is greatly reduced.

• Clutch wear is reduced.

• The gear indicator in the instrument cluster responds much faster and is always active.

3.3 Porsche Traction Management General As on the previous models, the Carrera 4 uses the intelligent Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel control for active control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics as standard. PTM enables optimum use of the high power output of the new 911 Carrera 4. The system provides increased driving stability, traction or more agile handling, depending on the driving situation. As a result, the vehicle is very agile on narrow country roads, offers exceptional traction and provides a high level of driving safety at high speeds, even when performing extreme driving manoeuvres.

Porsche Traction Management is made up of the following systems: • Permanent all-wheel drive with electronically controlled center-differential lock for torque distribution between the front and rear axles • Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) for traction control • Anti Slip Regulation (ASR) for slip control during acceleration and improved driving stability

PTM can optionally be supplemented by a mechanical rear differential lock.

PTM control The intelligent all-wheel control used in the 911 Carrera 4 actively controls drive torque distribution between the front and rear axles as appropriate to the current driving situation and the wishes of the driver. The PTM control unit evaluates the various input variables such as the wheel speeds of all four wheels, lateral acceleration, longitudinal acceleration and steering angle. The aim of this torque distribution is to provide the driver with excellent driving dynamics and traction while ensuring maximum driving safety at all times.

In the PTM control unit, several function processes are tested at once, then evaluated and summarized in a control strategy. This strategy determines the

The PTM incorporates the following basic functions:

Basic torque distribution The engine torque is continuously distributed between the front and rear axles as appropriate to the driving situation.

Derivative-action control If a driveaway situation is detected and rear-wheel slip assumed on the basis of various input variables such as accelerator pedal position and change duration, the PTM clutch is already closed to such an extent that wheel spin is prevented as far as possible. This means that the maximum possible drive power is applied to all four wheels when driving away, therefore ensuring the best possible acceleration.

The front-axle housing is divided into two different oil chambers. The front area accommodates the front-axle differential, which is filled with hypoid oil. The rear area accommodates the clutch chamber with the PTM clutch, which is filled with special ATF. Information on the oil types and oil quantity is provided in the list of approved oils.

There is a heat exchanger (2) between the two oil chambers. If the multi-plate clutch has to compensate for different wheel speeds, on loose ground for example, the oil in the clutch chamber becomes warmer than the oil in the differential chamber, and the oil in the clutch chamber is therefore cooled by the oil in the differential chamber.

When the solenoid (5) is actuated, the active pick-up plate (8) is pulled towards the primary clutch (7), thereby generating a torque in the clutch. The support element (4) provides the necessary support. The pick-up plate (8) is referred to as “active” because it simultaneously functions as a friction plate, which has the advantage that

more torque can be transferred.

When a torque is generated in the primary clutch (7), the ball ramp (3) turns, thereby actuating the main clutch and producing a controlled frictional connection between the input shaft (6) and output shaft (1). The advantage of this arrangement of primary clutch (which is controlled) and main clutch (which transfers the torque) is that the primary clutch is operated with a small current and only a small force is necessary in order to operate a large clutch capable of transferring a large force.

For this reason, the reaction time of this system is also very short.

This system can be compared with a working relay which switches a high working

Lubrication An oil pump (2) is driven by the splines of the output shaft. This oil pump supplies the plate assemblies with lubricating oil. The oil is drawn in through the oil suction snorkel in the oil sump and are supplied from there to the hollow output shaft.

The output shaft is provided with cross bores to permit targeted lubrication.

A temperature sensor (arrow) is screwed into the housing and measures the oil sump temperature directly so that the oil temperature in the clutch housing can be communicated to the PTM control unit. If the oil temperature reaches a critical level, various measures are implemented in different stages in order to prevent clutch overheating.

Rear differential locks A mechanical differential lock is optionally available for the vehicles with manual transmission in combination with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV). The locking value is 22% (acceleration) and 27% (deceleration).

Vehicles with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) can optionally be equipped with PTV Plus, in which case the transmission has a controlled rear differential lock with a locking factor from 0 to 100%.

Diagnosis The PTM control unit has diagnostic capabilities and can be read out with the PIWIS Tester.

4.1 General The chassis has basically been carried over from the rear-wheel drive version, but has been adapted to the wider body as well as the specific requirements of the

Chassis variants Different chassis variants are available for the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S models: • In addition to the standard chassis, there are two other variants available for the 911 Carrera 4: the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) variable damper system with chassis lowered by approx. 10 mm as well as the PASM sports chassis with chassis lowered by approx. 20 mm and mechanical/electronic rear differential lock.

• The 911 Carrera 4S is equipped with the PASM chassis as standard and available with the PASM sports chassis as an option.

This assistance is provided in a number of stages.

Latent warning (visual) If the distance from the vehicle in front is too close for a lengthy time, a latent warning (early warning) appears on the multi-function display to warn the driver.

At the same time, the system increases braking readiness in order to shorten the stopping distance if necessary. The brake system is pre-filled in order to bridge the air gaps if it is detected that the vehicle is coming critically close to a moving obstacle.

Advance warning shortly afterwards by an advance warning. This consists of a visual and acoustic warning signal accompanied by a short build-up in brake pressure. This produces a braking jolt, which draws the driver’s attention to the traffic. The driver can prevent a collision by responding appropriately in this dangerous situation.

Acute warning If the driver does not respond with appropriate application of the brakes, the system amplifies the brake pressure as appropriate to the situation within the technological limits, right up to full braking (target braking).

Note: The latent warning and prewarning functions are switched off by default. The acute warning function is active. Latent warnings and prewarnings can be activated under “Prewarning on”.

Porsche Active Safe is only active at speeds above 19 mph (30 km/h).

5.2 Bodyshell Weight distribution Just under 50% of the entire body weight of both the Coupé and Cabriolet is made from aluminum, which has been a significant contributing factor in reducing the vehicle weight. The illustration below shows which components are made from which materials.

5.4 Slide/tilt roof General As on the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera models, the 911 Carrera 4 models also use the externally guided slide/tilt roof. This means that in contrast to the previous models, on which the sliding roof moved into the body between the outer skin and roof liner, it now opens by sliding over the outer skin. This has two advantages: First, the opening area is increased by approx. 30%. And secondly, there are no headroom restrictions as the roof lining no longer has to be lowered to make room for the slide/tilt roof when this option is selected. The net-type wind deflector provides optimum wind protection and comfort. It retracts in several stages,

(200 km/h) and closed up to the top speed. As well as the full roof variant, the slide/tilt roof also comes in aluminum and glass designs.

6.2 Front and side view Front apron The 911 Carrera 4 models boast an impressive front view thanks to a modified front apron with side air intake grilles in a unique design. They underline the sporty line and uniqueness of the 911 Carrera models. The optional parking sensors integrate inconspicuously into the front. They are barely perceptible in the front apron and the side intake grilles. The 911 Carrera models also feature the ACC function familiar from the Panamera and Cayenne models for the first time, with the

The side view of the 911 Carrera 4 models is dominated by the contrasting black sill covers. As well as providing a further point of differentiation from the side view of the rear-wheel drive versions, they also lend the vehicles an appearance of lightness.

6.3 Rear view The 911 Carrera 4 models exude superiority thanks to the larger dimensions in the rear area. The rear tyres are 10 mm wider as standard than on the rear-wheel drive models. In combination with the body widened by 44 mm in the rear area, a harmonious and attractive overall appearance is created.

Although it may look like a conventional fabric top from the outside, the current Cabriolet actually features a “soft top with top bows”. This top design combines the advantages of a fabric top with respect to opening and storage with the noise and heat insulation benefits of a hard top.

Operating concept As on the rear-wheel drive models, the top is operated by way of two one-way switches in the area of the center console, one each for opening and closing, or optionally by way of the vehicle key. A corresponding display with information text is

When the road ahead is clear, the adaptive cruise control (ACC) behaves like the conventional cruise control function and maintains the selected target speed.

The difference with ACC is that it can maintain a constant speed even on gradients by activating the brake system or executing downshifts. Adaptive cruise control relieves the driver of the task of adjusting the target speed to the dynamic traffic conditions. This has been achieved by taking a cruise control system and developing it into adaptive cruise control. If no vehicle is detected in front, the desired speed is set. If a vehicle is detected in front, the system attempts to keep the time difference (speed-dependent distance) with respect to this vehicle as constant as possible up to the set speed.

New audio sources Digital tuner for Europe In addition to the digital tuners for North America, a digital radio is now also available for Europe. This tuner supports audio content, but no image, video or data services.

With DAB, the various radio stations are grouped into ensembles. Each ensemble can contain several radio stations. Two lists can be called up from the Tuner main menu: the ensemble list that displays the contents of each ensemble separately or the station list that summarizes the radio stations in all ensembles.

Google Search Following successful connection of the smartphone to the PCM, Google Search is available in the navigation area under the “POI” menu item along with the familiar POI search.

Weather information Following successful connection of the smartphone to the PCM, the weather information is available in the INFO main menu. Depending on the scope of

“Online weather” menu item under INFO – OPTION.

New vehicle functions Traffic sign display The traffic sign display is also being extended in the PCM in combination with the optional camera system. Up to now, speed limits that were stored in the navigation database were displayed. Using the camera system, up to three traffic signs with additional sign can be displayed at once. In addition to the speed limits, restrictions on passing as well as lifting of the restrictions can also be displayed. The traffic signs detected by the camera and the information available in the database are compared to increase reliability.

The PCM serves as a data supplier for the information from the digital map. This is compared with the information derived from image recording in the camera control unit and displayed on the instrument cluster and the PCM.
