.TEMP" The temDeratufe gauge registers the tempeEture of the solution in the cooling svstem. If the needle of the gauge swings far itto the H (hot) zone, it rneans the engrne is r unni n g d a n g e ro u s l y h o t a n d may soon quit. Stop and 'nvestl gate. The usual cause of overtreat ing is that some of the water or antifreeze in the radiator has €vaporated or leaked out through a broken radiator or heater hose.

TGNITION AND STARTER The ignition and starting motor switch ar€ integral. This switch is located on the dash, below ard to the.ight of the instrument cluster.

Turn the key to the extreme right (clockwise) to connect the ignition and oank the eDsine.

LUBRICATINGYOUR JEEDVEHICLE Regular application of highsrade lubricants when operating your 'Jeep' vehicle is especially im portant because of the diversined tl.pe of service it perfo.ms. The amount of trouble free service you .eceive will be in proportion to the care eiven. because of the diversified service aDd conditions unde. which the vehicle may be operated.

Good judgment must be used for frequency of lubrication accord iog to the type and conditions of the work beins performed. As an example when used as a farm tractor unde. dusty conditions, the chassis should be lubdcated daily as the new lubricant fotces grit and dirt, which has accumulated dur ing the day, from the bearing su.faces. Under these conditions, the air creare. should also be cleaned and refilled daily or, under extreme conditions, twice daily.

Because of the importance of lubrication, detailed recommenda tions are given in the paragraphs followine.

VALVE TIMING

The valve timins may be checked in the following manner: Adjust the inlet valve lash of No. 1 cylinde. to .026' (.6604 mm.).

Then rotate the craDkshaft clockwise until the piston in No. 1 cylinder is ready for the intale stroke.

To dete.min€ this, estimate the 9o befo.e top center position on the timing gear cover. figure 8, by notins the distance between the top center ma.k and th€ 5' mark,

and aligD the notch oD the fan drive pulley with the 9o position.

With the crankshaft in this positioD, valve tiDidg is correct if No. I rocker arm is just tight against the end of the valve stem.

After checking, reset the valve lash to the cor.ect clearance.

The fuel system consists of the fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, carbureto! and ai. cleaner.

The most ioportant maintenance attention is to keep the system clean and free of water, also periodically inspect for leaks.

Should the vehicle be stored for an extended period, the fuel sys tem should be completely draired and the ensine started end allowed to run until the carburetor is emptied. This will avoid oxidation of the fue1, resulting in the fo.mation of gum in the units of the syst€m.

Gum fornation is similar to hard varnish and oay cause trouble iD the fuel pump valves or the carbu.etor ffoat valve may become stuck or the filter screen blocked.

Gum formation can be dissolved by acetone, obtainable iD most drug stores. ID extreme cases, it will be necessary to disassembl€ and cl€an the fuel system, however, often one pint of ac€tone placed in the fuel tank with about one gallon of gasoline will dissolve any deposits as it passes through the system with the gasoline.

FRONT WHEEL BEARINCS Thc front wheels are mounted on two opposed tapered roller bea', rngs.

Thes€ bearings are adjustabte for wear and their sarisfactory operation and long life depends upon periodic attentior and cor, rect lubrication. Loose frort wheel bearings may caus€ excessive wear and will afrect front wheel alignment. If the bearins adjustment is too tight, the rollers may break or become overh€ated.

To check the adjustment, fi.st raise the front ot the vehicle so that the tires clear the floor. Check the brakes to be sure they a.e free and fully released. With the hands, check sidewise shake of the wheel.

If the bearings are correctly adjNted, shake of the wheel will be

Should the test indicate that adjustment is necessary, remove the hub cap, axle shaft nut and washe., and driviDg flange. See Fig. 26- Wheel bearing adjust ment will then be accessible.Berd the lip of the nut locking washer so that the adjustire nut lock nut and washe. can be r€moved. Ro tate the wheel and tighten the ad justing nut until the wheel binds slightly. Then back off the nut % tufn, o. more if nec€ssary, makins sure the wheel turns freely without sidewise shake. Replace the locking washer and lock nut and bend over the locking washer lip. Check the adjustment and reassemble the driving Aange, nut and hub cap.

Th€ bumper weight, fisure 37, is beld in place by fclr bolts and is provided with hand holes for lifting. Do not add sa'd bags or other weiehts iD the vehicle. When drivins-over rough terrain, with the bumper weisht in Place, the driver should exercise care.

GOVERNOR AD TUSTMENT Tune the enginc to obtain smooth operatioD. Check the car, buretor throttle to make certain that it op€ls aod closes fully. Disconnect the accelerator spring to eliminate any bindi.s or stitrness in the carburetor cont.ol linkage.

F.ee operation of the throttle con tlol linkage is essential to avoid sursins of the sovernor in operation. After checking, reconnect thc acc€lerator spring.

Start tie engire and allow it to run until operatiDg tempcrature is reached. Adjust the throttle idle adjusting screw to prowide an idle speed of 600 to 650 .pm. Then stop the engine.

Pull the governor control hardle on the dash out to the last notch.

Place the carburetor thottle in wide open position. Adjust the link between the governor and the bell

crank on the side of the engine so that the linkage will hold the carburetor thiottle in the wide open positioD. Push the cont.ol handle all the way in and st3rt the engine. Again pull the control handle out to thc last notch and adjust the length of the control cable so that the engine will run at 2600 rpm. Push the control handle in and recheck the linkage to be sure that it is frec and that the engioe will returD to an idle sp€ed of 600 to 650 rpm.

In the abs€nce of electrical tachometer equipment, engine speed msy be determincd by th€ speedometer. When driving with the front wheel d.ive disengased and the rear wheels in high or direct drive, the speedt.ansoission ometer will read 40 mph at an €neine speed of approximately 2600

For continuous asricultural work, the maximum draw bar pull should be limited to 1200 pounds (544 kg.). The 'J€ep' Universal is caPable of much hishe. draw bar pulls than the 1200 pounds (5'+4 kg.) aP' proved for continuous service, which may be used for starting loads or towing loads fo. short periods on good ground in which case a draw bar pull as hish as 1800 pounds (8r7 kg.) may be safely used.
