INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION
Tire Rotation To equalize w ear it is recom m ended th a t th e tires be ro tated every 6 ,000 miles. U pon ro tatio n , tire pressure m ust be adjusted (fro n t and rear) in accordance w ith the recom m enda tions for tire inflation pressure in the Load C apacity C hart on page 4.
Check control arm bushings and ball jo in ts for wear. L ubricate tie rods, u p p er and low er co n tro l arms, and ball jo in ts at fittings w ith w ater resistant EP chassis grease w hich m eets G eneral M otors Specification No. GM 6 0 3 1M every 6 ,000 miles. NOTE: Ball joints must be at + 1 0 °F . or more before lubricating.
STEERING STANDARD STEERING
REAR SUSPENSION
Check the steering gear to frame bolts regularly to be certain they are tight. Keep the pitm an arm to pitm an shaft n u t tight. Keep the housing side and end covers tight to prevent lubricant loss and prevent steering from loosening. Seasonal change o f this lubricant is unnecessary and the housing should n o t be drained. The steering gear is factory-filled w ith steering gear lubri cant. Seasonal change o f this lubricant should n o t be per form ed and the housing should n o t be drained—no lubrication is required for the life o f the steering gear. Every 36,000 miles, the gear should be inspected for seal leakage (actual solid g re a se -n o t ju st oily film ). If a seal is replaced or the gear is overhauled, the gear housing should be refilled w ith No. 1051052 (13 oz. container) Steering Gear L ubricant w hich m eets GM Specification GM 4673M , or its equivalent.
Keep spring to axle U bolts and shackle bolts properly tightened. Check U b o lt nuts after the first 1,000 miles o f operation if the U b o lt or U b o lt nuts are changed in service.
NOTE: D o not use EP Chasis Lube, which meets G M Specification G M 6 0 3 1 M , to lubricate the gear. DO N O T O V E R -F IL L the gear housing. NOTE:

TACHOMETER-MECHANICAL L ubricate drive cable w ith SAE 90 m ulti-purpose gear lube every 6 ,000 miles.
D o lubricate intermediate steering shaft
w ith water resistant EP chassis grease which meets General M otors Specification No. G M 60 31 M every 6 ,0 0 0 miles.
POWER STEERING Pow er steering assist is provided by a hydraulic pum p driven by the engine. When the engine is n o t running or if the pow er steering pum p drive belt breaks, the vehicle can still be steered, b u t m uch greater steering effo rt will be required. Service gear b ox in the same m anner as prescribed for the conventional or standard steering gears. In addition, for all m odels, check fluid in pow er steering pum p reservoir—while h o t and wheels in full left tu rn position—m ake additions using GM Power Steering Fluid or if n o t available use A utom atic Transm ission F luid—DEXRON or equivalent required to bring level to full m ark on filler cap dipstick.
SUSPENSION C A U T IO N :. Certain driving conditions such as dust storms and frequent driving on dusty roads neces sitate more frequent lubrication periods.
M aintain correct front end alignm ent to provide easy steer ing, longer tire life, and driving stability.
BODY LUBRICATION N orm al use o f truck causes m etal-to-m etal m ovem ent at certain points in the cab body. Noise, wear and im proper operation at these points will result when a protective film o f lubricant is n ot provided. For exposed surfaces, such as door checks, door lock bolts, lock striker plates, dovetail bum per wedges, etc., apply a thin film o f light engine oil. Where oil holes are provided in body parts a dripless oil can be safely used, b u t any lubricant should be used sparingly, and after application all excess should be carefully w iped off. The seat adjusters and seat track and sliding door track, ordinarily overlooked, should be lubricated w ith w ater resist ant EP chassis grease w hich m eets G eneral M otors Specifica tio n No. GM 6 0 3 1M. T here are other points on bodies w hich may occasionally require lubrication and w hich are difficult to service. Window regulators and controls are confined in th e space betw een the upholstery and the outside door panel. Easy access to the w orking parts m ay be m ade by removing the trim . D oor w eatherstrips and rubber h o o d bum pers should be lightly coated w ith a rubber lubricant.
